PS Plus Free Games June 2019 – Sonic Mania and Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

The next pair of PS Plus free games for June 2019 have been announced by Sony today. Not only did players get the release date of Death Stranding, but Sony is now treating them to incredible games to play for the month of June! The two games that are going to be free for the month of June are Sonic Mania and Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.

Sonic Mania is a throwback to the 16-bit era of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, with side-scrolling platforming gameplay in which Sonic, Miles “Tails” Prower, and Knuckles are all playable. The game also received an expansion which included fan favorite characters like Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel!

In a surprise move, Sega handed the development keys to notable members of the Sonic fan game community, including Christian Whitehead. Industry veterans might recall this person’s contributions with the mobile ports of 16-bit Sonic games. Sonic Mania was originally released in August 2017 on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Windows PC, and Xbox One.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is a great, cheap way to catch up on the shooter franchise before the release of Borderlands 3. The package contains the original Borderlands game, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. The Handsome Collection also includes all DLC for both titles, enhanced local multiplayer and remastered visuals.

Furthermore, players who owned the PS3 version of Borderlands and Borderlands 2 will be able to carry their save data between the PS3 and PS4 versions. In other words, players will be able to pick up where they left off in the enhanced versions of these games.

Both Sonic Mania and Borderlands: The Handsome Collection will be available on June 4, 2019. In the meantime, you can still enjoy the PS+ titles for May, 2019. What else could Sony have on their hands to continue pleasing their loyal fans? Let us know in the comments.

Death Stranding Release Date Revealed – New Video Trailer Released

A new trailer for Death Stranding was released which includes a full release date for the game. This trailer was first unveiled at the PlayStation Twitch channel and was released on March 29, 2019. The trailer showcases a few more tidbits of gameplay and the Death Stranding release date!

The trailer features the song “Path” made by Apocalyptica, it’s a rather fitting piece considering the game’s setting. The trailer also shows some action sequences with the main character being able to ride vehicles. It also shows some of the monsters players will be facing against when the game releases on November 8, 2019.

Of course, another one of the trailer’s highlights is the amount of detail in the environment as a whole. The trailer shows amazing landscapes with breathtaking atmospheric shots that take place in forests and meadows. This only complements the horror aesthetic of the game, making players feel helpless while facing the horrors of the mysterious world of Death Stranding.

However, it seems like players won’t be defenseless while playing Death Stranding, as the trailer showcases some combat mechanics in the field. Once again, Hideo Kojima knows just how to deliver a fantastic trailer that left players satisfied. You, too can watch the trailer below and re-experience the thrill that players felt once the trailer was finally revealed:

Report: New Borderlands 2 DLC Will Be Released During E3 2019, Will Bridge Borderlands 2 to BL3

Borderlands 3 is right around the corner. As such, many rumors about it and other titles in the series have started surfacing more than ever before. According to PlayStation Lifestyle, a trusted source has hinted that there will be a new Borderlands 2 DLC. This expansion would bridge the gap between the ending of Borderlands 2 and the beginning of Borderlands 3.

The name of the DLC expansion will be Commander Lilith and the fight for Sanctuary. This upcoming Borderlands 2 DLC will let players experience the game for the last time before moving on to the new installment in the franchise. According to the source, the new Borderlands 2 DLC will be dropping sometime during E3 week.

It isn’t known about whether or not the DLC will be available for all platforms. Presumably, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC will take priority in terms of release. However, there’s no word about this new Borderlands 2 DLC appearing on PSVR or last-gen versions of the game. Unfortunately, it’s easy to assume that it will not be released on these platforms.

For those unaware of who the supposed protagonist of this new DLC campaign is. Lilith was one of the playable vault hunters in the first game, and has since been a recurring character across the series. She also plays a prominent role in Borderlands 3 where she recruits Crimson Raiders to investigate the Children of the Vault cult.

The new Borderlands 2 DLC could tackle the story behind Lilith’s quest. In other words, players might see the origins behind the Children of the Vault cult as well as backstory on how many of Borderlands most popular characters end up on Sanctuary 3, the new ship that will take players from planet to planet.

We heavily suggest our readers to take this rumor with a grain of salt. While there is a lot of substance to it, none of this can be stated as fact until Gearbox Software confirms the veracity of this rumor. Regardless of such, this new Borderlands 2 DLC would definitely give players a lot of hype leading up to the release of Borderlands 3.

Report: Death Stranding Release Date Set for November According to PlayStation Taiwan, Pre-Order Bonuses Leaked on PSN Store

While there’s no set date yet on when Hideo Kojima’s highly ambitious game Death Stranding will be out, rumors have surfaced that the Death Stranding release date will be announced soon, and given how the PSN Store seems to have announced the Death Stranding pre-order bonuses ahead of time, that might be legit.

Over on Facebook, the official PlayStation Taiwan page announced that the Death Stranding release date is set for November 8, 2019! The post has since been pulled, but not before Twitter user NanoGuidingStar managed to grab a screenshot of it:

We’re not done with the leaks just yet. Over on the the Death Stranding subreddit, user jlcaloca89 posted a screenshot of the game being featured on the PlayStation Store, and it shows the Death Stranding pre-order bonuses as well.

Death Stranding Pre Order Bonus Items:

  • PS4 Dynamic Theme
  • PS4 Avatar (Chibi Ludens)
  • Gold “Sam” Sunglasses
  • Gold Armor Plate
  • Gold Hat
  • Gold Speed Skeleton

As you can see, most are cosmetic items for your character in the game. Hopefully, we’ll get more clarification soon on whether PlayStation Taiwan got the memo wrong, or just accidentally announced the Death Stranding release date ahead of time.

Inaugural Gamescom Asia Set to Take Place in October 2020 in Singapore

If you’re based in Asia, the choices when it comes to video game conventions aren’t that many, and none are definitely as big as gamescom. Well, that’s about to change real soon. Today. it’s been announced that gamescom asia will debut in 2020 in Singapore! The event is slated to run from October 15 to 18, 2020.

Today, a memorandum of understanding was signed between events organizer Koelnmesse and the Singapore Tourism Board. Koelnmesse is the organizer of gamescom, which has been held in Cologne, Germany, since 2009, and is easily one of the biggest video game conventions in the world, with (possibly) E3 being the only one to top it in terms of scope and exhibitors.

Here’s what Koelnmesse Singapore Matthias Kuepper had to say about gamescom’s first foray into Asia:

“This is a launch event that we are all looking forward to. The region has been hungry for a Tier One gaming event and we now have all the ingredients to successfully cater to this need. With strong partnerships with GameStart, the Singapore government, and the gaming ecosystem, we are expected to attract over 30,000 enthusiasts and gaming industry professionals to the inaugural gamescom asia.”

Participants can expect gamescom asia to take place over four days, with two days of it for gaming conferences, while there will be three days open to the public where eSports matches, workshops and meet-and-greet sessions will be on hand.

Gamescom Asia will be working alongside Singpapore’s GameStart Asia, which will be handing the reins over to gamescom asia following GameStart’s last even which will be held in October 12-13, 2019.

Let’s hope that gamescom asia will be able to match whatever’s shown in gamescom in Germany. If so, gamers will be in for a treat.

Battlefield 5 US and JP Factions Arrive in Secret, Firestorm Respawn System Being Worked On

Looking forward to new factions in Battlefield 5? It seems DICE has sneakily slotted in the Battlefield 5 US faction, and the Japan faction in its latest patch.

Thanks to Battlefield dataminer temporyal, we get to see evidence of this, plus pictures of unreleased gadgets, news on being a Battlefield 5 Firestorm respawn feature and more!

US and Japanese factions arrived (secretly)

DICE took first steps towards individual factions for the Pacific and implemented the US and Japanese as seperated parts in the company. Take a look at this image to understand what happened behind the curtain:

Explanation:

Before the patch we had just Allies and Axis depicting UK and Germany. These parts were internally renamed to “Allies – UK” and “Axis – Germany”. Though not visible DICE additionally added “Allies – US Pacific” and “Axis – Japan” next to the existing factions.

Note: The faction titles in the second part of the image were done by myself because the internal names (“Allies – US Pacific”,…) are just too long. We’ll see what DICE is going to choose in Tides of War Chapter 5.

Conclusions:

  • We’ll probably get separate soldiers / loadout options for the new factions (not surprising but quite a few feared that DICE would stick to a big “Allies” and “Axis” pool).
  • Restricting models, weapons, gadgets or vehicles to certain theatres of war is now (of course) an option – feel free to speculate to which extent this is going to be the case.
  • It is interesting that they’ve added the “Pacific” suffix to the US faction. Probably necessary because one “big” US faction for both Pacific and Europe would allow you to use all of their equipment in both theatres of war.

Battlefield 5 Firestorm Respawn Feature Being Worked On:

(Photoshopped example of what the respawn event message might look like)

The recent patch shows some significant signs in various files that DICE is working on a respawn system for the squad and duo (yeah I know…) version of Firestorm.

  • It is connected to a public event (location) so you have to go there and capture it
  • Players get a message on their screen that Respawn is available
  • “Squad Spawn” sounds like you just spawn like in regular multiplayer (so no advanced stuff like getting back into the game via an additional airdrop)

Mercury: Combat Zone & Assets

I’ve read a lot of questions about the actual combat area of Mercury after posting the complete minimap a few days ago.

While I am not able to exactly track it down I think the named locations give you a pretty good idea where you will be engaging other players.

The image features roughly 85% of all location names (I skipped some roads for example and a few places overlap)

Mercury Game Modes:

  • Breakthrough
  • Conquest
  • Domination
  • Frontlines
  • Outpost
  • Squad Conquest
  • Team Deathmatch

Mercury Map Assets

Ingame model of the DFS 230, a German transport glider operated by the Luftwaffe in World War II. It played a significant role in the Battle of Crete and will therefore be featured as a non-usable asset on Mercury.

Yes, there is an in-game model of a dolphin in the game files!

Grand Operation Greece

It is no surprise that we’ll get a new Grand Operation with the launch of the second greece map (“Marita”). Here is the structure:

  • Day 1: Marita (Frontlines) -> usually we should expect Airborne here so maybe just a placeholder…
  • Day 2: Marita (Breakthrough)
  • Day 3: Mercury (Conquest)
  • Day 4: Mercury (Final Stand)

Game Mode “Invasion”: A Grand Operation Alternative?

“All out warfare: Defend your resources and destroy the enemy resources. Destroy enemy resources while protecting your own. Eliminate enemy troops and resources to win.” (Ingame Description)

  • Classified as an “Overall Gamemode” like Grand Operation
  • 32v32 players and two rounds per map
  • Airborne seems to be part of it (maybe round 1 / day 1)
  • Second round / day features a conquest-breakthrough mix where you have to capture objectives and (after some time?) they’re permanently yours
  • Seems to have a “carry over” mechanic (like Grand Operation) to get a bonus for round two if you do well in round 1

Temporyal is unsure whether this is a new game mode or something else. It’s coming in Chapter 5, and could be an alternative to Grand Operations.

New Squad Reinforcement

A new squad reinforcement is called “High Altitude Reconnaissance” and “Spots both Teams”. It’s probably a call-in airplane (non-usable) with a spotting camera flying over the target zone and it surely has some “recon plane” vibe which we’ll get for 5v5 mode.

Models of Unreleased Battlefield 5 Equipment

  • Type 89 Knee Mortar
  • TN-17 Radio Jammer
  • Hawkins grenade
  • Model SLd Flare Pistol
  • The remote controlled Goliath Sd.kfz 303 (unfortunately with unfinished tracks)

That’s a lot of unconfirmed new stuff that could potentially be in Battlefield 5, no? In addition to that, we’ve posted about some of the new weapons coming to BF5 and their stats, and even some of the new weapon challenges too.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate Next Update Set for This Week, Here’s Some of the New Things Being Introduced

The next patch for Super Smash Bros Ultimate is going to be released this week across all regions. This new update for the acclaimed fighting game for the Nintendo Switch will bring multiple character adjustments. As such, multiple fighters might see some incredible buffs or nerfs that might affect the meta game as a whole.

According to Nintendo Versus, the new update (Ver. 3.1.0) will be live at some point during this week. However, replays made during Ver. 3.0.0 will now become incompatible with the newer version. In other words, players need to hurry up and put their best replays in Smash World or record their replays before they are lost forever!

There will be changes in terms of character balance. However, there hasn’t been any sort of new content for the next patch in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. As such, it’s easy to assume that Ver. 3.1.0 will majorly focus on balance changes rather than on full-fledged new content. Nintendo will definitely know which characters deserve to have buffs and nerfs.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is now available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. The game features a roster of 71 characters with more to come in the near future. In fact, one of the most recent additions to the game is Joker from Persona 5. Joker is now available for purchase as part of the Fighter Pass. However, he can also be purchased separately as DLC for the game.

Call of Duty Social Media Accounts for Different Countries Prepping for COD 2019 Reveal, Here’s All the Messages From Each

While it’s been a lot later than we’re used to getting it, reports have surfaced that the Call of Duty 2019 reveal is set to happen this May 30, and it seems those reports are true as Activision seems to slowly be starting the hype train for COD 2019!

If you check the Call of Duty Twitter (US), you’ll its profile background has been changed to solid black, and below its name it says “Going Dark.”

This is the same case with the official Call of Duty Instagram account:

Now, in case you didn’t know, there are country-specific official Call of Duty accounts as well. Either it’s due to translation, or Activision has a hidden message or something, but each account has different phrases mentioned. Thanks to Reddit user EyeTV, you can check ’em out below.

The Japanese text reads, “Prepare for Infiltration Operation.”

New Instagram bios found on Call of Duty accounts. [COD]
byu/EyeTV inCallOfDuty

  1. Main account: “Going Dark”
  2. Russian account: “Silence on the air”
  3. Spanish account: “We start”
  4. German account: “Lights out”
  5. French/Italian/Middle east account: “Silence on the radio.”

The wait isn’t long now for the COD 2019 reveal, which is somehow tied to the Modern Warfare franchise. The latest news that cropped up mentions how COD 2019 will just be titled “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare,” and will be a “soft reboot” of the original Modern Warfare game.

In other Call of Duty 2019 news, a rumor has surfaced that Activision is considering a f2p mode for this year’s iteration, though nothing has been decided yet.

What do you make of the social media account phrases? Are you excited to see COD 2019 later this week?

Ubisoft Pass Existence Leaked by Ubisoft Store

A ResetEra user spotted a possible new feature for the Ubisoft Store. This leak takes the form of a placeholder image for a new subscription service. This placeholder image was live on the Ubisoft Store for a short amount of time. It appears to be the placeholder for an unannounced service called the Ubisoft Pass.

Ubisoft Pass leaked?

There hasn’t been any confirmation from Ubisoft about the nature of this placeholder image. However, it’s easy to assume that this is going to be a subscription service much like EA Access. The word “Premium” leads some users to believe that this service will be delivered in tiers with multiple benefits.

Of course, the main concern about this supposedly upcoming subscription service would be the price point. Some users speculate that the price would be of $5 to $10 USD per month. However, this is pure speculation as the image doesn’t show anything regarding a price for the service. With E3 around the corner, it’s easy to assume that Ubisoft will further explain the ins and outs of this new streaming service during their conference. Other than that, we’ll be on the lookout for new details regarding the Ubisoft Pass and the Ubisoft Pass Premium.

In the current climate of subscription-based game services, it’s definitely not strange to see Ubisoft throwing their own alternative to the mix. Especially considering that Ubisoft has a library of legendary titles spanning multiple console generations. Franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, Prince of Persia, and many more would give Ubisoft more than enough material to keep players satisfied.

World Health Organization Officially Lists Gaming Disorder as a Disease

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially added gaming disorder to its registry of officially recognized diseases. This addition is part of the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11). The voting process happened over the weekend with all 194 members of the WHO voting in favor of the addition.

According to the WHO’s listing, gaming disorder is characterized by “A pattern of recurrent gaming behavior” be it online or offline. The WHO also states that this behavior is manifested by:

  • Impaired control over gaming (e.g., onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context).
  • Increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities.
  • Continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences. The behavior pattern is of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning.

People who are deemed to have the “gaming disorder” run the risk of “significant impairment” to their personal, family, social, education, and occupational lives, according to the WHO. However, for it to be suggested that the person has “gaming disorder”, they need to be exhibiting this behavior for a year or longer.

This new classification has become the subject of controversy ever since it was proposed back in December 2017. In January 2018, the Electronic Software Association expressed its disapproval of the proposition. Ever since then, several gaming associations have added their own concerns about the WHO’s ICD-11 proposal. Some of the organizations involved include:

  • The Association for UK Interactive Entertainment (UKIE)
  • European Games Developer Federation (EGDF)
  • Interactive Entertainment South Africa (IESA)
  • Entertainment Software Association of Canada (ESAC)
  • Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (IGEA)
  • Interactive Software Federation of Europe (ISFE)
  • Korean Association of Game Industry (KGAMES)
  • União Brasileira de Vídeo e Games (UBV&G)

This industry lobbying group has stated that their products had “educational, therapeutic, and recreational value” and were “enjoyed safely and sensibly by more than 2 billion people worldwide.” In addition, the group has also stated that: “The evidence for its inclusion remains highly contested and inconclusive.”

Meanwhile, Sony’s Chief Executive Officer Kenichiro Yoshida stated that gaming disorder needs to be taken seriously. According to PlayStation Lifestyle, Yoshida believes that game companies need to adopt countermeasures against this issue. “We’ve already implemented a ratings system (to restrict players by age) and have been taking measures based on our own standards,” he told Japanese media outlets.

While the adoption of the ICD-11 has been officially accepted by the World Health Organization. The classification will not come into effect until January 1, 2022. In other words, the game industry will have plenty of time to make its case regarding gaming disorder.

Report: The Last of Us 2 Release Date Planned for This Year, New Trailer Dropping This Week

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything official regarding The Last of Us Part II, but that might be changing soon. According to a new report by GameReactor, we’ll be getting a new The Last of Us 2 trailer this week, and what’s more, The Last of Us 2 release date will be revealed as well.

Over on gaming forum ResetEra, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier posted that while he doesn’t know if there’s a new trailer dropping this week, he has heard that the game is indeed planned for release sometime this year.

Given that Naughty Dog has mentioned that the ending for The Last of Us 2 has already been shot, and the fact that the two main characters’ scenes are done shooting, I wouldn’t be surprised if The Last of Us 2 release date was indeed set for sometime in 2019. Plus, Sony themselves seemingly hinted at it over on PSN, even.

With how the first game punctuated the PS4’s generation when it was released, it looks like Sony might be doing the same thing with The Last of Us 2 as we transition to the PS5.

Mortal Kombat 11 DLC Characters to Be Revealed Soon

It’s been a few months ever since Mortal Kombat 11 was delivered to players. However, many people are wondering about when the DLC characters are going to be revealed. For those unaware, the Mortal Kombat 11 DLC has been confirmed as far as a few months ago. However, players don’t know what the new characters will be or when they’ll be available for purchase.

However, that might change soon as Ed Boon, the creator of the Mortal Kombat saga, has recently renewed the hype for DLC on his Twitter account. In the post, Ed Boon said that in the upcoming days there will be an announcement for new Mortal Kombat 11 DLC which will be joining the likes of Shang Tsung, that will expand the current roster.

Unfortunately, Ed Boon didn’t spare more details about the actual reveal, such as which characters will be announced, and when we’ll actually see these new fighters be part of the roster.

However, players can only hope that the new DLC characters become game changers. Of course, people are also wondering which characters are going to come back to Mortal Kombat 11. For example, we could see the return of Rain after his non-playable cameo in Mortal Kombat XL. Maybe we’ll see completely new characters like the alien/Xenomorph from Fox’s Alien movie franchise, or Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th movie series.

Which Mortal Kombat 11 DLC characters are you hoping to see revealed soon? Mortal Kombat 11 is now available for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. What are the characters you expect to appear as DLC in the upcoming days? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section!

Battlefield 5 Mercury Map Release Date Is May 30, Watch the Trailer Now

Looking forward to new Battlefield 5 content? Maybe a new map? You’re getting your wish this week! In a press release, DICE has announced the Battlefield 5 Mercury map release date, and it’s set for May 30!

Check out the Battlefield 5 Mercury trailer below.

Map Overview

Based on the events of Operation Mercury in 1941, this map lets you deploy on the coast of Crete where the British take on the invading German forces. Gameplay-wise, Mercury is all about verticality, all-out war, and asymmetrical vehicle forces; British troops have tanks and only a small number of planes while Germans will control the skies. Leverage the rocky slopes for intense vertical gameplay and close quarters gameplay.

Mercury at a Glance

Units:

  • Infantry
  • Aircraft
  • Vehicles

Size:

  • Medium-Large

Tempo:

  • Moderate-Fast

Playstyle

Mercury caters for many different playstyles. It’s built to be a proper all-out war map, where players will be pushing with tanks, holding out for air support, or desperately defending a flag position. Battlefield veterans will see shades of three classic maps from older titles: Guadalcanal from Battlefield™ 1942, the Altai Range map from Battlefield™ 4, and Battlefield™ 1’s Monte Grappa.

Due to the size and verticality of the map, tempo will vary. Find holes in the defense to flank or engage in a hot firefight around one of the flags. There’s a place in the map for SMGs to clash with shotguns, while Recon players can snipe at Support players, who in turn suppress enemies with their LMGs.

Key Areas and Conquest Capture Points

As the battle rages, it will do so among scenic olive groves, state-of-the-art radar towers, and anything in between. Let’s go through some of the key areas. The Capture Points – AKA flags – listed below are taken from Conquest mode but should give a good overview of what Mercury has to offer.

Capture Point A: Cove
This flag is a quiet beach near a crashed Axis transport plane. Rocky cliffs surround the area, protecting it from long range attacks, and creating very vertical engagements between the players on the beach and those on the rocks above.

Capture Point B: Poulos House
The now-abandoned home of a wealthy family with grounds sitting above old olive tree groves, offering a stunning view of the Aegean Sea. The walls and gates provide poor protection from bullets and explosives, but Fortifications can be built to repurpose the space.

Capture Point C: Radar Sites
These twin radar installations along with the tall communications tower are just the latest expression of military might that the war has brought to the island. A large, sprawling capture area encompasses both radars and a nearby building, with Fortifications providing covered movement and firing positions.

Capture Point D: Village
This house sits on the edge of a village, abutting a quiet town square. White walls surround the plot of land, offering some cover from incoming fire, which will certainly come from the Radar Sites above, the hills behind, and from windows in the nearby houses.

Capture Point E: Marina
Local fishermen worked here before the war, with a quiet café offering respite after a long day on the water. The open capture area allows for tanks to resupply, but the surrounding houses and hills are perfect spots for enemy infantry.

Four Tips for Success on Mercury

Straight from the developers, here are a handful of pointers that will help you and your squad win the day.

  • Stay alert! In a map as vertical as Mercury, attacks can come from unexpected directions and there are many flanking routes to keep an eye on.
  • Assist your vehicles! The terrain is treacherous; help those behind wheels survive through repairs or by taking out enemy Assault players. Support your pilots by eliminating AA emplacements or vehicles.
  • Build Fortifications! Mercury’s rough and rugged terrain can be unforgiving, but a few sandbags can absorb incoming fire when the chips are down.
  • Flank! Don’t get bogged down in head-to-head encounters. Use the beach and the hills to your advantage.

Once the patch or any update is out, we’ll be sure to let you know. Make sure to check out this list of upcoming Battlefield 5 weapons and their stats.
