‘Xbox, Screenshot’ Function ‘On The List For Monthly Updates,’ Says Head of Xbox, Reassures Focus on Games at E3

‘Xbox, record that,’ a phrase uttered daily in the living rooms of millions of Xbox One gamers, is easily what highlights the console’s video recording functionality as one of its most standout features.

But what about the non-existent ability to take in-game screenshots with the press of a couple buttons or through the simple use of voice commands, a function that is oddly missing from the console’s robust feature list? Well, Microsoft may have the answer to that soon.

‘Xbox, screenshot,’ or something along those lines, is coming, according to head of Xbox, Phil Spencer. He made that clear in a recent Twitter response, making mention of “more features to come.”

While the recently announced Kinect-less Xbox One model likely wouldn’t benefit from that particular voice command, grabbing a screenshot or two would ideally only be a few button presses away.

Xbox fans can expect a heavily console and game-focused E3 presentation from Microsoft this year, as Spencer alluded to when he first obtained his new position at the company. That also means potential special announcements surrounding projects like virtual reality are likely out of the question.

To another follower, Spencer reassured Microsoft’s focus on games at E3 2014, mentioning that fans can expect non-gaming-related announcement to follow the expo.

Excited for this year’s media briefing from Microsoft? What sort of announcements are you expecting at E3?

Stay tuned to learn more about Xbox One’s incoming screenshot update.

Incoming Battlefield 4 CTE Improvements May Tweak In-Game Damage Model and Reduce Suppression

Things are looking good for Battlefield 4 as progress is being made in the game’s Community Test Environment (CTE) on PC that opened earlier this month.

Last we heard, participants were noticing a significant improvement in the game’s “netcode” due to an increase in server tick rate. Participants also praised developer DICE’s decision tweak aim-down-sight sensitivity options and to reduce screen shake, which has been known to be rather disorienting for many.

Non-CTE participants will be happy to know that some of these improvements, namely the tweaks made to regular Battlefield 4’s “netcode” are in the works, as DICE VP and GM Karl Magnus Troedsson mentioned in a recent letter. He also explained the studio’s intent to expand the CTE while they “continue testing out new additions, improvements etc.”

Having moved into a new phase of testing, DICE developers working closely with the CTE are now announcing new plans to improve Battlefield 4’s gunplay and weapon mechanics. According to CTE forum users, the studio may test reductions to both Battlefield 4’s suppression and damage models, which should, in turn, help elongate gun fights that many users have complained of being too brief.

With the current damage model and with a more accurate depiction of taking damage thanks to connection improvements, it’s no surprise that players might feel gun fights are being ended perhaps a little too quickly. With that in mind, the potential new tweaks may lend to an experience that is more fair overall.

Battlefield 4 YouTube personality XfactorGaming does a great job rounding up some of the possible upcoming changes coming to the CTE, and ultimately Battlefield 4, so we recommend you check out his latest video above.

What’s your take on Battlefield 4’s current damage model? If the “netcode” were to improve, do you think a reduction in damage and suppression makes sense?

Arma 3 Karts DLC Is No Joke, Download it Today

What began as a harmless April Fools joke is now taking the form of a fully realized piece of downloadable content for Bohemia Interactive’s PC military shooter, Arma 3.

Arma 3 Karts – yes, Karts – is now available to download on Steam for $1.99. But, hold on. Why would you want to pay two whole dollars for a military kart sim add-on? One, it’s fun. Two, a portion of the proceeds from all sales of Arma 3 Karts will be donated to the Czech Red Cross.

The studio says it’s also a way to test their new approach to premium content that aims to prevent splitting Arma 3’s multiplayer community, which you can read more about it here.

You can watch the original April Fool spoof above, and catch some of the DLC’s destructive gameplay action from our friend Luetin09 below:

PS Plus Members Now Get 2 Free Titles For PS4, PS3, and PS Vita Per Month, says Sony

Sony is making some slight changes to your PlayStation Plus subscription, now offering two PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita games per month at no additional cost.

The balance adjustment is much to the benefit of PlayStation 4 owners, which there are quite a few of, who will now get two games per month with a PS Plus subscription, which, of course, offers additional bonuses like being able to play games online.

“PlayStation Plus has been an essential part of PlayStation 4, providing access to next-gen online multiplayer and a steady stream of great games including Resogun, Outlast, Don’t Starve and Mercenary Kings,” writes Sony VP of marketing platform John Koller in a recent PS Blog update. “Since we are always looking to continue evolving PS Plus to be a service that really serves our community, we are excited to provide a more balanced set of games introduced each month with PS Plus. As you’ll see below, starting in June, members will have access to two titles per month for each of our platforms.”

The shift takes place this June. Starting July, look out for the first Tuesday of the month for free titles that will be available until the first Tuesday of the following month and expect the same for subsequent months.

As a protip from Koller, “you don’t have to download the game to your hard drive (or memory card) to gain the entitlement — you can also go to the web store, add them to your cart and check out. Once the game says “Purchased” below it when you’re logged in, you’ll be set for the future as long as you’re a PS Plus member.”

Here’s the line up of free games for June

  • PS4 – Trine 2: Complete Story
  • PS4 – Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate
  • PS3 – NBA 2K14
  • PS3 – Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
  • PS Vita – Terraria
  • PS Vita – Mutant Mudds Deluxe

Unreal Tournament – First Look at Work-In-Progress Deathmatch Gameplay

Developers at Epic Games are lifting the lid off some of the really early work the studio is accomplishing with their upcoming community-driven arena shooter, Unreal Tornament.

The video above shows off the first, very rough version of Unreal Tournament’s Deathmatch game mode with “questionably operational” kill scoring, a “very basic movement prototype,” and a weapon system. Clearly, it’s a work-in-progress, but showing it off at all stages of development is all part of Epic’s philosophy to remain as transparent as possible throughout production, which you can read more about in detail right here.

Senior programmer and project lead Steve Polge said earlier that Deathmatch and team modes would be an initial focus for Epic, before working with creators on introducing vehicle combat.

Unreal Tournament is a completely community-driven project, guided by Epic Games, that will be coming to PC, Mac, and Linux for free.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Invasion DLC First Look, Arrives June 3 on Xbox Live

Continuing along with Call of Duty: Ghosts‘ season of downloadable content, Invasion is arriving Xbox Live on June 3, developer Infinity Ward has announced today.

Three totally new maps are introduced; Pharaoh, Departed, and Mutiny. Meanwhile, it appears that the fan-favorite Modern Warfare 2 map, Favela, will be returning in its original state but with some added polish and the Y-8 Gunship Killstreak.

You’ll also find new Extinction content with Episode 3: Awakening, though we’re not seeing any new weapon offering with Invasion this time around.

You’ll be able to pick up Invasion this June 3 on Xbox Live for $14.99 as a standalone purchase or simply download it at no extra cost if you are already a Season Pass holder.

Catch the debut trailer above and some of the details from the official announcement below:

Departed

Bo1YYzfIEAA5zfm

“Departed” is a medium-sized map set in a rural Mexican town during the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. The colorfully decorated streets, vendor carts and storefronts provide ample cover for run-and-gunners, and players that complete the map’s unique Field Order will unlock the Death Mariachi killstreak. Armed with dual-wielding pistols, the Death Mariachi settles scores, with each kill turning enemy players into another member of the band, and a temporary squad mate.

Pharaoh

Bo1YY0HIMAIQlMn

“Pharaoh” is the abandoned archeological site of an ancient Egyptian palace. Players will have to be on the lookout for collapsing monuments and urns full of flesh-eating scarabs, among other surprises in this multi-level map. Inside the palace, gamers will battle through multiple chambers ideal for close-quarters combat and short-range weapons, all under the watchful eye of Anubis, the half-jackal/half-human, protector of the dead, who will handsomely reward players who unlock this map’s Field Order.

Mutiny

Bo1YY3mIYAAKjbY

Invasion’s third map, “Mutiny,” transports players to a remote Caribbean island harboring an eerie pirate hideout complete with abandoned trading posts and prison cells. Speed and stealth are a must as players navigate the narrow and intertwining pathways. However, let ye be warned that gamers taking up positions on the pirate ship moored in the center of the map will become vulnerable to enemy fire from the numerous flanking routes created by the map’s horseshoe shaped dock. Players that unlock “Mutiny’s” Field Order will find themselves escorted by two ethereal ghost pirates, who will happily send enemy combatants down to Davey Jones’ locker on their behalf.

Favela

Bo1YY3EIQAAx9BW

Invasion’s fourth multiplayer map is a refreshed version of the fan-favorite map from Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 2, “Favela.” Since its original release, the Brazilian shantytown has seen substantial change. Buildings once under construction are now complete, while others have crumbled into a state of disrepair. Players must avoid falling to their death as they traverse the map from one building to the next, with ramshackle scaffolding creating varied pathways between structures, and enemy snipers taking advantage of the long sightlines. Players who complete the Field Order in “Favela” will be able to call in heavy air support from a nearby Y-8 Gunship to bring the rain with a 105mm cannon, a 40mm auto-cannon and a 25mm cannon.

Extinction Episode 3: Awakening

Anchoring the Call of Duty: Ghosts Invasion DLC Pack is the next installment in the game’s Extinction mode episodic narrative, “Episode 3: Awakening.” In Awakening, the team descends into the perilous alien underworld to strike at the subterranean fortress of the Ancestors – the mysterious puppet-masters behind the Cryptid invasion. Armed with a range of new hi-tech weapons and equipment, the team must penetrate a series of defensive barriers to reach the Ark and unlock the secrets of the Ancestors’ psychic powers. As the final battle draws closer, the fate of the Earth and the future of the human race hang in the balance.

Sledgehammer on Advanced Warfare’s Future Setting vs. Black Ops 2, Story to Remain Open For Potential Sequel

With Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and its 2054 setting, developer Sledgehammer Games describes a tough time, in the beginning, defining what the games’s future really was and deciding how deeply it might dive into the world of science fiction.

Ultimately, the studio settled on a rooted and more gritty universe that Call of Duty fans could get sucked into. Sledgehammer co-founders Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield spoke to GameInformer about the process, as well as how it might compare to the future depicted in Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

“I think Call of Duty resonates because it’s believable and relatable,” Condrey said. “And it’s always been one of the strengths of the franchise.”

Condrey explained that the drive to remain rooted, gritty, and relatable crystallized through their research in some of today’s most advanced technology. We saw some of that reflected in Advanced Warfare’s tech that we recently learned more about in greater detail, like the 3D-printer rifle that prints its own ammunition, as well as the plasma-powered rifle and the hover bikes.

“Some of the the things we found through research of what’s going on in the military today and around the world was more fantastic than even the things we were coming up with,” Condrey added. “And so I think that time period and that ability to keep it rooted means that our fans, ourselves – you know, it’s not that fictional leap to a science fiction world you can’t relate to.”

Aside from its alien influence, Condrey mentioned Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp’s film, District 9, as a point of great inspiration.

“Science fiction icons, we stayed away from,” Schofield added to the conversation. “So you won’t see the traditional mech. Even though that may happen, people automatically go, ‘Sci-fi.’ So, we’re kind of trying to stay away from that.”

However, Schofield hinted at some more unexpected surprises to come: “And then, as we get them into the game, and they start to believe the world, [we’re] taking more chances by the end of the game.”

As you may remember, Treyarch’s Black Ops 2 also adopted a near-future setting similar to the one Condrey and Schofield describe in Advanced Warfare. Despite the inevitable comparisons, Schofield believes their take is different enough.

“We do talk with Mark Lamia [Treyarch studio head] and his designers and artists as much as possible, and that’s so that we don’t duplicate things,” he explained. “But I think we realized after the first six months or so when we had this huge amount of information and we had sort of a vision, that if we just kind of followed that and we used Sledgehammer’s style, that we will be different.”

“It’s almost like two artists create a landscape and one’s going to be so much different than the other and I think that there’s enough differences between the two that – I know there’s enough difference between the two that they both can exist.”

Shifting the conversation to the topic of a Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare sequel, Condrey and Schofield were asked if they would ever consider bringing the setting and story to a more fantastic place with more elements of science-fiction.

While their thoughts are still rooted in their current project, Schofield mentioned that “There has to be some thinking of not ruining the story and everything or the world so you can’t have another game.”

“We’re keeping it in a place where another game can exist,” he said.

Check out the full interview with Condrey and Schofield over on GameInformer.

Would you ever play a Call of Duty title developed around science-fiction elements? Maybe even aliens and outer space? Tell us in the comments!

“Major” Battlefield 4 Netcode Update and “More Features” Incoming, DICE “Not Done With Battlefield 4”

As eyes now look towards Battlefield Hardline, Visceral Game’s recently unveiled Battlefield project due out this Fall, DICE vice president and general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson wants dedicated fans to know that the studio is in no way done working on Battlefield 4.

“By now, many of you have probably heard about the next title in the Battlefield series, Battlefield Hardline,” Troedsson wrote in an open letter to Battlefield fans. “The Visceral Studio team has done an amazing job of bringing in a completely new concept while staying true to the Battlefield core gameplay pillars.”

“I’ve been working with Visceral GM Steve Papoutsis and his team for several years on the cops vs. criminals concept and we think you guys are going to love it,” he continued. “We’ve always dared to try new settings and experiences with Battlefield and seeing this new one take shape is a long lasting dream come true.

“That said, I want to be sure you all understand that introducing Hardline in no way means we’re done working on Battlefield 4. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Visceral team is leading the development of Hardline, while the DICE team continues to drive BF4. We are committed to giving you the best BF4 experience possible.”

Troedsson went on to detail some of the key plans put in place to ensure a continued positive experience with one of 2013’s biggest shooters.

Continued Support

“There are dedicated BF4 teams in Stockholm, Uppsala and LA that will continue to address any issues that might occur. But more importantly will also look to make significant additions to the game.”

Netcode Patch

“We are also working on a major update to the Battlefield 4 netcode.”

Community Test Environment

“We launched and are planning to expand our Community Test Environment. You can see the CTE as our labs environment in which we’ll continue testing out new additions, improvements etc. before we go live with them. We’re expanding the CTE program to give more and more players the chance to test new additions.”

More Features

“Other features rolled out recently such as Squad Join, Rent-A-Server and Loadout Presets, many which have been directly requested by you in the community. This trend will continue.”

Already, we’ve seen participants of the Battlefield 4 Community Test Environment express their satisfaction with the ongoing improvements, the most notable being an increase in server tick rate which, in turn, is leading to a better online experience. By the sounds of Troedsson’s note, those improvements may be making their way over to the general player base some time soon. We’ll have to keep our eyes open for details.

Meanwhile, we are also awaiting more details on Battlefield 4’s upcoming multiplayer expansion, Dragon’s Teeth, which was briefly teased in the latest Battlefield 4 Premium trailer.

“Yes, we’re very excited to partner with Visceral on the development of Battlefield Hardline,” Troedsson said in closing. “But ongoing work to refine and enhance BF4 remains a top priority.”

You can read his full sentiments over on the Battlefield Blog.

PopCap Hints At Far Future-Themed DLC For PvZ: Garden Warfare, More Hints of a PlayStation Release

As the month of May dwindles down, it’s looking more and more likely that we won’t see any type of update for Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare this month.

But keeping our hopes up, developer PopCap HD appears to be hinting at what we can soon expect with regards to DLC as well as with the game’s launch on additional platforms.

First up, the studio recently tweeted this image with the caption, “where we’re going, we’ll still need cones… “

Boskto_CEAAjrtX

If you’ve played Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time, you should recognize this version of the Conehead Zombie from the game’s Far Future update, which suggests Garden Warfare’s next possible will take after the PvZ 2’s Far Future theme.

Furthermore, PopCap is also dropping more hints that a PlayStation release for Garden Warfare is indeed a possibility. Check out this image.

BouhAWIIUAAvEXD

Title of this teaser image may appear familiar to those who remember the Fat Princess PSN game, which was exclusive to the PlayStation 3.

Also, here’s a Ratchet and Clank reference, also a PlayStation-exclusive title.

Bovpx48IEAAho-H

Following yesterday’s Sly Cooper reference, which the PlayStation European twitter account was recently seen retweeting, it further suggests that Garden Warfare is indeed coming to PlayStation some time in the near future.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is also expected to launch for the PC late June and will include a dynamic control scheme that you can check out here.

Video Leak “Not How We Wanted to Unveil Hardline,” Says Visceral, Announcements Possible Before June 9

“If you want it,” says Visceral general manager Steve Papoutsis, fans may hear a little more about the studio’s upcoming shooter, Battlefield Hardline, before its official E3 2014 unveiling.

Taking to Twitter to express his slight frustration with how things have gone down in the past couple of days, Papoutsis says recent leaks are water under the bridge and that he is more than happy to talk about the studio’s take on the iconic Battlefield franchise.

“So yeah, that happened,” he says, likely referring to yesterday’s Battlelog leak and today’s video leak. “Not how we wanted to unveil Hardline, but all good. Didn’t want to wait til E3 anyway, so let’s talk about it…”

If you managed to catch the leaked 7-minute video overview of Hardline’s multiplayer and single player, know that it was a 6-month old build, according to Papoutsis. He says we’ll be able to catch the “real deal” at E3 this year.

“Video that’s out there was for an internal meeting,” he explained. “It’s 6 months old now and team has been cranking since then. See the real deal at E3.

“We’re pouring everything we’ve got into this & stoked to share details on June 9 – maybe even a little more before then if you want it.”

If you ask us, we’re pretty sure Battlefield fans want it.

It’s not all water under the bridge for everyone, however, as we’ve recently learned that at least one EA QA tester has been fired for leaking information stating that Battlefield developer DICE is handling the multiplayer portion of Hardline.

While we’re not certain how much truth there is to that statement, Papoutsis did mention in his letter yesterday that the studio is excited to bring their strengths “to single player,” specifically.

If DICE is overseeing Hardline’s multiplayer, it’s likely studio members from DICE LA or even Visceral are involved as well, considering DICE Stockholm’s rather full plate at the moment with Star Wars: Battlefront and Mirror’s Edge 2.
