What Does DICE Need to Do to Win Back the Battlefield Community After Battlefield V?

Since it’s launch in November 2018, Battlefield V has gone from one controversy to another, which might or might not have contributed to the title not getting any new content earlier than expected. With a new Battlefield game confirmed to be in the works and dropping next year, we were wondering given the recent developments, what DICE needs to do in order to regain community trust once again.

Joining us in our conversations are Battlefield YouTubers, and someone who’s been entrenched with the Battlefield community over the years as a mod on not only the Battlefield V subreddit, but all the Battlefield-related subreddits — in short, the people we asked are those familiar with the franchise, and the community as a whole.

Note: Opinions shared have been edited for spell checking, grammar and punctuation, but aside from that, was left as is.

Don’t add Attrition, punishing for winning duels is bad. Bring the sandbox back, remove the physicality and animations. It’s not fun to be blown away because there’s an explosion nearby + it breaks vehicle gameplay if you can’t get in and out to repair. Also means that PTFO-ing tanking is more often suicide due to the combination of Attrition and not being able to hop out.

A standout function (probably brought by next gen power, like more people/better destruction) BF1 had the Behemotes, BF4 had Levolution, etc.

Announce the plans early and stick to it. No ”soon” memes.

Release stuff more often, dripfeeding sucks.

In short, DICE needs to be more direct and more open in their answers. If something is under discussion they can say “We’re discussing it, but it’s a long way off.” If the game won’t have private servers at launch (for example), then say so. Currently people feel like they are spending their money on a game out of hope and vague promises and inevitably feel disappointed if they don’t get what they perceived out of said promises. If they can move back to a ground of solid answers and clarity, I think that will help to rebuild trust. Further I think making sure that people know from the outset what they will get for free and what they will have to mtx for will help.

Flakfire Gaming (YouTube, Twitter)

So, first things first — I think they need to apologize. DICE and EA really didn’t do right by the community with Battlefield 5 and its live service. I’m sure there were good intentions, but promises were made and they under-delivered. I understand the reason behind the decision to end content for the game, but it’s entirely self-inflicted, stemming from the response to the game’s reveal and release in an unfinished state.

If DICE and EA want to win back the community and don’t want to correct the problems with Battlefield V, then it begins with Battlefield 6. They need to deliver a complete product — one that not only works, but has been through the requisite stages of development where ideas are refined and sorted. There needs to be a clear direction and game plan. It’s much easier to board a ship when you have confidence in the captain and know where it’s going.

I’d also really like to see some kind of bonus as a thank you to players who purchased Battlefield V. Whether that’s a special skin or a discount, those kinds of things show a fanbase that their connection to the franchise is valued. Many fans will be expecting this with the next iteration in the franchise.

Finally, an alpha/beta test for BF6 is a must. EA and DICE will be under a microscope for it, and they should be, given the performance of BFV. Now more than ever, players will use those opportunities to determine whether or not a product is ready.

There are probably a few other things that could be done, but I think an apology and admission that things weren’t done right, plus a commitment to do things better, would go a long way.

RSP/Community Games

I believe a majority of the decrease stems from EA/DICE moving away from RSP or Community Games, starting with BF1. I believe this was originally a thought by EA to take the revenue that third-party service providers were making and move that revenue into their own revenue stream. However, they didn’t provide anything even close to what tools the community created for BF3, BF4 with rcon (Procon). This in turn left the many micro-communities of Battlefield with no option to host their own games, run servers how their community wants, or run custom community events. Instead it forced them to play on official, standardized servers. From a match-making and consistency perspective, this is great. What’s not great is that it has effectively killed off Battlefield communities that make up the greater “Best Community in the World” (as DICE calls it). They lost their “homes.” The lack of RSP/CGs in BF1 caused multiple clans to lose their core Battlefield players. Those players just aimlessly go and join whatever server is up, and there now is no feeling of community. I saw the Battlefield clans of BF4, numbered in the 40-60’s, dwindle down to about 5-10 communities in BF1 and even less in BFV. These mico-communities are the CORE of the Battlefield player base. There were Community Games added to BF1 towards its EOL (end of life), but it was too little, too late. When BFV launched there was nothing.. If Battlefield wants to have “The Best Community in the World,” then it needs to give the micro-communities that make up the larger player base, the tools they require to keep their communities alive, to keep players coming into their games, and to keep people playing together, not apart.

Roadmaps/Future Direction

Another issue with the lackluster performance of BFV was simply not listening to their player base. When players heard BFV was going to be based on WW2, people were more excited than I’ve ever seen for a Battlefield release. Most wanted to simply see a BF1942, remastered. What we got were developers, managers, directors, all with different ideas on the direction of where it should go. This misalignment of ideas caused yet further fragmentation of the player base. The release video was ill-received, as it looked like BFV was going to be some alternate WW2 universe. When the player base spoke up against the direction, they attempted to pivot to a more realistic approach, yet still included what some believe were outrageous skins for the era and unknown battle locations. Communication was all over the place about where they were going, moving forward. Roadmaps were put out with things that never happened. Development teams, internally, weren’t communicating with Community Managers, causing incorrect information to be relayed to the players. This made the confusion of where the game was going, turn into frustration. At this point we saw a mass exodus of long tenured EA/DICE employees as other game development companies moved into Stockholm and offered new and exciting career adventures. On the outside, looking in, it appeared as if there was an absolute disarray of the development teams internally. I believe the major reason the game ended early was due to this. As a developer myself, it takes at least 6-12 months (at least) to truly train a new developer in on a project. I believe there is no way they could recover from the loss of their senior development leadership. DICE needs to frequently post their near/far future plans with solid roadmaps that stick, in the next release. This leads us to the next issue.

Lack of Content

The initial content that came out for BFV was well received. The game was fun, the maps were fun (albeit missing a lot of the feeling of immersion that BF1 had), people enjoyed it. However, the content was drip fed. This was their first attempt at a “Live Service” for Battlefield. What many of the players thought Live Service would mean, would be constant small updates (1-2 a month), quick turnarounds for major and minor bug fixes, and consistent content. Instead, what it appeared, was a way for EA/DICE to buy themselves more time to train new employees, and attempt to turn the game around. I dont think they ever recovered from this. UI was never updated, things like assignment tracking was never refactored, it was all becoming stale. More importantly, the major issue with all of this was game breaking bugs — bugs that have been in the game since BF3 and each and every release after. Bugs that are so game-breaking you had to (and still have to) quit the game to overcome. Live Service should mean a bug is fixed immediately; not 4-8 months later, or never. The certification process with MSFT, Sony needs to change for the next game. We can’t be waiting 1-2 additional weeks just to get certification of the updates. If a bug in an update significantly breaks the game, it needs to be fixed within days. With months between significant content releases and new maps, players began to find other games to go to. Games that provided lots of new content and talked with their community to make quick and polished changes based on those discussions, which leads me to the final point.

Changes to the core game (that the player base didnt ask for)

Throughout the lifecycle of Battlefield V we saw numerous changes the EA/DICE made, that the majority of the community never asked for. Mainly the two changes to TTK or (Time To Kill), aka how many bullets it takes to kill an enemy. One thing the BFV had going for itself was gunplay. It’s considered the best gunplay in any of the Battlefields. Players loved it and expressed that love. Then EA/DICE changed it out of nowhere, without warning, without talking to their player base. This was likely to make it easier for new players to pick up, or to make the learning curve a little easier. However, that isn’t how a core Battlefield player views this game. The game has a somewhat steep learning curve, parts of it are difficult to master. But those that stick with it are rewarded for improving their skills and learning various tricks and tips. That is what makes Battlefield fun. It’s a challenge when you first come into it, and many people want to work to overcome that challenge. Outside of those opinions, the issue here was changes to the game that the majority of the playerbase didnt want and didnt ever ask for. This in turn caused more development time to both make the changes, but then to revert them…twice. At this point in the life of the game, what became of that was the frustration of the player based turning into anger. People quit, people went on to all platforms of social media bashing and flaming the game. What new person wants to try a game that the core player base is totally frustrated and angry with? Eventually tweaks were made, and although we dont have the same TTK as the game started with, it’s acceptable now. What’s not acceptable is the fiasco of time and the frustration this caused.

To sum it all up, there is no one reason why the game wasn’t as successful as it could have been, but numerous reasons why it’s considered a failure. A couple of those major issues could have been resolved and the game could have flourished. But too many of them happening together was too much.

The next installment of Battlefield needs to be the most polished Battlefield we’ve seen, at launch. It needs to release with a full set of robust tools for communities to run their own servers, day one. The turnaround time on game breaking bugs needs to be no greater than 1-2 weeks for a fix. The UI needs a massive overhaul to keep players in the game, and not exiting a server just to go change assignments. Internally, the development teams need to make sure they are working closer together and relaying correct information to our awesome Community Managers (Jeff Braddock and Adam Freeman). Content needs to come at a constant rate, we can’t have months between, or people leave. Battlefield needs to get back to its roots; focusing on intense, chaotic, large-scaled warfare. It needs to launch with minimal bugs, along with robust tools for micro-communities, that make it what it can be, the best FPS to ever be created.

Well, there you have it, folks. Do you agree with their sentiments? And more importantly, do you think the community will embrace the next Battlefield game even if Battlefield V is fresh on their minds? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments.

SMITE Update 11.45 June 19 Released for Consoles, Here Are the Fixes

While SMITE players just got the big “The Great Dreamer” update just a few days ago, Hi-Rez Studios has released the SMITE update 11.45 June 19 patch, and as one might expect given this is the second patch we’ve gotten in the same week, this is purely for fixes.

SMITE update 11.45 June 19 patch notes:

Description

Fix for Rama camera zoomed in after using Ult.
Ao Kuang camera zoom after using Ult (same issue as Rama, though different fix)

That’s basically it. According to the official SMITE Trello board, some of the top issues brought by The Great Dreamer update such as Cthulhu sometimes turning invisible is still being investigated. Other changes being planned for the next update includes “10 mastery avatar is not in game,” and “Cthulhu pantheon icon showing Chinese in match lobby,” These are marked as “fixed in future release” so players will be glad to know that the next patch should include these fixes.

If there are more changes included in this SMITE Update 11.45 June 19 patch, we’ll update the post. If you spot any, share ’em down below in the comments.

Insurgency Console Release Delayed With No New Release Date

Earlier this year, New World Interactive announced that Inusrgency: Sandstorm would be hitting consoles (PS4, Xbox One) this August 25. Well, that’s not happening. Today, the studio announced the Insurgency console release has been pushed back.

Here’s the message from the official Insurgency Twitter account:

To our fans,

We have important information to share with our community today regarding the status of the upcoming PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases of Insurgency: Sandstorm.

While development of the console versions have been on a good track, we will be unable to launch the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions of Insurgency: Sandstorms on August 25, 2020.

We know this is very disappointing and frustrating news for those of you who have been waiting for the console release, and we know you have been waiting a long time to hear from us. We aim to make use of the additional time to improve the Day 1 experience of our company’s first-ever console title. This additional time will allow us to deliver a more complete and optimised version of the game, as well as explore the exciting possibilities of a next-gen console release in addition to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

We will keep our community updated as and when we get new information, and a new release date will be communicated via our social media and console newsletter. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this uncertain time and hope our fans and players around the world are staying safe and well.

Thank you,

Keith Warner – CEO, Derek Czerkaski – Head of Production

Hopefully, we’ll get console gameplay footage of the game soon to tide us over.

CrossFire Xbox One Beta Leaked on Xbox Store

Those in Asia, the first-person shooter CrossFire should be a familiar name. Those who aren’t familiar with it, it’s a PC game developed by Smilegate Entertainment and published by Tencent Games. While we know that CrossFire is coming to consoles (first on Xbox One), the CrossFire Xbox One beta date has been leaked by the Xbox Store.

According to the listing, it’s set for release this June 25, and will clock in at 5.8GB!

Description

CrossfireX delivers an intense first-person shooter experience where players are immersed in a sprawling global conflict between the world’s two most formidable private military factions: Global Risk employs veterans of powerful armed forces who use advanced technologies to fight for order and security; Black List employs hardened mercenaries trained in guerilla tactics who fight to destabilize oppressive regimes in the name of freedom. Choose your side and complete objective-based missions across a variety of classic and innovative modes featuring tightly crafted gameplay and cinematic visuals.

Mind, this hasn’t been officially announced by Microsoft, so the date might change. If it doesn’t, Xbox One owners can expect a new shooter to grace their consoles soon. It’s not confirmed whether the same beta will be available for PS4, though given that this is coming to Xbox One first, I doubt that.

The Division 2 Operation Iron Horse Raid Rewards, Requirements & More Revealed

Earlier this week, Ubisoft has released The Division 2 Title Update 10 that brings in a host of new changes, and more. While that in itself is exciting, the second Raid for The Division 2 is coming next week! Curious about The Division 2 Operation Iron Horse Raid rewards? Read on.

The Division 2 Raid Operation Iron Horse Rewards, Requirements, Trailers and More:

Season 2

  • Right now we are in the pre-season week, that is also why the Season is already displayed and some audio collectibles can be played as you are doing content.
  • The Season 2 will start on June 23rd.
  • Apparel Event Picture will follow at a later point

Similarity to Season 1

  • Some have mentioned that Season 2 is similar to Season 1 in terms of activities.
  • The Seasons have the goal and are a way to structure endgame.
  • While you can always farm and look for specific items, the Season has the purpose to give you a goal and something to do. The Season Progression, the Reward Track, and so on come on top of that.
  • The Seasons don’t replace new content – besides that, new content like Skyscraper is already announced.
  • The seasons are a way to make sure the game is alive, there is something to do and that there is some guidance that helps you in daily activities.

Access to the Season

  • When you own Warlords of New York, you are level 40 and have completed the Story campaign you have access to Season 2 and all activities.
  • The Premium Track offers extra rewards and cosmetics
  • The Season 2 Pass also gives you a daily project that requires you to complete a mission to earn Season XP.

Raid: Operation Iron Horse

Following the initial Black Friday outbreak, a group of civilians gathered to settle in the United Ironworks; a foundry located close to Washington D.C.

Unfortunately, the True Sons raided the foundry sometime later and took control. Here they have hidden away from the public eye and are once more scheming against The Division by expanding their already vast arsenal of weaponry. However, The Division has learned about their plans and are ready to strike back against this new growing threat.

Operation Iron Horse demonstrates how determined and ruthless the True Sons are. During this challenge, you will not only have to face the True Sons and the secrets they are hiding; but also the treacherous environment of a foundry. All bosses will come with their own unique mechanics and will challenge players’ ability to cooperate efficiently and to operate in a highly challenging environment.

Rewards

  • The Ravenous exotic is a double-barrel rifle that offers both offensive and defensive bonuses to players.
  • The Regulus exotic is a revolver that offers high base damage and creates explosions on headshot kills that amplify damage and apply bleed to all enemies nearby.
  • The Foundry Bulwark gear set is designed for players wanting to maximize their survivability, allowing both their shield and themselves to absorb and repair the damage they take over time.
  • The Future Initiative gear set is designed for players wanting to support their team with strong repairs, while also increasing the damage output of teammates while they’re at full armor.

Crafting Projects

  • The first step is to finish the Raid
  • There are projects to unlock the raid sets and the Regulus blueprints.

Raid Gear Sets

While Bulwark and Future Initiative are assigned to the raid, only the chest and backpack items are exclusive to the raid, the other items drop in the regular loot pool.

This also makes them accessible for players that don’t play the raid.

=> Gear Sets

Access

Operation Iron Horse will be available on June 30th at 6 PM CEST for level 40. To start the raid, players will need to speak with the helicopter pilot at the Base of Operations. This brings up the raid tab on the social menu where it will list the new raid, allowing everyone to start building their raid groups.

Level 30 Raid will follow a week later.

Level 30 Raid later than Level 40

A short explanation of why the level 30 raid comes a week later:

  • For them the Raid is the ultimate challenge for the player
  • Level 40 is the highest version of the game and also the toughest challenge.
  • They did not want to make the world’s first a race between level 30 and level 40 and then have the discussion that the level 30 might have been easier to complete.
  • That is why the level 40 raid got the priority

Operation Iron Horse: Race to World First

Date: June 30th, 5 PM CEST / 11 AM ET / 8 AM PT.

The Race to World First will begin with a pre-show streaming on twitch.tv/thedivisiongame at 3 PM UTC/8 AM PT on June 30, with a showcase by some of the developers behind Operation Iron Horse, before it opens for everyone.

The Raid is free for all players – and any group of 8 players can squad up to take it in, but only a single group per platform can lay claim to the title of “World’s First.” The group is not limited to friends or clan-mates. You can try your hand at the Raid with anyone – but outstanding communication and cooperation will be necessary to have a shot at victory.

The Bellowing Crowd

Be a part of the celebration on June 30th. Leading up to and during the race to the World First, we’ll have Twitch Drops activated on numerous The Division 2 streamers Twitch accounts. Meaning you’ll be able to join in on your favorite stream, look on as all the different teams try their hand at the Raid, and walk away with some rewards of your own!

In order to be eligible to earn Twitch Drops your Ubisoft account and Twitch account must be linked. Linking your accounts can be done here and further instructions of how to do so are available in this support FAQ.

Once the new Raid is live, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

EA Announces That Work on Skate 4 has Begun

During today’s EA Play Live 2020 event, EA closed off their event with the announcement that Skate 4 was indeed in development.

To clarify, they never actually said it was called Skate 4, but it would by count, be the fourth Skate game by the company. The game directors left us with a message, hinting that this was just the beginning while thanking the community for commenting the game into existence.

From the press release:

Skate is back! In response to the voices of incredibly passionate fans for nearly a decade, Chief Studios Officer, Laura Miele, left one last surprise for players. Cuz Parry and Deran Chung, the game’s Game Director and Creative Director respectively, shared that while this is just the beginning and there is a long way to go, work on the next evolution in the Skate franchise has begun.

No additional details for Skate 4 were revealed, though seeing as they are only just starting development, we think its safe to say that the title will most likely launch on next-gen platforms sometimes within the next few years. We’re sure we’ll hear more on the title as we inch closer to next-gen, but for now, just be happy that it’s finally happening after years of requests.

During EA Play Live, the team at Respawn also unveiled that the Lost Treasures Collection Event will start June 23. The event features a new mode, limited time exclusives and a new Town Takeover — Crypto’s Map Room. Players can see the return of the game’s sniper and shotgun only mode – Armed and Dangerous – with a few twists such as Evo Armor and an all-new piece of loot, Mobile Respawn Beacons.

EA Play Live 2020 Stream: Where to Watch the Show

The EA Play Live 2020 event is set to begin in real soon, and to prepare yourself here’s an official list of places you can watch the event.

What Time Does EA Play Live 2020 Stream Begin?

The event will start at 4pm PDT / 7pm EDT today. For those who live in a different region, you can check what time that is using the TimeandDate site.

How Long is the Show?

According to some sources, the show is roughly 50 minutes long, although it is pre-recorded, meaning nothing is actually “live.”

Where Can I Watch EA Play Live?

Youtube: You can watch it from the EA’s official Youtube channel, which is embedded below.

Twitch: Usually the alternative to Youtube considering it’s typically running a bit ahead. This will be hosted on EA’s Twitch Channel.

EA.com: EA is also hosting the show on their own website, all you have to do is visit this URL: https://www.ea.com/ea-play-live

What Can We Expect?

As of now, we know that Star Wars Squadron will have some gameplay to debut. We can most likely expect to see Madden 21, along with the full portfolio of sports titles that EA publishes, including UFC 4 which leaked a week ago. Otherwise, the rest is up for speculation, though don’t be surprised if a new Need for Speed game makes an appearance. We don’t expect to hear on anything from Battlefield, though if we do it’ll most likely be a brief mention. Medal of Honor VR will most likely make an appearance.

Miss the show? Don’t worry we’ll have coverage of the biggest announcements once they are revealed, so be sure to check back here later today!

Borderlands 3 update today June 18 patch notes:

Today we will release a hotfix for Borderlands 3, which will be live on all platforms by 12:00 PM PST. This week’s hotfixes give a buff to the Webslinger weapon and address some grammatical errors. To apply hotfixes, wait at the main menu until you see a sign that says “Hotfixes Applied”! If you are experiencing any issues or want to provide feedback, please submit a ticket to support.2k.com.

  • Increased the damage and magazine size of the Webslinger assault rifle

Watch Over an Hour of Baldur’s Gate 3 Gameplay Here

Excited for Larian Studios’ (Divinity: Original Sin) Baldur’s Gate 3? Curious how it’ll look in actual gameplay? Well, here’s over an hour of Baldur’s Gate 3 gameplay to feast on!

Check out raw combat Baldur’s Gate 3 gameplay below.

Here’s the official info from the pres release:

Here’s some of the new changes and content shown in the stream:

  • The narrator that will lead players through the game has changed to present tense/second-person narration.
  • Changes have been made to the initiative system. Previous gameplay showed the side initiative, which has evolved over the past month. Characters with similar individual initiative can now be grouped together automatically, allowing players to try out combinations and align their attacks in a group initiative system. Other characters and enemies will have individual initiative.
  • Vincke showed the inspiration system for the first time. Inspiration points allow the player to reroll one of their dice — a very valuable tool for when the roll of the dice decides life and death. These points are awarded to the player for finding special solutions during their playthrough.
  • Reactivity to the player character: Vincke played as a custom character elf, showcasing how the world reacts to who you are and, more importantly, which decisions you have made in the past.

You can check out how character customization works (at least initially) here.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is the third mainline entry in the franchise, and is based on the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop RPG license. It’s currently set for release for PC and Stadia.

  • On PC, fixed a throttling issue when changing window focus.

  • Made a number of minor text fixes.

Will we see another patch this week for the game after the No Man’s Sky update 2.54 June 18 patch? Who knows, but at least Hello Games is prolific in releasing these fixes out.

Cyberpunk 2077 Delayed to November

Here’s some bad news for the day: CD Projekt RED has announced the Cyberpunk 2077 delayed news today, and it’s due to the game needing more time in the oven for bug fixes.

Here’s the studio’s message announced on Twitter:

We have decided to move the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 from September 17 to November 19.

Those of you who are familiar with the way we make games know that we won’t ship something which is not ready. “Ready when it’s done” is not just a phrase we say because it sounds right, it’s something we live by even when we know we’ll take the heat for it. At the same time, we are fully aware that making such a decision costs us your trust and trading trust for additional time is one of the hardest decisions a game developer can make. And despite we think it’s the right decision for the game, we’d still like to apologize for making you wait longer. Our intention is to make Cyberpunk 2077 something that will stay with you for years to come. In the end, we hope you understand why we did what we did.

At the time we are writing these words, Cyberpunk 2077 is finished both content and gameplay-wise. The quests, the cutscenes, the skills and items; all adventures Night City has to offer — it’s all there. But with such an abundance of content and complex systems interweaving with each other, we need to properly go through everything, balance game mechanics and fix a lot of bugs. A huge world means a huge number of things to iron out and we will spend the additional time doing exactly that.

This week, journalists from all over the world are starting to independently play the game. We are eager (and quite stressed) to hear their opinions, as well as see your reactions when they publish their previews right after we air Nighty City Wire on the 25th of June. We hope this will satisfy some of your hunger for the game as we work to polish it for the November launch.

Thank you,

Marcin Iwinski – Co-Founder & Adam Badowski – Head of Studio

Those unaware, Cyberpunk 2077 will have multiplayer, just not at launch, and the studio will have a large team working on it, even.
