Game Workers Unite Organization Calling for Activision CEO Bobby Kotick to Be Fired Amidst Mass Layoffs

Just a few days ago, during Activision’s earnings call, the publisher revealed that it has laid off about eight percent of its workforce, roughly around 775 employees from various departments. This is being implemented even while the publisher has announced that it has set a new record for revenue during the fiscal year of 2018.

Well, it seems some people have had enough. Game Workers Unite, a grassroots labor organization, is calling for Activision CEO Bobby Kotick to be fired due the firing of almost 800 employees all the while Activision execs receive millions in bonuses and salary.

According to the organization, Bobby Kotick’s annual salary of $30 million dollars is enough to cover the salaries of all the people laid off if you divide it. Not only that, but the union also questions the $15 million dollar “bonus” Activision CFO Dennis Durkin received just for “changing his job title.”  We’ve listed down the series of tweets below, which is also marked by the hashtag, #FireBobbyKotick.

Upending 800 workers’ lives while raking in millions in bonuses for you and your c-suite buddies isn’t leadership, it’s theft. We, the workers of Activision and their friends, have had enough. Join us in saying that it’s time to

The 800 workers who helped with community management, marketing games, running eSports, legal, and so much more are all far more valuable than the CEO. When making the decision to cut someone from Activision we’d choose to every time.

Bobby Kotick has been raking in $30 million dollars a year as Activision CEO, that massive income doesn’t come from nowhere. It comes from the labor of his employees. Kotick’s wealth is built from the stolen wages of his workers.

Activision, under Kotick’s leadership, gave a $15 million dollar bonus to the CFO *just for changing his job title* then they have the gall to turn around and lay off 800 workers just days later?

Not convinced Kotick’s leadership is anything but greedy and exploitative? Iwata, as CEO of Nintendo, cut his own pay during times of trouble to ensure no employees would lose their jobs. And Activision saw record profits this year! They have no excuse.

If we divided Kotick’s obscene annual pay (one the highest paid CEOs in the world) it alone could pay full salaries for all 800 laid off workers.

It’s disgusting to hear Kotick boasting about record revenue for the company then announcing an 8% staffing cut in the next breath. Kotick was especially proud to announce the 9% bump to stockholder values. That 9% comes from our labor.

The cycle of layoffs continue to derail our industry because of the prioritization of shareholder profits over workers lives and quality game development. If you want to help change the industry for the better, we encourage you to get involved today.

The petition calling for Bobby Kotick’s head is now at over 3,000 signees out of its target of 4,000. You can check it out here.

While the sentiment is there, and the organization is made up of game developers from various studios across the world, even if the petition hits its target or even doubles it, I doubt it’ll be enough to unseat the current Activision CEO.

Here’s The Division 2 Map Overlay of Washington DC via Google Maps

In case you didn’t know, The Division 2 is set in Washington DC compared to the first one which was set in New York. If you’re curious how The Division 2 map compares to its real life counterpart, this might pique your curiosity even more.

Shared by a member of The Division Elites Facebook fanpage (closed group) is a Google Maps overlay of The Division 2 map complete with landmarks, identified locations and more! You can check out the map here, and the maker said that it’ll be updated constantly after launch as more info becomes available.

While we aren’t expecting a 1:1 recreation of Washington DC, if Ubisoft Massive can come somewhat close, that in itself is already impressive.

In other The Division 2 news, don’t forget that we’re getting an open beta this March! Bad news for those who played the private beta, as your progress won’t carry over to the open beta.

Report: New Apex Legends Hero Names Unearthed via Game Files

While Apex Legends has only been out for a few weeks, it seems Respawn Entertainment already has a few new Legends (or Heroes if you’re used to calling them that) set to enter the fray soon.

Over on Reddit, user fmarton999 has posted a datamined list straight from the game’s files. Along with the known Apex Legends, uh, Legends (Heroes), there’s a few included in the list that aren’t known just yet. Check the Apex Legends new Heroes (or their names) below.

In case it wasn’t obvious enough, the names not included in the current Apex Legends roster are Wattson and Octane. If the current roster and their abilities are any indication, chances are Wattson and Octane will have some powers that are related to what we’ve seen in Titanfall 2.

If I had to hazard a guess, Wattson’s skills will involve electicity (Watt, get it?), and Octane will somehow incorporate vehicles or speed given his/her name. Of course, these could also be the names of rejected Apex Legends that weren’t tekn out, though the chances of that are highly unlikely.

For more on Apex Legends, check out the latest patch for the game that introduces a few new items. Stay tuned for an upcoming Apex Legends feature here on MP1st.

Battlefield V Flashing Screen Bug Is Being Looked Into by DICE, Talks About Combined Arms Development

While DICE’s latest patch for Battlefield V introduced a slew of improvements and additions, it seems to have introduced a new bug as well. If you’ve been playing the game after the patch rolled out this week, you might have noticed a “flashing” screen issue when you’re trying to spawn on a teammate, which, unfortunately, is still present in the game.

Over on Reddit, DICE held an AMAA (Ask Me Almost Anything) session that involved a few DICE developers fielding questions from the community, and naturally, this Battlefield 5 flashing screen issue has been bought up. According to DICE developer Florian Le Bihan (DRUNKZ23), this flashing screen issue is one of the studio’s top issues right now, and they’ll do their best to get it patched soon.

In another part of the AMAA, another user asked about the recently-released co-op mode Combined Arms, and why it was released now when there are more pressing issues in multiplayer that can be addressed. Short answer? Different teams working on different areas of the game. Here’s what North America Community Manager Jeff Braddock had to say:

You can check out the full AMAA session right here.

Have you found a workaround for the Battlefield 5 flashing issue screen bug? If so, let us know how to do it in the comments below.

The Division 2 Private Beta Progress Won’t Carry Over to the Open Beta

If you took part in The Division 2 private beta (like I did), and was planning on taking part in the upcoming open beta, you’ll have to start everything from scratch, sadly. Yes, it’s now confirmed that The Division 2 private beta progress will not carry over to the open beta!

This was confirmed by The Division 2 Live Content Manager Yannick over on Twitter in response to a tweet made by fan-ran account The Division Forums. For some odd reason, the original tweet has been pulled, but we have a screenshot of it.

I admit, this is a bummer since this means I have to re-do the missions I already tackled before just to gain the abilities, weapons and other stuff I already obtained via the private beta. That said, I do understand why Ubisoft is doing it.

We’ve also emailed Ubisoft in regards to if private beta participants will need to re-download the open beta client or if it’ll just require a patch.

For our hands-on impressions of The Division 2 private beta, check here. PC players, don’t forget that you’ll receive a free game for buying the game digitally on PC.

In case you didn’t know, Anthem will have an in-game store that will have cosmetics and other items that won’t affect game balance purchasable via the in-game currency called “Coins,” or with real world money by buying Shards Packs.

Check out our first look at the Anthem game store (via Reddit user Mo310):

Fair enough for you or priced too high? Remember: these are cosmetic items and CAN be earned just by grinding for Coins.

In other Anthem news, go check out the complete Trophies/Achievements list right here. We also posted the live-action Anthem short film directed by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp.

Here Are the Anthem Microtransaction Currency Prices for Shards Packs

It’s no secret that Anthem will have an in-game store that will have purchasable items using real world currency. In case you didn’t know, the currency used by for Anthem microtransactions are called “Shards,” and we now know how these Shards Packs cost in real world money!

Thanks to Anthem now available for Origin and Xbox One via Origin Pass and EA Access, we now know the exact prices of Anthem microtransactions! Check the images below and yes, the amount is in USD (via Reddit’s hungrybanana):

It seems players will have quite a number of options when it comes to Shards Packs. For those worried, BioWare has already mentioned that microtransactions in the game won’t have anything that might break balance, and that anything that can be bought with real world money, can be earned via grinding.

Let’s hope that BioWare can push through with their promises post-launch, and if so, they have a few good cosmetic items that might push people to buy them as a way of supporting the title’s good business model.

Stay tuned to MP1st’s review of Anthem hitting the site soon!

BioWare Says They Will Never Intentionally Make Stealth Changes to Anthem

While developers rolling out patches for games these days is considered big news given how many fixes, tweaks, and adjustments are in it that affect gameplay, there are times when a developer won’t divulge exactly what they did just to see how players would react, or even if they’d notice the changes.

Don’t expect that to happen in Anthem. Over on the Anthem subreddit, user Bistoory posted that hopefully, BioWare won’t pull any stealth nerfs, controlled RNG, Coin drops nerf or anything of the sort, and referenced the time when players found out how Bungie has been throttling XP in Destiny 2, or how Bethesda made stealth nerfs in Fallout 76.

According to Lead Producer Ben Irving, the studio will “never intentionally make stealth changes,” and their goal is to continue to be transparent.

Our goal is to continue to be transparent. We will never intentionally make stealth changes – as we get our patch note process locked in for launch it’s possible we miss things, we will try very hard not to but we hope you give us the benefit of the doubt if something goes live without an appropriate message to the community 🙂

This very reassuring news to hear, no? Let’s hope BioWare can stick to their promises.

In other Anthem news, the Anthem short film directed by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is now out, and it looks fantastic!

There’s a new fighter entering the Mortal Kombat 11 arena, and it’s none other than Jade! Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has sent out the press release featuring the Mortal Kombat 11 Jade reveal trailer, and thankfully, it includes gameplay!

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios today revealed a new Mortal Kombat 11 gameplay trailer featuring returning classic character, Jade. In life, Jade was a master assassin, famously known for both her loyal friendship to Princess Kitana and her iconic green attire. Now resurrected by an evil sorcerer, she serves the Netherrealm as an undead Revenant. Death hasn’t slowed Jade down, though. She still thrashes her enemies with her bo staff, razorrang, and patronizing put-downs.

WWE Hall of Fame Wrestler Booker T Sues Activision for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Copyright Infringement

Here’s something you don’t see or hear about everyday: Booker T, WWE Hall of Fame wrestler, is suing Activision for copyright infringement! According to the press release sent out, Booker T, whose real name is Robert Booker Tio Huffman, claims Prophet from Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is a little too similar to “G.I. Bro;” a comic book action her character Booker T created for one of his early pro wrestling personas.

According to Booker T’s lawyer Micah Dortch, “When seen side-by-side there can be no question that this character was copied from G.I. Bro. From the hair, body type and clothing, right down to facial expressions, the similarities are too profound to be an accident.” Check out the side-by-side pic of them in the image above.

Since the release of the G.I. Bor and the Dragon of Death Preview, and the G.I. Bor and the Dragon of Death comic books, Booker T has appeared at a number of events dressed as the character to promote the comics.

Dortch adds, “Booker T. has devoted a significant amount of time and money creating and organically growing his G.I. Bro character…That entrepreneurial investment should not be erased by such a blatant act of copyright infringement by a gaming juggernaut.”

I don’t know about you, but I can’t un-see Booker T from the image. He definitely looks like Prophet, no? But maybe Treyarch did create the character on their own or maybe someone was a fan of the wrestler or comic book character? Once we hear more news about this, we’ll let our readers know.

BioWare: Anthem Demo Players “Nearly Universally” Liked What They Played

Just a few weekends ago, BioWare held two demo playtests for Anthem. While the first weekend, dubbed the “VIP Demo,” had quite a few technical hiccups, the second demo weekend which was open to everyone went a lot more swimmingly.

According to BioWare Lead Producer Michael Gamble, aside from the technical issues, the Anthem demo reaction they got from players was a positive one, and mentions that the people who tried it, “nearly universally” liked what they tried.

In looking and editing all the data together, the demo was pretty successful for us on a couple things. One: The people who played the demo, more often than not, nearly universally, liked what they played. The bugs got in the way in a big way. And I think when you see the mixed sentiment coming out of people, it was usually, “Hey this game has legs, the foundation, the core, moment-to-moment gameplay feels solid, but I’m concerned about the bugs.” So we got that a lot.

Speaking of bugs, Gamble reiterated that they “felt good” about the bugs present in the demo, as most were already fixed for the final game, which they’ve mentioned previously.

And a lot of the bugs that we did see, we felt good about because they were either, A) Already fixed, or B) Things that we had not reproduced consistently on our side and now we have a pretty good reproduction case for, and then we can fix it.

Do you agree with BioWare? Did you like what you played minus the technical issues? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

If you want to read up on what we thought of the demo, here’s our hands-on impressions. Our Anthem review will be out close or around the launch date of February 22, 2019, since we want to test the game out in a full squad, and in real world conditions.

Activision Not Planning Any Major Blizzard Game to Be Released in 2019

Are you hoping we’ll see Diablo 4 this year? Maybe a new, AAA IP from Blizzard? If so, don’t hold your breath. During Activision Blizzard’s earnings call, Chief Operating Officer Coddy Johnson confirmed that the company os expecting “lower financial performance” this year.

Comparing this year to 2018, Johnson commented that Blizzard released World of Warcraft: Battle of Azeroth last year, compared to this year which has no “major frontline release.”

We expect materially lower financial performance this year. 2018 benefited from the release of World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, whereas we are not planning a major frontline release for Blizzard in 2019. And Blizzard exited 2018 with softness for its in-game revenues that will take time to stabilize and return to growth. While these factors will weigh on Blizzard’s financials this year, looking further ahead, Blizzard’s pipeline of PC, console and mobile content is richer than ever and we expect a significant addition of development resources to accelerate the pace of delivery over time. – Coddy Johnson, Activision Blizzard Chief Operating Officer

Does this mean Diablo Immortal isn’t part of this “major frontline,” or that it’ll be delayed? We can’t say for sure for now. But for those hoping to see a surprise Blizzard game come out this year, don’t get your hopes up, alright?

It’s hard to believe that Rainbow Six Siege is now in its fourth year of existence. Usually, a shooter gets released, and dies down all in a span of 12 months, but not with Rainbow Six Siege. To help mark this occasion, Ubisoft has released a Rainbow Six Siege year 4 video that highlights what has happened in all these years.

Come celebrate with us as Rainbow Six Siege launches its fourth year! Thank you to our millions of fans: for spending your time with us, helping us continually improve, and for sharing your stories along the way. This Year 4 kickoff is your story. Enjoy flashbacks of past seasons and maybe a small glimpse into the future. See more at the Six Invitational finals, February 17th 2019.

In addition to the video, Ubisoft has also announced a new line up of different editions of Rainbow Six Siege. The new editions, which are listed below, can be bought today at reduced prices.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege

The Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege edition provides access to all maps and content and reintroduces the progression system for unlocking all 20 Legacy operators. This edition will cost $19.99 and is available on PC.
Deluxe Edition
