As part of Fortnite’s upcoming battle royale mode titled Fortnite Battle Royale, the Fortnite servers will be down for an unspecified time early today (September 26). According to Epic Games, the Fortnite down time is expected to start at 4 a.m. EDT (10 a.m. CEST).

Heya folks,

We will be taking extended downtime tomorrow, Sept. 26 beginning at 4:00 a.m. EDT (10:00 a.m. CEST) for our v1.6.3 update, watch our social channels (Twitter/Facebook) for more info during this time!

Thank you

Once the servers are back up, we’ll be sure to update this post.

In other Fortnite news, the game’s battle royale mode is being put to task by none other than the game it’s cribbing, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Bluehole, which is the studio that owns PUBG, has also spoken out on why it’s considering taking “further action” against Fortnite Battle Royale.

EA1.6.4 Release Notes:

Battle Royale

SQUADS

New Duos and Squad match types have been added, alongside Solos.  Play in groups of 2 or up to 4 and fight to eliminate all the other teams!

  • Invite friends to play on your team using the in-game Friends List.
  • Use the “Fill” option to automatically fill your team with other players.
  • When your health falls to zero you’ll be “down but not out” (DBNO).  Your squadmates only have a short amount of time to revive you before your health bar drains.
  • You can see your team members’ status on the HUD, including Health and Shields.
  • Use the map to place location markers which are visible to your team and will display on the compass at the top of the HUD.  Keep an eye out for markers from your squad!
  • Cooperate with team members to build awesome defensive structures!
  • Friendly-fire is enabled, so be careful where you aim!  Intentionally attacking squadmates violates the code of conduct.

The Squad match type (up to four-player teams) is available to play immediately.  Duos (two-player teams) will be activated when there are enough players to support matchmaking in both modes.

SUPPLY DROPS

There is now a chance for Supply Drops to descend from the sky.  These crates contain valuable weapons and items! (Pro-tip: destroying the balloon will make it drop rapidly to the ground.)

Razer Smartphone With Gaming Focus Set for Release by the End of the Year

Video game peripheral maker Razer is not content to supply the tools you use for gaming on any platform; as it’s set to enter the super competitive smartphone market as well.

In a chat with CNBC’s Managing Asia, Razer CEO and co-founder Min-Liang Tan pointed out the burgeoning mobile gaming market, and how the company is indeed working on a Razer smartphone that’s centered on gaming, and what’s more, it’s scheduled to come out at the end of the year!

Mobile gaming is getting massive everywhere – US, Europe, China – and we hope to have products to serve the mobile gamer everywhere in the world. One of the most hotly rumored things about Razer is that we’re coming up with a mobile device. And I can say that we are coming up with a mobile device specifically geared toward gamers and entertainment.

We’re hoping to have it come… by the end of the year, so that’s something we’re working on.

Thoughts on this, people? Is the mobile smartphone market big enough for Razer to throw its hat into the ring? What can Razer do in terms of smartphone gaming that hasn’t been done before by Apple, Samsung, and the rest of the mobile phone makers?

Madden 18 Game-Breaking Formation Renders AI Useless, Fix Coming Soon

The AI in Madden 18 is usually pretty good, often responding to different plays in a logical and sensible manner. However, when the bots are hit with the “Gun Monster” formation, it all hits the fan.

What is supposed to be a new and improved artificial intelligence, which adapts to the gameplay and each separate player’s skill level, simply can’t handle the Gun Monster play. This leads to an easy victory over the bumbling AI.

You can see the play in action here:

This will rarely work against human opponents, and is more of a gimmick.

EA made a fleeting statement regarding the AI errors:

We are aware of an issue with the Gun Monster formation which is causing problems with in-game AI. The issue has been identified, and will be fixed in a forthcoming Title Update.

Have you had any success using the Gun Monster formation?

Xbox One X Supersampling, Production & PUBG Xbox Beta Discussed by Aaron Greenberg

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg took to Twitter to answer some Xbox One X (and PUBG) related questions. It’s always good to see execs interacting on social media, especially when they’re offering new details!

First, we have Greenberg confirming that an Xbox One X demonstration will happen before launch.

Responding to a complaint regarding Xbox One X availability, Greenberg stated that Microsoft is “[making] as many as [they] can!”

An eager PUBG fan wondered when the beta would be coming to Xbox One. Greenberg says “[his team] is working on that now.”

Will the Xbox One X be future-proof, one Twitter user wondered:

I’m especially looking forward to the Xbox One X supersampling demo, as I imagine a lot of potential buyers will still be using 1080p displays.

Are you excited to see more from Xbox One X?

Original Story:

Check your PlayStation 4, Guardians! A new Destiny 2 update (1.05) is out now, and it’s a rather small one. While the maintenance period for Destiny 2 is still on-going (it’ll be done by 12 noon PT), the title update can be downloaded now, and it’s just at a tiny 850MB in size.

We still don’t know the exact patch notes for Destiny 2 update 1.05, but what we do know is that Guided Games and Factions will be tweaked.

Faction Rallies

Now that you’ve defeated Ghaul, we are ready for a special event called Faction Rallies. Starting on September 26 at 2 AM Pacific, you will be able to volunteer your services in support of your favorite faction, or the one that holds the loot you most desire.

Arach Jalaal from Dead Orbit, Lakshmi-2 from Future War Cult, and Executor Hideo of New Monarchy will return to the Tower to ask you to pledge your loyalty. Before you can make this choice, you must first reach Level 20 and gain access to the Tower. You will only be able to pledge to one faction per character.

Once you have chosen your side, your mission will be to return to the wild and complete activities in support of your faction. You can do public events, explore Lost Sectors, complete strikes, clear the raid, or compete in the Crucible. As you complete these activities, you will be rewarded with faction tokens that you can turn in for packages full of loot.

In addition to all of the gear on display above, each faction will be offering a special weapon as a reward to be sold if they emerge victorious. Everyone who pledged to the winning faction will be able to purchase it for 1,000 glimmer. Anyone who did not pledge can still get it, but will have to pay a higher price of 50,000 glimmer.

Guided Raids

Guided Games will become available for seekers seeking clans to show them the mysteries of the Leviathan on Tuesday, September 26, at 10 AM Pacific. It’s just over a week into the Guided Games Beta, and we want to update you on how things are going before we open it up for those brave enough to take on the Raid.
Once we know the exact patch details or if there are any other tweaks, we’ll update the post.

Sea of Thieves Platform-Exclusive Sails Almost Added, However Developers Changed Their Minds

When Sea of Thieves eventually launches sometime in 2018, PC and Xbox players will be able to do battle with one another thanks to cross-play support.

It is certain to be a bloody war, for cross-platform rivalries run deep. Developer Rare knows this and almost added platform-exclusive sails to the game, to further fuel the conflict. PC players would get their own sails, and Xbox players would get theirs. Then, if a PC player spotted an Xbox gamer (or vice versa) at sea, they’d know they were a hardware rival.

Rare ultimately decided against this, choosing to instead “assimilate players as seamlessly as possible.”

Speaking to PC Gamer, Rare’s PC design lead, Ted Timmins, spoke more about this decision:

“We’ve had these conversations internally … What we do have done if there was a massive imbalance [in cross-play]? I thought: Maybe we should just embrace it, and try to settle some 30-year old disputes. We thought about PC players having their own sails and Xbox players having their own sails … But we decided to shy away from that, for now at least, because we spent a lot of time on the balancing side and are keen to assimilate players as seamlessly as possible.”

Would you have wanted to see platform-exclusive sails in the game? Or do you think the platform war is bad enough as it is?

PUBG Exec Explains Issue Against Epic Games, Says They Are Not Claiming to Own the Genre or Game Mode

Just this past week, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) studio Bluehole surprised a lot of people when it publicly called out Epic Games for its Fortnite Battle Royale mode which Bluehole claims is a bit too similar to PUB, and how it referenced Bluehole;s game in the press announcement.

While a lot of people will argue that PUBG itself is a copy of H1Z1 and DayZ, apparently, that’s not why the studio is upset. In a chat with PCGamer, Bluehole VP and Executive Producer Changhan Kim explained the press release barb and why the studio is contemplating “further action” against the company that Bluehole is licensing PUBG’s game engine on (Unreal Engine).

So the first thing that I’d like to clarify is that this is not about the battle royale game mode itself. There were other BR gamemodes earlier this year that were released, like last man standing or GTA 5’s battle royale game mode, and we never raised an issue, and I think it’s great that there’s more competition and everyone should be able to create their own battle royale game mode, and it’s not about the idea itself, it’s about Epic Games, and that wasn’t really clear [in the press release].

We use Unreal Engine to develop PUBG, and we pay a large amount of royalties based on the size of our success to Epic Games, and Epic Games always promoted their licensing models [saying] “We want to support the success indie developers”, and [Bluehole is] this indie developer that has been the most successful one using the Unreal Engine this year, and that’s the problem that I see.

So, battle royale is just about last man standing, it’s a simple game mode, and we’re not claiming any kind of ownership over the game mode or genre itself, it’s not for us to even comment. There were a lot of copycats in China and [in that] industry there is a lot of battle royale games that look exactly [the] same as ours, so we will definitely look into similarities if there are different products that are very similar to our game, but even before we actually looked deeper into how similar [Fortnite Battle Royale] is, we wanted to raise an issue because this is from Epic Games. We could be the biggest indie success story that they have and there will be other indie developers that aspire to succeed like us using Unreal Engine, and they would be concerned, right? So we just wanted to raise an issue and let people know that it can be a problem.

Additionally, Kim adds that the studio is “starting to have concerns” when it comes to technical support from Epic Games as anything they help tweak for PUBG (new features, improving existing tech, etc.) might be copied by Epic Games’ Fortnite Battle Royale.  which is a valid concern if you think about it.

At the time of this writing, Kim has mentioned that they have reached out to Epic Games but have yet to hear a response.

You can read the entire interview which talks about the situation, right here.

Do you agree with Bluehole’s reasoning behind this or is Epic just doing the right marketing push in mentioning PUBG in order to get attention as much as possible?

Call of Duty: WWII War Mode DLC Confirmed

In our Call of Duty: WWII beta impressions piece, I pointed out how fun the annual shooter’s new “War” game mode has been. It’s just you, your team, protecting (or attacking) the objectives. No scorestreaks of any kind will help you, and K/D stuff are thrown out the window (deaths aren’t even shown).

While we were only able to try out one map for War mode in the beta, I assume we’ll see more maps available for it come launch. Well, it seems we can include post-launch to that equation, too!

In a video interview with Jagat Review, Sledgehammer Games’ Scott Whitney confirmed this when he was asked how Sledgehammer will “expand” War mode.

Well, it’s great to hear that you love it; and from everything I’ve heard people in the beta broadly are really enjoying it. And so typically, if a lot of people are enjoying something, that’s a good recipe for getting more of it. So, I know we already have plans to deliver more of that in future expansions and to the extent that there’s appetite and enthusiasm for it in the fanbase, I can only imagine there’ll be more of it.

Of course, this isn’t really all that surprising given Call of Duty has a Season Pass every year and usually, it has a few things included aside from the four maps in a map pack. Will this mean that a new map (or two) for War mode will be in every expansions? One can hope.

Speaking of maps, check out this rumor that states that if you buy the Pro Edition of COD: WWII, you’ll get a remastered version of the Carentan map from COD2. Finally, don’t forget to check out our first look at the game’s zombies in these screenshots.

NBA 2K18 Roster Update Adds Carmelo Anthony to OKC Thunder

If you’re a big NBA fan like I am, then you were most likely shocked by the big trade announcement yesterday that Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks has been traded to the Oklahoma  Thunder in a blockbuster trade that saw Enes Kanter, Doug McDermott and a 2018 second-round draft pick bundled together for the star forward.

While you can manually trade these players in NBA 2K18, you won’t have to as the trade has been reflect in the latest NBA 2K18 roster update that went live last night! This was announced by 2K Games employee, “Ronnie 2K” on Twitter.

If you check the team overall rankings, OKC is now rated as 5th overall, just trailing the Boston Celtics (4th), Cleveland Cavaliers (3rd), San Antonio Spurs (2nd) and of course, the Golden State Warriors as the top team given they just won last year’s championship.

In other NBA 2K18 news, a website took down its negative review of NBA 2K18 after pressure from 2K, which you can read about here.

Paragon PS4 Crashing Issue Being Worked on by Epic Games, Client-Side Update Expected Soon

Developers push out game updates to either add new features and content, or to tweak the game technically or balance things out. Rarely does it happen that when an update goes out, things get worse. However, that’s what exactly what happened with Paragon on the PlayStation 4.

When Epic Games rolled out the v43 Paragon update, it made the game crash 25x the usual rate, which as you can guess, made the game virtually unplayable for some. While Epic rolled out an emergency patch to fix it, it only made it things worse. Epic has now addressed the issues and posted an open message to their players for this Paragon PS4 crashing issue.

Hey friends,

First – yes stability on PS4 took a huge hit with v43 update and yes the emergency patch this morning made that worse overall rather than better. You are right to be super frustrated. We are actively working on understanding and fixing our top crashes and getting fixes out to you guys. I want to make sure we take a minute to give you all a bit more context than “there are known crashes”.

Stability is something we monitor very closely following every patch and respond to aggressively when we identify regressions. With v43 release, we regressed so significantly that by around 6am EDT yesterday we realized that PS4 crash rate was up by over 25x the baseline crash rate across version 42. We immediately called in engineers and QA to start hammering out our top crashes. We submitted a build to Sony certification at midnight EDT and deployed it this morning. Shortly after deployment, we identified that overall crash rate increased by at least 1.5x from already brutal rate. With fixes we made yesterday, new crashes were introduced, resulting in a net decrease in stability.

At this point, we are actively working through our top crashes, engaging additional support beyond the Paragon team. We’ll share updates here as we have them, but the current plan is to ship a PS4 client as soon as possible to fix our top offenders.

Massive updates like v43 can sometimes expose issues at scale that didn’t crop up internally. In this case, we are unfortunately seeing a rather extreme example of that. Thanks for bearing with us and please understand we are working diligently to get back to a stable place ASAP.

EDIT: We are expecting to push a PS4 only client update live tonight in several hours. This patch aims to fix a number of our top crashes occurring on PS4. We expect no downtime for this update.

Thanks,
Jake Lawyer – Lead Live Ops Analyst

As you can see from the post, a PS4-only client update (hotfix) will roll out or has already rolled out that should fix this crashing problem. Let’s hope it does, as MOBA players aren’t exactly known for their patience.

Do you play Paragon on PS4? Is it still crashing or has it been fixed?
