Yakuza Creator Toshihiro Nagoshi Launches Nagoshi Studio Under NetEase Games

One of Sega’s most prominent figures has created his own studio following his departure from the company. Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi has launched Nagoshi Studio, which is under NetEase Games and will be overseen by the Japanese video game director and designer personally.

Composed of 8 former members of Sega’s Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Nagoshi and his team made the announcement via NetEase, with the new studio focused on developing new properties and games under their own banner.

In a Famitsu interview conducted with the CEO himself, Nagoshi stated that he and his partners left Sega because they didn’t want to keep doing the same thing over and over again. This allows his creative juices to flow as he’ll once again oversee game development personally, and that there are less constraints in NetEase as compared to his time in Sega. For their first project, he teased that the team will focus on developing something that will appeal to a broader audience, is larger in scale, and is something that they haven’t done before.

While Nagoshi and the former members from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have moved on from the Yakuza games, Sega is still actively working on future Yakuza titles as teased by Lost Judgement director Kazuki Hosokawa which you can read about here.

Thanks Nibel!

Resident Evil 7 Revived the World of Survival Horror Five Years Ago

One of the most ambitious sequels ever made helped restore the honor of a seemingly dying franchise, and I’m, of course, referring to Capcom’s Resident Evil 7. The seventh major entry in Capcom’s storied horror series  revived the world of survival horror five years ago, and not a day goes by that many fans of the franchise were grateful for that sequel’s existence.

Released in January 24, 2017, RE7 was a fresh entry into the long-running Resident Evil franchise that needed some course correction following the release of several entries that placed more emphasis on action rather than survival horror. After the mixed reviews and criticism following the release of Resident Evil 6, Capcom decided to go back to their roots and deliver a game that was all about immersing players in a horror setting, where you had to think on your feet, solve puzzles, and conserve ammo because danger was at lurking at every corner and there was no guarantee of getting out alive on the first try.

Taking inspiration from Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead movie franchise, and presented in a similar fashion to Konami’s ill-fated PT game demo, RE7 is played entirely in a first-person perspective and is primarily set in a derelict plantation located in Dulvey, Louisiana where mysterious virus has leaked and turned its victims in molded monstrosities and creatures. Players take control of Ethan Winters — a man who is desperately searching for his missing wife Mia after she goes missing for a couple of years. Entering a mysterious house and finding his wife locked in a basement, Ethan soon discovers that things are not what they seem as he is violently attacked by a possessed Mia and subsequently captured by the residents of the house known as the Baker family.

First teased as a VR demo called KI7CHEN, RE7 would get its full reveal on E3 2016 and would get several demos released that would serve as prequels that were set years before the main game and featured characters who were victims of the Baker family. The game holds the distinction of being the very first game to use Capcom’s new proprietary RE Engine — an in house developed video game engine that began as soon as work started on the project back in 2014. The new engine allowed for higher framerates, smoother animation, better lighting, and realistic graphics that pushed the boundaries of the game — leading to it being used in several other Capcom games such as Devil May Cry 5, Monster Hunter World, the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes, and even a direct sequel in Resident Evil Village.

To say that Resident Evil 7 was a huge success would be an understatement — it single-handedly brought the franchise back to prominence and helped Capcom deliver one of the most impressive games ever made for PC and the eighth generation of consoles that it was released in. The game would also bring back fan favorite character Chris Redfield and connect it to the larger RE universe, with the story continuing in RE Village which once again had Ethan Winters as the main protagonist. If there were any Resident Evil games you needed to play to get you into the world of survival horror, this and Resident Evil Village would be good places to start — and you can check out our review for that equally impressive sequel here.

Watch Dogs Legion TU5.6 was “Final Update,” Dev Team Issues Letter to Community

Those looking for new content in Watch Dogs Legion, sadly, that doesn’t seem to be coming anytime soon other than returning reward tracks in Online Mode, as Ubisoft has confirmed that the Watch Dogs Legion 5.6 Title Update, which was released back in September 2021, was the last major patch for the game.

The Watch Dogs Legion dev team issued a letter to the community thanking them for their support, and outlining the content and other stuff released throughout the game’s lifecycle.

In October 2020, Watch Dogs: Legion launched, and you joined us in London to stop the authoritarian powers that were threatening the city. The launch of the Online Mode continued your adventure with DedSec London, giving you the opportunity to stop new threats in the Tactical Ops, or to test your mettle against friends in the Spiderbot PVP arena.

Since then, we’ve expanded the world of Watch Dogs: Legion through a ton of new content in both single player and online.

We introduced a range of gameplay mode; from fan favourites such as Invasion, to Resistance Mode and a re-imagining of London as a zombie apocalypse with Watch Dogs: Legion of the Dead.

Additionally, new characters joined the game, like Mina Sidhu, an escaped research subject with mind control abilities, Helen, a retiree with strawberry sweets and a taser in her purse, ready to use either to melt hearts, and Darcy, an Assassin with a strong connection to the London Brotherhood.

This summer also saw the return of an older Aiden Pearce and Wrench in the story expansion Watch Dogs: Legion — Bloodline. Set shortly before the events of the main game, the expansion follows them both as they work together to prevent a rising authoritarian threat from a corporate giant, whilst dealing with their own personal motivations, and face old wounds. Continuing their stories, developing Aiden’s relationship with his nephew Jackson, and digging deeper into Wrench’s motivations was something we were very excited about bringing to the world of Legion, and we’ve loved seeing the positive reactions from fans.

Finally, thanks to your feedback, we added multiple quality-of-life improvements to the game.

Throughout it all, you’ve shown us your DedSec teams, favourite recruits, best game moments, fan art, cosplay, videos, and more, and we’ve loved seeing your content and passion.

TU 5.6 was our final update for Watch Dogs: Legion. However, you can look forward to reward tracks in the Online Mode, containing both new and returning rewards. The current season 4 Rebels track, containing 80 ranks, will run until January 22, 2022, followed by Season 5 Stripes. After that, Seasons 3-5 will continue to cycle and return to the game, giving you the opportunity to acquire rewards you might have missed out on in the past. Some rewards to look forward to is a modified version of Aiden Pearce’s jacket, and Jackson’s mask and clothing set.

The game has grown by leaps and bounds, with a ton of content to explore, from a sprawling near future city to an action-packed Online Mode. We couldn’t be prouder of the game we’ve created, and we appreciate all of you who’ve joined us on this journey in London over the year. We look forward to seeing more of your adventures in Legion!

Until next time, DedSec.

//The Watch Dogs: Legion Development team

Hopefully, if there are any bugs, the dev team will still act on it even after this letter. No mention on whether the dev team is moving on to a new Watch Dogs, though that seems highly likely.

Battlefield 2042 Portal Dev Looking to Add All-Out War as Featured Experience; XP Progression Focus Mentioned

Those looking for more maps in Battlefield 2042 to play in, we feel your pain. While the game does have Battlefield Portal to add to its longevity, couldn’t DICE just add the BF Portal maps in All-Out Warfare? This questions, which I’m guessing other people have thought of too, has been asked to Ripple Effect Studios — the studio behind Battlefield Portal.

Over on Twitter, Senior Game Director at Ripple Effect Justin Wiebe answered a fan’s request of adding all the BF Portal maps to AoW (All-Out Warfare).

In another Twitter conversation, Wiebe admits that the recently pulled Zombie mode needs to go back to the drawing board, and stresses that core XP progression should be the studio’s focus now.

While I’d love to see the classic Battlefield maps found in BF Portal to be added to the base game, I highly doubt that’s happening given the maps weren’t built with Specialists in mind. Ripple Effect adding it as a Featured Experience might work, though it might need some tweaks since, which would explain why this isn’t just something the devs can flick on and off.

Dying Light Spike’s Story: Last Call Trailer Brings a New Event to the Game

It looks like things are not quite done yet in Harran. Techland has unveiled the Dying Light Spike’s Story: Last Call trailer which brings a new event to the game, one that sounds the call for all survivors to take arms and rescue any other remaining survivors before it’s too late.

Here’s the trailer for the new event that encourages players to drop all hostilities and work together.

For those wanting a refresher on the story, Rais has fallen yet the bandits are still flooding Harran and ravaging at whatever stands in their way. Striking at a survivor’s shelter, the Virals and infection have caused untold amounts of chaos and destruction. It’s here where Spike has sounded the call, and the situation for Dying Light Spike’s Story is explained via the game’s Steam page.

Spike’s organizing a safe zone for the survivors who managed to escape. There are still many who need help getting there, though, and it will take some real grit and extraordinary skill to brave the storm and bring them to safety. You are their only hope now.

Camden wanted to equip them with his special suits, but unfortunately, only some of them managed to get them. As few as they are, they might prove really useful, so keep your eyes peeled! Oh, and as for the zombie situation—think Spike already has an idea on how to deal with it. Just follow his instructions, and we might stand a chance.

While players may still support Dying Light and its events, Dying Light 2 is about to hit this February and here’s the list of trophies and achievements you can get for the game.

Elden Ring Time to Beat Clocks in at 30 Hours for the Main Story

For those looking to find out just how much time they will need to grind for FromSoftware’s latest title, the studio has revealed in their latest presentation at Taipei Game Show 2022 that Elden Ring time to beat clocks in at 30 hours! However, these numbers are purely for the main story, and it’s expected that players will spend more as they search for every nook and cranny of the game.

Announced by FromSoftware’s Yasuhiro Kitao via the game’s presentation, it appears that players will need roughly 30 hours time to beat the Elden Ring main route. While former Souls titles have been quite beefy when it comes to side content, it still remains to be seen just how much there is in terms of side stuff for Elden Ring when it comes to completion.

In case you missed it, Elden Ring has also been announced as going gold in the same presentation, and you can check out more details on it here.

Elden Ring is releasing on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 on February 25.

Can Battlefield 2042 Be Saved by Going Free-to-Play?

It’s no secret by now that Battlefield 2042 hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype. Not only in the eyes of Battlefield vets, but even for casual shooter fans, too. It’s gotten so bad that on PC, Battlefield games that are years old are beating the game in terms of player count, which is something that should raise red flags for both EA and DICE.

While taking out Specialists would mean a massive core gameplay re-adjustment that might not be feasible at this point, there is another route EA can take for the game, and that’s Battlefield 2042 going free-to-play (F2P). Rumors regarding this move has already circulated online, and while I have no evidence at all regarding this, I have a strong hunch that BF2042’s Hazard Zone mode was the intended F2P cog in the entire machine. Unfortunately, the mode crashed and burned, that I fail to see it catching on even if it goes free-to-play. But, if EA can angle Battlefield 2042 right (and with enough gameplay tweaks from DICE), Battlefield 2042 going the F2P route might just reinvigorate the game — and in turn, the franchise.

The Price Tag Isn’t the Problem

However, the shooter going free-to-play won’t solve the issue at all.

First and foremost, the main issue with Battlefield 2042 isn’t related to the price tag. The game could have launched as a free game, and would still get the criticism it’s receiving now. However, with the player base dwindling every passing day, even if DICE was to put in all their effort and manage to turn it all around, who will be really left to play? Sure, they’ll have some players return, but it will never hit the full numbers they were probably aiming for.

So, the suggestion of Battlefield 2042 going F2P isn’t entirely a bad one as it would allow the company to draw in more players. However, it shouldn’t go F2P as a response to all the negativity that is out there right now, because that’s not going to help it with anything. F2P is often seen as a studio’s last ditch effort to save a game; a sign of troubling times to many when the game in question isn’t popular, or suffering major losses. A bad game isn’t suddenly good just because it’s free, and EA needs to focus on that.

Fix the game, and then when it’s in an acceptable/favorable state, that’s when EA should think of considering releasing BF2042 as a free-to-play game. Bear in mind, gamers these days are spoiled with excellent F2P game choices (Apex Legends, Warzone, Fortnite, Warframe, Destiny, and more), and EA needs to do something special in order to rope in players, and for the community to not abandon it (given most of them paid full price for a game that’s going F2P, most won’t be happy about it).

So, let’s say EA and DICE did release Battlefield 2042 for free sometime this year. Would it work? I honestly cannot say. On one hand, you’ll have a bunch of pissed off gamers who bought the game (regardless if it’s full price or not), and on the other, you’re opening up the game to a massive player base who are eager to try anything bombastic and new for free. It could work, but it could also potentially damage the Battlefield franchise .

An Alternative and Why Go F2P at All…

Aside from going F2P, another route EA can take is pushing Battlefield 2042 as a “freebie” game for PlayStation Plus, and/or Xbox Live Games With Gold or Xbox’s Game Pass. Again, you’re opening the game up to a massive player base, and will be giving away the game for “free” for just 30 days. Of course, the pissed off buyers will still have something to say, but at that point, would EA even care? I gather not that much since the publisher would be more interested in snagging a sizeable chunk of new players to give it a go.

Another alternative is delivering just one mode as a F2P component, and that’s Battlefield Portal. The Battlefield community has spoken and Specialists are out, and most (including this guy) wants traditional classes in. With how BF2042’s structured, taking the Specialists out and adjusting everything in the game to cater to just a four-class system is too huge a task for DICE to do. Hell, if they’re doing that, why not just release an all-new Battlefield game altogether, right?

But if EA pushes Battlefield Portal as a F2P mode of sorts, they can sell more skins (given the different Battlefield games Portal houses), and they can also (kind of) defend themselves from paying customers by re-affirming that only one part of Battlefield 2042 is free.

So the question is: why go F2P at all? Yeah, the answer is super simple: microtransactions. Whatever development budget the publisher has blown on the game can be recouped if it goes F2P, and manages to attract a large player base. Usually, these same players — given they got the game for free — are more open to spending on cosmetics and other bundles in the in-game store. This will be EA’s primary motivator for even considering going the F2P route.

Will You Welcome BF2042 F2P?

For those in the community who are hesitant to buy BF2042 or even test it out based on the feedback it’s gotten so far, chances are these people would be willing to try the game if it’s for free. But what about those who paid premium price for it though? Perhaps EA can give them a special Player Card, character skin or token of apprecation (giving a full-scale refund is out of the question) that will soften the blow. Heck, if PUBG can do it, surely a bigger and more seasoned franchise can too, right?

Battlefield 2042 Cheat Provider

If BF2042 F2P happens, will members of the community trust DICE and EA ever again? Or will they see the franchise as a purely F2P brand moving onwards? We can’t say for sure. However, given the game’s state these days, we might be seeing it sooner rather than later.

Would you want Battlefield 2042 to go free-to-play? And will it attract a sizeable chunk of online shooter fans? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Taipei Game Show Second Year of Return to Live Event Met With Success, Robots Used to Combat Corona Virus

It seems that some normalcy is returning to the world of gaming — at least at this year’s Taipei Game Show, as it has returned for a second year of public events despite the on-going pandemic. To ensure the safety of all visitors, and partners, even organizers continue to enforce strict mask policy, as well as bringing in some actual robots to help with automictic disinfestations.

Among  some notable event highlights from titles such as Genshin Impact, PUBG, and recently their Indie Game Awards, The Taipei Game Show is seemingly off to a good start. While the event is a mix of both live and public, many had concerns that the event would be a breeding ground for the on-going COVID-19 an d all its new variants. While the full outcome is yet to be seen, it does go without saying that the planning committee behind the event have been doing all they can at preventing the spread, so much so that this year’s show has been greeted with a new attraction — that being the robots roaming the floor, disinfecting everything.

Unprecedentedly, the entrances to the show floor were guarded by spray disinfection robots, complementing the standard anti-pandemic procedures, followed by a full sweep of the entire exhibition hall by medical-grade UV disinfection robots after the show closed everyday.

On the first day of TGS, passionate visitors all followed the anti-pandemic procedures as they entered the exhibition hall in an orderly manner. The disinfection robots even became an attraction that many visitors took pictures with the robots as they waited in line to get admitted.

An image of Chairman of Taipei Computer Association Paul Peng can be found below, along with these disinfection robots.

I have to say, that’s pretty neat! Hopefully they’re effective in limiting the spread of COVID-19, and we can have more gaming conventions go back to physical shows like before.
