Top 7 Reasons Why Apex Legends Can and Will Hook in Non-Battle Royale Fans

I have to confess: I’ve never been a fan of battle royale games. It doesn’t matter if it’s PUBG, Fortnite, or even Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout, I just don’t dig the whole genre since you wait for a long time to actually start a match, and it can be over even before you’ve picked up a weapon.

However, I find myself playing Apex Legends more and more each day. Is it because of the hype? I doubt it since Fortnite and Blackout had a ton more hype around them, and I didn’t feel hooked in with both even after trying it repeatedly.

Below, are some of the reasons why I think Apex Legends has succeeded in sucking in non-battle royale fans like myself into the fold.

Super Easy to Get Into

Is the building element of Fortnite daunting? Yeah, I thought so. In Apex Legends, you’re given a chance to pick a Legend, read up on their abilities and that’s it, mostly. While each character has different skills, they don’t overrun the game that you’ll wish you read up on each the first time you boot it up. Each Legend ability is easy enough to figure out, and they’re easy enough to use as well. Of course, being able to use an ability is vastly different from being good at using said ability, and that’s where the skill gap comes in.

Pace Is Fast But Not Too Much

When people think of battle royale, most think of approaching things slow, being methodical, taking your time picking out loot and more. While that’s present in Apex Legends, the overall experience is a lot faster. Think of it it as battle royale arcade, though it’s so much more than that.

Gunplay Has That Titanfall Feel…

Of course, however everything is packaged, if the overall “feel” of the game and its gunplay isn’t up to snuff, no one will play it, right? Thankfully, Apex Legends has the same tight gunplay feel that Titanfall 2 has, which isn’t surprising since Respawn has basically gathered the guns in Titanfall 2, changed their make up a bit, and plopped them in Apex Legends.

…and Legend Abilities Are Fun and Fair

Apex Legends is a mish-mash of different kinds of games put together, and one of its components is that it’s a hero shooter in addition to being a battle royale game. While this could have very well led to a disaster in terms of balancing, it hasn’t so far. Each character has a set of abilities — both passive and active — that can be used to either attack enemies, support their squadmates, or help themselves.

Each Legend feels unique, and while the game hasn’t been out for a long time, there’s no current meta where one Legend easily outpaces the rest. You can use any of the Legends and feel like you’re contributing to your squad; it all depends on your play style.

Ping System Is Genius

Like it or not, not everyone uses mics when playing video games, and honestly, sometimes it’s better that way. Well, Respawn has found a way to circumvent this and it’s pure genius! In Apex Legends, there’s a “ping” system where players can tag items, areas of interest, enemies, and more all with the touch of a button! Think of it as something close to Battlefield ‘s spotting system, but without the Doritos, and useful in almost situation.

I’ll be very surprised if other games don’t copy this ping system of Respawn’s. It’s easily one of the game’s best features.

You Can Get Resurrected

In other battle royale games, once you’re down, you can get revived, but once you’re dead, you stay dead. It’s not the case in Apex Legends. For a considerable amount of time, once you’ve been downed and outright killed, your ally can pick up your banner and resurrect you in one of the game’s many respawn points.

It’s one way to have people stick around even when they’re dead, and it blends in well with Apex Legends’ focus on teamwork.

There’s No Long Wait Between Matches! Loading Times, Matchmaking, and More Are Super Fast, Which Makes Jumping From One Game to the Next Bearable

This last one might seem like a small thing for some, but for someone like me that abhorred looking at loading screens and waiting, this might be one of the best hooks in the game! In Apex Legends, the loading is super fast, and you never wait long in filling a match, matchmaking, waiting for allies to pick a Legend, and more.

There’s no staging area that you’ll be put in before the match is filled. Just hit a button to matchmake, and in a few quick seconds, you’re picking a Legend and then being dropped off as a team or solo.

The fact that Apex Legends has super fast load times, quick matchmaking is the perfect remedy for Call of Duty (and multiplayer shooter fans in general) who hate all the waiting in battle royale games.

There you have it! Do you agree with our list? Are you someone that’s not a battle royale fan that got roped in by Apex Legends? If so, let us know how it did in the comments below.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Loot Boxes Introduced in Latest Update, Now Has 3 In-Game Microtransaction Sources

In case you haven’t turned on your PS4 or Xbox One just yet, you might want to do that now, as a new title update for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is live! This big patch not only introduces a slew of multiplayer tweaks, but there’s a bunch of new content from Operation: Grand Heist.

While we’re getting a new Specialist, a couple of new guns, weapon camos and more, it seems we’re also getting another thing that possibly no one asked for, which are Reserve Crates (Reserve Cases); Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s term for loot boxes. Those who played Black Ops 3 will remember these as Supply Drops. Note that Reserve Cases can be earned within the game by playing multiplayer and Blackout.

With the introduction of Black Ops 4 loot boxes, the game now has three microtransaction sources within the game! Players can use real world money to buy character/weapon skins and other stuff, use real world money to skip “Tiers” in its Contraband stream, and now, Reserve Crates. Here’s what they look like in the game.

Direct purchase items using real world money:

Contraband Stream with “skippable” tiers (you can buy a tier(s) for real world money):

Black Ops 4 Reserve Cases and Crates (Supply Drops/loot boxes):

Again, the Contraband items, and the Reserve Cases can be earned by playing multiplayer and/or Blackout, and these only include cosmetic items (as far as we know). Let’s hope that no weapons are gated behind Reserve Cases/Crates since Black Ops 3 suffered from this via its Supply Drop system.

For those keeping score, Black Ops 4 is a full priced $60 game, and has a Season Pass, and now has an assortment of microtransaction sources in the game itself. I gather, Activision must be pressing hard to obtain more money from the game due to it under-performing.

Do you think this year’s Call of Duty will end up the same? And the bigger question here is: will you be OK with it?

We’ve been reading the conversation around the Armoured Fist Assignment, and yes, we’ve seen all the memes.

This is just a quick update to let you know that based on your feedback we’ve made a change via a backend tweak which adjusts the requirements of this Assignment.

This change is already on our live servers and results in the 20 kill requirement being reduced down to 5.

Based on this feedback we’ve also made adjustments to a number of upcoming Assignments.

As always, please do keep the feedback coming.

How’s that for some good news for today, Battlefield V players? In other BFV news, DICE will unveil the latest Grand Operation set to hit the game later this week!

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Update 1.13 Now Out, Here’s How Big It Is and the Known List of Changes

Update #2:

The patch notes for today’s update has been outlined below.

Update #1:

Updated the post with the official content found in Operation: Grand Heist straight from the press release.

As expected, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 update 1.13 is now rolling out for Xbox One and PS4! It’s now live on Xbox One, and clocks in at 11GB, while the PS4 patch is at . PC players will get their update later in the week.

The big stuff included in Black Ops 4 update 1.13 is, of course, the introduction of the new Operation called “Grand Heist.” Unfortunately for Xbox One owners, this Operation is set to arrive on the PS4 first, with the Xbox One, and PC getting it seven days after.

Treyarch is doing a huge balance pass for multiplayer, which you can read up on below. Once the full patch notes are live, we’ll update the post.

Operation Grand Heist’s free, new content includes:
  • New Specialist – Available in Multiplayer and Blackout, Outrider makes her Black Ops 4 debut, allowing players to silently take out enemies with explosive precision with her longbow, the Sparrow.
  • New Blackout Location and Updates – Drop into the roughest, toughest, and wildest new Blackout location, Ghost Town, which features two areas. Inspired byStandoff, an intense classic multiplayer map from Black Ops II, the above ground destination provides flanking routes that call for strategic positioning with long and medium ranged combat. Below ground, fans can also explore underlying caverns inspired by the classic Zombies map Buried, where they’ll find heavy duty gear amongst hordes of the undead. Additionally, Operation Grand Heistintroduces a new Blackout mode called Hot Pursuit, launching on February 22 on PlayStation 4 and other platforms to follow. Hot Pursuit is fast-paced and frenetic, and debuts three new vehicles – SUV, muscle car and PBR assault boat, all in special variants themed to Operation Grand Heist – as squads race to supply drops placed around the map containing high-level armor, weapons and grenades to dominate their opponents.
  • New Black Market Gear – The Black Market has been restocked with new weapon camos, outfits, gestures, and accessories themed for Operation Grand Heist. This includes notable weapons like the Rampage Auto Shotgun, Switchblade X9 SMG, and the Home Wrecker demolition hammer, all unlockable through the Contraband Tiers as fans play through the game. A new long-range weapon called the Vendetta Sniper Rifle is also coming later in the season.
  • New Zombies Features – Operation Grand Heist delivers new features to the Zombies mode including a new round-based Gauntlet challenge mode for the Classified map, along with a brand-new perk addition called the Ethereal Razor that substantially increases a player’s melee damage with area of effect and life re-gen for each hit.
In addition to the free content, Black Ops Pass owners gain access to even more in-game content, available first on PlayStation®4:
  • New Multiplayer Map, Casino – A medium-sized map set in a luxurious casino in Monaco where elite thieves formed an elaborate plan to steal the winning racecars on display. Casino features high-intensity combat as players weave through buzzing slot-machines and topple across gambling tables. This wide-open space allows for long-range to mid-range combat with little protection from enemies.
  • New Multiplayer Map, Lockup – A medium-sized map set in a Los Angeles police station, Lockup was the site of an assault to destroy evidence that led to the headquarters of an organized crime syndicate. Fans can dominate the rooftop positions, bail out when cornered and tactically shut down areas with operational doors to gain the upper hand on their opponents.
  • New Blackout Character, Cosmic Silverback – Black Ops Pass owners will unlock this deadly Zombie silverback gorilla, an iconic fan-favorite boss originally from the Dead Ops Arcade from Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Apex Legends New Modes Called “Recruit,” and “Survival” Unearthed via Game Files

Just a few days ago, we reported that a couple of new Apex Legends heroes might be coming to the game based on a datamine of the game’s files. Well, it seems that’s not the only thing we’re getting that’s new!

Found by fan-ran GamingIntel, the game’s files mentions a few new Apex Legends new modes! One of them is called “Recruit,” and it seems it’ll be a 20 vs. 20 match, and every enemy you revive will be recruited to be on your team; last team alive wins the game.

Another mode found in the files is called “Survival,” with other Apex Legends fan-ran Twitter account RealApexLeaks stating that we might see a host NPC (non-playable character), which there are eight to choose from. They’re not the normal Legends (read: the ones out now).

Finally, ApexLBR has found what appears to be a TDM mode (team deathmatch) for Apex Legends, though it could be something from Titanfall 2 given there’s the word “Pilot” at the bottom. For those unaware, Titanfall used the term Pilots for soldiers.

We’ve reached out to EA for a comment on this, and will update the story if we get a response.

For something more tangible, check out what how the Apex Legends netcode fares against the likes of Fortnite, PUBG, and more.

PlanetSide Arena Delayed, New Release Date Planned to Launch Simultaneously With PS4 Version

Originally set to launch in January 2019 before being moved to March, PlanetSide Arena is getting delayed once more. Over on the game’s official site, Daybreak Games penned a letter to fans thanking them for participating in the closed beta, and how it’ll launch the game simultaneously wit the PS4 version.

Another big thing in the letter is how all pre-orders are being refunded. Check out the full PlanetSide Arena delayed message below.

First off, a huge thank you to everyone who participated in our Closed Beta these past few weeks. Your suggestions have been crucial in providing our team with direct and meaningful gameplay feedback. We can’t even begin to express our appreciation for all of the time and effort you’ve spent helping us test and improve the game.

After much consideration, we’ve decided to postpone the current PC-only release date and launch simultaneously across PC and PlayStation 4 this summer. We’ve always envisioned PlanetSide Arena as a way for players to experience the epic gameplay of the PlanetSide universe, through fast-paced, combined arms combat and massive-scale multiplayer modes. We believe that delivering the most polished version of PlanetSide Arena that meets these expectations, on both platforms, outweighs any other consideration.

In light of our revised launch plan, we are refunding all Planetside Arena pre-orders. We’re committed to continuing and expanding our Beta testing program as we ramp-up for our multi-platform launch this Summer and will share more details soon. You can visit Steamfor more information on refunds.

Thank you all again for your amazing support. We’re very excited about the future and can’t wait see everyone back in the Arena!

– The PlanetSide Arena Team

Let’s hope Daybreak Games can nail a firm release date, and it’s actually good to stand out from the competition.

Anthem Xbox One Suspend Bug Has an Unofficial Fix and Here’s How to Do It

If you’re already playing Anthem on Xbox One via EA’s Play First program, and you suspend the game rather than closing the app, you might have noticed how it’s not working properly.

While there’s no official patch to fix this just yet, BioWare is aware of the situation. Lead Producer Michael Gamble has posted an Anthem Xbox One Suspend bug fix, and it’s relatively easy to do!

Xbox people this is important: there’s a known bug where if you suspend your game on Xbox and come back later on and resume it, it won’t re-connect. When you’re done, kill the title and relaunch when you play next. Otherwise it sits on the reconnecting screen forever

Hopefully, this will get sorted officially soon.

In other Anthem news, go check out our first look at the game’s shop and how real world currency is sold.  Make sure to bookmark MP1st’s Anthem game hub as we’ll be posting the latest news once we get them.

MP1st’s review of Anthem will hit the site soon, though expect it after launch as we’re waiting on the launch day patch to be rolled out, and of course, we want to play the game in real world conditions.

Rainbow Six Siege Operation Burnt Horizon Introduces New Operators, Watch the Gameplay Trailer Now

At today’s Six Invitational 2019, Ubisoft has announced the full details for Season 1 of Year 4 of Rainbow Six Siege! Same as before, two new Operators and a new map are entering the fold.

In Rainbow Six Siege Burnt Horizon, players will be introduced to an all-new Attacker, and all-new Defender from the Australian SASR Mobility Platoon. Named Gridlock and Mozzie, these new Operators will also come with a new map named Outback. Check out the gameplay trailer below to see the Operator gadget tips and more.

Operation Burnt Horizon brings two new Operators, the Attacker Gridlock and the Defender Mozzie, both friends for years in the Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) Platoon. Gridlock uses Trax Stingers, a portable version of road spikes that when activated, deploys a hexagonal cluster of spikes. When Defenders step on them, the Trax Stingers deal damage and slow them, making this gadget a good map control tool. In the meantime, Mozzie can deploy a Pest Launcher. When launched, the Pest latches onto the nearest enemy drone and obscures its camera. The Pest then initiates an override sequence to hack the drone and grant full control to Mozzie.

Alongside these two new Operators, Burnt Horizon introduces the map Outback, a lonely service station forgotten on one of Australia’s iconic motorways. Outback is divided into three distinct sections – the Garage, the Motel, and the Restaurant – all of which are unique and distinctly recognizable, even from a distance. Outback is a medium-sized map, so players won’t need to go far to find alternative routes. Packed with twists, turns, and Australiana, Outback is filled with unexpected corners and souvenirs from the Great Southern Land.

The Test Server for Burnt Horizon will go live this February 18 for PC.

Tekken 7 DLC Characters Negan and Julia Release Date Revealed in New Trailer

There’s a new trailer out now for Tekken 7, and it showcases The Walking Dead’s Negan, and franchise returning fighter, Julia!

More importantly than the gameplay for both characters shown are the character release dates! The Tekken 7 Negan release date is now confirmed to be on February 28. Oh, and Julia will be out at that time as well.

Make sure to watch the clip to see Negan use his bat and just flat out stab someone as an attack! It looks brutal, but it looks fun, too.

If you’re not an owner of the Tekken 7 Season Pass 2, expect to pony up $4.99 for Julia, and $7.99 for Negan if you buy them piecemeal.

In almost every online multiplayer game, one of the biggest topics being discussed regardless of genre is the netcode. If you’re curious how the Apex Legends netcode is, and how it compares to other games in the shooter genre, wonder no more!

YouTuber Battle(non)sense is back at it again, and this time, he takes a deep dive into the Apex Legends servers and netcode! Given how we can’t see our in-game ping, or which server we’re connected to, Battle(non)sense had to do a little bit of finagling to find these out.

Note: tests done were on PC.

If you’re curious how it compares to the likes of Fortnite, PUBG, Battlefield V, and more, check out the graphic below.

apex legends netcode

Be sure to watch the video to see the delays for gunfights, movement and more. Note that Apex Legends does run on dedicated servers, and the outcome from the deep dive shouldn’t dictate whether you’re having fun in a game or not.

Surprised at the servers and netcode performance of Apex Legends? Will this affect how much fun you’re having in the game?
