Ni no Kuni Studio Level-5 Teases MMORPG-Like Game for 20th Anniversary Project

While Level-5 has just shipped RPG Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom just a few days ago, it seems the studio is already hard at work on its next project, and it’s going to be pretty big.

As part of an on-going series of interviews by Japanese gaming site 4Gamer, Bandai Namco Entertainment Producer Katsuhiro Harada of Tekken fanem sat down and had a chat with Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino to talk about Level-5’s upcoming project for its 20th anniversary.

Harada:

“Don’t you want to make your own MMORPG?”

Hino:

“I do. I always think, ‘If I get a chance I want to make one.’ However, I still feel the pain of having to cancel True Fantasy Live Online (Xbox).”

Harada:

“Ah, for you that was enough, huh.”

Hino:

“To make an MMORPG, you need a well-oiled company as well as the knowledge and skill to create online games. It’s not enough to just sort of want to make an MMORPG. Back then we weren’t able to adhere to the schedule because we prioritized our mood. Then there were certain things with regards to the platform that ultimately forced us to have to cancel the project.”

Harada:

“Even after such an experience, you still felt you wanted to make one, then. I don’t know whether or not you still have such a
plan, but if you had the investment what kind of theme would you choose? Based on your past work, it seems like it would be a medieval kingdom theme.”

Hino:

“We do have an idea. I’m not sure if we can call it an MMORPG or not, but were plan to make a big title on the same scale as one. Also, since were going into our 20th year, we want to make something we like. If we able to get support from talented people able to do things we can’t, then I think we’ll be able to make it. By the way, the game we’re preparing won’t be fantasy but rather ‘modern day.’”

Harada:

“Oh, is it OK for you to be saying that here?”

Hino:

“It was said somewhere that we’ll make a game for our 20th anniversary, so I think it’s OK. Although we say it’s a game for the 20th anniversary, it won’t come out this year. Rather, we wanted to make the announcement in the year of the anniversary. For example, Ni no Kuni was a 10th anniversary celebration title, but it wasn’t actually released until two years later.”

Obviously, there’s nothing definite to announce just yet. But based on what Hino has divulged, it’s a big game, which rivals that of an MMORPG in scope, and it’ll be set in a “modern day” setting.

Hopefully, it’ll be something that has multiplayer in it (given the scope, that’s very likely), and that it’ll be something that’s more ambitious than even Ni no Kuni II.

Overwatch Avoid As Teammate Lets You Block Useless Players

The Overwatch Avoid As Teammate feature allows players to avoid being paired up with particularly useless or annoying users. The ability to “avoid” others is currently being tested on the Overwatch PTR, and following some tweaking to ensure it doesn’t have unfair impacts on matchmaking, should eventually hit live servers.

Players who are avoided won’t be seen for seven days. If a player is avoided many times, they will receive a message letting them know that they’ve been blocked on a considerable number of occasions, and so queue times may be longer. This will hopefully cause those players to rethink the way that they play.

Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan detailed the new Avoid As Teammate in the latest developer update:

Game director Jeff Kaplan discusses a new feature currently being tested in Overwatch: Avoid as Teammate!

  • 01:21 – Introducing new feature, Avoid as Teammate!
  • 01:37 – Players you select with the feature will be avoided for seven days
  • 02:22 – How to use this feature to help control your game experience
  • 03:32 – There might be side effects of this system, but we’re closely monitoring it
  • 04:10 – Thoughts on why we limit how many people you can avoid
  • 04:40 – How this system affects those who have a high number of players avoiding them
  • 05:52 – We are paying very close attention to how this feature performs
  • 06:00 – We will continue to create features to help you craft your experience in Overwatch

Do you think the Overwatch Avoid As Teammate feature is good for the game? Or will it hurt the community? Let us know.

GTA Online Ban Wave Hits Innocent Players, Rockstar Has Yet to Respond

Following a recent game update, a GTA Online ban wave has caused many innocent players to have their access restricted, without the opportunity to appeal. As you might imagine, many of these players have hundreds and hundreds of hours invested into the online component. The ban is only for 30 days, but still, Rockstar punishing the innocent isn’t a great thing.

It’s unclear why the GTA Online ban wave happened, with the game’s Reddit community speculating many different causes. Rockstar Games has yet to acknowledge the bans, and so players are stuck.

The GTA 5 Steam page has been hit with many negative reviews, causing the overall rating to fall down to “Mixed.”

Hopefully we’ll get an update from Rockstar Games soon. I think these players deserve an explanation and some significant compensation.

In other GTA news, GTA 5 recently topped the UK charts again, four years after its initial release. What’s more, the GTA Online community set a new record.

Far Cry 5 Secret Ending: Complete the Game in 10 Minutes

A Far Cry 5 secret ending has already been discovered by players who have been granted early copies of the game. The Far Cry franchise is known for its awesome Easter eggs, which includes the secret ending in Far Cry 4, where players can see the credits roll without spilling any blood.

The Far Cry 5 alternate ending was discovered and showcased by YouTube creator JackFrags. He’s done us a solid and not included any big spoilers in the video embedded below:

Far Cry 5 has a secret ending that allows you to complete the game in under 10 minutes. Let’s check it out in this video. NO Major Spoilers! Do you think Joseph Seed has powers, did he hack the radios, or was it something else like a spy on the inside?

Players simply have to wait for a couple of minutes and avoiding hitting the prompt to arrest Joseph Seed. Then the Far Cry 5 secret ending will begin.

It’s very cool of Ubisoft to include something like this. I’m sure even more Easter eggs await curious players. Let us know if you’ll be playing Far Cry 5 when it releases on March 27.

In other Far Cry 5 news, the game’s microtransactions won’t just be cosmetic-only, but will also “save time.” The Far Cry 5 Arcade mode will let players create and play on custom maps. Also, if you’re planning to run the game at 4K 60fps on PC, here’s the hardware requirements you’ll need to meet.

Warframe Microtransactions Removed Due to Being Too Popular

Well, here’s a new one: Digital Extremes, the studio behind the massively popular free-to-play game Warframe removed an in-game feature since it was working too well. In a documentary series by Noclip which you can watch below, Digital Extremes studio manager Sheldon Carter talks about Warframe microtransactions and designing the game’s economy.

Carter talked about how in one instance, a Warframe microtransaction element had to be removed simply because it was being used way too much. Back when the virtual pets that helped players in missions were introduced (called “Kubrows”), players could pay a premium currency called platinum to randomly generate a new fur pattern or color combination for their pets. It cost around 10 platinum or about $0.67 in real-world money. Sounds harmless, right? Well, it seems one person went a little overboard with it, and that’s when Digital Extremes realized they created a slot machine in-game.

Here’s what Carter had to say about it in the documentary:

We had a lever, basically, for all intents and purposes. And we saw, you know, a guy pull the lever like 200 times. And it’s just like, ‘oh my dear god, what have we done? We’ve created a slot machine.’ And so you know, it was a couple days I think it took us to take it out—a day, day and a half. That one is a big regret.

While this feature turned out to be a moneymaker for Digital Extremes, it completely went against what the intent of the pets were supposed to be, as well as the game itself. Interestingly, it was the spending habits of one “whale” (a person who spends a lot on microtransactions for a game) that drove Digital Extremes to patch this slot machine feature out (hotfix 14.0.5) in 2014. Check out this part of the interview with Carter in the video below (it’s a multi-part series, which you can check out at the YouTube channel’s video playlist).

This is both weird and refreshing at the same time, right? I mean, when was the last time you’ve heard a studio pull a feature out for making too much money? But then again, this is why Warframe is successful and is still being played by millions to this day — even years after launch.

Did Digital Extremes did the right thing in pulling it or should have they left it in?

PUBG Mobile #1 Most Downloaded Game in 100 Countries

While Fortnite might be this year’s hot new game, don’t forget that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) is still going strong as well. In a press release, PUBG Corporation has announced that PUBG Mobile is now the #1 most downloaded game in over 100 countries for both iOS and Android!

In less than one week since PUBG Mobile launched on March 19, it has become one of the fastest games to reach the top spot in downloads. Check out parts of the announcement straight from the press release.

The widely popular Battle Royale released its mobile port on the App Store and Google Play Store internationally on March 19th and was met with an increasingly positive reaction from players and critics alike.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ full-featured mobile port of the massively popular Battle Royale title has led it to claim top honors in a large number of countries and regions. Players remain impressed by the mobile game’s seamless and intuitive integration, all while remaining faithful to its PC roots.

PUBG Corporation and Tencent worked in tandem to create an authentic and satisfying PUBG experience on what has become the most accessible platform. Providing a well-optimized experience for all players remains a core value for the developers as they continue to release the hand-held rendition of the popular Battle Royale game.

For those who’ve yet to try it out, you can download PUBG Mobile for free on the Apple App Store, or Android Play Store.

This announcement comes hot at the heels of Fortnite’s massive success which saw the free-to-play game beat out PUBG in total revenue earned in a single month! Given the fierce battle these two are in, expect more chest-thumping announcements from both to make their way out soon.

Sea of Thieves Upcoming Update Will Charge the Player Gold for Dying

Here’s a bummer: it seems Rare is implementing a “death tax” for a Sea of Thieves upcoming update. This means that players will lose a little bit of in-game gold whenever they bite the dust in the game.

Here’s what Rare has to say officially about it:

Death Cost – This new feature has the Captain of the Ferry of the Damned deduct a small gold fee when you die. Rates are dependant on the cause of death, so the more avoidable the death, the less patience the Captain will have when we enable this feature!

Please note, we never intended to charge players for PvP related deaths, as we understand the negative impact this would have on player experience.

We understand that this addition to the release notes was a little confusing, and in the future we will ensure that any future updates we discuss give you a better understanding of how and why we’re implementing it. Sea of Thieves is constantly evolving, and any feature we will test, monitor data and listen to your feedback to ensure we’re making the right decisions.

It’s not known what the rates will be for each death in-game, but it will depend on the cause of death.  Given how the respawning in the game works, people on the Sea of Thieves subreddit are understandably quite upset.

In other Sea of Thieves news, Rare has issued a statement regarding the game’s apparent lack of content; there’s also a video of the Kraken making the rounds, which you should check out.

Call of Duty: WWII Domination XL Now Live, New Weapon Tuning Hotfix Pushed Out

The time has come, people! After a lot of teases and announcements, the COD WW2 Domination XL playlist is now live! This means that those who prefer the old Domination scoring in past Call of Duty games where each kill counted for 100 points can now test it out now!

In addition to that, the hotfix Sledgehammer Games pushed out for the COD WW2 Domination XL, also included a bunch of weapon tuning updates. For the first time, my beloved Type 100 SMG has been given a buff!

Quick Update on Weapon Tuning, Bronze Star Tuning, Hot Fix
byu/SHG_Hammer inWWII

In case the Reddit post didn’t show up, here’s what it says:

HOT FIX

  • Fixed issue where Care Package parachutes were not taking damage and detaching

WEAPON TUNING

MP40

  • Slight recoil buff

Type 100

  • Slight fire rate buff

These changes were made to bring these weapons more in line with the PPSh-41. Dom XL is now live for both Standard and HC, so get in there, try out these weapons, and let us know what you think.

BRONZE STAR ADJUSTMENTS

Additionally, for the Bronze Star, we are now taking into account kills with Lethals, Scorestreaks, and weapon switching. We’ve also adjusted the logic to decrease the amount of one-shot kills that are shown. The goal with these adjustments was to allow for a lot more variety in the Bronze Star plays and highlight more impactful gameplay moments.

You can check out the specific changes to everything in the latest major patch right here.

SteamSpy: Chinese Players Play Twice As Much PUBG Than USA Players

PUBG is absolutely massive worldwide, with players in all locations able to battle royale it up on PC, Xbox One, and now Android and iOS. It’s a huge title which millions are playing every single day.

SteamSpy is one of the tools used to quantify just how successful PUBG has been. SteamSpy’s creator and owner, Sergey Galyonkin, shared some interesting facts about PUBG during a panel at GDC 2018 (via PC Gamer). One of these facts was that Chinese players spend over twice as many hours per week playing PUBG than US players. China averages an overage of 16 hours per week, while the US only manages 7.

Chinese players really love their PUBG, huh?

It’s also worth mentioning that internet cafes are very popular in China, with a single username being used across multiple people. This could account for the mind-blowing average.

In other PUBG news, a flare gun has been added to the game, and it’s stupidly powerful. Looking specifically at the Xbox One version, here’s what the developer has planned for the game’s immediate futurePUBG Mobile is also now available on both Android and iOS.

EA Is Now Creating Its Own Battlefield Bots

EA is creating its own Battlefield bots using the Search for Extraordinary Experiences Division (SEED). SEED’s aim is to provide a self-learning AI that is able to teach itself to play games. This isn’t a pre-programmed system; the bots literally play and learn as they go.

If SEED is able to successful create an AI that accurately imitates how gamers play, they could become a vital resource for pre-launch testing.

Check out the video below to see the Battlefield bots in action!

EA’s Search for Extraordinary Experiences Division (SEED) — a team that explores the future of interactive entertainment — has built a self-learning AI-agent that taught itself how to play Battlefield 1 multiplayer from scratch.

An interview with SEED Technical Director Magnus Nordin goes into more detail about what the technology is capable of, and what the future holds. Read it here.

In other Battlefield news, the BF1 console Community Test Environment has been discontinuedBattlefield V has been confirmed by what is reportedly an EA Play 2018 banner, and more leaks point towards Battlefield V being this year’s game.

Josef Fares Discusses A Way Out’s Length, EA’s Involvement and More

A Way Out has now launched, offering a co-operative experience involving two convicts who attempt to escape from prison. The game’s director, Josef Fares, has been pretty vocal about the game and its creation.

Speaking with GameSpot, Fares revealed some interesting facts about A Way Out:

  • It will take you 6-8 hours to finish A Way Out
  • Developer Hazelight started with just 10 people on the project, before ramping up to around 40 later in development. Only 12 people worked on Brothers.
  • Fares wrote the script himself, though he worked with a “script doctor” as well.
  • Fares says EA has been very supportive and hands-off. “If EA wants to make an apple greener, I can say no,” Fares said.
  • 100 percent of the income from A Way Out will go to developer Hazelight. EA makes nothing, Fares said. EA helps with marketing and support, but apparently gets nothing from sales.
  • He acknowledges that EA has its fair share of issues, as all publishers do. “They sh*t and take a pee like everybody else,” Fares said.
  • Fares is incredibly passionate about A Way Out and particularly its co-op multiplayer, saying he would turn down $10 million to make a strictly single-player game.
  • Fares would never make a game with mictrotransactions.
  • There are no plans for a Nintendo Switch edition, at least not yet.

Will you be picking up A Way Out? Let us know.

The Last of Us 2 Is in a Playable State Confirmed by Voice Actor

While Naughty Dog already confirmed that we’ll be seeing The Last of Us 2 at E3 later this June, it seems the game is already in a playable state even if we haven’t seen much of it yet.

This tidbit was confirmed by actor Troy Baker who’s doing the voice-over work and motion capture stuff for Joel in The Last of Us 2. In a video interview at the MCM Comic Con in Birmingham, Troy Baker (along with Nolan North) talked about their performances in various properties, and of course, the conversation goes down The Last of Us 2 path. According to Baker, he’s played the game during a Naughty Dog playtest and deemed it “fantastic.”

Obviously, someone working on a product telling us it’s fantastic isn’t groundbreaking news, but at least we now have confirmation that the game is playable, which means we’ll probably see gameplay real soon — at least I hope. You can watch Baker talk about it in the video below (around the 11:30 mark).

Let’s hope this means that we’ll see The Last of Us 2 out soon, and not in 2020 or even later.
