EA & DICE Reveal Star Wars Battlefront’s New Team Deathmatch Mode, Blast

Blast Mode is Star Wars Battlefront‘s take on classic Team Deathmatch that pits Rebels against Imperials in 10-versus-10 action.

According to the first official details that surfaced today, Blast is first-to-100-kills. Alternatively, the team with the most kills at the end of the 10-minute timer wins the match. Like all of the multiplayer maps in Star Wars Battlefront, Blast maps will be designed specifically for that game mode and will present a nice variety in gameplay.

“One battle you’ll be fighting within interior levels on Endor or Sullust. In the next battle, you might find yourselves among Tatooine’s dusty canyons, or inside the undeniably cool Ice Caves on Hoth,” said Lead Level Designer Dennis Brännvall. “My favorite is the verticality of Tatooine, fighting by the Sandcrawler.”

Players will also notice differences in similar locations that might act as the backdrop for multiple game modes. “Say you’ve just played Walker Assault mode on Hoth and then switched to Blast, still on Hoth. Thanks to variations in lighting and time of day, you’ll definitely see a difference,” Brännvall added.

Map layout is key, as weapon pick-ups will also play a role in combat. “Whether you pick up a Droid™ scanning for nearby enemies or a turret that’ll control a zone for you, the pickups can really turn the tide of a Blast match,” Brännvall continued. “They are not around every corner though, so keep your eyes peeled.”

According to DICE, Blast is straight-up infantry-versus-infantry combat. Heroes & Villains won’t have a presence in matches, nor will any of Star Wars Battlefront’s vehicles. Meanwhile, Battlefront’s 40-player matches, like Walker Assault, first shown off at E3 2015, will offer the full spectrum of Star Wars combat.

Excited to try out some good old Team Deathmatch in Star Wars Battlefront? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.

Star Wars Battlefront launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 17.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Reckoning DLC Arrives August 4, Watch The Gameplay Trailer

Next week, Sledgehammer Games is delivering the fourth and final downloadable content drop to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare fans, first on Xbox Live.

According to today’s announcement, Reckoning DLC hits Microsoft’s platforms first on August 4 and will launch on Sony’s consoles and PC at a later date, likely in one month’s time. It’s the final content drop covered by Advanced Warfare’s Season Pass but can be purchased separately at $14.99 USD, as usual.

Four new multiplayer maps are once again the bread-and-butter of the new pack, this time without any returning oldies. Of course, there’s also the final chapter in the Advanced Warafre’s Exo Zombies saga.

Read up on the details from the press release below and have a look above at the announcement trailer.

Overload

Advanced Warfare

“Enjoy the grand view of downtown New Baghdad from this exotic compound, complete with fountains, gardens and decorative plasma lamps. The map’s multiple levels and long perimeter site-lines highlight medium to long-range combat, and firing a shot at the lamps will send enemies flying in a burst of energy.”

Quarantine

Advanced Warfare

“Following a deadly viral outbreak, the island has been converted into a biological testing center. This medium sized map’s tight corners dial up the speed and open areas combine to allow for any style of gameplay. Activate the map-based scorestreak to unleash a devastating ship-fired missile strike.”

Fracture

Advanced Warfare

“Discover what secrets are locked in the ice in this arctic excavation site. Take refuge behind wind turbines and heavy equipment through large combat areas cradled on the shelf of a glacier. Stay alert as the timed event cracks the ice sheet, sending one lane sinking to the depths.”

Swarm

Advanced Warfare

“Reconstruction is underway in Seoul, South Korea, congesting narrow corridors of this small to medium sized map with vehicles and equipment. Take position in war-scarred storefronts that provide plenty of cover over the streets or flank the enemy through close quarter interiors in the center of the map.”

Descent

Advanced Warfare

“Closing out the final DLC Pack for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the dramatic conclusion of the Exo Zombies saga with the last episode, Descent. Descent introduces a remote ocean Atlas survival facility, new “fused” exo zombie enemies, and the Trident Reflected Energy Weapon.”

Destiny – Bungie Teases New Weapons In The Taken King DLC, Next Trials of Orisis To Feature Random Map Rotation, & Hot Fix 1.2.0.5 Notes

In addition to a slew of new adventures to partake in and enemies to conquer, Guardians will have a deep arsenal of brand new weapons to explore once Destiny: The Taken King drops on September 15.

Bungie’s latest Weekly Update presents a sampling of what’s to come, as well as some background on each of the new manufactures. Be sure to head over to the actual post to read up on some of the design philosophies behind each manufacturer and how they will impact gameplay in The Taken King.

Read on as there are also a few things you’ll want to note in order to prepare for this weekend’s Trials of Osiris.

Bungie says there’s a lot more coming, too. “We’re holding back a number of armament categories for you to discover for yourself as the Taken War escalates. The models you’re looking at will seed a vast array of options you’ll use to equip your Guardian,” Community Manager David “DeeJ” Dague wrote.

“There will be more choices than ever to arm yourself in the Tower. Factions will have their own guns. Classes will have their own guns. More Quests will lead you directly to specific guns. Even the Gunsmith will have a new way to include you in his enterprise. We’ll inspect all of that as well before you earn the means to equip yourselves to meet a rising threat.”

Crucible-goers looking forward to this weekend’s Trials of Osiris competition will find their path to The Lighthouse a little different. Senior Designer Derek Carroll chimed into this week’s update with a few notes about the map rotation in this weekend’s event.

“By now, you know how this works… each week we select a single map to be the combat arena for the entire weekend’s Trials of Osiris, and everyone is thrilled with the choice,” he wrote. “This week only, we’re setting the Trials of Osiris playlist to ‘random,’ just like the Elimination playlist, but on the six Trials maps where you’ve made your weekend homes.”

Carroll’s post was followed by a series of heat maps for each battle ground featured in the Trials of Osiris thus far. Have a look below and study ’em up before the weekend!

According to Carroll, next week also marks the return of Lord Saladin and the Iron Banner.

The last point of this week’s update touched upon Hot Fix 1.2.0.5, which Bungie says is due within the next month. There are just a few notes which mainly have to do with the Nepal Digital Rewards and the Husk of the Pit weapon. You can have look at the details below.

Star Wars Battlefront To Get An Early EA Access Launch On Xbox One

Update

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has echoed Greenberg’s previous statement, saying in one of his own Twitter responses that Star Wars Battlefront will be playable first on Xbox One via EA Access.

Original Story

April 13, 2015

Star Wars fans on Xbox One will be able to play the upcoming next-gen shooter from developer DICE first, according to a games marketing leader at Microsoft. Responding to the excitement over Star Wars Battlefront‘s upcoming gameplay reveal on Twitter, Xbox Marketing Lead Aaron Greenberg told fans that they’ll be able to “play it first on Xbox One.”

This, of course, would be via EA Access, an Xbox One-exclusive digital subscription service that allows members to demo most EA games before release. Last month, early access to Battlefield Hardline was offered to subscribers 6 days before release for a total of 10 hours of play time.

This is likely to be the case for Star Wars Battlefront, though EA has yet to confirm any details publicly. We’ve reached out for word.

DICE and EA will unveil Star Wars Battlefront gameplay footage and details for the first time this Friday during the Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, CA. A gameplay trailer will debut online during an EA-hosted panel starting at 10:30AM PST.

Star Wars Battlefront launches on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC later this year.

The International Dota 2 Championship 2015 Website & DotaTV Beta Now Live

Dota 2 fans are in for two weeks of the year’s biggest online arena battles as The International Championship 2015 quickly approaches.

The tournament’s official website is now live, providing an overview of the event, details on scheduling, information on participating teams, and much more. The Main Event doesn’t kick off until August 3-8, but leading up to it is a day of Wild Card battles on July 26 and four days of Group Stage battles July 27-30.

There are a number of ways one can watch The International as it unfolds. If not in person at the Key Arena in Seattle, WA, you can also follow along via the just-launched beta for DotaTV. Matches are broadcast at up to 1080p and 60 frames per second, featuring real-time stats, graphs, and match data. You can also watch by joining a local Pubstomp (find listings in your area right here), or at home through YouTube Live or Twitch. If you’re new to Dota, be sure to tune into the Newcomer Show once a day during the Main Event.

On the site, you’ll also find a breakdown of the tournament’s current prize pool, which, as of this writing, sits around only $100K away from a whopping $17M. That also means that this rather large list of stretch goal rewards will be unlocked for those who contributed.

Destiny – Bungie Is Nerfing The Thorn, Ice Breaker, & Gjallarhorn In Update 2.0’s Major Weapon Pass

Destiny Update 2.0, set to launch shortly before the release of The Taken King DLC on September 15, aims to make some of the biggest weapon balance changes to the game’s sandbox since Update 1.1.1 last February.

That includes a handful of much-needed and long sought-after changes to weapons like the infamous Thorn, as well as the entire Auto Rifle weapon class. But, according to the notes from Bungie’s latest Weekly Update, it also introduces a few tweaks you probably weren’t expecting, for better or worse. Though a lot of what’s in the following weapon-related notes for Update 2.0 sounds like a major improvement, some of your favorite and most-used weapons are going to take a hit, including the Ice Breaker, the Black Hammer, and the almighty Gjallarhorn.

Sit back down in that chair. Before you get too ahead of yourself, you’ll want to hear out Bungie Sandbox Designer Jon Weisnewski on the reasoning behind each and every adjustment in his own post right here. If you just want the notes, simply keep scrolling. There is much to read.

Oh, and be sure to share some of your reactions in the comments section below. Do you think some of the tweaks and changes were unecessary, or does it all sound right to you?

Weapon Balance Changes

AUTO RIFLES

Goals:

  • Auto Rifle is optimal at close to medium range
  • Damage, Stability, and Range are tuned such that players desire Stability for reliable close quarters damage, or Range for better accuracy and increased damage at a distance
  • Elevate Auto Rifles so they are a more competitive option in PVP, and simultaneously more satisfying to use in PVE

Changes:

  • Increase base damage
  • Start damage falloff closer to the player to emphasize its role as a close to medium range weapon
  • Small reduction in base stability. Landing shots at optimal range is unaffected, but repeated precision hits require more weapon control to land consistently
  • Boost damage by 10% against AI combatants

PULSE RIFLES

Goals:

  • Pulse Rifle is optimal at medium range, but can still effectively engage enemies at close or medium-long range
  • Rate of Fire sets a pace for players to track moving targets, and then deliver precision damage in bursts
  • Pulse Rifles should feel strong in PVP, but don’t become the only competitive option
  • Additionally increase their efficiency as a PVE weapon

Changes:

  • Reduce base damage of the medium RoF by about 2.5%
    • PVP: Bursts-to-kill (all precision hits) is 2 or 3, depending on victim’s Armor stat
  • Small reduction in base stability. A burst should still land all shots at optimal range, but three precision hits will require more weapon control to land consistently
  • Increase magazine size on for all base inventory stats

SCOUT RIFLES

Goals:

  • Scout Rifles are the best Primary Weapon for long range engagements
  • Scout Rifles perform best when landing paced precision shots
  • Rate of Fire and Optics are tuned so that Scout Rifles are a little harder to use effectively close in

Changes:

  • Increase base damage for medium to high Rate of Fire Scout Rifles
    • PVP: Does not affect TTK in PVP on a Guardian with full health
  • Increase magazine size for all base inventory stats
  • Reduce Final Accuracy when firing from hip
    • Fast firing outside of ADS will be less accurate
  • Boost damage by 5% against AI combatants

HAND CANNONS

Goals:

  • Hand Cannons are optimal at close to medium range
  • Hand Cannons are optimal when shots are paced, but become less effective when fired quickly
  • Rewards agility under fire, precision targeting, and snap shots
  • Hand Cannons cannot reliably compete with Scout Rifles at long range

Changes:

  • Start damage falloff closer to the player to limit long range lethality
  • Small reduction in ADS accuracy, targeted at making long range snap-shooting less reliable
  • Reduce final accuracy when firing from hip
    • Fast firing from hip is less reliable
  • Reduce magazine size for all base inventory stats
  • Reduce base Optics (zoom) for all Hand Cannons
    • ADS now grants more width in favor of depth

SHOTGUNS

Goals:

  • Shotgun is most effective at very close range
  • Complements melee attacks and other close-quarters class builds
  • Offensively closing on an enemy with a Shotgun is a risk/reward timing game
  • Curb Shotgun effectiveness in PVE slightly to reintroduce some risk when closing on a powerful enemy

Changes:

  • Shotgun perks that enhance lethality at range should be less effective when combined with a high initial Range stat:
    • Reduce Shot Package Accuracy buff by 30%
    • Rangefinder adds a 5% base Range increase on ADS (was 20%)
  • Reduce Precision Damage multiplier on Shotguns by 10%
  • Reduce damage against AI combatants by 10%

FUSION RIFLES

Goals:

  • Fusion Rifles are optimal at mid-range, where targets are easier to track but they’re not close enough to attack while charging up
  • Requires combat foresight and the ability to predict a target’s movement to use successfully
  • It should not be easy to find and build a Fusion Rifle that can achieve maximum Range

Changes:

  • Slow charging, high Impact Fusion Rifles have decreased Range values
    • Makes it more difficult to max out Range for these weapons
  • Projectile Speed for Fusion Rifles is slightly reduced
    • Emphasizes the need to lead a targets outside medium range
  • Improve Accuracy for short range Fusion Rifles
  • Reduce Accuracy for long range Fusion Rifles

SNIPER RIFLES

Goals:

  • Sniper Rifles are optimal at long range, and difficult to use for medium to short range combat
  • Sniper Rifles reward thumb skill with high damage against precision targets
  • The Final Round perk on Sniper Rifles should still require precision shots

Changes:

  • Final Round on Sniper Rifles buffs precision damage only, not base damage
    • This change only affects this perk when combined with Sniper Rifles

ROCKET LAUNCHERS

Goals:

  • Rocket Launchers deal massive AoE damage from a distance
  • Rockets are optimal when placed in the middle of a group

Changes:

  • Slight increase in base Blast Radius.
  • Grenades and Horseshoes proximity detonation reduced

Exotic Weapon Tuning

HARD LIGHT

Changes:

  • Increase base Stability to 80 (was 65)
  • Increase bounce count for Hard Light projectiles
  • Hard Light projectiles are not affected by Damage Falloff

NECHROCHASM

Changes:

  • Increase base Stability to 60 (was 40)
  • Increase magazine size
  • Cursebringer perk will always trigger on a precision kill
  • Cursebringer explosion has increased radius and deals more damage

THE LAST WORD

  • Reduce Range stat to 10 (was 20), reduce Stability to 20 (was 30).
  • Reduce effective range while in ADS.
  • Increase accuracy and precision damage aim assist scale when firing from the hip. “Get three coffins ready.”
  • Fixed bugs with Hipfire damage bonus applying incorrectly

THORN

Changes:

  • Reduce base damage of Thorn’s Mark of the Devourer DoT (Damage over Time) to roughly 1/3 of what it was in PVP and PVE
  • Allow DoT to stack up to 5x across multiple landed projectiles
    • This is a net buff for Thorn’s DoT, but reduces the lethality of the weapon in PVP

HAWKMOON

Changes:

  • Add a stack limit to Luck in the Chamber and Holding Aces so that only 2 of the bonus perks will ever stack on one round. This should prevent Hawkmoon from 1-hit killing full health players in PVP
  • Add 2 rounds to Hawkmoon’s magazine when Holding Aces is unlocked
  • Luck in the Chamber damage bonus reduced by 3%

ICE BREAKER

Changes:

  • Increase recharge time for Ice Breaker rounds to 1 every 8 seconds. Was 1 round every 5 seconds

NO LAND BEYOND

Changes:

  • Increase weapon handling speed for faster time to aim, ready, and stow
  • Adjust sights to fix overlap/parallax issue while aimed
  • Increase time decay of The Master to 8 seconds
  • Add an additional 20% Precision Damage bonus while The Master is active

BLACK HAMMER

Changes:

  • Increase ammo inventory to 18 rounds
  • White Nail perk now pulls ammo from your inventory

LORD OF WOLVES

Changes:

  • Tripled recovery boost bonus for allies granted by Lord of Wolves

GJALLARHORN

Changes:

  • Reduce damage of Wolfpack Rounds

Weapon Stats

Reduced Base Weapon Stats

“We reduced the base stat value of a few targeted stats across various weapon types. Specifically, we focused on the stats for a given weapon type that typically enhance performance the most and made those starting values slightly lower.”

“Also, this change is only being made to weapons newly available in The Taken King, so your base stats for everything from launch through House of Wolves remain consistent.”

Stat Perk Tuning Pass

“We have gone back to all of these stat perks [Send It, Hammer Forged, Field Scout, Perfect Balance, etc.] and reduced the amount that they buff your weapon stat, and this change was made retroactively against all year one weapon talent grids.”

“To compensate for the weaker stat perks from launch weapons, we added some new stat perks (which have already showed up on your House of Wolves weapons) that do provide a significant increase to a stat in exchange for a reduction in other stats.”

Stat Perk column on Talent Grids

“Lastly, we wanted to ensure that if we were introducing Stat Perks that asked you to reduce a stat, we never forced you into doing that by placing that perk on an unavoidable node. Talent Grids will almost always unlock in the order of: small benefit -> medium benefit or another small benefit choice -> large benefit with a tradeoff. The only node in that column you have to unlock is the first one. From then on it is up to the player which node they want activated at any given time.”

Metal Gear Solid Developer Kojima Productions Disbanded, Branding Removed From The Phantom Pain Box Art

Over the past months, reports of a fallout between Publisher Konami and developer Kojima Productions, led by well-liked game designer Hideo Kojima, have been circulating the web.

With the removal of nearly anything related to Kojima on Konami products, it was all but confirmed to be true. Now, Japanese voice actor for Metal Gear Solid’s iconic protagonist, Snake, has put these rumors to rest in a heartfelt goodbye to Kojima Productions.

Taking to his Twitter account, Otsuka Akio had this to say:

“Kojima Productions was forced to disband, but it appears that the work that the team has been putting their utmost effort into is nearly complete. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I expect it will become their greatest masterpiece. I couldn’t help it. I just wanted to say ‘Kept you waiting, huh?’ (Laughs.) But even if this is the end, Metal Gear Solid is immortal!”

More recently, it was discovered that ties to Kojima on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s box cover, including the logo and the “A Hideo Kojima Game” stamp, have been removed. Here’s a comparison of the before and after.

After:

Though we are confident that the future of the Metal Gear franchise will continue on without the team, we just aren’t sure if that’s a future we want to see. For nearly two decades, the team has devoted themselves to delivering gamers one of the greatest franchises to-date. To see them leave on such bad terms is just heartbreaking.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain arrives on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on September 1.

New Weapon DLC Announced For Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, More To Come In Future Releases

Coming to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare next week, Sledgehammer Games’ latest DLC offering will give fans on Xbox One three new weapons to unlock, the Blunderbuss Shotgun, STG44 Assault Rifle, and SVO Sniper Rifle.

The free weapon pack will arrive on July 21, says Sledgehammer in a recent blog post, eventually making its way to fans on PlayStation 4 and PC at a later date. Each weapon and their variants can be unlocked via Supply Drops or Advanced Supply Drops, save for the base variant for the Blunderbuss, which will arrive unlocked under the Shotgun category in Create-a-Class on July 21. As for the STG44 and SVO, their base variants will be unlocked once any of their other variants are discovered in a drop.

UPDATE: Sledgehammer Games has updated their blog post to read that, like the STG44 and SVO, the base variant of the Blunderbuss will be unlocked after earning a variant in Supply Drops or Advanced Supply Drops: “The Blunderbuss base weapon will be unlocked once you receive one of the variants. So in order to use the base weapon, you’ll first have to receive one of the ten variants of the Blunderbuss in an Advanced Supply Drop or Supply Drop, then the base weapon will be unlocked in Create a Class.”

You can have a look at some of the variants below, as well as a small blurb from Sledgehammer Games on each new weapon:

AW-NewWeapons-Blunderbuss-1920x1080_v01

“The Blunderbuss is a short range shotgun that packs a punch. Delivering a great amount of damage up close in a wide spread, it has the drawback of a slow reload speed between the single shots.”

AW-NewWeapons-STG44-1920x1080_v01

“The STG44 makes a return to Call of Duty as a new Assault Rifle available in multiplayer. Known for its solid accuracy and manageable fire-rate, the STG44 works great for medium range combat situations.”

AW-NewWeapons-SVO-1920x1080_v01

“The SVO is a semi-automatic Sniper Rifle with great accuracy the trade-off being increased recoil.”

According to Sledgehammer, next week’s drop is only the first set of three weapons the studio is adding to Advanced Warfare over the course of the next few months, but more on that is to come. As a reminder, these weapons will only be available on current-generation consoles and PC due to the hardware limitations of previous-generation consoles.

Which new gun are you most looking forward to unlocking?

Nintendo CEO, Satoru Iwata, Passes Away At Age 55

In a shocking and very heartbreaking statement that Nintendo released today, Nintendo’s CEO Satoru Iwata has passed away.

“Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth,” the company said in their statement.

Iwata had to skip E3 last year to undergo surgery to remove the cancer, which unfortunately wasn’t successful, in the end. A visionary, a man that the Nintendo fans would grow to love and respect over the years, Iwata will forever be missed.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Multiplayer Beta Get 5-Day Exclusivity On PlayStation 4

Just last week, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 developer Treyarch announced that the game’s PlayStation 4 multiplayer beta would begin on August 19, leaving out details on the duration of both the beta and its exclusivity on Sony’s console.

As pointed out by Call of Duty fans attending this year’s Comic-Con, that info appears to have been made apparent by a batch of 30-day PlayStation Plus trial cards that were handed out to all attendees of the Black Ops 3 Zombies Escape Room Challenge.

According to details found on the card, the game’s PlayStation 4 beta will last for five days, beginning on August 19 and ending on August 23. It has yet to be confirmed if the beta will then continue past that date as a multi-platform beta, providing access to Xbox One and PC users in addition, or if it will re-launch at a later date as a multi-platform beta.

If it plays out anything like the beta for Destiny — also an Activision game — did last year, it will likely run for five days exclusively on the PlayStation 4, enter a period of maintenance for two to three days, and then return as a multi-platform beta on all three platforms for another five days. That’s just our guess, though. Expect more official details soon.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 launches on all platforms November 6.
