Bungie: Destiny on Consoles Could Run at 60fps, but It Would “Be Smaller, Less Cooperative, and Have Fewer Monsters”

Before its reveal, many were hoping that Destiny 2 would target 60fps, at least on the new mid-gen upgraded PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. However, even after leaving behind the PS3 and Xbox 360, it was announced that the hotly-anticipated sequel would be running at 30fps, instead using the new consoles’ power to boost resolution and additional visual enhancements. According to Bungie, the consoles’ CPUs were causing a bottleneck.

Many players weren’t happy with this, and took to forums to complain. In an interview with EDGE, Destiny 2‘s Excutive Producer Mark Noseworthy provided an expanded explanation on why Destiny 2 runs at 30fps on consoles, and what it would take to make a Destiny console game run at 60fps:

“It’s about the simulation of the Destiny world. Thirty AI at once, large open spaces, six players, sometimes with vehicles, and dropships coming in; that’s where we’re using the CPU.

Could we make a Destiny game that ran at 60 fps? Yes, but the space would be smaller, it would be less cooperative, and there’d be fewer monsters to shoot. That’s not the game we want to make.

First and foremost, we’re trying to make an incredible action game. We don’t feel we’ve been held back by the choices we’ve made about world simulation versus frame rate; in fact, we think we’re offering a player experience you can’t have elsewhere because of the choices we’re making.”

He went on to explain that, if you really want a Destiny 2 60fps experience, you can invest in a PC:

“But if frame rate is something that’s really important to you, there is a platform now where you can spend as much money as you want, to go as fast as you want.”

With most first-person shooters targeting 60fps as a priority, I can see how Bungie is coming under fire here. However, Destiny 2 is trying to push boundaries where other shooters aren’t. I guess, ultimately, it’s the console players who will decide if forgoing a smooth frame-rate is worth it!

Are you happy playing Destiny 2 on consoles at 30fps? Or would you sacrifice visual flair for a smoother experience?

In Destiny 2 PC news, Bungie has apparently been treating “master race” players “like first class citizens since the first day of development.” If you’re one of those “first class citizens,” you should enter our giveaway to win a PC beta code!

Rainbow Six Siege Operation Blood Orchid DLC Leak: Ela, Lesion & Ying Gameplay

It seems no secrets can be kept regarding the Operation Blood Orchid expansion, with yet another Rainbow Six Siege DLC leak happening. This time we’re getting a look at actual gameplay showing Ela, Lesion and Ying in action.

Check out the video below, in which YouTube user Aquarius showcases the gameplay and gives his thoughts:

Here’s a reminder on what these new operators can do:

ELA – DEF – GRZMOT MINE – Concussion proximity mines that can be anchored on surfaces, impairing hearing and causing a dizzying effect.

YING – ATK – CANDELA – Cluster of flash charges that can either be anchored on surfaces or rolled out as a grenade.

LESION – DEF – GU – Cloaked toxic mines injecting a compound which injures opponents and limits their speed.

What do you think of the new operators, now that you’ve seen them in action? Think they’ll make great additions to the game? I think Ela is my favorite, and the first I’ll try out!

Call of Duty: WWII Beta Level Cap Is 20, PS4 Beta Doesn’t Require PS Plus

Sledgehammer Games has confirmed that the player level cap for the Call of Duty: WWII beta will be 20. Do note that it’s possible for this rank to be increased as the beta progresses, as we’ve seen with previous Call of Duty tests.

Division rank can go up to a maximum of 4, and this will not increased during the beta.

If you’re still a bit foggy on what exactly Divisions are, and why they rank up separately, here’s the official description:

Divisions fundamentally redefines how players invest in their Multiplayer career. Reimagining the create-a-class system, players choose from five iconic World War II divisions each with specific basic combat training, division training and weapon skills. This streamlined approach to Multiplayer gives players the ability to reinforce their individual play styles while dominating the enemy in the world’s greatest conflict.

Those on PS4 who are hoping to partake in the beta, but who don’t have PS Plus, have no need to worry, as it isn’t required. Xbox One players, on the other hand, will need an Xbox Live Gold membership in order to play.

Got all that? Are you ready for the beta, and a return to a CoD where your boots stay firmly on the ground?

If you’re a PC player who’s feeling left out, I’ve got some good news: there’s going to be a PC beta, too

Take a look at the Call of Duty: WWII headquarters mode which holds an impressive 48 players!

Titanfall 2 Player Base Now at Over a Million, Postcards From the Frontier Trailer Out

In case you haven’t played it yet, Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall 2 is quite possibly one of the best shooters out right now. While it’s unfortunate that it was released sandwiched between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, it seems players are wising up to the game’s awesomeness.

Over on this week’s Frontier News Network update by Respawn, the studio has announced that the Titanfall 2 player base is now at over one million players across all three platforms! What’s more, the average time spent per player is currently the highest it’s been in the last six months.

  • Since the release of Monarch’s Reign in May, we’ve seen our playerbase increase every month. Currently we have over a million players across all platforms each month playing multiplayer, and we’re expecting August to be our biggest month of 2017.
  • The average time spent per player is currently the highest it’s been in the last 6 months.
  • Since the launch of Frontier Defense and Titanfall 2 being added to the Vault for EA access members and the release of Ultimate Edition, we’ve seen average daily active users increase by nearly 50% in the last month.
  • Some fun facts around Frontier Defense…
    • Monarch was the most popular Titan Warpaint purchase.
    • Based on completion rate, Wargames has been statistically the most difficult Frontier Defense map and Forwardbase Kodai has been the easiest.
    • Congrats to ItsEthereal, Jack_of_all_Pc, IconicLlama, and TheMegalodonger for being the first team to beat Insane mode. The team here at Respawn had a lot of fun watching that.

Not bad, Respawn. Over on the Titanfall 2 DLC front, the next DLC drop is scheduled for this August 29, and will be called “Postcards From the Frontier.” There’s going to be a bunch of new maps for Frontier Defense, new weapon paints and more. Check out the gallery to see each one.

There’s a new execution called “Hole in the Wall” which needs five Pilot kills from behind Amped Wall to unlock. Two new featured modes are incoming, too.

NEW FEATURED MODES

  • Aegis Titan Brawl
  • Aegis Last Titan Standing

Both of these modes will have the same rules as their originals except you’ll be playing with your Aegis upgraded Titans from Frontier Defense. Now’s the time to get on that grind to max out your Titan so you’re ready on 8/29! We’ll kick things off with Aegis Titan Brawl at launch.

There’s a lot more stuff from banners, community art and more. Check ’em all out here.

Which platform are you playing Titanfall 2 on? Did you notice the spike in player counts?

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ Brendan Greene Warns: “Don’t Treat Your Players Like They’re Stupid”

Though his game is in an “early access” state, and is only available on PC, Brendan Greene already has a wealth of experience in dealing with a huge community of players. As PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds passed its eight million copies sold milestone, Greene took to the Devcom stage and discussed the importance of communicating with your player base.

Green explained that he spends time interacting with the community, listening to their feedback, and trying to keep them happy. He even goes into a Discord chat each Sunday to talk with people.

“Whether it’s hack reports or bug reports, they’re all passed onto the team. It’s sometimes hard to communicate to the community that you do hear everything, even though they don’t believe you. What I do is go into our Discord on a Sunday and just spend two hours in there chatting with people – and people love that, having that connection with your community.”

He went on to say that players “understand game development, or they want to understand it,” and that “the more you communicate and the more that you show them about it, the better it is for you.” Greene, along with the rest of the Bluehole development team, believe “in this really open sense of development, where you don’t treat your players like they’re stupid.”

Greene makes some great points, and I definitely like the sound of it as a consumer. Of course, the man has made some errors when being transparent. The addition of microtransactions while PUBG is still in early access has caused a lot of controversy, for example. Then there’s the matter of console support, and whether the game will be coming exclusively to Xbox One. Greene’s mouth is probably held shut by Microsoft there, but still. Transparency is indeed great, when it’s actually an option.

What do you make of this? Do you think it’s better for developers to be more open with the community?

Elgato 4K60 Pro Allows You To “Capture 4K at 60fps. Flawlessy.”

The Elgato Gaming gamescom 2017 booth has a special hardware addition this year, with the freshly announced Elgato 4K60 Pro available to test and use. Not much information has been shared about the product, only that it will allow the recording of 4K gameplay at 60fps.

As shown in the images below, it’s an internal capture card, meaning you’ll need to plug it into a PC.

Elgato tweeted out three images, along with the words: “Capture 4K at 60fps. Flawlessly.” The photos show the 4K60 Pro sitting atop a pair of monitors, the capture device in use and recording some Horizon Zero Dawn (therefore confirming PS4 Pro support), and the product placed within a PC.

I’ve personally been using the Elgato HD60 Pro since it launched, which has worked flawlessly for all of my work and play. However, with the 4K60 coming, it might be time for an upgrade!

Elgato has stated that there’s “more information coming soon.” Here’s hoping the price isn’t too steep, and the release date isn’t too far away.

Call of Duty: WWII 48-Player Headquarters Mode Gets Its Own Reveal Trailer

A new Call of Duty: WWII trailer has dropped giving us a good look at the game’s Headquarters mode, a social space where up to 48 players can meet, greet, and shoot things.

Check it out:

Warm up in the Firing Range, prove you’re the best in the 1v1 Pit, watch Call of Duty esports matches live in the Theater, man the AA guns to earn rewards, and much more in Call of Duty’s first-ever dedicated social space. Introducing Headquarters, coming to Call of Duty®: WWII Multiplayer on November 3.

It’s described as a “multiplayer headquarters – a dynamic social hub,” where players can “sharpen [their] skills, compete for glory, earn [their] stripes, and socialize.”

I spotted the “Score Streak Training Range.” This should come in handy for practising with higher level rewards, so that I don’t mess up when getting them in-game.

The Headquarters mode reminds me of Battlefield 4‘s Test Range, only with the map opened up to 48 players!

We’ve also been treated to a look at new multiplayer maps, and some gameplay from a pro player.

The private multiplayer beta set to take place this August 25 on the PlayStation 4, and September 1 on the Xbox One.

Brink on PC Is Now Free-To-Play (Yes, That Brink!)

Well, this is a weird one, but a good kind of weird! Brink, which came out over six years ago, is now free-to-play on PC. You can head on over to Steam, add the game to your cart, and install it. I’ve just done it myself!

I’m not sure why Bethesda has decided to do this, but I like it. Moving from paid into free-to-play has proven to be a great move for other games, which after suffering dwindling player counts, are replenished.

If you can’t remember Brink, I’ll slap the official description below, including all of the key features that made the game unique back in 2011:

Brink is an immersive first-person shooter that blends single-player, co-op, and multiplayer gameplay into one seamless experience, allowing you to develop your character whether playing alone, with your friends, or against others online. You decide the combat role you want to assume in the world of Brink as you fight to save yourself and mankind’s last refuge. Brink offers a compelling mix of dynamic battlefields, extensive customization options, and an innovative control system that will keep you coming back for more.

Brink takes place on the Ark, a man-made floating city that is on the brink of all-out civil war. Originally built as an experimental, self-sufficient and 100% “green” habitat, the reported rapid rise of the Earth’s oceans has forced the Ark to become home to not only the original founders and their descendants but also to thousands of refugees. With tensions between the two groups growing, Security and Resistance forces are locked in a heated battle for control of the Ark. Which side will you choose?

KEY FEATURES:

  • Not Just Another Hero – Brink’s advanced player customization offers a near-endless combination of looks for your character – allowing for the appearance of your character to be truly unique. As you progress through the game and acquire more experience, you’ll have even more opportunities for customization.
  • Two Sides to Every Story – Choose to fight through the single player campaign as either a member of the Resistance or the Security and then take your same character online to play cooperatively or competitively against other players.
  • Blurring the Lines – Take your unique character online at any time you choose! Brinkallows you to seamlessly move between your single player campaign, co-op with friends, and intense multiplayer action. Multiplayer takes the story online where you can play with up to seven other people (or AI characters) cooperatively as you take on the opposing faction or with up to 16 players competitively.
  • Play SMART – Brink uses the familiar shooter controls that you’re used to, without frustrating, artificial constraints and adds a new feature: the SMART button. When you press the SMART button, the game dynamically evaluates where you’re trying to get to, and makes it happen. Whether you’re a seasoned FPS veteran or someone just getting started, you’ll be able to make more intelligent decisions during the fast-paced action with SMART.
  • Context-Sensitive Goals and Rewards – Objectives, communications, missions, and inventory selection are all dynamically generated based on your role, your condition, your location, your squad-mates, and the overall status of the battle in all gameplay modes. You’ll always know exactly where to go, what to do when you get there, and what your reward will be for success.

Oh, and here’s our review of the multiplayer! I had to scroll way back into the archive for that!

Will you be helping to populate Brink F2P? What other dead shooter would you like to see revived through free-to-play? (Crytek, give me Crysis 3 F2P, please.)

Battlefield 1 Update Adds Lupkow Pass and Lots of Game Tweaks

With DICE revealing a lot of Battlefield 1 info yesterday at gamescom, the studio didn’t forget the most important people who might not have time to tune in, and that’s the actual players. In case you didn’t know, a Battlefield 1 update rolled out and it adds Lupkow Pass map and lot of tweaks.

LUPKOW PASS

This update brings Battlefield to the snowy ravines of Lupkow Pass. The wintery mountain landscape offers stunning visuals and plenty of opportunities for exciting vertical gameplay. Narrow passages can quickly become corridors of death as the deadly Hussar cavalry of the Russian forces impales enemies on his lance.*

*Lance can be equipped by any faction’s cavalry.

MAPS & MODES

Fixed issue where tank spawns would get blocked by soldiers on Amiens.

Fixed issue where released pigeon prompt would not go away. Pesky pigeons!

Fixed issue where a vehicle could not spawn in Operations for attackers on Mountain Fort. Added Frontlines to Monte Grappa and Ballroom Blitz.

SPECTATOR

Fixed issue where some VFX for the trench periscope would show in 3p mode for spectators.

Fixed issue where the ammo count for the current weapon and grenades was incorrect when spectating someone on a horse.

Fixed issue where spectators would see all scores as 0 in End of Round screen.

Fixed a bug where certain 2d overlays from vehicles would show in tabletop or free cam. Reduced area where spectator camera could fly on Verdun.

WEAPONS

Stationary MGs will no longer deal damage to nearby players when destroyed.

Fixed issue where the receiver of a bayonet charge would not get an audio cue before being hit.

Fixed issue where a 3p soldier would continue to yell (as if they were charging) after the charge was cancelled.

Fixed issue where single-fire or semi-auto weapons could have part of their firing sound cut off if the player switched weapons immediately after firing.

Synchronized weapon firing/muzzle flash correctly to bullet firing and damage screen to improve correctness of replicated bullet logic.

Fixed issue that could cause weapon loadout UI to disappear under certain conditions.

VEHICLES

Airplane rocket crosshair should no longer be faded.

Increased the turn speed of the horse by 25% while standing still.

Triggering a reload while galloping on the horse will no longer cause the horse to stop sprinting.

Horses automatically jumping over obstacles should now be much more reliable.

Fixed an animation bug where the reload animation would play when it shouldn’t have after getting on a horse.

RSP & SERVER

Fixed the issue that updating the VIP or Moderator list causes map rotation to discard map vote result and return to the first map.
Fixed an issue where pre-round countdown would not start when players switch team.

SPAWNING EXPERIENCE

Squad spawning improvements to reduce spawning into enemies.

Minor tweaks to minimize the “Spawn Train” effect.

This is a first part of a bigger initiative to solve squad spawning issues.

UI

Fixed issue with End of Round scoreboard reordering Premium Trials/Premium Friends players.

Fixed navigation issue on Codex screen

Mouse scrolling now works amongst awarded ribbons on the end of round screen

Platoon tags are now correctly displayed for players already on the game server when searching for platoons

Player’s K/D ratio is no longer shown as the squad’s KD ratio on the End of Round screen

Service stars for stationary weapons are now correctly shown as awarded in End of Round screen

An error is no longer shown after joining a newly added friend from the Com Center

Performance improvements to the whole UI and in particular to the Codex and Weapons & Gadgets screens.

OPTIONS

Add Network Smoothing Option inside Advanced Gameplay Options for low ping players.

Added gameplay profile option to select whether on spawn the minimap should be reset to the default zoom or the last zoom state.

Implemented optional combined map zoom (on press) / big map (hold) functionality in a single button mapping.

Added a new option under Controls->Basic to switch between a toggle or hold for sprinting with the horse.

PC – In the keybindings screen mouse mappings are now shown as icons.

NETWORK

Added fix to prevent late damage effects from lossy high ping connections.

Fixed Vegetation destruction delays.

Fixed vehicle destruction so that transition to destroyed state happens flawlessly, this was particularly bad for airplanes when getting destroyed mid-air.

Prevent stacking damage and suppression from high ping players.

OTHER

Fixed an issue where picking up an enemy soldier’s kit would cause the player to start speaking the enemy team’s language.

Added DX12 MGPU support.

Spectating players are no longer prompted with a kicked message when leaving the game server

Fixed issue with party member receiving in invite to play on the current game server

Don’t forget, this BF1 update is mandatory if you want to play BF1 multiplayer. Access to the Lupkow Pass map requires BF1 Premium or the In the Name of the Tsar expansion.

You can check out what DICE has in store for Battlefield 1 from this month until early 2018 right now, too.

Following the lacklustre Xbox gamescom 2017 press event, I looked to EA’s showcase, hoping they could impress.

Battlefield 1 Content Calendar Up to Early 2018 Revealed

While EA fired off a bunch of news regarding Battlefield 1 during its gamescom press conference earlier today, some smaller bits of info might have flown by if you weren’t paying attention.

One of these bits if info that flashed for a few seconds was the Battlefield 1 content calendar.  As part of the announcement for Battlefield 1’s “Revolution,” DICE showed the BF1 content calendar from now up to early 2018. As people can expect, Battlefield 1 Premium content drops are part of the plan, but there’s a few things worth noting such as the November update, which hints at a major balance patch, and the “Operation Campaign” update hitting in October.

If you want a taste of Battlefield 1 Premium, don’t forget, there’s a free trial on-going now. For EU PlayStation 4 players, you can even snag BF1 Premium for 40 percent off the base price for a limited time.

Are you happy with DICE’ post-release content rollout for Battlefield 1? Or is leaning too much for Premium members?
