Rainbow Six Siege North Star Announced, New Operator “Thunderbird” Incoming

Those looking for the next phase in Rainbow Six Siege’s content plans, Ubisoft has announced the Year 6 Season 2 (Y6S2) title update called “North Star,” and the new operator coming with the patch!

There’s a trailer and info straight from the press release.

In North Star, players will discover a brand-new Defender: Thunderbird. She can deploy a Kóna Healing Station, which heals any player – ally or enemy – close to this device, even if they are downed. The Kóna Station has a cooldown between each charge. Thunderbird is a low armor, high-speed operator, equipped with a SPEAR .308 or SPAS-15 as primary weapon, and BEARING 9 or Q-929 as a secondary weapon.

Same as in every major title update, expect a reimagined map (Favela) when it drops. According to Ubisoft, the changes in Favela will give it “better navigation,” and “improve readability” by making sure players know where they are and they’re going.

North Star will be available on Test Servers on May 25, where two new features such as the revamped armor syste and activities after death will be available.

On Test Servers, two new features will be tested: a revamped armor system and activities after death. Players’ armor will be converted to additional health so they have better visibility on their armor’s impact. Additionally, players will have new activities after death, with Attackers being able to control their own drones while some Defenders will be able to use their gadgets after their death (including Maestro, Echo or Mozzie). These changes will have a strong impact on gameplay and need to be tested to get players’ feedback. They will be available on the Test Server only and will not release on live servers at North Star launch.

Additional updates coming with North Star include:

  • Scoreboard 2.0
  • New corpse icons
  • Bullet holes fix
  • Operator balancing (Melusi, Mira, and Maestro tweaks and Gas Propagation rework)

Hitman 3 Needs an Esports Scene

There are a huge number of Esports games out there. Some have been purpose-built for a competitive multiplayer scene, such as Overwatch, Valorant, and League of Legends. Others have fallen into the Esports realm after players have gotten too competitive amongst their own competitions. Rainbow Six Siege is almost an example of this, but a better one is CS:GO. Valve had no idea what they were getting into when they made the most popular Esports shooter in the world. But there’s a lack of variety in Esports. Some games like Farming Simulator have broken the mold, but there needs to be more. For that, we believe that Hitman 3 is the game.

If you’re unfamiliar with Hitman 3, it’s a game in which players control the protagonist, Agent 47, through a series of missions, killing targets in several different ways. The Hitman community has grown exponentially thanks to the Hitman reboot trilogy, developed by Io Interactive, which is bookended by Hitman 3. Each mission can be approached in a myriad of ways, and new ones are being added all the time, both by the developer and the community.

There’s already a soft Esports scene around the game. Players compete in the same mission to get the highest scoring completion, which is almost always a Silent Assassin run. However, there’s also a competitive angle to how fast you can complete each mission. In this category, it doesn’t matter what score you get. It’s all about speed. Generally, the speedrun category tasks players with running through a series of missions in a particular order. The winner is the player to complete the final mission first. This is the more common way players currently compete in the game, but both are equally acceptable in forming a professional league.

The great thing about Hitman 3 is that every player can create new strategies. The speedrun or high score run that works well for one player may not be right for another. It all depends on skill and which levels a player is most comfortable with. For example, some players love the second mission in Hitman 3, Dartmoor. It has the best set pieces in the game, and the location is packed with opportunities to kill. Some players dislike the location, though, claiming that it’s too boring. Instead, these players opt for Chongqing or Mendoza, two areas that are packed with equal opportunities to kill, but they’re set in a much more interesting locale.

The variety in missions is only expanded when you bring those from the first two Hitman games into the mix. This is possible because Hitman 3 can accommodate these missions and upgrades them with some added features exclusive to the third game. As a result, you have three games worth of missions to exploit for an Esports scene, and that’s just across the point-scoring and speedrunning categories.

The only challenge you might come up against is getting players into the Hitman 3 Esports scene. Most Hitman 3 fans will jump at the chance to play the game competitively, but others will need convincing before they move over from another, more lucrative game. For that, all you have to do is track the potential earnings through a site like Olybet, where you can see what the odds of you winning are. If people are willing to bet on you, you can definitely make money playing the game. As soon as players see what they could be earning, they’d be mad to pass up an opportunity to become a Hitman 3 Esports pro.

Report: New Battlefield 2021 Screenshots Leak, Features Bits of Reveal Trailer Intro

While we’ve already had screenshots of this year’s Battlefield 2021 allegedly surface, more new Battlefield 2021 screenshots have been posted today, and it seems based on the same footage from the previous one (which was said to be the reveal trailer).

The images aren’t really new, as it features most of the same backdrop as the previous ones, though this time we see bits of what looks like the intro as the EA, and DICE logos flash across the screen. Check out the screens below, as well as a gif of it in one go.

https://imgur.com/a/Vrww9xg

https://imgur.com/a/JSl0teE

According to reliable leaker Tom Henderson, around “80%” of the trailer has leaked so far, which if true, is a lot. That said, t is a bit weird that EA has not commented on this, or has not ordered these posts to be taken down.

We’re just a few months away from June, which is when we’ll officially see the Battlefield 2021 trailer be released. Will we see the same stuff from leaks in the trailer, or something new completely? And will the actual trailer itself be leaked before EA manages to release it officially? I wouldn’t be surprised if it does.

Thanks, Reddit!

Metro Exodus PC DualSense Support Features Working Haptic Feedback & Adaptive Triggers, Watch It in Action

Developer 4A Games has recently released a hotfix for the PC version of Metro Exodus, and this is to add PS5 controller support for the game along with a few fixes! Curious how the Metro Exodus PC DualSense support has turned out so far? Check it out in action below.

In a Reddit thread discussing the DualSense support to the game, Reddit user MustafaKorkmaz confirmed that the support is “plug & play,” and no extra fiddling is needed!

Plugged in with the cable it came with and just ran the game 🙂 Haven’t used any software. I guess the game natively support the device.

In addition to that, the same redditor also posted a video featuring how proper haptics are supported and it’s not your typical rumble feature:

You can check the full list of fixes rolled out by 4A Games below (via Steam):

A new hotfix has been deployed for Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition, check out the hotfix notes:
Steam Version Number: 2.0.0.1

• Fixed issue with DLC Entitlements unlocking incorrectly
• Fixed issue where Vsync would lock to 60fps even when higher refresh rate is possible
• Fixed crash in Two Colonels specific to RTX2060
• Added PlayStation 5 DualSense Controller support

If you’re planning on playing Metro Exodus on current-gen consoles, don’t forget that it’s been upgraded by 4A, which you can read about here.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends Review – Brutal Heist

Sumo Digital has released a new take on the Robin Hood mythos, and has made it the focal point for its PvPvE multiplayer game, Hood: Outlaws & Legends. Instead of the story aspect, the studio decided to forgo that. and pour all their resources into crafting a different take on multiplayer. Has the studio succeeded or is this a multiplayer experience worth forgetting? Read on for our Hood: Outlaws & Legends review.

Robin Hood Steals…Nothing.

After completing the introductory mission and learning all the ropes, you are thrown into a small camp, which serves as the game’s central hub. Here, you can do a few things, though most of it will be spent in slotting new character perks and matchmaking.

There isn’t a whole lot to do here, which sadly seems to be the general complaint of Hood. As of writing, Hood: Outlaws and Legends only has a single game mode that stretches across five well crafted maps. There’s no single-player, which is fine as the game was always online focused, but being that, it is a rather huge disappointment to have so little. It’s a damn shame to be honest.

The one mode that Hoods has is called “Heist,” and this is a multi-objective team-based game where the goal is to steal a treasure chest and escape the area before the other team does. It’s a pretty simple game mode, but one that is heavily layered in its multi-step process.

Matches all begin with a full party of players, two teams of four, each starting out on opposite ends of a map. The first team objective is to collect a key, which is being held by a Sheriff. Sheriffs are basically large knights that deal high damage. They patrol each level, and despite being able to kill every other NPCs, Sheriffs can only be stopped momentarily. Because of this, the wisest approach is always stealth so that you can easily steal the key from one.

This first phase is usually the warm-up, a great opportunity for you and your teammates to be total badasses as you sneak around and kill NPCs in the most Assassin’s Creed-like way. Take that as a good compliment, because it’s actually very fun, something I wished out of Assassin’s Creed Unity when it originally released.

Once you and your team have successfully gotten the key, your next objective is to infiltrate a stronghold and locate the treasure chest. Things really take a turn here, as the stakes become riskier with the opposing team now likely on your tail.

I found from a combat standpoint we were now more in a rush to capture situation, no longer focusing on staying hidden, but instead rely on strength to breakthrough lines of defenses and swiftly dealing with other players. Having a full team go in and tactically take out another as we battled over a key felt really fun. And this same excitement continued on even in the final phases of transporting the treasure chest to our boat for safe travel.

The final objective in a Heist is to transport the treasure chest, and to move it onto a boat using a mechanical lift. Here, the match turn into a capture and defend type of mode, although one or two players are immovable as they work the lift. An interesting twist that requires full team work.

Winning a match is a pretty satisfying feeling, especially when everything works exactly as it should. What I love even more about this mode is that no matter how much progress one team makes over the other, the losing team still has a chance of making a comeback as all progress made is essentially shared. In a game that doesn’t score based on kills, it’s nice being able to trade advantages between the team.

I’ve had countless matches where we were losing badly in the first two phases (and vice-versa) with the last minute leading to a major balance shift. That can mostly be chalked up to the fact that there are capture points loitered throughout the maps that serve as spawn points. For me who love playing as a lone wolf in a game, these capture points are a nice addition as they really feel like they can turn the tide of battle. Seeing a team dominate from the very start, only to be decimated by well planned captures adds a strategic value to Hood, and a very fun one at that.

I feel a lot of work was put into Heists, as it’s well thought out. However, after it didn’t take very long to feel like I’ve exhausted all there was to offer in Hood. While I still had much leveling and perks to unlock, the whole one game mode thing is a pretty big deal breaker, especially for an online-centric game.

And as mentioned, it’s a shame because I really do like how Heists operate and would have loved to see what more the team had to offer in some other unique modes. Granted there is a new one coming in the first year roadmap, along with a number of seasonal events and more unlocks, but I can’t help but feel that maybe the game should have waited to ship with all that. There might be fun to be had here, but it’s hard to see it having any long legs.

It’s Brute vs. Brute vs. Brute vs. Brute

One of the more exciting aspects of Hoods has to be the very unique hero classes it has to offer. In total, there are four classes ranging from stealth, brute force, range, and of course the one geared as a healer.

Playing each of them, I was pleasantly surprised by how well they differed from one another. Example, the Brawler (brute) has immense strength, so much that they’re capable of lifting up gates to allow players to easily travel through the maps. They’re extremely strong, and it shows even in their attack as you can easily take someone down in just a few swings.

However, because of their brute strength, they make easy preys for Hunters (stealth class) and Rangers since they’re slow moving. The idea with the balancing is rock, paper, scissor, between one class has a advantage over another. In theory, it should be “balanced”, but in reality, it isn’t. This is mostly due to the fact that there is no hero/class locking, allowing anyone to play as any class they like. This means that you could have the same class used by multiple teammates.

It didn’t take very long to see what the meta was becoming, which happened to be a full team of brawlers. This in turned worsen Heists as the intended flow felt ruined. Players were no longer playing strategically, or using stealth since a full team of Brawlers could easily dispatch NPCs and players.

After a while it got frustrating that I couldn’t just sneak around the initial phases anymore as NPCs were constantly put on high alert. I would soon learn why as four burly men would rush up and beat me to death. It got to the point where it just wasn’t fun anymore.

No Robin in This Hood

For what it’s worth, I really like the idea of Hood: Outlaws & Legends. From a combat standpoint, I think it plays great to the point where I’m having a ton of fun just going around and killing things. But sadly this is where most of my praise ends, as while I think Heists is a really creative mode, the unbalancing ruins it. Add to the fact that it’s the only mode to play across the six  maps, then you got yourself a very repetitive game. This is only after a short few hours, which never bodes well for any online multiplayer. Hood: Outlaw and Legends is a great idea on paper, but not one so well executed.

SCORE: 6.5/10

Pros:

  • Each class feels unique with very fun gameplay.
  • The Heist game mode is very well thought out, and fun when everything comes together.

Cons:

  • Balance issues, especially since there is no hero locking.
  • Only one game mode that gets repetitive. This is a very tough buy, even with the $30 price tag.
  • The hub feels like a wasted space.

Hi-Rez Studios has released the SMITE update 11.79 May 21 patch for the game, and this is just days after we got the Monstercat title update. Note that this is not the Bonus Update scheduled for June 1, so don’t expect any major balance changes included.

SMITE Update 11.79 May 21 Patch Notes:

SMITE servers underwent maintenance which should be finished by the time you read this. While there are no patch notes available yet, we’re keeping an eye out in community and will update the post if we see anything tangible.

We’ve listed the most recent bug fixes released earlier this week:

BUG FIXES

UI

  • Fixed an issue where a large group of new gods had no in-game ability videos. All gods should now have all ability videos
  • Updated Loki and Persephone in-game ability videos to match their new kits
  • Fixed an issue where the Danzaburou and Hera fan art cosmetics were using the wrong art

Spectator Mode

  • Fixed an issue where certain pieces of foliage or plant life would flicker

General Gameplay

  • Adjusted a large list of gods to reduce the chance that they would get in a situation where their basic attacks would de-sync from the characters animation.
  • Fixed an issue where the Tutorial was still using Hunter’s Blessing
  • Fixed an issue where King Arthur and Yemoja were not properly banned from all infinite cooldown/mana modes
  • Fixed a series of issues on the Conquest Map regarding the Base Gates
    • Base Gates should now function like player-made walls when interacting with abilities that care about walls. Ricochets should bounce off them, Chernobog can dash into them, and Janus can NOT portal through them.

Once we know of the latest patch notes, we’ll update the post.

Knockout City Won’t Require Nintendo Online Pass, Even After the Free Trial

Some good news for Nintendo Switch gamers who plan on jumping into Knockout City today, as the studio has confirmed that there won’t be any need for a Nintendo Online Pass, even after the free trial is over.

In a recent EA review event that we took part in for Knockout City, developers Velan Studio took to clarify some questions that invitees had. One of them was concerning whether or not Knockout City would require a Nintendo Online Pass subscription, seeing that the game isn’t free-to-play. The answer? No.

Will you need Nintendo Switch Online even after the block party, after the 10-day free trail is over?

Studio General Manager, David Nathanielsz: The answer is no. Right now there is no need for Nintendo Switch Online subscription during the block party, or after the block party.

Despite the Switch version not requiring a subscription to Nintendo Online Pass, both the PlayStation and Xbox will require PS+ and Gold respectively once the free trial period is over. Of course those who plan on getting Knockout City through the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, you won’t have to worry about having a Gold subscription separately as it’s included as part of the subscription.

Knockout City is now available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Next-gen consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series) will be able to play the game via backwards compatibility. In the same review event, Velan Studios confirmed that they will add features to next-gen platforms “down the road.”

Knockout City Will Add Features for Next-Gen Platforms Down the Road

Velan Studio has confirmed that Knockout City will run native 4K at go frames-per-second (fps) on the PS5 and Xbox Series, though through boosted backwards compatibility, as the game does not have next-gen specific features. This could however change down the road.

In a recent EA review event that we took part in for Knockout City, developer Velan Studio took to a short Q&A session. In it, they were asked whether or not there would be any upgrades specifically for the PS5 and Xbox Series console. Here’s what they had to say.

Are there any upgrades or graphic advantages for players on the PS5 or Xbox Series X?

Karthik Bala, CEO of Velan Studios: So we currently at launch support the PS5 and Xbox Series through backwards compatibilities, and as part of that players on these new consoles will get a boost where they get native 4K at 60FPS and it’s butter smooth, it looks beautiful on the new platforms. As we said, across all platforms it’s pretty evenly balanced in terms of play no matter the input device or console. Even on Switch we have 60FPS at Switch resolutions. So we’re excited about next-gen consoles and to continue to evolve and add features to the game on those platforms down the road.

A bit of a bummer, but of course that should come as no surprise considering the game has not been officially announced for those platforms outside of backwards compatibility. Still, 60fps should suffice and judging from our play session Knockout City holds that frame-rate very well. It in all honesty is kind of hard to picture exactly what next-gen consoles can do for the game here. Although, PS5 Dualsense controller support might a very cool feature to add later.

Knockout City is now available on the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It is also playable on the PS5 and Xbox Series via backwards compatibility. Stay tuned to our review hitting the site soon.

No Man’s Sky Update 3.41 May 21 Treks Out (Update #3)

Update 3.41 for No Man’s Sky (NMS) has been released, following last week’s big Beachhead patch. Hello Games has released the No Man’s Sky update 3.41 May 21 patch, that should be for fixes that surfaced from the previous title update.

Note that this patch is out on last-gen and current-gen platforms, and clocks in at a hefty 3.6GB on PlayStation.

No Man’s Sky Update 3.41 Patch Notes:

Update #3: Hello Games has released the official patch notes, and mentioned that more surprises are coming “very soon.”

  • Added the ability to dismiss a frigate from your freighter fleet via the Fleet Management terminal.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented Expedition rewards from being redeemed by players who had already earned parts of the reward from the Quicksilver shop.
  • Players starting the Beachhead expedition will now begin with warp fuel available.
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent Nada, Polo and other Space Anomaly inhabitants from offering the correct dialog options if spoken to in abandoned systems.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the Atlas Fireworks to have no audio.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the fleets tutorial from advancing if players skipped the initial conversations with the navigator and immediately built a Fleet Terminal.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the Historiographical Dosimeter from being redeemed from the expedition rewards section of the Quicksilver shop.

Update #2: It looks like Hello Games added a surprise reward in the form of the Normanday ship from Mass Effect in this patch! Here are the details from the press release.

A surprise to the community, this Easter Egg moment is the reward for players that complete a mysterious expedition that appeared in the game during the past week. Players have until May 31 to undertake the expedition, to permanently add the Normandy SR-1 to their fleet.

As expected, Hello Games has not released the official patch notes just yet, though that should change in a few hours, and the Experimental build notes have not been updated too.

Reddit user Zig_Justice mentioned that this latest update fixes the Expeditions rewards issue!

Here are some of the known changes and issues straight from the community:

Reddit user Shadow_of_Fox said the following:

Looking at data files with missing content for end of expedition we expected a small patch adding that content around weekend, and here it is as community research is nearing completion

Once Hello Games releases the official changelog, we’ll update the post.
