Rainbow Six Extraction Hands-On Preview – Three Is the Key

With the sudden re-emergence of PvE shooters like Aliens Fireteam Elite, Back 4 Blood, and more, Ubisoft is taking a stab at it with Rainbow Six Extraction — a PvE co-op shooter that’s steeped in Rainbow Six Siege’s lore. While the game is out soon  (January 20, 2022), MP1st managed to get some hands-on time with the game last month thanks to Ubisoft!

For long-time R6 Siege fans out there, you may be all familiar with how competitive and daunting the PvP experience can be — especially for those who have taken a hiatus from playing in between content drops. But make no mistake about it: fans of Rainbow Six Siege will undoubtedly feel right at home with Rainbow Six Extraction, as it has a bunch of elements that make Siege great, but centered on PvE this time around.

In total, I managed to get around four hours of game time, and it was a pleasant few hours of shooting.  Now, I will say I do love Rainbow Six Siege but the PvP experience can be daunting if you don’t play for a while and get tossed into an insanely hard match. The nice thing about Rainbow Six Extraction is that since you can control the difficulty level, you will never feel hard pressed taking a week or so break without getting pummeled hard by enemies.

In Rainbow Six Extraction you get the option to pick from New York City, San Francisco, Alaska and Truth or Consequences as city locations. It may seem like a small list but every single match in the listed cities played out differently depending on where you can proceed, or where the objectives are taking place. This helps spice the game a bit, as it offers a unique experience without it getting repetitive.

For those unaware: Rainbow Six Extraction is a three-player co-op game where each game has a set of objectives that you are tasked to do. You have the option to leave the game after completing just one, and most of the time you will only have three objectives to complete in a single match. That is, unless you pick the hardest difficulty (called Maelstrom Protocol) that has nine objectives you must complete, which is easier said than done. In my play session, we only got past two objectives before collectively getting downed by enemies. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to try out every single objective, and there were quite a number of objectives to keep you occupied for quite some time.

Make no mistake: if you aren’t someone who’s keen on teamwork, you will not get far in Extraction, as you’ll easily fall victim to the horde of enemies trying to end you and your cohorts’ lives.

Speaking of which, there is a decent selection of enemies you will encounter in Rainbow Six Extraction, each having their own weaknesses, and specific way of taking them out. Varying from having assassination as the only option to take it out or to having a fun explosive surprise. As well, there are random yellow spores laid out that if not dealt with by your friendly teammates they will explode on your operator and cause decent damage.

Extraction borrows a lot of its lore and elements from Rainbow Six Siege, and this should please fans of the game. Rainbow Six Siege players will feel right at home; from the Operators that have crossed over, to the whole tactical objective planning that must be done to achieve a successful victory. The typical options from Rainbow Six Siege are here as well: from customizing your loadout as well as your Operator skin with sick items that you will get from clearing levels.

At launch, there will be 18 Operators to choose from, and it will be a team decision on which Operator to use in each match. You di get to see what objectives you’re facing before selecting your Operator, which will help decide which ones are the best picks going into the match. Just like in Rainbow Six Siege, each Operator is unique in what they bring to the table. Choose wisely though. If the Operator you are playing as dies during the match, they are unfortunately going to be MIA (Missing in Action) until you play a few more matches. Each successful objective you complete grants you health towards all of your Operators. Given there are 18 of them in total, players will have plenty to choose from so there is a slim chance you will actually run out of characters to play as. Want to see how it plays out? Check out our hands-on gameplay footage below to see how I kill (and get killed)!

Based on my hands-on, Rainbow Six Extraction is looking to be a solid experience for fans of R6 Siege, and PvE fans in general. If you’re looking for something new to play with buddies, this is one extraction you might want to consider being part of.

Stay tuned for more Rainbow Six Extraction coverage here on MP1st, which includes an interview with the dev team.

Rainbow Six Extraction is set to launch this January 20, 2022 on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Seres X|S, and PC.

EA Director of Comms for Shooters Comments on Battlefield 2042 Silence; Says Expectations Are “Brutal”

Not happy with the current state of Battlefield 2042? Eager to hear what DICE has planned for the shooter this 2022? If so, you’re not alone. While we’re just in the first week of the new year, that hasn’t stopped BF2042 players and members of the community to ask DICE and EA just what is happening with the game.

Unfortunately, some of these people might have asked in a rather not-so-nice way, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. Over on Twitter, Global Director of Integrated Comms for Shooters & Star Wars at EA Andy McNamara acknowledged the silence from DICE and EA, though also comments how the studio isn’t in yet, and how fan expectations are “brutal” in a now-deleted tweet:

While McNamara has a point in that DICE devs have to rest and get back from vacation, the players who purchased and are playing (or have played) Battlefield 2042 have a point as well. Communication regarding the game, future updates, and other stuff haven’t exactly been on-point, which further adds to the community’s frustration.

Do you think the community and some of the game’s players are asking a bit too much in asking for communication chatter during the holidays or in the first week of the year, or should DICE and EA have already gotten an announcement or two done already? Let us know down in the comments.

Days Gone Director Pitched Open World Resistance; Wasn’t Interested in Syphon Filter Reboot

Just yesterday, Days Gone Game Director Jeff Ross mentioned that the open-world zombie game managed to crack over eight million units sold, though the higher ups at Sony made developer Bend Studio feel that the game was a big disappointment. If you think that’s juicy stuff, Ross isn’t done talking about the game and other projects within Sony. During a video chat with God of War creator and former Sony employee David Jaffee, Ross, alongside another former Bend Studio dev John Garvin, talked about the projects offered to the studio and some of the stuff they pitched that got rejected.

According to Ross, management didn’t want the studio to work on Days Gone 2, and was instead offered (by an unclarified party) to create a pitch for Syphon Filter, which Ross declined for good reasons.

I think it (Days Gone 2’s pitch) was dead on arrival. It did get reviewed from a level right above the studio, but I don’t think it went any further than that. I think the reviews were from the lens of the first one was a train wreck in so many ways and didn’t sell awesome, so lets keep these guys busy. They asked us, hey what about a Syphon Filter..

Host David Jaffe continued to probe for more answers revolving around the mention of the Syphon Filter pitch, which Ross mentioned he had “zero ideas” on how to reboot, and mentioned that he was pitching an open-world Resistance game.

Are there any other IPs that we have that we can use? And the only ones we had was Syphon Filter. But honestly I have zero ideas on how to reboot Syphon Filter, I was not interested in that at all. The pitch I was making was open world Resistance (which) would be fucking rad. All these open world loops that we figured out. It almost wrote itself with Resistance or so many aspects of that property that lends itself to open world gameplay. They weren’t interested in that either, and I don’t know how well it sold. They were interested in almost anything but a Days Gone 2.

While the studio was offered to give a pitch (meaning there was nothing more than just ideas) for Syphon Filter, Ross believed that even if they had decided to go that route, it wouldn’t have meant the project would have been greenlit, as he states, he believed it was more of a way to keep them busy and that it was never a genuine offer.

It seems any possibility of seeing Days Gone 2 become a reality is out of the window given Ross’ statements, but it is nice to know that Sony isn’t against reviving old IPs such as Syphon Filter. That said, an open-world Resistance game from the makers of Days Gone doesn’t sound like a bad idea, either. It’s a shame it doesn’t seem to have moved on past what Ross has said.

BioWare Posts Letter to Fans About State of BioWare; Hints at ‘Surprises’ Hidden in Mass Effect N7 Day Image

BioWare General Manager Gary McKay has posted a new letter talking about the “State of BioWare” which also acts as sort of a development update on both franchises’ upcoming entries. While nothing concrete was shared in terms of gameplay details, the studio did reveal that there are hidden secrets in the Mass Effect N7 Day image released last year.

At least five surprises are hidden in the image below, all relevant in the future of the Mass Effect series.

The open letter starts with the usual greetings, and McKay addressing the challenges that the studio went through during the pandemic and how they managed to cope during these extremely pressing times. McKay also mentioned the upcoming Legacy of the Sith expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic, set to launch next month, February 15.

However, the real standout of the open letter is the one pertaining to secrets hidden within the Mass Effect N7 Day promotional image released last November. It says:

And of course, we remain hard at work on the next iterations of Dragon Age and Mass Effect. I’m seeing some incredible work from both teams. If you’re curious about Mass Effect, I’d encourage you to take a look at the poster we released on N7 Day. If you look closely, there are a handful of hidden treats; by my count, there are at least five surprises, all of which point to an amazing future in the Mass Effect universe. As for Dragon Age, we have a veteran group of talented developers working on the next iteration of the franchise. We are focused on a single-player experience that is built on choices that matter.

We’ve attached the image below. Try and see if you can scout some of these “surprises” by yourself:

mass effect n7 day

See anything? The crew moving towards the crater has a Krogan in their ranks (left, maroon silhoutte) as well as an Asari (middle besides the Krogan). They also appear to be heading towards remains of some sort, which could set the tone for the next Mass Effect title. Perhaps a reunion with Shepard, with Wrex and Liara part of the team? We’ll have to wait and see.

You can read the letter in its entirety where Mckay talks about the pandemic, hiring from all parts of the world and more, right here.

Dead Cells Update 1.31 Out for The Queen & The Sea DLC This Jan. 6

Motion Twin has released the Dead Cells update 1.31 patch this January 6, and this one is for the long-awaited The Queen & the Sea DLC! Check out the full patch notes below for everything new.

Dead Cells Update 1.31 Patch Notes:

So what exactly is in it?

We’re adding two late-game biomes, which are alternative paths to High Peak Castle and Hand of the King, plus a boss biome.

The Infested Shipwreck

If the name of this biome didn’t already give you a clue, you’ll be fighting your way through the bowels of a rotten shipwreck with eldritch horrors lurking behind every corner. We’ve introduced some quirks to make it fresh for you guys.
There are platforms and floor sections that enemies can break, disrupting your movement and even dumping you onto the spikes below. Armoured shrimps chase you down and can move vertically and horizontally with ease, letting them attack you from any direction. Anchor throwers…throw anchors at you, who’d have thought it!

To combat this terrible threat, you’ll gain access to a formidable arsenal of nautical weapons such as a trident, a pirate hook and a… shark?

We’re also introducing another pet in the form of the Leghugger, a not-so-cute armoured shrimp thing with an insatiable hunger for flesh and a tendency for sudden growth spurts.

Finally, no journey into a shipwreck is complete without a treasure hunt! Collect the pieces of the torn-up treasure map and put it back together to find the mythical booty…

Lighthouse

Find your way through the shipwreck and you’ll reach the base of the lighthouse. We promised you something different with one of the biomes and now it’s the time to reveal what that is: the lighthouse is more or less a vertical chase scene & several miniboss fights combined, complete with rope pulleys, breakable barriers and deadly flames!
Scaling this soaring tower will be no easy task, as you’ll need to outrun rising flames from below. While fending off a trio of highly skilled warriors. At the same time. Just another day on the island!

Opportunities for rest will appear, but they will be short-lived. You are being chased by relentless killers after all…

The Crown

If you manage to make it through all of that unscathed (or at least alive) you’ll end up at the summit of the lighthouse in a bid to light the beacon and escape the island. However, to accomplish this feat you’ll need to triumph in a final duel against a familiar foe…

Beat the final challenge to discover a brand new ending…

  • New DLC : The Queen and the Sea!
  • Find your way to and explore two new coastal biomes, which are alternatives to the High Peak Castle and the Throne Room :

    – Infested Shipwreck, an unlikely amalgation of driftwood, home to unfortunate sailors who couldn’t escape the malaise in time, as well as… shrimps?

    – The Lighthouse, which seems to be your last hope of finally leaving this cursed island. Climbing to the top and lighting up that beacon can’t be a bad idea, right?

  • Two new bosses!

Fight against the alternative to Hand of the King, guarding the Lighthouse and trying to prevent you from reaching the top of it, where someone seems to be watching your every move.

  • This DLC also brings you 10 new items to unlock and add to your arsenal!

    6 Melee Weapons :

    – Abyssal Trident, which lets you charge towards your enemies and impale them, to inflict critical damage.

    – Hand Hook. Grab your foes and throw them behind you, for easy kills off the side of platforms, as well as that little bit of crowd control.

    – Maw of the Deep. A literal shark. And you can throw it. Yep. No, for real, where did the Beheaded find this.

    – Bladed Tonfas, whose damage scales upon your running capacity, with a big critical jump when at max speed.

    – Wrecking Ball, the heaviest weapon of them all. Quite hard to throw, but it will tear through crowds of unsuspecting mobs with ease.

    – Queen’s Rapier. Tear through reality (and your enemies) with the favorite weapon of the so-called Queen of the island!

  • 2 Ranged Weapons :

    – Throwing Cards. Shoot cards in various patterns and stick them in your enemies, before recalling them all to deal major damage!

    – Gilded Yumi, the heaviest bow of them all, with the heaviest arrows, and the heaviest hits. So heavy, in fact, that those arrows might just pick mobs up off the ground, and bring them along to their inevitable death.

  • 2 Skills :

    – Leghugger. A new pet, a baby evil shrimp, although this one seems to be quite more friendly. Let it free and it’ll quickly bite the life out of your opponents.

    – Scavenged Bombard. The Beheaded took inspiration from those pesky pirates and made his own automatic turret-cannon. The reloading is quite slow, but the damage it deals makes up for it.

  • As well as 15 new Outfits!

Balancing

  • Nerfed the attack power of Legendary Pets.
  • Pets now ignore lava and cannot die to it.
  • Increased Machete & Pistol‘s attack speed
  • Hard Light Sword‘s mark damage is now weaker at low marks and stronger at high marks.
  • Face Flask doesn’t grant recovery anymore. Note that the in-game description has only been updated for a few languages for now, with all other coming in the next patch. Sorry for the inconvenience.
  • Some weapons now destroy breakable grounds if the Ram rune has been obtained.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed a softlock when interacting with an object while in the Pollo Power transformation.
  • Fixed Armadillopack not parrying some of Spoiler Boss‘ attacks.
  • Fixed Lightning Bolt / Flamethrower not stopping when triggered from the backpack. For real this time.
  • Fixed the Blowgun‘s animation not stopping when shot from the backpack.
  • Fixed the Beheaded’s head disappearing during some cinematics.
  • Fixed the transition to Morass of the Banished not showing on the World Map.
  • Fixed a softlock when quitting the game while in the Binoculars‘ view.
  • Fixed the parallax elements showing incorrectly behind Undying Shores‘ ZDoors
  • Fixed The Giant‘s hands not doing anything after getting interrupted by the Giant Whistle.
  • Removed an unused pathfinding system, that was causing unnecessary long loading times.
  • Various visual and collision optimizations.

That’s about it for the patch

Apex Legends Upcoming Event “Dark Depths” Out This Jan. 11, Here’s What to Expect

Respawn Entertainment has just revealed their latest upcoming event for Apex Legends called “Dark Depths,” and this one is releasing a few days from now, on January 11! Check out more details on the event below, including a trailer that gives players a rundown on what to expect.

Here is an introduction on the event, as detailed on the YouTube teaser:

The waters of Storm Point may look clear, but the Legends know that danger lies within. Channel the might of the seas in the Dark Depths Event! Duke it out on the new Habitat Arenas map. Leviathans have survived there for decades: how long will you last? Grab new limited-time skins for Ash, Horizon, Lifeline and Fuse, and complete daily and weekly challenges to earn more rewards inspired by myths and legends of the deep.

EA has also released a blog on the Dark Depths event, and here is a rundown of everything new:

New Arenas Map: Habitat

Storm Point is just one of many islands in the New Antillia archipelago. Habitat 4 is one of the smallest islands in the chain, and is best known as a Leviathan breeding ground. Early IMC research groups were surprised to find that a large population of local Leviathans gravitated toward the island, and designated Habitat 4 as an ethology base to study the creatures’ behavior. It’s been over a century since then, and while the IMC is gone, the gentle giants they studied here remain.

Habitat 4 was inspired by Leviathans and how it would feel to fight in their breeding grounds. It represents our vision of an arena established in a natural environment, while holding true to the tentpoles of arena design. With that being said, one of Habitat 4’s key features is a large waterfall. Through the passage of time it has eroded the landscape, forming trenches and terraces of varied elevation. Making this island a paradise for slides and quick getaways.

Flash Events

Flash Events during Dark Depths are essentially individual prize tracks per week. So each week there will be a new set of unique prizes + 1 unique badge players can earn by completing challenges. Here’s a look at some of the rewards that will be available each week.

  • January 11th to January 18th
    • Key prizes include: Apex Packs, Epic Holospray, Load Screen

  • January 25th to February 1st
    • Key prizes include: Epic Revenant Holospray, Epic Alternator Skin, Epic Revenant Skin

These are just some of the rewards you’ll be able to earn!

Unlock themed cosmetics that turn the Legends into terrors from the deep. Purchase Legendary skins for Ash, Horizon, Lifeline and Fuse – or get a guaranteed new themed item in a Dark Depths Pack* and unlock cosmetics, weapon charms, trackers and more. Buy bundles or themed packs* to complete matching cosmetic sets for each Legendary skin, and complete daily and weekly challenges to earn prizes on the rewards track.

Dying Light 2 Dying 2 Know Final Episode to Air on January 13

Dying 2 Know has been quite the insightful look into Techland and their development of Dying Light 2, and now the developer has announced that the final episode is upon us. The series finale of Dying 2 Know is airing on January 13, and Techland has shared some early details on the upcoming video.

Announced over on the official Dying Light 2 Twitter account, the final episode preview was accompanied by a short video preview of everything players can expect in the series finale:

In keeping up with the usual Techland antics, the studio also shared a fun joke fact on the game’s development:

Fun fact:

Our Voice Actors, when recording dying scenes had to die in real life, luckily we hired group of necromancers on-site so no harm was done to anyone while keeping the most realistic voice acting standards

This tweet seems to imply that this last episode will have something to do with the game’s voice acting, but until it airs on January 13, we can’t be 100 percent sure. Of course, there’s also the chance that this may be the episode in which we finally see last-gen gameplay, as announced a couple of days ago.

In other Dying Light 2 news, you can check out the last episode of the Dying 2 Know series here which goes over UX/UI, and revealing to the fans that you can actually hide the HUD in the game for a much more immersive experience. If you’re interested to know how the game plays, go read our three-hour gameplay impression from the latest build of the game. We also posted loads of raw gameplay footage of our play session, too.

Ubisoft has released the (Assassin’s Creed) AC Valhalla update 1.041.200 patch this January 6 for both last-gen and next-gen! The patch is a minor one, and those on last-gen will see this as version 5.12, and this seems to be for a particular fix for the Yule Festival which kicked off last December 14!

AC Valhalla Update 1.041.200Patch Notes | Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Title Update 1.041.200 Patch Notes:

Ubisoft has made the following announcement regarding this patch:

We will be deploying Title Update 1.4.1.2 tomorrow, January 6th to resolve issues blocking players from progressing in the Yule Festival. Thank you for your patience!

Note that the festival will end on January 27th.

If Ubisoft releases a more detailed list of changes, we’ll be sure to update the post. If you spot anything that changed in the game or got fixed, leave a comment below to let us know.

For those who still haven’t picked up the game, our review gave it a favorable score, and said, “There is a lot to love about Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and personally it’s amongst my favorite in the series now. Enjoyable gameplay that lightens up on the RPG elements for the better, encased in a world with sights that are to be behold, Valhalla may have a slow start to it’s story, but the pay-off is well worth it. You just have to cope through the bugs and potential crashes, though we’re sure the developers are already hard at work with fixing these issues.”
