Turtle Rock on Evolve’s Online-Only Nature, “Catering” to Offline Modes as Well

Turtle Rock founder and design director Chris Ashton talks about the studio’s upcoming next-gen co-op/competitive shooter Evolve and what they’ve learned from previous work on titles like Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2.

When asked about his thoughts on online-only titles like Titanfall, Ashton told VG247 that Turtle Rock has “got a couple of different ways to play the game with more or less narrative woven into it.” He touched specifically on Evolve’s story and how it’s woven into character dialogue.

“What we’ve shown people so far was ‘let’s just play rounds on this one map,’ but at the end of the day there’s a reason why you’re there and an objective the monster’s trying to destroy,” he said. “The characters will banter about that objective while they’re in the world, so you’ll learn some fiction through them, and that’s very much the way our Left 4 Dead story was told. You get to hear them talk about the world while they’re in it.”

He also hinted at some other experiences that the studio is still keeping under wraps.

“That stuff’s there to tell it through the characters, and there’s some little-longer experiences that we haven’t really talked much about yet, where we have the opportunity to do a little bit more. Hopefully we’ll be able to dive in soon, but at a minimum no matter what more – if you’re just playing a skirmish or Hunt all day on different maps – you’re going to still learn about the characters, the setting, why you’re there, why the monsters are trying to destroy objectives. That sort of thing.”

Turtle Rock hopes to cater to those who enjoy offline experiences as well, however. Ashton explained that players will have the chance to try out newly unlocked characters in a more private setting before heading off into Evolve’s asymmetrical multiplayer experience.

“For us there’s so many different characters, monsters and strategies that one thing we wanted to do was to make sure that – say you unlock a new character – maybe you’re totally fine and confident and you’re going to just jump into multiplayer and try them for the first time, but suppose you want to learn about them and practice a little bit before you dive into the online space. That’s one thing where an offline or single-player component becomes important to us,” he said.

“I do the same thing personally with stuff. StarCraft is a good example where I’m going to play skirmishes against the AI so I can figure the tech trees out, learn some basic strategies and do that stuff before I go online. Maybe that’s just me, I don’t know if a lot of people do that or not, but it seems like a process that makes sense so we’re catering to that.”

As for online matches, Ashton ensured that, while it’s still a bit early, the team is working on keeping things as smooth as possible by including AI in public matchmaking when players leave.

It’s still a little bit early. We’re still working that stuff out, but right now for sure AI will take over, and then depending on how you match-made into the game or what kind of mode it is, we’ll be able to match other people back into your game, he explained. “In some modes you’ll have control of that. If you’re playing friends-only then obviously it’s up to you to invite someone else, so we’re investigating a lot of options.”

“Having the AI be able to take over offers us some flexibility,” he continued. “If you’re playing against a monster player, suppose his internet connection goes down or he yanks the cable out of the wall or something, we want to give him the opportunity to get his machine back online and get back into the game. So the AI will continue to play and do the best it can in your stead, and we want to hold that slot for a certain amount of time for that guy to come back.

In the end, Evolve sounds like an eclectic mix of PvE, PvP, single player, and multiplayer experiences all wrapped up into one shooter.

Earlier, executive producer Denby Grace also detailed some of the lessons in character development the studio learned earlier projects.

Evolve, built on CryEngine, is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC in Q3 of 2014.

Blizzard Developing Diablo 3 For ‘Xbox One and PS4 Simultaneously’

Microsoft has yet to officially announced Diablo 3‘s arrival on the Xbox One, but it is in development, says Blizzard.

Speaking to VideoGamer, lead producer Alex Mayberry said that the Ultimate Evil Edition of Diablo 3 is in development on the Xbox One, along with the previously announced PlayStation 4 version.

“I don’t know where we are with Microsoft right now so I can’t really comment on what that contract looks like,” Mayberry explained. “The point is we are developing for Xbox [One] and PS4 simultaneously. We hit those major platforms and then our goal as a development team is to make them run.”

According to Mayberry, “it makes more sense” to develop for both next-gen consoles simultaneously, even without assurance that it will appear on Microsoft’s platform.

“We have that pipeline worked out,” he continued. “We’ve already done it with the 360 and PS3, so that team knows how to develop at the same time for both of those platforms. That’s just what we do. And then Blizzard and Microsoft can work out whatever they work out.”

Mayberry added that the launch of Diablo 3’s Ultimate Evil Edition is “not far off… [The console team] work in parallel development with us so they’re not far behind.”

Blizzard is currently gearing up for the launch of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls expansion set on the Mac and PC tomorrow, March 25.

Assassin’s Creed 4 Multiplayer Maps Are Free Because of Microtransactions, Says Ubisoft

When we think about microtransactions, we often think about being nickled and dimed for content that should be in a game from the get go. However, Ubisoft game director on Assassin Creed IV: Black Flag’s multiplayer has a different point of view.

During Ubisoft’s GDC conference, Damien Kieken explained how involving microtransactions in ACIV’s multiplayer has allowed the studio to deliver additional multiplayer maps for free.

“Just quick notes here for example in our case,” he said. “We are offering all of our maps… so all of the AC maps are free in AC4. The main reason is we don’t want to split the community. We don’t want to have players saying, ‘I have the DLC, so I’m only playing with the guys who have the DLC, my buddy doesn’t have the DLC, so he can’t play with me.’ It doesn’t make any sense.”

Kieken believes that money is better spent elsewhere in order to keep the AC community playing the same content together.

“For us, because we want all of them to enjoy the game together, to keep playing together, to be happy together, and to spend money on the costume and other things.”

Ubisoft detailed that they saw an increase in revenue due to offering free maps alongside microtransactions, surprisingly. Though many devs are opting to introduce microtransaction into their games today, it appears that Ubisoft is among the few to give other content, like maps, for free because of it.

What do you think? Is this a sound approach to microstransactions and free DLC?

Assassin’s Creed Unity was recently announced alongside an in-game teaser video. No multiplayer details have surfaced, but we do know it’s coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

The Division To Deliver ‘Unexpected New Features and Unique Innovation’ With Snowdrop

If last week’s jaw-dropping technical demonstration of the powerful Snowdrop engine is anything to go by, Massive Entertainment’s The Division is going to be a beautiful game to look at.

While the graphics engine built internally within the studio will certainly afford Massive the flexibility and agility they require for a gigantic, open-world, third-person shooter like The Division, they hope to go “better”, not “bigger” with their upcoming project.

“Snowdrop was created in-house, at Massive, in response to a specific requirement: to do things better, not bigger,” brand art director Rodrigo Cortes says. “Triple-A game development projects are growing in scope exponentially, so we wanted to be smart and not rely on brute force. We needed an engine that would support how we work in the studio, promote creativity, and allow the freedom to experiment and prototype.”

Cortes says that the biggest takeaway from the new engine is the ability to allow Massive’s art team to realize their true ambitions and deliver “unexpected new features and unique innovations,” along with “amazing graphics”.

“Thanks to the power of our technology, we have empowered our artists and thus can reach levels of quality never before seen in videogames,” he says. “With the usability of the tools, people really excel in what they create. This has resulted in amazing graphics, as well as unexpected new features and unique innovations that really push the engine, the power of the consoles, and the games we work on, forward.”

We can’t wait to see what Massive has in store. Keep your sights on MP1st for more updates on The Divison, coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Single Player Games That Might Benefit From Multiplayer – inFamous

I’m not one to welcome too many alterations to my favorite single player titles. But while many single-player-games-turn-multiplayer have ended up as absolute garbage, I have been surprised by a few that have made the transition exceptionally well. I think Sucker Punch’s inFamous series could be one of them.

Why it Might Make Sense

While my opinion on inFamous: Second Son’s single player is that it’s absolutely fun, I can’t help but feel that it might be one of the few titles that may benefit from a multiplayer component. Why is that? Well, for starters, the universe that the game takes place in contains a mass amount of conduits (people with super powers), and yet despite learning of a large amount of them, we only see a handful of them in the game. Sucker Punch even went as far as starting an online campaign that would determine what kind of conduit power you would have if you were one of them. Several were discussed in the campaign, but of course, almost none of them actually made it in. It also goes without saying that there are several hundreds, if not thousands of conduits existing, yet, once again, we only see a glimpse of them.

infamous_second_son___up_power_by_legan666-d6awg52

How Would It Play Out?

The MMO

I think many are leaning towards this idea that if inFamous multiplayer did exist, it would most likely play out like a MMO. There would, of course, be three factions; Good, Evil, and the Military/DUP. The Good and The Evil factions would have the exact same powers that can be obtained, but completely different skill sets to make them different, whereas the military/DUP faction would be able to use tanks, helicopters and also be infused with conduit powers. The task of each faction would basically be to fight for control of the city, whereas the DUP/Military Faction would defend their own turf, which is heavily reinforced with all types of weapons.

Of course players would be able to participate in mission-based modes, similar to the ones in the single player campaign, to help earn karma and skill points. The game would be filled with many different types of missions, so it wouldn’t always be a player vs. player type of situation. And yes, there would be boss fights.

Also character customization would be key here. I guess you can think of it like City of Heroes, or DC Univers Online, but with the same gameplay as the single player, so it doesn’t feel like a typical RPG MMO.

Infamous-Second-Son-2

The Third-Person Shooter

This is actually the one I am leaning towards, just because a successful MMO would be difficult accomplishment, in my opinion, and would be hard to make feel right and enjoyable. A TPS inFamous game would be similar to The Last of Us multiplayer where you select which faction you want to be a part of. But unlike The Last of Us, these factions also have their own set of powers/abilities. The maps would be made to accommodate both open and close-quarter combat, and it would function with a limited amount of spawns. Loadouts would make up a character’s powers or moves, each ability costing certain amount of loadout points to help balance out any “over powered” moves. Think of it like Uncharted’s multiplayer with The Last of Us’ load-out/faction system and with powers. Finishing moves would be possible, but only after completing a certain objective and meeting other requirements in the match.

uncharted-2_infamous

I think if there is one thing that Batman: Origin’s multiplayer did right was that it introduced the ability to become a super villain mid-match, if you were on one of the villain factions. inFamous multiplayer could use a similar idea, in a sense that one player gains an exclusive power for that life once it becemes available.

Game modes would vary from Team Deathmatch to Domination, but some unique ones thrown into the mix it doesn’t feel like a carbon copy of other third-person multiplayer titles. As to what modes exactly, I can’t really think of any at the moment. Thoughts?

inFAMOUS_Second_Son-neon_blast-642_1385386743

Just Plain Old Co-op

I don’t see anything wrong with having a co-op mode in the game, though it would need to be different enough and have its own side story. inFamous has always had missions with another conduit, so perhaps a second player would be able to take control of the other conduit during mission plays. It wouldn’t be a huge game changer, but at least it would be something that would probably work out easily.

Why It Would Be A Bad Idea

It’s really just about the execution. We have been burned by many single-player-turned-multiplayer-games in their sequel or more modern iteration. Things should never be tacked on for the sake of trying to get into the multiplayer scene or just for DLC and paid content sake. Sucker Punch may have no experience with multiplayer, but neither did the devs of Uncharted and Last of Us, and look where that got them.

So, what do you guys think, is inFamous a title that could benefit from some kind of multiplayer component? What type of multiplayer would interest you the most?

According to a Respawn representative on the official forums, the update strictly focused on balance and bug fixes while an upcoming client-side patch will deal with most of the game’s performance issues.

Still, Titanfall fans await the addition of , custom loadout names, matchmaking upgrades, private matches party improvements on the Xbox One, and an FPS unlocker on the PC.

Unlike the recent server update, the client patch will likely require a download in order for the performance updates to take effect. Keep your sights on MP1st for more details.

Insurgency’s “Molotov Spring” Update Introduces Free Maps, New Game Modes, and More

Later this week, developer New World Interactive hopes to update their tactical, first-person, modern combat shooter, Insurgency, with new content and improvements.

While crashing and optimization fixes are a top priority at NWI, it doesn’t hurt that this week’s update launches with a healthy dose of free content.

Insurgency’s “Molotov Spring” update will introduce two new maps, new game modes, and updates to the game’s co-operative game modes.

Buhriz, the first of two new maps to be unveiled in a recent Steam blog update, is a larger-scale combat zone based around a small village with deadly rooftop vantage points. Check it out in action on an updated version of Insurgency’s Strike game mode:

[youtube id=”MMHcPMng1aU”]

Here’s another Buhriz gameplay video showing off some co-op action:

[youtube id=”f4pMaQ_AjFg”]

Speaking of co-op, the Molotov Spring update aims to improve Insurgency’s AI enemies and level design configurations in order to “prolong the action and create more challenging cooperative play,” says the studio. Expect bots to throw smoke grenades, frags, molotov cocktails, and even wield RPG launchers. Here’s another video showing off some of the updates to co-op:

PSA: Resistance – Last Chance To Fight With The Resistance Before Servers Shutdown Forever

We are approaching the final days, as Sony is set to close down servers for all the Resistance titles later this week.

Beginning March 28th, all online activity for Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, and Resistance 3 will cease to exist as their servers will be closed. For many, this is sad news, as the original Resistance was a superb launch title for the PS3 that supplied endless amount of multiplayer action. Last January, Sony closed off a series of Socom servers, along with the only-online title, MAG.

It’ll be interesting to see how many players will be online playing Resistance games this week, hoping to get in on one last battle against the Chimera threat.

Are you going to be revisiting any of the Resistance titles this week?

PvZ: Garden Warfare – Gardens And Graveyards To Be Tuned In Upcoming Patch

Two weeks ago, Plants vs. Zombies was updated to increase the the coin payout at the end of every round.

Player are reporting, however, that it has lead to an unbalance in payout between Plants and Zombies in the Gardens and Graveyards game mode, where Zombies are typically rewarded double the amount of coins. As a result, players would rush to switch to the Zombies squad, making it an overall poor experience for the Plants.

Thankfully, according to Garden Warfare’s creative director Justin Wiebe on Twitter, PopCap HD has been working on some new tuning updates for Gardens And Graveyards and hopes to have it out by the next patch.

No time frame was given, however.

Recently, PopCap HD has been hard at work resolving issues caused by the Garden Variety DLC that would freeze both the Xbox One and Xbox 360. Luckily, it appears the bugs have been successfully resolved and both consoles are to receive a fix soon.

Dark Souls 2 Review – A World of Beauty and Death, Allies and Enemies

You thought death was the worst possible fate? Think again.

Like previous installments, Dark Souls 2 focuses on a centralized world that has little to no narration. It’s shrouded in a mist of shadow, leaving players to freely explore its world. There is no one to hold your hands, no markers to tell you where to go, and no right path to choose. Around every corner lurks danger and there is no such thing as a safe place. You are basically told right from the start that you are screwed in this forsaken world, and it’s for that reason (and others) is why I love this series.

Mistakes were made that day.

Mistakes were made that day

Dark Souls 2 continues to build upon Dark Souls 1’s world, though this time, you’ll be exploring the far coastal kingdom of Drangleic instead of Lordran. You begin your journey into darkness as a cursed character, like all previous installments. You don’t know what has happened, or why the Kingdom of Drangleic has fallen and with every passing moment, your body slowly begins to give in to the Hollowing, fearfully trying to resist becoming undead.

There are a lot titles out there today that enjoy giving you the straight facts about the game’s story, but the Souls series has never been about that. It’s all so beautifully lacking in narration (never thought I would say that), leaving players to discover and piece together the story themselves through exploration, victory, and death. Despite already putting in over 100 hours of playtime, there is still so much to be discovered, though having a few friends along doesn’t hurt.

The single player campaign can be explored and beaten online. But if you are connected, it’s not really a “single player” game anymore, but rather a combined entity of single player and multiplayer experiences. Blood stains are left by other players who have perished to the unknown, giving you helpful insight as to how they died and what dangers might await you. Messages placed on the ground are left by other players, sometimes warning you, sometimes deceiving you. In addition, at any given moment, another player can jump into your world through invasions and destroy whatever little progress you may have been attempting to accomplish.

The line between both single player and multiplayer disappears in Dark Souls 2 and the way the two mix is near brilliant. Other players who invade your world don’t feel like other players, but instead appear as if they are rooted into the world itself. You are playing alone, but you really aren’t.

Lets do this bro!!

Lets do this, bro!

Dark Souls 2 operates on a leveling system, though you don’t exactly gain any XP that is put towards your level like in most RPGs. Instead, after defeating any enemies, you are rewarded Soul Points, which can be used for leveling up, buying items, or performing certain in-world actions. Souls Points, in a sense, are like XP points, except you have to manually put it towards your level, if you so choose, which can only be done from the main hub area. You also lose all of your points if you die, and trust me, you will die a lot. When you level up, you don’t gain attributes to all of your stats. Instead, each stat has its own level, which allows you to creatively mold your own build. Two level 50s could be completely different from one another. One could be more focused on higher physical hit points, whereas another could have much higher health, yet weak attacks. The build possibilities are endless when you factor in character class, level build, armor set, and weapons.

As mentioned, friends also can play a crucial role in your experience. Dark Souls 2 continues along with the series’ classic three-player co-op, though gaming with friends has become a whole lot easier (a complaint in past titles). However, it wouldn’t be a Souls title if you didn’t have to work for it, meaning you can’t just simply start a fresh game and play co-op from the get go without getting blood on your hands. Getting a summoning stone, required to play co-op, is a journey of its own. In fact, you can very will miss the opportunity to even pick one up, making it difficult to play co-op with friends. It’s things like this though that really pushes a player to explore more and learn all about the back story of the world.

In Dark Souls 2, there are special conditions required to play co-op, or even invade another player. The summoning system works only if you are in a Human state form, which is achievable with certain items. You’ll also need to be within a certain soul range of the host. You can’t join or invade a player’s world if, say, you are soul level 100 and they are 20. This is obviously to set balance, though at this very time, it’s unknown exactly how big the maximum range is. You’ll also need a summoning stone in order to place down a soul sign.

If you have joined another player for co-op, you will be in their world or vice-versa. Everything will be structured the same as yours. However, any progress made in another’s does not reflect the progress made in your world. If you help someone to defeat a boss you haven’t defeated yet, then you’ll have to defeat that boss by yourself or by having players summoned into your world. Like I said, no one is holding your hand. But, to make playing with friends easier, as per requested in past Soul games, there is a ring that allows you to select a god. If both players are wearing the ring and select the same god, summoning one another becomes a whole lot easier instead of randomly hoping they see your soul sign.

bmUploads_2013-12-03_7668_DarkSpiritInvasion

Come at me!

Player vs. player is identical in terms of restrictions, except instead of a summoning stone, you must use an invasion stone. You’ll appear as a red phantom to the player that you are invading (or they’ll appear red if they are invading you). If you get really good at the game, it’s extremely enjoyable. In truth, it’s really abut being a big jerk to the target player, but this game is all about struggles and making things harder. My favorite thing about invading other players is that you can wear a ring that makes you appear as a White Phantom, which is what you appear as when you co-op with someone. It really confuses players thinking that they are apart of a co-op match, but, in reality, you’re just there to be that jerk.

The only real con about the multiplayer is the poorly structured Soul Memory system. It isn’t as much of a hassle in the beginning of the game as it is later one once you’ve racked up a ton of souls. It makes it hard to co-op with friends, or even at times with random players. If From Software does update the game with a patch, it’d be nice to see this frustrating system removed.

Despite what has been in this review so far, the world of Dark Souls 2 isn’t as gloomy and dark as it’s made out to be. Death is everywhere, yet life still blooms wherever your hero goes. Whereas past installments adopted colors of coldness, Dark Souls 2 opts for shades of deep warmth, creating a vast and beautiful atmoshpere. Although the lighting isn’t as spectacular as was shown during the initial reveal gameplay, it still looks astonishing staring out into the sunlit abyss. There is so much variety in its terrain, it’s easily one of those titles you stop playing for a bit just to stare at your surroundings. Though its atmosphere comes off as almost peaceful, you know better than that.

Yes, you will see some poorly detailed textures here and there, but honestly, for how big the game really is, I don’t really blame developer From Software, seeing that the studio is working with consoles that are eight years old. As for performance, at least during my own playthrough, I didn’t really notice any major drops in the frame-rate, despite some screen tearing.

Like I said, I’ve already put in 100+ hours into Dark Souls 2 and I honestly believe that I have only scratched the surface. I have played many open world RPGs from Final Fantasy to The Elder Scrolls, but let me tell you this: Those titles have nothing on Dark Souls 2 when it comes to replayability. Its world holds an uncountable number of secrets just awaiting to be found and boasts about 30 to 35 different boss types. Even if you were to defeat them all, New Game + ramps up the already gruelling difficulty level and, from what I understand, introduces new bosses and secrets.

5 / 5

At the tail end of a console generation, Dark Souls 2 is perhaps the biggest bang to go out with. It improves on literally every aspect of previous iterations and goes beyond the expectations set for it. It’s large, it’s colorful, and despite being filled with undead baddies, the game has a life of its own. It is the RPG that we have been waiting for.

Astro has released a firmware update for their A40 and A50 gaming headsets to better improve compatibility with Microsoft and Sony’s next-generation consoles.

Complaints of “crackling” during chat audio on both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have prompted the company to look into fixes. Users can visit Astro’s latest blog entry for instructions on how to download yesterday’s update.

The update primarily affects A50 and A40 MixAmp Pro owners and includes the following fixes and tweaks:

  • Reduce the mic volume and destroy static
  • Optimize side tone tuning for new mic levels
  • Fix side tone bug on Xbox mode boot
  • Increase overall compatibility with the Xbox One Stereo Chat Adapter

A50 users with the MixAmp TX can visit Astro’s official firmware page to get the latest updates there as well.

Last week, an Astro spokesperson told Polygon that both the Xbox One and PS4 “work a little differently” from previous consoles and “[require] some fine tuning of our products to make them work perfectly.” In that light, only Xbox One and PS4 users should be concerned with the new updates, says the company. Xbox 360 and PS3 need not apply.

Chat compatibility via wireless controller was recently granted to Xbox One users since the launch of the Xbox One’s new headset adapter and latest system update.

More Far Cry 4 Details Confirm Himalayan Setting and Elephant Riding

Building on previous rumors surrounding Far Cry 4 and its drastically different setting, it appears that Ubisoft’s next open world shooter will indeed take place in the Himalayan mountain range.

It will also offer up unique gameplay opportunities like enabling players to ride elephants, Eurogamer has confirmed with “people familiar with the project”.

Their sources say that PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 versions of the game are for certain. The title will also build upon gameplay elements found in 2012’s Far Cry 3 and 2013’s spin-off, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

Ubisoft is allegedly aiming for release before the end of March 2015, but will be giving anxious fans a first look at the title at this year’s E3 in June where they also plan to show off more of The Division, The Crew, and Assassin’s Creed Unity.

Bungie Has “Special Rewards” Set Aside for Destiny Beta Testers

Destiny fans who participate in the beta this Summer can expect some “special rewards”, says Bungie community manager “DeeJ”.

When asked in a recent Q&A session if early testers can expect any sort of special treatment in the final release of the game, DeeJ explained that the world will know who were “among the first to the fight”.

“I’ve seen a couple of special rewards that have been set aside for people who play this game before it launches, officially. If you’re brave enough to be among the first to fight, the world will know about it.”

Bungie is set to launch an official beta for Destiny this Summer, giving access to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 users first. Thus far, the easiest way to gain access is by simply pre-ordering the game.

Will you be “among the first to fight”?

Though he recently made it clear on Twitter that this will be the case, we’re not certain if the new content will be free of charge or paid DLC. As Zampella mentioned earlier, the studio will offer “free updates” alongside paid DLC, which players can secure at a discounted price by picking up the Titanfall Season Pass.

Curently, Titanfall sports five different game modes.

Titanfall recently got patched with an update that nerfed the Smart Pistol and adjusted the scoring in a few game modes, among many other things. Read up on all the details here.

What sort of modes would you like to see in Titanfall?
