H-Hour – Beta Not a Demo, New Details and Gameplay Trailer Soon?

SOF Studios sheds some light on its vision for H-Hour’s beta and shares a few tidbits of what to expect from the game.

Nowadays, betas are done just a few weeks before a game launches, leaving many to believe that it’s an actual demo, rather than a test session.

The team also discussed how the beta has limited slots and that the donation fund would eventually be closed once they’ve filled in the spots. Users who do participate in the closed beta will have an opportunity to play in the title’s first broadcast tournament. It also seems from the forum post that video uploads are allowed, though it’s not official.

While the Beta is still a long ways before it enters closed testing, funders and others who are interested in the title may be getting a first look at an up-to-date build gameplay with a trailer that may (or may not) be releasing soon.

Gamepedia also launched the official wiki page for H-Hour along with an exclusive look at one of the maps, which you can view below alongside a new screenshot.

  • Clan Tags (Support 4 characters)
  • Will have a “ton” of clan support
  • Spectator mode
  • Strafe, similar to SOCOM
  • Bombs don’t respond in demolition if left untouched
  • Character customization in physique
  • Taunts are confirmed

Titanfall Australian Servers Coming Online Friday

Dedicated servers that will host Titanfall players in Australia are coming online in the region as of this Friday, March 14, says Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella.

According to his announcement on Twitter, capacity will build each day with the combined efforts of Microsoft and publisher EA.

This comes as good news to those concerned over lack of server support in the area as it was unclear if servers would be built in time for Titanfall’s launch in Australia. It’s not clear if the current solution is a permanent one, or temporary until proper Microsoft Azure servers are built in the region.

Titanfall is now available in the region on the Xbox One and PC.

Grand Theft Auto Online Wins “Best Multiplayer” at the BAFTAs

Rockstar and Rockstar North’s Grand Theft Auto 5 was a big winner at tonight’s BAFTA awards, coming away with three awards and nine nominations in total.

It just so happens that “Best Multiplayer” was one of those three awards, of which both Battlefield 4 and The Last of Us were nominees for.

Best Multiplayer

  • Battlefield 4
  • Dota 2
  • Grand Theft Auto 5 – WINNER
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • The Last of Us
  • World of Tanks

Grand Theft Auto Online, launching one month after the base game in October 2013, didn’t get off to a great start. Servers weren’t able to handle the initial player load for the first few days while stability issues were sorted out during its first few weeks online. As a form of player appreciation, a “Stimulus Package” of $GTA500,000 was offered to those affected by launch troubles one month after release.

Nevertheless GTA Online was an ambitious project from the get-go and went on to become one of last-gen’s most unforgettable multiplayer experiences. It went on to win second place in our Multiplayer Experience of 2013 – Readers’ Choice Award and became a favorite among some of our staff by the end of the year.

So, congratulations to Rockstar!

Thanks, VG247.

Titanfall Cheaters Are Being “Rooted Out”, Aimbot Users Beware

Respawn Entertainment is ‘rooting out’ any influx of cheaters that Titanfall’s legitimate PC fan base may have had any unfortunate dealings with over the past 48-hour period.

Titanfall is only two days old in North America and already reports of “aimbotters”, cheaters using software to auto-aim or auto-snap their curser on to enemy players, are beginning to surface. The studio announced publicly that they will be taking proper action “soon”.

The team added that they are specifically targeting aimbot users “and such”.

Have you run into any cheaters on the PC?

Ubisoft “Forced” Developers to Showcase Watch Dogs at E3 2012

Apparently, the CEO of Ubisoft pushed the team behind Watch Dogs at Ubisoft Montreal to present the game before the developers felt it was the right time.

They forced us to go at E3 2012,”  Jonathan Morin told EDGE in an interview for the magazine. “We didn’t know what the hell those new consoles would be, so Watch Dogs really has worked on [seventh]-gen systems since the start.”

“But we always pushed the ideas, the design, the core of Watch Dogs in such a way that we felt it would fit well with what we thought would be the future of games. Yves [Guillemot, Ubisoft’s CEO] was the one who wanted us to go at that E3, even though we felt it was a bit early, and in the end I think he was right“.

Watch Dogs has come under fire over the most recent gameplay trailer with developers promising more answers about the graphics soon.

Watch Dogs drops this May for all major platforms, but you might be able to have taste of the game with a beta, reportedly in the works.

McCoy also talked about plans of increasing the Xbox One version’s resolution, saying that priority is given to performance.

Lastly, McCoy reiterated that game modes with higher player counts would likely not be included in any future updates, though he didn’t give a downright “no”.

Bethesda on Elder Scrolls Online Subscription Fee: “Either You’re All In or You’re Not”

Bethesda and Zenimax’s MMORPG based on the popular Elder Scrolls series will hide behind a monthly subscription fee of $14.99 that the publisher and developer says will support a steady flow of additional downloadable content.

Bethesda’s Vice President of PR, Pete Hines, calls it a “value proposition,” he said when speaking to GameSpot.

“We feel pretty strongly about the support we’re going to have for the game and what you’re going to get for those dollars,” he said in response to a question about the studio’s decision to turn away from a free-to-play model. “We’re also very confident in our ability to support it with content. And not content of the magnitude of, it’s a new month, here’s a new sword or here’s a funny hat–but content that is real and significant and it feels like regular and consistent DLC releases.”

There’s also the issue of access. How does a studio avoid segregating a large online community when only some players have access to certain content while others only have access to other content. In that sense, the pick-and-choose approach didn’t work in Bethesda’s eyes.

“So you wind up in a situation where you say, look, by and large, when you’re talking about regular content, adding new features and new parts of the world, either you’re all in or you’re not,” Hines said.

While the subscription-based model might scare a way a number of potential players, Bethesda doesn’t seem worried.

“We’re not trying to make a game that everybody who plays games will automatically buy,” he explained. “It is a certain kind of game. There’s no shooter elements. There’s no aliens. It is a massive, ‘Go where you want, do what you want’ game that we think offers the kind of experience that’s worthy of a subscription.”

Lastly, Hines made it clear that though a free-to-play model might sound appealing, it wouldn’t allow the studio to afford to assign a significant percentage of the team to development on future content.

“That just seems like a lesser game, and we’re not going to make a lesser game that might be more palatable,” he continued. “We want to do the version that we think is the best game and the coolest experience. And that means putting a lot of people and a lot of content creators towards having stuff that comes our regularly; every four weeks, five weeks, six weeks. Big new stuff that you want to do.”

The Elder Scrolls Online launches on Mac and PC April 4 and is also coming to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in June. Check out the official unboxing of the Elder Scrolls Online Imperial Edition.

BF4 Naval Strike Levolution Is About Interactivity, Weather Effects, and Shifting Time of Day

In Battlefield 4: Naval Strike, dropping later this month for Battlefield 4 Premium members, DICE wants to do Levolution a tad differently.

Rather than wowing audiences with spectacle or destructive events, the studio has “been focusing on how the player can interact within the levels to create and block paths for vehicles, or make other strategic use of the environments,” writes DICE in the latest Battlefield Blog update.

Being all about ocean combat, some of Naval Strike’s interactive events will revolve around that style of gameplay. “For example, you will be able to close flood doors to stop vehicles from entering a submarine base and capturing the objective inside,” says DICE. “You can also blow up part of a crashed airplane to create new cover for infantry.”

Though weather effects will be a part of what Naval Strike has to offer, the studio isn’t interested in “copying” popular Battlefield 4 maps like Paracel Storm.

“As for storms, instead of copying what has already been done in Paracel Storm, you can expect different visual styles and weather on all four Naval Strike maps,” DICE explains. “There’ll be calm seas, stormy weather and many other weather effects. For instance, on the Mortar Strike map, you’ll start fighting at dawn and the map will be lit up by the resort lights. As the fight rages on, the sunrise will drench the tropical island in beautiful sunlight.”

What’s your take? Sounds interesting enough?

Evolve To Feature Better Character Development Than Left 4 Dead

When Turtle Rock started development on Evolve, a main area that the studio really wanted to improve on was character development, says executive producer Denby Grace.

In Left 4 Dead, characters were only ever developed through voice overs. Turtle Rock hopes to fix this with their next-gen first-person asymmetrical shooter, Evolve.

“The hunters in Evolve are specifically characterised, in their looks and their VO, but now they each have unique items and weaponry,” Grace recently told Edge Online. “When you’re selecting a character, you’re selecting that character based not just on who they are but also their abilities and what they can do, and we hope that people find that sort of match.”

Despite sharing similar design characteristics to L4D, Evolve appears to be moving away from the whole shoot-and-spray-hoards-of-enemies ideology and is instead leaning towards a more tactical, team-based approach.

If you missed it, be sure to check out Evolve’s first gameplay footage right here.

Excited to learn more?

Xbox One – Digital Midnight Launches Are The Future Microsoft Is “Building Towards”

While Titanfall‘s recent launch is proving to be a successful cure for the FPS itch, it has also left a number of Xbox One owners yearning for improvements with regards to digital game releases.

As you may have experienced, Titanfall’s digital launch schedule resulted in lot of early 3am risers (or night owls) on the East Coast, eager to start their game download as early as possible. Meanwhile, physical sales began right on cue at 12 midnight in the same regions, giving a three hour head start to consumers attending brick and mortar launch events or openings.

The situation isn’t ideal, but luckily, Microsoft sees things the same way.

Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer recently remarked on Twitter that a future of midnight launches on Xbox Live is also the future the company is “building towards”.

Expect to hear more in the coming months.

Chief product officer Marc Whitten says a future Xbox One system update is in the works that focuses on external hard drive storage, notification improvements, and more.

If the latest rumors are to be believed, Digital Illusion CE’s sequel to the unique free-running game, Mirror’s Edge, will include a “multiplayer playground” within its always online open world.

The info comes from “verified sources”, says Rocketchainsaw, who states that part of Mirror’s Edge’s open world environment will include include “a persistent, ‘always online’ component.”

“The open world is considered a multiplayer ‘playground’ where other plays can drop-in/drop-out seamlessly, freely choosing their level of interaction with other players and the game world. A comparison to Journey‘s online feature was given as the closest example.”

According to the info, a co-op mode of sorts and competitive time trials will also make an appearance in the game.

Sounds pretty awesome. But, you know, take this one with a pinch of salt.

Would you take a side of multiplayer with your Mirror’s Edge 2?

“When You Push Innovation, You Miss Other Things” – EA on Battlefield 4 Issues

A few days ago, the CEO of Electronic Arts, Andrew Wilson, took the stage at the SXSW event in Austin to show off Titanfall and reflect on previous titles published under the company.

“Building games is very hard… when you push innovation, you miss other things. We’ve changed our process,” Wilson stated in response to a fan tweet questioning launch issues that marred popular EA titles, specifically Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, and Sim City.

Exactly how EA’s process has been changed with regards to that topic remains unclear.

“Our focus is on the player experience …. at the center of every revolution in our industry is the gamer,” Wilson added. “I came from a small studio, figuring out how to drive innovation. The indie spirit is important to the industry.”

He continued: “The games I was involved in were played by millions of people. EA gave me a chance to do that. I have a deep desire to re-inject two things into EA: one is the entrepreneurial spirit and two is a ‘why’ we do what we do.”

“Why is it we come to work everyday? We believe interactive games are the single best form of entertainment on the planet,” he concluded.

Recently, EA’s Chief Financial Officer shared that the Battlefield franchise hasn’t “seen any damage”.

“Clearly we’re very focused on protecting the brand,” he said.

Even Bungie is Playing Titanfall

Even Bungie, creators of one of the most ground-breaking shooter series of all time, Halo, is playing Respawn Entertainment’s recently launched sci-fi shooter, Titanfall.

The team published this tweet earlier today, showing off the massive “loot drop” left at their studio:

Bungie is currently gearing up for the beta of their debut project, the massive shared-world sci-fi fantasy shooter, Destiny, launching this September 9.

Not that it’s important news, but it’s kind of cool to see a well-respected studio like Bungie enjoying the work of the talented men and women now working at Respawn Entertainment, despite the fierce competition between publishers Activision and EA.
