Destiny – Bungie Has Ambitious Plans For Character Creation

MMO fans will have a high number of customization options to look forward to when creating and tweaking their avatar in Bungie’s upcoming shared-world shooter, Destiny.

The studio hope to offer an “ambitious number of skins, armor, weapons and other items for players to work with,” writes Polygon in their GDC report.

Bungie technical art lead Scott Shepherd explained in a GDC talk earlier that characters’ bodies are sectioned off into four slots; head, chest, arms, and legs. Each is customizable with the vast number of items attainable in the game. Armor pieces will function differently from one another and will be vital to gameplay progressions while remaining visually pleasing, says Shepherd.

Each class – the Hunter, Warlock, and Titan – will offer uniquely different aesthetics and will be instantly recognizable on the battlefield. Hunters will be recognized through their use of torn capes, hazmat suits, and gas masks. Warlocks will favor cloaks robes and that hide hardware underneath. Titans will sport heavy armor inspired by medieval knights.

Shepherd mentioned the importance of keeping items accessible throughout the decade of Destiny content Bungie plans to offer, meaning that pieces will be usable over and over within multiple armor sets.

Several color palettes have been developed for each of the three classes, while items will change in shape and color the more advanced they become. Bungie also hopes to include an extensive decal system that will allow users to accent colors as well as alter an item’s shininess and gradient.

“We’ve seen the system get better and better the more content we add to it,” Shepherd said. “This bodes well for a franchise we want to expand on for years and years.”

We recently learned that Bungie will be using Faceware technology to create highly detailed characters in Destiny.

Destiny launches on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 September 9. Expect details soon on the upcoming Summer beta.

Battlefield 4 PC Security Exploit Kicks Targeted Players From Servers, Crashes Game

Reports are coming in that a recently surfaced security exploit is griefing Battlefield 4 PC users on Commander-enabled servers.

Any PC-side server with Commander slots enabled is susceptible, Battlefield 4 YouTube personality Xfactor Gaming tells us. At the will of any exploiter with the know how, he or she may target any player, causing this message to flash on-screen for roughly five seconds: “No free Commander slots.” Shortly thereafter, all players are kicked from the server and the server crashes.

You can catch the exploit in action below:

Watch live video from rivaLxfactor on TwitchTV

As you can see, it also appears that a bout of severe lag or “rubber-banding” shortly precedes the message and the crash.

Xfactor tells us that fellow streamers Tommyrage and Bongeh have experienced and captured similar occurrences during live streams, where exploiters are able to track down what server a broadcaster is currently playing on and target that individual. According to him, some of attacks followed shortly after messages from an unnamed individual claiming responsibility, indicated that the attacks are indeed targeted.

While it may not affect all users, and only those with a following on popular streaming services like Twitch, it might not hurt to avoid Commander-enabled servers on the PC until developer DICE is able to determine a fix.

We’ve reached out to DICE for comment. Keep your sights on MP1st for updates!

PvZ: Garden Warfare Getting a New Xbox One Patch Tonight, Xbox 360 Patch To Follow Later

Update

A few updates from Weibe’s Twitter:

“Xbox 360 is at 80% Need to keep Main Street and Driftwood Shores G&G maps out of rotation for a bit longer. Still working hard to resolve.”

“After a stressful few days of debugging and testing were happy to announce that the Xbox One issues have been resolved!”

Original Story

As we previously reported, numerous Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare users on both the Xbox One and the Xbox 360 have been experiencing a few difficulties since downloading the recently launched Garden Variety DLC Pack.

According to reports, the latest update froze consoles and reverted the game back to its previous pre economy and balance patch state.

PopCapHD has been looking into the matter, and it looks like the issues will be getting patched tonight, at least on the Xbox One, according to Garden Warfare’s creative director, Justin Wiebe.

Wiebe also mentioned, however, that Xbox 360 users will have to wait a bit longer to see these fixes go live and will have to go a bit longer without having either the Driftwood Shores and Main Street Gardens and Graveyards maps in the rotation until the patch is implemented.

Has this recent bug stopped you from playing Garden Warfare?

DICE Details All Four Battlefield 4 Naval Strike Maps, New Images

With the Naval Strike ocean combat-themed expansion, developer DICE aims “to expand on what players loved with the naval warfare from Battlefield 4.”

The studio recently took a moment to formally introduce all four of the new maps launching with Naval Strike; Lost Islands, Nansha Strike, Wave Breaker, and Operation Mortar.

“It’s our hope you’ll enjoy the new maps immensely, whether you’re trying out the new Carrier Assault mode or piloting the new Hovercraft,” says DICE.

Lost Islands

BF4

“Starting with Lost Islands, this map focuses around a crashed airplane located near the center of the map. The map itself contains several small islands surrounding the crash site that can be traversed using quad bikes around the whole map, or by using boats (including the new hovercraft) to take shortcuts across it. The key to master this map is to control the plane at the crash site, which can be blown open to give infantry some much needed cover. Another special area of this map is the cave blanketed by a waterfall, as it provides visual cover for patrolling boats and helicopters.”

Nansha Strike

BF4

“Nansha Strike is a very boat heavy map with several bases spread out in the water to battle it out on, while at the same time allowing total infantry control of the middle areas. The central area provides a lot of cover for infantry and is a death trap for water vehicles if they try to enter it via the small rivers. The surrounding bases can be captured from the water, with some offering big bases in the middle of the sea for infantry. This is where the more powerful vehicles spawn, which makes them key to own and control.”

Wave Breaker

BF4

“Wave Breaker has a unique submarine base hidden in the middle mountain which allows for tight close quarter combat, but it also has wide canals where it’s possible to do drive-bys with the attack boats to add extra mayhem to the mix. The middle area has many different Levolution possibilities. You can for instance bring down a submarine from its support and turn off the lights in the surrounding corridors. It’s also possible to stop boats from entering the area by closing the four flood gates and blocking the direct path from the bases on the two sides. The middle island will give players intense fights in Deathmatch modes.”

Operation Mortar

BF4

“Operation Mortar is our vacation paradise turned into a war zone, with wooden huts surrounding the islands. There is an old fort on the top of the mountain, which provides a great overview over the whole map. It also gives the team owning it a fast way to capture the other bases on the main island. In Rush, this levels starts from the bottom of the islands and goes up towards the fort, providing interesting and fun vertical gameplay which will provide a big challenge for attackers.”

If you’re anxious to see all four maps in action, you’ll find tons of high-quality footage through this link.

Battlefield 4 Naval Strike drops March 25 for Premium subscribers and April 8 for non-Premium subscribers.

Are Triple-A Developers at the Final Checkpoint?

There’s a wave of change sweeping the gaming landscape.

Indie developers are quickly becoming the titans of the industry because they are giving gamers something more than sequels. While it might not mean triple-A developers are done for, the communities behind their games are gaining more control than ever before over the kinds of games they create.

The beginning of the end?

In 2005, writer Clay Shirky gave a lecture as part of a series of TED talks. In his lecture, he talked about how the internet is reshaping the world from a place where institutions provide solutions for everyday needs and problems, to the masses providing their own solutions. It used to be that if you wanted something or needed something done, you had to find a company that provided the services or solution to your problems and/or needs. Now, we have Etsy, Wikipedia, endless forum posts on anything and everything, social media, and a host of other known and unknown outlets providing solutions to everyday issues that only going to a library or college could solve just under a decade ago. This paradigm shift has affected the gaming industry as well.

DayZ is the result of people making new solutions (mods) to solve existing problems (lack of something in a game). Indie games are often a collaborative effort between large and small groups of people that never actually meet in person contributing various bits and pieces to the project. Some indie games, like Minecraft and Hotline Miami have exploded because they offer something no triple-A developer could ever hope to accomplish, something original that isn’t familiar or friendly to first time players. Valve is one of the few companies that realizes how valuable crowd-sourcing is. Their Early Access program is Valve recognizing that indie games are exploding right now and their developers need a safer environment to create their games to maintain a sustainable flow of content. It provides upfront funding, taking pressure off the developers and allowing them to be a little more ambitious with their games, and it’s working.

If you look at the most purchased games on Steam since DayZ’s alpha release, you’ll noticed that Rust and DayZ have dominated the top two spots, not even being bested during the Steam winter sale where triple-A games like Batman: Arkham Origins and Assassin’s Creed 4 were discounted up to 50%.

f9c5d6fc7d4a61ac23ae8de563051a2b

More importantly though is the fact that both DayZ and Rust are unfinished games being sold with disclaimers saying as much.

What this shows is that gamers, at least on PC, are tired of triple-A games being released with massive bugs, missing content, bloated DLC, microtransactions, or just a general lack of value. Gamers in general are getting tired of the same annual releases from developers like Ubisoft and Activision. The problem for triple-A developers is that the pace they need to produce games at to compete with the likes of Payday 2, DOTA 2, DayZ, Rust, Insurgency, Chivalry, or Starbound, is too fast for them to do anything other than recycle the same content every year and hope to buy up a new IP every few months. Ubisoft has employed over 1,000 people to make Assassin’s Creed an annual title ever since AC2 was released. There is no way for 1,000 people to communicate effectively when they’re grinding tooth and nail just to meet a deadline, and it shows. AC3 was an utter mess of a game with half-baked mechanics and poorly written storylines and AC4, while a big improvement, is obviously just a refinement of what people liked about AC3 with less of what they didn’t.

But imagine if Ubisoft had put out a beta for AC4. Maybe published some authoring tools so that people could contribute their ideas in the form of realized content. Perhaps there would have been more than a handful of recycled enemy types. Maybe then the story would have been more cohesive and nonsensical. And maybe the PC port wouldn’t have been an unoptimized mess. You can’t help but think of these things and then look at what Bethesda did with Skyrim in releasing mod tools and supporting the communities utilizing them. How many hundreds upon hundreds of hours of playable content and thousands of unique items are now available thanks to Skyrim being open to modding? How much value do all those mods add? In short A LOT. In fact, it stands to reason that part of why Skyrim was so immensely successful was because, every day, new free playable content is pouring out of the community behind it.

IRMx8pX

It’s obvious that the big institutional staples of the gaming industry like EA, Activision, Ubisoft, and even Nintendo are struggling to keep up with the Notches and Dean Halls of the world and that they’re throwing money and people at their problems faster than they can make and hire them. Eventually, triple-A developers are going to have to adapt to provide their employees the freedom and resources to make games like Star Citizen and The Banner Saga. The biggest hurdle for them, is of course, risk. When you spend over $200M on a game like the Elder Scrolls: Online, you can’t afford to have it fail and relying on the next Minecraft to be something one company can come up with every year is a serious gamble.

What happens if they fail?

Triple-A developers disappearing isn’t all sunshine and rainbows though. Star Citizen and Kingdom Come: Deliverance both rely on CryEngine 3, a technology developed by Crytek, the bigwigs behind Crysis and Ryse. If developers like Crytek disappear, who’s going to make the cutting edge technology a lot of indie developers build their games with? It stands to reason that DayZ wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the ARMA II engine and it’s mod support. Minecraft runs on Java. Insurgency and Titanfall are both powered by Source, though I don’t think you’ll catch anyone calling Titanfall “indie.” If the companies that can afford to spend millions of dollars developing Frostbite 3 and Ignite stop existing, what will happen to game development in general?

It goes without saying that while the Falskaar mod for Skyrim, which added over 20 hours of gameplay content and a whole new world to Skyrim is amazing, the lack of professional voice actors, a big team of engineers, artists, and writers, shows. While I’d be willing to drop $10 or $15 on Skyrim DLC, Falskaar would be hard pressed to get much more than $5 out of me without getting that extra layer of polish that comes with the kinds of resources Bethesda has to dedicate to DLC development. While it might mean that the average price of games would go down considerably if triple-A developers disappeared, it would also mean that overall quality of games would become much less predictable. That’s not to say that Battlefield 4 or AC4 are perfect, but it’s also very rare to see indie games reach the same level of scale and quality that they offer. More often than not we see indie developers making ugly or outdated-looking games that play really well (Binding of Isaac, 7 Ways to Die), or games that look fantastic and almost cutting edge (Nether, Dear Ester) that either don’t play that well or offer much in the way of actual gameplay. Indie games that deliver in both areas, like Shadow Warrior or STALKER are normally too niche to appeal to enough consumers to be profitable in the same way that games like Bioshock or The Last of Us are, which makes indie developers wary of pushing themselves as the risk of little or no reward is very high and the cost of making ambitious games can be fairly severe.

The Crossroads

Personally, I think there’s always going to be room for bigger fish in the sea provided the old ones go extinct. Eventually, even bigger companies and developers are going to replace the Respawns and Naughty Dogs of today. Whether or not they’re “indie” companies remains to be seen, but either way, gamers can expect plenty of new stuff to play for years to come. Personally, I’m really excited to see games like Star Citizen being built on triple-A technology and funded by gamers through things like Kickstarter and Early Access. It gives us more input on the way games are made and more control to dictate what the industry does next than ever before.

What are your thoughts? Do you think triple-A developers like DICE and Respawn will be able to keep going as they have? Are you excited to see what happens if indie developers replace triple-A companies as the kings of game development? Let us know in the comments!

BOSS JEDIZOHAN

I've been a gamer since before most gamers were born. Now a full-fledged member of the PC Master Race, I'm enjoying all the best games from both AAA and Indie developers in glorious 1440p. Praise Gaben and may the Steam deals be ever syphoning funds from your life savings. Subscriber

New Killer Instinct Devs To Be Revealed After Fulgore’s Release, Lobbies To Include 8 Players

This week’s Killer Instinct Play XBLA stream is filled with interesting tidbits of info on the game’s future.

According to the stream, Killer Instinct’s new developers will be revealed some time after the new character Fulgore is released to the public. However, as we reported earlier, Microsoft’s creative director Adam Isgreen stated that the new character, alongside the rest of the promised March update such as story mode and online lobbies, might be delayed to ensure that it releases without any issues.

Unfortunately, a solid release date as to when the aforementioned additions will launch was not mentioned.

Speaking of online lobbies, this week’s stream also revealed that when the long-awaited online lobbies update does go live, you can expect eight player rooms and that you’ll be able to spectate those matches. The update will mark the end of Season One, but there’s still the possibility for the team to add a few more things afterwards.

Additionally, it appears that the “retro” costume for Thunder that was accidentally outed via a glitch over the weekend will be released very soon, according to the developers.

Which developer would you like to see tackle Killer Instinct’s future? Let us know in the comment section below!

Xbox One, PCs, Tablets, and Smartphones Will Benefit From Microsoft’s DirectX 12 API

Today, Microsoft unveiled the company’s first work on its new DirectX 12 API.

According to Microsoft, PCs, tablets, smartphones, and Xbox One will all benefit from the new technology that aims free up CPU resources, allowing developers low-level access and greater control over GPU hardware.

“Traditionally this level of efficiency was only available on console – now, Direct3D 12, even in an alpha state, brings this efficiency to PC and Phone as well,” writes Microsoft in a recent developer blog entry.

Earlier today, the company demonstrated this console-level efficiency in a PC demo of Turn 10’s Forza Motorsport 5, which the studio says took four man-months to achieve.

Porting across 3DMark’s benchmarking tool to DX12, Microsoft says it was able to reduce CPU burden by 50%. On the Xbox One, the improvements in memory management should give it a 20% boost per frame thanks to 20% more Gflops being available for use.

Microsoft’s Anuj Gosalia told The Verge that though DX12 won’t necessarily help the console achieve stunning 1080p visuals with the latest games or offer any particular new graphical effects, it will let developers “exploit a little bit more of what the hardware can do.”

However, Xbox director of development Boyd Multere said earlier that he “fully expects” developers to achieve native 1080p games on the Xbox One as time passes.

Microsoft projects that the new API will be supported in all major games by the end of 2015.

Thanks, DigitalFoundry and WCCFTech.

Call of Duty 2014 Will Be The “Most Ambitious” and “Most Creative”, Says Sledgehammer

Sledgehammer Games co-founder Glen Schofield says this year’s Call of Duty will be the “most ambitious” and “most creative” the studio has ever made.

Speaking at this year’s GDC alongside studio cofounder Michael Condrey, Schofield talked about the development process behind this year’s unannounced Call of Duty project, rumored to be another entry in the Modern Warfare series, calling it the “most ambitious, most creative game we’ve ever made.”

During the presentation, the studio also offered a quick glimpse of one of the game’s characters, though the showing was so brief, no images were captured.

Activision recently announced Sledgehammer Games as the publisher’s third studio dedicated to the development of yearly Call of Duty games alongside Infinity Ward and Treyarch.

Keep your eyes and ears open early May, which is typically the month that Activision officially announces the next Call of Duty title, as was the case with Call of Duty: Ghosts last year.

Destiny to Use Faceware Tech For Increased Character Detail

Bungie will be making use of Faceware’s markerless motion capture technology to provide lifelike character detail and movement in their upcoming shared-world shooter, Destiny.

The technology, previously used on Bungie’s Halo: Reach, “uses video to capture every detail of an actor’s face, and computer vision software to transfer that performance quickly to digital characters, giving Bungie’s artists a detailed first pass to which they can then add greater detail to their characters,” reads a recent press release.

“The ease in which Faceware translates real performances into digital performances is on of the main reasons Bungie decided to use the technology on Destiny.”

Members of the studio will be diving into greater details during their GDC talk tomorrow.

Bungie hopes players will commit to unique character builds in Destiny, launching September 9 on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3.

Titanfall to Support 4K on PC and Incorporate Nvidia GameWorks Tech

Respawn Entertainment’s recently launched shooter, Titanfall, is going to be getting a bit of a visual and technical boost on the PC with the help of Nvidia.

As explained in a recent Nvidia blog post by developer content and technology manager Ashu Rege, Titanfall will soon support 4K resolution along with multiple Nvidia graphics processing units (GPU).

“Respawn will also release updates to support high-definition 4K displays,” Rege wrote, “and our SLI multi-GPU technology, for a fantastic high-end PC experience.”

Nvidia’s GameWorks technologies will offer a number of benefits including PhysX for realistic clothing and destruction effects, VisualFX for proper hair, fire, and liquid simulation, Temporal anti-aliasing (TXAA) to reduce screen tearing, and Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion+ (HBAO+) for “more lifelike shadows.”

According to Respawn, it’s likely that Titanfall’s Xbox One version will also see a performance boost in an upcoming patch.

Yesterday, it was reported that EA has already secured rights for Titanfall 2.

Killer Instinct – Fulgore, Story Mode, and Online Lobbies Could Be Delayed

Bad news for Killer Instinct fans. The much awaited March update that was set to add story mode, online lobbies, and the final character for season one of Killer Instinct, Fulgore, might see a delay.

The announcement comes from Microsoft’s creative director, Adam Isgreen, who took to NeoGAF to deliver that bad news:

“We are still aiming for March for the big Fulgore/Story/Lobby release. Yes, that’s risky, because the update is chock full of content and we’re 13 days from April. I can only say we’re trying to land it. If we’re delayed out of March, it’s only because we’re being extra-careful to find and address any issues with this major content update.”

Additionally,  it appears that the trailer for Fulgore will be releasing soon, as Igreen stated that it’s coming together nicely and needs a few more tweaks.

Xbox One – MS Expects 1080p Games To Happen, Will Soon Reward Players With ‘Good Social Behavior’

Microsoft fully expects developers to achieve native 1080p games on the Xbox One as time passes.

“I fully expect that to happen,” Xbox director of development Boyd Multere recently told OXM.

“The [graphics processing units] are really complicated beasts this time around.” But Multere expects things to go smoother once developers begin to really wrap their head around the Xbox One’s ESRAM that works in tandem with the console’s 8 GB of DDR3 RAM.

“Once these engines – the engine developers like Frostbite and those guys – they really wrap their heads around this particular GPU architecture, then all of the titles coming out of that studio will take advantage of it and get better,” he said. “The hardware is basically baked, and what comes next is people discovering better software techniques to take advantage of it, especially in the ordering of the data so it flows through all the caches correctly, and I think there’s a lot of opportunity there.”

Multere also expects “fairly large improvements in GPU output as people really tune these data sets now to get maximum use out of their GPUs,” he explained. But he agrees that “Part of it is learning how to tune, part of it is I think a very legitimate question of quality of pixels versus number of pixels, and of course both are interesting.”

It was noted earlier that Respawn Entertainment’s recently launched shooter, Titanfall, will likely receive a future resolution update targeting 900p or 1080p.

In related news, Microsoft is also putting effort into new ways to reward gamers that exhibit positive behavior in the Xbox Live environment. Rather than penalizations negative actions, Microsoft partner and development lead Frank Savage explained in a recent GDC talk that features in a future Xbox One update will “actively encourage [players] to be better.”

If your reputation is “soaring because you’re this amazing player that everyone wants to be with,” Savage wants Xbox Live’s reputation algorithm to recognize that and reward individuals for that reputation.

Savage told Polygon that these rewards have yet to be specified, as that component of Xbox Live’s reputation system is still in the “brainstorming” stages.
