EA: Apex Legends and Battlefield Battle Royale Two Very Different Types of Experiences, Unique Users Trending Past 3 Million

With Apex Legends having launched just a few days ago, EA has officially entered the battle royale genre. While the game seems to be raking in players, there’s another battle royale mode/game looming on the horizon from the publisher, and it’s none other than Battlefield V’s battle royale mode called Firestorm.

During EA’s earnings call, the publisher was asked by Mike Hickey of Benchmark whether there’s any “tension” between Apex Legends and Battlefield V’s battle royale mode.

Mike Hickey: First I guess on Apex Legends, I guess congrats what an awesome deal, it’s really hard to be surprised and your marketing efforts there were — from Respawn were definitely exceptional buzz is high, I guess looks like Respawn also has a fair amount of work done on a content roadmap we have sustained some engagement, I was curious how you think maybe longer-term in extensions Mobile Asia, esports related to Apex in the Battle Royale genre. And also curious if you feel that there might be a tension between the Battlefield, Battle Royale experience and one that you just served with Apex Legends? Thanks.

Andrew Wilson (EA CEO): And to the second part of your question around Battlefield Firestorm, we think that these while they sit inside the Battle Royale kind of genre, two very different types of experiences. What we’ve seen is the community who want to play these types of games is hundreds of millions of people strong. We think there is an opportunity to deliver the fast-paced play that is Apex Legends and where that game goes to a big part of the community. And then also the strategic play, the vehicle play, the things are unique to a Battlefield Battle Royale mode will offer differentiation of play for a different part of that community, and at some level there may also be some cross over. But given the size of the community, given the very different types of gameplay even inside the Battle Royale genre, we believe those two modes can fit very well together in the community.

Wilson has a point, no? They are both battle royale games, but Apex seems to be the more arcade-y battle royale experience. Of course, we haven’t played a second of Firestorm yet, but we’ll soon get our hands on it as it’s set to launch this March.

Remember when we posted that Apex Legends had over two million players yesterday? Well, it seems they’re close to three million! In the same call, Wilson mentioned that the game was trending “past towards 3 million unique users,” and nearly 600,000 peak and current users in the middle of a Tuesday!

Well it is early, what I can say is that in the first 24 hours we had over 2.5 million unique users trending past towards 3 million unique users and nearly 600,000 peak and current users kind of in the middle of a Tuesday, so it’s very early but the response to the game has been very, very strong. We’ve been the number one views game on Twitch since launch and player sentiment seems to be very, very high right now. – Andrew Wilson

If Apex Legends can maintain this momentum or even close to it, then Fortnite really ha a new competitor that it should be worried about.

For battle royale fans, will you try Battlefield V’s battle royale mode? Do you think the two games’ can co-exist without cannibalizing each other’s playerbase?

EA Targeting Anthem Sales to Be at 5-6 Million Units for the Quarter, “Modest Expectations” for Anthem Live Services

With Anthem set to launch in a just two weeks, BioWare and EA will, for the first time, enter the suddenly-crowded shared world shooter genre popularized by games like Destiny, The Division, Warframe, and more.

While Anthem seems to be a AAA game developed by a big studio, EA says that it has “modest expectations” for Anthem’s (and Battlefield V’s) live services since this is an unproven venture by the publisher, and estimates Anthem sales numbers to be at 5-6 million units sold in the quarter. This was revealed during EA’s earnings call by EA COO & CFO Blake Jorgensen.

We now anticipate fiscal 2019 net bookings of $4.75 billion. This is below our previous expectations, based primarily on performance to date of Battlefield V, mobile, and Origin Access. We model Anthem units in the 5 to 6 million unit range, and do not model material net bookings for Apex Legends in the quarter.

We have modest expectations for Battlefield and Anthem live services, given that they are not yet proven. We continue to refine mobile live services and work on new games.

Mind, 5-6 million units sold is still a lot — especially for a new IP, but we’re not EA, so what do we know, right?

Do you think Anthem will hit those numbers or should EA brace themselves for a letdown?

In other Anthem news, BioWare has announced that over 40 million hours of playtime was amassed during the game’s two-weekend demos. For those who played, the studio also announced that they want to pump out Stronghold missions ASAP, and yes, they will be free.

EA: “Premium” and “New Twist” Take on Titanfall Universe Coming Later This Year

While Respawn has just released Apex Legends, and confirmed that Titanfall 3 isn’t in active development, it seems we’re still going to get something Titanfall-related later this year.

This was revealed by EA CEO Andrew Wilson during the publisher’s latest earnings call. In it, Wilson confirms that this “new twist” on the Titanfall universe will indeed launch later this year, and EA will talk about it in the months ahead.

The Respawn team has a strong plan for Apex Legends that will engage fans for a long time to come. As the live service evolves, Respawn also plans to launch a premium game this year that is a new twist on the Titanfall universe. More to come on that in the months ahead.

During the call, Mike Ng from Goldman Sachs asked about the capacity if Respawn to launch three games in one year given we just had Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is already confirmed to be shipping later this year, and there’s this “premium” Titanfall game that we’ve yet to hear about.

Mike Ng: It seems that in fiscal 2020 Respawn will now be operating or launching three titles between that one, Apex, and Star Wars, could you just talk about Respawn capacity for that? Thank you.

Andrew Wilson: And well, I don’t have more to share on the particulars of what would come in for Titanfall. What I would say is Respawn are a tremendously creative team, they always anticipated that Apex Legends would be a spectacular game in the Battle Royale genre and that they would use that as a ramp point to continue to innovate and deliver a truly creative take on what Titanfall is in a premium context later on the EA.

Don’t forget, Apex Legends is set in the Titanfall universe, so anything’s possible. Given how EA has repeatedly said that this is a “premium” game, that rules out this being a small, indie-ish title. Could it be a Titanfall MOBA game? A new Titanfall first-person shooter but one that’s directly Titanfall 3 but will be set in the same universe? Color us intrigued! With Respawn’s pedigree, it’s understandable to be excited, and we can’t wait to hear more about this new Titanfall game.

What do you think this new Titanfall game will be? Will you still play it even if it doesn’t have walljumping and titans?

Battlefield V Sales Hit 7.1M in Q4 2018; EA Blames Lack of Battle Royale & “Heavily Discounted Competition” as Causes

While a lot of players are having fun with Battlefield V, it seems DICE’s latest game isn’t doing as well as its publisher, Electronic Arts (EA), was hoping it would do commercially.

During the publisher’s quarter earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson, and EA COO & CFO Blake Jorgensen confirmed that the publisher was disappointed with the Battlefield 5 sales figures, and blames how single-player was prioritized over the battle royale mode which is scheduled to be released next month.

In August, we determined that we needed some more time for final adjustments to the core gameplay to fully deliver on the potential of the live service, so we moved the ship date to November to accommodate those goals. Unfortunately, the later release date meant the game launched deeper into a competitive holiday window where heavy price discounting was a big factor. In addition, we also made the decision to prioritize other features, including a single-player experience, at launch over a Battle Royale mode. This year, Battle Royale modes became incredibly popular in shooter games. As a result of these decisions, we struggled to gain momentum and we did not met our sales expectations for the quarter. – Andrew Wilson, EA CEO

We had high expectations for Battlefield V, we expected to grow our existing mobile titles and had anticipated launching two new mobile games. As Andrew outlined, it didn’t play out as we planned. We decided to move Battlefield V into a difficult launch window against heavily discounted competition

The desire to make changes to Battlefield V led us to move its launch into a more difficult window, and prioritizing the single-player campaign over Battle Royale also hurt sales. As a result, we sold 7.3 million units in the quarter, about 1 million less than comprehended by our Q3 guidance. – Blake Jorgensen, EA COO & CFO

While this doesn’t sound well for the title, EA acknowledges that the franchise is “strong,” with the publisher counting on the live services game model to bring in more players to BFV over time.

Do you think EA’s reasons are correct as to why the Battlefield 5 sales figures aren’t up to snuff? Is it due to single-player being prioritized over battle royale? Bad marketing? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

In other Battlefield V news, DICE has outlined some of the announcements set to come this week, which you can read about here.

Apex Legends Player Count Soars Past 2 Million, More Than Doubles Fortnite Viewers

Earlier today, we posted that the Apex Legends player count has surpassed one million unique players in just eight hours of availability. Well, it seems the game is getting even bigger, and reaching more people.

Over on Twitter, Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella mentioned that the Apex Legends player count has doubled overnight!

If that wasn’t impressive enough, Apex Legends seems to be besting the current king of the battle royale hill, Fortnite — at least in terms of Twitch viewers. Currently, Apex Legends has well over 390,000 people tuning in to watch, while Fortnite is at “just” 140,000.

Of course, the fact that Apex Legends has just been released factors heavily in its popularity now, but even so, one would assume that people would be tired of battle royale games, and here’s a new one that just came out of nowhere, and seems to be kicking all kinds of ass.

For those not familiar, Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale game developed by Respawn Entertainment, and is out now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. If you’re looking forward to Titanfall 3, you might have to wait for a long while as Respawn has confirmed that they are not working on the game presently due to Apex Legends.

The Division Endgame Content Was “Very Little” Admits Game Creative Director, Plays in to How Sequel Was Made

If you’ve played the first The Division until the end, chances are you’ve experienced the game’s endgame — or lack thereof — for the first few months since its release. Did you notice how there was an apparent lack of endgame activities in the Division? Yep, you’re not the only one.

Talking about The Division 2 endgame, Creative Director Julian Gerighty admitted that in the first game, the studio launched the game with “very little” in terms of endgame content, though this has since helped the studio shape The sequel endgame stuff given from what they’ve learned.

We launched The first game with very little in terms of endgame content. It was a great campaign, you reached level 30, the endgame started, but it was lacking in activities. We were trying to operate this live game, yet we saw things that weren’t working out for the long term. That’s why a very tough decision was made before patch 1.4, which was to stop the development of all of the planned features and the DLCs to be able to focus on the technological debt and on the improvements to get the game to where we wanted it to be. That all fed into how we’ve set up The Division 2 production-wise, creatively as well.

Speaking of The Division 2 endgame stuff, check out this video where we see gameplay footage of The Division 2’s endgame enemies.

Football Manager Live: Ten Years on from When Football Management Turned MMO

Football Manager is established as the heavyweight sporting strategy series, with each new iteration of the soccer-based management game adding new bells and whistles to a beloved formula. While its community of players is passionate and keen to tell tales of their achievements, the game itself can be an isolated endeavor. Multiple human managers can be added to the same game, but this requires them to be huddled around the same computer.

Football Manager Live

In 2008, Sports Interactive attempted to solve this problem through the launch of Football Manager Live. This revolutionary game brought users into a game world shared with hundreds of fellow managers. The game world retained the core match engine and interface of the Football Manager series, but very much took this once-isolated game into the multiplayer industry.

These managers were tasked with filling their squad with real players, bidding against one another in an eBay-inspired system in order to secure their desired additions. This added a new layer of intrigue to the standard transfer market process; rather than gauging what the AI considers a player to be worth, managers had to place bids in the hope that they could outbid their contemporaries.

Teams were placed in a tiered system, with promotion and relegation present just as in real life. Unlike most online multiplayer games, which pit players head-to-head against whoever happens to be online, the league structure dictated that matches had to be against specific individuals. These matches were completed through the ‘resolve by’ system, in which players had to complete the game by a deadline rather than arrange to meet online at a certain time.

This gave players the freedom that usually comes with an online mode, while still ensuring that the integrity of the competition format remained intact. These adaptions to the transfer system and fixture list successfully translated one of the great single-player games into the online sphere, with many other games likewise making this transition in the subsequent decade.

Adapting to multiplayer

Narrative-driven games like Red Dead Redemption and its 2018 successor take the appeal of their vast open world and combine it with multiplayer elements, which is a useful extension for those who have completed the main story. Another traditionally independent pursuit like online bingo is also making the jump to a more communal experience.

Being able to compete against humans also increases the level of competition in some games. Age of Empires is the definitive military strategy game, but its AI has been criticized for becoming predictable to experienced gamers. As with Football Manager, Age of Empires was classically a single-player immersive endeavor. By introducing multiplayer aspects, players could outwit humans rather than outfox a predictable AI.

Sadly, for those enjoying the tactical elements of the multiplayer mode, Football Manager Live’s servers were shut down in 2011. Gaming in recent years has seen a marked shift towards multiplayer options, with games like Bethesda’s Fallout 76 set as exclusively multiplayer. While FM 2019 does have an online multiplayer element, we’ve yet to see another MMO in this series to carry multiplayer through to its fullest extent.

Each new year of Football Manager sees the introduction of a big new feature by Sports Interactive; could FM 2020 mark the return of a more extensive multiplayer mode that brings back the best aspects of Football Manager Live?

Apex Legends Player Count Passes 1 Million Unique Players in Under 8 Hours Since Launch

In case you didn’t know, Respawn Entertainment and EA rocked the gaming world yesterday by announcing — and releasing — Apex Legends; a free-to-play, battle royale game set in the Titanfall universe. While the game does look good, it’s still entering a heavily crowded battle royale genre.

Well, it seems that doesn’t matter — at least initially — as the Apex Legends player count has already surpassed one million unique players in just eight hours after being available! This was announced by Respawn CEO Vince Zampella over on Twitter.

Pretty amazing, no? And it’s not hard to believe, as over on PSN, I’ve noticed that a lot of people on my friends list were playing Apex Legends the moment it was out.

MP1st will have our hands-on impressions/review of it soon once we’ve given it enough time in the blender.

Don’t forget, the first season of Apex Legends begins next month, and you can read about all the details here.

Looking forward to the next Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 patch? While we did get new stuff to grind for in the Black Market with the Barbarian event, the Black Ops 4 next patch planned that will include weapon tuning fixes, and more will be available later this month!

This was announced by Treyarch over on Twitter, where the studio also shared that “all-new” content will be available in multiplayer, Blackout, and Zombies. While no specific date was given, we do know that later today, we’ll get new playlists in multiplayer, Zombies and Blackout.

TUESDAY • MP: Hardcore Nuketown • MP: Mercenary Nuketown • Zombies: IX Gauntlet (Xbox One/PC) • Blackout: Ambush limited-time mode (Xbox One/PC) THURSDAY • Blackout: New camo progression system and Zero Outfit Unlock mission (Xbox One/PC)

Our next round of weapon balancing updates is planned for 1.13 later this month, along with all-new content in MP, Blackout, and Zombies. The new Pro Series Featured Playlist also continues on all platforms, and Ambush starts its second week in on PS4!

Once the playlist is rolled out later today via  server-side hotfix, we’ll let our readers know. What changes do you want to see in multiplayer? We discussed how the Specialists might be the problem, though it’s one we don’t think will be fixed anytime soon in this feature.

Anthem Had Over 40 Million Hours of Playtime During the 2 Demo Weekends

The Anthem demo has come and gone, and thankfully, the technical issue we’ve experienced during the private demo were practically non-existent. This feat hasn’t escaped BioWare, as the studio has posted a new blog post about this and more.

According to BioWare Head of Live Services Chad Robertson, the “war rooms” at BioWare were tranquil this weekend since there wasn’t any major issues. What’s even more impressive here is, there were over 40 million hours of playtime in the game across the two demo sessions (private, public)! Not bad, no? Not bad; especially considering the first demo weekend had a lot of issues that prevent people from playing.

If you want to see some of the user-created javelins, head on over here.

In other Anthem news, BioWare has mentioned that they want to add more Stronghold missions as soon as possible, and it’ll be free.

For PC players, don’t forget that BioWare has overhauled the controls for the final launch build version which you can read about here.

Respawn Says They’re Not Making Titanfall 3

While Respawn has posted job ads pertaining to what we assumed is for Titanfall 3, and Titanfall 2 fared very well critically (currently at 89 on Metacritic), it seems we won’t be getting Titanfall 3 anytime soon.

Respawn Lead Producer Drew McCoy confirmed this little factoid in a new interview with Eurogamer regarding the studio’s latest game, Apex Legends. To put it plain as day, McCoy mentions that the world thinks Respawn is making Titanfall 3, and they’re not, since Apex Legends is what they were developing instead.

“There are some people who think there are too many battle royale games or it’s a fad, the world thinks we’re making Titanfall 3 and we’re not – this is what we’re making.

“We’re doing a free to play game, with essentially loot boxes, after we were bought by EA, and it’s not Titanfall 3. It’s the perfect recipe for a marketing plan to go awry, so why have that – let’s just ship the game and let players play.” – Drew McCoy, Lead Producer Respawn Entertainment

I can’t deny that I’m sad at this latest bit of news. Titanfall 2 was/is possibly one of the best single-player and multiplayer games of the generation, and it’s sad to know that we won’t see a sequel anytime soon. Let’s hope Apex Legends is good enough to make those longing pains go away.

Apex Legends is now out on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and is free-to-play.

Apex Legends Microtransactions Called “Apex Coins,” Here’s How They’re Priced

With EA’s announcement and release of Apex Legends today, the publisher and Respawn Entertainment has unleashed a new free-to-play battle royale title set in the Titanfall universe. While the game is indeed f2p, that doesn’t mean EA won’t be making money off of it; on the contrary, the publisher is hoping that players will splurge money on the game’s cosmetic items, new heroes and more.

Here’s the official description of Apex Coins via the PlayStation Store:

Apex Coins are an in-game currency that can be used to purchase new customization items for characters and weapons in the direct purchase shop, to purchase cosmetic Apex Packs, or to unlock new characters through the in-game store.

Checking the PlayStation Store, we now know that the Apex Legends microtransactions currency is called “Apex Coins,” and they’re being sold for as low as $4.99 for the Starter Pack which includes the following:

Apex Legends Out Now; First Season Launching in March With “Battle Pass”

To possibly no one’s surprise, EA has now announced via a press release that Apex Legends release date, and it’s available now for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC!

Set in the Titanfall universe, Apex Legends is a squad-based shooter, that’s also free-to-play.

Apex Legends delivers a squad-based battle royale experience with a uniquely Respawn flavor. Players will select from one of eight Legends – each with their own unique abilities and playstyles – and the last team standing wins. Combatants can choose from unique characters like Bloodhound, the tracker who can see recent enemy activity on the map, or Lifeline, a battlefield medic who can shield teammates and bring them back from the brink of death. Balanced squads and teamwork are critical, as each Legend is easy to pick up and learn, but challenging to master.

In the press release, EA has also announced the first season of Apex Legends, and it’ll start this March, and will feature the “Battle Pass,” which will grant access to exclusive cosmetic items earned through gameplay. Apex Legends will follow a seasonal model with each themed season bringing in new content to the game in the form of new weapons, new Legends, new skins and more.
