Resident Evil Village Review – Winters is Coming

Capcom’s latest mainline entry in the Resident Evil franchise is here with Resident Evil Village. While the game continues RE7’s first-person viewpoint, does it have the same charm? Will franchise fans embrace the non-zombie enemies revealed in the trailers? What is Chris doing and why does he seem like a bad guy now? Lots of answers, and while we’re not going to spoil anything, we’re going to talk about the most important question of all: is Resident Evil Village worth a buy and a playthrough? Read on for our review.

Trouble in Paradise

Trying to move on from the events of Resident Evil 7, Ethan, his Wife Mia, and their newborn daughter Rose find themselves living a new life just outside of a small village located in Romania. Much has happened in the last three years since the family were taken under the protection of Chris Redfield and company, and while things seem all happy on the surface for the family, there are some clear cracks in the relationship due to the previous traumatization the couple went through.

With the couple slowly working on moving forward, all appears to be going right. However, as with all Resident Evil games, things quickly take a turn for the worse as the family finds themselves in the midst of a nightly raid from none other than their protector, Chris Redfield. With Mia shot dead, and Rose taken away, Ethan finds himself in yet another rescue mission, pointing his way to a village close by that has a mysterious castle overlooking it.

Setting off with a more action geared experience than RE7, the RE Village campaign will take players through a grandeur amount of exhilarating set pieces. With the map broken up by four main areas, each controlled by a member of the Dimitrescu, a mysterious family that has long ruled over the area since the medieval times.

Interesting enough, Village seems to be sticking with the family theme that RE7 presented, though it certainly doesn’t hit as well as it’s predecessor.

This is perhaps my biggest gripe with Village, as while it more than makes up for it, the villains feel “underwhelmingly” developed in comparison to RE7. Village ret-hreads on the family theme, so naturally there’s a comparison to draw up, and while I’ll admit to not liking RE7 that much (mostly because of the visuals,) I’ll say that the game did an excellent job at building characters and giving you a reason to fear them.

With Jack hunting you throughout the game and the rest of the Baker family lying in wake, there was always tension around every corner. I still remember the feeling of dreadfulness when I saw Marguerite Baker crawling around like spider and hanging from the ceiling, or the multiple instances Jack just appeared out of nowhere, no matter how many times we knocked him down. The villain’s in RE7 truly felt menacing, a real threat in the game’s world.

Village lacks that kind of tension, despite having some terrifying moments. By no means does that make the story bad, far from it, but those expecting some deep character building with constant lingering fear, you’ll probably end up being disappointed by the small amount of time you actually spend with each main villain. And this to me is a damn shame, because each area that houses these bosses are so much fun to play through.

Despite my criticism above, I found the way the bosses were handled in Village to be more entertaining. Capcom leans deeply into each villains personality, giving you some of the series best and note worthy moments. This is perhaps where Village draws it’s biggest contrast to RE7, as noted before, its a more action-based game. Fans can take that as they will, but I certainly feel that the team has knocked it out of the park and provides one of the most entertaining RE game to date because of it.

As for Ethan, the main character, I was a bit surprise by how oblivious he was to everything going on around him. Compared to RE7, he’s a lot more talkative this time around, but he may as well have not been because there is just so little he bothers to question. So much shit happens to Ethan in the game that it became laughable at how he even survived, but of course it was all playing into the game’s story. Even so, there are just some things that happen to him that he doesn’t even bother asking why, and when the time finally comes for an explanation, he’s so out there as to not to believe it himself despite everything. It got a bit annoying because we, as a player, could tell there is something up, but the guy who has his hand literally mauled in half only for a few seconds later using it to push barricades just shrugs it off as if that’s a normal thing to happen in his everyday life. There are far worse things that end up happening, and his response is usually just to ignore it and keep moving.

Still, despite it’s story flaws, Village does ensure to excel in every other department.

Bullets and Puzzles

I had my doubts when Capcom decided that they wanted to make Resident Evil into a first-person shooter with Resident Evil 7. Known for it’s third-person combat, the change in gameplay was certainly a big one that has had many fans divided since the release. With Village, the studio is once again continuing with the first-person combat, and truthfully, it feels like a great step forward.

The gun play is far more snappier, with aiming and shooting feeling superbly satisfying. With my shotgun at my side, I felt unbeatable, even in moments when I was in dire need of ammunition, which happens quite a lot.

And on top of the improved movement, Village also features the ability to upgrade weapon stats, an old feature that has been absent from the series for some time now. Enemies may feel spongier during your first encounter, but by the time you have earned yourself enough credit to pump into better stats, you’ll find yourself easily popping heads off with just a push of a button.

To even add more to our experience, since we are playing on the PS5, there is also the added DualSense feature, which the studio has mastered. The triggers react different for every gun, and while it does take time to get used to compared to other games we have played, the feeling of the triggers kicking back is certainly not one that ever gets old. They’re put to full use in Village, and I highly recommend everyone to play with them turned on.

Of course the combat has always been just part of the fun in Resident Evil, as it wouldn’t be one if it didn’t mean there weren’t any puzzles along the way. These come in plenty and serve up as the main attraction of exploring the world. With many secrets to hide throughout, Village is jammed pack with head twisting puzzles that’ll truly feel challenging the first time playing.

There is plenty to backtrack as well as the game also offers special hunts where you need to track and kill certain animals in order to earn permanent stat boosters from Duke the merchant. There are even hidden chests that have huge rewards, and given that the game is rather short, the added replay value is certainly a welcome one.

Compare to past RE games, Village has a huge feeling of freedom with it’s large hub world. It helps that it’s also a very interesting, and beautiful world to explore.

A Picture Under the Full Moon

From a dusk =-gloomed village filled with nightmarish fiends, to a castle with never-ending awes of beauty, Village embalms itself in a thick richness of variety like no other Resident Evil before it.

Taking huge inspiration from Resident Evil 4, and combining it with the gorgeous 1800’s Victorian aesthetics, there is a lot to love about the world of Village.  Upon our venture, we were quickly swept away by the visual showcase, with every scene beautifully crafted. I thought the two Resident Evil Remakes were graphical galore of what the Resident Evil Engine could do before, but after playing Village it’s easy to see just how much more the studio can push.

I was a bit worried about the game being a cross-gen title, but that feeling quickly diminished within the opening act. The character models in particular are far better detailed, and look more realistic, a huge complaint I had with RE7, and even for the remakes. I was absolutely blown away, especially with Chris Redfield’s newer model which suits him a whole lot more than his RE7 one.

Environments however are the real draw for Village as they are all well designed, and filled with so much details. It all blends in so beautifully, and the lighting work is some of the best I’ve seen in a game.

It’s hard not to stop and just take everything in for a perfect snap shot.

There is so much I want to show in this review, and despite not being under an embargo for it, it’s really something everyone should experience themselves.

Now this being a cross-gen title, the big question is how well does it perform across all the platforms? Our lead platform was the PS5, which performance is superbly smooth in the frame-rate department, especially with ray-tracing running. It was hard to take notice to any of the dips we experienced, as it mostly part felt like a locked 60fps. Still, given that the system is hard to get it would be a tragedy if the last-gen versions didn’t offer a playable experience, and thankfully they do.

Playing on both the base PS4 and PS4 Pro, Resident Evil Village takes a bit of a dive in the visual department, but makes up with a smooth experience. On hardware that is over 7 years old now, that’s pretty impressive all things considering how well it fits next-gen consoles. No short stick is drawn here for last gen owners, which is great because the world of Village offers so much when it comes to it’s technical feats. It certainly will be a title that gets talked for years to come.

Verdict

While I don’t believe that Village has the greatest story for a Resident Evil game, everything else about it helps makes it standout as one of the more worthier titles. With stellar combat, and a world that is easy to get lost in with it’s beauty, Village feels like a huge step for the franchise. I am a bit bum that there is no VR support like RE7, but this did allow the team to really give the game their all on a technical level. It feels like a true next-gen experience, even on the older systems. Plenty to love about Village, and with multiple playthroughs under my belt, I just don’t see how anyone can skip out on this gem. To me, this feels like the evolutionary step that Resident Evil 2 took from the first game, only for Resident Evil 7. The first-person perspective is proven, and here to stay for the long haul.

SCORE: 8.5/10

Pros:

  • Gameplay feels satisfying, especially with the added upgrade system.
  • Village has a large world that offers a lot of replay value through collectibles and secrets.
  • Visually stunning, nails the Victorian atmosphere.
  • Boss fights are great and well worth the experience.
  • Mercenary Mode is fun.

Cons:

  • There is no real game threat, all the villains, although fun to fight, could have used more character development.
  • The game pacing feels rushed, mostly due to the reason before. Some story reveals just don’t hit the way they should.
  • Ethan as a character is completely oblivious to everything around him that it becomes annoying.

Call of Duty Teases Rambo, John McClane

“Live for nothing or die for something.” Rambo enters Call of Duty, raging and muscles flexing, as he is revealed to be the newest skin that will be available on May 20, 2021 for Call of Duty: Warzone, and we presume, Black Ops Cold War.

The iconic movie hero is the latest star that players can get their hands on and live its persona. In a tweet, Call of Duty teases a video showing Rambo, in his signature bandana, as he stares down a running opponent. He has his bow and arrow on hand as he fires the blazing arrow. The short teaser places in all caps “Become War” and reveals a May 20 launch date.

Recently, John McClane was teased to join Call of Duty after the same account unveiled a poster with the title, “Nakatomi Duct Cleaning,” referencing Die Hard.

The string of potential skins are from movies released in the 90s, with Rambo in 1982 and Die Hard in 1988. The 80s throwback can be tied to the recent Call of Duty: Warzone event that brought Verdansk back to the 80s.

Are you going to get the skin and feel like Rambo on the battlefield or are you going to “Yipee-Kay-Yay” your way to the top with John McClane?

While there’s no exact date yet for when the reveal is, this year’s digital E3 is happening, and EA is once again hosting an EA Play event as well. Chances are, we’ll see a reveal before EA Play, with EA’s digital event the place where the publisher will unveil some actual gameplay.

Even while the official reveal is in June, there have been purported leaked stuff about the game. We got a few leaked screenshots, and even a leaked audio snippet of the reveal trailer (allegedly)

.Sit tight, Battlefield fans! We know June is still quite far off, but we’re almost there.

The Coalition Talks About Next Gears Game, Moves to Unreal Engine 5

The future of the Gears of War series will now upgrade to the next series Unreal engine technology, as The Coalition Talks About the next Gears game, and moving to Unreal Engin 5.

Making the announcement at the official Gears 5 website, the team has stated that they are looking to develop the best-looking games with the best cutting edge tools currently available in the market — including the next Gears game and that is why they have announced that they are proceeding with developing their new batch of games using Unreal Engine 5 for the next gen market.

As we look to future games, we’re excited to start shifting our resources to next-gen development using Unreal Engine 5. Gears of War has always been at the front of Unreal Engine development – as a breakout 720p title for Xbox 360 through last year’s 120FPS multiplayer update for Xbox Series X|S – and we’re excited to continue that tradition by developing on UE5 for multiple new projects in the coming years.

Originally released on PC and Xbox One on September 2019, Gears 5 actually made the transition to next generation with a port released for the Xbox Series X|S this past November. The Coalition team looks to strengthen their upcoming next content with Operation 7 and 8 with the power of Unreal Engine 5, and that will be a sight to behold for players using the new console and expecting the best looking visuals for their games.

If you missed the last Gears 5 update 1.2.932.0 that dropped last April 27, read all the details about that here.

PS5 Shortages Will Likely Continue to Next Year Says Sony

PlayStation fans who are looking to play the waiting game for new supplies of the PlayStation 5 may still have a tough road ahead of them, as PS5 shortages will likely continue to next year says Sony.

In an interview conducted by Bloomberg, Sony group financial officer Hiroki Totoki disclosed to analysts in a private briefing that it was hard to keep up with demands for the new console due to lack of parts in creating new batches of the next gen system.

I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand.

We have sold more than 100 million units of the PlayStation 4 and considering our market share and reputation, I can’t imagine demand dropping easily.

Easily one of the most sought after items in the market today, the PS5 launched in November of last year and has since gone to become a very hard to find system in the worldwide marketplace. Scalpers and resellers have taken advantage of this drought, and a digital or disc based PS5 system can go for twice as much as its regular price — an unfavorable situation for customers that Sony is trying to fix by making more systems when they can manage.

Speaking of the PS5, Corsair has said the PS5 SCUF controllers will be out pretty early compared to other competitors — and you can read about that here.

Seven Deadly Sins Act 2: Pride

The Seven Deadly Sins in HITMAN 3 started at the end of March with Act 1: Greed. HITMAN 3 players are invited deeper into Agent 47’s mind to explore The Pride Profusion Escalation and take ownership of new items and a shiny suit! The Pride Announcement Trailer gives you a sneak peek of what to expect on May 10th!

General Updates

Challenges, Fixed
We’ve resolved issues that would prevent players from unlocking the following challenges: Cleaning Up (Colorado), Electric Boogie (Marrakesh, HBoS), Urine For It (Sapienza, Landslide), Estate Wines (Mendoza) and Got My Boomstick (Carpathian Mountains).

We’ve also fixed an issue that prevented the Bullet Train (Carpathian Mountains) trophy/achievement from unlocking.

Notebook Challenges
We’ve fixed an issue where completed Challenges would still be shown as ‘locked’ when viewed via the in-game notebook. Players would previously need to save/load or restart the mission to see accurate challenges displayed during the mission, even though completion status was correctly being tracked.

Legacy Lighting Pass
We’ve adjusted and tweaked various lighting issues across locations from HITMAN 1 and HITMAN 2. Only the ICA Facility and New York have not had any changes made related to lighting.

Our focus was to tweak extremely bright reflections or glows, transitioning between dark and bright areas, navigating/seeing textures in dark areas and to ensure that screenspace reflections look as expected with these changes.

Legacy Load Errors
We’ve made changes to resolve an issue that would prevent players from saving/loading when using items from HITMAN 1 or HITMAN 2. Basically, the one with the “Load Failed” error message that asked you to check that you had access to specific content.

NPCs Ignore Toilets
Toilets are now more appealing to anyone affected by emetic poison. In other words, we’ve resolved an issue where NPCs would prefer to use a rubbish bin / trash can rather than the toilet to throw up. Now, they will use the more logical choice, more often.

Leaderboard Percentiles
We’ve fully implemented a new feature to the Detailed Score Screen to give an at-a-glance look at how your score compares to the selected leaderboard. It’s also possible to see where the majority of players rank for each mission.

MiniMap Overlay
We’ve resolved a minor visual issue where icons near the minimap and prompts could overlap when viewing the inventory.

Sieker 1 Out
We’ve changed the properties of the Sieker 1 Emetic Gun to fix an issue where it could not be selected in Offline Mode.

Taunton Sieker
We’ve resolved an issue that would cause the inventory images of the Sieker 1 and Taunton Dart Gun to be swapped, depending on what was unlocked and in what order.

Identical Explosives
We’ve tweaked the inventory images for the ICA Explosive Images so that they better reflect the in-game versions.

PS5 Game Help
We’ve resolved an issue where placeholder text was showing for some steps of the PS5 Game Help. It had nothing to do with our pet cat.

Caught Bald-Headed
Agent 47’s bald head will no longer poke out the top of the Arkian Tuxedo suit.

Featured Contract Rewards
We’ve tidied up how the Featured Contracts rewards challenges are being tracked to fix a few issues. Some context: Our intention at launch was for players to complete unique Featured Contracts to earn the different milestone rewards (10, 20, 30, 40, etc). However, it was possible to reach these milestones by repeating the same contract. After reverting back to the intended structure, it caused a few irregularities on the challenge progress depending on the extent of players’ progress.

Here’s what will happen with the release of the 3.30 patch:

– Players who have reached the specified milestones when 3.30 is released will earn the related unlocks. (Example: If you currently have 32/30 contracts completed and no way to earn the unlock, 3.30 will grant you that unlock and mark the challenge as completed.)

– All uncompleted Featured Contract Reward challenges will accurately display the number of unique Featured Contracts that have been completed. (Example: If you played the same contract 29/30 times at launch, 3.30 will adjust that challenge progress to 1/30.)

The idea here is that we want to keep the intended structure of these challenges going forward, but without punishing players who played by the ‘rules’ at launch.

Featured Contract Counter
We’ve resolved an issue that could prevent the first completed Featured Contract from being registered on the “Featured Contracts – Track” counters, which could lead to irregularities in the progression.

FC Disconnect
We’ve resolved an issue that could cause players to disconnect when completing a Featured Contract. The contract completion was properly registered in the Featured Contracts Track challenges, but any unlocks that should have been awarded were not granted.

Queued Cues
We’ve made some changes to ensure that the proper audio cues play when unlocking new items through mastery unlocks or when new complications for Escalations are introduced.

Already Registered
We’ve updated the error message players receive when trying to log in to their IOI Account and are told that they are ‘already registered’ but unable to log in. Players are now told that they need to visit the IOI Account website and log in using their preferred platform. (This was mostly occurring for PC players who had previously signed up for an IOI Account but are playing HITMAN 3 on Epic for the first time.)

Xbox One Rendering Quality
We’ve added a ‘Rendering Quality’ toggle to the Options>Graphics menu on Xbox One X and Xbox One S that allows players to choose between High Quality or High Framerate modes.

A Brief Moment
We’ve resolved an issue that could cause in-game dialogue to continue after entering the inventory wheel and then choosing an item to store in a briefcase. It’s intended that the entire game is paused when players are in all inventory menus.

Challenge Filter
We’ve added a new option to the Challenge menus that will make it easier to filter the challenges depending on what you want to see.

Colourblind Guards
We’ve adjusted the guard dialogue lines that trigger when they’re hunting 47 to more accurately describe the suit he was wearing. In some cases, certain suits would trigger placeholder dialogue lines describing 47 in the Requiem suit.

Precision Aim
When playing on a controller, you can now press the L1/LB button to activate the ‘Marksman’ perk, which will improve your aim and slow down time. This has been implemented as part of a important change for Nintendo Switch players but will work for other controllers and platform too. The in-game UI and controller mapping will still show R2/RT as the default option for non-Switch players, but we’ve noted it here seeing as the option will be available.

Typo Thief
We’ve fixed a typo in the description of the Taunton Dart Gun. From Steal to Steel.

Tactical Placeholder
We’ve updated the description of the Tactical Turtleneck suit in the inventory to remove placeholder text.

Poison Pen
We’ve updated the Italian description for the Siringa Emetica a Forma di Penna ICA to better reflect that it is an emetic device, not lethal.

Stability Improvements
We’ve resolved issues that could cause the game to crash or be unstable.

Where It’s Due… 3.30
We’ve updated the credits to reflect work done since the last patch.

Location Changes: Dubai, UAE

7DS: Exiting Dubai
We’ve resolved an issue where the unique ‘exit music’ from The Greed Enumeration would trigger when exiting the Dubai location in content not associated with the DLC.

7DS: Voice of Greed
We’ve made a change so that dialogue from the The Greed Enumeration now stops playing when players skip the end cutscene.

The Sound of Carpet
We’ve resolved an issue that could prevent carpet sound effects from playing in Dubai. There was nothing wrong with the carpet itself, but 47 was not *quite* touching the carpet.

Location Changes: Dartmoor, England

Best Intensions
We’ve fixed a typo in the subtitles near the end of the “Means, Motive and Opportunity” Mission Story. We’re not going to tell you too much about it because spoilers.

Left In Suspense
We’ve resolved an issue where Agent 47 could get stuck when vaulting over walls in Dartmoor, especially near the Trophy Room.

Hang Down
We’ve fixed an issue where the phone in the Lawyer’s Office was always standing up.

My Room
We’ve fixed an issue where 47 can be spotted through a wall in Alexa’s bedroom.

Location Changes: Chongqing, China

A Very Observant Lady
We’ve reinforced some of the walls in the restaurant to prevent NPC’s from seeing 47 through specific walls.

Paper Town
We’ve resolved an issue where some buildings in the background of Chongqing appeared to be made of paper, or not connected to one another.

Wet Suit(s)
We’ve removed a layer of waterproof coating from the Raver Suit, Futo Suit, Freedom Phantom Suit and Lynch Suit so that they look wet when outdoors in the Chongqing rain. Same goes for 47’s head.

Apartment Stalkers
We’ve fixed a few tiny holes in the walls of the apartment staircase that allowed eagle-eyed NPC’s to see 47 performing illegal actions. They could probably see him perform legal actions too, but nobody reported that as a problem.

Inside Rain Out
We’ve tweaked a few things so that players no longer hear the ‘outside sounds’ of rain and traffic from certain places in the facility in Chongqing.

Location Changes: Mendoza, Argentina

Villa? On Top.
We’ve tweaked the drainpipes on the Villa Roof to make sure they’re visible from all angles.

Legal Rifles
Sniper Rifles are now considered to be ‘illegal’ when carried in any outfit in Mendoza, to be consistent with all other locations.

Location Changes: Carpathian Mountains, Romania

Improbable Proloff
We’ve tweaked some of the parameters of the Proloff Parable to allow players to earn the Silent Assassin rating on all three levels.

Sieger 300 Arctic
We’ve tweaked the inventory image of the Sieger 300 Arctic to better reflect the suppressor on the weapon.

Legacy Location Changes: HITMAN 1 and HITMAN 2

Marrakesh: Zaydan’s Prisoner
We’ve put the bag back on the prisoner’s head.

Sapienza: Solo Personale Autorizzato
We’ve fixed a sign on the door to the cave tunnel that was only visible when the door was open.

Isle of Sgail: Washing Ton
We’ve updated the description for the “Ghost of Janus’ Past” challenge to have the correct spelling of ‘Sophia Washington’.

Virtual Reality (PS VR)

Font Eligibility

We’ve made tweaks to the font colours to make them easier to read, depending on the background colour.

Textures
We’ve fixed several issues that were causing missing textures, visual issues and other environment art issues when playing in PS VR.

Platform-Specific Changes: Switch

Performance Mode
We’ve added a toggle to enable Performance Mode at 720p/60fps over the default option of 1080p/30fps.

Precision Fire
We’ve added the Steady Aim feature to the L button on Nintendo Switch. This allows you to improve your aim and slow time when aiming with a Sniper Rifle with the Marksman perk, especially useful for the Sniper Assassin game mode and certain Mission Stories. The in-game UI and controller maps will display this accurately.

Helpful note: It’s possible to toggle whether you hold or tap ZL in order to aim a weapon. Look for the Toggle Aim option in Options>Gameplay>Weapon Aim. Note that this won’t affect  47’s ‘aiming’ when throwing; this will still require the play to hold the button to move 47’s throwing arc.

Dubai Demo
We’ve added a new 10 minute trial available for all Nintendo Switch players, allowing them to experience the new Performance Mode on the opening level of the game; Dubai.

The May roadmap will also be revealed later, and once we know more, we’ll let our readers know.

Destiny 2 Season of the Splicer Rewards Preview Showcases Armors, Weapons

Just a few days ago, Bungie announced that the new season of Destiny 2 is hitting this coming Tuesday, and is called “Season of the Splicer.” Same as with every season, one of the biggest draws here are the unique rewards players will be able to earn. With this in mind, Bungie has revealed a Destniy 2 Season of the Splicer rewards preview!

Destiny 2 Season of the Splicer Rewards Preview:

Previously, you would earn this armor by leveling your Season Rank and unlocking new pieces on the Seasonal Track. Moving forward, Seasonal Armor will be earned from Seasonal activities. You’ll also be able to guarantee pieces from these sets using Focused Umbral Engrams. Season Rank levels that once featured armor have been updated with packages of Glimmer, Legendary Shards, Upgrade Modules, Exotic Engrams, Enhancement Cores, and Enhancement Prisms. Universal Armor Ornaments will continue to be earned towards the end of the Season Pass.
The Seasonal Track will contain three new weapons to earn, with Season Pass owners will be able to unlock the new Exotic sidearm on day one of the season, as soon as players claim their  first reward.
There’s a lot of that coming in as well! Check out some of the stuff that cacn be obtained via Umbral Engrams and Override completions:

There’s also the a new quest where players will be able to earn Null Composure Fusion Rifle. Once it’s unlocked, players can collect Gambit, Crucible, and Vanguard themed weapon ornaments to further customize your style.
There are 12 total Legendary weapons to earn (four per activity), which can be obtained as post-game rewards for Gambit, Crucible, and Vanguard Strikes.
For the endgame, there are a few returning weapons. Each weapon will be on a weekly rotation in Nightfall playlists. Upping the difficulty will mean a higher drop chance. Grandmaster Nightfalls are coming next month on June 22 where players can earn Adept versios of the weapons.

Once the patch is out on Tuesday, we’ll be sure to let our readers know. Go give the patch notes preview a read to see what’s coming.

Which Developers Have Earned “Must Play” Status Due to Their Reputation?

While gamers can’t possibly like every game they come across, have you encountered a studio that seems to make games perfectly in tune with your tastes? So much so, that over the years, you’ve decided to trust said studio(s) that your brain goes into “must-play” territory whenever this studio announces a game (regardless of genre)?

We here at MP1st have different gaming tastes, but we have the same feelings too. Below are some of the staff members’ “must-play” studio list, which means that, whenever these studios announce a game, we’re bound to play their game (play doesn’t necessarily mean buy) given the trust we have with the studios.

Sean Mesler:

Naughty Dog – While I played the Crash Bandicoot games and Jak and Daxter, my love affair with Naughty Dog didn’t begin until Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. It was the reason I bought a PS3. And while I liked the game quite a bit, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was truly when I fell madly in love with Naughty Dog as a studio. Their ability to tell a good story while also having a fun game is pretty much unmatched and with The Last of Us Part II, which I find to be their masterpiece in both storytelling and gameplay, they have earned my money pretty much sight unseen.

FromSoftware – I admittedly avoided From’s games since Demon’s Souls through Dark Souls and Dark Souls II because of their reputation for being incredibly harc and obtuse. Then I tried Bloodborne when it released in 2015 on a whim and it became my favorite game of all time. After that I played all of the available “Soulsborne” games at the time, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin, Dark Souls then Demon’s Souls (yes, I went backwards). Dark Souls III and Sekiro were day one purchases for me. The Demon’s Souls remake was the first game I played on my PS5. They’re easily my favorite developer so anything new they release in those genres is a must-play.

Tim Villasor:

Resident Evil 4K

Capcom Dev 1 – The ones behind the Resident Evil/ Biohazard games, and utilizing the RE Engine. Since Resident Evil 7, they’ve been on a roll, and I’d want them to keep chugging in some Survival Horror action.

Kojima Productions – Anything by the man Hideo Kojima and his team I will absolutely dive into. After Death Stranding, I want to see what’s next from the guy who created the Metal Gear franchise.
Dotemu – With Streets of Rage 4, this company nailed nostalgia beat-’em-up to a tee, and they’re going for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles next. Bring on some more of that retro gaming action.

Jimmy Lara:

Nintendo: More so specifically the talent behind Mario and Zelda, because 28 years and I’ve yet to hate any of those games. Just when you think those franchises have done all that they can, Nintendo proves everyone wrong and somehow keeps things fresh after decades.

Demon's Souls PS5 Reviews

FromSoftware: Ever since the release of Demon’s Souls I have yet to be disappointed by any offering from this studio. They’re fun, addictive, and challenging, and it’s hard to picture them making a “bad” game.
Sony Santa Monica Studio: God of War, come on.

Alex Co:

DICE: This is probably the most controversial pick in the group, but given how big of a Battlefield fan I am, I’m a fan of the studio since early on, too. Mirror’s Edge, Medal of Honor, and other past DICE projects have all been played by me automatically given the trust I have with the studio. And yes, I cannot wait for this year’s Battlefield game!

Naughty Dog: I’ve been a fan of Naughty Dog ever since the Crash Bandicoot days, and have even played the studio’s Way of the Warrior on 3D0! So far, after the first Uncharted, the studio has been on a roll when it comes to quality gaming experiences that I’ll gladly play whatever game they cook up regardless of genre.

Respawn Entertainment: Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (and more) are three games that are critical darlings, and with good reason. Simply put: since Respawn started operations back in 2010, the studio has not released a “bad” game, or even an average one. Don’t believe me? Check out the studio’s Metacritic profile which is currently sitting at an impressive 80 for career score on games released.

Call of Duty League Championship Statue to Be Erected in Warzone

Here comes more of that synergy corporate execs are so happy about, as Activiison has announced that a Call of Duty League-inspired championship statue has been erected in Call of Duty: Warzone!

The press release mentions that this statue is located at Verdansk Stadium, and will honor the 2020 Call of Duty League champs, the Dallas Empire! Check out the screenshot of it below:

In addition to the Call of Duty League trophy being added as a real-world (and towering) element within Call of Duty: Warzone, this first-of-its-kind esports integration will honor the 2020 Call of Duty League champions, the Dallas Empire. As part of the celebration, Dallas Empire’s logo will rest at the base of the statue, while massive banners featuring the portraits and names of its 2020 championship-winning roster will appear above the Verdansk Stadium entrance.
The Dallas Empire team didn’t know about this, and there’s even a reaction video released too!

According to Activision, Raven Software — who designed the station — will go up on May 10.

I have to say, this does make sense. Given how much Warzone has evolved, don’t expect this to be the last new thing they add this year.
