EA Will Unveil New Next-Gen Games From DICE, EA Sports and BioWare at E3 2013

At this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo held in Los Angeles, California, publisher Electronic Arts will unveil new next-gen games from developers DICE, EA Sports and BioWare.

President of The EA Labels Frank Gibeau said in a recent earnings call that, despite currently being under a nondisclosure agreement with platform partners, EA is “planning a full reveal at E3, including more next-generation titles in development for fiscal ’14. This will include breakthroughs in graphics and gameplay for some of our biggest franchises, including Battlefield, FIFA, Madden, NBA Live and Need for Speed.”

On top of already having announced titles like Battlefield 4, FIFA 14 or Dragon Age 3, EA plans to “unveil new titles from EA SPORTS, BioWare and DICE, and a first look at some brand new games.”

Currently, Battlefield developers DICE have already shown us a bit of Battlefield 4, but have yet to announce any other titles that they might be working on. Rumors have it that Mirror’s Edge 2 may be in the works and is certainly something that many gamers would be happy to hear about. Or, perhaps we’ll be seeing another Battlefield spin-off or downloadable title like Battlefield: 1943?

DICE was also mentioned in the list of developers said to be working on EA’s upcoming Star Wars titles.

In addition, Gebeau mentioned that we’ll be hearing mor about Frostbite 3 and their “new sports engine” during their E3 investors breakfast in June.

What other titles do you think a development studio like DICE might have in the works?

Sledgehammer Games Still Working On Call of Duty, Just Not Call of Duty: Ghosts

Last week, we reported that Sledgehammer Games, who co-developed 2011’s Modern Warfare 3 along with Infinity Ward, announced that they will not be involved with the recently announced Call of Duty: Ghosts and that they are, instead, “heads down” in their “next project.”

Of course, no clues were given as to what the project might be, but a recent job listing suggests that it is, indeed, related to Call of Duty.

Apparently, Sledgehammer Games is “actively recruiting top talent for [their] Call of Duty development team.” The job description in question reads:

Sledgehammer Games is looking for talented Level Designers to create cutting edge level designs for our exciting title based on a successful Activision owned IP. We’re looking for top talent with strong experience in level design for AAA titles. If you’re interested in jumping in and working on a new project with some of the most talented developers in the industry, apply today!

With Infinity Ward hard at work on Call of Duty: Ghosts and Treyarch still tied up with Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, what could Sledgehammer Games possibly be up to? The fact that they are looking for talent with strong experience in level design for “AAA titles” suggests that whatever they might be working on is more than just mere Call of Duty game for mobile devices. Qualifications also indicate that the applicant must have a “serious passion for Shooters, Console or PC.

Could they have been handed the reigns of the Modern Warfare series? Are they possibly working on Modern Warfare 4, effectively adding a third developer to the Call of Duty development cycle? Or, is it something completely different?

What do you guys think?

Thanks, NowGamer.

What Would Make The Last of Us Multiplayer Actually Good? Some Ideas To Toss Around

While the single player will most likely be the reason to even play the game, we can’t ignore that The Last of Us will have multiplayer. To some that in itself is troubling. For a game that seems primarily focused on Single-player, multiplayer is a thought that is sitting in the back of many buyers’ heads. So, what exactly does Naughty Dog need to do to get our attention?

I remember when Uncharted 2 was announced: fans of the series went crazy until they heard that multiplayer was being added. This gave many fans doubt that Naughty Dog would be able to deliver a multiplayer experience, given that they have always been a SP-oriented developer ever since the PlayStation 1 generation. Of course, when the game came out, all doubts quickly turned into joy as many could agree that the multiplayer was well done and didn’t feel like a “tacked on ” feature as many thought it would be. This alone, for me, and given their track record of developing games, has given me high hopes as to what Naughty Dog will have in store for us in The Last of Us.

Now, none of the ideas below are confirmed – just some thoughts that could make the multiplayer unique.

No Uncharted Clone Please!

This is probably what everyone is expecting to see. From the looks of the gameplay, there’s enough in the single player to say that it plays completely different from Uncharted. However, trying to imagine it as a competitive multiplayer experience, the only thought that comes to mind is that it looks like a re-skinned Uncharted. This is clearly something we don’t want. If we wanted to play Uncharted we would play it. The gameplay will no doubt be similar, but it’s what the game modes, level designs, and the focus on how weapons will be handled that’ll help differentiate this MP from Uncharted.

Let us play as the Clickers

A friend of mine brought an interesting idea to me. What if The Last of Us multiplayer wasn’t about humans vs. humans? What if it was about Human vs. Clickers/Infected? This idea would bring the multiplayer closer to the single player experience, but of course, many would wonder how this would even work. Well, lets take a look at last week’s leak for the Team Boosters shall we?:

  • Team Bows: You and your teammates each start with a Bow and 5 arrows.
  • Team Rifles: You and your teammates each start with a Rifle and 5 bullets.
  • Team Shotguns: You and your teammates each start with a Shotgun and 5 shells.
  • Team Health Kits: You and your teammates each start with a Health Kit.
  • Team Revolvers: You and your teammates each start with a Revolver and 5 bullets.
  • Team 9mm’s: You and your teammates each start with a 9mm Pistol and 5 bullets.
  • Team Bombs: You and your teammates each start with a Bomb.
  • Team Smoke Bombs: You and your teammates each start with a Smoke Bomb.
  • Team Molotovs: You and your teammates each start with a Molotov.

If these are indeed true, doesn’t it seem rather odd that they would give us only 5 ammunition for any given weapon listed above? This suggest that the multiplayer will focus around stealth, preservation, and melee attacks. So, this gave me a thought that perhaps we do get to play as the Clickers, given the low amount of ammo that the humans get, meaning that clickers will have an equal chance of getting kills just as they do.

So, how would the clickers/infected play? Well it’s pretty simple: they are blind and the only way of detecting a human enemies is through sounds. Of course this wouldn’t be fair if the environments were invisible too. But, it’d make sense the only thing that clickers would not be able to see are the human players. The world itself may even look different through a clicker/infected player, but the layouts are still very recognizable. They would also have perks, such as one that allows them to explode upon death and infect nearby enemies, which would kill them, or boost the defense/attack of allies. Given that humans can heal with med kits, infected should be able to heal a portion of health through killing and devouring bodies.

Make the maps dark, with flash lights as the only source of light.

Don’t you just hate it when a game gives you the ability to use the flashlight in multiplayer and the only real use for it is to blind the enemy. Even in Battlefield 3 multiplayer, in the dark maps, flashlights weren’t really needed since everything could still be seen perfectly. Now imagine if it was this dark while playing The Last of Us multiplayer.

Game Modes

Destroy The Hive

Think of it like capture the point, except it’s just one capture. One team plays as the humans (the attackers) and the other as the Clickers/Infected (defenders). The goal of the attacker side is to destroy the defenders hive before the timer runs out. They would do this by setting designated areas from within the hive on fire.

Co-op/Hoard/Survival mode

I guess the only way to truly give us a multiplayer that isn’t going to feel dumb or out-of-place is to give us some sort survival mode. Survival modes are always fun in my opinion and giving us different levels that are diverse and such can make the mode even more fun. I can see it also playing out like Call of Duty’s Zombie Mode except in third person, which would be great. You and 2-3 other teammates fight back-to-back in a corner as swarms of infected break through your barricade. You’re ultimate goal is to survive as long as possible or escape to the designated area in time.

Co-op story

I believe this has already been confirmed to not be in the game, as in we won’t be able to play the standard single player with another partner, but what if they gave us other characters to follow for co-op? Like in Far Cry 3, give us a unique co-op story that’ll strike our hearts, or at least make us care about the characters. Everyone has always wanted them to expand on their SP portion with DLC, but of course it never happened with past Uncharted titles. It would be great to get some co-op episodic content.

Team-Death Match with a twist

No multiplayer would be complete without this mode and personally I wouldn’t mind if it was human vs. human with limited ammo and more emphasis on teamwork. What would make this even more great is that while the teams are battling it out, at a certain point in the match, infected AI invade the game, either forcing both teams to work together or using the opportunity to wipe the other team out.

Stock Mode

I don’t know about you guys, but I enjoy game modes from Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, and other titles that only give us a limited number of respawns. No doubt that this would help promote the idea that survival plays an important role in multiplayer.

Of course all this is just wishful thinking and most likely won’t happen in the actual game. I know you guys are looking forward to the single-player portion of the game, but besides from just saying the normal “Why do developers always have to add MP to a SP centered game,” why not give us you’re thoughts about what you would like to see in the multiplayer?

An updated version of Shutout will be placed into SWAT, Team Snipers and Infinity Slayer. Additionally, Simplex will be updated to the Team Throwdown version across all playlists with the exception of Action Sack, as Lightning Flag plays best on the prior version of Simplex due to lines of sight and other factors.”

Other matchmaking updates included the removal of the Grunt Birthday effect from Fiesta Classic in the Action Sack playlist. Parents/roommates/significant others will be happy about this one. Also, some of the Grifball setting have been updated to “reflect the correct community settings in regards to Base Player Damage, Grif Damage Resistance, Grif Shield Multiplier and Suicide Penalty.”

Medal of Honor Franchise Still Part of EA’s ‘Key Considerations for Fiscal Year 2013 Plan’

Last January, EA reported that 2012’s Medal of Honor sequel, Warfighter, was an “obvious miss” and would be taken out of the yearly rotation of shooters. According to chief operating officer Peter Moore, “the game was solid but the focus on combat authenticity did not resonate with consumers.”

Later, chief creative director Rich Hilleman commented on the possibility of it’s return, but only once EA could “get the right leadership aligned.”

According to recent EA Q4 FY ’13 reports, Medal of Honor is indeed still in EA’s “key considerations.”

Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, John Riccitello listed the franchise as a part of EA’s top three strategies: brands, platform, and talent.

He said, “by brands, we mean that we have the strongest brand portfolio in the game industry. We will project that portfolio across all relevant digital business models and channels while continuing to invest to grow the power of our brands. Leading the way for EA are blockbusters like Battlefield, Need for Speed, FIFA, Plants vs. Zombies, Bejeweled, Star Wars, Madden, The Sims, Dragon Age, SimCity, Mass Effect and Medal of Honor. We strongly believe this brand collection is unmatched by any competitor in our industry.”

Further on in the earnings call, he asked to turn to EA’s FY ’13 guidance: “The key considerations for our FY ’13 plan, as it came together these past months, are these: at the foundation is another year of blockbuster brands, Madden NFL, FIFA, SimCity, Medal of Honor, Dead Space and Need for Speed, as well as mobile hits like The Simpsons, Tapped Out and Bejeweled.”

Medal of Honor: Warfighter, a sequel to the 2010 Medal of Honor reboot and developed by Danger Close studios, was received poorly by critics and gamers alike, resulting in poor sales. As of yet, no mention has been made of another Medal of Honor title for the foreseeable future.

EA: “We Did What We Said We’d Do With Battlefield,” Premium Earns 3.5 Million Subscriptions

“There will be exciting new developments for the Battlefield brand as fiscal ’13 progresses,” said Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director John Riccitiello during an EA Q4 FY13 earnings call earlier today.

Looking back, he states, “we did what we said we’d do with Battlefield. Battlefield 3 took very significant share from the leading competitor, on its way to being one of the biggest selling titles in EA history.”

Peter Moore, Chief Operating Officer, added, “our Battlefield brand has been pushing the edge of online combat for 10 years, and along the way assembling a huge community with tremendous expectations. As we predicted, Battlefield 3 took market share last year, and more importantly, millions of players are still online, deeply engaged in this game.”

Recent reports indicate that Battlefield 3 Premium has earned over 3.5 million subscriptions to date, earning $120 million in revenue through the March quarter.

Looking forward, EA hopes to repeat their success and accomplish even more with Battlefield 4, releasing this fall, going head-to-head with Activision’s recently announced Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Detailed in a recent agreement with Disney, EA also hopes to produce strong results with games based in the Star Wars universe with developers like DICE (Battlefield) and Visceral Games (Dead Space).

UK Retailer ShopTo Will Not Stock Call of Duty: Ghosts Due to Conflict With Activision Policy

In the wake of Call of Duty: Ghosts’ recent announcement, a dispute between publisher Activision and UK online retailer ShopTo has resulted in the “e-tailer” announcing that they will not stock the upcoming Call of Duty title, or any Activision titles, for that matter.

The dispute arose over policies that Activision places on retailers wishing to stock their games. According to their contracts, Activision will not allow retailers or e-tailers to send Call of Duty titles to customers any sooner than a day before launch. With Call of Duty titles consitantly releasing on a Tuesday, retailers are to either ship on the Monday before, or the day of release. As it was put by ShopTo CEO Igor Cipolletta, this “effectively destroys an e-tailer’s pre-order campaign, as many deliveries inevitably arrive post-release date.”

“This has the undesired effect of previously loyal and satisfied customers thinking that, if we can’t ‘get it right’ for one of the biggest games of the year, why should they trust us with any future orders?” he says. “Their friends and acquaintances, by word of mouth and social media, (despite possibly not having ever ordered from us), would see us (and possibly e-tailers as a whole) as unreliable. This despite all the time and hard work my team and the myriad of other publishers put into other titles during the year.

“Of course this Activision policy is not for every title, but due to the volume and fever pitch Call of Duty seems to generate (both positive and negative), it causes the most damage to us.”

As it currently stands, Call of Duty: Ghosts, along with other upcoming Activision titles like Deadpool or Swap Force, is unavailable for preorder on ShopTo’s website, nor will it be, unless policies change. However, Acivision games that have already released are still on sale. Needless to say, this is a bold move on the retailers’ part, as they will certainly lose out to their competitors.

Understandably, Activision constantly deals with a growing frustration of broken street dates in the UK for popular games like Call of Duty, particularly from online retailers. Therefore, the company will most likely not budge when it comes to allowing an earlier date for dispatching. They also declined to comment on Eurogamer’s original report detailing the issue. However, Cipolletta says “we strongly believe they are not providing a level playing field between e-tailers and high street retailers, as the latter can have a midnight opening.”

He adds, “unfortunately, our experience with the Call Of Duty series in the past four years is that our campaigns have been extremely difficult to engender a supportable level of customer satisfaction and in regards to profit, a complete failure.

“Because of the highly competitive nature of the market we have been unable to make any profit. But added to this, what really hurt us (and therefore our customers’ satisfaction) was that we have been unable to guarantee 99 per cent delivery by the release date.

“We can normally achieve this with the support of other publishers, as they understand and appreciate that Royal Mail takes 1-3 days to deliver 1st Class to our UK mainland customers.

“Our wholesale unit price, added to the fact that the game has a worldwide Tuesday release date, means the processing and shipping requirements of this stock does not accommodate an e-tailers needs. With the requirement to pay staffing costs over the weekend, this would destroy any profit, as we cannot increase our selling price as we risk having zero orders. Essentially, if we receive stock late on a Friday, the processing time we have is halved and our processing costs double.”

In closing, Cipolletta compares the situation to other publishers, stating, “we have seen this year that Disney has listened to retailers regarding the release date for Disney Infinity. I really don’t see why with Activision we can’t have Friday release like any other triple-A title such as FIFA, Battlefield, Injustice, Dishonoured, Far Cry 3 and more.”

Call of Duty: Ghosts launches on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next-gen consoles on November 5.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist To Deliver an “Intelligent Experience” With Spies vs. Mercs

Get the full run down on Spies vs. Mercs, Splinter Cell: Blacklist’s take on the classic, yet very exciting multiplayer mode that pits stealthy and highly agile spies against mercenaries who carry a ton of fire power and a number of nifty gadgets.

The game mode got its first debut trailer last week, wich you can check out right here, but today, we get a look at some more in-game action, along with commentary from the developers over at Ubisoft.

[youtube id=”QDwW0zGthxA” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Over on the PlayStation Blog, Ubisoft community manager Zack Cooper answered a few fan questions about Spies vs. Mercs, getting down to the nitty gritty and detailing some of the different modes, gadgets, and customization options. We’ve selected some of the most important questions and answers. There’s a lot to learn, so read on:

Question: So we are getting the old maps back?

Answer: you’ll definitely be seeing some inspiration from some fan favourites in there!

Question: What can you tell us about the games networking? Is it going to use player to player or dedicated services? A good connection system is so crutial for multiplayer.

Answer: Truthfully, I’m not even sure. We’ll probably be sharing that info shortly down the road.

Question:  Also, how will the PS3 version differ from the PC version, which should I pick-up? I assume they will be slightly different for each platform?

Answer: We have dedicated teams working on the both the console and the PC editions. The goal is to have each version identical to one another.

Question: Hey, game looks great. I noticed in the trailers the spies had some weird looking guns they never fired. Are these guns non lethal or do they shoot gadgets or are they actually guns?

Answer: Good eye! The guns are lethal… but they’re only available to the Spies in the BLACKLIST Spies vs. Mercs. The 4v4, highly customizable mode. While we have added lethality to the Spies… getting into an open firefight with a Merc is a very bad idea. You still need to be smart and pick your spots. …Mercs can take a lot more damage than the Spies – who don’t have access to the SAME weapons. There are also a bunch of really cool gadgets to play around with, too!

Question: What steps were took to ensure even balance on blacklist? I mean spies with lethal weapons is scary just saying that maybe it can work I hope so.

Answer: It definitely works. There have been COUNTLESS hours spent on balancing, alone. They’re still tweaking, as well, to make sure we get it just right!

Question: I saw in the video revealed that there’s a lot of spies and a lot of Mercs but what I want to know is can I play the classic 2 on 2 ?

Answer: Definitely!! It’s called CLASSIC SvM. It’s 2v2, and VERY similar to the vibe from Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory’s Spies vs. Mercs. In the video, we (re) introduced you to Gunther Galipot. He was the Creative Director on PT’s multiplayer, and was the man responsible for bringing the asymmetry between the Spies and the Mercs (3rd and 1st person perspectives). We’re bringing that classic feeling back in Blacklist… and we can’t wait for you to play it!

Question: Two questions. One: In Classic and Blacklist mode, what kind of radar will the Mercs have? In double agent if you were near a merc as a spy, they knew because of the heartbeat sensor. Can a merc walk right by you if you’re hiding and not know? Second question is, is there free motion? As in, can you hit Y to jump, or are you stuck on the ground unless a button prompt appears.

Answer: So ONE of the Passive Abilities for the Mercs is a motion detector. If there’s a Spy running around in your vicinity, you’ll see it come up as a red dot. As for the motion, we’ve brought the Active Sprint mechanic from the Single Player into Spies vs. Mercs. It obviously makes you louder, but makes it much easier for you to climb over obstacles, or up walls and into vents.

Question: How far will customization go? (just an example) That is tied together with the next question:

Answer: There is SO MUCH customization in BLACKLIST SvM… weapons, gadgets, vision modes, and armour parts. Breaking down the armour parts, there are gloves, boots, and torso abilities, which bring with them ACTIVE and PASSIVE special abilities. In all, it equates to more than 540 possible combinations.

Question: In classic mode if you are NOT moving and hiding behind a box, if a merc comes in the room to do a sweep, will their motion pick you up if they get close to you? =p Or can you remain undetected and let them pass by if they dont see you.

Answer: So the one thing we’ve got (that you hopefully picked up in the trailer) is called SHADOW BLEND. In CLASSIC, if a Spy is hiding in the shadow, he will basically become invisible. Obviously, the Merc’s flashlight can counter that… but it definitely adds some tension to both sides! As far as the motion detector… I’m checking my notes, which reveal: “Intermittent pulse detects fast enemy movement” Hope that helps!

Question: Sorry for all the questions zack, but will there be more game modes then the two ye have already mentioned , I know u can’t probably talk about them but can we expect other alternatives to the two you have mentioned ? Thanks.

Answer: MAAAAAAAAAYBE….

Question: Could you please tell us about the inventory system and gadgets available in Classic SvM? How many are we allowed to carry? What gadgets are there? Are there spy cams? Chaff/flash/smoke? Heartbeat detector? What vision modes do the Spies have? What about the Mercs? Is the Karambit in Classic mode?

Answer: Ahh… you want to get INTO IT, eh? OK… In CLASSIC… Spies get NVG (Night Vision Goggles) + 2 Gadgets. Mercs get their Flashlight and 2 Gadgets. In BLACKLIST… there are 3 vision modes for each the Spy and the Merc to choose from (they’re different from each other), and there are 5 gadgets that you can choose from (but the number is determined by your armour parts, I believe)

Question: So for example is there a big difference between low level and high level player. When low level player has bacis gear, high level player has more extensive amount of gear unlocked. So my question is: Does high level player is superior to low level in terms of unlocked gear? Or is that depends how skilled player you are?

Answer: Smarts and skill are the two biggest factors, and will always trump a loadout, no matter how much you’ve spent to unlock gadgets. You can unlock them in any order… or simply use the presets that we’ve set out for you. Those presets are:

SPY:

Intel Scout – you can reveal and track enemies for your team
Saboteur – Destroy any gadget and neutralize enemy abilities
Predator – Use optic camo + stun crossbow

MERC:

Disruptor – Disrupt enemy electronics
Hunter – Has a wicked awesome drone to tag or eliminate enemy Spies
PeaceMaker – has an adrenaline shot that basically turns him into a tank (moves faster, can take more damage, heightened field of view… CRAZY)

Question: Will the maps in ‘classic’ mode and ‘blacklist’ mode be the same environments but smaller or completely unique maps for each mode due to the addition of more players in ‘blacklist’ mode?

Answer: They’re the same environments, but lit differently… CLASSIC *very much* pushes the light and shadow… it brings the tension of cat & mouse/hide & seek with the darkness and the flashlight.

Question: What gadgets do the spies have to choose from in Classic? A variety, I’m sure, but will it be a cornucopia of grenades? Perhaps a terrific gaggle of tech gadgets?

Answer:

SPIES have:
Flashbang, Sticky Cam, Smoke Grenade, Sentinel (destroys enemy grenades and drones), EMP grenade

MERCS have:
Intel Device (reveals all enemies in range), Proxi Mine, Resupply pack (weapon + gadget ammo), Frag, VX Gas Grenade

Question: Also, how does the hacking work? Wireless? Or is it more classic?

Answer: There are zones for each hacking station… you need to get right up to the station to initiate the process, and then remain alive and in the zone for the hacking to continue. If the hacker dies, a teammate has X amount of time to get to the station to resume it. If they fail to do so, the transfer of data is reset.

Naughty Dog: The Last of Us Multiplayer Will Be “Very Fun!”

Naughty Dog has certainly kept the lid tight shut about the multiplayer portion to the PlayStation 3 exclsuive, The Last of Us. While last week’s leak possibly gave us some insight as to what to expect, Naughty Dog has stated that they’re still working on the multiplayer and that we can expect it to be fun.

When asked about when we would see the multiplayer portion of the title, a rep from Naughty Dog simply said,

We’re working on MP and focusing testing it a lot. It’s going to be very fun!

And for those who remember those extremely hard-to-earn trophies in past Uncharted games for the multiplayer, Naughty Dog has also said that they’ll discuss the DLC trophies later and will address the difficulty.

In the mean time, enjoy this new video that released today for the Last of Us, which goes into great detail about the infected of the game.

DICE and Visceral to Produce Star Wars Games in Disney and EA Agreement

Today, EA announced a multi-year exclusive licensing agreement with The Walt Disney Company to “develop and publish globally new games based on Star Wars characters and storylines.”

According to the press release, these games will span “all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres, while Disney will retain certain rights to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories.”

“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. “Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”

Yes. Star Wars + DICE, developers of the Battlefield franchise. You read that right. Battlefield: Star Wars, anyone? Of course, there is also the chance that either they or Visceral pick up the cancelled Star Wars: Battlefront III project, which would not be so bad either way.

The fact that these upcoming Star Wars games will span “the most popular game genres” means that we’ll more than likely be seeing a Star Wars FPS/shooter from at least one of these developers. “Oh, the possibilities,” said DICE General Manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson in a recent Tweet.

According to DICE’s Frostbite Technical Editor, the Star Wars games in development at DICE and Visceral will be built on the Frostbite 3 engine, the same engine powering the upcoming Battlefield 4.

Report – Next Xbox Will Let You Play Games Offline, Despite Rumors

Don’t worry. You’ll be able to play the single player campaigns of games like Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts on the next-generation Xbox offline, without an internet connection, according to recent reports. Crazy, right?

Despite recent rumors, arstechnica reports that the next Xbox will not require an internet connection to play games, or to even function with basic features like Blu-ray.

In an internal email sent to full-time Microsoft employees working on the next Xbox, codenamed “Durango,” it reads:

Durango is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today’s Internet. There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should ‘just work’ regardless of their current connection status. Those include, but are not limited to: playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single player game.

The letter also implies the legitimacy of other rumors stating that the next Xbox would feature an HDMI input to allow the connection of cable boxes in order to view live TV. Sources also claim that the next Xbox will provide TV listings and similar information.

The next Xbox is set to be officially unvealed on May 21, along with Activision and Infinity Ward’s first unveiling of Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Hopefully, many of you find yourselves relieved. We know how badly you want to play those single player games – with or without internet! Otherwise, why would you be here? *Wink, wink.*

In all seriousness, this is good (hopefully truthful) news. Keep your eyes peeled May 21.

Star Wars: Battlefront III – Over 1 Hour Of Gameplay of The Cancelled Starwars Title

While rumors have been speculating that the most recent Star War titles that have been cancelled (Battlefront III, 1313) are currently being picked up by other studios, nothing has been confirmed or announced yet since the departing of Lucas Arts.

Either way, these past days have certainly been interesting, as more and more gameplay footage has surfaced showing off what was Battlefront III.

Past To Present Online posted a video via twitch TV showing an hour of alpha footage, which was the stage that the game was cancelled in.

Here’s another video spotted by reddit users.

It’s no surprise to see these surfaced as Star Wars day was on May 4th. So what do you guys think? Should Disney revive the game?

Fuse Demo Incoming May 7 on XBL and PSN

Fuse, a third-person, co-op action shooter from Insomniac Games is out on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this May 28 (May 31 in Europe), but those eager will get a chance to test the game out before hand.

Hitting the Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlatStation Netwok on May 7, players will be able to sample the game by playing solo, 2-player split-screen, or with up-to four friends online as four elite operatives  – Dalton Brooks, Izzy Sinclair, Jacob Kimble and Naya Deveraux – each with their own unique gameplay experience and “xenotech” weapon.

CEA Ted Price writes, “Fuse takes four player co-op in a new direction with features you won’t find in other third person shooters: from LEAP where you can jump between each of the four unique agents at will to the experimental Xenotech weapons to the deep RPG-like character progression system. And by the way, all of these features rock for solo players as well.”

From what we’ve seen of the game so far, Fuse looks like a fun mix of nifty gameplay elements and pure action that could prove a worthy addition to your roster of co-op shooters.

Rumor – Alleged Battlefield 4 Survey Asks About DLC, Dinosaurs, Naval Combat, Map Remakes, and More [Updated]

An alleged Battlefield 4 survey circling the internet asks questions about DLC, dinosaurs, map remakes, dynamic environments, naval combat, new weapon classes, and Battlelog 2.0.

A user on NeoGAF recently detailed the survey, explaining how it asked users about some of the topics listed above. Allegedly, it asked about environments being made more dynamic, like being able to blow out the foundation of a dam to flood the battlefield, for example. Other questions hinted jet skis and gunboats, with regards to naval warfare. It also mentioned transferring over unlocks and rank from Battlefield 3.

Even more interestingly, there were a number of questions pertaining to DLC. Users were asked to rate possible DLC names that included “BF4: Recommisioned,” “BF4: Reenlisted,” “BF4: War Torn,” and “BF4: Reconstructed.”

Other DLC questions asked users how they felt about remaking maps like Oepration Metro or Caspian Border in the recently announced Frostbite 3 engine. Mention of DLC focused on naval warfare was made, with possible titles like “BF4: Naval Warfare,” “BF4: Naval Combat,” or “BF4: Steel Titans.” The user also noticed mention of dinosaurs and DLC, where questions asked how fans might feel about a co-op mode based on dino-survival using primitive weapons like the bow and arrow. Possible names included “BF4: BC,” “BF4: Primal Combat,” or “BF4: 21942” as well as others.

Though this particular NeoGAF user was unable to gather any screens of the survey, Electronic Arts has been known to pass surveys around gathering feedback from various fans of EA games.

Regardless, this info is still highly speculative and should not be taken as fact. They are, after all, only questions, though they do give you something to think about. We’ll be sure to update this story with any further information we may gather or if we spot the survey ourselves. Have any of you run across it?

Update

An EA representative told us that they do, in fact, conduct annual surveys about their games “that include topics that range from random ideas to specific themes to see what resonates.” He added, however, that “these are just some of the ideas included in our survey and not indicative of anything we have in the works.”

How do you guys feel about some of the stuff mentioned above? Naval Warfare? More dynamic environments? Transferring rank and unlock? Dinosaurs?

Call of Duty: Ghosts – What The Heck Is It?

Chances are you’ve heard the news, the next Call of Duty will be out November 5th and it’s subtitled “Ghosts.” What none of us have heard though, is what exactly the game’s theme, setting, or basically anything is, other than these rumors. Being a longtime fan and follower of COD and it’s development, I feel like I can lend some insight into what the deal with Ghosts is.

Oh, and just a heads up, I’ve pretty much been spot on with every prediction I’ve ever made about COD because of how closely I pay attention to everything that circulates about their development. So yeah, I’m not just guessing here.

Setting: Post-global nuclear war

Activision/Infinity Ward have made it clear that Ghosts is a transition for the COD franchise away from what they’ve already done as far as story and setting are concerned. The one thing COD hasn’t really done is the “after war” story. I think, given the dark/mysterious tone of the marketing for Ghosts and “using non-futuristic weapons” leaks and rumors, we’re going to see a very underground, guerrilla, in the ruins-of-the urban-world-warfare style setting.

The fact that Ghosts will be running on a “totally new” engine also sends up some smoke signals that correlate to this theroy. With new engines come new tools which take time to learn. As we’ve seen in past titles like BF3 and Crysis 2, the first games running on a new engine are typically the trial run for the developers to figure out what they can and can’t do well with the new software. So it would make sense that IW is using weapons they know like the back of their hand. The setting just helps support that. More on how this translates to multiplayer in a bit.

Story: Meh, but lets talk about it anyway.

I’ve heard that some people actually buy COD for the single player campaign too. Honestly, I have never really been all that intrested in COD campaigns outside of COD4/WaW, and WaW only because of Kiefer Sutherland. So the fact that Ghosts will have a campaign doesn’t really interest me all that much.

But for the sake of covering everything, I expect the Ghosts campaign to be more of a Homefront style of storyline. The “other guys” have already taken over and now it’s time to reclaim our freedom. It migh also be “hey, so we just blew everyone up, lets fight amongst ourselves for power.” Either way, expect two (or a few) factions of soldiers/people/countries fighting to reclaim power in a chaotic and destoryed urban setting.

A lot of people have been pondering whether or not the character Ghost will be making a return in Ghosts. I doubt it highly. Like I said, Activision & IW are going for a new chapter in the COD saga and I doubt we’ll see any old characters coming back. Though it wouldn’t shock me, espeically given the annoucment teaser, if there’s a lot of allusioning and symbolism to past COD characters.

Multiplayer: Going oldschool?

As I mentioned in the bit about the setting for Ghosts, the fact that it’s running on a new engine (and on new hardware i.e., next gen consoles) is going to both limit and expand Ghosts’ development. On one hand, it’s (hopeful assumption here) a totally new engine, which means the devs haven’t been using it for a decade like they have with the current engine. This means getting the game to do X, Y, or Z might be more difficult initialy than it would be in the old engine. But on the other hand, maybe the new engine is built to do X, Y, or Z and the old engine wasn’t or the current gen consoles made it impossible.

Either way, Infinity Ward will be using Ghosts as a proving ground for what the new engine can do, which means they’ll be avoiding risks and massive inovation. I think we can expect to see something like COD4’s multiplayer, but with a similar style of killstreaks to Modern Warfare 3, though hopefully without the support strike package. All the weapons in the annoucement teaser were guns you can buy on store shelves right now (which was basically all the weaponry in COD4), so it wouldn’t shock me if franchise staples like the M16, AK-47, MP5 and others will make a comeback.

Personally, I’d really like to see something like Modern Warfare 2, but balanced and improved upon for Ghosts and I think the end product will in fact be something that reminds A LOT of players of MW2, if not in look or feel than in spirit.

Final Thoughts: Don’t screw up

My frustrations with Black Ops 2’s issue made me stop playing it and sell my Xbox. COD really hasn’t been fun for me since Black Ops 1, and even then it was really starting to bug me. Given how much more harshly each new COD title has been recived since MW2, I really don’t think IW has much room for error with Ghosts. Yes, regardless of how good it actually is, it’s going to sell like hot cakes. But the core fanbase that plays COD every day isn’t going to stick around for much longer if the franchise keeps going downhill or, at the very least, continues moving away from what made it great: solid gameplay and rewarding skill over luck.

All things considered, despite my lack of faith in IW as a developer and my growing dislike for what Activision has done with their franchises, I think Ghosts might turn out to be the COD we’ve been waiting for. With new engines come new challeneges and cosidering how big COD has gotten, taking risks, especially with new hardware coming out, is basically outlawed. Hopefully, that forces IW to simplify Ghosts and move away from the “hey, you threw a grenade, here’s a chopper gunner for you,” design mentality.

FINGERS CROSSED!

What do you guys think? Agree? What are your thoughts and predictions for Call of Duty: Ghosts?

Halo 4 Weapon Tuning Update Goes Live Across All Playlists This June

As you may know, developers 343 Industries have been rigorously testing, tweaking, and tuning weapons in the Halo 4 sandbox as they work through a series of phases which will eventually bring about a significant weapon-focused update this June.

According to the latest Halo Bulletin, the studio will be inviting a small group of community members to test out the latest tweaks and get a sneak peek at what’s in store for the next update.

Fans will be able to join in via a special live streaming event, giving all players a chance to catch a glimpse of the latest weapon updates before the new settings go live globally. A date and time has yet to be announced, but you’ll be able to catch all the action, including insight from 343 developers and gameplay from community members, on 343’s official TwitchTV page.

Additionally, you’ll be able to view a detailed list of final changes on the Halo Waypoint shortly before the event goes live. These changes, once solidified, will deploy across all Halo 4 playlists on Monday, June 3.

343 writes that onces these changes go live, they “estimate that [they] won’t be making adjustments for at least several weeks as [they] examine the results of how this update changes gameplay behavior, strategy, loadout selection and more.”

3-time Halo National Champion Dave “Walshy” Walsh stopped by the studio last week to test out some of these updates. Here’s what he had to say:

343: Hey, Walshy! What were your first impressions with the new weapon tuning? Did anything immediately stand out as different, enjoyable, confusing, etc.?

Walshy: New weapon tuning felt much better! Three features stood out the most to me:

  • The Battle Rifle being a 4-shot makes it a force to be reckoned with, no longer is the DMR the go-to choice for top players.
  • Decreased magnetism on automatics definitely adds more skill to those short-range fights.
  • The LightRifle’s increased rate of fire while zoomed in will possibly make it the best long-range starting weapon in the game.

343: I’ve certainly seen quite a bit more LightRifle in our playtests. The slightly increased ROF when zoomed makes it even deadlier at range. So tell me – was the 4-shot BR as crispy as you expected?

Walshy: Cookie Crisp crispy! I might have to start doing the wolf howl after each kill! On a slightly more serious note, the 4-shot kills give the game the faster kill time that I loved from previous Halo games.

343: We played a 1 vs. 1 on Haven with Assault Rifles only, and I think we both agreed that the new tuning made it quite interesting and different. How did you feel about the reduced auto-aim on the automatics?

Walshy: First off, you and I both agree that I am the best 1 vs. 1 Haven ARs only player in the world. Secondly, I think this will only result in even more dominance from me in 1 vs. 1 Haven ARs! I think this change accounts for the few automatics in the top level of play to take slightly more skill to use. However, this change primarily affects the casual level of play, which is the majority of Halo players – overall, I think everyone will be very happy with this change.

343: How do you think these tuning updates will affect gameplay, both Matchmaking and tournament play?

Walshy: Both tournament and Matchmaking play will see more variance with starting weapons. Biggest difference in my opinion will be in the short and long-range game since the DMR currently is the go-to weapon for almost every situation. With the updates to the BR and LR, we now have weapons that, on paper, are superior to the DMR. I’m excited for this change and am excited to see how it changes the game!

Looking forward to the upcoming Halo 4 weapon tweaks? We’ll get the juicy details up as soon as they become available.

Thar Be Dragons! Borderlands 2 Lead Writer Accidentally Leaks Fourth DLC Name [Updated – Out This June]

Anthony Burch, lead writer of Borderlands 2 has recently leaked details of the fourth campaign DLC, expected to arrive sometime before the end of June, a couple of  hours ago on twitter. Though since removed, the tweet contained an image of the new campaign.

Which, luckily for you, we managed to snag a pic of the accidental leak that you can see below:

exRgwCG

So there you have it folks, the fourth campaign DLC for Borderlands 2 will indeed be titled “Tiny Tina’s Assault On Dragon Keep.” It looks like it will give us a good reason as to why the mysterious ‘Thar Be Dragon’s‘ map, that can be seen near the chest in Captain Flynt’s ship, was included into the game.

Update

Gearbox has confirmed that Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep DLC will be available on June 25th for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC users for $9.99 or 800 MS points, free for season pass holders.

According to IGN, “the add-on revolves around a game of Bunkers & Badasses — Pandora’s version of Dungeons & Dragons — led by Tiny Tina.” You’ll experience the game as Tina narrates the action. She’s even able to tweak parameters like boss attributes, location details, characters and more on the fly.

Now that we know the title of the upcoming fourth campaign DLC for Borderlands 2, what do you hope it might include? Let us know in the comment section below!
