Square Enix to Focus on Games That “Customers Can Enjoy More and Play Longer”

Square Enix‘s president and representative director, Yosuke Matsuda, has spoken about the way that “multiplayer games have taken the lead” over single-player titles, and how Square Enix will focus more on titles that “customers can enjoy more and play longer.”

“Gone are the days in which single-player games were of primary status and multiplayer games secondary. Lately, multiplayer games have taken the lead, and it is standard for games to be designed for long-term play…

To increase customer satisfaction and enhance the lifetime value of the games themselves, [Square Enix] will endeavor to develop games designed not to be played once after launch but that customers can enjoy more and play longer.”

With Final Fantasy XV receiving frequent content updates, including the upcoming “Comrades” multiplayer expansion, it’s clear to see how Square Enix is moving to keep games well-supported after release, in order to keep players coming back.

Do you think it’s wise to focus on games as more of a service?

GT Sport PSVR Gameplay Shows Off The Nurburgring Track

While at Tokyo Games Show this week, DualShockers’ Gieuseppe Nelva managed to get his hands on GT Sport PSVR.

Nelva recorded some gameplay (without audio) of himself playing a 1 vs. 1 race on the 24-hour track “Nurburgring”:

Nelva described the experience as one that probably going to “tip [him] over into buying [his] own headset”:

The first thing I noticed as a complete newcomer to VR racing (besides a few laps on Driveclub VR last year), is that it does take a bit getting used to it, especially when it comes to getting your eyes off the track and on the dashboard. It’s rather easy to get distracted.

That being said, it was definitely an enjoyable experience, and this is probably one of the games (alongside Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner M∀RS) that is finally going to tip me over into buying my own headset, which I have procrastinated for quite a while now. I wish I had more time to familiarize myself with the experience, but unfortunately the timer was extra-strict.

PlayStation VR does need some more killer apps, and it looks like GT Sport in virtual reality could help with hardware sales.

What do you think of Gran Turismo Sport in VR?

PUBG Upcoming Features Detailed in Reddit AMA, Brendan Greene “Would Love to Add a Single-Player Campaign”

With the full launch of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds supposedly just around the corner, Brendan Greene took the time to answer (almost) anything over on Reddit.

I’ve gone ahead and included the most interesting responses below. These either reveal interesting details about Greene himself, or potential PUBG upcoming features.

One user wondered if nighttime maps were being considered, to which Greene responded:

“I have seen a prototype nighttime setting internally and I think you’ll all be surprised at how good it looks. No ETA on when this may get added to the game yet tho, as it will take a lot of work to finish.”

Asked about upcoming maps, Greene said:

“We have plans for more maps for sure. We have the new desert map in production and an Adriatic themed map is also planned. Right now we have no other maps planned, but that’s not to say we won’t create more in the future!”

Greene’s favorite upcoming feature? Vaulting!

“Vaulting! I think it will bring a new level of strategy to the game and I can’t wait to see how players will use it.”

What would Greene most like to see added to the game? A single-player campaign:

“I would love to add a single player campaign to the game. I think the island we have could be a great location for an interesting story, but unfortunatly we just don’t have the time or the resources for this at the moment!”

Players will soon be able to shoot through water:

“We are working on penetration systems, which will include the water.”

Modding support will not be available at launch:

“No, modding support will not be available on full release. We have a lot of work to do before the game is at that state, but it will come, just no ETA yet.”

What will actually be available in the full release:

“So, just to clarify what we will actually 100% be adding for full release:

  1. User interface rework.
  2. Profound debugging of the vehicles physics. (This will be an ongoing process continuing after full release)
  3. Bullet physics rework.
  4. Audio mix and volume rework.
  5. Client heavy optimizations. (This will be an ongoing process continuing after full release)
  6. Network code, predictions and tempo management heavy optimizations. (This will be an ongoing process continuing after full release)
  7. Improving servers stability, and increase in performance and tick rate. (This will be an ongoing process continuing after full release)
  8. 3D Replays.
  9. Vaulting.”

When asked about netcode, and how Bluehole are working to improve it, Greene answered:

“I understand your frustrations, and while I can’t speak to specifics about what and how we will optimise the netcode (as it’s beyond my understanding) we will continue to apply optimisations and work to improve all the things you mentioned.

We are also working to open servers in new regions to ensure all players can play on servers local to them. This just takes time to implement.
At the end of the day we understand that PUBG is a competitive game, and we are commited to ensuring all players have both a stable game to play, and servers perform well.
I would ask everyone to remember that we are only 6 months into Early Access and we didn’t expect the level of success we have seen, so we are still playing catch up in a lot of areas. But as I said before, this is a marathon for us, not a sprint, so improvements will come.”

You can check out the full AMA here, for an assortment of questions, question dodging, and a few more answers!

Red Dead Redemption 2 Date Tease, Possible Story Trailer And/Or Release Date Incoming

Rockstar Games’ official Twitter posted a cryptic image today… Well, it would be cryptic, if not for the Red Dead-esque color scheme and font!

Our money is on either a Red Dead Redemption 2 release date announcement, or a story trailer.

With the game having been delayed until spring, it’d be nice to have a new date to direct our hype towards! Oh, and a story trailer would give us a look at what we’ll be getting up to in the single-player part of the game.

Whatever is it, we’ll know everything on September 28 at 11 a.m. ET.

Developed by the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an epic tale of life in America’s unforgiving heartland. The game’s vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was originally supposed to launch fall 2017, later being pushed back to spring 2018.

What do you hope to see on September 28?

PUBG New Vehicles Incoming, Here’s the First One Revealed

Just to further add to the choas, Bluehole is adding new vehicles in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). This was announced by PlayerUnknown himself, Brendan Greene during a recent Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) where it was revealed that there are three vehicles set to be introduced to the game.

Greene himself shared an image of one of the vehicles, and it might not be what you’re expecting.

Your eyes aren’t deceiving you; that’s really a old-school Volkswagen van. Yes, there’s no actual Volkswagen logo or brand, but it’s the same design. Not bad, no?

In other PUBG news, Bluehole, the studio behind the hit game, is quite upset at Epic Games’ Fortnite Battle Royale for aping what they created.

PUBG Developer Considering Taking Action Against Fortnite Battle Royale Mode for Similarities

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but what if it goes too far? That’s the conundrum Bluehole is in with  PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Epic Games’ Fortnite Battle Royale mode. Bluehole has said that it’s now concerned over the similarities of the two games.

Here’s what Bluehole VP and Executive Produdcer Chang Han Kim had to say:

We’ve had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout PUBG’s development as they are the creators of UE4, the engine we licensed for the game,. After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known.

We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press. This was never discussed with us and we don’t feel that it’s right.

Kim also mentioned that the PUBG community has been providing the studio (Bluehole) with evidence on host ow closely Fortnite is aping PUBG. Bluehole is now “considering further action” on the matter, though nothing specific has been made public yet.

For more background on the PUBG vs Fortnite issue, NeoGAF has given a rather detailed look at the situation where each side’s perspective is given a fair shake.

1.) It’s plausible that this game bothers Bluehole where other games did not as there was a rumor floating around that Tencent was trying to buy Bluehole, and now Epic, which has a ~40-49% ownership by Tencent, is making a similar game. I don’t believe PUBG has had an official launch in China yet either, so due to Tencent, this could beat them to that market. Battle Royale games are very popular in China and Korean companies are very successful in China as well, so there’s a significant business angle there.

2.) Epic and Bluehole did work together to modify Unreal Engine to help support games like this. It’s possible to make an argument that Epic benefited in getting up a competing game due to this.

3.) It is worth noting that Bluehole was actually founded on both corporate theft (they stole Lineage 3’s art assets, design documents, and technology, and lost at the South Korean supreme court) and clone games (Devilian is very much Diablo), so it’s plausible they feel that the legal system is actually an effective way to deal with issues given they’ve lost to it before. Others might see this as hypocritical given nothing was found to be wrong with Devilian.

4.) It’s also worth noting that PUBG is actually a rather late comer in this genre, even if the genre originator was working on it. H1Z1 was a game he contracted to work on (and we’ve never known if he made a deal to keep the rights to the game design after doing so) before joining with Bluehole. Similarly, The Culling has an exceptionally similar design with less players, and released around a year before PUBG did with no work from PlayerUnknown himself, which Bluehole has raised no objection to. It’s worth noting this was also an Unreal Engine 4 game. Daybreak (formerly SOE) has said that PUBG wouldn’t exist without H1Z1, but has not made outward legal threats toward Bluehole.

5.) Bluehole does object to Epic referencing PUBG in their discussions of Fortnite Battle Royale. Now, there are certainly lots of games that do this with terms like Metroidvania or Dark Souls games, but I’m not sure if a legal precedent has been established that this is actually okay to do.

Do you think Fortnite Battle Royale (which will be free starting next week) is copying PUBG a tad too much? Is Bluehole being too paranoid? Let us know your thoughts in the matter in the comments.

Elevate Combat League “Lets Players Sculpt the Arena to Their Advantage,” Gameplay Trailer Shows You How

Atomicon has announced Elevate Combat League, a first-person sci-fi sports-arena shooter.

Elevate Combat League will release on PC, PlayStation and Xbox One, with a release date to be announced later.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GsnInP9eBA

If the trailer asks more questions than it answers, here’s the game’s full description via official press release:

Independent developer, Atomicom, has today announced the development of its latest title, the sci-fi, sports-arena shooter, Elevate Combat League. In the game, players can sculpt the arena to their advantage using exciting skills and weapons. The game’s flagship mode is a deadly contact sport where players will fight for control of a ball with which they can score goals.

In the year 2097, a groundbreaking championship was created for mass entertainment. Soon after, all other sports became obsolete and the Elevate Combat League was born. Within this now dominant sport, armed athletes called Grid Runners fight each other individually or in teams on high-tech sculptable arenas. Players are given skills in order to best their opponents including sculpt, grapple, climb, surf, shield and jet pack. They must utilise their expertise across challenging team and solo modes.

Elevate has been built from the ground up for evenly-matched competition with characters balanced by rank. Players are also able to compete in online leagues based on their ranks. As players rise through the leagues, their skills begin to last longer, resulting in increasingly spectacular encounters. Elevate takes the classic futuristic aesthetic of sci-fi sports and gives players of any level a unique experience. You can never take your eye off the ball…or the arena.

The studio is also working with Lotus TV Macau who will be building a TV series around the game which will air during launch across Southeast Asia. The Lotus league will be a unique league within the game offering high end prizes and live eSports events.

Looks unique, that’s for sure!

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare “Gesture Warfare” Mode Looks Insane! (No, It’s Not April 1)

In what seems to be a late (or early) April Fools’ joke, a ludicrous new mode in which players fight, not with weapons but with gestures, has been added to Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Yep, you read that right! In “Gesture Warfare,” your gun selection doesn’t matter.

Here’s how the mode works:

• Score limit: 20

• 9 predetermined gestures are given to each player in random order. You’ll notice we also replace your menu selected gesture in this mode too.

• What are the gestures you get to use?

  • Head Crush
  • Bang Bang
  • Boom
  • You’re Dead
  • Crush
  • Jackal Toy
  • R-C8 Toy
  • Light It Up
  • Flick

• Every kill with a gesture (or by launching the Flick Black Hole) will cycle to another gesture, like Gun Game

• Not only will you have gestures at your disposal, you’ll also be able to scavenge ammo after getting 1 kill per life. You’ll also have a lethal Throwing Knife. But why add weapons? We want you to play how you want, but with the option of using gestures and the normal combat you’re used to. Also, different gestures have different times to kill, so you’ll still be able to be effective when you get caught in surprise combat situations

• How do you use the gestures? Two ways. You can use the D-pad, which most of you are already comfortable using or you can also use your tactical grenade button

• Why is this a thing? Because we like creating things and well…lunch conversations tend to spark a lot of cool ideas, especially when it’s about how fun it would be to eliminate an enemy with the Bang Bang gesture 😉

• Pro tip! Using the D-pad to kill with a gesture will circumvent the 5 second lethal delay at the start of a match!

Curious? Check out the trailer below:

Sometimes words are not enough. Show the enemy what’s up in Gesture Warfare, a featured mode in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Gesture Warfare will go live from today, September 22 through to Monday, September 25.

Will you be trying out this wacky new mode?

Overwatch Update for PC Squashes Bugs and Removes Maps From Deathmatch & Team Deathmatch Rotation

Blizzard has introduced a new, smaller patch for Overwatch on PC, following this week’s much larger patch across all platforms

The new Overwatch update fixes some minor bug issues and removes the following maps from the Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch rotation: Hanamura, Horizon Lunar Colony, Temple of Anubis and Volskaya Industries. (These can still be selected in Custom Games.)

This update is currently only available for PC, however these fixes will also be made into a future update for PS4 and Xbox One, which will be released at a later date.

Find the full list of changes below:

General

  • The credit that Mercy’s Resurrect contributes toward her on-fire meter has been adjusted to account for the recent changes in its functionality

Arcade updates

  • Hanamura, Horizon Lunar Colony, Temple of Anubis, or Volskaya Industries have been removed from the Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch map rotation, but can still be selected in Custom Games

UI updates

  • Made several adjustments to the spectator camera to improve the viewing experience

General fixes

  • Fixed a bug that caused the audio from Junkertown’s front gate to play when previewing and opening Loot Boxes
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the stagger and knockdown VO from canceling active voice lines
  • Fixed a bug that allowed an incorrect voice line to play when firing D.Va’s Micro Missiles
  • Fixed an issue that caused the spectator camera to lose track of heroes and player-controlled objects (e.g. Junkrat’s Rip-Tire)

Hero fixes

  • Fixed a bug that prevented Genji and Mercy’s ultimate voice lines from functioning properly when the Oni or Winged Victory skins were equipped

Map fixes

  • Fixed an issue that caused sound effects to continuously repeat when using a beam weapon (e.g. Zarya’s Particle Cannon) to destroy the motorcycle in the attackers’ spawn room on Junkertown
  • Fixed an issue that activated audio cues that are typically associated with enemy hits when shooting the motorcycle on Junkertown

Lots of little tweaks to provide further polish to Overwatch‘s online world. Good to see!

NBA 2K18 Review Score Pulled Due to Pressure from 2K Games (Update)

Update:

TheSixthAxis has now posted an update and said that it will reinstate the 3/10 score given 2K has not communicated to them after 24 hours. Additionally, it emphasizes that no blackmailing or pressuring has been made by 2K at all.

Read the entire update from the site right here to see where they’re coming from.

Original Story:

With NBA 2K18‘s questionable implementation of microtransactions causing concern amongst veteran players, many were curious about how they would affect review scores. Just how big of a factor are premium currencies?

Well, according to TheSixthAxis, the presence of microtransactions was enough to lower the game’s score to 3/10.

This is where things start to get a little messy.

Shortly after posting the review, TheSixthAxis removed the 3/10 score due to pressure from 2K Games:

Update: In discussion with 2K Games, we’ve temporarily removed the score pending a statement with regard to our criticisms, at which point it will be reinstated. Additionally, a draft conclusion was posted that incorrectly characterised our score as a protest vote, and has been reworded to reflect that our criticisms are rooted in the effect that VC and microtransactions have on the gameplay.

It’s kind of worrying to see 2K Games pounce on reviewers like this.

Let us know your thoughts down below in the comments!

Call of Duty: WWII Documentary Is All About the “Brotherhood of Heroes”

Continuing its week-long Call of Duty: WWII feature blowout, Activision has today released a seven-minute Call of Duty documentary titled “Brotherhood of Heroes.” It features Sledgehammer Games paying respect to the men and women who fought and participated in the second World War.

Call of Duty: WWII will take players to the front lines of war-torn Western Europe during one of history’s greatest conflicts, where the stakes were high and the only thing standing in the way of Nazi oppression was a generation of ordinary men and women willing to make extraordinary sacrifices to preserve our way of life.

You can check out the other Call of Duty: WWII trailers that were released this week right here.

PC players, don’t forget, an open beta is happening at the end of the month. We also posted a rumor that a map from COD2 might be remade and be part of COD: WWII’s pre-order bonus for the Pro Edition.

Call of Duty: WWII will ship out to retail this November 3 and will be available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
