Battlefield 4 R20 Server Update Reportedly Breaks Spawns, R21 Rumored To Be Incoming Tomorrow

A recent update applied to Battlefield 4 servers on the PC is reportedly causing headaches for a number of players unable to spawn in after death.

Earlier this morning, server update R20 was applied to the PC version of Battlefield 4, according to a representative from the DICE team. Though the change notes have yet to be published, players are already reporting a severe bug that isn’t allowing those affected to respawn after dying.

On Reddit, a server administrator who goes by the name “Epileino” listed a few of the bugs introduced via the latest update:

  • “Players unable to spawn after they died.”
  • “Not showing scores on kills & capping flags.”
  • “Player crash to desktop when this happens.”

“Rumour has it that R21 might come out tomorrow,” he added, which we suspect would likely resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, according to an official warning currently visible on the Battlelog, users affected by the bug are urged to update their Punkbuster files. Additional reports indicate that this method has worked for a number of users.

Keep your sight on MP1st for more updates as they come.

Update

The official R20 Server Update change notes have been detailed:

  • Fixed an issue where players could equip the exclusive DICE camo/paint, which would cause them to become invisible

Evolve Hunters – Meet The Trapper and Support Classes

In continuing coverage of Turtle Rock’s next-gen first-person shooter Evolve, we learn about two new Hunter classes; the Trapper and Support.

Earlier this week, we met Markov, a member of the Assault class. Today, courtesy of GameInformer, we meet Griffin, a member of the Trapper class, and Hank, a member of the Support class.

As we learned in our previous report, each class type in Evolve is made up of a number of different characters, each with their own unique abilities, along with one ability that is shared amongst all members of that class.

The Trapper

As a Trapper, Griffin’s job is to detect and contain monsters.

To help him achieve this, he carries a special Harpoon Gun that will tether creatures to Griffin, preventing them from escaping. As a monster, attacking Griffin will allow you to break free, but at the cost of diverting your attention away from other Hunters.

Griffin also can aid in reconnaissance tactics by placing Sound Spikes at chosen locations to help ping monsters within range. He also has access to a handy submachine gun for offensive measures whenever he isn’t on trapping duties.

Shared between all Trappers is the Mobile Arena ability which creates a large dome-shaped energy field that keeps friends and foes from entering or leaving the area. This ability, along with their responsibility to trap and control monsters, makes the Trapper class a key player in Evolve’s 4 vs. 1 gameplay.

The Support

Meet Hank. His job is to ensure fellow Hunters keep kicking ass.

With his Shield Gun, Hank can temporarily grant teammates invulnerability which can be especially helpful when used in conjunction with the Medic’s healing abilities.

For offensive measures, Hank can bust out his assault rifles to deal some damage, but he also has access to a nifty laser cutter that can not only deal extra damage, but also be used to literally point to enemy locations at the same time. He can also call in a devastating area-of-effect attack called the Orbital Barrage – a fantastic ability used alongside the Trapper’s Harpoon Gun.

As with all members of the Support class, Hank has the ability to cloak himself for short periods of time, which is great for setting up surprise attacks or while reviving allies.

Rockstar Addresses Cheaters In GTA Online, Maintenance Removes Counterfeit GTA$

In a long and ongoing effort to make sure every player in GTA Online rests on an even playing field, developer Rockstar is taking action against offenders participating in game-breaking cheating or exploiting.

Earlier this week, a GTA Online update was launched in order to improve anti-cheat measures and to cut down on GTA$ and RP exploits. Earlier this morning, Rockstar also finished work on maintenance that the studio says was necessary to remove counterfeit GTA$ from players’ online bank accounts.

Today, a recent statement released by the studio reads the following:

“In recent weeks, a small number of Grand Theft Auto Online players sought to exploit the game by generating and distributing game-breaking amounts of in-game cash, disrupting the experience for other players.

We will continue to issue title updates on an ongoing basis to counter the negative impact this has had on gameplay, and as part of today’s maintenance period, we are removing the counterfeit GTA$ from the game’s economy. Anyone who innocently received GTA$ as a result of these exploits but did not engage in cheating to acquire it will not face any further action – the funds will just be removed, and you’ll be able to keep any items you currently own.

Those who actively engaged in cheating and exploiting the game in this manner will, however, be subject to in-game penalties at our discretion. This may include being placed in isolated cheater pools or banned from GTA Online altogether.

Should you ever encounter someone in GTA Online that appears to be taking advantage of exploits in your session, we ask that you alert us directly via the in-game reporting functionality. In the Pause menu, under the Online tab, select Players and scroll to the offending player. From there, select Report and choose Exploits from the violation options.”

Did Rockstar remove any counterfeit money from your bank account?

Titanfall Alpha Sign-Ups Now Underway [Updated]

Update 2

Another update on Respawn’s Twitter indicates that all invitations to the “limited technical test” have been sent out. You may want to check your inboxes.

Update 1

According to Respawn Entertainment’s Twitter, the invites are, in fact, for “a limited technical test”. The announcement continued, “It is not a beta, and we don’t have any beta news at the moment.” The studio also mentioned the test was for North American residents only.

It’s also worth mentioning that the contents of the test are not to be shared outside of the official forums dedicated to that specific test. Recording guidelines regarding the Xbox One’s built-in game DVR have yet to be publicly specified.

Thanks, VG247.

Original Story

Be the first to get your hands on Respawn Entertainment’s acclaimed shooter, Titanfall, before it’s released to the public this March by signing up for its Alpha.

All you have to do is visit the official Titanfall website and follow the simple instructions on-screen and you will be eligible to partake in the Alpha testing for Titanfall.

However, it should be noted that only people who own the Xbox One are able to participate. Furthermore, if you happened to be one of the lucky few to get in the alpha, you will receive your code this Friday.

For those on the fence thinking it’s a scam, a NeoGAF user confirmed that this alpha is indeed real as they posted their conversation with an EA rep.

Titanfall is set to release on March 11 for the PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One platforms.

GTA Online Down For Maintenance Later Today

If you’re hoping to unwind after a long day with some fun sessions of GTA Online later tonight, you will be in for a bit of disappointment.

Rockstar has just announced that, tonight, GTA Online will be down for maintenance beginning tonight at 6PM PST / 9PM EST and will hopefully be back up within a 24 hour period.

Nothing else was mentioned in the post, but hopefully this interruption of service will address some issues such as removing money gained via modders and other unwanted hacks that give players an unfair advantage.

Recently, Rockstar released a new patch that improves GTA Online’s anti-cheat measures and fixes several GTA$ and RP exploits.

Ex-Capcom Dev Reveals Vega Was Top-Tier Before Final Build of Street Fighter IV

It should come at no surprise that Vega, or commonly known as “Claw” to Street Fighter aficionados, that his place in the Street Fighter IV series is widely considered to be low-tier amongst the numerous fighting gaming communities.

However, there was a time before the release of the vanilla version of Street Fighter IV that he was, in fact, considered among the top-tier in the game, according to ex- Capcom community manager, Seth Killian.

He goes on to say that Vega was in fact the number one character in the game before the official release of Street Fighter IV back in 2008. Although Killian doesn’t go into detail on what made Vega a top character, he does reveal that a few frames on any character is the difference between being considered either low- or high-tier.

This reveal comes shortly after Pie Zeus, primarily a Vega player, winning the first major tournament of 2014 Defend The North, which took place this past weekend.

Any Vega players out there disappointed in the last-minute changes made on the character?

Why Free-to-Play is a Toxic Strategy

Almost every Free-to-Play game I’ve ever picked up has managed to disappoint me.  Whether it’s League of Legends, No Room Left In Hell, Firefall, or Blacklight: Retribution, I’ve always come out of my experience with F2P games feeling like so much more could have been done if they instead launched with a tried and true price tag.

The underlying thing that all F2P games have in common is the need to profit without a price tag , and that leads to a whole new world of problems for game designers.

Probably my worst experience with a F2P game was with No Room Left In Hell.  While I’m sure some people manage to enjoy this game, it’s obvious that a lack of funding has severely limited its potential and made it a buggy, half-baked game that I couldn’t have uninstalled fast enough after playing a few matches.  Conversely, Path of Exile is a fantastic game that, despite being F2P, managed to greatly impress me for the few hours that I sunk into it.  But it always felt like if the developers of PoE had some more money to utilize, it could have been much better.   Likewise, a game that obviously has a lot of potential, but will also likely fall victim to a lack of funding, is Firefall.  Everything about my time with Firefall was enjoyable until, 10 hours in, I ran out of new quests to do and the game effectively “ended” for me.  A game as good looking, well made, and fun to play as Firefall is easily worth $45 to me and it’s a shame that the developers are stuck with the F2P model they started developing the game with, as it’s likely they might never finish it because they haven’t found a way to make back the cost of development with it yet.

With Blacklight: Retribtuion, it’s clear that spending money is really the only way to get the weapons you need to win gunfights.  While $20 bucks, some googling, and a bit of playtime is all it probably takes to get a solid class together in BL:R, not doing so is akin to playing Call of Duty or Battlefield 4 with the worst weapons in the game and with a character that has less health than everyone else.  This is what’s referred to as “Pay-to-Win.”  BL:R represents the worst kind of F2P game, and it’s truly a shame because it’s a fantastic game that’s ruined by rental weapons and paid unlocks that are vastly superior to anything someone who hasn’t dumped hours and hours or cash into the game has access to.

League of Legends sits on the other side of the spectrum.  While there’s nothing inherently P2W about it, it’s designed to get players hooked on the game’s ecosystem and content specifically to get them to invest hundreds of hours and money into it.  What makes LoL so popular is that its skill ceiling is incredibly high and changes with every major patch.  To be a valuable player in LoL requires several if not hundreds of hours to rank up and unlock runes and mastery points that augment your base attributes to the extent of tipping the beginning of each round slightly in your favor.  Ask any player who’s hit level 30 in LoL and they’ll tell you that the game is brutally frustrating until you hit level 20, have unlocked a handful of runes, and built up your mastery trees.  By then, you’ll have most likely bought new skins for the champions you like as well as new champions to play with simply because staring at the same content for hundreds of hours gets boring quick.

This is why there aren’t many game modes or levels in LoL: to keep you craving different aesthetics.  The end result is a game that’s incredibly difficult to get into and learn which results in the general player base constantly getting recycled and inundated with unskilled players.  This is, partly anyway, why most gamers and even LoL players think it’s community is so unnervingly toxic to itself.  New players are a constant source of frustration because each player’s performance matters greatly in every match, which encourages more skilled players to ostracize any unskilled players they might come across.

While it’s undeniable that LoL is a massively popular game, it has a toxic community and a severe lack of diversity in gamemodes and aesthetic options outside of paid content or content that takes a massive amount of playtime. Similarly, games like BL:R essentially make getting that mountain of playtime more frustrating than fun unless you augment it with paid content.   For as good and challenging a game as LoL is, it could be so much better and offer so much more to learn if it wasn’t so held back by the developers trying to bore you into buying new things to look at.  Questioning whether or not P2W is good for gaming isn’t even possible, it’s painfully obvious that it’s bad in the long run.

Overall it’s clear that the F2P business model has yet to be married perfectly with player-first game design.  Whether it’s a lack of features, content being withheld, or an experience purposely designed to put new players chances at doing well behind a paywall, the F2P model has yet to be implemented in a way that allows for enjoyable casual play without opening your wallet first.

So, to F2P game designers, I ask you: what’s the point in a F2P game if it’s designed to make you feel obligated to pay for it not because it’s fun or well made, but because you have to if you want to have any chance of appreciating or enjoying it?

Killzone Shadow Fall’s First Free DLC Maps Revealed

Guerrilla Games is making good on its promise that it made back in September that all future multiplayer maps would be free of purchase to prevent a fractured playing base.

Although details are quite thin and sparse, we do get a sneak peek into where the level designers are heading.

Derived straight from key missions within the single player campaign, both The Hangar and The Cruiser aim to bolster the map list available in Shadow Fall. Both maps will be fully compatible with Shadow Fall’s Custom Warzone feature.

2014-01-15_02

“First up is The Cruiser, a close-to-mid-range combat map set in the confines of a decommissioned ISA cruiser. Consisting of tight, claustrophobic corridors and interconnected compartments, the key to dominating this map is identifying and controlling its choke points.”

2014-01-15_03

“Next is The Hangar, a wide-open map situated in the hangar bay of one of Helghan’s humongous mining spires. In addition to the main area, which offers long lines of sight suitable for sniping, the map contains alternative routes that will need to be secured for full control.”

Guerrilla Games also hints that its first Multiplayer DLC Expansion will be made available soon after, free for Season Pass holders or at an extra cost for those without it. Details about this multiplayer expansion remain bleak, but keep your sights locked on to MP1st for details once they become available.

Dark Souls II Curse Trailer

If you weren’t hyped up for the next iteration in the Dark Souls series, then hopefully this brand-new trailer changes that.

Showing off the very essence that makes these games so great, this new Dark Souls II trailer reveals new bosses and locations that players will get to explore either solo, or with up to three other players online. Additionally the game will also feature player to player battle through an “invasion” system that allows a player to invade the world of others as a red phantom (shown in the trailer).

The highly anticipated action-RPG arrives this March for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Battlefield 4 Xbox One and Xbox 360 Game Updates Now Live, Patch Notes

In an ongoing effort to get Battlefield 4 up and working more-or-less flawlessly, Developers DICE have released a new patch for the Xbox One version of the game, the first since the holidays.

The update, similar to what that the PC and PlayStation platforms received earlier this week, will improve the overall stability of the game, as well as address some bugs and balancing tweaks.

You can view the full patch notes below:

  • Fixed a bug where the M1 Abrams Coaxial HMG ammo box was occasionally blocking the driver’s camera
  • Increased damage by 25% for the Stealth Jet 20mm cannons

  • Fixed an occasional bug where players could experience intermittent engine sound dropouts when driving wheeled IFVs

Unfortunately for those who are playing on the Xbox 360, there’s still no word on when that player base should expect this patch to be available. Stay tuned for updates! [See update above.]

Top 5 Myths of PC Gaming Debunked

PC gaming can be a scary thing for some.

Whether it’s finding parts and building your own rig or diving into entirely new social experiences, things may seem a little intimidating …at first.  But I’m here to tell you that it isn’t all that bad, especially considering the sort of technology that’s available today and the amount of money you could be saving.

If you’re thinking about making the switch from whatever your current gaming set up may be, let me ease the concerns holding you back by debunking these five popular myths about PC gaming.

1. PC gaming is more expensive

While it’s true that you can easily spend $1,200 on a gaming PC, you don’t have to and there is a world of options available at a wide variety of price points.  Even though the sweet spot for performance is around $600-800 for a gaming PC, the long term savings in avoiding subscription services like XBL or PSN, combined with lower prices for most games can add up to a few hundred dollars saved over buying a console.

Here’s a buyer’s guide I did for PC games (and games in general) that breaks down just how easy it is to save tons of money on basically any game:

2. It’s hard to build you own PC

With most DIY stuff, Google is your friend and PC building is no exception.  There is an unending wealth of resources available online at all hardware levels for anyone who needs help building their PC.  More importantly though, hardware manufactures are making PC parts more user friendly than ever and the result is that building your own PC takes just a couple of hours from unboxing to first boot.

3. Troubleshooting ruins the experience

For a lot of people, software bugs, crashing, and hardware failures seem to be the first thing that comes to mind with PCs.  It’s true that PCs have more issues than your average console but Windows 8 is incredibly stable these days and most software or hardware issues can be fixed, just like on consoles, with a simple restart.   The average PC user will most likely never have any issues with their machine and if they do, there’s almost always an automated and user-friendly solution.  For instance, GPU driver updates use to require going to the manufacturer’s website, finding the most recent driver for your hardware, downloading it, and installing it.  Now, between Steam’s driver checker, and AMD/Nvidia both offering software that automatically optimizes and updates your games and drivers, it’s as simple as clicking okay when new drivers are available.

4. There’s no all-in-one or pre-built option that’s affordable AND good

Valve has totally upended this issue with their Steam Machine standard.  At this past CES alone, Valve announced 13 Steam Machines, all at varying price points and all very good gaming PCs.

Each one of these represents a different take on the right solution for their customers in the living room – Gabe Newell CES 2014

The point of the Steam Machines isn’t to make expensive pre-made PCs, it’s to offer consumers a wide variety of hardware options at a wide variety of price points.

5. PC gaming isn’t casual or social

People don’t envision plugging their PCs into their living room TV and using a wireless Xbox or PlayStation controller to play Skyrim or Assassin’s Creed or watch movies on Netflix like they do with a console.  Thanks to software like XBMC, Steam’s Big Picture, most modern games shipping with controller support, and an HDMI port being on just about every motherboard released in the last 4 years, living room gaming with a PC can be just as casual and infinitely more flexible than with a console.  In the year that I’ve been playing PC games exclusively, I’ve meet dozens of people that I play with regularly just like I did back when I had an Xbox 360 and we typically spend most evenings laughing hysterically at videos we find in between matches over Skype.

There are also massive communities for gaming, PC or otherwise, that are getting bigger every year.  Just this month, Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) raised over a million dollars for the Prevent Cancer Foundation by streaming themselves speed-running games.  With a peak concurrent viewership of over 90,000 viewers, I’d say gaming in general is getting more social all the time.

In the end, PC gaming has become something that anyone can do on essentially whatever budget they might have.  While it’s true that setup and software might be a bit of hassle, once you get those things dealt with, everything falls into place and works as intended.

Now is a better time than ever to get into PC gaming, especially if you’re creeped out by consoles with cameras and tired of paying subscription fees.

Battlefield 4 – Hainan Resort Exploding Ship Easter Egg Discovered

Though the hunt for Battlefield 4’s elusive Megalodon may have withered to a close, the Battlefield community isn’t left entirely empty-handed.

Earlier, additional clues led ambitious easter egg hunters to discover a special T-rex surprise on Rogue Transmission in the form of an audio easter egg that can be heard by anyone on the server once it is activated. It was a tricky one to dig up, but the results are worth the effort, especially if you’re a fan of Jurassic Park.

Today, in the pursuit for more, the Battlefield 4 community delivers on yet another amazing find. YouTube personality Jack Frags showcases a rather explosive easter egg on the map Hainan Resort, originally hinted at by Battlefield 4 developer Aleksander Grøndal.

Check it out in the video above. Special credit goes to “SZU1985” for figuring this one out!
