PS4 Update 5.05 Is Live, Helps “Improve System Performance”

A new PS4 update has been rolled out. It’s 375 MB in size, and has only one purpose, if the patch notes are to be believed. PS4 Update 5.05 “improves system performance.” Yep, that’s all it does!

Check out the patch notes below:

About PlayStation 4 system software version 5.05

Main features in version 5.05 update:

  • This system software update improves system performance.

It’s only a minor update that’s landed on the Sony system today. However, we shouldn’t have to wait too long for the next significant patch, as 5.50 beta sign-ups have already begun. You can bet that Update 5.50 will contain a lot more features than just “performance improvements.”

What do you want to see in the next big update? Let us know.

I’d love to see native 1440p monitor support come to the PS4 Pro. I currently have to deal with games running at native 1440p, upscaled to 4K, downsampled to 1080p, then upscaled to my monitor. It’s as crazy as it sounds!

In other PlayStation news, beta sign-ups for PS4 Update 5.50 have begun, Hori is designing a new Xbox-inspired PS4 controller, and the Official PlayStation Blog has named its Game of the Year 2017 winners.

Gaming Industry Revenue Expected to Hit $235 Billion by 2022 Says Research Firm

According to research done by Digi-Capital, revenue for the gaming industry is set to reach a bank-breaking $235bn by 2020, an amount, as pointed out by Gameindustrybiz, to be higher than the current GDP (gross domestic product) in 150 countries.

As detailed in Digi-Capital’s Games Report Q1 2018, mobile games, PC games, and PC hardware will take just under three-quarters of all market revenue.

An interesting observation made by the firm is that physical sales of console games will still produce an incredible amount of revenue despite the decline of physical sales and the rise of digital purchases for games.

Asia is also expected to continue its growth as the largest regional market for video games, beating out North America and Western Europe combined.

This growth has seen an insane amount of money invested in game companies and their startups, with “well over $2 billion” being put into the games.

There’s a lot more to the report that we didn’t highlight here, and if you’re interested in viewing the rest of the forecasts and data, you can head to the Digi-Capital site here to read it all.

New UK Developer Wushu Studios Has Driveclub and Motorstorm Alumni at the Helm

A new UK developer has sprung up in Liverpool by the name of Wushu Studios, who have announced that they’ll be working on creating games “with interesting mechanics, unique concepts and to deliver fun, refreshing gameplay experiences to players.”

Lead by Alan McDermott, Nigel Kershaw, and Stuart Trevor, all former developers at Evolution Studios who created the racing-darlings Motorstorm and Driveclub, the team is looking into creating a new IP within the sci-fi genre.

While the new IP has yet to be sufficiently detailed, we know that the game is being developed in Epic‘s Unreal Engine 4, and the prototype for the game has been in development since August of 2017.

As of now, Wushu Studios is a small team of 11 people that not only includes the Driveclub and Motorstorm alumni but also well-known industry folks such as former BioWare senior concept artist Alex Figni and tipster turned PR Manager Nate ‘Shinobi602’ Najda.

This Titanfall 2 Mod Is Both Awesome and Highly Inefficient

There’s a lot of video game mods out there that either add more maps, weapons, or just give the game something the developers can’t or haven’t thought of. Well, this Titanfall 2 mod falls exactly in that category.

If you ever wanted to do an actual punch in order for your Pilot to melee in Titanfall 2, then your wishes have been granted! Check out this video of Reddit user Lycanther-AI where he does an actual jab in order to initiate a melee attack in the game. It’s both impressive and funny at the same time.

The least efficient way to melee
byu/Lycanther-AI intitanfall

This is one of those “why would you ever want to do that?” sort of thing, but it’s there. Someone made a Titanfall 2 mod just for this and I have no idea why. It’s a cool experiment though.

Speaking of Titanfall 2 mods, here’s a more grounded one wherein someone is creating a custom Gauntlet maker.

Call of Duty: WWII Glitched All Black Camo Type Being Considered to Be Added

Call of Duty: WWII has its fair share of weapon camos that can be earned by completing various objectives. However, there is one weapon camo that seems to have made its way into the game accidentally that has an intended side effect.

For those playing the game, there’s a neat little glitch that makes your weapon covered in blood and it looks fantastic! Don’t believe me? Check out the image above (courtesy of Reddit user vikkxd). It’s being called the “all-black” camo, and people are clamoring for it to be an official weapon camo in COD: WWII!

Thankfully, Sledgehammer Games made a resolution to listen to the community, and have confirmed that they are discussing it internally about including it in!

Thanks for posting! We are looking into the issue that is causing this to occur. But since we’ve seen quite a few posts now in favor of this look, we are also discussing with teams internally about an all-black camo.

For now, the only way to get this bloods soaked weapon “camo” is by using assault rifles, and bayonet charging enemies. Once you die, it’ll be back to its usual, clean self, though.

In other Call of Duty: WWII news, health regen has been confirmed to be getting a buff! There’s also a weapon tuning update set to drop tomorrow.

New Shooter Based on Alien Franchise Is Being Made by Fox

Do you remember Aliens: Colonial Marines? Yeah, I don’t blame you if you managed to scrub that out of your memories entirely. Well, there’s a chance for redemption this time around as Fox is once again working on a new shooter based on the Alien IP!

Currently in development at FoxNext Games, the video game division of Fox formed in 2017, the unnamed Alien game is set for release on both consoles and PC. Helping FoxNext is Cold Iron Studios, which the company just acquired. Cold Iron Studios is made up of former Cryptic Studios (Neverwinter, City of Heroes) people, which include CEO Craig Zinkievich, Chief Technology Officer Shannon Posniewski, and Creative Director Matt Highison.

President of FoxNext Games Aaron Loeb had this to say about the acquisition:

Cold Iron Studios has amazing design, craftsmanship and development talent that we are excited to welcome at FoxNext Games as we pursue our goal to build a multi-platform, multi-genre portfolio of great games. I am a personal fan of Cold Iron’s previous work and all of us at FoxNext Games are thrilled to be working with them as they create an action-packed persistent world, steeped in the mysteries of this beloved Alien universe.

No further details about the new game based on Aliens has been shared, but given how bad Aliens: Colonial Marines was, there’s nowhere to go but up, right?

Metal Gear Survive Microtransactions Confirmed, Game Will Require Constant Internet Connection

With the Metal Gear Survive beta set to kick off tomorrow, more info about the game is coming to light, and not all of ’em are good.

During a preview session, GameSpot has learned that the game will require a constant internet connection for people to play it, and that applies even for the single-player portion too. According to Konami, this is the case so the game can offer a “seamless” experience as players transition from single-player to multiplayer.

Metal Gear Survive’s online connectivity requirements were built to support a seamless integration between single player and co-op. This will also enable us to provide ongoing content post-launch.

Another bit that has been confirmed, is that Metal Gear Survive microtransactions will be a thing! The game will have an in-game store where players can purchase virtual currency using real-world money. You can check out the list of items you can buy in the image below.

Important to note that this isn’t the first Metal Gear game to include microtransactions, as The Phantom Pain also had microtransactions as well.

Metal Gear Survive will be out this March 2018 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Call of Duty: WWII Health Regen Will Be Tweaked, No ETA on Exact Change

Good news, Call of Duty: WWII fans! One of the community’s most requested changes will be implemented by Sledgehammer Games. In case the headline wasn’t a dead giveaway, it’s the health regen that will be tweaked.

Over on Reddit, Sledgehammer Games boss Michael Condrey shared that the studio agrees that a health regen buff is needed in COD: WWII based on their data.

Multiplayer Health Regen, WWII
byu/Mcondrey inWWII

We’re digging in with the MP systems design team on this today.

At launch, we were really trying to make players feel like ordinary and vulnerable soldiers fighting in the brutal conditions of WWII in the 40s.

We have seen interesting match data and fan feedback alignment on the regen time needing to be tuned faster. How much faster is still being discussed. Exactly when we’ll align and be confident in releasing any changes is also TBD.

We’ve heard you though. And we don’t disagree that a change may be warranted. Will keep you posted via our SHG channels as we get closer to a formal decision.

Best, – Condrey

Unfortunately, the studio hasn’t decided yet how fast the the health regen should kick in just yet, nor is there a specific time frame on when this tweak will be rolled out. Hopefully, it’ll be part of the game update planned for later this month.

In other Call of Duty: WWII news, don’t forget, a new weapon tuning update should be available tomorrow.

Dragon Ball FighterZ Combo System – Here’s All You Need to Know About It

While the Dragon Ball FighterZ  beta was plagued with issues, such as extremely long waits for matchmaking, or the game simply not letting you get past the title screen. Arc System Works does have something special in the latest Dragon Ball game, which people would know if they actually managed to get into an actual match.

Unfortunately, I myself couldn’t participate too much in the open beta that was going on this past weekend due to the issues stated above. But for those who did manage to sneak into the game, or play against other people found some interesting mechanics to the game.

Arc System Works has implemented game mechanics such as an “auto-combo” and “manual-combo” feature that’s similar to Killer Instinct; where if you string combos from light attack all the way to heavy attack the game will automatically do a combo for you. However, this method isn’t efficient if you want to maximize your damage. To explain why that’s the case, you can watch this rather short video below from YouTuber “Sean Wonder” going over this feature, as well as the difference between both auto combos and manual combos.

Overall, this feature is pretty neat. as it helps those who are new to fighting games and rewards those who loves to put in some time to them.

In recent Dragon Ball FighterZ news, Bandai Namco tends to have yet another open beta before the game’s launch date of January 26. You can check out the details of it here.

Unity 2018 Demo Showcases Engine Improvements, Looks Incredible

2018 is going to be another big year for graphical upgrades in gaming. Each year, we see better-looking titles that really push the envelope. With that in mind, feast your eyes on the new Unity 2018 demo below. It looks pretty damn incredible!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cvi4TVkUdU

Unity’s award-winning Demo Team, creators of “Adam”, is excited to announce Book of the Dead, a first-person interactive demo showcasing the capabilities of Unity 2018 for powering high-end visuals for game productions.

A powerful new rendering pipeline

Book of the Dead demonstrates what is possible when using Unity 2018’s new Scriptable Render Pipeline, which provides enhanced customizability of Unity’s rendering architecture, putting more control in the hands of the developers.

The project is built on the new High-Definition Render Pipeline template shipping with Unity 2018 and various powerful customizations enabled by the SRP. A preview of the High-Definition Render Pipeline is coming soon to 2018.1 public beta.

Real-world environment assets

All of the natural environment assets in the demo are photogrammetry-scanned real-world objects and textures. The majority of them come from Quixel Megascans, a publicly available library of high-quality scanned assets, which is used widely by high-end game production and film VFX professionals alike.

For creating its own photogrammetry assets, the Demo team used the experimental Delighting Tool developed by Unity Labs in its workflow.

An interactive cinematic experience

Book of the Dead is an interactive demo that combines elements from both film and games. The trailer is representative of the actual gameplay experience.

The environments are built in a way that allows the player to move around and explore. The camera is a continuous first-person camera, and when the player is teleported to a different location, the transition feels like a cinematic cut.

Unlike a traditional first-person game camera, however, here the game camera is designed to have a cinematic handheld feel, with inertia and weight. The height, speed, and shakiness reflect the emotional state of the protagonist and change as the player progresses through the story controlling the character.

Pushing the envelope

Unity’s Demo productions drive advanced use of the Unity engine through autonomous creative projects. The team consists of experienced game professionals led by Creative Director Veselin Efremov, who writes and directs the demos and is responsible for their final look.

Focusing on graphics, the team explores and pushes the limits of what is possible to achieve with the Unity engine. The unique position of an internal team is that it is willing and able to take the risk — and pain — of basing entire productions at the bleeding edge of technological innovation.

Looks pretty amazing, right? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Destiny 2 Now Throttles Lost Sector Rewards, Prevents Faction Rally Token Exploits

A common tactic employed by the more committed Destiny 2 Faction Rally enthusiasts, was to repeatedly enter and exit a Lost Sector, quickly opening chests and earning loot. While certainly monotonous, it got the job done, and was a great way of quickly racking up Faction rewards.

Unfortunately, for those hoping to use the same exploit for the latest Faction Rally, Bungie has now put a throttle on the number of Faction Tokens that can be earned through completing Lost Sectors.

Here’s the official details:

UPDATE: Lost Sector Rewards

We’re aware of player reports about Lost Sectors not granting rewards. There was a throttle added to address an issue in the previous Faction Rallies where players were earning 500 Tokens per hour.

The patchnote concerning this change has been updated to correctly state that all Lost Sector chests are subject to this throttle.

Right now if a player opens more than 2 Chests in a 10 minute period they will not receive additional rewards from Lost Sector chests for 10 minutes. This does not prevent players from completing milestones related to Lost Sector chests.

It looks like the Destiny community will have to find another way to efficiently grind for these tokens…

In other Destiny 2 news, this fan comic pokes fun at Tess Everis’ exploitative nature, the game’s development was apparently rebooted in early 2016, and Bungie has revealed the dates for the next Faction Rally and Iron Banner.

Battlefront 2 Update Undocumented Changes, Here’s What DICE Didn’t Tell You

Yesterday, Star Wars Battlefront II received a big update, addressing many of the issues players had been complaining about. Developer DICE shared many details of the patch in a blog post. However, it looks like some changes were missing from that list.

Over on Reddit, user Tactical_Turtle12 has worked with the community to compile a record of undocumented changes. These range from reduced level requirements, to tweaked Star Cards.

Here’s what the community has found so far:

  • Requirements for purple level has been decreased: Troopers: Level 25 (instead of 50)
  • Heroes: Level 20 (instead of 25)
  • Milestone for weapons in each class are now 50/200/400
  • Milestone for weapons’ mods have been decreased to 25/75/150
  • New option to disable HUD but keep the scopes
  • When reinforcements become available, it’ll state which type. For example: AERIAL AVAILABLE, BOMBER AVAILABLE
  • Yoda can no longer block flame throwers
  • Press A or X to claim loot in career tab now. No more pressing Y or /_\
  • They fixed a bunch of Hero victory poses in the top 5 screen.
  • Phasma’s blaster sounds different
  • New music was added to the game
  • It seems that the AAT was nerfed aswell. The splash damage seems to be lower than it was before the patch. It also seems that playing the objective on GA gives more BP.
  • There is now a bunker buster in the Resurgent Class Star Destroyer map on SF Assault. I had to do a double take.
  • ARC-170 laser cannons now make the same sound as TIE Fighter cannons.
  • Leia’s Card Relentless Firing changed. Now it is increased firing time (time reduction per bullet decreased) at 25%/25%/45%/55%
  • New hero voicelines were added to some abilities to indicate the activation
  • S-5 Laser color was corrected to Green
  • Many reinforcements got their price reduced, some are the same price, some are just lower
  • Defender card for Heavy doesn’t work anymore in Vehicles
  • Destroy a turret in starfighter does not longer give a kill in the scoreboard
  • The Super Battledroid had an animation issue in regards to sprinting and reloading (his arm would go behind his back), is now fixed
  • Battle points gain from Starfighter kills (AI and Players) has been reduced (not 100% on this, might need another person to confirm)
  • Environmental Kills not count as a kill and not as an assist
  • The icon of the ion turret shows a little mark when it’s acquiring targets

That’s a quite a few changes that weren’t documented!

What do you make of Star Wars Battlefront II update 1.1? Happy with the improvements? Let us know.

In other Battlefront II news, the original (2005) version got a new patch, Pink Darth Vader has entered the battle, and developer DICE holds four games of the Top 20 PSN downloads for 2017.
