Xbox One X Doritos Now Available in Mexico, Promotion Includes Xbox One X Giveaway

The combination of Doritos and gaming is nothing new. Often, you’ll see packets of Doritos containing double XP codes for Call of Duty. It’s expected, nowadays.

What isn’t expected, however, is for the Dorito chips themselves to be influenced by video game consoles. Well, it’s time to witness some horrific-looking snacks, as below you’ll find an image of the Xbox One X “Power Up” Doritos, which are now available in Mexico.

According to Reddit user @AtomicJorge, who took the above photos, the Power Up Doritos “taste very good to [him], like grilled jalapeño peppers.”

Hmm, I’ll be taking your word on that one, Jorge!

@AtomicJorge goes on to explain the new promotion between Doritos and Xbox, which includes game controllers and Xbox One X giveaways.

“Xbox Mexico and Doritos are giving away games controllers and even the Xbox One X when it launches, you have to redeem some codes on their website in order to win, the codes are inside the bags.”

Do you want to try one of these Power Up Doritos? I mean, they look vile, right?!

Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition & Xbox One S Minecraft Edition Leaked

The gamescom 2017 leaks keep on coming! This time it’s Microsoft suffering from secrets getting out, with two big console edition reveals now spoiled.

The first leak concerns the upcoming Xbox One X, with an image of the “Project Scorpio Edition” finding its way onto the web.

Take a look at the sleek black console, and its equally sleek box, below!

The second leak is a video of the “Minecraft Limited Edition” Xbox One S. Both the console and controller have been given a heavy dose of Minecraft character. The Xbox One S is painted to look like a dirt block, while the controller is styled to look like a Creeper.

Honestly, it’s refreshing to see a console where the entire shell is customized. Safe and subtle has gotten a little old, so I commend Microsoft for this bold design.

Mass Effect Andromeda DLC Scrapped, Title Updates to Stop

Sad news for Mass Effect Andromeda fans, BioWare has posted an update on the official Mass Effect site to announce that Mass Effect Andromeda won’t be getting any single-player DLC, nor is it getting any updates past 1.10 which was released early this month.

Since the release of Mass Effect™: Andromeda, we’ve worked hard to address feedback from our community. From improving animations to expanding customization options, we looked to respond to your concerns, and build on what you loved.

With each patch, you let us know we were heading in the right direction, and we’re grateful to everyone who joined us on this journey. We’re proud of what we created, and we hope you enjoyed it as well.

Early in development, we decided to focus Mass Effect: Andromeda’s story on the Pathfinder, the exploration of the Andromeda galaxy, and the conflict with the Archon. The game was designed to further expand on the Pathfinder’s journey through this new galaxy with story-based APEX multiplayer missions and we will continue to tell stories in the Andromeda Galaxy through our upcoming comics and novels, including the fate of the quarian ark.

Our last update, 1.10, was the final update for Mass Effect: Andromeda. There are no planned future patches for single-player or in-game story content.

In the coming weeks, our multiplayer team will provide details of their ongoing support and upcoming content, including new multiplayer missions, character kits, and what’s in store for N7 Day.

We appreciate all the millions of people who came with us to the Andromeda galaxy. We hope to see you again in the Mass Effect universe.

On the upside, at least the multiplayer part will still get new content and whatnot. On MetaCritic, ME Andromeda isn’t deemed terrible, it’s just that the first trilogy were awesome experiences that it’s understandably compared to where all things go south.

We hope this isn’t the end of the Mass Effect franchise, but wouldn’t be surprised if it’s put on ice for now.

StarCraft II Multiplayer Update Coming in November, Implements “Major Design Changes”

StarCraft II fans better hold on tight, because Blizzard is planning a big patch to the game’s multiplayer. This update is scheduled for November and will include “major design changes.” The initial list of changes includes tweaks to underused units and abilities, and an attempt to try to reduce sudden game-ending moments. Blizzard has warned that, as with previous patches, this update will “require a large amount of testing, feedback and revision before it can go live for everyone to enjoy.” If you want to experience what the patch does, you’ll need to head to the Testing section of the StarCraft II multiplayer.

As for what’s being buffed, nerfed, and everything in between, take a look at the following list of patch notes!

Economy

In Legacy of the Void we changed the amount of resources in each base to promote expanding and discourage overly defensive playstyles. While this change did have the intended results, we think that there might be a way to make comebacks easier when players are denied a 3rd or 4th base. To do this, we’d like to increase the amount of gas on Vespene gas geysers, as well as the large mineral nodes. This means that bases take longer to completely run out, but since it’s only the large mineral node being adjusted, players are still encouraged to take new bases to increase their mineral income rate. This should also decrease some of the pressure on new players to secure new bases right away.

  • Large mineral nodes at bases are increased from 1500 to 1800 per node
  • Small mineral nodes remain at 900 per node
  • Vespene Geyser value increased from 2000 to 2250 to maintain the mineral to gas ratio

Last year Terran had a major update to its Mech arsenal. This year we are looking into adjusting MULEs to better synergize with Terran Mech, and giving them a bit more flexibly in general. We wanted to also take a look at Terran caster units and see where we could make changes to have them become more useful earlier in the game, or in smaller numbers. In general, we also wanted to improve some under used options and reduce sudden game ending tactics.

Unit Redesign

While the Mule admirably performs its current job as mineral collector, we wanted to experiment with a version that is more flexible for Terran commanders. MULEs will now be able to mine Vespene gas at a rate higher than SCV’s but lose efficiency if more than one MULE is assigned per refinery. In exchange the MULE’s mineral mining rate has been slightly reduced.

Changes:

  • MULEs can now harvest Vespene gas from refineries
  • MULEs harvest 10 Vespene gas per trip
  • MULEs harvest 20 minerals per trip instead of 25

Unit Redesign

We are exploring a redesign of the Raven’s abilities to turn it into a more supportive caster role. Auto Turret and Point Defense Drone are being removed and Seeker Missile is being redesigned. Our goal here is to address feedback that Ravens are only somewhat useful when made in small numbers and become oppressive if massed. Players should now want to make a few Ravens during a game but not have incentive to heavily mass produce Ravens.

The new abilities are: Scrambler Missile, Repair Drone and Shredder Missile.

General:

  • Removal of existing abilities
  • New Ability: Scrambler Missile
  • New Ability: Repair Drone
  • New Ability: Shredder Missile

Scrambler Missile:

Scrambler Missile is an anti-mechanical unit ability that temporarily disables all weapons and unit abilities. This ability is effective against important enemy units to help swing a battle in your favor, even if you are down in supply. Since it disables abilities, this can also be used against Medivacs and Warp Prisms to prevent loading or unloading of units, cutting off retreats or incursions into your base.

  • Cost: 50 Energy
  • Range: 8
  • Effect: Target mechanical unit’s weapons and abilities are disabled for a short time.

Repair Drone

Repair Drone is a deployable unit that is unable to move, but has a repair beam that restores the health of a nearby friendly mechanical unit. The Repair Drone will give Terran Mech commanders a new way to keep their units up and running.

  • Cost: 75 Energy
  • Effect: Deploys a timed life Repair Drone. The drone can target and repair mechanical units that enter the area.

Shredder Missile

Shredder Missile functions like the old Seeker Missile, but on impact it works a bit differently. Instead of doing 100 splash damage it now does 30, but it also decreases the armor of all units hit by 3 for a short duration. This is intended to stack less efficiently with itself than the old Seeker Missile but will be more of a combo ability to use with core units such as Marines, Cyclones or Vikings.

  • Cost: 125 Energy
  • Effect: Deploys a Shredder Missile which activates after a short delay and pursues the target unit, dealing 30 damage on impact and reducing armor by 3 for a short duration.
  • Recalibrated Explosives Upgrade has been removed
  • New Upgrade: Enhanced Munitions
    • Increases the blast radius of Shredder Missile by 20% and its tracking range by 50%

Additional Changes

Widow Mine:

In an effort to reduce certain game ending moments, we want to try making Widow Mines easier to clean up. They will now be revealed when their weapon is reloading, even if they are still burrowed. This should make cleaning up unattended Widow Mines much easier, while still allowing the Widow Mine to perform its splash damage role if properly set up with a Terran army or used defensively.

  • Widow Mines are now revealed while Sentinel Missile is on cooldown.

Ghost:

The illusive and deadly Ghost is already a strong late game tech choice for Terran compositions. However we wanted to try out having the Ghost’s key defensive ability, Cloak, come online faster while balancing this out by breaking out the Mobeius Reactor upgrade and putting it back on the Ghost Academy. This is intended to help players transition into Ghosts more safely in the mid-late game and possibly make Ghosts as an unusual but strategic opening for Terran players.

  • Cloak is now available by default on Ghosts
  • Ghosts now start with 50 energy instead of 75
  • Moebius Reactor is re-added to the Ghost Academy. It provides +25 starting energy to Ghosts

Liberator:

The Liberator is getting a minor design change to its vision when deployed in Defender Mode. Instead of getting a flat vision increase to allow it to fire into its targeting circle it will instead get extra vision within the targeting circle. This lets the Liberator still fire unsupported but makes it easier for opponents to sneak around its vision or attack from alternate angles.

  • No longer gains bonus vision when using Defender Mode
  • Now gains vision of its target location in Defender Mode

Cyclone:

We want the Cyclone’s Lock-On ability to feel a bit more impactful than it does currently. To that end we are making it so that the first four shots will fire rapidly to help increase the guaranteed damage that the Cyclone can deal to its target. We are also introducing a new upgrade to increase the Cyclone’s Lock On damage against armored units. While the Cyclone is not intended as an all around Anti-air option we wanted to try experimenting with giving its Anti-air weapon a bit more long term use.

  • First four shots of Lock On fire more rapidly. Total damage over time remains at 160.
  • New upgrade: Armor Piercing Rockets
    • This upgrade adds +2 armored damage to each of the Cyclone’s missiles during Lock On, +46 armored damage total.

New Upgrade: Smart Servos

This upgrade will make Thors, Hellions, Hellbats and Vikings transform much faster. This is a rather experimental change to see if we can get some more micro out of the Terran transform mechanic. However, we are not targeting Terran siege units such as the Siege Tank and Liberator with this upgrade as we feel it would take away the interesting counter play to those units.

  • Hellion, Hellbat, Thor and Viking transformation times are reduced heavily.
  • Located on the Factory Techlab, requires Armory.

With Protoss we are looking into smoothing out control of certain units within the Protoss arsenal. Especially in regards to their core splash damage options with the High Templar, Colossus and Disruptor. We also wanted to take another look at the early game defenses of Protoss, especially the ubiquitous Mothership Core, and seeing if we could make these defenses revolve more around the basic Protoss early game units. Since these changes are quite large we will be keeping a close eye on how they all work out.

Unit Removal

In perhaps the most experimental, and risky, change of this update we are trying out removing the Mothership Core and moving its early game defense role to the Nexus itself. This is not a minor change and we will be paying close attention to how this plays out during testing. In doing this change, we hope to somewhat simplify Protoss early game defenses by concentrating defensive power in the Nexus itself rather than a specialized unit that moves between them.

Changes:

  • Mothership Core removed
  • Redesigned Nexus Ability: Chrono Boost
  • New Nexus Ability: Mass Recall
  • New Nexus Ability: Shield Restore

Chrono Boost:

We are changing Chrono Boost to behave more like it did during Heart of the Swarm where it costs energy to cast and lasts a fixed duration. Its macro boost rate is overall similar to how the ability currently functions in Legacy of the Void. By moving the macro ability back to being an energy cost there will be interesting decisions to make between spending Nexus energy on macro boosting or defenses.

  • Cost: 50 Energy
  • Duration: 10 seconds
  • Effect: Boosts a building’s work rate by 100%.

Mass Recall:

We have changed how Mass Recall works. Now Mass Recall will bring back units in a target location to the Nexus that cast the ability. This should allow for Protoss players to make the choice to be more active on the map with their units. As games go longer this could increasingly give Protoss players more mobility as they take and hold more bases. We don’t want this to result in super safe army movements, so when units are being recalled they will be unable to attack or move while the ability is being channeled before they are called back to the nexus.

  • Cost: 100 Energy
  • Effect: After 4 seconds all units in target area are teleported to the Nexus. Units are unable to move or attack during this time.

Shield Recharge:

In replacing Photon Overcharge we are trying out a Shield Recharge mechanic. This should allow Protoss players to use more of their combat units for defense. Currently the ability works on both buildings and units so that players can decide if they want to keep important structures alive during all ins or heavy harass.

  • Cost: 1 Energy per 3 shield restored
  • Range: 8
  • Has autocast functionality
  • Can be cast on units or structures

Additional Changes

Stalker:

With the removal of the Mothership Core we are also looking into Protoss’s other early game units. In particular we wanted to try sharpening the role of the Stalker, and make it more of a shoot and move unit with sniping capabilities. To do this we are slowing its attack rate but increasing its damage per shot.

  • Increased Stalker’s Particle Disruptor weapon from 10 (14 vs armored) to 15 (21 vs armored)
  • Increased Particle Disruptor’s weapon period from 1.03 to 1.54
  • Particle Disruptor now gets +2 damage per weapon upgrade, up from +1

Disruptor:

While we like how much micro the current Disruptor provides, we thought that we could try making it do damage more consistently with slightly less game ending potential per shot. To do this we are making it so that the Purification Nova has a triggering detonation circle in the middle of the shot. So if an enemy unit comes in contact with the Purification Nova it will detonate immediately. In exchange the damage per shot is reduced but the cooldown is reduced as well. This allows the Purification Nova to hit more constantly against opposing armies but each shot is less likely to detonate in the center of the enemy forces and cripple them.

  • Purification Nova
    • Purification Nova now detonates on contact with enemy units (not structures)
    • Purification Nova still lasts 2 seconds before detonating
    • Damage reduced from 145 (+55 shields) to 135 (+25 shields)
    • Cooldown reduced from 21 to 18
  • When dropped from a Warp Prism the Disruptor’s Purification Nova will be set to a brief cooldown. As it felt a little too strong vs worker lines otherwise.

Colossus:

As mentioned in previous updates we wanted to take another look at the Colossus role in Protoss splash damage. With the High Templar filling the role of general splash damage, and the Disuptor dealing burst damage we wanted to push the Colossus towards a consistent anti-light armor role. In addition, the Extended Thermal Lance upgrade has perhaps too much power locked behind it for the Colossus’ more niche role. So we are looking into making it easier to obtain.

  • Damage changed from 12 to 10 (15 vs Light)
  • Damage per upgrade changed from 1 to 1 (+1 vs Light)
  • Range increased from 6 to 7
  • Upgrade: Extended Thermal Lance
    • Range upgrade decreased from +3 to +2
    • Cost decreased from 200 / 200 to 150 / 150

Carrier:

For the Carrier we wanted to slightly increase the cost of their Interceptors. We don’t want to remove the Carrier’s role from the game as a powerful end game unit but feedback from the community is that it can overperform in this role due to easily replacing lost Interceptor units.

  • Interceptor cost increased from 10 to 15 minerals

High Templar:

The High Templar’s abilities and role are already in a solid state in Legacy of the Void. Instead we wanted to try making the unit slightly easier to use. To do this we are adding a very low damage auto attack to the High Templar, like in the campaign. This will keep the High Templar further back during fights and avoid its charging heedlessly into danger.

  • Added Psi Blast weapon
    • Range: 6
    • Damage: 4
    • Attack period: 1.25

Mothership:

With the removal of the Mothership Core we have adjusted the abilities of the Mothership itself slightly. This is likely not its final state, but is just a starting point.

  • Now built directly from the Nexus
  • No longer can cast Photon Overcharge
  • Mass Recall now works like the Nexus version above, all units targeted will be recalled to the Mothership

Observer:

While we don’t want to make Protoss ability gameplay any more complicated we wanted to try making Observers more useful for ladder players. Currently Observers are selected with the select all army button (F2 by default) which can often bring Observers out of position and to their untimely demise. While we’d like to keep observers in this selection, we are considering adding the ability to ‘deploy’ your observer for increased vision range in exchange for being unable to move.

  • New ability: Surveillance Mode
    • The observer is unable to move and gains 25% more vision

Since last year’s update, we have seen a number of new strategies and tactics come from the Zerg. This time around we are looking into encouraging more direct interaction with Creep spread from Zerg specialist units and wanted to increase the utility of the Lurker. Additionally we want to look into experimenting with Zerg ground based anti-air options outside of the Queen and Hydralisk. Looking forward as the testing progresses, we want to make sure that Zerg has enough aggressive options before late game so that Zerg players don’t feel heavily pressured into only defensive play.

Unit Redesign

For the Infestor we wanted to try experimenting with making the unit interact more with Creep. We also wanted to see if we could reduce some of the game ending potential of fungal growth while keeping it as a strong disable/area of effect ability.

Changes:
We are changing Fungal Growth to no longer hit air units, and those units hit off Creep will now be slowed instead of rooted. At the same time those units who are hit on Creep are now rooted to the Creep and the overall radius of Fungal Growth is larger. Since this affects Zerg anti-air we will be closely watching this to make sure that Zerg still has sufficient options in this area.

The Infested Terran ability for the Infestor is also being changed. Currently the unit is used as a last resort and we think that there is potential to make it a bit more useful. But we do not want Infested Terrans to become a main army composition. Instead we are trying out having Infested Terrans move into an anti-air role with a weaker anti-ground attack.

Fungal Growth:

  • Radius increased from 2.0 to 2.5
  • No longer hits air units
  • Units hit off Creep have their movement speed reduced by 50%
  • Units hit on Creep are immobilized

Infested Terran:

  • Now benefits from Zerg Missile Attacks and Ground Carapace upgrades.
  • Infested Gauss Rifle damage decreased from 8 to 6
  • Infested Gauss Rifle no longer hits air
  • New Weapon: Acid Spores
    • Projectile
    • Range 6
    • Damage 14
    • Period 0.95
    • Prioritized over ground weapon
  • Infested Terrans spawn much faster on Creep

Unit Redesign

With the Lurker, we like its current role as a zone controller but we think that its current window of use is a bit too small. This is due to a combination of the Lurker Den being soft locked behind the important Hydralisk Muscular Augments upgrade and when games go late detection can heavily reduce their effectiveness.

To address this we have split off the Lurker Den into its own building that can be made from a Drone once a Hydralisk Den has been built. Additionally, we are adding a new upgrade called Digging Claws on the Lurker Den which increases the Lurker’s move speed and burrow speed. Our goal here is to give the Lurker more late-game utility when detectors are more numerous.

Changes:

  • Mutate to Lurker Den removed from Hydralisk Den
  • New Building: Lurker Den
    • Costs 100 minerals / 150 Vespene gas / 86 seconds
  • New Upgrade: Digging Claws
    • Located on Lurker Den
    • Requires Hive
    • Costs 150 minerals / 150 Vespene gas / 56 seconds
    • Reduces burrow time. Increases Lurker movement speed from 4.13 to 4.55

Additional Changes

Viper:

The Viper’s Parasitic Bomb ability is often used as an all or nothing mass cast tactic. You want to get as many Parasitic Bombs ready as possible and cast them all at once to destroy the enemy quickly. We wanted to keep the ability as a strong anti-air option but make it no longer exponentially grow in power. By increasing its damage a Viper user can be more confident about targeted enemies being destroyed.

  • Parasitic Bomb
    • Damage no longer stacks with other Parasitic Bomb effects
    • Damage increased from 60 to 180

Overseer:

Much like the Observer we wanted to try making the Overseer less likely to run to its doom if a player was intending for them to hold position somewhere.

  • New Ability: Oversight
    • The Overseer is unable to move and gains 25% more vision

Swarm Host

For the Swarm Host we wanted to increase the counter play options against them. By slowing down its move speed off Creep to that of the Siege Tank and Immortal opposing players should have an easier time counter attacking Swarm Hosts. Its move speed on Creep is unchanged however, keeping Creep spread very appealing to a Swarm Host user.

  • Move speed off Creep decreased from 4.13 to 3.15

  • Move speed on Creep remains at 5.36

Phew, that’s a lot of tweaks and improvements being made! See any changes you like? Dislike? Let us know.

Ark: Survival Evolved Crossplay Between Xbox One & PS4 Working Internally, But Sony Won’t Allow Public Access

Looks like Sony is spoiling the fun for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 Ark players. Posting on Twitter, an Ark: Survival Evolved developer confirmed that crossplay is actually working internally, but “Sony won’t allow it” to be implemented into the public build.

You can see the dev, Jemery Stieglitz, responding to an eager fan in the tweet below:

It’s good to see an honest developer keeping his community informed. Here’s hoping it doesn’t land him in trouble!

It sounds like Microsoft is all for crossplay, so now we’re just waiting on the big “S” to play nice! Come on Sony, why you gotta be so mean?

What do you make of this news? Want to see Sony and Microsoft work together to implement crossplay? It sure would be cool to see more games sharing their player counts across platforms, helping to boost the longevity of multiplayer titles. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Forza Motorsport 7 Xbox One X Version Benefits From “Dynamic Cube Mapping,” 32 Race Tracks Revealed

Forza Motorsport 7 is preparing to make big leaps over previous games in the series, employing various audio and visual improvements. With competition from Project Cars 2 and Gran Turismo Sport hot on Forza‘s wheels, the game’s going to need every performance enhancement it can get if it hopes to leave the other racing titles in the dust. Bill Geise, Creative Director at Turn 10 Studios, spoke with Official Xbox Magazine about some of the upgrades.

To help them secure that “King of the Racers” crown, the developer is adding dynamic image-based lighting to all platforms, and dynamic HDR skies to the Xbox One S and Xbox One X versions. These were last seen in Forza Horizon 3, and they really helped the game to stand out. Additionally, the Xbox One X (and potentially PC) will be using dynamic cube mapping, a technique that requires a lot of power. This will apparently help “better seat the car in the world.” All versions of the game will also benefit from improved particle effects and ambient occlusion techniques, as well as increased grass density.

Not only should the game look great, but it should sound great, too! Giese went on to explain about the massive effort being put into Forza 7‘s audio:

We want players to see, hear and feel the explosive power of motorsport. For all 700 cars the instrumentation clusters are going to rattle, windshield wipers and mirrors vibrate – it’s that feeling of the car at its peak. We’ve overhauled the audio for our driveline flex, so you can hear the car tearing itself apart. It can be scary, but it feels more alive and grounded than before.

What’s more, 32 different tracks have been revealed for the game, with select environments featuring dynamic weather that will affect gameplay.

  • Brands Hatch
  • Circuit of the Americas
  • Daytona International Speedway
  • Dubai Circuit
  • Homestead-Miami Speedway
  • Maple Valley Raceway
  • Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello
  • Nürburgring
  • Rio de Janeiro
  • Sebring International Raceway
  • Silverstone Racing Circuit
  • Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps
  • Suzuka Circuit
  • Virginia International Raceway

World of Tanks Single Player Campaign Fires Off Next Week

While World of Tanks is mostly seen as a competitive multiplayer-only game — and with good reason, that’s all about to change this month. Wargaming has announced that the free-to-play hit will be getting its own single-player campaign next week on August 22.

Called “War Stories,” World of Tanks’ single-player campaign can be played solo or cooperatively. Wargaming will also add a new tank tutorial to help players ease into the controls and the gameplay. These War Stories are said to be based on historical battles, but with a smattering of alternate history and all that.

World of Tanks can be downloaded now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC for free.

Star Wars Battlefront II Space Battles Footage Leaked

Update: It looks like EA has decided to release the full-length Starfighter Assault trailer. Watch it here!

Just last week, we reported that EA announced that some Star Wars Battlefront II space battles footage would be revealed on August 21 at gamescom 2017. Well, it seems we might have some footage right now!

Thanks to YouTuber “Soloboi,” a super short 30-second Battlefront II space battles trailer has made its way online. With EA most likely having its lawyers take down videos soon, we uploaded it up ourselves just in case it gets taken down. It’s a short trailer. but is supposed to be “in-game footage” and has a few creative liberties sprinkled in. You can watch Yoda flying a craft even.

Will we get more Battlefront II space battles footage come next week? Let’s hope so. Some raw gameplay would be nice, no? Once we get more footage or info, we’ll be sure to let everyone know.

In other Battlefront II news, DICE says the sequel “breaks new ground.”

Are you satisfied with the space combat we’ve seen so far? What can DICE do to make it more special than just aircrafts in a different backdrop compared to the Battlefield franchise?

Halo 5 Warzone Getting Big Changes Soon, Weapon Tuning and More Detailed

343 Industries has posted a rather lengthy update on its official site where it talks about some of the things set to come and change in 2015’s Halo 5. One big change set to come is the Halo 5 Warzone mode.

Here’s what 343 Lead Multiplayer Designer Lawrence Metten had to say about the big Halo 5 Warzone update.

Over time, the Warzone battlefield has changed as players have become more and more skilled at the game mode. However, not all of these changes have benefited all parties – since launch, we’ve slowly seen the Warzone “blowout rate” (how often matches end in lopsided or blowout scores) continue to rise. The Warzone team is experimenting with some significant changes to the way REQ Leveling works to facilitate more balanced Warzone matches.

“These changes adjust the REQ Level awarded for match actions and add a REQ Level “drip” that slowly increases everyone’s REQ Level over the course of each match. In our internal playtesting, these changes have resulted in more back-and-forth Warzone matches with considerably fewer players stuck at low REQ Levels over the course of each game.

“These experimental REQ Level changes do not impact Warzone Firefight or Warzone Assault. We’ll be monitoring game data closely and welcome players to share feedback regarding these changes over in the Waypoint forums.

Expect these changes to take effect sometime next week.

As for weapon tuning updates and all that, 343 Industries has posted a refresher to the changes planned.

  • Halo 5 will receive a Weapon Tuning Update later this Fall that includes adjustments to fourteen weapons and one power-up.
  • The 343 Sandbox Team has two primary goals behind this tuning update:
    • Revitalize and re-balance the Halo 5 sandbox to a more desirable state
    • Establish/strengthen unique roles for each weapon and remove role redundancy
  • As part of this process, players will get a chance to help play and test these changes in the wild to provide data and feedback to the 343 Sandbox Team. Timing and logistic details are still being finalized – stay tuned for more.
  • We will be sharing high level context around the weapons included in the Tuning Update in the weeks leading up to the public test. Note that we will not be sharing the exact specific details for what is being adjusted on each weapon – this is intentional to protect the integrity of the test data (and some of those finer details may change as work continues).
  • When the test has concluded, the final re-tuned weapons will be rolled out across the entire game (Campaign, WZ, and MP).

For this update, 343 will take about tuning adjustments for the Fuel Rod Cannon, Grenade Launcher and Rail Gun.

FUEL ROD CANNON

The Fuel Rod Cannon fills the role of an explosive projectile power weapon with a high rate of fire. The projectiles’ blast radius, coupled with the high rate of fire, has yielded some problematic results in the heat of battle, so the tuning update aims to address that.

GRENADE LAUNCHER

The Grenade Launcher was an awesome addition to the Halo 5 sandbox when it debuted with the Monitor’s Bounty update in December. This weapon fills a unique role – it fires ballistic grenades which detonate with explosive damage after one bounce. As a bonus, the trigger can be held and then released manually to detonate the grenade and add an EMP blast which can stun vehicles for a short time. The tuning update to the Grenade Launcher is aimed at further establishing its role as a mid-tier weapon that’s versatile at applying indirect damage through creative use. This includes how fast the grenade travels, how it bounces, etc…

RAIL GUN

The intended role of the Rail Gun is a “sniper” style of weapon that can be charged up to kill an opponent from mid to long range in a single shot. Currently in Halo 5, the Rail Gun has excelled outside its intended role by being overly effective at close range, and as a snapshot weapon – instead of being a carefully planned, charging Sniper weapon. The tuning adjustments to the Rail Gun are designed to make the weapon require a bit more deliberate, planned usage in battle.

Go check out the update to read up on more Halo 5 and Halo Wars 2 news.

Once the Halo 5 Warzone changes are out, we’ll be sure to let everyone know.

Quake Champions Steam Early Access & Bethesda.net Release Happening Next Week

Prior to its free-to-play full release, Quake Champions is going to made available on Steam and Bethesda.net in an “early access” state. This post-beta (but pre-“proper”-release) launch demands $29.99 from players to access. You might be wondering why Bethesda is asking for money upfront for what is supposed to be a free-to-play title. I mean, I’d be asking that too! Well, it turns out that those who pay and support the game while it’s in early access will earn themselves some goodies.

$29.99 gets you the “Champions Pack”, which includes:

  • All 11 current Champions, including Ranger, Visor, Scalebearer, Nyx, Anarki, Clutch, Sorlag, Galena, Slash, Wolfenstein’s BJ Blazkowicz, and the new DOOM Slayer
  • All future Champions, including at least six additional Champions expected to release before the end of 2018, and any that follow
  • An exclusive Early Access skin for Ranger, available only during the Early Access period for Champions Pack players
  • Three Reliquaries (loot chests containing three in-game items for profile, Champion and weapon customization, including skins, shaders, nameplates and more)

Decide to put down the dollars, and you’ll be able to start playing on August 22.

id Software studio director Tim Willits gave a summary of what the early access build is all about.

With a fast, skill-based game like Quake Champions, nothing is more important than continual testing and refining based on player feedback to ensure the game is balanced, optimized, and fun for all levels of players, from pro to new … The Early Access version of Quake Champions is, obviously, a work-in-progress, but represents a solid and robust version of the game, with four modes, 11 Champions, a variety of maps, and a thriving community of fans. Early Access will allow us to work closely with players to improve the game and add additional features before the official launch of Quake Champions in the coming months.

Will you be jumping in on August 22?

New Zisworks Monitors Output 480fps, Show Benefits of Extremely High Frame-Rates

While some gamers are certainly happy playing console games at 30fps, there are other players out there who appreciate the smoothness of high frame-rates. 60fps is commonly seen on most console first-person shooters, while PC gamers are pushing the demand further, with 120Hz and 144Hz panels being popular choices these days. And, for the true frame-rate addict, there are 240Hz monitors!

Well, that’s cool and all, but the folks over at Zisworks are looking to not just beat 240Hz support, but double it! They have made two high (as hell) refresh rate monitors, a 28″ (X28) and 39″ (X39), with engineering samples available to order.

The catch in all of this is the resolution when 480Hz is selected. Sure, your PC experience is going to be smooth, but it’s going to be awfully pixelated, with 480Hz only being available at 540p.

Increase the resolution and you lower the refresh rate, with 720p outputting at 300Hz, 1080p at 240Hz, and 4K at 120Hz. Of course, those are still very high refresh rates, and monitors that support 4K at 120Hz are hotly-anticipated by enthusiasts.

So, 480Hz at 960×540 then. How does that actually translate when using a PC? Well, the guys over at Blur Busters got themselves a sample and have run a multitude of tests. I’ll let you head on over there to see the methodology and screenshots, but their conclusion resulted in three main advantages: reduced stroboscopic effect/phantom array effect, reduced motion blur, and improved persistence of vision effects.

It seems that 480Hz still boasts advantages worth lusting after! Do you eventually want to game on a 480Hz panel? Or are you aiming even higher? Let me know!
