Dauntless Update 1.76 Drops for 1.9.1, Here’s Everything New

Phoenix Labs has released Dauntless update 1.76, or what the studio calls the Dauntless “New Dawn” update version 1.9.1! This brings new rumours, rebalanced island events and more! Check out the complete Dauntless Feb. 3. patch notes here.

Dauntless Update 1.76 Patch Notes | Dauntless Update 1.9.1 Patch Notes | Dauntless February 3 Patch Notes:

NEW RUMOURS

Take on Sahvyt while wearing a full set of their armour to unlock two new rumour quests. Complete them to acquire the Living Blade Antennae helmet transmog and the Living Blade Carapace chest transmog.

SAINT’S BOND BEGINS

The season of love is returning to Ramsgate. The Saint’s Bond event starts on February 10 and ends on February 17. Embrace the love with new cosmetics, quests, an event pass, and more!

ISLAND EVENT BALANCE

We’ve rebalanced even more island events in 1.9.1 to either reduce their completion time, reduce chaos, or to keep their narratives cohesive. We want all events to be enjoyable experiences that make sense in the world of Dauntless. See below for a full list of island event balance changes. Stay tuned for more changes in 1.9.2.

BALANCE

GAMEPLAY

  • Decreased Frostwülf weapons’ unique effect damage from 60/100 to 50/70 (default/power surged).
  • Decreased Sahvyt weapons’ unique effect damage from 250/350 to 250/325 (default/power surged).
  • Increased Bastion’s Slam shield conversion rate from 150% to 175% to increase damage output.
  • Increased Tempest’s base damage from 400 to 450.
  • Slightly increased Tempest’s range of detection for unbroken parts hits.
  • Decreased Revenant’s per-orb health regen amount from 125 to 115.
  • Decreased Discipline’s passive critical chance and damage bonus from 10% to 8%.
  • Increased Discipline’s cooldown time from 15s to 17s.
  • Decreased the amount of weapon XP required on the Reforged Slayer’s Path node from 28,000 to 27,500.

Embermania Island Event

EMBERMANIA ISLAND EVENT

We reduced the amount of competing factors that were at play in this early island event. This event is now focused on fighting multiple Embermanes instead of styxians and other modifiers.

  • Removed Danger Zones in stage one and increased the number of Embermanes from one to two.
  • Stage two is now a Lesser Embermane and a Bloodfire Embermane instead of two Lessers with styxians.
  • Removed styxians from stage three.

Blast Zone Island Event

BLAST ZONE ISLAND EVENT

This event already served as a nice introduction to island-specific events and modifiers, so changes here are light touch and intended to reduce overall chaos.

  • Removed smollusks from stage one.
  • Danger Zone modifiers are no longer tied to the Behemoth in stage one.
  • Removed smollusks from stage two.
  • Removed Danger Zones and shock attacks from Behemoths in stage two.
  • Danger Zone is now a general modifier in stage two.

Swarmageddon Island Event

SWARMAGEDDON ISLAND EVENT

With four stages, this was the longest event in the game. Reducing the number of stages to ensure it takes a similar amount of time to other events was important. The event has also been updated to keep the flying and insect theme running all the way through.

  • Reduced event from four to three stages.
  • Increased the number of Behemoths in stage one’s spawn pool, including Sahvyt.
  • Stage two is now a dual Behemoth fight with one of the Behemoths being Rezakiri or Valomyr.
  • Stage two’s Swarm modifier no longer attaches to Behemoths in the event and will now remain throughout the round regardless of which Behemoth dies first.
  • Stage three is a dual Behemoth fight that allows for two Rezakiri and up to one Valomyr.
  • Stage three now has a larger total number of swarms.

Rock and Roll Island Event

ROCK AND ROLL ISLAND EVENT

This event appeared on islands with two other unique events: Swarmageddon and Melting Point. We made the choice to move it to Paradox Breaks, giving the island a distinct event of its own. This is an early exploration of how it feels to expand the diversity of Behemoths in events, so long as it doesn’t conflict with the core element of the island — in this case, the radiant element.

  • Event has been removed from Razorcliff Isle and Hades Reach.
  • Event has been added to Paradox Breaks.
  • Event now only has single Behemoth rounds to allow it to exist alongside Chronovore’s event.
  • Behemoth pool has been expanded to allow for more rocky and rolling Behemoths, such as Phaelanx and Deepfrost Skarn.
  • Gruk-gruks and blaze bombers spawn across all rounds but have a 60 second delay before respawning.
  • Primal Containment modifier added to round two.
  • Elder Spikes modifier added to round three.
  • All rounds of this event grant a Chronostone.

Melting Point Island Event

MELTING POINT ISLAND EVENT

This event was overloaded with several kinds of fauna and up to three modifiers at a time. The throughline of this event is now blaze bombers for fauna, and splitting lava with inferno as modifiers.

  • Event now has three stages, and the fauna-only stage was removed.
  • Removed Blaze Danger Zones and Combustion modifiers from all stages they existed in.
  • Stage one modifier is now just Inferno.
  • Stage two and three now have Splitting Lava.
  • Each stage has blaze bombers with a 45 second respawn time after being defeated.
  • Removed gruk-gruks from this event.
  • Hellion in round three no longer has increased health.

Toxic Behavior Island Event

TOXIC BEHAVIOR ISLAND EVENT

The small changes here were made to trim the Behemoth pool down to the theme and remove excess fauna and modifier clutter.

  • Removed all neutral Behemoths from the spawn pool.
  • Added Koshai to the spawn pool.
  • Removed smollusks from all stages.
  • Increased Behemoth variety for the final duo fight.

Poison Personality Island Event

POISON PERSONALITY ISLAND EVENT

As one of the newest events, Poison Personality largely follows our updated design philosophy, so only minor changes were made.

  • Stage one now has the Poison Blood modifier.
  • Stage two now has Poison Blood and Terra Danger Zones modifiers.
QUALITY OF LIFE

Audio

AUDIO

  • Refined Bastion’s active ability’s sound effects.
BUG FIXES:

GAMEPLAY

  • Aegis will now get consumed before Sturdy instead of being consumed simultaneously.
  • Healing orbs now properly appear when dealing damage to a Behemoth under the terra status effect.

Cosmetics

COSMETICS

  • The Treasure Hunter’s Hat transmog now comes with hair.
  • Fixed clipping issues on Ragnar’s Bryjind, First Warden’s Bryjind, Warden Scout’s Bryjind, Warden Defender’s Bryjind, Draskscale Plate, Rapturous Handwraps, and Treasure Hunter’s Cloak.

Axe

AXE

  • Charging the axe while in midair no longer causes the player to rapidly drop to the ground.

Chain Blades

CHAIN BLADES

  • Meter no longer resets when using the Chain Slam while momentum is less than four.
  • Fixed an issue where chain blades would sometimes stop generating momentum.

Sword

SWORD

  • Removed an exploit where the sword’s special meter remained after changing equipment.
  • In the Hunting Grounds, The Hunger’s Feast special now ends when there are no more active threats in the player’s current encounter.

Drask

DRASK

  • Lesser Drasks no longer remain stuck in a loop if their teleportation behaviour fails.

UI

UI

  • Fixed various typos.
  • Added seasonal challenges that were missing in 1.9.0.

Apex Legends Mad Maggie Character Trailer Showcases Her Abilities

We’re just a few days away from the start of Apex Legends’ Defiance season! The big content included here is, of course, the new legend “Mad Maggie.” Respawn has today released the Apex Legends Mad Maggie character trailer which features her abilities.

A cutthroat warlord and self-proclaimed freedom fighter, Mad Maggie finds herself in Apex Legends: Defiance forced into becoming the Apex Games’ newest Legend as punishment for her vicious attacks across the Outlands. Despite entering the Arena as a death sentence, Maggie looks to turn the tables on her would-be executioners and bring the games down.

  • Passive – Warlords Ire: Maggie can sense when there’s blood in the water. When she deals damage to her enemies, they become highlighted for a short period of time, making it easier for her to trace them. And don’t bother running: Maggie moves even faster when carrying a shotgun.

  • Tactical – Riot Drill: Nowhere is safe. Maggie’s Riot Drill attaches to objects and burns enemies that have taken cover on the other side, flushing them out.

  • Ultimate – Wrecking Ball: The embodiment of Maggie’s love of destruction, the Wrecking Ball leaves speed boosts in its wake when thrown, and explodes brutally upon enemy contact.

Apex Legends Defiance season will kick off this February 8! Once the update is out, we’ll be sure to let our readers know. Go check out the upcoming new mode Control, right here.

OlliOlli World Review: Around the World in 80 Drop-Ins (Xbox Series)

Skateboarding seems to have made a major cultural comeback in recent years. It was in the Olympics, we got remastered version of the first two Tony Hawk games, and they’re making another Skate game. Even with all that, the existence of OlliOlli World is, in a way, a pretty cool realization. Considering this series started as a small release for the Playstation Vita and PS3 that in a lot of ways, felt like an advanced flash game. Two full games and their different editions later, we have arrived at the third and biggest game in the franchise yet. As happy a story of fan support and continued passion by the developers at Roll7 as this game is, what remains to be seen is if it lives up to the reputation of the series. Let’s talk about it!

No, Actually There’s Lots of FX.

As someone who is familiar but has not played much of the previous games I went into this knowing that it was a skateboard-themed platformer and had a reputation for being fiendishly difficult. OlliOlli World has not disappointed me on either of these fronts.

The game opens with a cinematic explaining the nature and lore of this universe. Radlandia is a magical land founded through the power of Gnar by the Skate Godz, a mythological version of a skate crew like the Z-Boys, Shake Junt, or Tiltmode Army, who each created a region of the continent to match their personality and style. The Skate Wizard was established to maintain order, and is a human that has reached such a high level of skate ability and connection with the Gnar that they can be a link between the Skate Godz and mortal humans. You are destined to follow this path and become the Skate Wizard. It’s a funny, silly fiction that sets up what your narrative mission is going to be before taking you to the character creator.

The Gameplay is along a 2D plane but the world is fully 3D.

The art and narrative backdrop show their inspirations on their sleeves. Though there are clear allusions to cartoons like Avatar the Last Airbender, and the stories of several of the Tony Hawk games the most prevalent inspiration is Adventure Time. This could have easily been a licensed game for that series with just a few minor tweaks and the inclusion of the main characters. It all fits the mood the development team is clearly trying to invoke and it has a silly funny air across the board. I wasn’t crazy about it initially, but I must say that it really grew on me, and it gives OlliOlli World a personality and sense of place the previous games really didn’t have before.

Musically I can’t say the same. The soundtrack is composed of easy listening electronica and soft EDM which is very relaxing and admittedly not to my taste and feels slightly at odds with the fast gameplay and colorful graphics. It’s not annoying or abrasive but doesn’t seem to add much to the experience. I found that this is a fantastic game to play while listening to a podcast or your own music. Music as always in my opinion is the hardest part of a game to measure for quality since music is more personal than other aspects of video games, so your mileage may vary. For what it is worth, it isn’t that the music is bad as much as it feels like it doesn’t match. Though I know our very own James would disagree with that statement as he loved the soundtrack.

Magnified Plaid Pants and Skirts With Slick Shoes

As I said, after the opening cinematic you are immediately taken to the character creator. While it is not as detailed as something like the Saints Row games, it is still detailed enough to allow for some fun combinations. As the game progresses and you complete challenges you unlock a pretty wide array of clothing and gear options. It is a mixed bag, as there is quite a bit of filler that amounts to the same item in a few different colors or with different designs or patterns that you can’t really differentiate from similar pieces in gameplay. But I found that going back to change out gear every few levels when I earned something cool was a nice feature that made character creation a game-long process, which I appreciated. I really felt like my character was growing and changing as he was on this trip to meet the Skate Godz.

After character creation you get to meet the core crew you’re traveling with. The current Skate Wizard named Chiffon, the senior most member of the crew and old school gear head everyone calls Dad, Mike who’s a big man that loves smashing things and pushing his limits (evidenced by his metal leg) who runs a skateboarding magazine, and Suze the sassy videographer of the group. They’re looking for the new Skate Wizard since Chiffon wants to retire. You impress them with your ability to Olli (something you’d expect would be more common on a continent created for the sole purpose of skateboarding) and it’s off on your quest.

Your player character on the far left and all the characters as listed above from left to right. A pretty solid crew to go on this adventure with.

The Offspring of Donkey Kong and Tony Hawk Would be the Best Skater Ever

You are taken to a map screen with circles along the path you’re traveling. Similar to the game referenced in the title, Super Mario World, there are the main levels and detour bonus levels that sometimes have unique completion requirements or rules. There are five worlds full of these levels plus Gnarvana, which hosts a random level generator and a trick score competition mode to play the same short auto generated level as other players to compete for high scores. All of these worlds are unique and interesting. I particularly liked CloverBrook and BurntRock: the Forest and Desert worlds respectively.

Gameplay-wise the inspirations are also very well chosen and apparent. Structurally it is very similar to the Super Nintendo classics like Donkey Kong Country, and as stated, Super Mario World. Every level has the basic requirement of simply getting to the end of the run to move on to the next level, as well as another for doing the whole level in one go without crashing, three unique challenges for doing specific things in the level, and three increasing score goals that are presented as being the records of the local skate crew for that run. The basic level completion goal is easy enough, and even the one consecutive run goal is usually not overly difficult. The difficulty comes from the six additional challenges. Some are easier than others of course, but as the game goes on they become increasingly hard to the point that I’m surprised some of the late game scores or challenges are even possible. As a long time 2D platforming fan, it all feels homey and roped me right in. Playing through for review has taken longer than it should have because I found myself spending literally hours hitting my head against one challenge or another over and over to finally complete them. Even after this review is posted, I think I’m still going to be trying for the platinum.

The Forest is full of billboards to wallride. Yes the game does acknowledge this irony.

The gameplay is best described as a combined and spun out version of the minecart levels from the Donkey Kong Country games with a modified version of the controls from Skate. You push the left stick in a direction and release it to jump and do the four basic tricks and hold the stick in one of the four directions to grind. Add in the triggers to spin, the right stick to do grab tricks, and spinning the left stick into different combinations and you get a pretty wide set of tricks. A/X (depending on platform) is the push kick button. It’s an unusual control system that makes sense given the nature of the game. It took me nearly the first third part of the game to really get used to it but I managed to grasp it nonetheless.

Verdict

Ultimately, if you are a skating or platforming fan, or you just like a stiff challenge, OlliOlli World is a must-play. It’s a good game that knows what its inspirations are and doesn’t try to be more than what it is. I can see myself coming back to it for a long time and I’m excited that we are getting such a solid start to the year.

Score: 8.5/10

Pros:

  • A Fun and Creative Expansion of the World of OlliOlli
  • Solid Level Design that Offers Real Difficulty
  • Interesting Environments and Enjoyable Characters

Cons:

  • Difficulty Might Be Too Much for Some
  • Character Cosmetics Have a Lot of Filler

A review code for OlliOlli World was provided by the publisher and played on the Xbox Series X. You can read SP1st and MP1st’s review and scoring policy right here.

Nintendo Switch Unit Sales Now at Over 103 Million, Outsells the PSOne and Wii

Nintendo has now announced that Nintendo Switch units have outsold the total sales of the PSOne and Wii, which makes the Switch one of the best-selling Nintendo console of all-time.

Nintendo has announced its latest financial results today, and this includes new updated sale figures for the Nintendo Switch console. The console has now sold over 103.54 million units since its launch back in March 2017. This exceeds the 101.63 million sales of the original Wii and the 102.49 million units sold for the PSOne.

For comparison’s sake, the Switch is still behind sales of the PS4 which has sold 116.6 million units thus far. Even though the Switch sales are very impressive, it’s not the best selling Nintendo console yet, as this still is held by the handheld that could, the Game Boy,

The Game Boy and Game Boy Color sold 118.69 million units while the Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units. These are the best-selling Nintendo consoles of all-time.

For those wondering, the best selling console in history overall is the Sony PS2 with sales of over 155 million units. It will be interesting to see how many sales the Switch eventually sells once Nintendo retires the system in the future.

Battlefield 2042 February 3.3 Update Delayed to March to “Improve Quality of Updates”

Back in January, DICE announced that Battlefield 2042 players would be getting a refreshed scoreboard and more in patch 3.3, which is scheduled for release in “mid to late” February. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen this month. Included in today’s hotfix roll out is the announcement that the Battlefield 2042 February 3.3 update is being delayed to “early March.”

Here’s the announcement by DICE:

Our next Update after todays Hotfix will now roll out in early March. This is a change from our last messaging to you all on it’s intended release.

The extra time will help to ensure we improve the quality of our Updates, and include additional changes.

This is a bummer to hear for sure. Of course, given how there are issues connected to the patches DICE rolls out, this might be for the best. I mean, who’d want to have issues brought in by new patches that should be fixing issues in the first place, right?

In other Battlefield 2042 news, EA has admitted that the game failed to meet expectations. However, the publisher also believes DICE can turn things around since they’ve done it numerous times before.
