Call of Duty: Ghosts Dev Explains Resolution Difference Between Xbox One and PS4

Following the news that Call of Duty: Ghosts’ resolution would differ between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game, Infinity Ward Executive Producer Mark Rubin explains some of the developmental hurdles the studio had to overcome, why the difference in resolution, and also why we shouldn’t worry for future Call of Duty titles on next-gen hardware.

Speaking to EuroGamer, Rubin explained how working with the PC as well, as the SKUs of both current-generation platforms along side the SKUs of next-generation platforms, all which differed from one another, “was a massive challenge.”

“Working with the theoretical hardware would have been a disaster if… honestly, the hardest thing to deal with is not the architecture. It’s the OS (operating system) of the systems. That’s the thing that comes on the latest. The Xbox One’s OS on their box versus the Sony OS, becomes the hardest. All the SDKs and stuff you have to work with – that’s the stuff that changes, not the hardware itself.”

“Earlier, we learned that Call of Duty: Ghosts on the PlayStation 4 would run at a native 1080p resolution while the Xbox One version would run at an upscaled 1080p resolution. When asked if it was one particular factor that caused the difference, Rubin answered, “In a way.”

“I don’t know if I can point to one particular cause. Early on, we didn’t know where exactly the resolution of anything would fall because we didn’t have hardware or the software to support it. We tried to focus in on 1080p, and if we felt like we were on borderline of performance somewhere… We tried to make the best decision for each platform that gives you the best-looking game we could get and maintains that 60 frames a second.

“There’s no specific, oh, well, the VO chat on Xbox took up so much resources that we couldn’t do 1080p native. There’s no definitive one to one per se cause and effect. It’s just an overall thing. We took each system individually and said, ‘okay, let’s make the best game for each system.’

“I think both look great. Some people might notice if they had them right next to each other. Some people might not. The Xbox One is 1080p output, it’s just upscaled hardware wise.

“It was a late decision, too. That call wasn’t made until a month ago.”

He added that while it might have been possible to get Call of Duty: Ghosts running at 1080p on the Xbox One, it might have also interfered with the game’s frame rate, which is something the studio did not want to compromise on, understandably.

“It’s very possible we can get it to native 1080p,” he said. “I mean I’ve seen it working at 1080p native. It’s just we couldn’t get the frame rate in the neighbourhood we wanted it to be.”

“And it wasn’t a lack of effort. It wasn’t that it was like last minute. We had the theoretical hardware for a long time. That’s the thing you get pretty quickly and that doesn’t change dramatically. It was more about resource allocation. The resource allocation is different on the consoles. That huge web of tangled resources, whether it’s threads-based or if it’s GPU threads or if it’s memory – whatever it is – optimisation is something that could go theoretically on forever.

“I definitely see slash hope both platforms will look way better the next time we get a chance at it. As an obvious analogy – and if people are not sure about this it’s pretty simple – look at Call of Duty 2 versus COD 4. It was a massive leap forward in graphics, and that’s just because it takes time to get through this.

“First launch, first time at bat at a new console is a challenging one. That’s just the way it is. For people fearful one system is more powerful than the other or vice versa, it’s a long game.”

Those last words. What do you think about it? Are we hyping up these technical issues beyond their real importance? Hopefully, we’ll see future titles on both consoles all running at high frame rates and resolutions.

Battlefield 4 – DICE Details Launch Issues Being Looked Into, Fixes Incoming

Though Battlefield 4‘s launch this week is an appreciable improvement over Battlefields 3’s in 2011, it’s not without its hiccups. PC users are reporting significant crashing issues while others are reporting various bugs and glitches.

Rest assured, however, as developers DICE have acknowledged our troubles. So, what exactly is studio aware of and looking into, you might ask? All that and more as been detailed in a recent Battlelog forum entry, so let’s check out what they had to say:

Game crashes and freezes

ELIMINATED AS WE IDENTIFY THEM

Players on all formats have been experiencing game crashes and freezes while playing. We have logs of the most frequently occurring client crashes, and we are actively working to Obliterate the cause of these crashes in upcoming updates.

Note that crashes come in different types, and therefore this is technically not one single issue. There are two kinds of crashes and two types of updates that can address them: server-side updates that we can release on the fly (four of these have already been released since launch), and game client updates that require more in-depth testing and certification before they can go live.

We have found and eliminated some of the server-side crashes on PC in the latest server update (version R4) that went live November 1. There is also a planned client update on PC in the near future where we are aiming to eliminate as many of the client-related crashes as possible.

Progress in Multiplayer Lost

INVESTIGATING

Players have reported losing their progress in multiplayer. This is probably related to crashes stopping the game reports from being sent to Battlelog. We are still investigating this issue in more detail. Note that your progress sometimes can seem to be reset during server maintenance windows. In these cases, your stats will be just fine and reappear later.

Single Player Save File Corrupted

INVESTIGATING

We are still investigating the issue of single player save files being corrupted for some players. If you have experienced this problem, please describe below the steps leading up to the save file being corrupted, your platform (PC, PS3 or X360), and when the issue occurred. If you’re on PC, please also list your OS and system specs.

Miscellaneous Audio Bugs

FIX UPCOMING

We are aware of the issues with missing/corrupted audio in multiplayer and have created a fix for them. This fix is planned for release in the next PC client patch (see “Upcoming Updates” below.)

Magazine Reload Bug on Normal

FIXED

On all platforms, some players were experiencing a bug when playing on Normal servers. The bug caused the reload setting to incorrectly mimic the behavior from Hardcore servers. This was fixed in our fourth and latest server update.

Xbox 360 Missions not Working as Intended

FIXED

There was a bug preventing Xbox 360 players from creating MISSIONS. This should now work properly, as we made some necessary changes to the backend infrastructure.

Battlefield 4 Premium “Reset Stats” Feature Not Working

FIX ROLLING OUT

Battlefield 4 Premium members have the option of resetting their multiplayer stats. This feature has not been working as intended. We have now identified the cause and solution, and Battlelog will perform a zero downtime fix for this that should roll out very soon.

Server Queues not Functioning

PENDING FUTURE PATCH

Players haven’t been able to join queues for servers, and we are actively working on the issue. We believe we have a solution to this, pending a future patch. We disabled server queues as we found a bug in the queue system, and we are working to isolate the real issue and find a solution for it.

Promotional Battlepack Items Not Appearing In-game and/or on Battlelog

INVESTIGATING

We are aware of this issue, and are working on a solution for it. Note that in some cases the Battlepack items will actually show up after a delay. If you’re still not seeing your items after 12 hours or so, please reach out to EA Help at https://help.ea.com/en/battlefield/battlefield-4 [help.ea.com].

What’s Next? Upcoming Updates

We are working on a PC client patch at the moment and hope to release it soon. We will share the patch notes once we have the patch contents finalized. The main focus is to fix as many crashes as possible, starting with the issues affecting a large number of players. We will update you once we are ready to release new server updates. We are currently working on server update #5, with four being released so far.

Call of Duty: Ghosts – Infinity Ward Teases Broadcast Mode and eSports Settings

Infinity Ward is not forgetting about eSports when it comes to Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Without a doubt, Treyarch brought competitive Call of Duty to the forefront last year with Black Ops 2 and the introduction of modes like League Play and COD Caster. It led to the game’s rise in Major League Gaming circles and even a $4 million tournament put on by Activision called the Call of Duty Championship.

According to the publisher, the Call of Duty Championship will return, featuring Call of Duty: Ghosts on the Xbox One.

But to get eSports enthusiasts and competitors even more excited about Ghosts’ future and show that they mean business, Infinity Ward today teased a brief Vince video revealing that Call of Duty: Ghosts will include a Broadcaster Mode and eSports game settings so players can enjoy a more competitive experience, if they choose.

Screen Shot 2013-11-02 at 11.53.50 AM

Screen Shot 2013-11-02 at 11.54.06 AM

You can catch the Vine teaser right here.

The news should make competitive gamers rather happy, though it’s surprising Infinity Ward would announce it so quietly. Perhaps we’ll hear more closer to or shortly after launch.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Extinction Classes In Detail

In Call of Duty: Ghosts Extinction, you and three others will fight off an alien infestation in the aftermath of the events that took place during the single player campaign.

You can go in blind hoping for the best, but the newly introduced co-op game mode will reward those who fulfill their duty in specific roles and work together as a team. You’ll be able to play as one of four classes, each with their unique ability and advantages.

Recently, developers Infinity Ward have detailed each class so you’ll know what you’re getting into when Call of Duty: Ghosts launches this November 5.

Check out the specifics below, and don’t forget to catch some of the latest gameplay showing off the new mode in action.

Weapon Specialist

  • 20% more bullet damage.

The Weapon Specialist focuses on one vital task: destroy as many aliens as possible. The extra bullet damage really comes in handy when dealing with heavily armored threats or when fighting back a swarm of smaller enemies. Weapon handling continues to improve as the Weapon Specialist gains levels.

Tank

  • 25% more health.

The brute of the group, Tanks stand at the front and take hits that would otherwise knock out other, more fragile classes. The extra health lets you play more aggressively, getting into the thick of things and coming out alive. Additional levels further improve the Tank’s health in addition to their lethality.

Engineer

  • Provide armor for the drill and earn more bonus cash.

Without a functioning drill, your team will have a very difficult time progressing. The Engineer offers much needed protection to the team’s drill, incredibly useful during moments when you get overwhelmed. Drill maintenance and trap efficiency improve as the Engineer gains levels.

Medic

  • Revive allies more quickly.

When things go wrong – and they will go wrong – the Medic’s there to pick up the pieces and get the team back in fighting condition. Fast revivals can mean the difference between success and failure, and an active Medic can help turn the tide of an intense battle. The Medic gains faster movement speed and powerful healing abilities with additional levels.

According to his latest blog entry, physical and digital copies of Call of Duty: Ghosts on both current- and next-gen platforms will not differ in any way from their physical counter-parts, save for its delivery method. That includes the bonus pre-order map, Free Fall.

“PS3 gamers will find it bundled with their digital preorder, and Xbox 360 gamers who are enrolled in the Xbox Live Rewards program and buy the digital edition of Call of Duty: Ghosts before November 18, 2013 will receive a Free Fall download token via email after that date (tokens will likely start going out the following week),” Amrich wrote.

He also noted that the download size for Call of Duty: Ghosts will be anywhere between 9GB and 13.5GB, depending on your region, due to localization efforts. The same can be expected for those wishing to install all of the data from a physical disc on to their hard drive. It is, however, significantly reduced from the 40GB PC version of the game.

In Double XP-related news, Infinity Ward has detailed a few points you may want to know when taking part in the upcoming Double XP launch weekend event for Call of Duty: Ghosts.

1. When is the Call of Duty®: Ghosts 2XP Launch Weekend?

3. On which platforms is the 2XP Launch Weekend?

The 2XP Launch Weekend will be available on XBOX 360, PS3, Wii-U and PC.

4. Do I need to sign up for access to 2XP Launch Weekend?

You don’t need to sign up, just play Call of Duty: Ghosts Multiplayer on launch weekend.

5. Is Double XP Launch Weekend for next-gen platforms?

No, this Double XP Launch Weekend is only for the above, current-gen platforms. Stay tuned for future announcements on next-gen console Double XP Weekends.

6. Do the XP, stats and achievements I get during 2XP Launch Weekend transfer over when I upgrade to next-gen?

Multiplayer XP, stats and achievements you get playing on current-gen consoles will transfer to next-gen when you upgrade within console family (Xbox 360 to Xbox One, or PS3 to PS4).

The FAQ also hold a lot of details for future-Season Pass holders and European fans looking for midnight launch info, so be sure to read up on it here if you’re interested.

PlayStation Plus, the premium game membership for PlayStation home and handheld consoles, delivers unlimited access to a regularly refreshed collection of full games, discounts, exclusive beta access, online storage for game saves, and much more.

If I’m not a PlayStation Plus member but I log into a PS4 system owned by a PS Plus member, will I be able to play online multiplayer?

Yes. If you don’t have a PS Plus membership, you can still access online multiplayer modes if you log into a PS4 which is set as “Primary” by a PS Plus member. This means that, for example, if one housemate is a PlayStation Plus member, everyone in the household will have access to online multiplayer. Additionally, on the same PS4 system, any games or content purchased by one user are available to other users who play on that console (unless that content has expired).

How many users can play online multiplayer modes on a single PS4 system set as “Primary” by a PS Plus member?

All users can play online multiplayer modes. Up to four users can log in simultaneously to a single PS4 system, and all will have access to multiplayer as long as PS4 is set as “Primary” by a PS Plus member.

  • Web browser
  • PlayStation App services (on iOS/Android devices)

Storage

Will users be able to replace PS4’s stock 500GB hard drive? What hard drive sizes are supported?

PS4 owners will be able to replace PS4’s standard hard drive. PS4’s hard drive is used to store downloaded game and video content, game save files, gameplay movies and images, and more.

What type of hard drive does PS4 use?

PS4 is equipped with a 5400 RPM SATA II hard drive. Users can choose to install a new hard drive so long as it complies with these standards, is no thicker than 9.5mm, and is larger than 160GB.

Will users be able to connect an external hard drive to expand storage on PS4?

No, this feature is not supported on PS4.

Remote Play

What is Remote Play?

Remote Play will enable users to stream their PS4 gameplay to their PS Vita system via WiFi, freeing up the television for other uses. SCEA expects that most PS4 titles will support Remote Play unless the title requires a special peripheral like PlayStation Camera.

When will Remote Play work best?

Remote Play will work best when the PS Vita system is located within the same WiFi network where PS4 is connected. We also recommend that PS4 be connected to the local area network via an Ethernet cable, that a router suitable for gaming be used and that the PS Vita system be within close proximity of the WiFi access point so that the connection is free of interference.

Can Remote Play work outside the user’s home network?

We strongly recommend that Remote Play be used within the same WiFi network where PS4 is connected. Remote Play may or may not work over a wide area network. For Remote Play to function over a wide area network, a robust and stable WiFi connection and broadband Internet connection is required, and the local area network where PS4 is connected must be configured to permit the PS Vita system to access PS4.

What do you guys/gals make of all this information? Anything else in the FAQ get your attention? Let us know in the comments below.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Xbox One and PS4 Resolutions Confirmed By Infinity Ward

Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin has confirmed the resolution levels at which both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts will be running at when it launches on those consoles November 15 and November 22, respectively.

In a recent update, Rubin wrote that while the PlayStation 4 version of Ghosts will run at native 1080p and at 60 frames per second, the Xbox One version will run at 1080p upscaled from 720p, though still at 60 frames per second.

Hey, been on the road last couple weeks so haven’t had a chance to update, but wanted to confirm that for Xbox One we’re 1080p upscaled from 720p. And, we’re native 1080p on PS4.  We optimized each console to hit 60 FPS and the game looks great on both. Still on the road, but glad to see the great reception to Extinction.  Can’t wait for next week’s launch.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a bit of a disparity between two versions of the same game. More recently, Battlefield 4 was confirmed to run 900p natively on the PlayStation 4 and 720p natively on the Xbox One.

So, on which platform are you buying Call of Duty: Ghosts? Does resolution matter that much to you?

Planetside 2 Will Miss PS4 Launch, Delayed Until ‘Early 2014’

It appears Sony Online Entertainment’s popular free-to-play MMOFPS Planetside 2 won’t be coming out this year after all. Speaking with TV station Bloomberg West, President of SOE John Smeadley had this to say about their free-to-play PS4 titles:

As part of Sony, we’re actually helping the launch of the Sony Playstation 4 on Nov. 15th by having our free-to-play game DC Universe Online. We’ll be following that up early next year with our next game Planetside 2.”

You can always check out our previous coverage of Planetside 2 to help tide you over until its launch in Early 2014.
