Unicorn Overlord Gameplay Details, Different Editions and TGS Trailer Rides Out

In last week’s Nintendo Direct, ATLUS unveiled Unicorn Overlord, a new game from Vanillaware. Vanillaware is known for developing 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and Dragon’s Crown. The game looked great in its original showing, and we’ve received a more in-depth breakdown of what to expect from it today via TGS.

OuHere’s last week’s trailer for the game in case you missed it:

Look intriguing? Here are some things we learned from today’s press release about the game:

Story Overview

The story takes place on the continent of Fevrith, a land home to five nations—Cornia, Drakenhold, Elheim, Bastorias, and Albion—inhabited not only by humans, but also by other races such as elves, angels, and a race of beastfolk known as bestrals.

After Cornia’s General Valmore rebels against his nation’s royal family, he starts a war that will soon tear the entire continent apart. Alain, the protagonist of the game and prince of Cornia, flees from his home during this uprising and is chosen to lead the Liberation Army that will free all subjugated lands of Fevrith. Ten years have passed, and with the legendary Ring of the Unicorn in hand, Alain raises the flag of rebellion to lead his people to freedom.

Sounds intense! We’re bound to see a heavy dose of political intrigue and drama as is common with Vanillaware’s titles.

Gameplay Overview

  • The World’s Your Oyster – Freely traverse an expansive world, gather new allies, forge your bonds, and lead the Liberation to glorious victory.
    • Explore and battle in any order you want! Players can freely traverse an overworld map to meet and recruit new allies, fight enemies, and liberate and rebuild cities in any order they want. Where you’ll go next, which routes you’ll take, and which battles you’ll fight are entirely up to you!
  • Build Your Forces – Cultivate a grand army with over 60 unique characters, from humans and elves to massive beasts and heavenly angels.
  • Free to Roam – Traverse a vast overworld to liberate Fevrith from the Zenorain Empire’s rule. Reclaim towns and rebuild them with materials you’ve gathered, train your allies, and gather your strength to face ever more powerful foes!
    • Upon defeating the Zenoiran forces in control of towns and fortresses, law and order will be restored to the land and you’ll gain access to facilities such as armorers and provisioners. Wandering enemies are also defeated, making future exploration even easier.
  • Your Battles, Your Rules – Players can use characters as they see fit, forming powerful units to take into battle. It’s up to you, the commander of the Liberation Army, to decide who to send forth and what tactics to employ!
    • Within each battle stage, both sides will fight to take each other’s command posts in thrilling real-time combat. You, the commander, must keep a close eye on the situation and make critical decisions like which units to send when or where. Victory is secured once you’ve clear certain conditions, such as defeating the enemy general.
    • Individual battles begin when your units make contact with the enemy during a battle stage. Coordinate a unit’s tactics in advance with conditions that determine how and when skills will automatically be used.
    • Balance your allies’ classes and skills to form the strongest units for the situation and watch the battle unfold as your characters automatically engage in combat! Adapt and improve your tactics as you learn from the results of each battle.

Additional Details

Players can also choose to go head-to-head in an online PvP mode if they want to test their units out against a friend’s. This mode is referred to as “coliseum mode,” so expect some gladiatorial combat!

There are also three different difficulty modes. They’re described as follows:

  • Sweet – A difficulty focusing on story. For players looking to win battles without much difficulty.
  • Normal – A difficulty focusing on tactical gameplay. For players who may be unfamiliar with strategy games.
  • Hard – A difficulty focusing on pushing your tactical mind to its limits. For players who are quite skilled at strategy games.

Different Editions

Last, but most certainly not least, we’ve got a breakdown of the different versions of the game players can order. Here’s how they’re broken down:

  • Standard Edition Pre-Order Bonus – Pre-ordering the game with any version will grant you access to the ATLUS x Vanillaware Heraldry Pack, a DLC that will allow you to customize your army’s banner with designs from Vanillaware’s other games like Dragon’s Crown and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.
  • Digital Deluxe Edition – The Digital Deluxe Edition of Unicorn Overlord will include a 16-bit arranged soundtrack, a digital artbook, and, of course, a copy of the game.
  • Physical Premium Collector’s Edition – The Collector’s Edition will feature physical copies of everything included in the digital deluxe edition, as well as a premium edition box, a physical copy of the game, and a completely original card game for 2-4 players produced by Vanillaware.

Whew, that’s a lot of detail! If real-time strategy or fantasy settings are what tickle your fancy, we highly recommend keeping an eye out for this one. Pre-orders are available now, and you can find them here.

Unicorn Overlord launches on March 8, 2024 for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. To see what else ATLUS revealed at TGS, check out our breakdown of the latest Persona 3 Reload details.

Persona 3 Reload Battle System and Story Details Revealed, TGS Trailer Released

At TGS today, ATLUS had some updates to share regarding their upcoming remake. Namely, they went into depth on the Persona 3 Reload battle system and introduced Strega, a malevolent group that act as antagonists. They also dove into the new scenes we can expect to see from the game.

Here’s the new trailer from the Tokyo Game Show:

We have a detailed breakdown on the combat system from today’s press release:

Persona 3 Reload Battle System

  • Turn-Based Combat – Experience a familiar but enhanced turn-based Persona battle system! Hitting an enemy’s weakness will knock it down, allowing you to get a second attack in. Knocking all enemies down will trigger an All-Out-Attack! Aim for the enemies’ weaknesses and make use of multiple strategies to get the edge in battle.
  • Attack Affinities – Attacks and Skills all have affinities. Use these strategically to hit the enemies’ weaknesses. Hitting an enemy with an affinity that it’s weak to will increase the damage dealt and knock it down. Hitting enemies with critical hits is another way to knock them down.
  • All-Out-Attacks – Knocking down an enemy will trigger 1 More, allowing you to attack a second time in the same turn. When all enemies are knocked down, you can perform a flashy All-Out-Attack to deliver massive damage. Watch out, though—enemies can do the same to you, knocking your party members down by hitting their own weaknesses.
  • Persona 5 Features – Features that fans loved in Persona 5 have returned in Persona 3 Reload, such as Direct Command and Assist. Control each of your party members quickly and intuitively with direct commands, and use Assist to automatically target enemy weaknesses. The Baton Pass mechanic from Persona 5 has been brought to Persona 3 Reload as Shift. Strategically Shift your 1 More turn to allies and make quick work of your foes!
  • New Skills – A new kind of special skill called Theurgy has been added! These are high-powered abilities that can only be used when a character’s Theurgy gauge is full. The Theurgy gauge charges during battle when a character attacks, uses skills, or performs other actions. Each character’s personality influences what kinds of actions are the most effective at charging the gauge quickly. Pulling off these impressive skills at the right moment can turn the tides of battle!

Persona 3 Reload Additional Scenes

Atlus’ revamp also features some brand new story content to flesh out the world. Here’s what you can expect from those:

  • New Episodes – All-new Linked Episodes have been added in Persona 3 Reload! Sides of certain characters that have never been explored will be revealed in new story scenes! By giving your friends advice or hanging out with them, you can strengthen your bond and discover aspects of them you’ve never seen before. Support them enough, and those allies will receive upgrades and unlock new Persona fusions for you. Persona 3 Reload will also have completely new scenes focusing on members of Strega. Look forward to learning more about their past and perspective.

Persona players are especially fond of Persona 3, so this remake’s bound to be a treat to longtime fans. The game can’t come soon enough.

If you’re looking for more Persona content in the meantime, check out the latest updates on Persona 5 Tactica here.

Persona 3 Reload releases on February 2, 2024, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Black Ops Cold War Update 1.040 Sneaks Out

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War update 1.040 has been released on all platforms by Treyarch, and this is another unannounced patch that doesn’t seem to bring anything tangible to the table. Read on for what’s new in the patch notes.

Black Ops Cold War Update 1.040 Patch Notes:

Size: 39GB. 2.3GB (Steam), 5.9GB (Xbox)

So far, Treyarch has not made any mention of the patch notes or even acknowledge the update. Some Reddit members of the Black Ops Cold War subreddit states that this added new Modern Warfare 3 banners (you got to have that cross-marketing, right?), while others state that this is to add bundles in the in-game store.

The latest update from the Call of Duty Updates Twitter account mentions a matchmaking fix for Warzone and that’s it.

Bear in mind, the update could very well be tied to security, which was the reason for last month’s Black Ops Cold War patch.

Once we find more about the patch, we’ll let our readers know. If you spot any changes, leave a comment below and let us know.

Soulframe Post-Launch Content and Support Will Be Similar to Warframe’s Model

Soulframe made an impression during this year’s Tennocon with a demo, showcasing the game’s impressive graphics and gameplay. And while development on Digital Extremes’ next title seems to be running smoothly, it would appear that the studio is already thinking about the game’s future, as it confirms that Soulframe’s post-launch support will be similar to the Warframe model.

Speaking in the latest issue of PLAY Magazine (Issue 32, November 2023,) Chief Creative Officer Steve Sinclair had this to say when asked about Soulframe’s post-launch content and support.

“Yes. I think gamers can be rightfully exhausted by some of the different business models out there, but I’m hoping we can continue Warframe’s reputation as being when something cool comes out, [there’s] a general positive reaction [of] ‘I can’t believe I’m getting this for free. Okay, I’m gonna buy something because I like the devs, or there’s a wicked-ass cosmetic and I can’t live without it’. There are no barriers.”

For those unfamiliar with how the team handles content in Warframe, all major updates have been free, including expansions that have added entirely new open-world areas to the game and several other features.

There is a large amount of microtransactions in the form of cosmetics, resources, and even upgrades, but otherwise, the title is entirely free-to-play, with all significant content being available for free for every player.

These content drops usually drop several months apart from one another, though Warframe does keep players entertained with events and other updates between the major drops. But when a massive content drop does happen, no matter the reception of it post-release, many can agree that the content doesn’t match your standard GaaS drop, as they’re typically game-altering drops that feel more in line with a paid expansion, rather than being free.

Soulframe is currently in development, with a target release window of late 2024 and is slated for release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Criterion Now Focusing on Battlefield Franchise, “Core Group” to Work on Next Need for Speed

Criterion Games, the studio most known for developing racing games in the Need for Speed and Burnout franchises, is now all-in and focused on the Battlefield series.

This was announced by Vince Zampella, Group General Manager of Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi, Battlefield and Need for Speed.

In the statement, Zampella notes that the majority of Criterion staff will now be working alongside DICE, Ripple Effect, and Ridgeline, and is being led by Byron Beede GM of Battlefield. As for the Need for Speed franchise, a smaller, “core group” of staff members from Criterion will help shape its future per Zampella.

Here’s the important bit from the announcement:

As we’ve said before, we’re all-in on Battlefield. Today, Criterion is added to our world-class Battlefield studios dedicated to ushering in a new era for the franchise. The majority of the team will be working alongside DICE, Ripple Effect, and Ridgeline that are led by Byron Beede, GM of Battlefield. Criterion’s experience with Battlefield, our technology and building engaging experiences will have an immediate positive impact as we continue to work on Battlefield 2042, and as we continue pre-production on a connected Battlefield Universe. There is no better studio to join us on this journey and I couldn’t be more excited.

Work will also continue on what’s next for Need for Speed. Many of you might be familiar with my history in games, having worked with extremely talented teams on Apex Legends™, Titanfall, and Star Wars™ Jedi here at Electronic Arts. But you might not know I have a passion for cars, which also makes Criterion a perfect match for me to explore another genre in gaming that I love. I’m really looking forward to working with a core group as we shape what’s next for the franchise.

Note that this is not Criterion’s first time with the Battlefield franchise, as the studio has helped develop Battlefield Hardline, Battlefield 1, Battlefield V and even the latest entry in the franchise, Battlefield 2042.

The studio’s latest game, Need for Speed Unbound, was released last year for current-gen platforms and was met with primarily a positive response, though it doesn’t seem to have made quite an impact to gamers given the tepid post-launch support we’ve seen thus far.

Here’s to hoping the studio fares better in their Battlefield project.

Witchfire Early Access Opens Its Doors Alongside New Gameplay Overview Trailer

We first heard tell of The Astronauts’ new shooter Witchfire way back at The Game Awards in 2017. Now, a mere six years later, Witchfire Early Access has finally released, and it looks like a whale of a good time.

We’ll break down the gist of what this game’s about in a second, but first, check out the new gameplay overview trailer that also dropped this morning:

Looks awesome, right? In case you don’t feel like watching the entire video, here’s a quick summary of the game as laid out in today’s press release:

Armed with forbidden pagan magic and infernal firearms as one of the Vatican’s elite preyers, players will experience a world that adapts to their progress. The longer a preyer brazenly clings to life, amassing more power and a greater arsenal, the Witch will sense this growing threat and send forth deadly cataclysms and more powerful minions. Greater success means greater challenges to conquer.

Preyers have the freedom to choose their methods of witch-hunting: a sharpshooter’s agile fingers, a tactician’s analytical mind, or the warlock’s eldritch might and magical relics. Select or combine these tactics to determine the most suitable path to victory. Furthermore, the preyer is not bound by time restrictions— you can rush into a huge mob of enemies, eliminate them one by one from afar, steer clear of a fight, or provoke more battles for bigger rewards. Only you decide which path to embark upon.

The Astronauts previously developed The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, which gameplay-wise is very different from Witchfire. That being said, much of the team comes from developing games like Bulletstorm, and that DNA clearly shines through in the slick gunplay on display here. If you’re a fan of roguelikes and/or witches, this is definitely one to keep your eye on.

Witchfire is out today in Early Access on the Epic Games Store. The team hopes to eventually bring the game to consoles as well.

If you can’t get enough of creepy shooter content, check out the latest Call of Duty zombies trailer and lore breakdown for Modern Warfare 3.

Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty Review – Sympathy for the Edgerunner

While Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t exactly live up to CD Projekt RED’s lofty promises when it launched, slowly but surely, the studio worked its way to make the game not only respectable, but actually live up to its potential. This comes full circle with the game’s Phantom Liberty expansion set to launch next week. Will history repeat itself once more for CD Projekt RED? Read on to find out in our in-depth Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty review.

Seeing Red

The clock is ticking for V as he searches for a cure to save him from a relic, an experimental chip infested with the mind of Johnny Silverhand (Keanu Reeves); a known anarchist who, decades prior, detonated a nuke in Night City, killing hundreds of thousands in the process. For V, it’s a battle over control, but for Johnny, it’s about finishing what he started so long ago, his fight with the megacorp Arasaka. As it turns out, they’re the very ones behind the relic, and thus, a temporary truth is made between V and Silverhand as they set their eyes on Arasaka, taking down anyone who gets in their way.

But what if this wasn’t the only way for V to save himself? What if, by some miraculous chance, a netrunner who happens to be working with the New United State (NUS) president just so happened to be in a similar situation as V and knew that the only way to save herself was to enlist the aid of V, and in the process, offer a cure to save him from the curse of Silverhand?

Well, lucky V, that just so happens to be the premise of Phantom Liberty, as he soon finds himself working alongside the president, venturing off into the territorial space of Dogtown, waging a war, and coming to heads with its dictator, Kurt Hansen.

But like all things political, things aren’t quite as they appear, as ulterior motives begin to surface, raising questions of who can be trusted.

It’s a mystery that you’ll need to unravel, and one that’ll see you cross paths with a suave secret agent, Solomon Reed, who is played by none other than actor Idris Elba. Together, you’ll rip through Dogtown, uncovering all its secrets. However, this comes at a price, one that may be too high, even for a dying man.

Players will be thrust into this new world that CDPR has built, garnering relationships with new and familiar characters and making new enemies, all while being pushed to the limits and forced to make some of the game’s toughest decisions yet, all of which can have some dire consequences.

Phantom Liberty, in some ways, is both an expansion and an entirely new game. It’s not like most DLC/expansion stories where its plot takes place outside of the main campaign, which eventually forces players to go back to it once beaten. Instead, what CDPR offers with Phantom Liberty is an alternative path to the main plot. It’s a choice that, if taken, drastically alters the player’s experience of Cyberpunk 2077. So much so that you could beat Phantom Liberty without ever needing to beat its original campaign. I don’t think I’ve ever played a story expansion that wasn’t just that — an expansion or extension of the main game. Yet here, this “expansion” is more treated as a full game with how incredibly well it’s implemented.

You could jump right into Phantom Liberty, play through all it has to offer, finish it, and, in the process, also complete the main game, and that could pass off as your story for Cyberpunk 2077. That’s not to say that the base game is terrible, as I still highly recommend everyone, even new players, to play through it first. But undoubtedly, Phantom Liberty is a massive step — no leap — from what the original experience had to tell us.

There’s a lot I want to talk about, but so much of it is in the realms of spoilers that all I’ll say is that the story in Phantom Liberty alone makes it well worth the experience. The moment you first step into Dog Town, you’ll realize this is a very different game, and all for the better.

The bonds you’ll make with the characters, the twists and turns you’ll go through, every moment will have you sitting on the edge of your seat, with surprises and consequences awaiting around every drug-filled, adrenaline-pumping corner.

Now you all may be a bit cautious, seeing that CDPR has gotten yet another celebrity to star in the game, something that even I considered to be a marketing grab in the original with Keanu Reeves. But let me tell you, the studio has learned from those complaints, ensuring that Idris Elba isn’t some throwaway character for marketing’s sake. He shares just as much screen time as he would have in his very own movie, meaning expect to see him throughout the entirety of the expansion.

It’s a lasting impression, as his performance is top-notch, so much so I’d rate it amongst his bests, right up there with Luthor and The Wire. That may be due to the fact that Solomon Reed is very much inspired by those characters that you can’t help but make the comparison. It’s not his first video game performance he’s done, but it will undoubtedly be his most memorable as he brings a level of believability to Reed that you forget he’s playing a digital character.

The motion capture is on full display, too, and it’s incredible how such subtle expressions on a character can shift the tone of a scene. Idris really doesn’t hold anything back with Reed, though you may find, at times, his accent to come off a bit strange and inconsistent. Still, it’s a performance to remember once he gets rolling into all the drama of Phantom Liberty.

It’s not just him, though, as the whole cast of new characters all bring stellar performances, and even Keanu’s Johnny Silverhand feels like he has a whole new layer of personality with well-thought-out growth behind him this time.

I think fans are going to love to see how far these characters have come along with this expansion, and I’ve no question that it’ll be amongst the highlights of all the talk.

And speaking of highlights, the music, it’s absolutely phenomenal. You might have given it a listen already, but without the context behind it, it just isn’t the same. If you get hit with sheer feels every time you hear “I Really Want to Stay at Your House” from the Cyberpunk Edgerunner anime, wait until you listen to Phantom Liberty’s soundtrack with actual context. I can tell you every piece I went back to listen to, I knew instantly the very moment they were from, and whew, the range of emotions, from happiness to sadness to even downright terror that creeps over me listening to those tracks again.

I can’t say I remember many of the tracks from the base game outside the trailer themes, but the ones from Phantom Liberty? I get goosebumps just thinking about them.

And despite being a rundown town with druggies roaming the streets, Dogtown is surprisingly gorgeous. For a small section of Night City, it sure packs a lot of explorable vistas, all beautifully crafted. I love how there’s a clear hierarchy of power in the town, too. You’ll see residents who are surviving a day at a time, scavenging the streets for food and clothing, while near the center, you’ll encounter residents flaunting their wealth with expensive clothing and vehicles while hanging out in invite-only nightclubs and ballrooms. The campaign get’s really fun with the lighting and coloring, and while I’m allowed to show you those parts, I won’t because they look so damn good, you should really experience it yourself.

Elsewhere for other activities and content, Phantom Liberty introduces several new gigs, some of which have more chained quests, offering their own little side stories. These are outside the campaign, though some are also tied to it.

You never know what will happen when you take on a gig, as evident in one I took early in my campaign where a character was telling a story, only for me to be transported into that story from the perspective of a different character.

Another I found myself wearing the skin of a legendary hitman, and every time someone dropped his name, fear would strike their face with an audible Spanish guitar melody played. It sounds ridiculous, almost something out of a soap opera, but it’s executed so well that I couldn’t help but chuckle each time.

They’re some of the best gigs crafted by the studio, though you may find them a bit light in quantity. That’s probably my biggest disappointment with this expansion, as after my 10-12 hour run of the campaign, I found that Dogtown didn’t offer a whole lot else outside of those gigs. There’s an “endless” event that happens where a cargo drops randomly on the map. These contain gears such as weapons and clothing, crafting material, and even relic points inside of them, and upon arriving, there will be enemies guarding the drop. It’s a welcomed addition, but hardly anything I’d get excited for. There are also new weapons and vehicles, some of which have mounted weapons on them, which brings us to the next big, exciting thing: Cyberpunk 2077’s big 2.0 update.

Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 – Revamped, Reinvented, and Rebooted

Phantom Liberty has plenty to offer, but for those who aren’t quite ready to jump into it, CDPR does have a surprise dropping, and that’s in the form of update 2.0. It’s free for all players, and with it comes massive revamps and long-awaited features.

For returning players, you’ll notice that your skills and perks have been reset upon booting. That’s because they’ve been completely overhauled, not just in visuals to make them easier to navigate, but to the type of skills and perks available. There will be several ones that will be familiar, along with some new ones. One is the Edgerunner utility, which is based on the Edgerunner anime and even has a picture of David as the utility’s icon.

This perk allows users to exceed their cyberwar capacity but at the cost of V’s health. It also has a chance to inflict players with Fury, upping damage taken by 10%, but also increasing critical damage boost by 50% and critical chance by 30%. Lucy and Rebecca (both from the Edgerunner anime) also have available skills, adding a dash of their personality to players’ play styles.

And that’s sort of the point of the perks and skill tree revamp — to allow players to build the character they want to suit their playstyle. Want to play as a Netrunner who can quickly hack enemies and dice them up with Lucy’s finisher? What about a badass ninja capable of slowing down time, slicing incoming bullets, and even deflecting them back with a burning Katana? Maybe you’re all about brute force, smashing bones, and breaking faces. That’s all possible with the new perk and skill system introduced in 2.0. The best part is, despite this being a complete revamp, CDPR didn’t go out of its way to nerf things but gave players more options to become overpowered. Builds will play a significant role in the game once the 2.0 update is out this September 21.

In addition to the revamped 2.0 skill trees, Phantom Liberty introduces a set of skills under a new tree called Relic. These top-of-the-line implants are issued amongst the highest-ranking officers in NUS forces; at least, that’s what we’re told. In reality, they’re rather lackluster in quantity and upgrade paths.

That’s most likely due to the revamped skill trees and implants in the Relic tree meant to be paired with other skills, but looking at it, it does seem rather lackluster for what’s offered. So much so that it’d probably been best to throw them in the trees they correspond with rather than as a separate one.

Yeah, there’s not much to upgrade here, with over half the upgrades tied to the Mantis arm. Now, don’t get me wrong, the new skills are great, and mixing and matching them with other play styles opens the gameplay up immensely; I just wish it had a bit more. I like leveling things up, and seeing the cloak ability only have that many upgrades is disappointing. Who knows, maybe it’ll be a non-issue at release, or if it is one, maybe CDPR will give it a 2.0 treatment down the road.

The level cap has also been increased to level 60 for Phantom Liberty owners. Personally, I would have liked to see more than ten levels added, but that’s me.

The most significant addition to the 2.0 update is the new vehicle combat and police system. For vehicles, players will now be able to shoot freely from them, giving them the perfect countermeasure during chases. Chases happen now, too, with all factions over Night City and the police. These feel fantastic and add a new combat layer on top of the existing one. You’ll even be able to put those Netrunner skills to the test, as you can use quickhacks while driving.

Some vehicles also have mounted weapons on them, most exclusive to the Phantom Liberty expansion. Machine guns and heat-seeking rockets will be available for you to use, allowing you to wreak destruction all over Night City.

But the biggest change introduced in 2.0 is, without question, the police system. I teased this in my preview of the 2.0 update, and after spending more time with it, I’m thrilled with what CDPR has produced here. Mind you, I think it needs some improvements that I’ll go over in a bit, but for those thinking the police system wasn’t brutal enough, enter the 2.0 overhaul.

When you commit a crime in Night City, the police officers will no longer spawn out of thin air but instead drive out to you. That, in some ways, does mean that they take longer to get to you, but this approach feels more natural. Now, a 1-star wanted level is relatively easy to evade, as it’s usually one or two cops that get called to the area. However, if daring, you could continue breaking the law, ramping up that wanted level by killing and causing havoc in an area.

Instead of four stars, 2.0 now has five, with each level introducing a new police type and new police vehicles. Star Five will call in the Maxtacs, otherwise known as the Psycho Squad, who will be airlifted into the battlefield to add a bit of a cinematic touch. These guys are hard to kill and hurt like hell, and if they get called, chances are you won’t make it out alive.

The AI of the police officers has been improved, too, with them attempting to barricade and flank players at any chance. If you’re on foot and trying to stand your ground, you’ll get surrounded by the police quickly.

Attempting to flee via vehicle will be met with a city-wide chase. Multiple squad cars will trail you, shoot at you, and try to perform a breach to stall your vehicle. If they aren’t doing that, they’ll try to ram into you in hopes of flipping the car over. Some will even risk their own lives, playing chick with you, only they don’t chicken out. They do anything to disable your vehicle, even set up roadblocks throughout the city.

Civilians react more naturally than in pre-2.0 as they flee the scene at any sight of trouble. The city also no longer has any defense systems, such as turrets. I don’t miss these at all, as the new police system is far more fun than constantly being shot at by some automated system from afar.

How quickly you move up the wanted system has also changed—update 2.0 makes it “harder” to achieve higher levels. Pre-update, it only took 6-10 civilian kills to reach the max four stars. Killing that many in 2.0 will only get you to wanted level 2 or 3, with achieving wanted level 4 requiring nearly 50 kills from my tests and right around the same for wanted 5. I know, that’s a lot of kills, and maybe it should be nerfed a bit, but I did like how there was progression in the system now, giving you time to enjoy the different wanted levels.

Now, I did mention that there are some improvements I’d like to see to the system. If you play the whole cops and robber scenario and go through the shootouts, chases, and the eventual getaway via vehicle, the police system will feel perfect. But that’s a specific way of playing, and you’ll likely realize that evading a five-star wanted level is easy. How easy? Well, you can simply drive through a path, such as a side road, and the police won’t chase you there. Escaping on foot is just as easy as there are many side alleyways to duck into quickly. Wait a minute or so, and that wanted level will be gone.

It’s laughable considering what needs to be done to achieve Wanted level of five stars, as you’d expect they would start searching areas outside the main street. I suggested a fix for this in my preview, that being randomly spawning security cameras in place of the turrets, that way the wanted level remains and hopefully could, in some ways, improve pathing for on-foot officers to flock to areas they don’t typically go to.

Aside from that, though, the new police system is essentially everything I wanted from Cyberpunk 2077 at launch, and knowing CDPR and what they’ve done over the last few years, I’m sure we’ll see improvements with upcoming updates to the police system. At the very least, it’ll be easier now for modders on PC to tweak it better.

Electric Sheep Are Real, and They’re Marvelous

When CD Projekt Red launched Cyberpunk 2077 back in 2020, I, like many, were left feeling heartbroken. It was a game that didn’t fully live up to expectations, lacking not only features but also providing a functional experience for last-gen players. So much so that it eventually saw its removal from storefronts.

It was such a shock to see from a studio that previously delivered on a title that, in my opinion, holds the golden standard for open-world RPGs even to this day. The Witcher 3 was a behemoth, and its expansions that followed after somehow managed to propel the game to new heights, that I’d considered it to be amongst the greatest of gaming experiences out there. An essential must-play for any gamer out there.

And I know some will say it’s over-hyped and overrated, and I can accept that The Witcher 3 isn’t perfect around all its edges, but goddammit, it’s a fantastic game that delivered an experience like no other at the time, earning the studio fame, glory, and respect amongst gamers and developers alike.

So when Cyberpunk 2077 launched in 2020, it left me wondering what the hell happened to CD Projekt Red? My feelings about Cyberpunk 2077 were on the completely opposite spectrum of what I felt about The Witcher 3, and I couldn’t believe this was the same studio that made it. Was it greed? Overconfidence? Becoming too complacent? We’ll probably never know. And what is even the point of me bringing all this up, especially at the end of a review?

Well, it’s because I want to tell you that when it comes to Phantom Liberty, CD Projekt Red has come full circle, returning to their former selves that fans have thought so highly of. I had doubts going into this, though the studio has been making great strides with several updates over the years to warrant a revisit. But I held out, hoping for something bigger and what could be more significant than the game’s first expansion and newest feature update.

And it’s clear after playing through the expansion that CDPR has been listening to its fans. With Phantom Liberty, they have finally delivered the much-demanded experience players have asked for since launch. I’ll gladly say that Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty, alongside the 2.0 update, might be one of the best gaming experiences I’ve played all year, and looking back, there’ve been tons of amazing games this year.

I’m only saddened by the fact that this is the only expansion Cyberpunk 2077 is receiving. But I’m glad the studio has gone all out with it, incorporating so much feedback over the years to make the very game we’ve dreamt about. Whatever lies next for CDPR, well, that’s something only the studio knows for sure, but whatever it is, I hope they’ll take the lessons they’ve learned to heart with Cyberpunk 2077 because if they do, they’re looking at a bright future.

Score: 9.5/10

Pros:

  • Story – When I first stepped into Dogtown, I knew the story of Phantom Liberty would be special. Little did I know just how special it would be, as it’s filled with fantastic story beats that’ll keep you hooked from start to finish. Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, and the rest of the cast don’t disappoint.
  • A visual spectacle – If you thought Cyberpunk 2077 was a graphical showcase before, wait until you venture into Dogtown.
  • Soundtrack – A perfect example of how music can elevate a game’s narrative.
  • Update 2.0 changes the game completely, with Phantom Liberty making full use of those changes.

Cons:

  • A bit light on side quests – These are usually the highlights of CDPR’s games, and Phantom Liberty left me wishing there were more.
  • Relic Skill Tree leaves much to be desired, but it’s also meant to work with the 2.0 skill overhaul.

Phil Spencer Addresses Massive Xbox Leak, Calls It “Old” and How “So Much Has Changed”

The future of Xbox was seemingly leaked earlier today, with news of a mid-gen refresh, next-gen console, more acquisitions, and a number of unannounced titles surfacing from some accidentally published court documents. While there was a lot to digest, many were wondering if we’d hear any official response from the company itself, and sure enough, Xbox’s chief, Phil Spencer, has finally addressed all the commotion from today.

In a response posted on X (formerly Twitter,) Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, came out to acknowledge the leaks, though warned that while the documents were legit, much of the plans outlined in the 2020 emails and documents are “old” have already gone through changes.

“We’ve seen the conversation around old emails and documents. It is hard to see our team’s work shared in this way because so much has changed, and there’s so much to be excited about right now and in the future. We will share the real plans when we are ready.”

It’s not much of a response, if we’re honest, though that is unsurprising, given the nature of the leak and the info in it was intended for internal use only. Still, this makes us curious about what has been changed, as many of the details from the docs seemed to be centered around long-term goals rather than short-term ones. I guess we’ll have to sit tight to hear about all this from the company themselves. If some leaks come to fruition, we suspect we’ll hear more of these plans in 2024, the targeted year for the mid-gen Xbox Series X refresh.

As always, we’ll keep you posted on any new developments.

Titanfall 2 Gets “???” New Mystery Mode Leading Fans to Think It’s Teasing an Announcement

While Respawn Entertainment admitted earlier this year that development of Titanfall 3 was scrapped in favor of Apex Legends, a new game mode inserted in Titanfall 2 today has players buzzing with anticipation.

The studio has added a new mystery mode called “???” with the description “Your rockets will blot out the sun,” which is a line in reference to Zack Snyder’s “300” where a character says, “our arrows will blot out the sun,” to which Michael Fassbender’s character Stelios replies with, “then we will fight in the shade.” (Watch it here).

Add in the fact that the Titanfall 2 servers were all sorted out recently, and well, you can guess that people are in excited for this to be potentially something.

Some fans of the franchise have speculated that this could be a tease for a potential Titanfall 3 announcement. However, Reddit user and Titanfall fan  DroubGaming has come up with a plausible scenario to the 300 reference

The new gamemodes’s description is based off the movie 300. People have been speculating it’s 3 letters, the number is 3, titanfall 3. This ain’t what they are hinting. Titanfall 2 came out on the 28th of October, 2016. Now, this year, the 300th day is the 27th of October… A day before the anniversary. Do you see where I’m getting at? We are going to get something revealed on the 27th of October that is Titanfall related. That’s what the game mode is hinting at. If you realized something I haven’t please tell me in the replies.

That certainly lines up somewhat. Of course, if that is the point, we’re about 30 day off from the announcement, which is kind of far off to be teasing something in-game, no?

Could we finally be getting an announcement regarding a new game or new something in the Titanfall franchise? Fans (including this guy) certainly hope so. Let’s hope it’s not just a limited-time mode for Apex Legends or something, and Respawn is using Titanfall to hype it.

Evil Dead: The Game New Content Development Ceased; Switch Version Cancelled

Though its servers will remain active, Saber Interactive today announced that they are halting development of Evil Dead: The Game new content while also confirming the cancellation of the Switch Version.

In a statement issued on the game’s official X account, Saber Interactive has confirmed that Evil Dead: The Game will no longer receive any new content drop. This news is accompanied by the cancellation of the Switch Version.

As for the online servers themselves, the studio did say that they would remain open for the “foreseeable” future, with the team still addressing any major issues via patches.

“To the Evil Dead: The Game Community,

Today, we have made the decision not to pursue the development of new content for Evil Dead: The Game. We also confirm that we will not be releasing a Nintendo Switch version of the game.

We will keep the servers up for the foreseeable future and address any major issues that arise.

On behalf of the entire team at Saber, thank you for all the groovy times and your continued support.”

Evil Dead: The Game launched in June of 2022 and opened up to mixed reviews, though like the movie and TV series, it seemed to have garnered a following. However, as the months passed, players began to worry about the game’s future, as support seemingly began to slow down.

We suppose many in the community could see this coming, but nonetheless, it saddens us to see content support ending. And while they’ll remain active for now, it’ll only be a matter of time before the servers close themselves.
