Dragon Age Day 2021 – New Dragon Age Game Dev Update, Short Stories Revealed

In case you didn’t know, today, December 11, is Dragon Age Day. As part of Dragon Age Day 2021, BioWare has shared some new Dragon Age game dev update.

Here’s what BioWare had to say about the upcoming Dragon Age game, as well as new short stories for the franchise.

Dragon Age Day 2021:

Speaking of building new worlds and stories for you to explore, we want to let you all know that we’re still hard at work on building the next single-player focused experience for Dragon Age. We’re excited for next year when we can talk more about what we’re working on.

Here are the two new short stories released:

The Eternal Flame:

Thirty years ago, in 9:22 Dragon…

“Well? You tore me away from an experiment for this, Volkarin.” The shorter necromancer caught a hissing monster of bone and dried gristle in a skein of light. A twist of her hand, and it was ripped apart. “What does the wretched thing want?”

Emmrich Volkarin adjusted his collar pin. “Just a moment, Johanna.”

“Fine.” Johanna Hezenkoss scowled at the skull cradled in Emmrich’s hand. “Anything to stop that howling.”

The skull had started screaming, ceaselessly screaming, inside its niche in the Cobalt Ossuary of the Grand Necropolis. An attendant had noted it, informed the Mourn Watch, and a pair of necromancers had been dispatched.

They came to a junction. Emmrich placed the shrilling skull on a plinth. “What insights on the dead it could—”

“You already told me about your paper.”

“Come now!” Emmrich turned. “What sort of passion drives one spirit above the rest? What tangle of thoughts and heart returned this soul?”

“Mawkish drivel.”

“You must admit it’s an interesting variation on possession!”

The skull’s shrieks bounced through the corridor.

“It’s only some petty spirit too weak to become a demon.” Johanna ducked under a collapsed lintel. Statues of corpses lined the passage. A flick of her hand, and a green bolt of light smashed into a lanky shape lurking at the end. The demon twisted up, wreathed in smoke, as another volley hit. It gnashed its teeth and collapsed into itself.

“There. It should be safe for your corpse whispering.”

Emmrich closed his eyes. Whispers came, and when he spoke, the air vibrated. “By breath and shadow. By endless night. Tell us what haunts you.”

The skull’s sockets flared green. “Divided. Cold. Two graves where there should be one!”

“Twaddle.”

“Johanna!” Emmrich cleared his throat and turned back to the skull. “Tell me: what will grant you rest?”

Take this one… to sunken black walls… by silver flames…” The skull’s glow flickered, faded. It resumed its earsplitting shrieks.

“You possess a grand talent, Volkarin.” Johanna gave the smallest inclination of her head. “And you’ve honed your command of sub-astral manifestation.”

Emmrich beamed. “Why thank you.”

“But what does this wailing nuisance want down in the Crescent Fane?”

***

Emmrich leaned over a coffin ringed by bowls of silver fire. He placed the skull next to the body of an old woman, humbly dressed but crowned with white roses. The screaming stopped.

Mathilde…

“Your wife left gently, in her sleep, last midnight.” Emmrich smiled. “The records confirm she also wished to be interred together. You’ll not be parted again.”

There was a sigh. Did the old woman’s mouth quirk, or was that the dancing flames?

Johanna snorted. “All that fury, ending in another grave.”

“Oh, I don’t know.” Emmrich ran a hand along the coffin’s snowy marble. “It would be rather fine to possess such an enduring affection. Besides, you did see this through.”

“Someone had to ensure you weren’t beheaded while chattering with the dead.”

“I am grateful for enduring friendships, as well.”

“Bah!”

They made their way back up the Grand Necropolis in companionable silence.

Won’t Know When:

Warden Evka Ivo groaned and lay back against the rough stone. The ogre was dead. A half dozen arrows protruded from its throat and the left side of its skull was crumpled inward from the final blow of her dwarven hammer. She could rest for a moment.

“They made it out,” Warden Antoine said from above her.

“Good,” Evka said. The point of putting themselves between hapless miners and ogre-shaped death was to get the hapless ones out. Even if that meant a few bruises. And maybe a cracked rib. Antoine lowered himself to the ground next to her, wincing at his own aches. The two lay on their backs, staring up at the shadowed cave ceiling.

“We made it too,” Antoine offered. He picked up a stone and fidgeted it between his fingers. The elf never could stay still.

“This time.”

Antoine laughed. “You said that last time we fought an ogre.”

“It was ogres last time. More than one. The third nearly took your head.”

“Ah, but I tested a new formula!”

Evka smirked, recalling the corrosive tang of Antoine’s experimental concoction. “That’s right. You nearly blew us both up.”

“I never said it was a good plan.” Antoine tossed the stone into the air and caught it. “But the halla went back to those fields. There were fawns last time we were through.”

“You remember the darkspawn outside Kassel?” Evka asked. The darkspawns’ blighted presence had poisoned the water. The brackish swamplands filled with grey sludge. Birds died. Villagers begged for rescue between gurgling coughs. Evka had walked from the village alone and into a monstrous horde.

“You were sick,” Antoine said. “But you bought me time.”

“And you stopped the spread.”

“You said I owed you soup.” Antoine gave the stone another toss.

“There was that demon in the Merdaine.”

“I hate demons,” Antoine muttered.

“I don’t think it liked you either.”

“At least our book was only singed. That mystery story. We were on the last chapter.” Antoine grinned. “I fared better than you against those hurlocks in the High Reaches.”

“There’s barely a scar. I wasn’t bit by a… what was that thing outside Arlathan?

Antoine’s hand went briefly to his shoulder. “I still don’t know. But we made it. Close as it was.”

“Point is, there’s a lot of ways for Wardens to die,” Evka said.

“And a lot of days you keep living,” Antoine countered softly.

“Dernel went on his Calling,” Evka said.

Antoine didn’t respond. He set the stone down. He hadn’t known.

Dernel hadn’t been that old, but the blight in his blood—in all Warden blood—told him it was the end. Evka had walked him to the Deep Roads one last time. He’d die fighting the monsters below.

“Being a Warden kills you one way or the other,” Evka said. “And we won’t know when for either of us.”

“I’m not afraid if you aren’t.”

From deeper in the cave, Evka could sense darkspawn moving. They didn’t have much time before more monsters arrived. But they had some.

“Ask me again,” she said.

He picked up the stone, put it down again, then turned all his focus on her. “Evka Ivo, will you marry me?”

“Yes.” And she kissed him.

Apex Legends Game Director Departs Respawn, Pens Letter to Community

We’re here with some sad news, legends! Chad Grenier, the Game Director of Apex Legends, has announced that he is leaving Respawn Entertainment after 11 years! Grenier has penned a letter that thanks the studio and the community.

Here’s Grenier’s letter in full:

Few words can elegantly describe my 11 years at Respawn. After helping to co-found the studio, bring the Titanfall universe to life, and launch the incredible experiment that is Apex Legends – it’s been an unforgettable ride to say the least. But today, this crazy chapter comes to an end.

Apex Legends is in great hands and I feel like I can walk away knowing this game and community will continue to be taken care of. We’ve got years worth of content in flight, and I can’t think of anyone better than Steven Ferreira to take over as the game director and make sure it’s done right. Steven joined as a lead on the Apex Legends team shortly after launch in June 2019, where he’s been running half of the team and serving as my right hand for the other half. At Respawn, we’ve always believed that new leadership and new team members mean new ideas, new energy, and new innovations. This couldn’t be a more accurate statement to describe Steven’s many contributions over the years.

As I step away from Respawn, it’s important to let you know how much everyone at the studio and I appreciate the fans and this passionate community. Without you, this whole making games thing just doesn’t work. And we’ve accomplished some truly extraordinary things together, from integrating fan art into the game to seeing the community bring Apex Legends stories to life on Twitter. It’s been an absolute joy to watch the game and community grow.

To Vince and the entire team at Respawn, making great games isn’t easy and it’s been an honor to create these worlds and experiences with you. I’m so proud of all that we’ve built together and excited about the possibilities these franchises hold for years to come.

Even after all this time, I feel like a kid leaving the nest, and, as corny as it sounds, leaving a family behind. I’ll be bringing the experience and lessons learned from this incredible group to everything I do down the road. It will probably be tough to see the game continue to thrive and succeed in my absence, but that’s a good thing. So, I’m looking forward to the great things this team will achieve as they take Apex to the next level and further than we thought was possible when this journey first started. You can bet I’ll be cheering from the sidelines along the way.

-Chad Grenier

We here at MP1st wish Grenier nothing but the best in his future endeavors. Apex Legends has left a lasting impact on the gaming industry, and it wouldn’t be where it is today without his contributions.

In other Apex Legends news, the Raiders Collection Event is headed to the game next week! Read up on the new stuff in it, as well as the patch notes.

EA Building a “Connected Battlefield Universe,” Halo Creator Working on World-Building & Narrative

While fan reception on Battlefield 2042 has been mixed, that doesn’t seem to have deterred EA from pushing forward with the brand, as the publisher is looking to created a “connected Battlefield universe” with the help of some prominent and experienced video game developers.

In case you didn’t see the news, Respawn Entertainment boss Vince Zampella is now the head honcho when it comes to the Battlefield franchise. In an interview, Zampella mentioned that their intent isn’t to replace BF2042, but to create a connected universe with it.

This is an ‘And’ strategy in many ways. We will continue to evolve and grow Battlefield 2042, and we’ll explore new kinds of experiences and business models along the way that we can add to that foundation to provide an awesome array of experiences for our players. In this universe, the world is interconnected with shared characters and narrative. This universe is also built with our community as we harness the power of Portal and user generated content that puts creativity in the hands of our players. – Vince Zampella, Respawn co-founder & Battlefield franchise big boss

Mind, this “universe” seems to have already started not only with Battlefield 2042, but with Battlefield Mobile as well. Working alongside the franchise with DICE is Ripple Effect Studios (formerly DICE LA) who worked on Battlefield Portal, and the studio’s co-founder, Marcus Lehto (best known as creator of the Halo franchise) is now also working on “world-building” forming a narrative within the Battlefield franchise. Also of note, the Battlefield “experiences” these devs are making doesn’t necessarily mean games, as they can be in the form of other entertainment mediums as well.

While there’s nothing to announce today, EA has already said that it would “make sense” for the Battlefield franchise to have a free-to-play component in the future. Given the world-building involved, don’t be surprised if this is part of the Battlefield universe EA is creating.

Is a wider Battlefield universe something you’d be interested in? Or do you think EA should focus on making their games perform better first?

Rumor: Destiny 2 30th Anniversary Event Will Have a Halo Crossover According to New Images

With the 30th Anniversary event for Destiny 2 fast approaching and Bungie being incredibly careful of showing their entire hand for the new stuff, it’s no wonder that some in the Destiny community took it upon themselves to speculate on what we all could expect for this big update. The one gaining the most traction right now points to Bungie’s roots, as it’s rumored that the 30th Anniversary of Destiny 2 will feature a Halo crossover.

The speculation comes mostly from new images that Bungie has released to promote the 30th Anniversary which shows the brand-new three-man activity coming next week. At a cursory glance, it may seem like just another Destiny 2 image, showing off a room filled with treasure and six Guardians heading towards it. Looking closer, though, and you may be able to see something interesting.

destiny 2 halo

Can you spot it? According to some eagle-eyed players, there are some Halo weaponry to be seen in the image. The Guardian on the far left appears to be sporting a Halo Battle Rifle on their back, while two other Guardians – the Bronze Titan in the middle and the Guardian on the far left – are carrying Covenant-looking wepaons with them, perhaps the Beam Rifle or the Covenant Carbine.

It’s important to note that all of this is speculation at this point, so take everything with a grain of salt until officially confirmed. For all we know, these may just be inspired by Halo weapons as they are a huge part of Bungie’s identity, but not exactly a direct crossover for Destiny 2 with Microsoft’s franchise.

In any case, we’ll know what it is soon enough, as the 30th Annivesary patch for Destiny 2 is coming next week, December 7. Stay tuned here at MP1st for the complete patch notes once it drops.

Report: Sony to Launch PlayStation Competitor to Xbox Game Pass; Will Feature PS1 to PS5 Games

Sony is apparently planning a PlayStation competitor to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass, with the service to offer different tiers featuring different varying choices. The service, codenamed ‘Spartacus,’ will also be getting older PlayStation titles from the PS1, PS2, PS3, and even the PSP.

The report comes from Bloomberg, where several insiders have apparently told of Sony’s plans for the competing service. It will reportedly combine the existing PlayStation Plus (which is the online multiplayer component that offers free games every month) and PlayStation Now (Sony’s own game streaming service) into one, the end result being something akin to Microsoft’s existing Xbox Game Pass.

The report also mentions that this service will be available on not only the PlayStation 5 but the last-gen PlayStation 4. Given that the PS5 is still quite hard to get due to scalping and chip shortages, Sony tapping into the massive existing PlayStation 4 userbase would make a lot of sense. The service would also reportedly have three tiers:

  • 1st tier – will offer existing PlayStation Plus benefits.
  • 2nd tier – will offer large catalog of PS4 and PS5 games, eventually.
  • 3rd tier – will offer extended demos, game streaming, and the old library of PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games.

As is with everything unsubstantiated, take everything with a grain of salt until officially confirmed.

Trials of Osiris Map

Convergence

Rewards

  • Reputation Rank 4: Upgrade Module (2)
  • Reputation Rank 7: Enhancement Prism (3)
  • Reputation Rank 10: Trials Weapon (Changes on every rank reset)
  • Reputation Rank 13: Upgrade Module (2)
  • Reputation Rank 16: Trials Weapon (Changes on every rank reset)
  • Flawless Reward: The Messenger (Legendary Pulse Rifle) (Adept)

Reputation System, Trials Engrams, and Adept Farming

Win individual rounds within each match to gain trials reputation. The amount of reputation you gain increases with each round you’ve won on your card. Earn enough reputation, and you’ll be able to claim a Trials Engram from Saint-14! This engram can be focused into any currently available trials loot you have previously obtained, or it can be taken to Master Rahool for a random Trials drop. Your reputation increases after every match completion, based on the amount of round-wins on your card, regardless of the result of that match itself (win or lose, 0-5 or 5-4).

Once you have gone flawless, keep playing! Every win on your still-flawless card will give you a chance at bonus, additional post-match drops of the Adept weapon for that week. Once you lose a game, you will no longer get these adept drops. However, still winning games at 7 wins even on a non-flawless can can drop bonus trials engrams, prisms, and even ascendant shards.

When you’re done, you can cash in your 7-win passage for one additional adept drop, granted you have gone flawless that week. This resets your card so you can start anew.

Passages

Destiny 2 Next Update Patch Notes Preview for 30th Anniversary Revealed by Bungie

In one final weekly update before the big patch, Bungie shared the Destiny 2 next update patch notes preview for the 30th Anniversary, informing players on what to expect on December 7. In less than a week, Bungie will be dropping their last big patch before Destiny 2‘s next big expansion next year, The Witch Queen. Check out the rundown below.

Destiny 2 Next Update Patch Notes Preview

Photosensitivity Changes
  • Screen Explosions
    • Reduced the bright flash/intense glows.
    • Updated near fade on particles.
  • Hive Headshot and Darkness Blast
    • Hive headshot VFX intensity reduced.
    • Hive Darkness blast detonation and projectile intensity reduced.
  • Taken projectiles and muzzle flashes
    • Arc rifle, Taken slug rifle, Necromancer VFX reduced intensity and normalized lights.
  • Hallowed Lair Boss Fight
    • Adjusted intensity/particle near fade for multiple VFX in boss fight.
    • Area of Effect tell intensity (how players understand the boss is casting Lightning).
      • Lightning Strike particles and light intensity reduced.
      • Impact particle near fades updated.
  • Cloud brightness animation frequencies slowed down.
    • Decals reduced in intensity.
  • Scorn VFX
    • Intensity of spawn/object effects.
    • Performance and near fades updated on spawn.
    • Toxic muzzle flash, projectile, performance and intensity tweaks.
  • Finisher Intensity
    • Adjusted shader and lights on finisher to not bloom.
  • Arc Abilities & Screen Effects
    • Arc object effect debuff have reduced intensity when in close proximity/first person.
    • Reduced on/off flashings of Arc screen effects.
    • Reduced on/off flashing of Arc screen shaders.
Blind Well
  • Dreaming City weapons now drop more frequently upon successful Blind Well completions.
      • If you’re looking to round out your Dreaming City weapon collection, we highly recommend giving the Blind Well a few runs!
Exotic Ornaments: Previews and Purchases
Starting next Tuesday, we’ll be adding a new avenue for players to discover and acquire Exotic ornaments. While players may still hop in to the Eververse to purchase Exotic ornaments, they will also be visible and purchasable when inspecting a given Exotic weapon or armor piece.
As an example, Le Monarque will be receiving a sweet new ornament in the 30th Anniversary release (thanks to a recent community poll for future ornaments – thanks to all who voted!) When booting up Destiny 2, you can inspect your beautiful bow, tab down to the ornaments section, and purchase the ornament straight from the weapon itself. For armor pieces, this can be done either by inspecting the armor itself, or through the Guardian Appearance screen.
Featured ornaments may be purchased with Silver. If the ornament is available for Bright Dust on a given week, it will also be available for Bright Dust on the inspection screen.
We hope this makes it a little easier to find these items as we continue to build new looks for existing Exotic weapons and armor pieces.
Rusted Lands: Bring Back the Booms
  • Fixed an issue where dynamic objects, like barrels or bricks with physics and Hive exploding objects, were missing from this map
The Corrupted: General Strike Fixes
  • To reduce the overall length of the strike and make it less painful after hard wipes in the elevator encounter, we have removed the Taken combatants in the dark Ascendant Plane hallway leading up to the elevator.
  • If a fireteam hard wipes during the final phase of the boss fight in the Ascendant Realm, when they respawn the portal to the Ascendant Realm will take them straight to Phase 2, instead of making them replay the platforming section between Phase 1 and Phase 2.
  • When a fireteam arrives at the platforming area before the boss fight in The Adytum, any fireteam members or Ghosts left behind in earlier parts of the strike will now be teleported forward to join their fireteam.
  • When players begin the elevator encounter, any straggler players or their Ghosts will be pulled forward to join their fireteam.
  • Fixed an issue where Sedia’s shields would regenerate faster than expected on Nightfall difficulties. Her shields now regenerate based on health threshold in Nightfalls, just like they do in Direct Launch or the Vanguard Playlist.
  • The portal to the Ascendant Realm after Phase 1 of the boss fight should now reliably place players facing the correct direction.
  • Fixed an issue that was preventing the combatants from walking to part of the right-side area during the first half of the boss-fight. Psions should now spread out a little bit more on that right platform.
  • Fixed an issue where a Taken Acolytes was spawning and immediately falling to its death during the floating platform area before the boss fight.
  • Fixed an issue where, in certain conditions, the relic would de-spawn and never respawn during the boss phase.
  • Fixed a cosmetic issue where the relic spawners during the boss would spin before the relic was spawned.
Wait, What about Dunemarchers?!
A few weeks back, we let players know that a few issues with Dunemarchers would be addressed in the upcoming patch. The goal is to remove instances of players being “double chained” by lightning created by these Exotic legs upon a successful Titan punch. Please note that it will still be possible to die to chain lightning when having low health. If you’ve taken damage from a different opponent or been hit by some AOE damage from a well-placed ballistic slam, you may still fall victim to the Dunes…
  • Once a player is hit by a Dunemarchers lightning chain, they cannot be hit again by Dunemarchers for 2s.
  • Dunemarchers lightning now only chains on targets that are alive.
Icefall Mantle
  • Stasis overshield can now be cancelled by pressing the class-ability input once more.

Cross-Play Updates
      • Display-only text chat will be available for all consoles with the release of the 30th Anniversary Pack on December 7.
      • With the launch of The Witch Queen, USB keyboard text chat will arrive for consoles.
What is Display only text chat on consoles (30th Anniversary)?
      • You’ll be able to turn on text chat display in your settings.
      • By using the Ghost menu, you’ll be able bring up the display again if you’d missed a message.
      • You will not be able to send messages, but you will finally be able to read what your PC fireteam mates are chatting about.
What does USB keyboard text chat on consoles mean (The Witch Queen)?
      • You will NOT be able to move your character via the keyboard.
      • You’ll be able to invoke the text chat window by pressing enter.
      • You’ll be able to text chat using the full suite of chat channels in Destiny.
      • You will be able to pick from five different font size display options.
      • IME support will follow in an update shortly after Witch Queen.

UPDATE 3.4.0 RELEASE SCHEDULE

Next Tuesday, December 7, Destiny 2 Update 3.4.0, the 30th Anniversary Pack, and Moments of Triumph will be released. View our Destiny Server and Update Status page for maintenance times, as well as the timeline below:
      • 8 AM PST (1600 UTC): Destiny 2 maintenance begins.
      • 8:45 AM (1645 UTC): Destiny 2 is brought offline.
      • 9 AM (1700 UTC): Destiny 2 Update 3.4.0 will begin rolling out across all platforms and regions.
      • 10 AM (1800 UTC): Destiny 2 maintenance completes.
UPCOMING KNOWN ISSUES
      • Forsaken Ciphers – Forsaken Ciphers don’t appear in a player’s loot stream if players already own Forsaken. The Ciphers can be picked up from the Forsaken section of the Monument to Lost Lights Exotic Archive in the Tower. They will end up in a player’s Consumables inventory, but if the inventory is full, they may go to the Postmaster. Players should pick these up immediately so that they don’t get pushed out of the Postmaster.
      • Moments of Triumph – One Triumph’s description states that one Lost Sector on Master Difficulty needs to be completed, but there are four that need to be completed.
DESTINY 2 LEAVING XBOX GAME PASS
On December 8, Destiny 2 and its expansions (Forsaken, Shadowkeep, and Beyond Light) will leave Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming for Xbox consoles. Destiny 2 will remain on the Xbox Game Pass for PC.
Once Destiny 2 leaves Xbox Game Pass, players who don’t own any of the expansions on the Xbox platform will lose access to:
      • Expansion quests and campaigns.
      • Stasis Subclass, which is Beyond Light-specific.
      • The middle-tree Supers for each subclass. The purchase of any major expansion (sans Bungie 30th Anniversary Pack) will unlock these Subclass supers.
      • the 10% off perk for Silver purchases and other game add-ons.
Items, such as Exotics, already acquired will still be available for players who earned them, and Season Passes will remain active.
That’s about it for the Destiny 2 next update patch notes preview. Once this huge update drops, we’ll be sure to let our readers know, so stay tuned.

Take-Two Hits It Takes Two Developer With Trademark Claim

Josef Fares and his studio Hazelight has been hit with a trademark claim from Take-Two Interactive over the name of their latest hit title, It Takes Two. The copyright claim has also subsequently forced the developers to abandon their trademark of the name, as shown by ensuing records.

First reported by Eurogamer, it appears that the trademark claim over the game title’s closeness over that of the publisher. Hazelight issued a response via Eurogamer, saying that while they “cannot comment on ongoing disputes”, they are “hopeful it will be resolved”.

Even though Hazelight is hopeful for a resolution, it did not change the fact that the developer have abandoned the trademark as per an official notice. It will be interesting to see how this case moves forward in the future, and if it will affect It Takes Two in any meaningful way in terms of sales and marketing for the game.

In case you missed it, check out our review of GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition Review on the PS5 (4/10), where our own Jimmy Lara wrote: “I like to think that some thought was put into the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy Definitive Edition, at least when it came to the quality of life improvements. But outside of that, it’s hard to say that this is the definitive way to play these all time classics. The end product of Grand Theft Auto Trilogy Definitive Edition feels more like a mod created from one person. And that would have been more forgiving if that was the case, however, it’s a full team (a small one granted) and the end result just simply isn’t on par with the level of expected quality.”
