Battlefield 4 Rumor – GameStop Poster Suggests the Return of Commander Mode and Three Playable Factions [Updated]

Another promotional Battlefield 4 poster spotted at GameStop suggests the return of Commander Mode, and the ability to play as up to three different factions in Battlefield 4’s multiplayer.

Commander Mode was last featured in Battlefield 2142 – introduced in Battlefield 2 – and was a highly requested feature for Battlefield 3, though it was ultimately not included. It let players direct others from a top-down point of view, allowing for a more tactical view of the battlefield. It’s already been confirmed that Battlefield 4′ single player campaign will follow the story of only one soldier, meaning the inclusion of multiple factions would most likely apply to the multiplayer.

YouTuber luger700 spotted the poster in a local GameStop – a company who’s been at the center of a number of Battlefield 4 rumors as of late, the last being a reveal of the game’s release date – which lists these four key highlights:

  • Frostbite 3: Destructible environments and buildings!
  • 3 playable factions – Russia, China and United States
  • All our war! Vehicle combat and “Commander Mode” returns
  • Get access to the first expansion for FREE with reservation. $10 dollar value!

[youtube id=”7iezoe-8DGk” width=”618″ height=”378″]

In all honesty, the writing looks extremely unofficial, as if it was printed on the poster by an employee at this particular GameStop. The video claims that this employee got his or her info “direct from EA,” but that means squat when we only have one person’s word to go by. Lastly, it’s also worth noting that every Battlefield 3 expansion pack, so far, has been priced at a $15 value, not $10.

What’s makes this rumor worth a closer look, however, is that GameStop is clearly displaying the poster to its customers with this information. They are either very confident about this information, or trying to score some cheap pre-orders.

Update

Readers have pointed out the Sony PlayStation DE facebook page, which also indicates the inclusion of Commander Mode in Battlefield 4. Roughly translated, the page reads:

In the fourth installment in the popular Battlefield series is again the felt. The Return of Commander Mode promises to introduce more tactical depth.

Clearly, this lends more legitimacy to the rumor.

What do you guys think?

Thanks, Kriste, for the tip!

Black Ops 2 Double XP Weekend Extended ‘Til Tuesday, April 16

As many Xbox users may already know, Microsoft’s Xbox Live service ran into a few issues yesterday, rendering online services non-functional, including the ability to participate in this weekend’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 double XP event, for the majority of the day.

In response, developers Treyarch have decided to extend double XP goodness until Tuesday morning, giving you that extra day to rack up some additional XP.

At the moment, Xbox Live is, for the most part, up and running, though the official website lists a few services may still be experiencing difficulties. To stay up-to-date on the service’s current status, keep an eye on the official Xbox support website here.

Remember, Black Ops 2 Uprising DLC also drops this Tuesday for Xbox Live users, later for PS3 and PC users.

How’s your double XP weekend going so far?

Leaked Footage of a Cancelled Star Wars: Battlefront III, AKA “Version Two” – What Could Have Been

Earlier this month, we reported that video game publisher LucasArts went under. Layoffs ensued as the studio, recently acquired by Disney, was shut down. Development on games like Star Wars: 1313 and the rumored Star Wars: First Strike ceased with no future in sight.

Of particular interest to MP1st was the alleged free-to-play, multiplayer PC FPS, Star Wars: First Strike, which we learned was also considered a “predecessor” to Star Wars: Battlefront 3 by developers at LucasArts, intriguingly.

According to early reports by Kotaku, First Strike was meant to act as a testing ground for Battlefront 3, while still releasing as a full retail game in itself.

More recently, Kotaku learned of “Version Two,” a version of First Strike that was meant to eventually turn into Battlefront 3, according to their sources.

Unlike First Strike, Version Two featured vehicular combat, including memorable Star Wars vehicles like the hover-bike, X-Wing and Tie Fighter. Kotaku was also able to obtain leaked footage of the game in progress, which you can check out below:

[youtube id=”45OGvV4uXPc” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Looks pretty awesome, right? One could almost call it the Star Wars version of Battlefield, something that would likely be welcomed with open arms by the gaming and Star Wars community alike.

As it stands, the fate of Star Wars: First Strike and Version Two are completely undecided. Unless licensed to another developer, Star Wars: Battlefront 3 will never see the light of day.

What do you guys think of the footage? Does it look like something you would play?

League of Legends To Introduce ARAM Queue, Skin Price Changes

League of Legends is receiving a huge update with regards to how champion skins are sold, changing the cost of some of them (both up and down, but mostly reducing the prices) and making preparations for the new map, Howling Abyss. There are also a few incoming balance tweaks to help make every champion more viable.

First, let’s start with skin price changes. Skins are one of the main ways to show your love for a specific champion, and they usually cost 950 RP for normal skins or 1820 for legendary ones (with the exception of Pulsefire Ezreal, wich costs 3250, and a few older skins that cost either 390 or 520 RP). Only two of those (and both of them have in-game changing effects) cost 1350 RP. However, starting April 25, several skins will now have a different costs, decreasing and increasing some to the 520, 750 and 1350 benchmarks.

Here’s a breakdown of the new skin prices with what features you can expect for each skin:

390/520 RP skins

  • These are outdated tiers used for skins that only featured texture changes, a new splash image, and at times slight model changes.
  • 36 skins in the store at the 975 RP tier will have their prices lowered to 520 RP
  • No new skins will be created for these tiers, but existing skins in the store are eligible to be put on sale.
  • Example: Loch Ness Cho’Gath, Aviator Irelia

750 RP – New tier

  • Skins in the new 750 RP tier feature new texture and model work as well as a new splash image; and some skins in this tier will feature new animations.
  • 40 skins from the current 975 RP tier will have their prices lowered to 750 RP
  • We expect that 10-20% of skins in 2013 will be released at 750 RP, and they will be eligible to be put on sale.
  • Examples: Little Knight Amumu, Explorer Ezreal

975 RP

  • 975 RP skins feature a new model, textures and splash image; some skins in this tier will feature new animations, visual effects and sounds where appropriate for the theme of the skin.
  • We expect that 50-75% of skins released in 2013 will be 975 RP, and they are eligible to be put on sale.
  • Examples: Haunted Maokai, Jade Dragon Wukong

1350 RP

  • Skins in the 1350 RP tier will feature a new model, textures, splash image, visual effects and sounds. In some cases, these skins will also have processed voice overs.
  • This tier is intended for skins that go above and beyond the quality of 975 RP skins but don’t quite reach legendary status.
  • 3 skins from the current 1820 Legendary tier will have their prices lowered to 1350 RP
  • 18 skins from the current 975 RP tier will be moved to the 1350 RP tier
  • We expect that 7-15% of skins released in 2013 will be 1350 RP, and they are eligible to be put on sale
  • Examples: Blackthorn Morgana, Arcade Sona

1820 RP – Legendary skins

  • A legendary skin completely changes the look and feel of a champion.
  • These skins feature a new model, textures and splash image as well as completely new animations, visuals, voice over and sounds.
  • We expect that 6-10% of skins released in 2013 will be Legendaries, and they will not be put on sale.
  • Examples: Battlecast Prime Cho’Gath, Brolaf

3250 RP – Ultimate skins

  • An ultimate skin is a complete reimagining of a champion that includes an evolving model and additional features and bonuses, such as summoner icons.
  • 3250 RP skins feature a new model that evolves into different forms, textures, splash image, animations, visuals, voice over and sounds, as well as additional content.
  • We expect that 2-4% of skins released in 2013 will be Ultimates. They may have initial promotions or discounts, but will not be put on sale.
  • Examples: Pulsefire Ezreal

You can find the full list of price reductions here, or use this image to see the changes visually instead of reading the names.

Everyone loves the custom game All Random All Mid (even pro players love it, two teams played ARAM in the finals of a MLG tournament). That’s why League of Legends is finally receiving an ARAM queue including the new map Howling Abyss!

The queue is still being tested on the PBE servers, but it’s probable that with all that’s going on in the Freljord at the moment (recent Trundle & Sejuani visual updates, Lissandra the new champion who is from Freljord, Quinn’s journey through these lands, Anivia & Volibear’s upcoming skins) this will be one feature to be soon implemented. There’s also a new item named Poro Snax, which you can give to the lovely neutral creatures that live in the Howling Abyss.

While the random element is a really fun part of Howling Abyss, we also understand there are times you simply don’t want to play a particular champion. That’s why we created the reroll feature specifically for this queue. When you’re really not in the mood to play your particular champion on Murder Bridge, you can reroll and get a different random character instead.

Here’s how it works. As you play matchmade games on Howling Abyss, win or lose, you’ll earn points you can save up to purchase a reroll in champion select. You’ll earn a base number of points every match, along with some bonus points based on the number of champions you own. While there is a cap on the number of points you can store up, you’ll be able to reroll multiple times in a single champion select if you’ve got the points.

And don’t worry about wasting your hard-earned points on queue dodgers. If someone leaves your match at champion select, everyone in the game gets a refund except the player who dodged.

7pQtYSL
ARAM queue is currently in preparation!

As a last thing, let’s remember that what’s most important in a game where there are over a hundred different champions to use, balancing is tremendously important, especially when there are different game modes across League of Legends. That’s why someone at Riot Games has recently told a forum member about what’s being planned. One of those changes is limiting the total amount of potions a player can have at any time during the game, which will give less sustain than what it was meant to give, bringing back champions like Irelia, who were countered by heavy use of potions.

At the moment, we are planning to limit the maximum number of health potions you can hold at any time to five. This change was intended to combat super high sustain starts, where champions (particularly those going top and mid lane) would buy as many health potions as possible (and a ward or two) in order to sustain in lane forever. The problem is that this really destroys any incentives players have to interact. Resourceless champions in particular benefited from these starts and, for champions with mana pools, we’ve actually seen that some literally do not have enough mana to burn through that much sustained HP.

Riot games also plance to address a problem with different game modes. Champions that work well as intended in Summoner’s Rift just get stomped in maps like Twisted Treeline (3v3) or The Crystal Scar (Dominion), for example. That’s why they have decided to implement map-specific balance changes.

We’ve been well aware of how the Dominion and TT communities have felt left behind and ignored, but we wanted to make sure we had a plan that we were confident in and committed to before commenting, because we don’t want to make any more empty promises.

Dominion’s fun (it’s fast). So is Twisted Treeline. But they both share one key problem – League of Legends is competitively balanced for Classic gameplay on Summoner’s Rift. Our original goal was to create rulesets that would result in balanced experiences across all game modes with the same champion stats. We’ve experimented with itemization, game pacing, map features, and other design elements. While we’ve had limited success here, there’s still room for improvement, so we’re going to take the plunge: in the near future™, we’re going to be implementing map-specific balance changes for individual champions.

This is going to take a few patches to implement, but we’re actively working on the tech, and we’re already got a bunch of specific balance changes in mind that we’re iterating on. We’re sure there will be lots of questions regarding the initiative, so we’ll announce more specifics when the time comes. Remember that this is just the foundation for support – we’ve got some other tentative plans that we’re exploring to enhance both maps farther down the line!

What  do you think about the skin price changes. Will you get a skin before its price goes up, or will you buy one because its price is getting reduced? Excited (as I am) for the new ARAM queue that’s being prepared for release? Post your comments below!

Also, don’t forget to check out the latest update notes for patch 3.5, now live.

Dark Souls 2 Premier Gameplay Shows You New Ways To Die

Dark Souls 2 has finally received its first gameplay reveal and it does not disappoint.

After being said to allow more accessibility to the series, the latest gameplay has proved that players will once again be dying over and over, but this time, with some much improved visuals.

Check out the official gameplay reveal, courtesy of IGN:

You can also catch the latest trailer below:

[youtube id=”aE2W45PEzO4″ width=”618″ height=”378″]

Along with the gameplay reveal, it was announced that the Dark Souls 2 will indeed be server-based. This is much of a relief as the previous title was not based on this system, though the PS3 exclusive, Demon’s Souls, was. CVG had the chance to interview Producer Yui Tanimura who had this to say about the servers.

“In terms of network, we’ll have more follow-up information. Because the game is now server-based, we hope to implement new aspects into the game that are only possible because it is server-based. We want to utilise that as much as possible to deliver a new experience.”

Dark Souls 2 is set to release on current-gen consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360) along with the PC but with no plans of releasing on the PS4 or other next-gen systems. No release date has been set yet.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon DLC “Is an Honest, Bullsh*t Shooter With Mindless Fun,” Says Ubisoft

“It is the near future. The apocalypse had an apocalypse.”

This is the premise for Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, a “psychotic and crazy” piece of 1980’s sci-fi-inspired Far Cry 3 DLC that sets the story in a world under attack by a rogue cyborg army.

You are Rex Colt, a Mark IV Cyber Commando, who’s going to save the world.

[youtube id=”izcQj2GxHm8″ width=”618″ height=”378″]

Speaking to Polygon, creative director Dean Evans talked about the risky direction the Ubisoft team took with the upcoming DLC.

“We were given a brief to look at downloadable content or an expansion for Far Cry, and that was the most exciting thing because you don’t have to present back something normal, right?” Evans said. “It would have been really safe and traditional to say, ‘Let’s do some new weapons! Or a new map!’ but we wanted to take a risk.”

Evans spoke of the hilarity of going into the pitch presentation, which executive producer Dan Hay ended up in support of. “To be totally honest with you, there was a small part of me that thought, ‘They’ll never do this. They will never, ever go for this.'”

Evans believes, however, and hopes that fans understand, “the game is stupid, and it’s OK. We’re not trying to tap into these super deep emotions and make a ‘realistic shooter’. We’re embracing what we are, which is an honest, bullshit shooter with mindless fun. And we don’t see anything wrong with that.”

Far-Cry-3-Blood-Dragon-3

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon releases on the Xbox 360 and PC May 1, and a day earlier on the PlayStation 3, April 30.

Incoming Halo 4 Weapon Balance Update to Re-Tune Precision, Automatic and Vehicle Weapons

Halo 4 developers 343 Industries are in the midst of weapon balance changes that will affect all classes of weapons in the coming days.

The “ability to make weapon adjustments via backend tuning” introduced it Title Update 3 is allowing the team “make great progress” when it comes to weapon adjustments and testing, according to the Halo Bulletin.

It appears the team has a few ideas in mind that they’ve shared in the latest blog update.

Precision Weapon Balance

Our goal of the upcoming balance update is to create an even balance across all precision rifles (DMR, Battle Rifle, Carbine and LightRifle). Our latest tests have included (but are not limited to) rate of fire and damage tweaks to several weapons within this category. Additionally, it is important to create balance amongst all primary weapons, which leads into the next category.

Automatic Weapon Balance

An important part of overall balance is ensuring that each weapon excels within its intended role. As we move the dials to tweak some of the precision weapons, it demands that certain tweaks also be made to automatic weapons, which include the Assault Rifle, Suppressor and more. We are investigating modifying the rate of fire, accuracy and damage on these weapons.

Vehicle Weapon Balance

We have seen many community concerns that certain vehicles may be examples of sandbox elements that could be improved. We are currently looking at tuning some of the weapons that these vehicles have at their disposal in order to increase their usefulness and viability. We greatly value the teamwork (and fun) required in riding around in a Warthog with a buddy, and want to ensure that this and other vehicles have great draw and value.

The blog mentions that the team is “approaching weapon re-balancing very carefully, as each change that is checked requires vigorous testing to ensure that it benefits the entire sandbox, and that gameplay is improved on a global level across all of Halo 4’s maps, game modes and scenarios.”

As for timing, the blog notes, “we are well underway and will be bringing this update to Halo 4 Matchmaking as soon as it’s ready.”

What are your thoughts on the current state of weapon balance in Halo 4? What do you think needs tweaking?

Don’t forget, Halo 4 Castle DLC is now up for grabs on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Check out these map guide videos!

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 “Lag Comp” Explained [Update]

By now, you’ve probably heard of a little thing called “lag comp,” the embodiment of evil that is supposedly at the source of all your Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 woes, the sort of thing makes up the bulk of topics discussed in the comment section of articles like this.

Lag is certainly a part of Call of Duty, or any multiplayer game, for that matter. While its severity ranges from minor to desk flipping-ly awful, it’s here to stay and will always be a part of online gaming, for the time being.

There are, however, a lot of misconceptions surrounding what “lag comp” actually is, or how lag affects a game like Black Ops 2. Obviously, it’s super easy to get frustrated by it and to let it ruin your day, so perhaps getting it to know it better might alleviate some of the stress you may or may not be enduring.

Thankfully, YouTube personality Drift0r has a few eye-opening thoughts and findings to share that, while might not solve all or any of your problems, will at least give you a better picture of the sort of technical troubles video game developers like Treyarch have to deal with in order to keep a game like Black Ops 2 online.

Many of his findings are a result of experiments and tests, as well as personal exchanges with Treyarch developers. Side note: I can confirm his conversation with Treyach dev Alex Conserva as I too was present.

Check out the video below and let us if you picked up anything new or if it happened to change your perspective on lag and “lag comp” in Black Ops 2.

Update

Drift0r has published a follow up to his previous video, detailing what sort of things you can do to help deal with lag in Black Ops 2.

Black Ops 2 – No More Weapon DLC, Treyarch Confirms

While Black Ops 2 developers Treyarch originally labelled the Peacekeeper SMG Revolution DLC weapon a “one time offering,”  the studio has once again confirmed on twitter that forthcoming DLC would not introduce new weaponry.

Screen-Shot-2013-04-09-at-8.03.12-PM

Spotted by our friends over at CI, the statement follows in the wake of the recent reveal of Black Ops 2’s upcoming Uprising DLC, which will include four new multiplayer maps, a new zombies experience, but no new multiplayer weapon. Previous weapon DLC worked favorably in the eyes of the players, and so it’s understandable that it might have been expected for subsequent DLC.

Last year, Infinity Ward executive producer commented on the lack of weapon DLC for Modern Warfare 3, saying, “the main issue is RAM. All of the weapons, characters, models, textures, and geo have to live in RAM. There is only 512 [MB] on the consoles. The problem then is adding weapons adds memory, and there isn’t much or any left.”

It might be the case that Black Ops 2 initially had the room, but no longer does.

What do you think? Did weapon DLC work out in Revolution? Are you bummed Black Ops 2 won’t be getting any more multiplayer weapons?

Upcoming League of Legends Patch 3.5 Balance Update

A new patch for League of Legends, which is basically a balance update from the last patch, is about to be applied to the League of Legends servers. However, since it’s a balance update patch, there’s no news about when Howling Abyss or Lissandra, the recently announced champion, will come out. Here are the changes for the upcoming patch, with explanations about why these changes were made.

Akali

As an assassin, Akali should be a champion with high risk and high reward. These changes increase her early game risk while retaining her later game potential.

  • Mark of the Assassin
    • Initial damage reduced to 35/55/75/95/115 from 45/70/95/120/145
    • Mark detonation damage Ability Power ratio increased to 0.5 from 0.4
  • Shadow Dance
    • Essence of Shadow charge rate increased to 35/25/15 seconds from 25/20/15

Corki

  • Missile Barrage
    • Now fires a Big One every 3rd missile instead of every 4th
    • Missile charge rate reduced to 12/10/8 seconds from 12

Karma

These changes to Karma include several quality of life improvements and enhance her ability to generate multiple Mantras in well-executed fights.

  • Gathering Fire
    • Mantra cooldown reduction increased to 2 seconds at all levels from 1/1.5/2
  • Inner Flame
    • The detonation area now occurs at the actual point of missile impact instead of at the center of the initial target that is hit
  • Focused Resolve
    • Mana cost reduced to 70/75/80/85/90 from 70/80/90/100/110
    • Now applies Gathering Fire’s effect on each instance of damage dealt instead of only once on initial application, but now deals damage 3 times over the duration instead of 6
  • Inspire
    • Movement Speed duration increased to 1.5 seconds from 1.25
    • Fixed a bug where the tooltip stated the shield was 80/115/150/185/220 instead of its actual value of 80/120/160/200/240
    • Mantra Bonus – Defiance
      • Movement Speed bonus is now always 60% instead of 20/30/40/50/60% (based on Inspire’s current rank)
      • Ally shield / haste range increased to 700 from 600

Kayle

Previous to these changes, Kayle’s support spells could often be cast completely off-screen from her opponents. With these reduced ranges, it should be easier for opponents to anticipate her presence in fights.

  • Divine Blessing
    • Cast range reduced to 900 from 1000
  • Intervention
    • Cast range reduced to 900 from 1200

Lux

On top of her long range and wide array of defensive utility, Lux was also among the fastest ranged champions in the game. These changes force Lux to be more mindful of her timing and positioning as opponents now have more opportunities to capitalize on her mistakes.

  • Base Movement Speed reduced to 330 from 340
  • Final Spark
    • Cooldown increased to 80/65/50 seconds from 80/60/40

Morgana

  • Dark Binding
    • Mana cost reduced to 50/60/70/80/90 from 60/75/90/105/120
  • Soul Shackles
    • Mana cost reduced to 100 at all ranks from 100/150/200

Nami

  • Tidal Wave
    • Range increased to 2750 from 2500
    • Cooldown reduced to 120/110/100 seconds from 140/120/100
    • Mana cost reduced to 100 at all ranks from 100/150/200

Nautilus

  • Base Armor increased to 19 from 15
  • Titan’s Wrath
    • Cooldown reduced to 22/21/20/19/18 seconds from 26/24/22/20/18

Nunu

  • Absolute Zero
    • Cooldown reduced to 110/100/90 seconds from 150/120/90
    • Mana cost reduced to 100 from 150

Quinn

  • Harrier
    • Valor now marks targets slightly more frequently
    • Targets are now marked more immediately when Valor lands on the target
  • Vault
    • Quinn now lands closer to her target when using Vault from far away

Urgot

  • Acid Hunter / Noxian Corrosive Charge
    • Now displays Acid Hunter’s lock-on range while there is a visible, nearby enemy champion marked by Noxian Corrosive Charge

Volibear

Volibear was both an extremely powerful duelist as well as an almost guaranteed initiator for early skirmishes. In order to preserve his presence as a threatening fighter, these changes instead reduce Volibear’s ability to force engagements early on.

  • Rolling Thunder
    • Movement Speed bonus toward champions adjusted to 30/35/40/45/50% from 45% at all ranks

Items

  • Spirit of the Ancient Golem
    • New Recipe: Spirit Stone + Kindlegem + 450 gold = 2000 gold (total cost reduced from 2300 gold)
    • No longer grants +30 Armor
    • Now grants +10% Cooldown Reduction
  • Spirit of the Elder Lizard
    • New Recipe: Spirit Stone + Long Sword + Long Sword + 500 gold = 2000 gold (total cost reduced from 2300 gold)
    • Attack Damage reduced to 45 from 50
  • Seraph’s Embrace
    • Active Mana cost reduced to 20% current Mana from 25%
    • Active Shield adjusted to 20% of current Mana + 150 from 25% current Mana
  • Muramana
    • Toggle damage changed to physical from magic

The patch will be deployed April 10 and it will take approximately 6 hours for maintenance. As always, the League of Legends servers will be unavailable at this time (Ranked Queue will be disabled 00:30 PST while the servers will shutdown 2:00 PST) until the patch goes live.

On another note, since the LCS is about to enter mid-season, there will be All-Stars international matches to determine which region gets a third spot to go to the Season 3 World finals. Viewers are the ones who decide who gets the chance to go to China and fight for their countries by voting for their favourites. You can vote for both NA and EU teams while Asian teams will be determined by other ways.

Rainbow 6: Patriots – Ubisoft Toronto Has Completed Development on ‘MP Missions’

Rainbow 6: Patriots may still be a ways out with little to no news to go by these days, but today, we learn that at least a portion of the game is complete.

According to VG247, a multiplayer component of the title, in development at the Ubisoft Toronto studios, has been all wrapped up.

Studio head Jade Raymond told the site that the Toronto team has finished working on its portion of Rainbow 6: Patriots, which has been reported to be working on “MP missions” for the title while Ubisoft Montreal would handle the single player campaign.

We reckon that by “MP missions,” the source is referring to co-operative missions agains AI-controlled opponents. It would seem odd that a fully-featured competitive multiplayer portion of a shooter like R6P would be completed so soon, especially in an age when FPS games are weighed heavily by their multiplayer components. At least, we hope a ton of care and effort is being put into R6P’s competitive MP, and we know you do too.

The studio is said to have roughly 200 members working on the title.

It was last reported that R6P would likely be headed to next-generation consoles some time this year, along with PC, as the team hopes to “surprise the industry.”
