Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC Update for Feb. 3 Brings Version 1.001 and Here’s What’s New

[summaraize]

Square Enix has released the first post-release patch for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PC, which includes stability adjustments, improvements to Steam Deck functionality, and more.

Note that this patch is only available for PC. Players should see this Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC update for February 3, which brings the game to version 1.001.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s First PC Update Now Live

Per Square Enix, here’s what’s new in today’s patch:

  • Improved overall stability.
  • Fixed graphics preset defaulting to ‘Low’ on first Steam Deck launch. Saved settings now apply on restart.
  • Anti-Aliasing Method defaults to DLSS on supported PCs.
  • Updated DirectStorage DLL.

That’s about it for this patch. In other news about the game, go check out our super short guide on how to change the game’s resolution if you’re having issues doing that.

We also ran an article last year on the five things Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth could have done better, which you’ll want to read.

If you’re still on the fence about the game, go read our review, which speaks quite highly of it. “The expanded story is riveting from start to finish, serving as essentially the Empire Strikes Back of the trilogy. Even the smallest of sidequest can add something to the lore of the world or the overall narrative that you wouldn’t expect as well, which makes you want to complete everything the game has to offer,” our reviewer notes.

[summaraize]

Codemasters has released a new update for F1 24 today that allows PC owners to export session results for some multiplayer modes. Several other graphical issues and UI improvements have also been made in update 1.17 (PS5/XSX version 1.017).

Read on to see more of the patch notes below.

[summaraize]

F1 24 Update 1.17 Includes New PC Features and More

v1.17 Patch Notes

Awarded Level 50 Podium Pass Customisation items to players for whom they were not previously unlocked correctly in Seasons 1, 2, & 3

In a handful of rare instances, players that reached Level 50 in the Podium Pass didn’t receive the correct rewards for Seasons 1, 2, and 3. For those affected, these items will be distributed via in-game mail starting February 4th following the online services update.

  • Added the ability to export session results for certain multiplayer modes (PC only)

This additional feature adds an Export Session Results option on the race results screen in Multiplayer Grand Prix and Leagues. When selected, this exports a .csv file into your F1 24 Folder in My Games. This file contains all the information from the Results screen along with all Incidents and Pit Stops which took place during the race for players and AI.

Additionally, a new option has been added to the Legal and Privacy menu in Settings in the Main Menu. Here you can turn “Show Name in Export Session Results” On or Off to decide whether to allow your Username to be seen by other players when they export session results.

  • Fixed an issue which was preventing the player’s number from appearing on the Hethel Classic Livery 2024 and Grove Classic Livery 2024.
  • Fixed an issue which was preventing sponsor decals from appearing on a driver’s suit after they’d been applied to their vehicle.
  • Fixed an issue where sponsors would not appear on the winner’s racesuit on the Multiplayer Race Results screen
  • Fixed an issue in the Graphics Setting Menu which could cause a crash for some users when rapidly changing TAA modes (PC only)
  • Fixed a rare crash for some VR users when using a Flashback or exiting Instant Replay mode (PC only)
  • Various UI improvements

When a new update is out, MP1st readers will be informed as soon as possible.

[summaraize]

DICE has released a surprise patch for Battlefield 2042 on all platforms that aims to bring some quality-of-life features. Tagged as version 8.4.1, console players will see this as Battlefield 2042 update 1.65 on last-gen (PS4, XB1) and download version 1.000.068 on current-gen (PS5, XSX), with the patch notes applying to all versions of the game.

Don’t expect any new content in this, though some much-appreciated items are slotted in.

Battlefield 2042 Gets a Surprise Quality-of-Life Patch This Feb. 3

Battlefield 2042 Update 1.49

Check out what’s new per DICE:

  • Fixed a few different situations where aiming down sights would not properly zoom in your view to the correct magnification. This could for example happen when you ADS quickly after a reload or while jumping between seats in vehicles.
  • Switching between the first and second stance of the driver seat with the IFV now has a brief cooldown time before the weapon is ready to fire.
  • Guided missiles on the IFVs will now interact with the flares like the rest of the missiles.
  • Improved Warhead ability now correctly applies the increased damage on the BMP.
  • Slight adjustment to the damage relation between the vehicle and other assets.
  • Reduced AP rounds damage relation vs medium armored vehicles.
  • Draugr now has hints for its free-look input.
  • SD. KFZ 251 vehicle now correctly tracks wheel damage when disabled.
  • Fixed an issue where under certain scenarios, the player could bypass the grapple hook cooldown.
  • Fixed an issue where The Swift Harvest Skin obscures the 1.25 Iron Sight of the Target 8T Sight on the DM7.
  • Fixed an issue where Paik’s “Gwisin” headgear flickers when used with “Quantum Shift” body.
  • The Scatter Grenade now tracks properly in the statistics tab.

Of course, the big news for Battlefield today is how EA will talk about the community testing plans for the new Battlefield game. Tune in later today at MP1st to know more about that.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Art Book Leaks on Hentai Forums a Month Before Game’s Release

[summaraize]

Nowadays, it’s common for an “Art of” book to be released alongside a major video game or soon after. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is one such title that will receive one shortly after its launch next month. Strangely, the art book, “The Art of Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” has managed to make its way online in its entirety ahead of its release.

Now might be a good time to go dark if you plan to play Assassin’s Creed Shadows next month, as the latest leak is quite significant.

The Leak Comes From an NSFW Site, Though Not Entirely Out of the Norm

The full Art of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has made its way online. The source? A hentai website known as E-hentai. As bizarre and random as that may be, the website features dozens of official art books for video games, meaning the posting itself isn’t at all that strange.

Still, the art book isn’t set to release until March 31, ten days after the official release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. It’s surprising to see it leak so early, and it’s perhaps the most significant leak for the game so far. The art book contains hundreds of concept and finalized art pieces, giving us a look at some of the locations we are expected to visit, along with yet-to-be-revealed characters and plot points in the story.

This ultimately means that spoilers are likely to surface if the book has any primary story references. Of course, we won’t share any of that here, but instead, offer a warning to those wanting to play the game completely blind. It might be a wise time to start muting words around the game or just avoiding the internet until its release. Unfortunately, that won’t be for another month, so that may be a little hard to do with how early this leak appeared.

That’s not to say that Assassin’s Creed fans aren’t used to leaks by now, as over the past years, many leaks have surfaced about the franchise, including one for a remake of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. It just sucks that something like this happened so close and yet still away from its release. Again, this is more of a warning to those wanting to avoid any potential spoilers that may come out of it.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on March 20.

EA to Reveal New Battlefield Game Community Testing on Feb. 3; DICE to Do Their Best for Transparency With Players

[summaraize]

After our report yesterday that email invites were sent to select community creators and members regarding a closed playtest for the new Battlefield game, EA has confirmed just the thing, though they’re not ready to disclose any information yet.

That time will take place tomorrow, as EA has also released a new concept art footage to go alongside the announcement.

EA Is Ready to Talk About the Upcoming Battlefield 2025 Community Testing Program

Today’s announcement from EA came with a new piece of concept art pictured above, which confirms the modern-day setting (which we already know about), and what appears to be a tank. According to Torbis, a Battlefield content creator the picture tank is an M1A2SepV3 tank.

The announcement states that fans should “tune in tomorrow” at 5 pm CET/8 am PDT/11 am EDT/12 am HKT for “more on the upcoming Battlefield community testing program.” This implies that we’ll be getting a video at the very least, which hopefully covers how players can get in the testing phase.

While we’re prepared to hear that this is an invite-only affair, we’re also hoping that we also get a proper reveal of the title and maybe a screenshot or two of the actual game.

Our own James Lara replied to Global Community Manager for Battlefield Kevin Johnson’s tweet about the announcement. He lauded DICE’s transparency towards the tail-end of Battlefield 2042’s seasonal content and asked that he hope DICE maintains this kind of transparency with the new Battlefield game.

Johnson replied, stating, “You know this is a big thing for me, and I’m quite proud of the work done for 2042 in that regard. We’ll do our best, it’s all we always can do!”

As someone who has not waned when it comes to reporting on all things Battlefield, DICE really did turn things upa  notch when communicating issues, announcements, community concerns and more in BF2042. Did they always manage to address them in time or at all? Maybe not, but what they can talk about, they did, and that’s a lot better than being left in the dark on what’s happening.

We at MP1st hope that EA doesn’t prevent the DICE developers and community managers from communicating with the community.

What we do know about the Battlefield game is that it will feature a return to a modern setting, scale back from BF2042’s 128-player battles, and see the return of more traditional classes (no more specialists!).

Tune in here tomorrow, as we’ll share all the important news EA shares regarding the new Battlefield community testing program.

DayZ Experiencing Server Issues and Downtime This Feb. 1, 2025

[summaraize]

For those trying to connect to the DayZ servers but having issues, it’s not just you, as the game’s servers are having issues right now. This was an issue a few days ago as well, and this time around, the DayZ servers have been down for hours.

Bohemia Interactive acknowledged the problem, though as of press time, the players still could not log in.

DayZ Server Issues Arise This Feb. 1, 2025

Over on Twitter/X, the official DayZ account announced, “Survivors, We are aware of the current situation concerning servers and our team is looking into it. Thanks for the reports and we will update you in this thread with further development. Thank you for your understanding and patience.”

That announcement was made a few hours ago, and the servers are still having issues. Bohemia gave an update. “The team is fully focused on solving the issue. We will update you as soon as we’ll have more details. Thank you for your patience,” the dev team said.

No timeframe has been given for fixing these server issues. What’s probably bugging players is that the servers were also having issues a few days ago. However, the outage for that one was just an hour, give or take.

If any updates are provided for the day, we’ll add them to the article. If you can somehow connect, leave your platform and where you’re located to alert your fellow survivors.

Report: New Battlefield Game Private Playtest Starting Very, Very Soon

[summaraize]

Last year, during EA’s Investor’s Day event, the publisher announced that the new Battlefield game would be undergoing large-scale community testing in “early 2025.” It seems that time is now, as we got word that the latest game in the franchise, which has yet to be given a proper title by EA, will be undergoing testing as early as next week.

EA nor DICE have yet to announce anything, and this is not a public playtest, so don’t expect any random EA email to drop.

Battlefield 6’s Closed Playtest Starting Very Soon

Next Battlefield Game battle royale

According to people familiar with the situation, NDA’s (non-disclosure agreements) are being sent out by EA to select Battlefield fans and content creators., and the playtest is said to be starting as soon as this coming week.

Further adding to the veracity of this report is content creator DANNYonPC (who wasn’t invited to the playtest), who posted a video on how one content creator slipped up and tweeted about it recently. That tweet has been pulled, and we won’t share the identity of the content creator who mentioned it to avoid putting them into more hot water.

While we’re not expecting a ton of people to be part of the playtests, this is still very good news for franchise fans, as it means the game is already in a playable state that DICE is willing to have outsiders try their hand at it.

We’re expecting an official announcement regarding the new Battlefield (not the playtest) to be made very soon. Hopefully, we’ll get a proper trailer, release window and maybe a few seconds of footage. You just know EA will be saving whatever it has for the game for its digital show in June (if the publisher decides to run one).

While there’s not a lot known about the in-development Battlefield game, EA has confirmed it will scrap Specialists and the 128-player matches that were featured in Battlefield 2042, in favor of a more traditional Battlefield experience, which fans have been asking for. It will also feature the largest development team behind a Battlefield game, as it’ll have Motive Studio, Ripple Effect, Criterion, and DICE all working on one game.

One rumor has surfaced last year which mentions the game will feature a F2P Battle Royale mode, 45 weapons and 10 maps at launch.

It’s been a rough few years for the Battlefield franchise, what with Battlefield 2042 underperforming according to EA. Before BF2042, the latest game released then was Battlefield V that was pushed out to retail in November 2018. It also didn’t perform well in terms of sales, with most series fans pointing to the Attrition mechanic and live service model as the main issues.

Stay tuned here on MP1st for the latest Battlefield news, as it seems the dam is about ready to be opened, so expect a deluge of stuff to make their way out soon-ish.

Report: Gears of War Trilogy Collection Will Be Multiplatform and Available on PS5 Day One

[summaraize]

One of the longest-running online rumors is that Xbox plans to re-release the Gears of War Trilogy in a new remaster collection. The original rumors said it would be revealed last year, though it was postponed for unknown reasons.

With Xbox essentially going full third-party and porting all their games to rival platforms, we may be getting an announcement for the Gears of War Trilogy Collection soon, as a new rumor claims it will launch on the PS5 on day one.

The Gears of War Franchise May Finally Be Playable on PlayStation

With Xbox announcing yesterday that Forza Horizon 5 would launch on the PS5 this Spring, the invisible red tape holding back Xbox IPs from appearing on PlayStation platforms was officially “torn off.” As one of the big three franchises under Xbox’s wing, the other being Halo and Gears of War, Forza Horizon 5 making the jump to PlayStation basically sealed the deal that anything was possible.

As such, a slew of new rumors has been cropping up online, the latest about the rumored Gears of War Trilogy Collection. While not officially announced, many credible sources have confirmed its existence in the past year. This latest round of rumors, though, originates from YouTuber personaand reliabel leaker eXtas1s, who says the Gears of War Trilogy Collection is coming to PlayStation 5 the same day it releases on the Xbox Series X|S and PC.

“I can talk about Gears Collection because Gears Collection has cost me a lot to corroborate its existence but it seems that it exists and I can confirm that at the moment in which Gears Collection is announced, which I don’t know when it will be but it will be announced as multiplatform day one. I repeat again. When these kinds of remasters are announced, remasters of the old Gears games are going to be able to be cross-platform play simultaneously. The only thing I haven’t been able to confirm is the launch of a Switch version, but it can be played cross-platform on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.”

Of course, take this rumor with a pinch of salt, as nothing is official until it’s official. However, given recent decisions on porting games to other platforms, we’d say this is likely a safe bet, if anything. Of note, we were told of the Gears of War Collection last year, though our source didn’t mention that it would be appearing on PS5 the same day.

It’s ironic enough that the idea of Gears of War on PlayStation isn’t old. Gears of War 3 was reportedly being considered for the PS3, with a playable build leaking a few years back.  Obviously, those plans never went through, with the series remaining an Xbox-exclusive, and being a flagship title for the platform. With these rumors now growing stronger every day, we’d say the odds are good that the series is coming to PlayStation.

GLOBAL

Join on Friends

  • Addressed an issue that prevented players from joining their friend’s party due to an error that stated they were on a different version.

Split Screen

  • Addressed an issue that immediately kicked Player 2 when attempting to enable Split Screen.

Ranked Play Cross-Play

At the start of Season 02, we implemented new Cross-Play options for Ranked Play that allow players on console to select the platform pool(s) they wish to matchmake with.

We have been keeping a close eye on the conversation surrounding this topic and wanted to share some additional details on how these settings interact with party members who are on different platforms.

  • Players in a party who all belong to the same console platform will matchmake with the party leader’s preferred cross-play settings.
  • Players who have selected “Cross-Play Off” and create a mixed platform party that includes a different console platform will have their cross-play settings temporarily adjusted to “Cross-Play On (Consoles Only)” to enable matchmaking. This temporary adjustment enables matchmaking for the duration of the mixed platform party, and disbanding this party will result in preferred matchmaking settings being restored.
  • Players who have selected “Cross-Play Off” and create a mixed platform party with a PC player will have their cross-play settings temporarily adjusted to “Cross-Play On.” This enables matchmaking for the duration of the mixed platform party, and disbanding this party will result in preferred matchmaking settings being restored.
  • Reminder: Adjusting Cross-Play settings may negatively impact matchmaking queue times.

  • We are investigating an issue where “Cross-Play On (Consoles Only) and “Cross-Play Off” settings are being reset when relaunching Call of Duty.

GENERAL

  • Buy Station locations across Urzikstan have been updated.
  • Tracker is now properly unrestricted in Ranked Play.
  • The LTV Vehicle has been disabled while we investigate an issue.

RANKED PLAY

In addition, please be aware that we are investigating a known issue where “Cross-Play On (Consoles Only) and “Cross-Play Off” settings are being reset when relaunching Call of Duty.

WEAPONS

BUG FIXES

  • Fixed an issue that prevented players from joining their friend’s party due to an error that stated they were on a different version.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the game to crash if players attempted to join a Custom Match hosted by a player on a different platform.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented players from hearing enemy Self Revive audio.
  • Fixed an issue causing players to move at slower than intended speeds on ascenders.
  • Fixed an issue where some players would see the Prestige Master splash in the AAR after every match.
  • Fixed an issue where Prestige Challenges were not populating the nearest-to-completion list on the Challenge Tracker.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented tiers from being displayed on the Challenge Tracker.
  • Fixed an issue where pinned challenges on the Challenge Tracker were not displaying correctly.
  • Fixed an issue where the Challenge Tracker would not automatically cycle to the next page after 8 seconds.
  • Fixed an issue that caused matches on Rebirth Island to sometimes differ in skybox lighting.
  • Fixed an issue where XP Earned and BlackCell XP bonus were flipped in the AAR.

If you still haven’t bought Black Ops 6 yet, it’s currently on sale as part of the PlayStation Store’s Critics’ Choice promotion.

Once Activision releases another patch, we’ll let our readers know.

Shang-Chi Star Simu Liu Wants to Develop Sleeping Dogs Sequel and Movie

[summaraize]

Not all games achieve massive commercial success, but some develop a loyal fanbase that refuses to forget them. Sleeping Dogs, the 2012 open-world action game developed by now-defunct United Front Games and published by Square Enix, is one of them. While a sequel has seemed unlikely for years, there is now fresh hope—not just for a new game, but also for a Sleeping Dogs movie with a popular Hollywood actor involved.

A Sleeping Dogs movie was first announced in 2017, with famous Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen set to play the main character. Some pictures from the production were even shared, but Yen recently confirmed in a statement to Polygon that the movie was canceled after years of delays.

Simu Liu Is Working to Bring Sleeping Dogs to the Big Screen

sleeping dogs movie sequel

Now, Simu Liu has shown interest in the project, saying that he is working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen. When a fan asked him about it on X (formerly Twitter), Liu confirmed that he is trying to make the movie happen.

Although the project has not yet received an official greenlight, Liu has been clear about his strong desire to get it approved. He admitted that convincing movie executives who don’t know the game has been tough, but he stays hopeful because of the huge support from Sleeping Dogs fans.

He said, “So few film projects make it from pitch phase to greenlight. Pitching execs who don’t understand the game has been tiring. Everyone’s overwhelming love of Sleeping Dogs here has really given us life! First a movie, then a sequel game for everyone… that’s always been the dream.”

While the focus is currently on the movie, Liu has also made it clear that his ultimate goal is to revive the franchise, starting with the film and hopefully leading to a Sleeping Dogs sequel game.

For now, fans can only wait to see if Liu’s dream comes true. Will Sleeping Dogs finally get its long-awaited sequel and movie? Only time will tell.

Killing Floor 3 shoots its way out this March 25 on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Hopefully, we’ll get a roadmap of the post-release plans from Tripwire soon.

Fortnite Update 4.54 Launches for v33.30; Delivers OG Chapter 1 Season 2

[summaraize]

Epic Games is ready to dial it back in Fortnite, but before that happens, players will need to download Fortnite update 4.54 on all platforms. This patch brings the game to version 33.30, and is for OG Chapter 1 Season 2!

Alongside the patch, Epic Games has pulled the servers for maintenance and temporary downtime. This starts at 4 am ET/1 am PT/5 pm HKT. While there’s no specified time on how long this downtime starts, it should last for at least 2-3 hours per the usual server outages of the game.

Chapter 1 Season 2 Arrives in Fortnite Update 4.54

Go Full Tilt into Fortnite OG Chapter 1 Season 2!

Grab your Glider and jump off the Battle Bus as Fortnite OG enters Chapter 1 Season 2, bringing back beloved POIs like Tilted Towers and Shifty Shafts! The days of the Fort Knights are upon us again, so rise to the challenge and fight valiantly with upcoming loot like the Boogie Bomb and Minigun. Chapter 1 Season 2 starts today and ends March 25, 2025 ET.

Old Haunts Return – Chapter 1 Season 2 POIs

Chapter 1 Season 2 reintroduces POIs from the classic Chapter 1 Season 2, so get ready to cause HOA complaints at Snobby Shores once again!

Tilted Towers

Let’s be honest, you’re gonna drop here first. Boasting towering high-rises, Tilted Towers is a magnet for both Chests and danger! Take refuge and loot up in the slew of apartment complexes and offices, or brave the streets of the concrete jungle.

Fortnite OG Tilted Towers

Junk Junction

This scrapyard paradise is a treasure trove of loot, but watch out — every car stack and rubbish pile in Junk Junction could be obscuring a sneaky opponent! Even if the coast is clear, you’ll still be under the watchful eye of the Metal Llama.

Fortnite OG Junk Junction

Haunted Hills

Lurking just below Junk Junction is Chapter 1 Season 2’s creepiest spot, Haunted Hills! This dilapidated POI is full of abandoned tombs and crumbling architecture, and enemy players will only add to the scare.

Snobby Shores

At Snobby Shores, expect high-rolling residences and enough loot to keep up with the Joneses and then some. Can you find the underground bunker in this opulent enclave?

Fortnite OG Snobby Shores

Shifty Shafts

This isn’t your average mining facility! Delve deep into the ground and explore the labyrinth of tunnels that await. The close-quarters combat of Shifty Shafts isn’t for the faint of heart, but there’s always a chance to strike (figurative) gold if luck is on your side!

(Sky)Dive into a Vintage Loot Pool

OG Chapter 1 Season 2 will expand the loot pool with gear from the classic Chapter 1 Season 2 being added on a regular basis:

  • Small Shield Potion (live now!) – Need a quick boost to your defense? This is your go-to drink, offering 25 Shield each ‘til you’re at 50!
  • Multi-Surface Damage Trap (live now!) – The spike is mightier than the sword. Place the upgraded Damage Trap on a floor, ceiling, or wall to ambush unsuspecting enemies!
  • Boogie Bomb – Throw this funky orb into the fray to unleash a momentary, disco-fueled dance party on your foes. Let the rhythm take over and turn the tide of battle in style!
  • Suppressed Pistol – The ideal weapon for stealthy attacks. Be quick on the draw and even quicker on the reload to make the most of this sneaky sidearm!
  • Cozy Campfire – Need to heal up after a frantic fight? Choose a place for this benign Trap and restore your HP for up to 25 seconds at 2 HP per second. A great opportunity to tell your friends a quick story!
  • Chug Jug – The ultimate lifeline in a firefight, this whopping beverage takes quite a bit to consume, but grants full Health and full Shield. Just make sure you’re not interrupted before you chug it all!
    • You can drink the Chug Jug while moving. “Chug along,” as they say!
  • Minigun – With no magazine limit, this weapon is the perfect tool for razing buildings or going on a haphazard offensive. Fire away for too long, though, and you’ll become vulnerable with the Minigun’s prolonged cooldown period!
  • Crossbow – Swap bullets for arrows. Fun fact: The Crossbow was first introduced as Cupid’s Crossbow before becoming the Crossbow in Season 3!
  • Impulse Grenade – Launch yourself to outmaneuver incoming attacks, or end an elevated skirmish by sending enemies to the ground below towards elimination!

This Season’s OG Pass also has an unlockable alt Style for each Outfit, and for many of the accessories! The Pass will be available to progress in until the Season ends March 25, 2025 ET.

At the start of the experiment, all test subjects must pick up a potion from the dispenser in Mourndale Courtyard. But not all the potions work as intended: some test subjects will become vampires! If you’re a vampire, hunt down the other test subjects and make them vampires too. Or if you’re a survivor, use your invisibility to stay safe ‘til time runs out!

All test subjects will be awarded Creds for their contributions to supernatural science. Subjects who don’t become a vampire will also get the Vamp Champ Trophy Decor item, courtesy of Bobom Milk Tea.

A day after BioWare announced that they were downsizing and relocating staffers to other parts of EA, several developers have come forward and confirmed that they’d been laid off.

BioWare initially said the downsizing was due to not needing the full support of the full studio, though they left the part out of some developers losing their jobs.

Mass Effect 5 Development Continues, Though Without Key Members

The news comes from several developers who shared their exit from the studio on social media. As pointed out by IGN, BioWare’s editors Karin West-Weekes and Ryan Cormier, Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s narrative designer and lead writer Trick Weekes, producer Jen Cheverie, and senior systems designer Michelle Flamm have all confirmed their departure. These are just the big names that we know of, with more expected to have been laid off.

BioWare previously issued this statement in yesterday’s blog concerning the downsizing, leaving out that layoffs were occurring and alluding that they’ve been finding work within EA for those who were removed from the studio.

“In keeping with our fierce commitment to innovating during the development and delivery of Mass Effect, we have challenged ourselves to think deeply about delivering the best experience to our fans. We are taking this opportunity between full development cycles to reimagine how we work at BioWare.

Given this stage of development, we don’t require support from the full studio. We have incredible talent here at BioWare, and so we have worked diligently over the past few months to match many of our colleagues with other teams at EA that had open roles that were a strong fit.”

2024 was one of the worst years for workers in the gaming industry, as it saw countless layoffs and studio closures throughout the year. 2025 doesn’t seem to be fairing any better, as we’ve already had three studios close their doors permanently at the start of this month.

We can’t say we’re surprised, considering Dragon Age: The Veilguard did end up selling less than 50% of what EA expected from it. It’s becoming more and more common for layoffs to occur nowadays in the gaming industry, especially after missing target numbers for a new game. This sadly won’t be the last time we have to report about this, as we expect even more studio closures and layoffs to occur throughout the year.

Avowed Review Embargo Confirmed for February 13; Already in Reviewer Hands

[summaraize]

Although Xbox has been a little light on marketing its next big game, Avowed, they seem confident in its release as they’ve sent out review codes two weeks before launch, with the review embargo lifting the same day as early access.

A review period similar to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

Avowed Review Embargo Lifts the Same Day Everyone Gets to Play It In Early Access

As confirmed by many online creators and outlets across social platforms, Avowed is now available for review. According to many social postings, reviews will be available on February 13th at 9 a.m. ET/3 p.m. BST. This gives reviewers two weeks of access, with reviews available the same day early access begins. Screenshots, including one provided to us, were shared online, showing the game’s main title screen.

Avowed was originally supposed to launch last year, but due to the busy holiday season, it was delayed to February 2025. With Xbox being rather quiet about the game, many started to assume the worst: another delay was going to happen. But with it in the hands of reviewers, we can probably put those worries to rest, as this essentially confirms that the game has gone “gold” or, if not, should be going gold soon.

In development by Obisidian Entertainment, Avowed is a first-person fantasy RPG, with the story detailed as: “You are the envoy of Aedyr, a distant land, sent to investigate rumors of a spreading plague throughout the Living Lands – an island full of mysteries and secrets, danger and adventure, and choices and consequences, and untamed wilderness. You discover a personal connection to the Living Lands and an ancient secret that threatens to destroy everything. Can you save this unknown frontier and your soul from the forces threatening to tear them asunder?”

Avowed will officially launch on February 18 for all non-early access buyers and will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Marvel Rivals “Kraken” Boss and “Infinity Crisis” Mode Spotted in Data Files; Here’s an Early Look

[summaraize]

With every patch released for Marvel Rivals, it seems NetEase keeps adding more files for upcoming heroes, modes and more. This time around, it seems the developers added something massive in the form of a boss character.

Spotted in the game’s files is what appears to be a new mode called “Infinity Crisis” and alongside it, there’s a massive, multi-tentacled Kraken-like boss.

Could Marvel Rivals Be Adding a PvE Mode?

Marvel Rivals Closed Beta Review

While NetEase hasn’t announced anything, the datamined content seems to indicate that a PvE (Player vs. Environment) mode is in development. The datamine comes from reliable leaker X0X_Leaks, who shared gameplay footage of the upcoming boss and mode.

The footage you’re about to see below are in-development, and as such, are in a rough state. The textures, animation and more are obviously a work in progress, so don’t judge it until we see the final thing.

Again, we want to stress that none of this has been announced or confirmed. For all we know, NetEase could be testing some stuff around and left the game code. Unless the studio officially announces it, keep this in your back pocket for now. But a proper PvE mode with a boss to fight does seem intriguing given the characters in Marvel Rivals have abilities that lend well to a co-op game.

A PvP game adding a PvE element isn’t something new, either. Possibly the most popular (but not the best example to use) is Marvel Rivals’, uh, rival, Overwatch. Blizzard’s justification for releasing Overwatch 2 was because of the planned PvE mode. However, after suffering various hardships in development, the mode was declared canceled last year — much to the dismay of fans.

In terms of what’s official, The Thing and Human Torch are on the way in the mid-season update for the game, though there’s no date for it yet. While more characters, modes, cosmetics are on the way, don’t expect role queue to be part of the plan, as NetEase thinks not having it will lead to a “richer gaming experience for everyone.”

Yo Ho Whooaa! Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Goro Pirates Anthem Has Been Released

[summaraize]

Well, I didn’t expect to have a musical sequel to Majima Construction Pirate on my 2025 card, and yet, here we are, seven years after the original anthem with a brand-new ahead of the release of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.

Get those pirate getups ready because Goro Pirates Anthem will have you singing alongside Matthew Mercer (Majima’s English voice actor) in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Goro Pirates Anthem.

A New Anthem Perfect For Your Pirate Adventure

Alright, SEGA, you didn’t have to COOK this hard for the game’s marketing; we were already convinced to get it from our hands-on with it at TGS last year. It’s pretty funny they got Matthew Mercer to go along with this, though, considering how the franchise has always featured karaoke mini-games and him being the voice of Majima for the English dubs, we aren’t surprised.

Here it is for those who haven’t seen the original Majima Construction Anthem.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii launches on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox on February 21, 2025.

Sniper Elite: Resistance Review – Take the Shot

[summaraize]

The Sniper Elite series dates back nearly two decades, though there was a seven-year gap between the first and second entries. Since the second entry, the series has received a new game every few years, continuing now with the all-new Sniper Elite: Resistance. While it may technically be a spinoff of the mainline numbered series, Sniper Elite: Resistance is pretty much everything you’d expect from one, complete with plenty of the classic x-ray kill shots that fans have come to know the franchise for over the years.

A Parallel Story

Rather than play as series lead American-British sniper Karl Fairburne, Sniper Elite: Resistance moves further from the front lines of the war to Vichy France after the country’s initial defeat against Germany. However, the new lead protagonist is not entirely unfamiliar, as those who have played co-op in previous outings should recognize Harry Hawker. Hawker is a British soldier and a member of the Special Operations Executives (SOE) like Fairburne. He is not alone in this mission either, as he has a confidant in Morris Ahmed, who is always on the other end of the radio when Hawker is in the field. Their conversations during the game add some life to the missions that otherwise might have started to feel a bit too isolated.

The main plot of Sniper Elite: Resistance takes place parallel to Sniper Elite 5’s story, and the SOE uncovers secret super weapons created by the Germans that you must find a way to destroy or stop from being distributed at the very least. This means that each mission typically has some sabotage requirement, whether thwarting plans by stealing information quietly or having to blow up armored trains, including the top secret Zugwerfer. There is also the looming threat of the Kleine Blume that you must stop, which is a chemical weapon that even Adolf Hitler banned the use of in battle, but certain segments of the Nazi regime want to use it to push things in the Axis’ favor here unless you can stop them. Hearing about the different elements of the war is very interesting here and really makes the story captivating to keep up with.

Even as a spinoff, Sniper Elite: Resistance has much of the makeup of a mainline game, almost to a fault sometimes. The game’s main focus is obviously on the campaign, which is made up of nine total missions for you to complete. These can vary greatly in how long it takes to beat depending on the playstyle of the player, but the general idea is for it to take about an hour or so per mission besides the shorter opening mission and the super short final mission.

For anyone who has played a Sniper Elite game in recent years, such as Sniper Elite 5, you already will know almost exactly what to expect with the gameplay in Sniper Elite: Resistance. As the name indicates, the focus of the gameplay here is always on the sniper rifle, which is rather unique for shooters that usually have that as a more niche class. You will always have a trusty sniper rifle at your side, as well as two other weapons that you can switch back and forth between, including rifles and sidearms. Enemy weapons can also be picked up and used temporarily, but they are dropped as soon as you switch to another weapon or run out of ammo. This quickly became a frustration where I would accidentally drop the enemy weapon while interacting with something and having to find it again and pick it up, when it would have worked better if we could actually hold the one in our inventory at all times instead of having to drop it continuously.

The signature of the Sniper Elite series has been the gruesome x-ray shots when killing enemies with a sniper and occasionally other weapons. When getting the kill shot, the game will zoom in with an x-ray to the point of impact and show the bullet rip through the entire body, whether that may be the head, eyeball, kidney, or even testicle. While this could be a little over the top for some just looking for a basic shooter, this can be disabled in the settings menu. There isn’t really anything new here in regards to this feature, but I can’t say that I didn’t love seeing it every time I managed to pull it off in the game, especially if it was a very impressive shot.

While some may be looking for major innovation to push the series forward, Sniper Elite: Resistance instead provides players with more of what they loved about the last game. This isn’t exactly an awful thing, though some fresh ideas would have been nice to see here. Still, these are likely being saved for the next numbered entry.

The setup within each mission is pretty much the same, where there are a series of primary objectives for you to complete that are required to unlock exfiltration from the mission and move on to the next. Besides that, there are a few side quests that you can choose to partake in that will affect your final mission ranking. Outside the first and final missions, each mission has one to three optional objectives for you to complete that are marked as blue on the level map. These typically involve you sabotaging or destroying something related to the mission, often with plenty of enemies nearby to try and stop you. There is also a special assassination task found in each of these missions as well, where you simply have to kill a specific person from the kill list found in that stage. The general area for this is also noted on the map and is generally surrounded by lots of other enemies to keep you from getting to your target easily.

By completing the main story mission, you will earn one star for the stage. Another is earned by completing all of the available optional objectives, as well as a third and final star for getting the kill list assassination completed. Even though the kill list tasks have extra kill challenges that require you to kill the person with a specific type of weapon or object, this does not affect the star rating. On top of the star rating, there is more to be found in each mission, with a number of collectibles scattered around. Outside of the second level that has 20, stages three through eight have 19 collectibles to be found, including personal letters, classified documents, hidden items, stone eagles, and workbenches. Keep an eye out wherever you are to see these, and you will likely end up finding at least a handful of them just by happenstance during each mission. For the rest, you’re going to have to look hard to find them by searching every nook and cranny. The most important of these to look for are the seven propaganda posters scattered throughout the game that help unlock missions in another game mode.

For completing the missions in Sniper Elite: Resistance, one of the key elements here is choice in how you want to take on each task. The main option is obviously to be stealthy and snipe from afar and try to be as quiet as possible as you make your way across the map. However, if you want to go Rambo and take on the army yourself loudly, feel free to do so, though I would not recommend it. In many parts of the missions, more reinforcements will be called upon you when you are spotted by sounding alarms, which you need to disable quickly if you don’t want to be overwhelmed by enemies. The Field Report at the end of each mission gives you a breakdown of how you played that specific mission via a four-quadrant grid that includes Lethal, Non-Lethal, Stealth, and Assault. I tended to stay on the Lethal Stealth side on most levels, as I found myself sneaking around using my knife to quietly kill any enemies I could, as well as arming them with explosives to surprise other enemies that came nearby while also using my sniper most often from afar if I could. The game also offers a three-pronged skill tree that you can use to level up in certain ways, such as health upgrades or being able to toss back live grenades. Choosing options that fit with your playstyle is very helpful here, though you should be able to unlock quite a number of them from each category in your playthrough anyway.

Carrying over from the last few entries in the series, Sniper Elite: Resistance includes campaign co-op where you can play with a friend or a random player online. This is something that is a cool feature to have in the game once again, though your mileage may vary depending on your co-op partner. Having a great partner can really elevate the experience, while a lackluster one can tank the experience entirely and make you wish you were playing solo.

Another feature brought back again here is Invasions, where you can jump into another player’s campaign and wreak havoc by playing as a sniper trying to take down the playable character or have another player do the same to you instead. Those who want to focus exclusively on the campaign can turn this feature off, but it definitely does have a level of intensity when you can be attacked at any time by a real player. This can be done through a random match or an invite code if you want to join a friend’s game.

As aforementioned, finding the seven Propaganda Posters in the campaign will unlock missions in a special game mode known as the Propaganda Challenge. These are small stages that you can play repeatedly, where you face off against enemies to test your skills in one of three categories: stealth, combat, or sniping. The goal is to kill as many enemies as possible within a time limit using limited weapons you are given, even with the ability to earn extra time within the challenge. I felt like these were good ancillary additions to keep players interested, though I do not think it was a good idea to lock the missions beyond collectibles you have to search to find in the campaign. Survival mode is back again, though it almost feels unnecessary with how Propaganda Challenges are utilized.

The last game mode available in Sniper Elite: Resistance is multiplayer, which always has a place in any shooter. However, this is far from the main attraction, unlike in something like Call of Duty. The online multiplayer has some interesting modes like No Cross, where literally nothing can be done but sniping due to the barrier in the middle, but it’s still pretty run-of-the-mill multiplayer. Between free-for-all, team match, and squad match, you have some options at your disposal here to play around with that should provide some additional hours of fun.

Besides the lack of innovation, the biggest flaw in Sniper Elite: Resistance is the presence of bugs and glitches that were frustrating at times. A few of these were boundary glitches where my character should have been able to move through an area but was seemingly blocked by an invisible wall that should not have been there, with some walkable surfaces already not being able to be traversed that looked like they should be walkable. Climbing up ladders and vines was also an adventure sometimes, with the inability to jump down when it should have been available or just not being able to climb on at all being an issue. Crouching or crawling through gaps also had its fair share of issues, often requiring you to stand up again and then back to crouch or prone to properly make it through. These collision issues also carried over to interacting with some objects at times, often requiring you to move back and forth to be in just the right spot to interact.

Enemy AI was also questionable at times in the game, especially when it came to investigating sounds. One of the gameplay elements is to be able to toss bottles or set off nearby traps to get the attention of enemies and distract them. However, there were times when I would throw a bottle right near an enemy with no sound-dampening effects going on nearby, and they acted like nothing happened whatsoever. This was something that happened pretty sporadically, though, so it worked well most of the time. I also noticed weird paths taken by the AI at times, but that’s more nitpicking than anything else.

Verdict

Rather than pushing to take things to the next level from Sniper Elite 5, developer Rebellion Developments instead just gives us more of what we liked in that game, now with a new coat of paint in Sniper Elite: Resistance. Besides the new protagonist and setting, the gameplay is essentially the same as you remember it, though that gameplay is still very satisfying at its core, especially the x-ray shots. While there were some bugs that hampered the experience, and it did feel more like an expansion than an entirely new game, Sniper Elite: Resistance is still well worth giving a try for fans of the series and shooter fans alike.

Score: 7.5/10

Pros:

  • Solid story
  • Enjoyable mission tasks
  • Gratifying x-ray shots

Cons:

  • Too similar to Sniper Elite 5
  • Inability to store enemy weapons
  • Needs more polish
