DICE Working on “Permanent Solution” For Battlefield 3 Australia Servers

DICE Community Managers have updated Australian Battlefield 3 players on the situation regarding recent servers issues.

For those who may not know, Battlefield 3 servers in Australia have been scarce at best, an issue that seemingly began ever since the latest server maintenance. Many players complain that if they are even able to get into a game, it usually results in 1-bar ping. This thread on the Battlelog currently spans 77 pages of comments from a number of frustrated players.

However, things aren’t all doom-and-gloom for our Australian friends. Community Manager, Ian Tornay has stated that DICE/EA “is working on a permanent solution to server issues that have been affecting online play for Australian 3 Battlefield 3 players.” He adds that “it will take us some time to get these permanent solutions in place. We know that we’ve got to get our loyal Australian players up and running in the interim so we’re also putting a stop-gap solution into place; more servers, backend improvements, and keeping a close eye on the situation.” As for when players might see some improvements, “these short-term changes will be rolling out over the coming weeks and some players may notice improvements sooner than others as we work towards our goal. We will keep you updated on our progress.”

Additionally, Community Manager, Daniel Matros had this to say on the Battlelog: “I want to let you know that our team over here has been working very hard in order to solve these issues for you. We’ve done numerous improvements and of course, one of them being ramping up our server capacity in Australia. These short-term changes will be rolling out over the comings weeks and some players may notice improvements sooner than others as we work towards our goal. We will keep you updated on our progress. Do please remember that you will always have a line in to the Studio via me so if you encounter anything you wish to talk about or report, let me know on Twitter.”

Our best wishes go out to our Australian friends in hopes that these issues will be resolved and that they can properly enjoy Battlefield 3 as it should be. Let us know in the comments below if you’ve been noticing any improvements so far.

Halo 4 Multiplayer Introduces Perks, 343i Assures “Halo’s not Call of Duty”

Earlier today, 343 Industries gave Halo fans and inside look at the upcoming sequel, Halo 4. If you missed it, you can check it out right here. Not only did we get to see how the campaign is shaping up, but we also got our first glimpse at Halo 4’s multiplayer.

With the exception of the fact that maps are being developed with the competitive audience in mind, that the Battlerifle will be making a return and that the multiplayer will be more connected to the lore of Halo, much info has yet to be revealed. Luckily, Eurogamer was able to learn an interesting fact: Halo 4’s multiplayer will introduce a system similar to Call of Duty’s perks and Battlefield’s specializations. It has been revealed that players will be able to fully customize their Spartan IV’s armor, much like previous Halo titles, but which will now directly affect the gameplay.

This is obviously a fairly drastic change to the already well-established Halo-style gameplay. Franchise Director, Frank O’Connor admits, “I expect a variety of different reactions.” However, he made it clear, “we’ve a tremendous amount of respect for Bungie and for the universe that they created, and yet we do want to take our own unique view on Halo and on where we want to take the franchise is in the future. It’s about finding the balance so it’s still Halo yet still feels fresh.”

Apparently, this isn’t the only thing that may trigger some passionate reactions among the community. “What we showed today is in some ways really traditional. Some of the more revolutionary stuff that we’re going to be doing is going to create more fuss, and I think it’s going to be mostly positive fuss, as it’s all been carefully thought out and considered.”

So far, the reactions to this new gameplay mechanic have been accusatory of 343 Industries essentially copying the gameplay of shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield. O’Connor assures, “what we do take very seriously is changing player habits. So rather than chasing Call of Duty or Battlefield and trying to do their thing and doing it poorly and doing injustice to it, we’re trying to do our own thing, and do something fairly original but still something that’s completely compatible with the Halo universe.” He continued, “Halo’s not Call of Duty. Halo’s a sandbox game about really emergent things. A lot of things that worked great about Call of Duty – and don’t get me wrong, I was addicted Black Ops all of last year – they do player rewards really well. We’re not trying to do the same thing, it’s as simple as that. We’re trying to do something else, and to push our game forwards and not theirs.”

What O’Connor seems to be trying to push to fans is that 343 Industries is “not chasing anybody else’s tail – all the pressure comes from inside.”

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. Do you trust 343 Industries to keep the Halo experience unique, or have they succumbed to the pressure of current shooter trends?

Starhawk Beta Patch 1.3 Drops Later This Week, New Map and Other Features Added

Lightbox president, Dylan Jobe discusses the Starhawk Beta’s next big patch.

Lightbox Interactive have finished their final weekend of play tests on patch 1.3 and will be deploying it in the coming days.

However, if you were lucky enough to log in earlier, then you might have already gotten the chance to download patch 1.3 and try out a few of the new features. Unfortunately, those who did insall 1.3 will soon have to re-install 1.2 in ordert to continue to play online, otherwise, according to Dylan “they can just wait a few days” for the patch to deploy.

If you missed out on the recent news, patch 1.3 will feature a brand new map known as Dust, a new vehicle, and a ton of bug fixes. You can see a short preview of patch 1.3 here.

Early in the year it was confirmed that Starhawk would indeed support a colorblind mode later on in the beta. According to Dylan, this feature will be available once patch 1.3 goes live later this week. This may be great news for those who have been requesting the feature as color indicators over specific players are, at times, hard to distinguish from one another.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive No Longer Supports Cross-Platform Play, Releases This Summer

Valve has opted to cancel plans for cross platform online multiplayer for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in order to update the game more frequently.

Speaking to Joystiq, Valve’s Chet Faliszek explained that cross-platform play was removed due to what Valve has learned from the beta . Faliszek stated, “the beta has proved we want to update not just the beta, but the game itself post-launch frequently on the PC, to do that we need to separate the platforms so one doesn’t hamstring the other. So for that, we have removed the idea of cross-platform play – essentially make all platforms stronger by not mixing them.”

Valve has yet to pin down a specific release date, but the company revealed that the downloadable title will release this Summer on PC/Mac, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Read here for a chance to enter the PC beta through a Steam survey.

Halo 4: A First Look Including Multiplayer Footage

343 Industries brings Halo fans all over the world a first look into Master Chief’s brand new adventure in a behind-the-scenes video showing off both the single-player and multiplayer of Halo 4.

343i states that all multiplayer maps would be created from scratch, meaning nothing will be recycled from the single-player campaign. They will be built from the ground up and crafted with competitive players in mind. Also of note is that the fan-favorite Battle Rifle will be making a return.

We’re working within the constraints of what makes Halo Halo, but trying to make every aspect of it bigger and better.

DUST 514 Will Be Free-To-Play on PSN

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, executive producer of Dust 514, Brandon Laurino, confirmed that Dust 514, an MMOFPS, will be available for free.

Like the Killzone 3 multiplayer that recently went free-to-play, PlayStation 3 owners who have access to the PlayStation Network will be able to download the game for free once it launches later this year. Originally, the game had been planned to cost somewhere between $10 to $20, but it has now been decided that the game will go free and feature a store that gamers will be able to purchase various content such as maps, skills, and other in-game items. Cost of these items can range from anywhere in the pennies to high prices, which have not been told yet. Expect tons of content releasing for the game in the near future.

Dust 514 will have 4 maps according to Brandon, but in reality it will feature much more.

“It’s not the classical, ‘We’re going to have four maps at launch…’ We are covering literally a universe of planets, so there’s thousands of different maps and they’re all available to everyone who’s playing.” Brandon told Eurogamer, “There won’t be some section of the universe that’s blocked off. It’s really about what you build on those planets – some of those will be earned, some of those will be paid. Again, none will give an unfair advantage, but may have a unique look, or a certain tweak or side-grade.”

You can read the full story here: Eurogamer

Whether this will hold the same truth for the PSVita version is currently unknown.

MW3 Dev Considers Non-Lethal Deathstreaks For Next CoD

Recently, the Call of Duty community has been rather vocal about their view of the inclusion of Deathstreaks in the Modern Warfare series, originally introduced in Modern Warfare 2.

If you missed it, Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling, recently shared his views about deathstreaks like Final Stand, which got some dialogue (hopefully constructive) happening between fans and himself.

In case you haven’t noticed, much of the community, especially the vocal ones, share a general dislike (dare I say hatred?) of the inclusion of Deathstreaks which Bowling has been taking into consideration lately. Though, he does argue that “stats show people use Deathstreaks (lethal ones) a lot.” Earlier, he mentioned that it’s simply a compromise that MW3 developers had to agree on. Luckily, it seems the developers are open to change. Though Deathstreaks will not be taken out of Modern Warfare 3, or perhaps even in the next instalment of the series, Bowling admits that “they could be rebalanced.” For example, when asked if it’s possible that the blast radius of Dead Man’s Hand be lowered, Bowling answered, “it’s possible, we’re always looking at balancing. No plans announced currently though.”

To be more specific, it seems that it’s the lethal Deathstreaks like Final Stand and Dead Man’s Hand that the community mostly has a grudge against. Bowling would tell you, “I agree, two of my least favorite deathstreaks. They’re here to stay for MW3,” unfortunately. At least non-lethal ones like Copycat and Juiced still give an unlucky/unskilled player a boost in performance without having such a negative effect on other players. To fans who have thought that it would simply be better if all Deathstreaks were non-lethal, Bowling states, “I agree.” He added, “the best thing players can do is stop using them. If we see people prefer non-lethal over lethal = Change.” He went on to mention that, “every game is unique, there’s no reason to think [Deathstreaks] would or would not be in any future iteration. Feedback does help shape that.” It is likely that developers will consider this for their next title in the Call of Duty franchise, which you know there will be.

Here’s to non-lethal Deathstreaks in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4!

Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments below. Would you still be open to Deathstreaks if they became non-lethal?

Call of Duty Titles Have Year-Round Activity, No “Signs of Slowing” – Eric Hirshberg

Activision Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg, discusses the annual release philosophy as opposed to year round activity that the Call of Duty franchise is seeing.

“There’s a unique behavior for gamers related to that game [Call of Duty]… it has this incredibly long tail and people play it all year round and that has forced, or enabled, the company to change the way we look at it because, to our players, it’s not an annual retail release,” Hirshberg stated in a Games Industry interview.

“It’s a year-round activity. So, if you look at it like an annual retail release, by those standards, it’s easy to get nervous.” Then, he went on to liken the Call of Duty franchise to how the NFL operates. He stated, “but if you look at it through a different lens; if you look at it like, the NFL happens every year and people like it every year and they obsess over it every year and they come back for more every year and I think that it’s an entertainment relationship that’s pretty unique in the gaming space.”

On the subject of whether the franchise is inching closer to its peak, which the latest NPD numbers suggested and Hirshberg refuted, he noted, “let me also say that you can’t find a metric that would indicate that it’s fatiguing or that there are signs of slowing.” He continued, “the concurrency of players is higher than ever and not only that, it’s across several games. I think that the top three most played games on Xbox Live are the last three Call of Duty games.” The latest Call of Duty numbers suggested over 40 million active monthly users across all titles.

“It’s just not reflective of what our gamers clearly want. If you start from that place, of looking at what gamers want and what their behavior would suggest – they want more DLC, they want more new gameplay experiences. And so, we’re starting with that and building it out. We’re not starting with the conventional wisdom of the industry and going in,” Hirshberg added regarding how the industry paints annual releases in negative light.

Mass Effect 3’s Multiplayer Was BioWare’s Biggest Challenge, Wanted It In Since Mass Effect 1

“We’ve been trying to figure out how to put multiplayer in Mass Effect since Mass Effect 1″ Said Executive Producer, Casey Hudson in an interview with Gamasutra.

Though this has been a wish among the BioWare team since the inception of the franchise, unfortunately, it just didn’t click with the story and setting of earlier games: “…we couldn’t figure out how [multiplayer] made sense with the story of Mass Effect 1. The same thing applied in Mass Effect 2. You’re basically by yourself even more than Mass Effect 1, and the multiplayer just didn’t really make sense.” Hudson promised that BioWare “wouldn’t do the thing that people are afraid that [they] would do where you’re running around and there are 16 Commander Shepard’s trying to shoot each other for some bizarre reason.” Luckily, “…the story of Mass Effect 3 is so much more out in the open, and generally everyone knows what Shepard is up to, and everyone across the galaxy is fighting the same war that Shepard is.” Hudson went on to explain that though the BioWare Montreal team handled the multiplayer side of development, they were closely integrated with the main BioWare HQ in Edmonton. He assures us that “it integrates with the single player story really nicely.”

Hudson also spoke about some of the greatest challenges BioWare faced during development of Mass Effect 3, one of which happened to be the multiplayer: “This is the first game in the series that we’re doing multiplayer, and multiplayer is therefore a new challenge for us.” He elaborated, “I would say that the biggest challenge has been just making sure that the multiplayer side of the experience is going to really be satisfying for players.” Judging by the reactions from the recent multiplayer demo (which you can read MP1st’s impressions of right here), it’s safe to say BioWare can sleep easy.

Make sure to check out Casey Hudson’s thoughts on Mass Effect 3‘s post-launch support and DLD plans.

Do you think multiplayer will become a valuable edition to the Mass Effect franchise? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

BF3 Dev Details Incoming Tweaks to Spotting, Reveals Least Popular Map, and More

Lead Gameplay Designer, Alan Kertz, details some upcoming changes that will be making its way to Battlefield 3’s spotting system. He also touches on how different PS3 controllers can have an effect on responsiveness.

First, as a quick follow up to yesterday’s article in which Lead Gameplay Designer, Alan Kertz, talks about some of the most popular maps in Battlefield 3, he revealed earlier this morning that Tehran Highway is, indeed, the least popular Battlefield 3 map.

Kertz recently announced on Twitter DICE’s plans to tweak the spotting function in Battlefield 3. It’s a bit of a mixed bag in terms of reception among BF3 players. Some like it, some don’t, some think it just needs to be tweaked differently. He stated, “since I get so many comments on it, spotting through smoke is likely to stay, though not like it is. It’s not a design but a tech limit.” However, he did mention, “one that is likely to be tweaked is the auto 3D spotting, not just in smoke but in general. The distance is longer than intended.” He later corrected, “I should say Nametag display, not Auto 3D spotting. It’s not a real spot unless you hit Q/Back/Select.” So expect the distance at which the enemy’s nametag appears to be slightly shortened.

One PS3 user recently mentioned to Kertz that upon purchasing a new controller, input lag seems to have decreased. Kertz replied, “likely the new controller is more precise. There’s a big diff between the original and Dual Shock 3.” He also revealed, “we actually handle the two differently in code by Sony’s own recommendation. They made a big improvement in the DS3.” Just to clarify, Kertz wants players to know, “I’m not saying it will fix lag, but it will be more responsive.” For some other suggested input lag solutions, make sure to read here.

Let us know in the comments below, what is it about spotting that you think needs to be tweaked if anything at all? Also, have any of you other PS3 users had any luck with “improving” responsiveness or input lag?

Major Battlefield 3 Patch Planned For Spring, Will Include New Features – Possible DLC Announcement at GDC

Karl Magnus Troedsson, General Manager at DICE, talks about the upcoming Battlefield 3 patch and hints at some new features to be revealed shortly.

According to an early, German version of the new series, Inside DICE, the upcoming Battlefield 3 patch (which will be released across all platforms) will include some brand new features on top of the already announced fixes and updates. Details of these special features will be unveiled at the upcoming Game Developers Conference as well as in the next instalment of Inside DICE.

Troedsson promises the next patch to be a major update. Many are still wondering, however, when will Battlefield players finally get to add it to their download queue? Troedsson couldn’t reveal a date but was able to give some reasons for the long wait, the first and most obvious being the content which should include these new, aforementioned features. In fact, he admits that the patch was originally planned for a February release. However, due to the addition of further content, it had to be pushed back. DICE is now planning for a Spring release. Second were issues on the technical side as well as with console manufacture regulations. Troedsson also claims these to be the reasons DICE’s has decided to release larger, spaced-out patches rather than smaller, more frequent patches. He did, however, mention that quick updates are more appropriate for immediate fixes, like the recent PS3 VoIP issues for example.

If announcements during the GDC and in the next Inside DICE instalments are anything like Troedsson make them out to be, fans should find out why 2012 will be a great year for Battlefield. Troedsson stated that he had some great news in store for Battlefield fans and it is quite likely that we will be hearing something of DLC. According to him, February was also supposed to be the month in which DICE made an announcement of their DLC plans. Unfortunately, due to quickly changing circumstances, this became impossible. He also reflected that this, unfortunately, led to many disappointed Battlefield 3 fans when these hinted announcements did not arrive. Troedsson stated with hope that the upcoming GDC should mark the next milestone in terms of new Battlefield 3 information.

Stay tuned to MP1st for more details and updates as we investigate and translate further. Make sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

Let us know in the comments below, what new features do you think might be included in the next patch? Could it have anything to do with the recently talked about spectator mode and private servers? Do you think we’ll be hearing of DLC at the GDC?

Thanks, Blu3BullE for the tip!

[Updated] BF3 Devs Tease a “Rewarding Week” Ahead, Reveal Most Popular Map and Weapon Balance Secrets

Developers over at Digital Illusions CE reveal the most played and most popular map in Battlefield 3, give some insight to weapon and vehicle balance and teases an interesting week for Battlefield 3 fans.

When asked which Battlefield 3 map has been most played so far, Senior Gameplay Designer, Alan Kertz, revealed, “Op Metro.” This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise given the controversy that surrounds this unique map. Unique, because it oddly doesn’t quite seem to fit what Battlefield 3 has become known for, given it’s extreme linearity and numerous choke points. For every player that despises it’s limited space of movement and the utter chaos that it can often encourage, other players will take any chance they can get to roam the underground halls, light machine gun in hand, racking up the kills.

Kertz was also recently asked about weapon balance and how the DICE team went about its construction. Kertz answered surprisingly, “with 1 gun. The game was built around the M16 as a base.” The M16 assault rifle seems to be quite popular among assault class aficionados given the all-round, work horse that it is. Kertz’s statement seems to explain this. “Vehicle balance generally starts with the speed and handling of the vehicle, and then builds in a rock paper scissors way,” he added.

Meanwhile, other members of DICE tease some upcoming surprises for Battlefield 3 fans. Daniel Matros, Global Community Manager, mentioned that there are some “good playtests going on in the Studio today,” while Senior Designer, Tim Kjell has “a ‘slight feeling’ next week will be a very, very… shall we say, rewarding, week?” Could he be referring to the recently announced Inside DICE feature? Or something completely different?

What do you think DICE has in store for Battlefield fans next week? Also, let us know what your favorite Battlefield 3 weapon is and whether you love or hate Operation Metro and why in the comments below!

Update: According to Kertz, map popularity is measured by “rounds completed per player. So 64 ppl would mean 64 points. Next is Caspian, Firestorm and Kharg.”

Twisted Metal Patch No. 3 Brings More Network Fixes, Balancing Patch Next Week, Trophies Bugged

David Jaffe gives a status update on Twisted Metal, discusses balancing and other bugs.

In a recent video update, David Jaffe has said that possibly later today, Sony and Eat,Sleep,Play will be deploying Patch Number 3, which will further address the network issues.

If the patch is not live today, then expect it no later then Monday. It will include:

  • Increase ping latency from 300 to 500 to further address connection issues.
  • Quick Online Action Tab to online game menus allowing quick access to games.
  • U.I. change to inform host that they are host. No Auto Start in this patch (Though it’s coming).
  • Bug fix for Clan chat
  • Fix for where matches kick every player out of a room
  • Fix for ensuring that max ranks unlocks everything automatically.

As the servers come down tomorrow, the XP will be increasing in Nuke mode for certain actions such as launching a missile, hitting the statue, and killing the faction capturing etc.

And finally: The balancing issues that players are reporting. Jaffe stated that, beginning next week, the team will work on balancing out the game. “We’ll be hopefully moving on to balance issues for the next patch.” Jaffe says, “work starting Monday on compiling final list for balance patch.”

Also for those who have complaints over certain trophies not unlocking, according to PS3Trophies, these trophies are glitched due to the slow stats update and that they should appear later on if you continue playing and work towards them until they do. However, players have reported over on Jaffe’s Twitter that after playing well over the number of games for certain trophies, they have still not unlocked. Jaffe commented saying that the team will begin looking into the issues and will give us an update in the future.

Expect next week or so to have an onslaught of new Twisted Metal videos showcasing how to play the game.

Twisted Metal is now available on the Playstation 3. Be sure to check out the latest Twisted Metal news.

What was originally promised to be 20 Elite drops of content over 9 months is now 22. When Call of Duty Elite was officially announced, the team behind Modern Warfare 3 committed to release 20 content drops over the game’s supposed life cycle until the next Call of Duty release, which is rumored to be Black Ops 2.

Last month, Beachhead studios beefed up Call of Duty Elite by adding one more piece of DLC to the initial 20 pieces coming to Modern Warfare 3. Now, thanks to a tipster, we discovered that another piece of content was added to the content calendar. The scheduled DLC content for the month of May for Xbox 360 now features four drops, one map, one mission, and two classified pieces of DLC. PS3 owners can expect these for drops in June, as a PS3 section has also been added to the calendar that outlines the same drops a month ahead. The classified drops used to be labeled “modes.”

The following schedule is for Call of Duty Elite for Xbox 360. (Add one month for PS3 releases)

  • January: Pizza and Liberation
  • February: Overwatch
  • March: Black Box (Map), Black Ice (Mission), and Negotiator (Mission)
  • April: 2 Maps
  • May: 1 Map, 1 Mission, 2 Classified
  • June: 1 Map, 1 Mission, 1 Classified
  • July: 2 Maps
  • August: 1 Map, 1 Mission, 1 Classified
  • September: 1 Map, 1 Mission

Non-Elite Xbox 360 owners can expect the first content collection on March 20th. PS3 owners will receive the collection in April. (Safe to assume that PC will be able to buy the first collection in April also.)

As for the classified drops, new modes might be one of the types of DLC to come. Robert Bowling did comment on the possibility of classic Call of Duty maps to release for Modern Warfare 3, but he believes that these will be free and outside the DLC model. Also, he didn’t rule out gun DLC, which could be among the classified content.

Thanks to Gav for the tip!

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Release Date Leaked

Surprise, surprise. Call of Duty fans will be treated to yet another title this year according to leaked information.

Similar to the leak over at Amazon France a few weeks back, Spanish online retailer, FNAC, seems to have let it slip that “Black Ops 2” is yet again confirmed as the next Call of Duty title to be developed by Treyarch. Unsurprisingly, if this leak is to be true, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will release in November, 2012.

Activision has yet to release a statement regarding this matter.
