More on Spotting, Music in Multiplayer and BF3 Soundtracks – DICE Talks Sound Design

Frostbite 2 is a humongous and über complex engine with mind boggling flexibility. Nobody will ever know everything about it,” said Tomas Danko, voice-over producer at DICE, on his Twitter account late last night. The improvements over Frostbite 1, used in Battlefield: Bad Company, and Frostbite 1.5, used in Battlefield: 1943 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, seem to be vast indeed. DICE wants to make sure that their new engine, debuting in Battlefield 3, delivers on all fronts – graphics, gameplay and sound design. We’ve seen what Frostbite 2 is capable of in terms of graphics and gameplay via the latest trailers, but today we will be focusing particularly on the sound, something DICE’s engineers have been known for excelling at.

When asked if any of the sound engine improvements have been officially listed, Danko responded, “that would be a ridiculously long list, so no. But we are slowly documenting it. I’ll document my VO System next year.” Fans also curious about the music of BF3 were assured that “hopefully [DICE] will release a BF3 soundtrack post launch.” He continued, “…it’s all original music. We should release a CD afterwards, we usually do.” It was also asked if some of the music would be heard in the multiplayer. Danko answered, “there will be some music in MP, but not vehicle related. The new music is less irritating.

Voice-overs in Battlefield games are extremely important for communications, especially if players really want to work together as a team. Not everyone plays with a headset, so it’s important that there are different in-game audio cues for each situation that a player could run into. Players need to know if a nearby enemy has been taken out by your teammate, or if someone on your team needs ammo (if you are playing as a class that can supply ammo) for example. If you’d like to know roughly how much time and energy is put into DICE’s VO design, Danko revealed that they “have 170 medic-related, 190 medkit-related & 227 revive/heal-related VO lines for MP in BF3” alone.

In-game voice overs are also very important for spotting enemies or enemy vehicles. You may not always be paying attention to the mini-map enough to see that your teammate has spotted an enemy. That’s why DICE has made sure that you can at least hear when an enemy or vehicle has been spotted. For example, jets are now a flyable vehicle in Battlefield 3 again and Danko assured us that “yes, you can spot a jet and hear corresponding dialogue (‘jet’ or ‘fast mover’).” Danko also commented on the differences between spotting in co-op mode, and multiplater. “Spotting in COOP is only over radio, unlike MP by the way.” By the way, check out our article on how spotting has been fixed in Battlefield 3.

Some players were put off by the offensive, or just plain silly comments said after a soldier died in BFBC2. Danko assured us that this issue has been addressed in their next game. “[Soldiers] sound pro & focused now, and none of that “boo-yah!” s*** & derogatory cheering when people die. I don’t want that in BF3.

When asked what Danko’s favourite VO line was so far, he replied, “ ‘I’m getting my s*** pushed in!’ is one of my all-time favorites in MP.

MW3 Didn’t Copy BF3, What Brings Fans Back to CoD, and more – Sledgehammer Games On MW3

For those of you who think that only Infinity Ward and Treyarch work on the Call of Duty franchise, you should know that Sledgehammer Games are developing Modern Warfare 3 side by side with Infinity Ward. Today, we have found some interesting things that Glen Scholfield and Michael Condrey, the co-founders of Sledgehammer Games, said about Modern Warfare 3.

When a fan claimed that Modern Warfare 3 is copying Battlefield 3, Scholfield answered “We (the people behind MW3) haven’t copied BF3 at all. No need to and never seen much of it. We’re making the sequal to MW2, that’s what we look at.” Of course, MP1st’s loyal readers might recall that Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling has only played about an hour of Battlefield 3 and loved it.

On another note, in a recent interview with NowGamer, when asked about the competition with the Battlefield 3, Condrey explained that he shares Eric Hirshberg’s thoughts, which you can find here. He went on to  shed some light on what brings gamers back to Call of Duty by stating“It (Call of Duty) is fun, it’s fast, it’s 60 frames per second.” He explained “what 60 fps mean is it feels smooth, you’re in the action right away.” He ended his point with “I think that’s what’s been bringing fans back time and time again to Call of Duty.”

When asked, on twitter, on whether the premium Elite service has anything to do with Dedicated servers on PC. Condrey reassured that “(dedicated servers are) free to all PC. Independent of Elite.”

Killcams in Battlefield 3 – An Unwelcome Feature?

In a recent Q&A session with DICE representatives at GameCon 2011, it was confirmed that a killcam feature would indeed be included in Battlefield 3. This has been a hot topic among gamers recently and I can see why.

But first, a killcam in a first-person-shooter, for those who don’t know, is a quick replay on your screen of what your enemy saw moments before he shot you dead. It was an idea that became extremely popular during the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and many developers since then have included it in their own shooters, or a least a version of it. Lately, Crysis 2 did cut-and-paste job with their “kill replay”, while Homefront was a little more original in that the camera panned up to your enemy after you died, revealing his location.

The reason the killcam has become such a controversial idea is because it is a feature that could potentially make or break an FPS, or any shooter for that matter. Give away too much enemy intel and it could provide little challenge to some players. Give no information at all and it could prove frustrating for players who constantly find themselves in a death-streak due to an unknown enemy position.

There are also many other factors that play into this. If I took Crysis 2 for example, you will find that it’s multiplayer is quite fast-paced. Crytek, the developers of Crysis 2, gave player characters the ability to move much like a free-runner or parkour practitioner in real life (but obviously with the added advantage of alien nanosuit technology). Players had the ability to slide under objects, grab and quickly climb ledges, and power jump great distances. With all this freedom of movement, there was very little incentive to stay in one spot or ‘camp’. This led to many players either using the sub-machine guns or assault rifles to adequately deal with all these fast-moving soldiers on the battlefield. Sniper rifles were fairly uncommon in Crysis 2’s multiplayer. For these reasons, I personally felt that a killcam or kill replay was unnecessary. If I was shot dead by an enemy, it was very rare that that same enemy would stick to the same location after I re-spawned. Most players were constantly on the move. Another factor that played into this opinion is that Crysis 2 actually featured some very well thought out level design. There weren’t many hiding places and most sniper perches were easily accessed through multiple flanking routes. Again, offering little incentive to stay in one place for too long.

In contrast, another game that I thought could have really used a full-on killcam was DICE’s multiplayer component to the recent Medal of Honor. If you tried hard enough, it was completely feasible to spend an entire match in one hiding spot with a high powered sniper rifle. The choke points in the level design were numerous. Some moments, it was almost suicide to enter a corridor or an entrance way when most of the time, an enemy sniper already has the shot lined up. With the many nooks and crannies which served as hiding spots that were present on many of the maps, it was extremely frustrating to be shot dead, completely unaware from which direction, and only have the game tell you your killer’s name and what he killed you with. Being on the other side of this situation, I found it absurd that on some maps, I could view a large portion of the map with my sniper rifle through a minuscule crack between two crates. It made it almost impossible for enemies to realize where I was shooting from. In general, I felt that Medal of Honor gave too many advantages to the sniper class. Having a killcam, in my opinion, would have added much more balance to the game.

Back to the Battlefield series. Battlefield 2 had no killcam and some searching on the US and UK EA forums told me that many fans were okay with it and enjoyed BF2 the way it was. I personally enjoyed the version of the kill cam used in Battlefield: Bad Company 2. I thought it provided a good balance to all the bush wookie, spawn campers. Since the camera was always in front of your enemy, it never completely gave away his position since you couldn’t see his point of view. It was a good balance between revealing too much or too little. As for Battlefield 3, it seems like DICE has provided at least a little bit of a counter to campers with the new scope glint feature. Currently, if an enemy with a high powered scope has you in their sights, you should be able to spot them with the reflection that will shine off their scope lens. Perhaps leaving out a killcam in this case could be justifiable. However, this glint feature only covers those classes with sniper scopes attached to their weapon and not those using an ACOG or red dot sight on a battle rifle or assault rifle.

Again, DICE has at least left the option to turn the killcam (or what ever they will call it in the the final product) off on the normal, non-hardcore mode. If it’s included, would you prefer a CoD-style killcam, or something more like BF:BC2? Or, do you think it should be permanently removed all together? After all, DICE did say that this game is to be the true sequel to Battlefield 2.

Battlefield 3 Recon Class to Set Spawn Points?

Do we have juicy new information on Battlefield 3? I think so, as it seems the Battlefield 3 Recon class can set spawn points remotely.

Around 12:30am EST early Friday morning, Gustav Halling, gameplay designer at DICE, tweeted out a response to a concern regarding not being able to spawn on teammates when not in a squad in Battlefield: Bad Company 2. For the most part, it’s fairly easy to get in a squad when entering a game, but there is the odd time when, say, two squads of four are already in play and if you are the ninth person to enter the game, it’s not always possible to enter any of the already full squads. Of course, when you are playing solo, you have no option but to always spawn back at your base. Some people prefer to play by themselves, but it can be frustrating to constantly have to walk/run/drive across the whole map to get back to the action after you die.

A while back, DICE did say they wanted to make Battlefield 3 more forgiving for people who prefer to play solo, without a squad, but never said exactly how they were going to do that. As of now, I think we have a clue.

Halling’s tweet went as follows:

“…play as recon and put out a radio beacon to spawn on 🙂 Free choice for everyone!”

To me, this “radio beacon” sounds a lot like the tactical insertion equipment found in the Call of Duty series or the spawn beacon featured in Battlefield 2142. “Free choice for everyone!” This implies that perhaps your entire team can spawn on your radio beacon. Personally, this eases one concern that I had with the ‘squad leader’ role. DICE announced that squad mates could only spawn on the squad leader, but what if this leader is a terrible player and is constantly dying? Why should the entire squad be punished for the actions of one inexperienced player? I would call this “radio beacon” function a welcome feature to Battlefield 3, but those are just my thoughts. Let everyone know what you think in the comment section below!

Weapon of Choice – Battlefield 3 Weapon Customization

Today, on EA’s Battlefield Blog, DICE went into further detail regarding weapon customization. And let us tell you… it has us here at MP1st very excited.

The multiplayer weapon list has been released a few days ago and no new weapons have been confirmed since then. However DICE assured us that Battlefield 3 will “have well over 50 weapons”. And if over 50 weapons is not enough for you, DICE wants you to keep in mind that “each weapon in itself can be tailored to wildly differing play styles and combat roles.”

Each weapon has exactly three slots open for customization. First; there are your optics or sights, second; there is your exchangeable barrel, and third; there are your numerous under-barrel options. Optics will range from a quick acquisition holographic scope to a 4X magnification combat scope. Your barrel can be swapped out for a heavy barrel (most likely decreasing rate of fire but increasing damage) or can have a suppressor attached to it (most likely decreasing power at range, but masking your gunshots from the enemy). The under barrel attachments will range from a recoil steadying bipod or forgrip, underslung grenade launchers or shotguns, to flashlights or laser sights. “While the class and model of your weapon will determine a number of basic values (like muzzle speed, energy, and fire rate), you can always modify it to tweak it towards anything from long range to close quarters combat.” The best part about all of this is that you can change your load outs in-game, on the fly, anytime.

DICE also confirmed that “weapon accessory unlocks are received on a per weapon basis.” This means that if you want a completely blinged out SCAR-H, you’ll have to put some time and effort into using it.

Below are two examples of the same weapon, but customized to meet different situational needs.

What’s your play style and what weapon attachments are you most looking forward to? Leave a comment below and keep checking back to our Battlefield 3 section for all the latest news.

DICE Puts Battlefield 3 Beta Start Date Rumors to Rest

  • As expected for a mammoth title like Battlefield 3, rumors and speculation over every aspect of the game are rampant.

Lately, an old rumor on Battlefield 3’s beta release date has resurfaced. The rumor stipulates that DICE is going to launch the Beta on September 9th for Medal of Honor owners and people who preordered BF3 through EA’s Origin, and it will go live on September 11th for everyone else. However, DICE’s Daniel Matros has just put this particular rumor to bed by reassuring it is “not valid”. Further, DICE confirmed that this open beta is coming in “September at a date to be announced” and “will be available on all consoles”. In terms of who’s getting the beta, Andreas Kosh, in an interview with the Red Dragons Germany clan, has revealed that people who own Medal of Honor or preordered BF3 via Origin do have a 48 hour head start over the rest.

In case you haven’t heard, snipers rifles can’t one hit body kill in Battlefield 3.

Luckily, I own a PS3 copy of Medal of Honor and can’t wait to get a taste of Battlefield 3. And, for those of you who are worried about the fact that DICE hasn’t shown any 360 footage, all we can say is In DICE We Trust.

For a complete coverage for everything Battlefield 3 related, be sure to visit MP1st’s Battlefield 3 page.

Are you a Medal of Honor owner? Did you preorder BF3 through Origin?

No Battlefield 3 Xbox Footage Yet… But In Dice We Trust

Last week, at GamesCon 2011, DICE released footage of its developers walking the press through a demonstration of their Battlefield 3 co-operative mode, which you can view here (WARNING: mature language). Other than the amazing gameplay that was shown to us, the most interesting aspect of this footage was that we got another glimpse of Battlefield 3 on the Playstation 3. Most footage to this date has been shown on the PC. Many remarked that this demonstration looked significantly better than the PS3 version’s first reveal on the Jimmy Fallon show about two months ago, where they showed some single-player campaign footage on the PS3.

So far, DICE has shown much love to the PC fans, and then to the PS3 community, especially since they announced a free downloadable copy of Battlefield: 1943 with all copies of BF3 for PS3 owners. Favouring the PC is completely understandable considering Battlefield 3 is a direct sequel to Battlefield 2, a PC-based game. You can read DICE’s statements on this here. Being primarily an Xbox 360 gamer, I have to ask… where is the love for the Xbox 360 owners, and when do we get to see BF3 running on the Xbox?

I can’t help but feel slightly concerned that DICE is trying to hide something. Perhaps the 360 version of BF3 won’t live up to the graphical expectations of the PC and the PS3? I am leaning towards this being the case, especially with some of the rumours currently flying about.

Some unofficial sources have stated that it was announced at GDC that the PS3 version of BF3 will support SPU-based deffered shading while the Xbox 360 version will only utilize tiled-based deferred shading. I haven’t linked to any of these sources because I am not yet 100% sure that these facts are true. However, I am aware that the PS3 does have a slight graphical advantage over the 360. This is obvious with PS3 exclusive titles like Killzone 3, Uncharted 2, or God of War 3.

Luckily, I have had the chance to play Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on both the PS3 and the 360. In my experience, I felt that the PS3 version did have a slight graphical edge over the 360, however, I found the gameplay on the 360 to be slightly smoother. Could this perhaps be the case with Battlefield 3?

What’s also interesting is that this is one of the first multi-platform games who’s principle platform is the PC. From there, it will be ported to the 360 and the PS3. This is in contrast to a game like Call of Duty: Black Ops, where the 360 has typically been the leading console. Unfortunately, we all know what happened to the PS3 port of Black Ops during launch. Lets hope DICE has a smooth launch across all platforms in October. While I am anxious to know the truth about any differences regarding the three versions of Battlefield 3, I trust in DICE to provide an amazing experience for all gamers on their platform of choice.

Maybe we will finally have a chance to see Battlefield 3 on the Xbox 360 during PAX next week.

Leave your thoughts below, and don’t forget to check out our Battlefield 3 section for all the latest BF3 news. Read DICE’s comments on some of the latest BF3 information here.

Treyarch Listens to the Community – Express Playlist Tweaks Incoming

David Vonderhaar reveals further tweaks to the new express playlist.

A couple of days ago, we reported on the brand-new No Ghost and Second Chance playlist that’s been added to Black Ops. Since then the Call of Duty community expressed its satisfaction with the playlist but asked for further tweaks. The main concerns were the lack of Demolition game mode and decreasing the frequency of Capture the Flag. Earlier today, Black Ops’ Director reassured the community, “Express DOM [Domantion] and TDM [Team Deathmatch] frequency increased. DEM [Demolition] added. CTF [Capture the Flag] and HQ [Headquarters] stay, but all three [DEM, CTF, and HQ] at lower frequancy. [The update] goes into test today.”

Demo is my favorite mode in Black Ops and I’m happy to see it being added to the Express Playlist. I played a couple of games on the new playlist and I’m happy to report that it is one of the better ones in Black Ops, so for those who are on the fence, give it a go and hopefully you’ll like it. Let us know, in the comments’ section below, if you have been playing the new playlist.

BF3 No One Hit Body Kills with Snipers, More Weapon Recoil, and More – DICE Talks Guns

There has been tons of Battlefield 3 info floating around the internet this past week. Recently, DICE developers have been much more generous with specifics on weapons and other details about the game. In particular, Alan Kertz, known as Demize99 on Twitter, has revealed some interesting tidbits of info and MP1st has it all here:

When asked about the AK47 and the two M16’s, Kertz stated, “the M16A3 and M16A4 are both in the game, [this] was decided after the fact sheet was printed.” What could be the in-game difference between the two is still unknown. Perhaps they are meant for different classes? In regard to the AK47, Kertz said the “AK47 is obsolete. We have the AK74M.

Kertz also talked about weapon customization. Weapon optics were a point of interest for many fans. When asked about the recently announced enhanced night vision, Kertz stated, “the ENV is a weapon optic. It only turns on when you zoom in. There is no always on ENV. It cannot be disabled in zoom either.” In regards to side arms, Kertz said there will be “no pistol customization, but a wide variety will be available.” Kertz was also asked if all weapons could have suppressors attached to them. He answered, “not shotguns, pretty much everything else. Some are more effective than others.” He also mentioned the flashlight attachment. “Shadows play a big role, and flashlights make a big difference.

Kertz also elaborated on bullet drop saying, “gravity is the same but velocity is different giving [bullets] different drops and travel time at the same ranges.” He added, “the distances are larger so the drop has been tweaked accordingly.

Another interesting feature that was shown in the latest tailer was the scope glint on the weapon optics. Kertz informed us “glint is based on the scope. Out a high zoom scope on a AR will give glint too.” When asked about whether glint would be noticeable only if the enemy is aiming at the player or not, Kertz confirmed, “yes it’s directional.”

A hot topic about weapons that was noticeable in the leaked alpha footage was regarding the recoil. Daniel “zh1n0” Matros replied to the question of whether or not there is more weapon recoil by stating “yes, depends on what guns you pick.

One very interesting, and potentially controversial statement that Kertz made was, “there are no 1 hit body kills with sniper rifles. Pull your side arm or use a semi auto for fast follow up hits.” Do you Battlefield fans agree with this? Is it unrealistic, or does it better serve the gamepley?

Don’t forget to check our article on 3D spotting and the changes that DICE have made to it. Also, keep an eye on our Battlefield 3 section for the latest coverage.

Call of Duty 2, 3, 4 and MW2 Up to 50% Off on Xbox Live

Update: The PSN Store is holding this event as well.

Activision cuts the prices of all Call of Duty titles on the Xbox Marketplace. So, if you’re new to the Call of Duty series, you should get at least Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Personally, I prefer World at War because it was my first Call of Duty experience, and then I went back to CoD 4, but I acknowledge the fact that Modern Warfare 1 is the superior game.

Here are the prices of each game,

Call of Duty 2 $19.99 (You can find it in bargain bins for less.)

Call of Duty 3 $19.99 (You can find it in bargain bins for less. Not recommended by MP1st)

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare $19.99 (Good price. Highly recommended by MP1st; however, hold until I test how the mp is. I hear hackers are ruining it.)

Update: TDM is currently plagued with hackers. Might have better luck in objective based games.

Call of Duty: World at War $19.99 (Good price. Recommended by MP1st)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 $39.99 (Same price as Amazon. Recommended with reservations by MP1st)

DICE Fixes 3D Spotting Issue

One issue many gamers have had with Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was regarding the 3D spotting. For many, it was a welcomed feature to the game, and a nice alternative to the 2D spotting seen in many other first-person-shooters. On the other hand, there were many cases of this technique being ‘spammed’ in a way that was unintentional for DICE developers. The problem lied in the fact that it was possible to spot enemies through bushes and trees. Essentially, players didn’t have to even see the enemy, in order to be able to spot them. This was another contributing factor that led to the infamy of the “bush wookie”. A video that you can view here nicely demonstrates the said problem with 3D spotting.

Of course, this had many worried that the problem will persist in Battlefield 3. Thankfully, a representative from EA has recently commented on the situation.

…3D spotting is still there. It’s been tweaked though – the 3d marker only shows up if you can actually see the person. (But the minimap marker will show either way.) So no more sitting in a bush and blindly shooting at the glowing tortilla chips for free kills.

So there you have it. DICE is looking into the problem, and apparently has a fix for it. We’ll see it in action October 25th.

Write in the comments below! Do you agree with 3D spotting? Should it be changed to 2D?

No Ghost and Second Chance in New Express Playlist – Black Ops Patch Now Live

A new Call of Duty Black Ops patch just went live on the 360. It includes an awesome new playlist.

Treyarch has just released a Black Ops patch that preps up 360s for the Rezurrection DLC, which will release on Aug 23th. But, that’s not all the patch does, it has also added an Express Playlist, where the Ghost and Second Chance Perks are not allowed and the lobby timer between games is 30 seconds instead of a minute.

The patch has taken out the annihilation map pack category and replaced it with a class dedicated to maps from all map packs. This category includes DLC Moshpit, which is a veriety of gametypes, and DLC Hardcore, hardcore versions of gametypes only.

DICE on Why Jets and 64 Player Maps Back in Battlefield 3 – “BF3 is the True Sequel of BF2”

DICE’s Karl Magnus explains why jets and 64 player maps are coming back to Battlefield 3.

In case you’ve been living under the rock, Battlefield 3 will feature fire fighters in the multiplayer (watch the latest trailer), and the PC version of the game will have 64 player maps. In an interview with Bioware TV, Karl revealed

Battlefield 3 is the successor of Battlefield 2 that came out already in 2005, so it’s been a long time coming for us to develop the sequel. We felt that we’re going to do a true sequel to this game (Battlefield 2).  Of course, we needed to look at what we had in that game (Battlefield 2), and also listen to what the community wanted, Bringing back Jets was, basically, one of the top three things they wanted. One of the other things was definitely the return of the huge 64 player maps. It really is exciting to have 64 players at the same time playing on PC, going back to the roots of what Battlefield 2 was all about.

Karl went on to reiterate how important team play is in Battlefield 3, and how you can help your team win by reviving people, handing out ammo, repairing vehicle, and much more.

MW3 Elite Clans Can Earn Double XP Weekends – Paid Elite Members Contribute More – Clan Cap is 100

Noah Heller, Product Manager at Beachhead Studios, reveals some of Modern Warfare 3’s features.

In a recent interview, Noah Heller shed some light on the new clan system by saying,

Clans have levels so you can level your clan up. If you max out your clan’s level, you unlock a weekend of double XP for everyone in the clan.

Clans are free and paid, so you can be in the same clan with the free and premium guys. Just, the premium guys can contribute to the clan leveling up a little bit heavier.

It’s worth noting that the cap on the number of clan members is 100. It seems like paid members can pull their weight more heavily in a clan’s progress, so it’s safe to assume that the premium guys get more points towards, e.g. Double XP Weekend.

Like many multiplayer aficionados, I love double XP weekends, so this gives me one more reason to use Elite. Obviously, because I’m a part of a mp1st, a site that mainly covers multiplayer, the paid version of Elite is a must for me.

What about you? Are you going to subscribe to Elite or use the free version? Please share your thoughts in the comment section.
