PS5 and Xbox Series X Scalpers Earned as Much as $19 Million During Q4 2020

It’s hard to imagine a time when many gamers were willing to fork off tons of money just to be the first to get a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, but now it’s apparent that many did just that and even paid double the price — leading to a lot of scalpers earning as much as $19 Million during the Q4 2020 according to an analysis by Dev.

As tweeted by Daniel Ahmad, scalpers earned a profit of $19 Million for selling PS5’s on Ebay, while those who sold Xbox Series X|S consoles earned $10 Million in profit.

Essentially, it comes down to demand and profit — where people who want to be the first to get the consoles will pay any price to those hoarding and scalping the first batches they can get their hands on. As the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S pre-orders were mostly restricted to online purchases during the pandemic which made slots to get these limited, a lot of scalpers took advantage of the situation and sold their units for double the normal price on sites like Ebay. Depending on which version — PS5 units were sold over a $1,000 each while Xbox Series X went for as high as $865. In the end, it becomes a shady business practice and while Sony and Microsoft have promised to produce more units by next year — people who couldn’t wait and gave in to these scalpers just gave them a $19 Million payday.

Cyberpunk 2077 Developers Apologize for PS4 and Xbox One Performance Issues, Promising Fixes Soon

It’s been less than a week since Cyberpunk 2077 finally released worldwide, and things haven’t been a smooth ride in Night City for some players as the game has experiences some bugs and performance issues — especially for the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. After observing the matter and hearing the complaints of many, CD Projekt Red has owned up to these faults and apologized — promising to fix these issues or outright refund those who are unhappy with their experiences.

Through their official social media channels, Team Cyberpunk has released an official statement addressed to all the gamers and fans who bought the game.

Here’s the entire transcript of the statement in full:

Dear gamers,

First of all, we would like to start by apologizing to you for not showing the game on base last-gen consoles before it premiered and, in consequence, not allowing you to make a more informed decision about your purchase. We should have paid more attention to making it play better on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Second, we will fix bugs and crashes, and improve the overall experience. The first round of updates has just been released and the next one is coming within the next seven days. Expect more, as we will update frequently whenever new improvements are ready. After the holidays, we’ll continue working—we’ll release two large patches starting with Patch #1 in January. This will be followed by Patch #2 in February. Together these should fix the most prominent problems gamers are facing on last-gen consoles. We will be informing you about the contents of each patch ahead of their release. They won’t make the game on last-gen look like it’s running on a high-spec PC or next-gen console, but it will be closer to that experience than it is now.

Finally, we would always like everyone who buys our games to be satisfied with their purchase. We would appreciate it if you would give us a chance, but if you are not pleased with the game on your console and don’t want to wait for updates, you can opt to refund your copy. For copies purchased digitally, please use the refund system of PlayStation Network or Xbox respectively. For boxed versions, please first try to get a refund at the store where you bought the game. Should this not be possible, please contact us at helpmerefund@cdprojektred.com and we will do our best to help you. Starting from today, you can contact us for a week up until December 21, 2020.

Humbly
Marcin Iwinski, Adam Kicinski, Adam Badowski, Michał Nowakowski, Piotr Nielubowicz, Piotr Karwowski

P.S. PC gamers will also be getting regular updates and fixes improving the game.

For more news and features on Cyberpunk 2077, be sure to visit our archives here on SP1st.

Cyberpunk 2077 is now available for PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC, and will be coming soon for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

EA Overtakes Take-Two in Codemasters Acquisition

Following yesterday’s news that EA is seeking to buy Codemasters after Take-Two Interactive’s initial announcement, EA has announced that it has reached an agreement with the Board of Codemasters to aqcuire the UK-based studio.

In the announcement, it states that Codemasters’ shareholders will be entitled to receive 604 pence (approximately US$7.98*) in cash for each ordinary share of Codemasters with an implied enterprise value of $1.2 billion, with the acquisition expected to be completed in the first quarter of calendar 2021.

A “Strategic Rationale” has also been revealed as to why the partnership makes sense for both parties.

Strategic Rationale:

  • Electronic Arts believes the combination of EA and Codemasters will enable further growth and success for Codemasters and EA’s popular and innovative racing franchises.
  • Bringing together the combined expertise and talent from Codemasters’ critically-acclaimed sports and racing franchises Formula One, DiRT, DiRT Rally, Grid and Project Cars with EA’s global Need for Speed franchise, fan-favorite Real Racing mobile game and EA SPORTS brands will enable our teams to innovate further, and meaningfully increase the delivery of content and experiences to a growing, global audience for racing entertainment.
  • Codemasters’ deep creative talent which has produced high-quality racing games for many years, including the Formula One franchise that continues to deliver great entertainment for F1’s growing fan base.
  • EA believes it can help accelerate Codemasters’ performance by leveraging EA’s deep expertise in live services operations, game analytics and technology. In addition, EA’s central services teams across development technology, art & motion capture, quality verification, compliance, and localization will all be resources available to Codemasters.
  • EA’s global publishing, marketing and game development support capabilities will also strengthen Codemasters’ existing capabilities, expanding the addressable market for Codemasters’ franchises.
  • The combination of Codemasters and Electronic Arts will enable the development and delivery of a market-leading portfolio of creative and exciting racing games and content to more platforms and more players around the world.
  • The union also creates ongoing and expanded ways for players to engage with the combined portfolio of sports and racing games through EA’s industry-leading multi-platform subscription services.
  • Bringing together Codemasters and Electronic Arts also delivers compelling financial benefit to the combined group. The acquisition is expected to grow net bookings and underlying profitability.
  • Frank Sagnier, Chief Executive Officer of Codemasters, and Rashid Varachia, Chief Financial Officer of Codemasters, along with the senior executive management team of Codemasters intend to remain with Codemasters following completion of the acquisition and will continue to lead the Codemasters business within EA’s organization.

Does this mean Codemasters will be handling Need for Speed? Who knows, but we’re interested to know what the future holds.

Remnant From the Ashes Update 1.22 Released

While we’re technically not getting any new content for Remnant From the Ashes (at least not that we know of), Gunfire Games has released the Remnant From the Ashes update 1.22, and as mentioned above, players shouldn’t expect any new content.

Remnant From the Ashes Update 1.22 Patch Notes:

We’re pushing a patch for #PS4 that allows Remnant players in US & EU to play with Remnant players in Japan!

As far as we’re aware, that’s the only thing that got changed. We’re keeping an eye out on the community to see if anyone reports any changes from this update. And of course, if Gunfire Games releases official notes, we’ll update the post. In the meantime, if you spot any gameplay-related changes, or other tweaks, let us know what you find down in the comments below.

Hopefully, we get more Remnant From the Ashes content in 2021.

Report: EA Enters Bidding in Codemasters Take-Two Acquisition

Just last month, Take-Two Interactive shocked the gaming world when it announced its intention to acquire Codemasters, the studio behind the Dirt, Grid, F1 and other racing properties. It seems things aren’t going to go down swimmingly as Take-Two Interactive assumed, as publisher EA has reportedly threw their hat into the ring!

The report comes from Sky News, who mentions that EA has a potential “knockout bid” for Codesmasters that would trump the racing studio’s offer from Take-Two Interactive! The anonymous source states that EA is working with bank UBS on its own offer, with intent to buy being disclosed to the stock market on Monday morning.

No specific details regarding EA’s potential offer was disclosed, and it’s unclear whether Take-Two Interactive would counter EA’s offer if it indeed came to light. For reference, Take-Two’s offer  was as follows: The transaction values each Codemasters’ share at 485 pence ($6.39) and an implied equity value of approximately £759 million ($994 million).

We’ve contacted EA and Codesmasters to see if they have a statement regarding this and will update if we hear anything back.

Bear in mind tha this is still a rumor, so take everything with a grain of salt for now.

Black Ops Cold War SBMM Tested – Here’s What You Need to Know (Summary)

With last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, one of the biggest things to come out of the woodwork is none other than Skill Based Matchmaking (SBMM). While Activision and developers have remained quiet about it, the chatter surrounding it has seeped in into Black Ops Cold War. If you’re curiuous how Black Ops Cold War SBMM works, well, you’ve come to the right place.

YouTubers, Xclusive Ace, Drift0r, JGOD, and S0ur, collaborated to test how strict SBMM is in Black Ops Cold War, and for those who’re playing the game, I gather, you won’t really be surprised at the results. We’ve posted a summary of the findings, as well as the methodology on what steps each YouTuber took to come up with the data.

Methodology:

Testing Process
Make sure crossplay is ON
Test during peak play time (weekend) to maximize potential player pool
Stick to one game mode, solo play only (All recorded SPM data should be for the game mode being tested only to prevent massively skewed results)
Collect data from 10 matches per account tested
Each account tested gets its own tab in this sheet
Record the ping for each game and save screenshots of each lobby showing all of the players
Record how long it takes to get into a lobby from the moment you start searching (Optional)
Play each match fully while attempting to perform at the level of the account you’re testing (If you’re testing a 0.7K/D account, try to maintain a 0.7 K/D and comparable SPM each game)
After 10 games, record/screenshot the “Last 10 Games Played” Data in the after action report (all tabs)

The findings based on Xlcusive Ace’s video are listed below (thanks to Reddit for a quick summary). Note that each YouTuber found the same results after testing, which meant that the findings were consistent across different platforms and accounts.

Black Ops Cold War SBMM Test Results:

  • —“Being a higher skilled player may result in a worse connection than being a lower skilled player”
  • —“Matchmaking times significantly longer on main (high skill) account”
  • —“System is willing to expand search to a higher ping lobby in order to get a better skill match”
  • —“On low skill account teams were balanced evenly”
  • —“Since they cant find properly skill matched players for my (high skill) account…team balancing system has to compensate for this and give me the worst players on my team”
  • —“Since this system is so heavily balanced on recent performance and not actual skill – in reality this is a retention based system — not designed to be fair to players —- designed to keep you playing as long as possible with highs and lows.”
  • —“Massive swings from lobby to lobby instead of a progression of difficulty over time”
  • —“Ping may be getting worse as you get better at the game”

You can check out the complete raw data numbers on kills, deaths and more in this Google Document made and shared by the YouTubers involved in the testing.

Basically, it seems that Black Ops Cold War’s SBMM is the same as Modern Warfare, which was super strict (you can read about that here), meaning that this should be loved by new players to the game, or those that aren’t that good, but for vets and for those that can hold their own and then some, expect toughter matches, longer match wait times, laggy matches, and the like.

Surprised by the results or not at all? Do you think there’s a healthy compromise Activision and Call of Duty devs can come up with or is this too beneficial for new players that they should leave it be? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments below.

We’ve embedded the videos of each YouTuber who participated and who posted a video about it below as well.

Cloudpunk Review: Cyberpunk Genre Gets Lyfted

Cyberpunk is a genre and setting you would expect to be far more prevalent in video games than it is. Cities consisting of needlessly massive super structures reaching into the sky, the potential complexity and variation of NPCs one could interact with, all the elevators to hide load times strewn everywhere: it just makes so much sense.

This fall is an exciting time for fans of the genre as three cyberpunk games are being released. With Ghost Runner having recently been  released on consoles and Cyberpunk 2077 coming out in December, there’s plenty in which to indulge. Part of this trifecta of gloomy hyper-techno future is Cloudpunk: an ambitious freshman outing for indie studio Ion Lands out of Germany. This review will focus on the console edition since the PC version came out back in April. Can it stand up next to the two cousins it has in the genre as well as on its own merits? Let’s talk about it in our Cloudpunk review.

Point A to Point B and the Sky in Between

Let’s start with the game’s feature that provides the most striking initial impression: The visuals. This game uses voxel art (if you’re unfamiliar, think three-dimensional pixel art made of small cubes rather than other shapes of polygons). It has a real sense of place and age. It isn’t perfect of course, there are a couple of areas where you can clearly watch far off buildings slowly grow into existence as you fly closer, but in the moment to moment it’s truly impressive. I found myself wondering what all the little voxel stick-figures behind the lights in the windows were doing, whether they were working late or if they just ran out to keep their HOVA (this games version of hover cars) from getting towed and forgot to catch the lights on the way out. It’s the same feeling I’ve had seeing downtown Denver lit up after dark. The setting and atmosphere here are strong enough that I wanted to care about the inhabitants based on the strength of the world alone.

Cloudpunk3

The game is essentially a delivery sim, you fly your HOVA to a spot on the map, land it at a parking spot, and walk around platforms of various sizes and complexity until you find what you’re looking for. Typically an NPC, and engage them in a short conversation. During conversation the voxel person you’re speaking with appears in a highly detailed, mildly surrealistic portrait on the bottom of the screen with the spoken dialogue subtitled next to it. Then you disengage with them and are almost immediately contacted by either your HOVA’s on board AI named Camus, a software designed to act like a beloved dog, or one of another2-3 quest givers you meet along the way.

Conversation and character dialogue are nearly constant if you’re actively pursuing the main story objectives. In fact I would go so far as to say that this entire game plays out like the Rockstar Games style walk-and-talk sections. There aren’t any cinematics, but it is still clear that story was the main focus of development. The story is good, if not somewhat predictable at times, and I found myself caring about the constantly talking pictures that were floating on the bottom of the screen. The story is the second best part of the game so I don’t want to spoil anything. I will say that while it deals with common Cyberpunk themes: the value of the individual, the evil of uncaring corporate feudalism, transhumanism, the way our luck and money changes how we see the world, etc. It tackles all of these themes well and it never struck me as condescending. The voice acting is solid with only a couple odd portrait/vocal matchings. This goes for the story characters as well as the side characters. Plenty of those one off conversations or side mission stories are pretty enjoyable too.

Cloudpunk2
On foot sections can be played from this distant third person view as well as a behind the back 3rd person, and 1st person perspectives. You’re going to want to stick to this more distant view in most circumstances though. You can breathe in the scenery easier, and the camera controls are better.

Not All Clouds Have Rainbows

It’s a shame then that with all the solid background elements and features in the game, that the gameplay itself is lacking. As mentioned before, the whole game feels like a walk-and-talk. You fly to an objective listening to the dialogue, land, walk around picking up collectibles, most of which didn’t appear to do much other than fill up an inventory that I never had to open. I did a couple of times on accident and found that I had a smorgasbord of random things that never ended up having a purpose in my 13 hours of play time. In fact, between the dark color pallet and Synth-ambient music, I found myself struggling to stay awake while playing on a number of occasions once Raina’s com went quiet.

The HOVA itself flies slow enough that it is maneuverable but doesn’t ever get a particular sense of speed when driving it around. The walking sections are common but not the focus. For the most part you’re just slowly flying a hover car listening to people talk. On occasion, I found myself wondering why this wasn’t just made a voiced motion comic, or even a Podcast. But then I’d see the clouds billowing overhead and laugh at another one of Camus’ jokes and I’d keep going.

Cloudpunk1
It took an act of will to keep me from just making this review a gallery of screenshots.

Suffice after saying all that, to say that if you were expecting Need for Speed: Bladerunner or Crazy Taxi 9000, this isn’t it(if anyone knows someone at Capcom to try and make that happen please let me know). If you care about story and atmosphere more than anything, then this is likely worth your time. If the gameplay and interactive portion is your primary concern, it’s harder to recommend.

End of Shift

Cloudpunk is a game I’m glad exists. It’s a game I hope people see. It is definitely not for everyone, possibly even most people. But it leaves me very much hoping that Ion Lands gets to keep making games and gets to do so with a bigger budget as I suspect most of the issues I had with Cloudpunk would have been at least a little alleviated with a bigger budget. It is encouraging to see that the developers are still adding features and I’ll be following their work in the future.

SCORE: 6.5/10

PROS:

  • Excellent art direction and world building
  • Solid story and voice acting

CONS:

  • Slow repetitive gameplay
  • Unused or shallow mechanics
  • Maybe should have been a motion comic if not for the positives

How the Battle Pass System Could Shift Thanks to Genshin Impact

The battle pass has become a staple of most games that include a multiplayer or online element today. They’re an easy way for publishers and developers to monetise a game long after its release whilst giving players something meaningful in return for their cash. Whilst early monetisation methods were seen as cheap ways for a publisher such as EA to lock content behind a paywall or make a game easier if you were willing to pay for help, the battle pass system is totally the opposite.

Battle Passes

warzone battle pass

Whether you’re looking at For Honor, Call of Duty: Warzone, Destiny 2, or Fortnite, each game has its own battle pass system. Players pay roughly $15, and in return, they’re given potentially more than 100 rewards. All they need to do is play the game, earn experience, and unlock as many levels of the battle pass as they can before it expires. Fortnite pioneered this system and set the industry standard for it. The price hasn’t changed much, and the battle pass’s content has always been firmly rooted in cosmetics. When someone tries to offer gameplay advantages as part of a battle pass, players react badly.

The whole point of a battle pass is that it’s an optional way for players to support the game they love and earn some good-looking items in return. If that battle pass starts to become a pay-to-win pass, then players will quickly move away from it. No one is interested in a game with pay-to-win functionality, which has further helped shape the battle pass as we know it now.

Gacha

Wishes Guide - Intro 0c638f1e911a4b478b13c379a632f8e9

Enter Genshin Impact, a free-to-play game that exploded in popularity. While it does have a similar battle pass system, it’s microtransactions are very different from what we’ve come to expect from our online games. Here, players can spend in-game currency, which they can buy with real-world money, on a chance to earn a new character. That aspect of chance is what separates battle passes from what Genshin Impact offers. While you’d think that would mean that most players have shied away from what the game is offering, the total opposite is true.

Through Wishes, players can potentially earn a new character to use in Genshin Impact. Some of these characters are more powerful than others, therefore providing a clear gameplay advantage. Since Genshin Impact only allows for co-op online gameplay at the time of writing, this isn’t an issue. If there was a competitive mode, players might have reacted differently.

Genshin Impact’s launch saw players spending millions of dollars on Wishes. This is because players were trying to collect every character. It didn’t matter that they were probably paying more than they would for a battle pass. The game offered something new and exciting, and it struck a chord with everyone who played it.

The system I’m referring to is commonly known as gacha. It’s a similar system to loot boxes. Players buy a chance to earn a particular item, but they don’t always earn it. Instead, they have to keep paying for chances until they earn the reward they want. In Japan, where gacha is used in conjunction with collectibles, this is incredibly popular. Clearly, the system works just as well in games.

How it Could all Change

Now that one game has broadcasted gacha systems to an entirely new audience, battle passes could change. Over the coming years, we may well see monetisation in-game move away from guarantees rewards back to something that’s more akin to a casino online. Players could grow to love the chance of collecting a new item as much as some people love the feeling of playing a slot machine one more time.

The only issue is that loot boxes have been removed from most games because players despise them so much. So why does gacha work so well in Genshin Impact? It’s the collectible element that’s different there. Players are paying for a chance to earn something they want. They’re not opening a box for a chance at any number of items. They’re after something truly specific. Even if they don’t get it, the rewards help them in their game as they play. But when they earn that shiny new character, they’re on top of the world.

No one knows how battle passes will change in the future, but I suspect that they’ll start to encompass elements of gacha and online casinos. This could be with increased chances of earning a new collectible offered as part of the pass, bringing the two systems together. It could equally look a lot more drastic, with a battle pass linked to the number of attempts to earn a collectible you purchase. Much like loyalty points.

‘Tis the season of giving, and that’s exactly what Epic Games is doing as the return of their Holiday store sale is set to offer some deep discounts, but most importantly, 15 days of free games.

Starting December 17, the Epic Game Store will have an huge selection of PC titles on discount (up to 75%). While that certainly is an enticing offering, the offers don’t stop their as Epic Games has also confirmed that they will also be hosting 15 days of free games.

And when they say “free” they really mean it as the games will be forever to keep. The only catch? You’ll need to claim the titles within 24 hours of them going live otherwise you’ll miss out. If you’re a fan of Epic’s hugely popular free-to-play game Fortnite, check out the recent addition of Master Chief in the game! For Sony fans, God of War’s Kratos is available in the game too.

PGA Tour 2K21 Update 1.08 December 11 Putts Out (Update)

HB Studios has released the PGA Tour 2K21 update 1.08 December 11 patch, and this is an unannounced title update, which means players shouldn’t expect much in terms of new content and gameplay changes.

Update: HB Studios has finally revealed more details regarding today’s patch!

PGA Tour 2K21 Update 1.08 December 11 Patch Notes:

Heads up, today we’ve got an incoming patch for PGA Tour 2K21 on Xbox One and PS4.

The patch on PC, Stadia and the Nintendo Switch will follow within the next few days. Today’s patch includes:

  • Addressed reported concerns of a swing glitch that may occur when playing on Xbox Series X (Xbox patch only)
  • Club attributes in the Clubhouse Pass will now display properly
  • Addressed reports that the difficulty settings may not save correctly in Online Societies.

From the PS4 update history, it says:

  • Stability and performance improvements

That’s basically it. Unfortunately, the official PGA Tour 2K21 Twitter account has remained silent over this patch as well. However, once we know more info, we’ll be sure to update the post. If you spot any gameplay or technical fixes, let us know down in the comments below, and we’ll credit you for the find if it pans out.

If you haven’t picked the game up yet, make sure to check out our review where we said:

This game is made for fans of golf and fans of sports simulations. If you find yourself in either of those groups I recommend this without hesitation. If you are any other kind of gamer that admires well done sports games and quieter, thoughtful experiences. I would recommend this one heartily with only a couple of words of caution. Whatever your background and preferences, nearly everyone loves an underdog. The scrappy challenger that tries something new and ends up changing the game and becoming the new top dog. That’s kind of the story of this franchise. You have to respect it for that if nothing else.\

PGA Tour 2K21 is out now on the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Update: We’ve updated the post with the official patch notes from HB Studios.

Black Ops Cold War Season 1 Roadmap, New Maps, Weapons & New Warzone Content Revealed

Following the big Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War datamined leak of info earlier this week, Treyarch has blown the lid wide open! Not only did we get a Black Ops Cold War Season 1 roadmap, but the studio has released info regarding the new maps, new weapons, new Warzone content and loads more!

Check out the gameplay trailer featuring Season 1 content and then dive in below!

Get a drink, as this will be a huge info dump!

Black Ops Cold War Season 1 Roadmap – New Weapons, New Maps, New Warzone Content & More:

New Weapons:

MAC 10: SMG (Launch Week)

Featuring an impressive fully automatic fire rate initially tempered by a slight vertical recoil and moderate damage, this new SMG benefits from improved handling speeds.

Obtain the MAC 10 for free to use in Black Ops Cold War and Warzone at Tier 15 of the Season One Battle Pass, just by playing the game.

Groza: Assault Rifle (Launch Week)

A fully automatic assault rifle with excellent handling speeds and solid damage, as well as a fast fire rate and impressive damage range.

Obtain the Groza for free to use in Black Ops Cold War and Warzone at Tier 31 of the Season One Battle Pass, just by playing the game.

Streetsweeper: Shotgun (In Season)

With the fastest fire rate in its class and a larger ammo pool than its brethren, this is a fully automatic shotgun designed to clear out rooms of multiple foes. Prior to your gunsmithing, expect slightly reduced damage but with reliable weapon control.

Sledgehammer: Melee (In Season)

Leave a mark with the Sledgehammer, a thick and weighty melee armament to take with you when bludgeoning is the plan of attack.

Wakizashi: Melee (In Season)

A personal defense weapon and companion sword to the samurai’s Katana, this traditionally forged blade uses two types of steel in its construction and is lightweight, resilient to force, and durable to wear.

Obtain the Streetsweeper, Sledgehammer, and the Wakizashi to use in Black Ops Cold War and Warzone during Season One in one of two ways: Complete a related Challenge to obtain the free base weapon or purchase a bundle with a Blueprint from the weapon family when it appears in the Store.

New Maps:

The Pines (6v6) (Launch Week)

Located in a neon-drenched New Jersey shopping center, The Pines is a medium-sized, multi-level map at 2900 Churman Drive, just off the I-189. The date is January 21, 1984, and there’s little time to check out the latest tech at Radio House or drop a few quarters into the Pitfall!™  machine at the Galaxy Room: This is where Stitch and Adler get reacquainted. Cutting through the unique shops that populate the side lanes allows for quick, intense close-quarter battles and focused combat, while heading through the middle of the mall enables longer range assault rifle and sniper-focused duels.

Raid (6v6) (Launch Week)

A legendary map that debuted in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Raid is a sprawling luxury complex within the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, California. Fighting takes place across the living space, including a lush courtyard at the map’s center, a bedroom overlooking a breathtaking pool area, a basketball half court, a well-kept garden and nearby guest living space, and the iconic roundabout entrance to the mansion. Don’t stop to admire this exquisite dream home; the three-lane design gives way to competitive

Nuketown ’84 Holiday (6v6) (Launch Week)

One of the most iconic Black Ops maps returned in the lead-up to Season One. Now, get ready to celebrate a festive take on this Nevada testing ground; there’s a new glow coming to Nuketown ’84 this holiday season!

Game Show (2v2) (Launch Week)

Engage your fellow contestants in a battle of wits and gunfire, with the emphasis on the gunfire. This studio setting features plenty of places to engage a less cerebral form of competition, from the contestant podium to the stepped stage and ‘80s camera equipment.

ICBM (2v2) (Launch Week)

Set inside a remote launch bay of a clandestine launch facility, engage in explosive combat under the gigantic exhausts of an inter-continental ballistic missile. A roughly circular setting, with control stations, support struts, and a central payload area all viable options to take cover behind.

KGB (2v2) (Launch Week)

Hammer victory home among the ostentatious trappings of the old USSR: Deep within the famous Lubyanka KGB building is an ornate hallway of imposing marble. Seek cover behind thick wooden desks and tall library bookcases and secure a Gunfight win for you and your comrade.

U-Bahn (2v2) (Launch Week)

Descend into the underground tunnels beneath West Berlin. Look past the concourse and tile walls of the Metro platform and storm the parked train and open subway carriage using the graffiti-covered subway car, central support pillars, and other areas as cover during this subterranean assault.

Sanatorium (Fireteam) (In Season)

Deep in the Ural Plains is a Soviet experimental health retreat – the focus of a clandestine investigation by NATO forces in September 1984. Low wooded hills provide cover for fireteam squads to gain reconnaissance over the main, roughly circular-shaped main “hotel”: a concrete, brutalist architectural behemoth flanked by lakeside structures and a large wooden dock. With links to secret testing within State Sanatorium U-23, notes found within the grounds of this sprawling complex indicate a conditioning trial known as Project Golova.

New Streaks and Vehicle:

Scorestreak: H.A.R.P. (Launch Week)

This high-flying stealth aircraft (or High-Altitude Reconnaissance Plane) shows both enemy positions and their directions on the mini-map, giving you a key advantage during the end-game moments of a Multiplayer match.

Vehicle: Tactical Raft (In Season)

A fast-moving boat that allows for quick maneuvering and carrying personnel across water-based terrain, beginning with the lake in the Sanatorium Fireteam map. Deft use of this watercraft can turn the tide of battle in the right hands.

New Multiplayer Modes:

Gunfight (2v2) (Launch Week)

The seminal Modern Warfare 2v2 game mode now comes to Black Ops for the first time! Sometimes fast, sometimes fraught, but almost always resulting in high-tension rounds, the rules are simple: Be the last duo standing.

You and your partner face off against two rivals in one of four brand-new maps and attempt to take both your enemies down using a random loadout. Should the time run out, an Overtime Flag spawns for an additional 10 seconds, and both teams have the opportunity to capture it and win the round. If neither team captures the flag, the team with the most total health wins the round. The first team to six rounds wins the match.

Prop Hunt (6v6) (Launch Week)

The hilarious fan-favorite mode returns! Two teams alternate between being the Props or the Hunters every round. The Props disguise themselves as everyday items scattered around the various multiplayer maps, from a Soviet ticket booth to a baby grand piano. Props also have access to a concussive blast if a Hunter gets too close, as well as the ability to deploy clones to create confusion. However, Props also automatically whistle every 20 seconds, enabling keen-eared Hunters to hone in on their location.

A round ends once all the Props are found and destroyed, or at least one Prop survives at the end of the time limit. There are multiple rounds, meaning everyone gets a chance to hide and seek. The first team to take three rounds wins. Easy to understand, difficult to master, and always amusing, this party mode is a true test of keen eyesight, map knowledge, and outmaneuvering the world’s toughest Operators… as a piece of scenery.

Dropkick (6v6) (In Season)

This frantic game of nuclear hot potato features two teams each vying for control of a special and extremely important briefcase. The round begins with each team racing to the location of the nuclear briefcase and attempting to pick it up. Anyone grabbing the briefcase is automatically equipped with a powerful pistol, but it’s ideally up to the rest of the team to keep the briefcase-carrier safe. The team with the case gains access to launch codes, as well as an ever-increasing score for their team.

If you die while your team controls the briefcase, you will not respawn until your carrier has been eliminated and the briefcase has been dropped. If your team isn’t carrying the case, it must be flushed out and retrieved before it’s too late. Once one team reaches the score limit by controlling and owning the briefcase, orders to execute a nuclear strike are confirmed, and the round is won… in a highly explosive manner! The first team to 200 score wins.

Combined Arms: Hardpoint (12v12) (Launch Week)

Everyone’s favorite king-of-the-hill mode gets even bigger in Combined Arms: Hardpoint. The rules are simple: two teams of 12 fight for ownership of the Hardpoint as it rotates throughout the map, earning points for time spent inside the zone.

Much like its 6v6 version, victory in Hardpoint goes to the first team to reach the score limit, or to the team with the highest score when time runs out. Miami also joins the Combined Arms map rotation in Season One, giving players a total of four 12v12 battlegrounds to choose from.

Season Challenges (Launch Week)

Need even more ways to earn rewards throughout Season One? Then ready yourself for Season Challenges! Available in Black Ops Cold War, expect two collections of 20 Calling Cards (20 related to Multiplayer, and 20 for Zombies), with each Calling Card becoming accessible in both collections at every ten Season Levels.

Be sure to aim for level 200 to unlock every Season Challenge during the course of the season – once unlocked, you can continue to earn progress toward completing these during future seasons.

New Prestige Levels and Prestige Shop (Launch Week)

At the start of Season One, your Season Level will reset to 1 while keeping all of your Create-a-Class content unlocked during your Military Rank leveling, and your progress will resume from the highest Prestige Level you achieved in the pre-season. This season offers four additional Prestiges to achieve across the first 200 levels, as well as a new Weapon Blueprint, as follows:

·      Level 50: New Prestige, Emblem, Prestige Key, Weapon Blueprint, and Battle Pass Tier Skip

·      Level 100: New Prestige, Emblem, Prestige Key, and Battle Pass Tier Skip

·      Level 150: New Prestige, Emblem, Prestige Key, and Battle Pass Tier Skip

·      Level 200: New Prestige, Emblem, Prestige Key, Battle Pass Tier Skip, Master Prestige Calling Card, and all Season Challenges unlocked

·      Level 250-1,000: New Prestige Key every 50 levels

This means you can earn up to four new Prestiges during Season One, and you’ll always earn progress toward the Prestige that comes after your current one, as well as being able to catch up to the latest available Prestige if you didn’t reach it during the previous season.

Reach level 200 in Season One to achieve the title of Prestige Master for this season. This changes your Season Level color, and you’ll be able to personalize your Prestige Icon with Legacy Prestige Icons from previous Call of Duty games, simply by spending some of your earned Prestige Keys at the Prestige Shop.

You can continue past level 200 all the way to level 1,000 during Season One and receive Prestige Key milestone rewards at every 50 levels along the way.

Warzone:

New Map: Rebirth Island (Launch Week)

Warzone delivers with a mass of free content including an entirely new battle royale experience: Rebirth Island.

An illicit Soviet base raided and shut down by the CIA in 1968, during which Operator Russell Adler caught and forcefully interrogated the base commander Vikhor “Stitch” Kuzmin. The facility was rebuilt and recommissioned by Stitch in 1984 with one purpose: the creation and testing of the deadly Nova 6 gas.

Part prison, part chemical bioweapons manufacturing and testing facility, the entire island has dozens of locations to explore including laboratories, barracks, decontamination areas, and a hilltop prison block where unspeakable acts have been perpetrated.

Expect intense, close-quarter action with a similar playstyle to Warzone’s Mini BR mode as Rebirth Island comes to Warzone. Planned playlists include Trios and Quads with a lower player count than in Verdansk, amping up the action and intensity.

To celebrate this new Warzone map experience, expect an intense and rewarding limited-time event offering 16 challenges for those dropping into Rebirth Island for the first time. Earn Calling Cards, Charms, Emblems, Stickers, a special LMG Blueprint “Noxious”, along with additional secrets to uncover!

New Verdansk Gulag Experience (Launch Week)

It’s time to step out of the Gulag showers as prisoners of Warzone are now dragged to an interrogation room, strapped to a chair, and thrown into an all-new Gulag where the 1v1 battle rules are similar, but the arena is completely different! Watch from the spectator gantry, spraying, punching, or lobbing rocks at adversaries before entering the secret training facility below: A new yet instantly familiar face-off in a Nuketown facsimile built by the Soviets who constructed Black Ops Cold War’s Amerika Town!

The design is a makeshift replica of the original Nuketown map layout with both home interiors and backyard barricaded off, focusing the duel to a confined central arena. Prisoners must now weave through or around the parked bus and faux truck to meet their target or take a risk by climbing up one of the home’s awnings to get solid sightlines across the zone. As usual, the last Operator standing, or the one that grabs the central overtime flag, gets a second chance in Verdansk.

New Rebirth Island Gulag Experience (Launch Week)

There’s a second new Gulag coming to Warzone! Deep below the surface of Rebirth Island’s Prison Block, prisoners are dragged to an ominous new arena during traditional Battle Royale modes. This classified location has a grim history, as certain inmates were experimented on as part of Perseus’ plot to turn the tide of the Cold War.

This new 1v1 experience is centered around the chamber in question, with prisoners of Warzone starting on the end of one of two hallways that run parallel to the center room. Although these pathways offer a quick route across the floor, both of them have a metal detector that will go off whenever an Operator passes through, adding an additional element of strategy to this intense duel for survival. And remember: your fellow prisoners can still lob rocks down into the arena while they wait for their shot at a second chance.

New Game Mode: Resurgence (Launch Week)

Think you’re dead? It’s not over yet: This new game mode for Rebirth Island focuses on respawning as a key to victory. Scavenge caches and gear up as normal, hunt down other squads, and focus on dropping every last one of them, otherwise they’re liable to respawn and seek revenge!

·      The Gulag is closed (likely for some deep fumigation).

·      After taking out an enemy, you’ll gain a moment of extreme clarity on where the rest of that enemy team is located. Now finish them!

·      If you’re taken down, there’s no time for a Gulag battle in this game mode! Instead, watch your squadmates and hope they survive for long enough as the Rebirth Countdown reaches zero, after which you automatically drop back into the fray.

New Vehicle: Attack Helicopter (In Season)

Bring death from above to Verdansk and Rebirth Island with the Attack Helicopter, the latest addition to the Warzone vehicle fleet! This airborne menace is built to similar specifications as the regular Helicopter, but with one major exception: Mounted on both of the helicopter’s side rails is a belt-fed minigun that can be controlled by a fellow squad member. Finding an Attack Helicopter is not only a boon for those looking for a rapid travel option, but also raining down dozens of bullets on other squads without needing to use a primary or secondary weapon. Just know that this tiny terror is anything but subtle, especially when both miniguns are in use!

Black Ops Cold War Content Integration: Additional Operators (Launch Week)

At the start of Season One, expect the Mil-Sim Operators Song (NATO) and Vargas (Warsaw Pact) to become available in Warzone, along with Stitch. All the other launch-day Black Ops Cold War Operators are already available in Warzone, providing you unlock any necessary challenges related to them.

From this point, all future Black Ops Cold War Operators will simultaneously appear in Warzone once any necessary unlock challenges are completed.

Black Ops Cold War Content Integration: Over 30 Cold War Weapons! (Launch Week)

Expect a huge addition to your Warzone armory as a vast infusion of Cold War weaponry becomes available for you to use in your loadouts! Unless a weapon has a particular challenge needed to unlock it, Black Ops Cold War Primary and Secondary weapons – including Blueprint variants – will be accessible in Warzone.

Season One weapons such as the Groza AR and MAC 10 SMG become available in both games once you reach the specific Battle Pass Tiers needed to unlock them.

Black Ops Cold War Content Integration: Progression (Launch Week)

The progression system that links XP between Black Ops Cold WarWarzone, and even Modern Warfare becomes available in Season One. Here’s what to expect:

When Season One drops, expect your Season Level to be synchronized across all three titles based on your current Season Level in Black Ops Cold War. Note that all your previous unlocks (from Black Ops Cold War and Modern Warfare, such as Weapons, Perks, Scorestreaks, or Killstreaks) will remain unlocked.

From this point onward, playing in any of the three games counts toward player and Battle Pass progression, giving you the freedom to play as you wish. Here are some examples. You can:

·      Play in Black Ops Cold War and/or Warzone and earn Battle Pass XP to unlock Tiers in the Season One Battle Pass.

·      Play in Modern Warfare earn Battle Pass XP to unlock Tiers in the Season One Battle Pass, though these Battle Pass rewards are only accessible in Black Ops Cold War and Warzone.

·      Use Black Ops Cold War weapons and gain Weapon XP in either Black Ops Cold War or Warzone.

·      Use Modern Warfare weapons and gain Weapon XP in either Modern Warfare or Warzone.

·      Earn XP in Warzone or Modern Warfare to increase your Season Levels and Prestige in Black Ops Cold War.

Mastercrafts are Back

A new tier of Blueprints is coming as part of Season One, and it is home to the wildest creations that your arsenal could hold: Mastercrafts.

Returning from Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, these special cosmetic skins are unlike any others in-game, transforming a weapon into an absolute work of art hand-crafted by Treyarch’s finest. Getting one of these amazing armaments is sure to make the rest of the lobby envious, as these Mastercrafts are a unique cosmetic addition on top of an already fantastic five-attachment Weapon Blueprint. Consider these “Ultra” level weapon variants, a level of rarity above even “Legendary.”

Why not begin your collection with the “Rocket Science” Mastercraft Bundle? This is a five-attachment, high-damage assault rifle that has a miniature ICBM on top of it. That bundle, as well as the “Mint Condition” Mastercraft Bundle, which turns an SMG into a vibrant armament for every gun collector with a penchant for the 80s aesthetic, are among the Mastercraft bundles available later this season.

For a look at the new Zombies content, Operators and other bundles, head on over here.

This is an insane amount of content for Black Ops Cold War’s Season 1! Once the update is out for the season, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.
