Modern Warfare 3 PS3 Patch 1.17, Hot Fix Now Live – Patch Notes

Infinity Ward has released a title update for Modern Warfare 3 on the PS3 platform, and it should be available for everyone now. The patch weighs in at a modest size of 31MB.

The patch is said to further improve searching for games and help analyse matchmaking so they can do more precise enhancements for those experiencing difficulties searching for lobbies, which we reported on recently.

It also fixes a bug for the upcoming free Modern Warfare 2 map, Terminal, which has recently been given a release date for Xbox 360, and is TBD for PS3/PC – you can read about that in our Terminal details article here.

Here are the official patch notes:

  • Added more telemetry for matchmaking and made some adjustments on region weighting
  • Fix for Terminal missing message incorrectly being displayed in Private Match

Xbox 360 and PC platforms are expected to get the same matchmaking improvements and more telemetry additions at a later  date. You can view upcoming updates and improvements – which include improvements to lag compensation and the spawning system – in our round-up article here.

Also, a hot fix for all platforms was implemented early this morning, fixing a small issue caused by a knock-on effect in a hot fix earlier on in the week closing up loopholes for potential “hacked” classes.

  • Fixed an issue (introduced inadvertently Tuesday as part of a hot-fix hacker prevention measure) where only the first attachment would register on a player’s secondary in-game when using Overkill Pro.
Update: According to Mark Rubin, more updates for matchmaking are going to be released. “We’re getting a lot of data from the telemetry we added. But need more,” Rubin explained when I asked him.

Thanks to Moriarty for all the tip and help!

An Initial Look at Battlefield 3’s “Matches” Feature, Coming Soon

Battlefield 3’s “Matches” feature is finally getting its grand entrance.

Many BF3 vets will have noticed the Matches feature sitting underneath the multiplayer menu on their Battlelog for quite some time now. It was rather apparent that it would allow users to set up competitive matches among other players on rented servers, but until now, details have been scarce. At last, the official Battlefield Blog has released the first bit of info and gives us our first look at what it’s all about.

The Matches feature “will allow players to coordinate competitive multiplayer sessions with their friends and squad members.” Players will be able to control variables like the “time, server, game settings and roster for their matches.” Of course, in order to set up a match, players must be actively renting a BF3 server on either the PC, Xbox 360 or PS3.

After preliminary decisions are made and settings like “friendly fire, 3D spotting, squad-leader spawning, kill cam, health regeneration, a list of weapon unlocks that will be made available to players are tweaked to the users, and more” are established, players can then select rosters for their teams from their friends lists or Platoon. An assigned team leader on the opposing team will be able to select a roster for his or her own team.

After the set up process, all that’s left is for the match to actually begin. Each match will be preceded by a Warm-up Phase where no points are accumulated. This will continue until all participant have signaled that they are ready to begin the actual match.

Results will be viewable on the Battlelog after each match where players can view the “number of rounds played, what maps were used, the team that won each round, and other relevant information.”

It’s been a long time coming, but easy access to competitive/tournament play in Battlefield 3 is finally on its way. Stay tuned for more details and check out some of the images below.

Don’t forget about Battlefield 3’s Double XP event on until the 8th of July!

Black Ops II – Treyarch on Re-imagined Maps, Nuketown 2025, New Black Ops Easter Egg, Why Nuketown is Popular

Dan Bunting of Treyarch breaks down exactly why Nuketown was not only one of Black Ops’ most popular multiplayer maps, but one of Call of Duty’s most popular multiplayer maps in general and hints at what kind of goodies we can expect to find in Black Ops II’s recently announced Nuketown 2025. He also spills the beans on an original Nuketown Easter Egg that has yet to be revealed and comments on the concern of value when it comes to re-imagining old maps.

“I think it’s a little bit of all of those ‘variables’. It was sort of the perfect storm of, just, magic – all the things that came together and made it happen,” explains Bunting as he recalls the development process of Black Ops’ Nuketown during a recent podcast with Dan Amrich.

He continues to describe it’s inception, stating that the team at Treyarch wanted to make a small map that “brought out what’s best of Call of Duty multiplayer which is that high-intensity, fast-paced action.” It was imperative to create a map where players would constantly be colliding with one another and finding themselves in gunfights quickly. He also described it as “kind of like all of the core fundamentals of level design refined down to simplicity with no fluff,” adding, “and then throw in on top of that the easter eggs and campiness to it. Of course, that makes it fun.”

If you haven’t noticed, Nuketown from the original Black Ops (which will be seeing a Double XP weekend this weekend) was filled with Easter Eggs, including the hidden RC Car path, the population counter and the secret mannequin nuke bomb among many more – 14 in total, to be exact, according to Bunting. Luckily, he made it clear that gamers can expect the same sort of mysteries in Nuketown 2025. “Its sort of in the genetic code of Treyarch, it’s in our blood,” he comments. When Treyarch says they’re “re-imagining Nuketown,” Bunting assures that hidden Easter Eggs are a part of the process and promises a lot of thought going into it.

Bunting also spilled the beans regarding one Easter Egg in particular that has yet to be revealed until now. You may notice one of the moving trucks owned by a fictional company called “Westward Moving and Delivery,” or, WMD. WMD is, in fact, how Treyarch refers to their weapons and vehicles art team or the alias under which they operate. This might not be something anyone other than those who work at Treyarch could have caught, but it still is a little mystery that has now been solved.

The issue of value was also brought up for discussion when it comes to re-imagining old maps. How do developers strike a balance between avoiding the recycling of old material yet still pleasing those fans who want a familiar experience? “A well designed map is a well designed map,” states Bunting. “Doesn’t matter when it happened, what game it was in. Good maps are good maps, and I think everybody really, actually wants those. The problem is the perception of value.” Bunting believes that it needs to be done in a fun way but also reveals that the same amount of effort that goes into re-imagining an old map (like in the case of Cliffside being completely remade into a golf course) is actually the same as designing a brand new map. He believes that if a lot of care and hard work goes into a re-imagined map, it can be worth the value. “It’s not like you save time, if you do it right,” he exclaims.

To conclude, Bunting mentions, “we always do something intentionally to not take ourselves too seriously,” which is exactly how the original Nuketown came about. He also promises this very same vibe to carry over into Nuketown 2025. He does leave us with one hint, however:

“The themes of the future are ever present.”

Do you feel re-imagined maps like Nuketown 2025 are worthy of disk space when a new map could have taken its place? What did you love about the original Nuketown and what would you like to see carry over into Nuketown 2025?

If you want to get your hands on Nuketown 2025, make sure to pre-order Black Ops II before November 13th.

Modern Warfare 3 Terminal Is Coming to Xbox 360 on July 17/18 for Free, No ETA for PS3 and PC

Mark Rubin has announced that the Modern Warfare 3 version of Terminal will be released on July 17th for Elite premium members, July 18th for everyone else on Xbox 360. As we previously reported, Xbox 360 owners will receive the Modern Warfare 2 map first.

“Terminal Update MW3: Terminal went into cert[ification] at Microsoft on 7/2 and will be releasing on 7/17 for Elite Premium subscribers on Xbox 360 and 7/18 for everyone on Xbox 360 (pending MSFT Approval). Yes, it will be FREE!” reads Infinity Ward’s Mark Rubin statement on Twitter.

Theres no ETA [estimated time of arrival] for PS3 and PC as of right now, but the Microsoft exclusivity deal requires Activision to release DLC on 360 thirty days ahead so August 16/17 would be our best bet. Rubin assured that Terminal “will [release on PS3] but no date has been confirmed yet.” Also, we asked Rubin about the PC version, and he stated “PC Date still TBD [To Be Dated].”

Modern Warfare 3’s Terminal

Update: Rubin added, “More Terminal Info: PS3 and PC dates still TBD. No info there yet. Terminal is a fan favorite map that we are giving away for FREE. It’s not a part of the content calendar so isn’t one of the maps shown. Plus the content calendar is wrong at the moment anyways. There is more coming than what’s posted there.”

Are you excited to return to an updated Terminal in Modern Warfare 3’s settings?

Battlefield 3 July 4th PC Server Update Notes

Battlefield 3 players on the PC may have noticed a few little tweaks yesterday, July 4th.

DICE recently rolled out server update R27, which addressed a number of issues listed below as seen on the Battlelog:

  • You can no longer revive someone who has switched team while being dead. This prevents a case where soldiers would be resurrected into the new team while still wearing the old team’s uniform.
  • The “invisible boats” problem is fixed. We had something similar in BFBC2, and the same solution was applicable in BF3.
  • You can no longer equip the M320 Smoke grenade launcher to the underslung rail on the AUG 7. This prevents the AUG getting insanely high bullet velocity (and therefore, no discernible bullet drop).
Don’t forget about Battlefield 3’s double XP event going on right now until the 8th of July.

Thanks, Rubén Santana.

Does the FPS Genre Lack Innovation? DICE General Manager Answers

Karl Magnus Troedsson, General Manager of DICE, the studio behind Battlefield 3, believes that gamers will lose interest in the first-person genre soon if strides in innovation and technological advancements are not made.

Recently, Edge asked Troedsson what he thought about the FPS genre and whether he thinks other developers are doing what it takes to keep the genre fresh and interesting.

“The FPS is a very hardcore genre, and the hardcore crowd of the FPS is probably bigger than some other genres,” elaborates Troedsson. “And that crowd has extremely high demands on what the games are and how they develop.”

He adds “if they don’t see some kind of new, if not revolutionary then at least evolutionary, step of rendering in every game they will start to lose interest. And I think that is what’s happening. Because a lot of franchises out there don’t take this seriously; to actually make sure that we don’t just challenge ourselves on the gameplay aspect, or perhaps some other area like distribution method, but also how it [feels], how it looks and how it sounds.”

Innovation seems to have been a big part of DICE’s plan to get a strong foothold in the FPS market as their latest project, Battlefield 3, was powered by the brand new Frostbite 2 engine which has been in the development for a number of years and was built to push the limits of current-gen hardware as well as to spearhead the next generation of gaming.

However, Troedsson explains, “DICE has a strong history, for good and for bad, of doing this. We constantly bash ourselves and say, ‘We could have done that better’. It might just be a rendering feature but in the end it adds up to the complete experience of what we’re doing.”

Other than technological advancements, the setting of a game has also always been a large determining factor when it comes to reviving or boosting the relevance of any game series or franchise. Take a look, for example, at Call of Duty’s jump to the modern setting with Call of Duty 4 and what it was able to achieve. One could wonder whether or not we would be seeing as many modern shooters being pumped out these days if it weren’t for CoD4’s success. But Troedsson warns that a change of scenery cannot always be so heavily relied upon:

“I think we’re going to start seeing people moving away from the modern setting, because every now and again settings or themes start to get stale and then everyone jumps over. Y’know, at some point dinosaurs are the hottest thing and everyone is making games with dinosaurs, but there are trends. It used to be WWII, and recently it’s been the modern era and people are now moving towards near future,” as what happens to be the case with the upcoming Call of Duty title, Black Ops II.

Troedsson continues, “but it’s a bit cheap to just say, ‘Okay, we’re going to switch and go back in time or into the future and that will be innovation’. It will definitely drive the franchise forward for whatever game, but it’s not true innovation, it’s more a thematic change that has a perceived value to the gamers out there. But as a developer you can only make so many games in one particular era, and then you personally start to get a bit bored with it.”

To conclude, Troedsson states, “I think it’s our responsibility as game developers to always push ourselves when it comes to the experience of games. To always make sure that when we put games in the hands of consumers that we are proud of what we’ve done. I’m not saying we’re going to build an FPS that will make you cry, or anything like that [laughs]. But we want people to be amazed when they look at our games. And I think this is more important than becoming number one in whatever way you look at it – though naturally part of that comes from a very high level of competitiveness here within DICE. We want to make the best game that we can, and we want that game to be the best one on the market. If gamers think that, then we’ve done our job. We’re not there yet, but we’re working on it.”

Do you think the FPS genre is beginning to show signs of age? Is a change of setting enough to breathe new life into the world of FPS, or do developers need to step up their game when it comes to technological advancements? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Respawn Entertainment Will Be A No Show At Gamescom 2012

The highly anticipated title that ex-Call of Duty creators Jason West and Vince Zampella are working on will be a no show at Gamescom this year. Respawn did not attend E3 2012 either, as many multiplayer enthusiasts await any detail they can possibly grasp on this upcoming sci-fi shooter. Asked on Twitter whether the Respawn team would attend Gamescom, they replied “No, no plans to attend so far.”

Respawn Entertainment was founded in 2010 after a bad divorce between ex-Call of Duty creators and Activision. West and Zampella went on to create Respawn, which signed a publishing deal with the EA Games Label. The only current images we have of Respawn’s game are the blurry ones you can find here.

So when do you think Respawn will finally show off their debut title?

Thanks, PSLS

Modern Warfare 3 Recent and Upcoming Updates, Terminal, Game Modes, and More

Following up on the Modern Warfare 2 map Terminal “coming soon” report, and the Double XP event this weekend on both Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3 along with the ongoing DLC sale, here’s a round up of the latest Modern Warfare 3 Terminal news, updates, and more.

Terminal Information Redux

Terminal’s release date is expected to be announced this week.  I asked Executive Producer at Infinity Ward – Mark Rubin – for clarification on Twitter, and he replied back saying “I’m really hoping I can say [this week].” He went on to mention, “the date actually moved on us due to cert[ification] and so [I’m] glad I didn’t say [the release date] yet.” He revealed that they had a release date ready at the weekend, but decided not to publicly announced it at the time because of certification – the technical word for when an update has to go through numerous amount of testing and for the respective platform to decide a date for release.

As to whether exclusivity contracts would affect Terminal, the answer is ‘yes’ – the contract appears to “cover any release of content.”  Terminal will be releasing on Xbox 360 first, and that the map is currently in “certification” at Microsoft.  A Nuketown 24/7-like event for Terminal has been on the cards for Infinity Ward, but they don’t want to “burn people out of the map” – they may gradually ‘weight’ the map against the others (more probability of it showing up compared to other maps). Still unclear at this point how the map will be introduced.

Updates & Hot Fixes

There has been a small Hot Fix update for the game.  Two miscellaneous bugs have been fixed, as listed on the official forums:

  • Fix for hacked custom classes online
  • Fix for game hardlocking [freezing and resetting] by shooting a riot shield using an SMG with silencer and HAMR scope attachment

Matchmaking is to get its first change since Mark Rubin detailed that it, along with lag compensation/connectivity and Spawning, would be getting overhauls and updated due to the unpopularity of how the game decides who is host.  Previous attempts at fixing Matchmaking dependant on location of Party Host proved to be either ineffective or not thorough enough.  The Exec Producer answered a question about matchmaking and said “first one will be coming to PS3 Thursday night at roughly 2am” mentioning that this update will be a hot fix, which will help with the upcoming main patch. He went on to say “more changes [Title Update] to come, though”.  Rubin was asked if Infinity Ward is “confident” that the upcoming PS3 hot fix would work, he explained, “Well it will change things, and should improve it for many then we’ll collect data from that and make more changes.”

Face Off & Community Modes

As we reported on face off and the community deciding what game modes will be made available, the winner – Search & Destroy – made its debut last weekend on the 2v2 and 3v3 public playlists.  It has since been taken down with Mark Rubin announcing “Playlist update was just to take SnD [Search & Destroy] out of the Faceoff playlist.  Hope people had fun with it [last] weekend.” Rubin also reaffirmed that they are “working on which mode will be up for [this] weekend”.  With its removal, people have been asking him whether or not it could potenially be made as a permanent game mode in the Face Off playlists – citing that the game mode proved to be pretty popular amongst the community – Rubin responded with “[Search & Destroy and others] may come back as one of the permanent [game modes on the Face Off] playlists” and continues with “but right now we are rotating every weekend with different modes” which he later confirms in a different tweet that “[we] might be trying Dom next”, which is currently second on the poll.

When asked about their previous community poll options and the inclusion of unique modes such as MLG-styled rules and Snipers-Only, which we reported on here, Rubin stated, “no news on MLG stuff though”.  The ‘Snipers only/No Snipers’ option is currently leading, which is closely followed by ‘MLG Rules/Competitive Mode’, but it’s still unclear which mode will be featured and when.

Infinity Ward’s Position on Discounted DLC Content

An unhappy follower tweeted to the IW Exec Producer regarding the recent announcement of DLC being discounted and prices cut, and this is what he had to say (from a Developer’s Point of View):

You are actually getting a lot of content there are still many more MP maps coming.  Plus other content.  Faceoff is really popular but of course not everyone is going to like everything.  The DLC we are doing is more than we’ve ever done before.  Not just MP maps but SO missions, Faceoff maps, and other stuff that hasn’t come out.  So from a content standpoint it’s a lot of stuff.  As for the sale, that’s an Activision thing as part of a promotion and a way to give tie it in to a charity promotion for CODE.  I get that you are upset, though.  But just want to say that we are only half way thru the content.  You’ll be getting a lot for your money.

While he accepts that people may be getting upset at how their DLC is priced and released – of which is not in their control – he reassures that they are only mid-way through their Content Drop year.  While a total of 17 DLC Content has been dropped – excluding two free Face Off maps and the outside-the-DLC-model MW2 map Terminal – there is “lots more” to come.  He recently mentioned that there to be “no more Face Off maps”, and so they are currently focusing on only Spec Op missions, full multiplayer Maps and “other stuff”.

Be sure to read 50% off MW3 DLC Deal, Slap in the Face to Premium Elite Members?

Other News & Remarks

Some have wondered why the Content Calendar is rarely updated, the disgruntled Rubin explained “[the Content Calendar] is so poorly managed and I keep yelling at [the] people [who manage it; Activision PR] to keep it up to date,” but also went on to say “hoping for it to be updated soon,” as this month’s content drop will be coming up within the next few weeks.  He also got asked as to why Beachhead (the company responsible for Elite) doesn’t “embrace” the Call of Duty fans, and he replied back with “Yea I’m frustrated with that as well.  It’s their first year [working on a beta with Black Ops and fully on Modern Warfare 3] and I know they will be getting better at stuff like that [for Black Ops II].”

Rubin was asked about whether or not they are close to their “limit” (in terms of game modes), to which he stated, “Yea there is a limit [to the amount of game modes we can have at one time],” and continued “So we have do a bit of shuffling when we want to add or change.” This goes with what he has been saying the last few weeks, where a “playlist review” will be swapping out some game modes for others.  A weapons and pointstreaks “sweep” is also on their plans for the next few weeks – but no other details as to what may be getting nerfed or buffed has been announced.

Global Thermonuclear War was an unfinished and cut game mode in Modern Warfare 2. The mode incorporated a Headquarters-mixed-with-King of the Hill, with the winning team managing to hold the ‘HQ’ so they could launch a Tactical Nuke to end and win the game.  While the game mode was cut, it was still accessible on the disc and modders managed to make it available for people to play in Private Matches.  When asked if the mode would be making a reappearance for MW3, Mark mentioned he’s “not sure” because the “game mode was never finished”.

We hope you are now completely informed with what has been happening in regards to Modern Warfare 3 the last few days.  If you have any questions or comments in regards of what has just been reported or you wish us to throw a question at someone at Infinity Ward then please comment below!

Sony Acquires Game Streaming Service Gaikai

After being rumored for a while, Sony has finally announced that it has purchased the game streaming service, Gaikai. For those who are unaware of what Gaikai is, it’s pretty much a cloud base service that allows you to stream video games, similar to OnLive. This acquisition cost Sony roughly $380 million USD.

Sony has said that with this acquisition, it will be able to “deliver a world class cloud-streaming service”. This means that anyone with a supported device will be able to enjoy games with “rich graphics” to even content that caters to the casual.

“SCE has built an incredible brand with PlayStation and has earned the respect of countless millions of gamers worldwide,” said David Perry, CEO of Gaikai Inc. “We’re honored to be able to help SCE rapidly harness the power of the interactive cloud and to continue to grow their ecosystem, to empower developers with new capabilities, to dramatically improve the reach of exciting content and to bring breathtaking new experiences to users worldwide.”

So what exactly does this mean for you Playstation fans? Well as of right now, everything said is pure speculation but if all goes as they are said owners of Playstation devices will soon be able to play titles only found on PC/Xbox 360, along with a handful of first party titles without even downloading them.

50% off MW3 DLC Deal, Slap in the Face to Premium Elite Members?

Update 2 – The sale has been officially announced for all three platforms. Major Nelson seems to have jumped the gun with the announcement last week.

Update 1 – It appears that the DOTW from Major Nelson’s blog containing the 50% Off for Modern Warfare 3 DLC was removed “pending confirmation.” Hopefully, this means the information was not accurate and MW3 DLC is in fact not on sale. Who knows if it was pulled because of enough fans complaining about it, but for now the integrity of Elite is safe.

Original Story – In the slightly modified words of Rick James, what’d the 50% off DLC for MW3 say to the face of Elite premium members?  SLAP!  This upcoming week from July 3rd to July 9th, you will find MW3 DLC available for 50% off or 600 MS Points per DLC pack. For some, it’s no big deal as they had the content months ahead and got to play it first, so it was worth the premium cost. To others it shows the lack of loyalty and customer appreciation to those players who bought into the subscription model and paid full price for an Elite premium subscription.

Just to set the record straight, I did not pay for my Elite subscription as I received a free hardened edition for attending Call of Duty XP last year.  Regardless of this fact, I still find it rather disheartening to know that Activision cares so much (insert sarcasm) about this subscriber base that they wanted so badly to get on a yearly subscription for content that they then discount the DLC packs 50% just months after they were originally released. Black Ops DLC discounts… I can dig it. The game is over a year old and no more new content is coming for the game, it makes sense.

How can we, as Call of Duty fans and enthusiasts, have faith in this Elite subscription model when such blatant disregard for the system is shown by discounting DLC just months old for the current game with more DLC coming soon?  This doesn’t sit very well with why I should renew my subscription this upcoming year. Why pay full price for a subscription when I could just wait a couple months and get the DLC for 50% off?  I just feel this sets a very bad precedent of what kind of priority premium members are to the video game giant. The way the hardened Black Ops zombies maps were handled last year was perfect. They held out for nearly the full life cycle of the game giving great justification for paying for them up front and even when they were released, they weren’t free or at a discount, you had to pay full price.

Am I off my rocker or do you guys agree that giving discounts on the MW3 DLC this soon just shows there’s no reason to buy into the Elite subscription model? Do you feel like you have a hand print on your cheek?
