Moga Pro Review – Taking the Console Controller Mobile

In recent years, significant strides have been made in cell phone graphics processing units (GPUs) thanks to the likes of Qualcomm, ARM, Samsung, and others. With the implementation of these GPUs in retail cell phones and tablets, there has been a considerable rise in not only the graphics department but the overall quality of mobile games as well. Some games make great use of the ‘touch only’ controls to provide a fun and intuitive experience for the player. Other games seemingly ignore the limitations of mobile controls and refuse to adapt the game in a way that wouldn’t be better without a controller. If only there was an accessory that would allow players to play these games the way the developers stubbornly intended….

Enter the Moga Pro Controller.

PowerA has introduced a new controller for those with Android devices (Gingerbread 2.3 or higher) to help remedy the situation. While it loses the portability of its predecessor, the MOGA Mobile Gaming System, it has picked up a comfortable form factor that should feel very familiar to anyone who has used an Xbox 360. Since there really isn’t any competition in this category of accessory, the Moga Pro is an easy recommendation. However, there are definitely some areas of concern that you should consider before throwing down your hard-earned $50 so easily.

Let’s begin with the packaging. Once you open the box, you’ll find the Moga Pro, a Micro-USB charging cable, a tablet stand, and some instructions on how to configure the device and download the Pivot app (more on that shortly). The tablet stand is a nice addition. Since the cradle built in the controller can’t hold a tablet, the stand allows you to set up your tablet in an upright position and play wirelessly.

Once I checked off the prerequisites for the setup, I secured my phone in the cradle built into the controller. The cradle securely holds your phone in place and unless you intend on flailing your arms violently, there will be no need to worry about the phone falling out. A nice design choice was how the cradle doesn’t protrude from the controller in the closed position. It helps keep the aesthetic that there is just one solid controller with no moving parts.

Powering on the device is handled along the trim below and between the two analog sticks. Sliding to the left turns on Mode A, which is for using the controller in conjunction with the Pivot app. Sliding to the right turns on Mode B, which enables HID mode and allows you to use the controller in some apps that don’t directly support it through the Pivot app (ex. emulators). Mode B generally requires you to manually assign buttons inside the app in order to use it. If you want the game to seamlessly recognize the controller without configuration, its going to need to be one of the 80+ titles currently supported inside the Pivot app. This includes popular titles such as Modern Combat: Zero Hour, Shadowgun: Deadzone, and Dead Trigger. Once you’ve downloaded the Pivot app and have charged the controller, you’re ready to begin the setup.

In order for the controller to be recognized by a game while in Mode A, the game must be launched from inside the Pivot app. Merely opening the game from the apps drawer will not work. Opening up the Pivot app will begin the initial setup. A separate setup is required to configure HID mode (Mode B), but it only adds on a few extra seconds to a relatively quick process.  Once the device was paired, I went through to see what games were natively supported. Though the list is relatively small, I have no doubt it will grow in the near future.

Since I had a few titles I knew were already supported, I went over to the ‘Play’ tab to try them out. Immediately I ran into an issue. The Pivot app prompted me with a message saying I already had titles supported and that I was good to go. However, Modern Combat: Zero Hour wasn’t being detected despite being on my phone. Here’s where the implementation of the proprietary Pivot app becomes a hassle. In order for Mode A to work with games, Moga Pro functionality must be built-in or patched into the game. Modern Combat: Zero Hour was the only title I purchased from Gameloft’s site directly and not on Google’s Play Store. The Gameloft edition didn’t prompt me to download the updated Moga Pro version, unlike Play Store apps which automatically notify the user whenever an update is available. After extensive searching, I couldn’t find the updated version on Gameloft’s site, so I took the hit and repurchased the game through the Play Store. If controller functionality was directly baked into the Android OS, this wouldn’t be as much of an issue.

Before I resolved that issue, I fired up Shadowgun: Deadzone to try out the controller. After figuring out the default control layout, I could tell the controller was fairly solid. The triggers and bumper buttons had a nice subtle resistance to them. Again, those coming from the Xbox 360 should feel right at home. Face buttons felt a bit stiff, but I think they can be worn in so they depress easier. Start and Select buttons are tiny to the point they could be qualified as slivers. Since they aren’t used too often, this flaw can be overlooked. An interesting difference between the Moga Pro and the 360 controller is the battery. The backplate is flat, as opposed to the bulky battery pack found on the 360 controller, and allows a player to extend their fingers without restriction. I found having this extra space to be quite comfortable. If you had any aspirations for using this in a fighting game, its worth mentioning that the 4-way D-Pad was extremely rigid in my use.

It’s clear the developers didn’t exactly have controllers in mind when they first built the game as there are no options to customize button layout or use the keyboard without having to use the touchscreen. Even navigating menus is a bit of a hassle. While in rare instances you can use the controller to navigate menus, in most instances you can’t do anything else without also using the touch screen. Shadowgun: Deadzone was strange in that I could pause the game, but the only way to resume the game was to hit the ‘Resume Game’ button on the touch screen. While this is by no means a deal-breaker, it isn’t exactly a seamless experience for the user and may throw off those who are accustomed to being able to do everything with the controller.

As for the game itself, Shadowgun: Deadzone is an online multiplayer third-person freemium shooter. Graphics are remiscent of the original Unreal Tournament, but with higher resolution textures and character models. Using a single thumb to juggle firing a gun, throwing grenades, dropping health packs, performing dodges, AND controlling the reticule is a bit of a pain. This seemed like a great title to try out the Moga Pro with and see if it made things easier. The Answer: an obvious yes. Analog sticks perform great and improved my control tremendously. However, there were only a couple areas where I noticed an improvement: using the sniper rifle and lining up headshots on stationary targets. Reason being is on a good day, the total population generally doesn’t exceed 800 players. Considering people all over the world play this game and it isn’t region locked, lag can rear its ugly head quite a bit. Most of the time you’re trying to figure out how far in front of the moving character to aim in order to register a hit. So in terms of head-on combat, I saw no improvement with the controller. However, enemies who were hugging walls or were otherwise stationary, I found myself able to lineup headshots much faster.

Next up was Another World. Since it’s not a multiplayer game, I won’t spend too much time discussing it. It’s a trial-and-error cinematic puzzle game from the hardcore 90’s where checkpoints were seldom and save files didn’t exist, only passcodes. Another World has moments that require very precise timing and using ‘touch only’ controls can prove to be frustrating when the game doesn’t pick up your swipe on the screen. Using the Moga Pro removes that frustrating element entirely.

Finally, there is Modern Combat: Zero Hour. For the uninitiated, the Modern Combat series is an unabashed Call of Duty clone designed primarily for the mobile market. After repurchasing the game, I booted it up in Pivot and gave it a go. Unlike Shadowgun’s connection issues which can sometimes negate the benefits of the Moga Pro, Modern Combat: Zero Hour is far more punishing to those without a controller. ADS helps significantly with bullet spread, but when using ‘touch only’ controls, its toggled on/off as opposed to pressing and releasing the Left Trigger on the controller. Grenades, ADS, Sprint, Reload, and Fire are all handled by your right thumb when playing ‘touch only’. As you can imagine, those with controllers have a distinct advantage. For a test, I played a round with ‘touch only’ and a later round with the Moga Pro. Here are the results:

Touch Only

Moga Pro

Screenshot_2013-05-10-10-30-02

The transition to the controller felt seamless once I activated Y-Axis invert and adjusted my sensitivity. As you can see above, my score was tripled in the game with the Moga Pro. Being able to devote in-game actions to 4 fingers instead of just 2 thumbs helps tremendously. Everything from using the knife to reacquiring enemies that run past you are all easier thanks to the Moga Pro.

If you already have an Android phone with a fairly big screen and want a portable gaming option, the Moga Pro is a pretty good solution. While cell phone gaming may not pack the same punch as the PS Vita or the 3DS, it is definitely more cost effective. The controller itself is $50, with most games either being freemium or never exceeding $7. The form factor is a little too big for pockets, but would be great for those who travel. If you’re looking to get your console fix while on the go, the Moga Pro might be something to consider.

Pros

  • Improves aiming and timing tremendously
  • Fairly good build quality with a comfy design reminiscent of the X360 controller
  • First time setup is quick and easy
  • HID Mode allows controller to be used with some apps not supported in Pivot App
  • Form factor is good for traveling passengers

Cons

  • Almost no customizable control and layout options
  • Pivot app (Mode A) only supports 80+ games right now
  • D-Pad is too stiff
  • Support for Mode A must be built or patched into game. May result in having to repurchase games.
  • Form factor isn’t good for pocketability

Battlefield 4 Survey Contents Revealed – More on BF4 Multiplayer

A few weeks ago, we reported on a Battlefield 4 survey put into circulation by Electronic Arts that suggested a number of possibilities for the title like naval warfare, a dino-survival mode, dynamic environments, new weapons and classes, and much more. You can check out our earlier report in full right here.

While we received confirmation from EA that the survey is official, many of us have yet to see its actual contents. Luckily, MP1st reader Rubén Santana brought to our attention some images of the survey, originally posted by reddit user BattlefieldBastard, revealing it in full.

What was not mentioned earlier were some of the details of dynamic maps, like sounding vehicles alarms when bumping into them mistakenly, cutting power to buildings to envelop enemies in darkness, and seas that “swell” or become “stormy.” Mention was also made of “Battlepacks,” yielding possible rewards bonus XP boosts, knives, weapon attachments, soldier camos and weapon paints.

Again, EA has stated, “these are just some of the ideas included in our survey and [are] not indicative of anything we have in the works.” So you might want to keep that in mind before getting too excited.

Check out the survey and let us know which parts you hope become a reality in Battlefield 4 releasing this Fall on the Xbox 360, next Xbox, PS3, PS4 and PC.

No Multiplayer Mode in Wolfenstein: The New Order

Bethesda and MachineGames recently announced that Wolfenstein: The New Order will not have multiplayer component.

The game’s creative director, Jens Matthies, told GameSpot that the new Wolfenstein will consist of only a single player campaign, and will not include mutliplayer.

“It’s such a huge part of video game legacy. If there’s a video game museum, Wolfenstein is in the first room. It’s the start of the wave that shaped the world of gaming.”

“On a personal level, I played this when I was younger and it was mind-blowing,” Matthies added. “I never then of course dreamed that I was going to be working with it. It’s both an honor and a legacy.”

This, of course, means that unless a co-op mode is announced or multiplayer is back on the table, the title’s coverage on MP1st will be limited.

Gears of War: Judgment’s Next DLC Map Is Free and Arrives Mid-May

Incoming DLC to Epic and People Can Fly’s Gears of War: Judgment is hitting the Xbox 360 mid-may, is completely free, and is sponsored by men’s magazine, Maxim.

You’ll be able to download a brand new multiplayer map for GOW:J’s OverRun multiplayer mode called “Dreadnought” this May 15.

In this map, the action takes place on the CNV Pomeroy, a naval vessel used to transport captured Locust Berserkers.

“Little did they know that the Locust had waterborne beasts from the underground rivers of the Hollow, or that the Locust soldiers would use them so relentlessly to rescue the captured Berserkers,” reads the map’s description. “The Pomeroy was corralled into a narrow channel and forced ashore, where the Locust sent a mass of troops to assault and overwhelm the beached vessel.”

Maxim also presented GOW:J’s first DLC map, Haven, back in March.

Thanks, GameSpot.

New Watch Dogs Multiplayer Details – “Seamlessly” Overlaps With Single Player, Elements of Player Invasion

In a recent PlayStation Blog update, Sony listed seven things you need to know about Ubisoft’s upcoming open-world title, Watch_Dogs.

As it so happens, one of these seven items talks about the game’s multiplayer, set in the streets of Chicago, and how it will “seamlessly overlap” with Watch_Dogs’s single player experience.

Watch_Dogs will feature a full-blown multiplayer mode set in the mean streets of Chicago, though final details are still under lock and key. More intriguing is that multiplayer and single-player will “seamlessly” overlap, an effort by Ubisoft to demolish the wall that has divided single-player gaming and multiplayer for decades. This interconnectivity will extend to a companion experience on mobile devices, though details remain scarce.

Both in-game and in general, Watch_Dogs seems to be all about interconnectivity, as Ubisoft has stated that they intend to create an experience that will “revolutionize the way players interact with each other.”

In addition, Joystiq reported that Watch_Dogs will feature elements of ‘player invasion’ as a form of multiplayer.

During a recent press event, Ubisoft Montreal Senior Producer Dominic Guay said that the team wants to “to start breaching the wall in action-adventure between single- and multiplayer.” He pointed to the conclusion of the game’s E3 2012 demonstration where another player hacked into the protagonist’s cell phone to plant a virus, and then to Sony’s PlayStation 4 unveiling where the game showcased a player being watched by someone who had hacked local security cameras.

Lastly, he mentioned a mobile companion app would allow users to interact with console players through their smart phone.

Check out some more Watch_Dogs open-world gameplay courtesy of RajmanGamingHD.

Watch_Dogs hits current- and next-gen consoles, as well as PC on November 19.

Rumor – Call of Duty: Ghosts Main Characters Teased in “Rarer” Pre-Order Poster

Images from an allegedly “rarer” Call of Duty: Ghosts pre-order poster possibly teases some of the main characters you’ll get to know, or play as, in the single player campaign of the game releasing this November 5 on current and next-gen platforms, as well as the PC.

Sent to the Call of Duty Wikia, Twitter user LiamFTWinter snapped these images of the poster (or posters?):

What do you guys think? Do these dudes look bad-ass enough to be the main protagonists of COD: Ghosts?

Also, don’t forget about the guy from the original poster as well. That makes possibly six members of this “Ghost” team.

Call of Duty: Ghosts gets its official gameplay unveiling during Microsofts Xbox presentation this May 21.

Battlefield 3 and Battlelog Outages a Result of ‘Activity Aimed at Overwhelming Game Servers’ [Updated]

The Battlelog, along with Battlefield 3‘s game servers, are currently experiencing issues resulting from what appears to be cyber attacks, as development studio DICE looks into possible solutions.

The team has announce via Twitter that “the current Battlefield 3 and Battelog outages are a result of activity that appears to be aimed at overwhelming our game servers.” They added, “we are working on a variety of solutions to address this problem and are focused on resolution as quickly as possible.”

According to official Battlelog forum threads on the matter, the outages appear to be affecting both PC and console game servers.

DICE has stated, “we will provide the most up to date information to the community on our various channels, including the Battlelog Twitter account. We are very disappointed by these activities and the impact they are having for all to enjoy BF3. Thank you for your patience!”

We’ll be sure to update this piece with any info regarding the outages.

Are any of you experiencing troubles?

Update 1

DICE writes that due to the recent outages, “the BF3 double XP event previously planned for May 9-13 will be held at a later date.”

Update 2

DICE is continues to struggle with denial-of-service attacks. The team writes in a Battlelog forum post:

“Despite our security measures, we have been working around the clock to mitigate the impact of an ongoing denial-of-service attack on our Battlefield 3 game infrastructure over the last several days. While the motives are unclear, the focus of the attack has been interference with network communications preventing access to multiplayer gameplay. At this point, no user data is involved. We share your frustration about the impact this has had to our service and the ability for many of you to play Battlefield 3. We are working tirelessly to mitigate the problem.”

“As a part of our efforts to resolve these issues, we’ve conducted rolling restarts of Battlefield infrastructure servers to apply some updates. Thank you for your patience and support while we work to get everyone back and playing Battlefield 3 as soon as possible. More updates to come.”

COD: Ghosts To Be Supported by ‘Largest Marketing Plan in Brand’s History,’ Call of Duty No. 2 Brand in NA + EU

Activision has announced the Call of Duty franchise as the number two best selling franchise in North America and Europe combined during Q1 of FY ’13, coming in only second to Activision’s Skylanders brand.

Similarly, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was the second best selling game in NA and EU combined during the same quarter.

Looking forward towards the release of Call of Duty: Ghosts this Fall, developed by Infinity Ward, creators of the Modern Warfare series, Chief Executive Officer, President and Director Robert Kotick said during a recent earnings call that the “next Call of Duty game will face a more competitive environment than last year.” He added, “the competitive landscape will likely require us to further increase our sales and marketing investments for our 3 largest franchises, especially in the important holiday season.”

While we have concerns and face uncertainties, we believe our product pipeline for this year and the future is strong, our strategy is sound and our talent is second to none.”

Chief Financial Officer Dennis Durkin mentioned, “looking to the back half the year, we plan to continue building Call of Duty momentum with the release of Call of Duty: Ghosts on November 5 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Ghosts will also be available on next gen platforms and will be supported by one of the largest sales and marketing plans in the brand’s history.”

He also touched on a few of Black Ops 2’s other successes, including increased sales over 2011’s Modern Warfare 3 and the well-received, newly introduced microtransaction digital model.

“In Q1 at retail, Black Ops II sales were higher than Modern Warfare 3 sales in the prior year and online multi-player engagement set new records,” he said. “Q1 monthly active users for Black Ops II were up versus Modern Warfare 3 during the same period last year and total monthly active users for the franchise achieved a new Q1 high.”

“In addition to selling map packs, this quarter we introduced an all-new digital model selling micro DLC that lets players personalize, customize and expand their Call of Duty experience. Although still a small contributor to the franchise overall, we’re pleased with our results and most importantly, we’ve struck the right balance between providing items which have real value to our fans, but in no way compromise the core game play experience.”

Along with an aggressive marketing campaign, you can most likely expect the very same microtransaction digital model to sneak its way into Call of Duty: Ghosts next Fall.

Call of Duty: Ghosts, built on a brand new next-generation engine, releases on the PC, Xbox 360, next Xbox, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 this November 5. Look forward to an official gameplay reveal during Microsoft’s Xbox conference on May 21.

Battlefield 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20 Domain Names Registered by EA

EA is ‘preparing 4 battle’… for a long time.

Securing the future of the Battlefield series, EA has recently registered dot-com domains for Battlefield13.com all the way through to Battlefield20.com.

Up to this point, EA already owned Battlefield.com as well as Battlefield2.com to Battlefield9.com. Battlefield10.com to Battlefield12.com, however, are currently owned by parties not associated with EA

The recent domains were purchased on May 2 through the brand protection agency Corporation Service Company (CSC).

Does this mean that EA has plans for the Battlefield series all the way up to the 20th instalment? More than likely, they are simply protecting the these domains, should the series ever see such longevity.

That’s fine by me. I plan on playing Battlefield until the day I die!

In comparison, EA’s biggest competition, Activision, only owns ModernWarfare.com and ModernWarfare2.com to ModernWarfare7.

Looking to the near future, Battlefield 4 is planned for a fall release on the PC as well as current and next-gen platforms.

EA Won’t Pay To Depict Real Weapons In Video Games Anymore

EA no longer wants to pay for the rights to depict real weaponry in games like Battlefield or Medal of Honor.

Reuters reports that following recent events like the Newton school shooting, as well considering some of the heat that company took when Medal of Honor: Warfighter’s website provided links to real world weapons and tactical gear manufacturers, EA has decided that they will no longer pay for the rights to use real weapons in its video games.

Thing is, EA will still use them anyways.

EA has stated that though they will not pay to depict these weapons in-game, they do intend use their likeness regardless and even use similar names.

EA told Reuters that they believe they have a constitutional right under the tenets of free speech to use trademarks without permission. “We’re telling a story and we have a point of view,” said EA’s President of Labels Frank Gibeau. “A book doesn’t pay for saying the word ‘Colt,’ for example.”

What do you think about EA’s new approach to depicting real weapons in-game?

In related news, we recently learned that the Medal of Honor franchise is still a part of EA’s considerations for for their fiscal year 2013 plan, despite poor Warfighter sales and reception.
