  • The Scourged Map modifier that causes you to shift into Nightmare on reaching maximum Blood now has a slight drain of Blood over time, though the amount of Blood lost on Killing a Scourge Monster has been reduced to 0.4% (previously 0.5%). It also now causes you to lose all Blood when you shift out of Nightmare.
  • Scourged Maps that shift into Nightmare on reaching maximum Blood can no longer teleport you into an Incursion upon shifting out of Nightmare.

Other Improvements

  • The damage of the Delve Spider Flicker Strike skill has been reduced.
  • The damage of the exploding pods in the Stagnation Map boss fight has been reduced.
  • The Rank 1 Defences Crafting Bench options now have a cost of 4 Orbs of Transmutation (previously 6 Orbs of Alteration).

  • Fixed a bug where the effects of the Wind Dancer Keystone Passive could be triggered from being hit by a spell.
  • Fixed a bug where the Lethality Notable Passive was not affecting rain skills.

  • Fixed a bug where the Veiled Suffix modifier on Bows which grants a percentage to Fire Damage over Time Multiplier was using two-handed values.

  • Fixed a bug where the Stagnation Map boss could sometimes summon vines at their location, rather than their target’s location.
  • Fixed a bug where Jaesyn and Maker of Mires were unable to create clones in the Hallowed Ground Unique Map.
  • Fixed a bug where the Reef Map boss could continue to spawn minions after dying.
  • Fixed a bug where Delve darkness damage over time was slightly higher than intended at depths shallower than 1000.
  • Fixed a bug where opening a Chronicle of Atzoatl did not grant credit toward the Assist the Forsaken Masters Challenge.
  • Fixed a bug where party members could not interact with Zana mission portals after leaving the mission area.
  • Fixed a bug where party members were sometimes unable to see the party leader’s map portals in a Guild Hideout.
  • Fixed a bug where Monsters in Nightmare could prevent discovered Hideouts from being fully cleared.
  • Fixed two instance crashes.

3.16.0c Patch Notes

This patch contains some improvements to the Scourge League, particularly for Scourged Maps, and fixes a few small- and medium-importance bugs.

Scourge Improvements

  • Scourged items found in Maps now always drop as Scourged Tier 3, with Scourged items found in Part 2 of the campaign now always dropping as Scourged Tier 2.
  • Due to the above change, the number of Scourged items found in Maps has been reduced, with a slight reduction also made to the number of Scourged items found in Part 2 of the campaign. This results in more Scourged items that match the level of content you are doing.
  • The Exposed to Corruption debuff now provides 2% more Quantity and Rarity of Items found from Scourge Monsters (previously 1% more), and is no longer affected by the standard Item Quantity and Rarity diminishing returns for players.
  • Scourged Maps can no longer generate the following modifiers: Item Quantity, Item Rarity, Pack Size, and Experience. Existing maps with these modifiers will retain them and can be upgraded as normal.
  • Scourged Maps can still get the +X Additional Item Types from Rare Scourge Monsters modifiers. Due to the absence of the other modifiers, these modifiers have become a lot more common, dramatically increasing the rewards from Scourged Maps.
  • The Scourged Map modifier that causes Rare Monsters to drop an additional Currency Item now causes Rare Monsters to drop two additional Currency Items.
  • The required amount of Corruption Absorbed to transform a Map has been reduced for all Tiers.
  • The Scourged Map modifier that causes Monsters in Nightmare to take less Damage now has a value of 9% at Scourged Tier 1 (previously 15%). This change does not affect existing items with this modifier.
  • The damage of the Pale Angel Beam skill has been reduced.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug where Breachstone modifiers that caused Rare Breach Monsters to drop additional Currency Items or Divination Cards were not functioning correctly.
  • Fixed a bug where Ballista Totems summoned through Ballista Totem Support were taking more damage than intended.
  • Fixed a bug where challenges which require defeating a boss without being hit by a specific ability were being completed even if you were hit by that ability.
  • Fixed a bug where the Bountiful Traps Prophecy could not be triggered.

3.16.0c Hotfix:

  • Fixed a bug that could cause your map portals to disappear until you reentered your hideout.

3.16.0c Hotfix 2:

  • Fixed a bug where tier 14 and higher blighted maps were dropping fewer oils than intended.
  • Fixed a bug which prevented some players from opening a citadel map from Zana.

3.16.0b Patch Notes

Notes from 3.16.0b that were not included in the 3.16.0 Console Release are now included.

Scourge Improvements

  • Upon encountering a Boss in Nightmare, the drain of blood from the Crucible is now paused for 5 seconds.
  • The damage of Ravenous Bloodshaper’s Blood Orb and Spike Barrage skills has been decreased.
  • The damage of Demon Herder’s Vomit and Beam skill has been decreased.
  • Reduced the number of Monsters with Proximity Shield that can spawn in some Scourge encounters.
  • The Corruption Absorbed progress bar now displays underneath items stored in the Blood Crucible, without you having to hover over them.

Other Improvements

  • The damage of Baranite Thaumaturge’s ground explosions has been decreased. This change does not affect Baranite Thaumaturge Spectres.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug where Item Filters would incorrectly assign Weapons and Jewellery a BaseDefencePercentile value of 0 rather than 100.
  • Fixed a bug where the Guardian’s Challenge Divination Card sold by Zana did not have a price.
  • Fixed a bug where Mansion Contracts sold by Whakano did not have a price.

3.16.0b Hotfix:

  • Fixed a common client crash that could occur when changing areas.

For Mass Effect N7 Day 2021, the studio announced a contest, and other nifty stuff that fans will enjoy.

For those wondering, there is no new info regarding the upcoming Mass Effect game, though there is info on what the franchise means to the developers.

In addition to the events, stickers and other stuff, BioWare has also dived deeper into the Mass Effect Legendary Edition player stats! While the most popular player choices have been revealed earlier this year, the studio gave an even more in-depth look! We’ve chopped up the infographic into bite-sized images in the gallery for an easier read.

Finally, over on Twitter, the studio revealed a new image for Mass Effect! Well, it’s more of a new concept art or something, but we’ll take what we can get!

BioWare ended the blog post by re-affirming that the studio is hard at work on the next entry in the Mass Effect universe, though there’s no new info to share. If you want to read the notes from the devs, head on over to the BioWare blog.

If you still haven’t trekked through the universe yet, go check out our Mass Effect Legendary Edition review! It’s one heck of a ride, and you’ll get caught up with Commander Shepard’s tale by the end.

Battlefield Portal BF3 Weapons, Leaked BF2042 Gameplay, Screenshots Revealed

With yesterday’s big news that a particular player has managed to get into the Battlefield 2042 game client before its official launch this November 19 (and early access on November 12), more info regarding Battlefield Portal, and the game itself has surfaced. While the base game might only feature 22 weapons at launch, the Battlefield Portal BF3 weapons list won’t be as limited, and the entire arsenal for each class has leaked!

Once again, thanks to Aaronfrogger, check out the Battlefield Portal BF3 weapons list that players will be able to tinker with come launch!

Recon:

Support:

Assault:

Engineer:

For some reason, Battlefield 3’s available list of weapons in BF Portal dwarfs that of the main game, which is surprising to be honest. That said, I do expect Battlefield Portral to be part of every Battlefield player’s regular rotation. I mean, who wouldn’t want to dive into BF3 again, no?

For those who can’t wait, and want to see more gameplay of Battlefield 2042, Aaronfrogger has hosted a ton of screens, gameplay clips and more, on a Google Drive. We won’t be hosting any of that here on MP1st since we don’t want EA’s attack dogs sicced on us.

The wait won’t be long now, as early access for Battlefield 2042 is set for Friday, November 12, this coming week! We’ll have more info regarding the game leading up to launch, so stay tuned.

More Battlefield Reading:

Killzone 2 Online Multiplayer Servers Have Been Unofficially Resurrected

Well, here’s something that might get you to dust off the old PS3. A group of dedicated fans have seemingly restored online functionality to Guerilla Games’ 2009 title, Killzone 2 online multiplayer! Known as PSONE (PlayStation online emulated,) this is a group of fans who’s sole goal is to restore online functionality to some of the highly popular titles from PlayStation that have now been shutdown. Their past projects have included Warhawk and Twisted Metal Black, with plans to restore other online titles such as Socom Confrontation, Wipeout HD, and even PlayStation Home.

PS Online Network Emulated is an ongoing attempt to reactivate the online mode of multiple PlayStation Games. Being available since 2002 the PS is a pretty old game console. Despite its age, there are still people wanting to play online. Some just love to get reminded of old times, some want to enjoy games which simply have no equivalent counterpart on more modern consoles. Sony decided to stop hosting any game servers, which rendered some games unusable or at least hard to use.

However, while the latter are all still being worked on, the team has revealed that their latest restoration has finally arrived, and it’s none other than Killzone 2! Yup, the very same Killzone 2 that had its servers shut down almost four years ago. Here’s what the team had to say on their Discord channel:

The release will be public for the PS3. RPCS3 users will need to be whitelisted by the PSONE staff for now. Will we do the best to bring a stable server, please again, keep in mind that we will all test something new here.

The server is an emulation of the original server, it doesn’t come shipped with all the features of the original servers. It’s a work in progress, these features require more time and I’m sure people can’t wait more.

And while the core online experience is working, the team still has plenty of work left to do as they’ve revealed a number of features that are still not functioning.

Unavailable features at launch :

  • Community features (clan, mailbox, tournaments)
  • Statistics (ribbons, medals, rank, valor rank)
  • Trophies – Official dedicated game rooms
  • Secondary badges Since stats are not available, all the players will have the highest rank and the purple ribbon.

As for the requirements to get the multiplayer back up and running?

Requirements

  • An internet access (should allow custom dns servers)
  • A PlayStation Network account
  • A PlayStation 3 (No jailbreak needed as this is intended for legit consoles)
  • A copy of Killzone 2

That’s it! Well that, and redirecting the DNS on your PS3 to the correct one. To get started on that, just follow their “Getting Started” guide.

Have to say, this is one of the coolest projects out there. While most PS3 owners most likely have already moved on to either the PS4 or PS5, it’s nice knowing that I can still experience some of these great multiplayer offerings from PlayStation at any time, despite the server shutdowns.

Guerrilla Games had shutdown the servers for both Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 back in March of 2018, issuing the following statement:

On March 29th, 2018, after more than six years of operation and countless battles between the ISA and the Helghast, the online servers for Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 will be decommissioned. The single player campaign for both games will remain accessible, but online play and related functionality will no longer work.

As we near the end of the online lifecycle for Killzone 2 and Killzone 3, we’d like to express how grateful we are for all the support and feedback we’ve received from the community over the last eight years. Your enthusiasm is what drove us to hone our craft and grow as a studio. We hope you enjoyed playing Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 online as much as we did creating them.

As of today, the only (for consoles, Mercenaries is working on Vita still) official online functioning multiplayer in the Killzone franchise is Killzone: Shadowfall, which launched with the PS4 back in 2013. No word on how much longer those servers will stay up, though Guerilla Games recently retired the official Killzone website preventing players in Shadowfall from creating new clans.

Marvel’s Avengers Perks, Gear and Resources Rework Explained – Here’s What’s Coming

Just a few days ago, Crystal Dynamics announced that not only will Marvel’s Avengers get the Klaw Raid, (and for PlayStation gamers) and Spider-Man on November 30, but this will be released alongside update 2.2, which will also provide a massive Marvel’s Avengers perks, resourcesand gear rework!

Thankfully, we don’t have to wait until the end of the month to find out what’s changing, and how. Crystal Dynamics’ Alex Kende, has outlined how these things will change in a info-filled post, which you can read about below.

Marvel’s Avengers Perks Rework – How Is It Changing in Update 2.2?

There are several changes to gear we will be introducing in patch 2.2 on November 30.

Several improvements to Hero gear have been made to make those rewards a bit more appealing when compared to normal gear. Whether this is fixing bugs with Perks, or rearranging Perks, we wanted to offer more options to players looking for more variety in builds.

Due to community feedback, we have also added Status effects to gear for Heroes who are currently missing them. All of them. Every single one.

That means Hulk will have Cryo Perks, Ms. Marvel will have Plasma Perks, and Iron Man will have Shock Perks for his weapons. These Perks will be added to either Specialty gear from Vendors, Omega gear (for Hulk), or Hivemind gear.

We have also updated the rewards for Omega Level Threat: Family Reunion. We’ve heard the feedback that you want less variance in stat rolls for Omega gear and want more opportunities to get them. Rather than remove Perks to address one of these issues, we have made the mission drop Omega gear for every completion. This gear will not improve a Hero’s Power Level, but it will provide more chances to get a roll players want. We have removed the Minor Artifact awarded and replaced it with Fragments as a part for the Resource rework we’ll talk about below.

There’s also a chance for an additional JARVIS or other set gear to drop in case you wanted another source of that.

Furthermore, due to feedback and internal testing, several Perks have been updated where the specific trigger plays a bigger factor on the percent chance of a Perk activating.

For example, the trigger of “being damaged” which is a passive, very easy event, has a lower base chance to activate the buff or perk it’s on. Perks focused on defeating an enemy under a certain Status effect have been increased to be the second highest based percentage right behind teammate revival due to these triggers being more difficult to achieve.

This is of course all affected by Proficiency and older gear that rolled with a higher percent chance will retain its value until it is upgraded. Once upgraded, it will have the newer value.

Marvel’s Avengers Perks Rework – How Is It Changing Starting November 30?

Since the launch of the game, we have had various resources that are gathered and used to upgrade items. In the 2.2 update, we are streamlining that system to be more user friendly.

From a high level, we are removing the need for Catalysts, Nanotubes, Nanites, Plasma, and Uru. We will grant a number of Fragments, Upgrade Modules, and Polychoron to players for these resources and remove them from the UI.

When players log in, they will be notified of the resources being retired, and what resources they will get in exchange. We may bring some of the retired resources back in the future if there is a clear need for a new resource to support any new or updated systems we release.

In patch 2.2, the only resources needed to upgrade gear and Minor Artifacts will be Fragments and Upgrade Modules. Major Artifacts will now require a mix of Fragments and Polychoron.

This also means we need to rework areas that currently grant resources as rewards. The following list shows what the changes will be.

  • Dismantling Gear – Dismantling gear will now reward the player with Fragments, Upgrade Modules, and rarely Polychoron, based on the rarity of the gear.
  • Enemies – Defeating enemies will now only drop Fragments in quantity and frequency based on the size and difficulty of the enemy. Some smaller enemies will not drop any Fragments at all, while normal Adaptoids drop Fragments most of the time, and enemies such as Blitz Dreadbots and Elite Exos drop more Fragments more often.
  • Mission Rewards – All missions that had a non-standard resource as a reward will have it replaced with fragments in larger amounts. All missions and mission chains have some Fragments or Upgrade Modules as a part of their reward with the amount increasing based on type of mission.
  • Strongboxes – Only a few strongboxes will continue to give out Fragments as the others will focus on higher-quality gear. Large strongboxes and Stockpile strongboxes will focus on giving out resources with Stockpile strongboxes also awarding Upgrade Modules. Silver, Gold, SHIELD Cache, and DNA Strongboxes will not award Fragments or Upgrade Modules.
  • Gear and Faction Vendors – With no need for the retired resources, we have removed all the resource conversion options from all vendors and replaced them with specialty gear offerings similar to the Wakandan Gear Vendor. Each Vendor has different offerings that can improve as your hero increases their Power Level. Most of these specialty offers will have a higher Fragment cost when compared to the normal gear. The prices for all gear have also been adjusted to account for the focus on Fragments.
  • Challenge Card Rewards – Some rewards on Challenge Cards gave resource packs, so these have all been replaced or adjusted. The Rare Resource bundles have been removed and, in its place, will be a bundle of Fragments or Upgrade Modules. The Exotic resource bundle no longer gives Uru and grants more Polychoron than before.

Marvel’s Avengers Gear Rework – Upgrading Requirement Changes

Gear should be important. We want players to hold onto gear they find is cool or helps them achieve a desired playstyle without the need to re-play activities when the reach the power level limit to get another version of that gear.

So we have introduced the new upgrading system allowing players to infuse their gear and increase its Power Level along with the players progression.

The gear you like can now be carried along your journey to max Power Level, with a few rules.

Updated Requirements

Only gear that meets the following requirements can now be upgraded:

  • Quality – Only Epic or higher quality gear can be upgraded or used to upgrade gear.
  • Slot – Gear can only be upgraded with gear in the same slot – ranged gear can only be upgraded using ranged gear. Minor Artifacts share the pool of gear they have access to.
  • Power Level – The upgrade system only uses gear above PL 100. So even if your Hero is above PL 100, the gear itself must be at least PL 100.

Upgrade Costs

Players will now be able to improve the Power Level of an item by consuming a higher Power Level item and paying the upgrade cost. The cost is Fragments and Upgrade Modules and will be modified based on a few factors.

· The upgrade cost will be increased if the rarity of the gear piece is less than the gear piece being upgraded. For example, if players use an Epic gear piece to upgrade a Legendary, the upgrade cost will be higher. Conversely, players will get a discount consuming a higher-quality item to upgrade something else.

· The upgrade cost is also based on the Power Level difference. If an Epic gear piece is being used to upgrade another Epic gear piece from Power Level 100 to 101, then the cost will be 100 Fragments and 10 Upgrade Modules. That cost increases per Power Level upgraded.

· The same gear being upgraded from Power Level 100 to PL 102 will cost 200 Fragments and 20 Upgrade Modules.

These costs start increasing beyond Power Level 140 and do not include the rarity modifications.

Process

When you view gear above PL 100, you will see a new prompt at the bottom for upgrading.

This will bring a new menu of gear that is applicable to be used for upgrading. You can then view the costs to upgrade and preview what the final result will be after upgrading.

Below is an example of the cost difference in consuming a higher-quality item. Note that the resulting attributes are the same regardless of the quality of item consumed.

Older Gear

So, what is happening to the gear you already have, upgraded, saved, etc?

First, all gear dropping in this update will now have all perks unlocked by default, doing away with the upgrade requirement. Second, all gear will be the Power Level it is before the patch. An upgraded item at PL 140 will be 140 after the change and a PL 130 un-upgraded item will be PL 130 but all the perks will be unlocked.

Power Cap

After the update, all existing Epic or higher gear pieces can be upgraded to Power level 140.

You can upgrade gear to Power Level 150 with items obtained by completing both the Omega Level Threat: Family Reunion and the Discordant Sound Raid mission chains.

You can obtain gear up to Power Level 165 by completing the Elite version of the Discordant Sound Raid and either equipping the rewards from the mission chain or using them to upgrade existing gear.

Now that’s a lot to chew on! Crystal Dynamics has also mentioned that more details regarding the Klaw Raid rewards will be revealed in a future blog post. Don’t forget, the studio will be showcasing Spider-Man on the next dev stream this coming Friday!

By now, PC gamers with AMD graphic cards are probably well aware of all the features that come with AMD FidelityFX, such as super resolution, ambient occlusion, variable shading, and others, but today we are going to be looking at FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (CAS). Here is a detailed description (via AMD’s GPUOpen site).

AMD FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (CAS) provides a mixed ability to sharpen and optionally scale an image. The algorithm adjusts the amount of sharpening per pixel to target an even level of sharpness across the image. Areas of the input image that are already sharp are sharpened less, while areas that lack detail are sharpened more. This allows for higher overall natural visual sharpness with fewer artifacts.

CAS was designed to help increase the quality of existing Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA) solutions. TAA often introduces a variable amount of blur due to temporal feedback. The adaptive sharpening provided by CAS is ideal to restore detail in images produced after TAA .

CAS’ optional scaling capability is designed to support Dynamic Resolution Scaling (DRS). DRS changes render resolution every frame, which requires scaling prior to compositing the fixed-resolution User Interface (UI). CAS supports both up-sampling and down-sampling in the same single pass that applies sharpening.

Basically, it improves overall image quality by sharpening details that are usually blurry. It’s a great option to have, especially for those wanting to get the best possible picture out of their games, which brings us to Call of Duty: Vanguard, the latest yearly iteration of Call of Duty. While it should come as no surprise to anyone that Vanguard supports both Nvidia DLSS, and AMD FidelityFX on PC, what many may not know is that next-gen console players also can experience a bit of this themselves, as the option for AMD FidelityFX CAS is supported on both the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.

How to Enable AMD FidelityFX CAS for Call of Duty Vanguard on the PS5 or Xbox Series

Enabling AMD FidelityFX CAS for Call of Duty Vanguard on either the PS5 or Xbox Series is very easy. All you have to do is boot up Call of Duty Vanguard, and from the settings menu (accessible either from the main menu or in-game) you will want to navigate to the graphics tab. From here, you will see “FidelityFX CAS” towards the bottom of the graphic options.

See, told you it was easy, and if you want you can even edit the strength of the feature, scaling from 0 up to 100. By default, it’s set to 80.

Call of Duty Vanguard FidelityFX CAS Support Tested (PS5)

So I guess you might be wondering why anyone would want to turn this on? Well if it wasn’t already obvious, this option enhances the overall sharpness of a scene. However, the real question is by how much is it actually an improvement? Well at lot, even if you don’t notice it at first hand. With the option turned on, we decided to do a bit of comparison between different scenes.

While at first glance it may not seem to offer much an improvement, upon further inspection it became very clear of what kind of benefits a player can get with FidelityFX CAS.

We have included other close up shots from other sections of the game that you can see below.

If you look closely at the floor and the box, you can see there is an increase in sharpness, better high lighting textures on the floor and objects.

If you look closely at the floor and the box, you can see there is an increase in sharpness when Fidelity FX is turned on.

Small bumps on the crate are now noticeable.

This one is a bit of a further away view, but if you look at the wall, the shadow from the tree, and even the words on the posters, you can clearly see how much more of an improvement Fidelity FX is when it is turned on.

A wooden sign that shows increased in details.

Same image above, just a zoomed in case you needed to see the differences better.

This one is just a close up of a wall (about 200% zoomed). It’s not as noticeable as the ones above because of how small the details are, but this gives you an idea that Fidelity FX improves even the smallest of details.

Does This Work in Multiplayer?

Yes, the same improvements above can also be seen in the multiplayer. In fact, those complaining about the environments and other things blending into each other may want to have this option turned on as it helps with objects in the distance.

I think you guys are getting the idea here.

Overall, I have to say I am surprised by the results as the differences in actual gameplay didn’t seem all that big. I don’t see a reason why anyone wouldn’t want to have FidelityFX CAS enabled on consoles, especially since it seem to have zero affect on the general frame-rate. There’s a lot of perks to being able to see things better, especially when it comes to competitive play.

What do you guys think, is FidelityFX CAS the kind of game changer consoles need? Or were you expecting a bigger difference?

Stay tuned to our review of Vanguard hitting the site soon.

Report: Battlefield 2042 Weapon Count at 22; Gun Customization & Camos Screens Leaked

It seems someone is already playing Battlefield 2042! With the Xbox pre-load of the game going live today, a user by the name of Aaronfrogger uploaded a bunch of info and gameplay! Multiple threads on the game’s subreddit have surfaced today, and some of them confirm that the Battlefield 2042 weapon count is at 22, which is quite a low amount.

In the image below via Aaronfrogger, it shows the complete Battlefield 2042 weapons list available at launch, and there’s 22 shown.

Based on the image, there are:

  • 4 Assault Rifles
  • 4 Submachine Guns
  • 2 Lightmachine Guns
  • 3 Sniper Rifles
  • 3 Pistols
  • 3 Marksman Rifles (DMRs)
  • 3 Utility Weapons

Also part of the leak, we get to see the weapon customization menu in Battlefield 2042, as well as a bunch of gu camos that players can unlock! Gamers will be able to customize their gun’s sights, ammunition, underbarrel attachment, barrel attachment.

Regarding the weapon count being only 22, bear in mind that the game hasn’t officially launched yet, and there is a chance that DICE adds more with the day-one patch (though unlikely). That said, the game is centered on live services, so expect weapons to be part of the content drop throughout its lifecycle. Still, that’s not a lot of weapon to play with. Hopefully, they’re balanced enough that each one feels distinct and useful.

In other Battlefield news, EA CEO Andrew Wilson states that the Battlefield 2042 beta feedback was “overwhelmingly positive,” and feels good about player demand for the game.

Battlefield 2042 will officially launch this November 19 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. You can check out the pre-load dates and times here.

Devil May Cry Netflix Series Confirmed for 8 Episodes, Will Feature Vergil and Lady

The folks behind the critically acclaimed Castlevania animated series are taking on another popular franchise, as the Devil May Cry Netflix series has been confirmed for eight episodes, and it will feature fan favorite characters Vergil and Lady as well!

Speaking t0 IGN about the progress of the series, producer Adi Shankar says that the scripts for the first season are done and that the series will be a multi-season arc. Much like Castlevania, this means that the showrunners are going to take their time telling the story and everything else will connect with succeeding seasons following after.

While no story details have been revealed, Shankar did confirm popular DMC characters Vergil and Lady will be appearing in the series besides series lead Dante himself. That means that the first season may adapt elements from Devil May Cry 3, which first introduced Vergil as Dante’s twin brother and Lady as the first female Devil Hunter the son of Sparda encounters and eventually teams up with for their business in hunting monsters and demons.

Shankar also hilariously confirmed that actor Chris Pratt will not be cast or voicing any character in the Devil May Cry project, and that working together with Capcom has been wonderful — especially with veteran producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi.

The latest Devil May Cry game out is DMC 5: Special Edition, and you can read our review of that updated release here.

No release date has been given for the Devil May Cry Netflix series, but it’s scheduled to go into production sometime in early 2022.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Patent Dives Into Providing a “DLSS”-Like Solution for Better Picture Quality

It would appear that Sony gaming division may be looking into some image and performance improvement solutions along the lines of Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD Fidelity FXSR, as their latest patent explores methods to improve image quality, and filling in missing data via a combination of machine learning and computer-based implementation.

Filed this past April, with it going public at the end of last month, the latest in patent from Sony Interactive Entertainment details a potential solution to offering users better image quality.

Digital images can contain regions of missing or corrupted image data. Missing or corrupted regions are referred to in the art as “holes”. Holes are normally undesirable, and methods of inferring what information is missing or corrupted are employed to fill the holes. Filling holes in images is also referred to as image completion or inpainting.

A variety of processes exist for filling holes in images. Machine learning inference techniques, which rely on trained processes, can fill holes in images with high-quality results. However, machine learning techniques are performance intensive, requiring powerful computer hardware and a large amount of time.

Holes in images arise in image-based rendering systems. For example, where there are two or more images representing perspectives of the same environment, there may be no image data corresponding to an intermediate perspective that a user would like to see. Alternatively, there may be some image data missing from one of the perspectives. Machine learning processes may be used to infer the intermediate perspective and to infer the missing image data. Executing machine learning processes to obtain missing data is computationally costly and time consuming.

An example of an image-based rendering system is a virtual reality device displaying a virtual reality environment. A user wearing a virtual reality headset is presented, by two monitors in the headset, with a representation of a three-dimensional scene. As the user moves their head, a new scene is generated and displayed according to the new position and orientation of the headset. In this way, a user can look around an object in the scene. Areas of the initial scene which become visible in the new scene due to the movement are described as being previously “occluded”. The displayed scenes may be generated by computer hardware in a personal computer or console connected to the headset, or by a cloud-based rendering service remote from the headset. A rate at which image data is supplied to the headset is limited by bandwidth of the connection between the headset and the computer, console, or the cloud-based rendering system. Consequently, sometimes, not all the data required at a given time to entirely construct and display a scene is available due to bandwidth limitations or interruptions. Holes in the image data making up the scene are an undesired result and have a significant negative impact on the immersion experienced by the user.

It goes on to state an advantage of this would reduce the load on a processor of said hardware.

This advantageously enables the hole to be filled quickly and efficiently, while increasing the likelihood of achieving a high-quality result. Nearby pixels having different material identifiers to the hole pixel are more likely to look different to the missing pixel data, than those with matching material identifiers. Therefore, using pixels with the same material identifiers advantageously reduces the computational burden on a processor, while more closely achieving an appropriately filled pixel. The determination of the average may include weighting values of the surrounding pixels to be averaged.

This enables some surrounding pixels to contribute more to the average than others, thereby advantageously increasing the versatility of the filling process according to the image being processed. The second filling process may include a machine learning inference process.

Machine learning inference processes provide high quality image filling results. By providing a machine learning inference process as the second filling process, advantageously an improved balance between speed and quality of image processing is achieved.

Some illustration are provided to outline the flow of the process along with a showcase of some before and after images.

This goes without saying with this being a patent and all, it doesn’t necessarily mean we will ever see this happen. However, the company is no stranger to AI based technology as their latest in the Bravia line of TV, Bravia XR supports what is called “cognitive intelligence”.  The explain:

The way we perceive the world is based on information coming from our eyes and ears to our brain at the same time. Conventional AI can only detect and analyze elements like color, contrast and detail individually. Cognitive Processor XR can cross-analyze every element at once, just as our brains do.

To create this closer-to-reality feeling, Cognitive Processor XR divides the screen into hundreds of zones and recognizes individual objects in these zones better than ever before. What’s more, they can cross-analyze around a few hundred thousand different elements that make up a picture in a second, the same way that our brains work.

What cognitive intelligence looks like:

Of course this is pertaining to their television. However, with the growing support of DLSS and AMD Fidelity FXSR, we don’t think it’s all far fetched that Sony would be developing their own solutions. Guess we will just have to wait and see what the future may hold!
