DICE Promises “12-18 Months of Value for Battlefield 3” and Details Upcoming DLC, Close Quarters and Armored Kill

Close Quarters Lead Designer Niklas Fegraeus and Battlefield 3 Executive Producer/Temporary DICE CEO Patrick Bach talk Battlefield 3 DLC, Close Quarters and Armored Kill, and lay out DICE’s future plan for Battlefield 3.

Speaking to VG247, Niklas Fegraeus describes Close Quarters as an “indoor Battlefield.” To check out some gameplay footage for yourself, make sure to take a peek at the second Close Quarters gameplay trailer. As many already know, Close Quarters will introduce 10 new weapons that can be unlocked by completing assignments and which can also be brought back to Back to Karkand and the original Battlefield 3. “When we did the research for what guns to include and so on, we have looked at what kind of weapons and weaponry is most suitable for a close combat, indoor environment. You don’t want big guns that get snagged on thing. There’s a compact feel to a lot of it,” explains Fegraeus. Speaking of weapons, make sure to check out the complete list of weapons included in Close Quarters.

So far, only two maps have been revealed: Ziba Tower and Donya Fortress. Fegraeus describes Ziba Tower as a “luxurious skybar located in central Tehran.” As for Donya fortress, Fegraeus explains that “it’s a bit bigger than the Ziba Tower and it has lots of verticality in it where you can go into the cellar and you can be out in the big water garden. It has some really nice locations.” Both Fegraeus and Bach stressed the importance of vertical gameplay with multiple levels in this particular DLC.

Bach went on to describe the newly introduced game mode, Conquest Domination, as “a twist on the classic Conquest mode where you have only three flags. You can’t spawn on the actual flags so it’s a very high-paced version of Conquest that fits these types of environments really, really well.” Bach also promises that “there’s room for all the classes in these type of maps.”

Speaking of the thirdm upcoming expansion pack, Armored Kill, Bach describes it as being on the opposite end of the spectrum. On top strategic gameplay, it also promises to include “big, open landscapes, new vehicles – a lot of vehicles – and focusing on the width and the scale of Battlefield.” It goes without saying that Bach couldn’t go into details regarding exactly what vehicles we will be seeing in Armored Kill, but he did promise a nice “spread in the vehicles,” when referring to selection.

Bach wrapped things up with a summary of DICE’s current plans for Battlefield 3: “So the expansion pack called Close Quarters is due to be released in June, and then in fall we’re releaseing the next one, Armored Kill, and then Winter is the only thing I can tell about End Game.” Battlefield 3 fans can expect a long shelf life as Bach explained at last week’s EA European Showcase, “we at DICE, we only focus on Battlefield. We make sure that if you’re a Battlefield player, there should be plenty of Battlefield for you to spend your days on. And again, we are focusing on giving you 12-18 months of value for Battlefield 3 and the expansion packs we’re releasing.”

When asked if End Game would mean the end Battlefield 3, Bach answered with a grin, “I will not answer that question.”

Which Battlefield 3 expansion pack are you most looking forward to?

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Beta Update For April 27th – Rifleman, Weapon, and XP Adjustments

Ubisoft’s continued support of the Ghost Recon Future Soldier beta has been impressive. On top of the recent updates that went live a couple days earlier, the team is improving the beta yet again today.

If you are beta testing the game then be sure to leave your feedback about your game experience on their official forums. This will only benefit the game even further when they work out the kinks come launch time. Be sure to check out our first impressions of the beta as well.

Improvements that Ubisoft has deployed on the Xbox 360 as of 2pm EST today, soon to follow on the PS3, as listed on the official website:

Riflemen are over-powered:

  • Increased minimum recoil for the ACR and AK200 to align them more closely with the other assault rifles.
  • Reduced maximum assault rifle damage range, making the sniper rifle more valuable.
  • Increased minimum damage of SMGS, making them more effective against all classes at further ranges.
  • Dramatically reduced the radius of the heartbeat sensor.

Additional Weapon changes:

  • Reduced the dispersion to make handguns generally more effective, especially for the bomb carrier.
  • Adjusted shotgun effectiveness.

XP adjustments:

  • Adjusted XP values for Confidence & Hack Objective.

Additional Equipment changes:

  • Adjusted Flash Bang Duration.
  • Adjusted Flash Bulb reload time.
  • Adjusted EMP air burst radius for EMPs launched by a underbarrel or standalone grenade launcher.
  • Adjusted the amount of UAV’s in match.
  • Increased the duration of the Sensor to make them more susceptible to countering.

Note: Some of you may have noticed the periodical server reboot announcements; these reboots are a part of the Beta optimization process. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and are doing everything possible to minimize impact on your play time. These changes will apply to Playstation 3 owners soon.

Battlefield 3 Developer Details All Weapon Attachments Post-Patch

Senior Gameplay Designer at DICE, Alan Kertz, explains in detail the pros and cons of all Battlefield 3 weapon attachments post-patch.

If you’re serious about your gun skills, then you’ll definitely want to check this one out. Many Battlefield vets will have noticed a rather significant change in weapon attachment balance since the latest patch. According to Kertz, this was completely intentional and for good reason. Pre-patch, many players would gravitate towards the combination of a Forgrip and Suppressor for this set-up seemed to produce the best overall results. So, why would others want to try out different attachments? This was the question Kertz was faced with as he expresses in the latest issue of Inside DICE. He explains, “when we see many players gravitating towards a single setup, as game designers we can conclude that the other choices are not interesting enough to give players reason to try them out. We want players to experience the width of the game, and for this reason we concluded it was time to make a change.”

Below, Kertz has listed various combinations of weapon attachments while explaining the strengths and weaknesses of each after the patch. Each one is categorized into a different play style for easy reference. Which one do you prefer? Let us know in the comments below!

Missed all the weapons that will be included in DICE’s upcoming Battlefield 3 DLC, Close Quarters? Check out the full list here!

Jack of All Trades
Primary accessory: Foregrip
Secondary accessory: Flash Suppressor

Kertz’ Comments: To be blunt, previously the Flash Suppressor was worthless. Post update it has received a huge buff: It now substantially reduces the muzzle climb of a weapon, making it much more controllable. Pairing the Foregrip and the Flash Suppressor together will give your weapon a huge boost in controllability, and this will especially help with high rate of fire weapons like the F2000, AEK-971, A-91 and FAMAS.

Short Range Stealth
Primary accessory: Foregrip
Secondary accessory: Suppressor

Kertz’ Comments: The Foregrip’s muzzle drift reduction works well at short range and pairs well with the Suppressor’s minor muzzle climb reduction. You’ll be invisible on the minimap, you’ll have a significantly reduced muzzle signature, and your weapon will be more controllable. Finally by pairing the Suppressor and the Foregrip together the Suppressor’s minor accuracy bonus fully offsets the accuracy penalty of the Foregrip — your gun will be just as accurate as if you had no accessories at all.

Hip Fire Run and Gun
Primary accessory: Foregrip
Secondary accessory: Laser Sight

Kertz’ Comments: The Laser Sight gives a massive bonus to accuracy from the hip and will allow you to be much more accurate while mobile. Since most of your fire will be from the hip, adding a Foregrip will reduce muzzle drift and make your fire more controllable without feeling any of the downsides of the Foregrip. You can also toggle your laser sight on and off to afford a bit more stealth if the situation requires. Remember, the laser sight only helps from the hip, so turn it off when you’re aiming down the sights to increase your stealth!

Medium Range Marksman
Primary accessory: Foregrip
Secondary accessory: Heavy Barrel

Kertz’ Comments: This has been a clear source of confusion in the community. Should I pair a Foregrip with my Heavy Barrel after the update? My answer is a definite yes. Although the Foregrip decreases Aimed Accuracy, the Heavy Barrel’s Aimed Accuracy bonus has been increased to offset the Foregrip’s penalty. Pairing the two will still give you much greater Aimed Accuracy than a stock weapon, as well as reducing your muzzle drift. You will see some increased muzzle climb, however you’ll also be getting increased range out of the Heavy Barrel so your hits will have more impact at Medium Range.

Long Range Marksman
Primary accessory: Bipod
Secondary accessory: Heavy Barrel

Kertz’ Comments: If you want to get the absolute best accuracy out of your weapon, this is the setup for you. The bipod has absolutely no downsides when undeployed, and when deployed it gives a huge boost to accuracy both aimed and from the hip as well as substantially reducing muzzle climb and drift. You’ll also get the increased range of the heavy barrel making you a threat to even snipers when using your deployed bipod and a high zoom optic.

These are my recommendations. There are several combinations that haven’t been covered here, so experiment to find your best post update accessory combo. There’s at least one combo that’s perfect for your unique play style, so try a few and you’ll likely find not just a new accessory combo, but a whole new play style. You can find a handy guide below so you always know what to expect when experimenting with the different accessories discussed above.

Alan Kertz
Core Gameplay Designer

APPENDIX: KNOW YOUR BATTLEFIELD 3 ACCESSORIES
ACCESSORY PROS CONS
Suppressor Reduces muzzle climb, increases aimed accuracy, hides muzzle flash Reduces range, reduces hip accuracy
Laser Sight Increases hip accuracy, can blind enemies Visible to enemies
Bipod Greatly increases accuracy, greatly reduces muzzle climb and sway Must be stationary with bipod deployed
Flash Suppressor Greatly reduces muzzle climb, reduces muzzle flash Slightly reduces hip accuracy
Foregrip Greatly reduces muzzle drift Slightly reduces aimed accuracy
Heavy Barrel Greatly increases aimed accuracy Increases muzzle climb, reduces hip accuracy

Hybrid Beta Details Emerge

The much anticipated Hybrid beta launch is today and 5th Cell has informed everybody about the beta details that seemed to be under wraps until now. The retail release will see a date sometime in summer 2012. No official date has been determined. If you missed it, we are giving away three beta keys ourselves to some lucky winners.

  • The beta will begin Thursday, April 27th at 11:00 AM PDT.
  • There will be 3 maps and 3 modes in the beta. In the retail version, there are 10 maps and 7 modes.
  • The level cap is 50, but surpassing level 25 is “highly unlikely” within the beta.
  • There are a lot of weapons to unlock, but it’s possible to see them all if you play enough.
  • The territory metagame pitting Paladin versus Variant will be live in the game. Players will be forced to pick a faction and will not be able to change in beta. Players of opposite factions cannot be played with on the same team, even if they’re on your friends list. In the full version there are ways to change your faction, so we’re told.
  • Nothing will be added to the beta after it goes live. It will be two and a half weeks long.
  • Players are heavily encouraged to report bugs and impressions to the official Hybrid Forums.

Also, the beta is US-only, unfortunately. By changing your account’s region to USA you should be able to circumvent this, however. With the beta running two and a half weeks, that puts the end date somewhere in the middle of May. Don’t forget to check out the brand new beta trailer for Hybrid and be sure to leave a comment in the section below with your opinions on this next XBLA giant.

[Updated] Two New Black Ops 2 Intel Drops Released

Another day, another intel drop for Black Ops 2. Activision and Treyarch have updated the Call of Duty website with a new gif, which reads “the enemy could be anywhere and it could be anyone.”

You can see the static image below, and click on it to see the gif.

Two notable clues from the image/gif:

  • The gif ends at 4:13
  • One MP1st reader noted that the letters “w, z, q, o, and h” show up for a split second as the sentence is displayed.

Update #1: Yesterday’s code, which can find here, has been changed to the following (click on it to see all the coordinates).

Update #2: According to the CoDZombies forums, via NGT, the new coordinates point to the LA Convention Center, where E3 is held. It’s also worth noting that E3, June 5-7, will take place a day after a partial lunar eclipse on June 4th. Interestingly, the LA Convention Center happens to be right next to the Staples Center, which hosts the NBA playoff match on May 1st, the world reveal night of Black Ops 2.

BioWare Launches Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Manifest

BioWare is taking Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer to the next level with their brand new ME3 Multiplayer Manifest.

With game enhancing services like Call of Duty’s Elite, Battlefield 3’s Battlelog, and Ghost Recon Future Soldier’s Ghost Recon Network slapped on to many of today’s top AAA shooters, it’s easy for other titles to get lost in the crowd without their own way to keep players hooked 24/7 across multiple devices to their own multiplayer experience. BioWare seems to be taking this lesson to heart.

Starting now, ME3 players can log into the BioWare Social Network using their EA Origin account to view their own ME3 Multiplayer Manifest. This Manifest lets players inspect multiplayer avatars without having to boot up the game itself. Additionally, “players will be able to view which characters, weapons, mods and consumables they’ve unlocked in MP, and what’s more, you’re able to compare your stats with your friends,” according to the BioWare Blog.

So far, things look like they’re off to a great start. However, BioWare has stated that “new features for the manifest are in the works and will be added soon.” So, make sure to keep checking back to see what updates BioWare has in store for ME3 multiplayer fans.

Give it a spin and leave your thoughts in the comments below! Also, don’t forget about this weekend’s community challenge, Operation: Exorcist.

[Updated] Battlefield 3: Close Quarters Weapon List – Three New Weapons Revealed and a Modified .44 Magnum?

Update: DICE Senior Designer has confirmed via Twitter that the weapons listed below will, indeed, be included in the Battlefield 3: Close Quarters DLC. Regarding the modified .44 Magnum, Halling clarified, “it’s a result of a dev-setting on the server they played on when recording. Not an unlock in retail.”

Original Story: With the latest Battlefield 3: Close Quarters “Donya Fortress” gameplay trailer having been released, we’re finally able to gather all of the weapons that will be included in the DLC dropping this June.

Though similar to our last attempt at unveiling these new weapons, in which we were only able to gather the first seven out of ten, we’ve now discovered three new weapons, as well as what could possibly be a nice little surprise for those who are fond of the .44 Magnum.

Check out the revised weapon list below:

Assault Rifles:

SCAR-L
AUG

Carbines:

ACW-R
MTAR-21

Light Machine Guns:

L86A2
LSAT

Sniper Rifles:

M417 [New]
JNG-90 [New]

All-Class Weapons:

SPAS-12
M5K [New]

Lastly, redditor xNeptune made a nice little discovery in the latest trailer as well. Check out what seems to be a modified .44 Magnum with an attached suppressor and laser sight:

A modded .44 Magnum?

Of course, this could simply be another DICE developer-exclusive weapon just like the M1911 S-TAC in the original game. We’ll just have to wait to find out!

Which one of these Battlefield 3: Close Quarters weapons interest you the most?

Thanks to MP1st reader Alarik95 for pointing out some missing weapons.

Battlefield 3 PS3 Input Lag and VoIP Problems Expected to Be Fixed By June

Battlefield 3 executive producer and current DICE CEO, Patrick Bach, addresses angry PS3 players, who have suffered from VoIP and input lag issues.

“First of all, just because it’s in a forum doesn’t make it our top priority. There are things that we’ve been fixing that have been way, way worse than the things you’ve brought up, and we have to make decisions on fixing the most important things first,” Bach told CVG referring to Battlefield 3’s input lag, voice chat problems on the PlayStation 3.

“Regarding vocal people on the internet, the statistics we get from the game often prove that certain things aren’t true, and it’s really hard to tell sometimes,” he continued.

When Bach was asked if those affected are in the minority, he reponded, “Yes. Not always but in some cases, and I think it’s important for people to understand that it’s not that we aren’t caring, it’s just that we can’t always tell people that they’re wrong, because people have the right to feel whatever they feel, but that doesn’t make it right for everyone.”

Since the game launched in October, the PS3 version received one VoIP patch in February, and input lag was addressed in the 1GB patch in March. While both fixes did improve the experience for PS3 users, there are still some rough edges to sand off. Fortunately, both problems will be further fixed in the near future according to Bach.

Bach explained that input lag “has been a really hard thing for us to fix, but in the Close Quarters expansion pack we’re actually fixing it. I didn’t want to bring it up as a feature, but we are improving it quite significantly, and hopefully players who have felt it before will feel the difference, that it feels much snappier and gives better feedback, so we’re definitely listening.”

PS3 players might not have to wait until Close Quarters drops in June for a voice chat fix, as Bach teased a “perfect solution” in the works to be released soon.

“And on the voice chat functionality, we’ve been working on it and I think we’ll probably have the perfect solution very, very soon. It’s very hard to fix between the combination of the built-in systems and our systems, and it’s not that easy to just make it a priority over everything else because it will affect the rest of the game,” he concluded.

Earlier today, a new gameplay trailer for Close Quarters was released showcasing a new map in the upcoming expansion, which PS3 players will receive one week earlier than other platforms.

“There’s a Lot of People We Pissed Off,” Admits Activision Regarding CoD Elite’s Rough Launch

Call of Duty Elite had a dodgy start back in November, 2011. Throughout the month the service was completely unreliable for Modern Warfare 3 players. The launch troubles didn’t sit well with early adopters, acknowledges Activision.

Speaking to MCV, Activision’s product director, Noah Heller, admitted “we still have to prove ourselves.”

He continued, “there’s a lot of people we pissed off all the way back to November, and we have to show them we are not going to let that happen again. But we have started fulfilling our promises and people are starting to get it is real value for money.”

Since the rough start, the number of promised DLC drops have increased from 20 to 24, the service have been more stable, and clan operations and prize events have kicked in. However, PC players still don’t have the option to use Elite free or paid.

Thanks, VG247

Leaked Black Ops 2 In-Game Screenshots of the Quadrotor, New Intel Drop Unlocks, and More

Black Ops 2 in-game screenshots have been leaked through the special effects firm that worked on the Quadrotor viral video. Also, the latest intel drop has been added to the Call of Duty website, and we got our hands on a better image of the real life Quadrotor with a Tacitus watermark .

The official Call of Duty website has been updated with a clearer image of Tacitus, we will have more on that later, and a new riddle for Call of Duty fans to solve. Thanks AngelySaras for letting us know.

Click on the image below to see the alphanumeric codes change.

The code broken down:

  • 34.D46660-CBE.2BC7C68D1
  • 34.D4416E-A98.2B7886AC1
  • 34.849C64-271.272956371
  • 34.34E76B-AFC.2FD106541
  • 34.84E56C-C4E.2718662D1

Telixion changed the numbers to letters and triangulated the following locations through GPS. Let us know if you came up with anything else in the comments.

Here are the first images of the Quadrotor in-game. It’s unclear what stage of developement Black Ops 2 was in when the images were taken, but it seems it was in the early stages.

Those images were released by the mechanical special effects company, Reel EFX, that worked on FPSRussia’s viral video. The images were taken down minutes before this article was published. (It’s possible that the quadrotor was rendered in MW3’s engine for the special effects firm to model the real life version after it. The project page that was taken down earlier listed the project as “Call of Duty.”)

Black Ops 2 is rumored to be set in the near future, 10 to 15 years from now.

You can watch he following video by our friend MrRoflWaffle to see how the Quadrotor was put together:

Ubisoft Red Storm will be updating the Ghost Recon Future Soldier multiplayer beta with some tweaks, fixes and a brand new game mode, Saboteur.

Currently Grenades and Party changes will only be active on Xbox 360we are working to bring these changes to the PS3 Beta as well.

Additionally, the game mode, Saboteur, is being released a day earlier than stated in the GRFS multiplayer beta guide, meaning players will be able to try their hand at it today. “In Saboteur use stealth and cunning to capture the explosive briefcase and detonate it on the opposing team’s objective,” as described on the official website. New “Tacitus” Image Surfaces on Call of Duty’s Website

Treyarch and Activision have just released another piece of intel in the form of a distorted image of the word “Tacitus.” Click on the image below for full size.

This is the second time the word “Tacitus” has been associated with the next Call of Duty, which is believed to be called “Black Ops 2,” as several clues suggest. FPSRussia wore a Tacitus shirt in the recent Call of Duty viral video. Also, Tacitus and Eclipse seem to be linked somehow.

Thanks AngleySaras for the tip!
