Report: Sony Eyeing Acquistion of Leyou, Parent Company of Splash Damage and Warframe Devs

It looks like Sony is eyeing to acquire more video game studios, as a new report has surfaced stating that the electronics computer giant is looking to acquire Hong Kong-listed Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd.,

Just who is Leyou Holdings? It’s none other than the parent company of Splash Damage (Brink, Dirty Bomb), and Digital Extremes, which is the studio behind the hit free-to-play shooter Warframe. The report states that Sony is hoping to edge out other bidders given the company has a more solid financial footing than the other bidders.

While talks are still on-going, Leyou Holdings controlling shareholder Charles Yuk is reportedly aiming to have a buyer chosen and sign an agreement as soon as this month.

Both Leyou Holdings and Sony have declined to comment on the situation so far.

What does this mean for us gamers? Nothing just yet, given it’s not a done deal. However, if Sony does indeed acquire Leyou, does this mean Warframe will cease to exist in other platforms not branded PlayStation? Probably not, but this would give Sony Splash Damage — a studio known for making first-person shooters, which opens up a ton of possibilities.

Speaking of Warframe, the game has been confirmed to be hitting the PS5 and Xbox Series X in case you didn’t know.

Hopoo Games, the developers behind the much-acclaimed Risk of Rain series has confirmed a Hopoo games new project is underway, as the studio announced the launch of their brand new website, and with it comes a new job listing for an unannounced game.

The job listing comes from its official website, which is currently in the process of hiring new people. The first opportunity available is for one to be the lead pixel artist.

Located in Seattle, Hopoo Games has been working on passion projects since 2012 including, Risk of Rain, DEADBOLT, and most recently Risk of Rain 2. We are looking for a Lead Pixel Artist to work either remotely or in Seattle on an upcoming unannounced project.

The position would be a work from home gig, for now, considering that the studio is enforcing stay at home due to COVID-19.

In a blog post on the official Risk of Rain 2 Steam page, Hopoo confirmed that they are indeed working on another project and to stay tuned for upcoming news surrounding it. Perhaps we will see the announcement sometimes this month considering all the gaming events happening for the Summer Game Fest event. Whatever it is, it’s definitely something worth getting exciting over as the Risk of Rain series is easily one of the best rogue-like games out there. Definitely worth a play if you haven’t done so already. We’ll be sure to give an update once this title has been revealed by Hopoo Games.

Outriders Pyromancer Class Shown Off in Gameplay Spotlight Video

While we just got a new look at People Can Fly’s (Bulletstorm, Gears of War Judgement) Outriders with a look at how its campaign is shaping up early today, a new trailer has shot out and it features the Outriders Pyromancer class!

Check out over nine minutes of gameplay below where we see the Outriders Pyromancer class’ abilities, specialization in combat, skill tree and more.

About the game:

OUTRIDERS is an RPG shooter set in an original, dark and desperate sci-fi universe. As mankind bleeds out in the trenches of Enoch, you’ll create your own Outrider and embark on a journey across a hostile planet. With rich storytelling spanning a diverse world, you’ll leave behind the slums and shanty towns of the First City and traverse forests, mountains and deserts in pursuit of a mysterious signal. Combining intense gunplay with violent powers, along with an arsenal of increasingly twisted weaponry and gear-sets, OUTRIDERS offers countless hours of gameplay from one of the finest shooter studios in the industry.

Yep, playing with fire is bad, just don’t tell that guy. Outriders is set to shoot out later this year for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Call of Duty Warzone Playlist Update July 2 Released, Double XP Now Live

We just got the big Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 4 patch earlier this week, but that hasn’t stopped the studio from releasing playlist updates. Infinity Ward has released the Call of Duty Warzone playlist update July 2 server-side refresh, and it seems it only affects the free-to-play battle royale, and doesn’t have anything for multiplayer.

According to the studio, this brings the Juggernaut Royale Trios playlist into the fold!

Fight over Juggernaut armor drops in Verdansk and be the last team standing in Juggernaut Royale Trios, live now in #Warzone until Tuesday, July 7th!

In addition to the Call of Duty Warzone playlist update July 2 roll out today, the studio also released a playlist update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare last night (sadly, we were sleeping at the time it went out). The studio tweaked the multiplayer playlists and here’s what it did:

A small patch is deploying now across all platforms that fixes two issues we’ve been tracking in #ModernWarfare: Thank you for your reports and feedback!
– Fix for the Realism Moshpit playlist not rotating modes
– Fix for the CDL playlist not functioning as intended

A playlist update for #ModernWarfare is also deploying now across all platforms that:
– Removes the Shoot the Ship playlist
– Shipment (5v5) and Shoot House (8v8) are now separate playlists

Don’t forget, double XP is now live for Modern Warfare and Warzone as well! This brings double XP to progression, double XP weapon progression, and double tier earn rates!

Apex Legends Loba Tactical Issues Acknowleged by Respawn, Fix & Process Explained by Dev

While Respawn Entertainment has just released an update for Apex Legends the other day that included gameplay fixes, those playing the new Season legend Loba are most likely still annoyed at how the character’s skills aren’t exactly working as unintended. Thankfully, the Apex Legends Loba tactical issues have been acknowledged by Respawn, and what’s more, a dev from the studio even explained the process behind it.

Jason McCord, the Design Director of Apex Legends, tweeted a long explanation of the Apex Legends Loba tactical issues and what the studio is doing.

We’ve compiled all the tweets about it in one handy ready below.

Loba’s tactical doesn’t work well on large areas of World’s Edge. Since the Marble Goddess thread seemed interesting to people, I figured I’d break this down a bit and give insight to what we’re doing. (thread below: 1/11)

If you’re curious, we create giant volumes (triggers) around the cliffs on the maps to stop players from staying up there. You’ll see the out of bounds warnings if you land in these places.

We don’t want Loba teleporting up there, so her tactical will fail when it lands in one of those out of bounds triggers (or a kill trigger, at the bottom of a map). That’s expected behavior.

However, we introduced a bug in the Lost Treasures patch where her bracelet fails a lot more often but only in Worlds Edge. How?

Triggers were done a little differently in Worlds Edge. Same user facing functionality, just authored in a slightly different way.We grouped them more

No reason for that really, just a quirk of making games where some developers author content in a different way. Kings Canyons triggers aren’t grouped.

Anyway, some code changed and only broke her bracelet functionality in those specially authored triggers in WE.

So now, her bracelet flies out, touches these grouped triggers while in flight, and it counts as a fail. Usually, it would have to land in a trigger to fail.

(this isn’t *exactly* the issue, but close enough, and my brain exploded when the coder explained it to me)

It’s one of those unfortunate bugs that came from another change and affected a part of the game we weren’t testing heavily, so we didn’t catch it in time.

So our options are – ungroup the triggers in the map and reauthor them, or fix the code.
Ungrouping the triggers requires a new map compile. This can introduce new bugs, and will require a large patch.
Or fix the code issue. This also has risks.
We are going with the code fix.

Good news, it’s already fixed! Now we are testing the fix, which takes some time cuz this code touches a lot of parts of the game. And we have a US holiday on Friday, so people aren’t working then.
Realistically, middle of next week we will ship out the fix.

We talked about turning Loba off in character select, but decided that players would rather have the option to play her than not. You might have challenges to complete or be working on a badge, etc.

So anyway, that’s what’s going on there.
I enjoy giving some technical breakdowns to issues we are facing and some insight to why decisions are being made.
Hope it helps you all understand what’s going on behind the scenes.
Thanks for reading!

Once the patch is out, which McCord says is next week, we’ll be sure to let our Apex Legends readers know.

The Division 2 Next Patch Release Window, Overview and Loot Changes Detailed

In the latest The Division 2 State of the Game devstream, Ubisoft Massive talked about The Division 2 next patch release window, or what the studio calls Title Update 10.1. This is the patch that’s dropping before the big Title Update 11 hits, and while the patch notes aren’t set just yet, the studio did give an overview of some of the stuff being worked on, and when Agents should expect it.

Title Update 10.1

No specific date, but scheduled for the second half of July

Content:

  • Additional Balancing and Bugfixing
  • Mantis Bug is fixed in 10.1
  • Title Update 10.1 will also add the White House portraits for Iron Horse World First winners on each platform.
  • In TU10.1, the developers will increase the minimum item power for higher difficulties, with a slight bump for Challenging and bigger bumps for Heroic and Legendary.
  • more information next week

Title Update 11

Title Update 11 is currently in the works. Stay tuned for more details on what TU11 will bring to The Division 2.

Changes to loot after TU10

  • In TU10, the developers changed the way they decide on item power, between a minimum for each difficulty and a full god roll, which resulted in most items being more centered than skewed toward the minimum.
  • But they also wanted to increase the minimum-values for the different difficulties but that was not possible because of technical limitations
  • In TU10.1, the developers will increase the minimum item power for higher difficulties, with a slight bump for Challenging and bigger bumps for Heroic and Legendary.

Rainbow Rolls

  • This is more a loot generation than roll allocation topic
  • Nothing was changed with TU10 that there are more / fewer rainbow rolls, that is not really something they control.
  • They are looking into the systems so that they have more control over the drops and they are discussing what degree they want to impact the rolls.
  • For example when the core attribute is a red stat, that at least one other is also a red stat – that would help the player that is looking for a complete red build.
  • But there are also many other hybrid builds out there.
  • So they need to find a solution that benefits all players and all builds
  • But that will take some time and is scheduled for TU11.

Given it’s out relatively soon, we should be getting the Title Update 10.1 patch notes by next week or so.

In other The Division 2 news, the second Raid called Operation Iron Horse went live earlier this week, and you can read up on it here.

Crysis Remastered Delayed Due to Fan Backlash After Leaked Trailer

Back in April, Crytek announced the Crysis Remastered for current-gen consoles. While the Microsoft Store originally leaked that the Crysis Remastered release date was set for July 24, that apparently, isn’t happening. Today, Crytek announced the Crysis Remastered delayed news while acknwoledging another leak, which is the gameplay trailer.

Originally set to go out today, the Crysis Remastered gameplay trailer sneaked out yesterday due mixed reactions, since, well, see for yourself and remember: Crysis melted GPUs back then.

Underwhelmed? You’re not the only one. Crytek acknowledged that Crysis is known for jaw-dropping graphics and has issued the following statement regarding the delay:

Alongside it, it’s now confirmed that a Nintendo Switch version is also underway! Check out the trailer of that below.

No new release date for Crysis Remastered has been announced, but once we know more, we’ll let our readers know. Important to note that this is the campaign only. That said, let’s hope Crytek brings back Crysis multiplayer at some point since it was good fun and had a lot of innovative ideas back then.

Are you surprised at the Crysis Remastered gameplay trailer? Do you think Crytek can make the game appear to its “console-breaking” potential? Let us know your thoughts down below.

Summer Game Fest Xbox Demo Event Announced

Back in May, the Summer Game Fest was announced where gamers can expect announcements, gameplay reveals and more. Apparently, game demos can be included in that as well. Microsoft has announced the Summer Game Fest Xbox demo event that will let gamers play unreleased games!

According to Microsoft, there will be more than 60 brand-new game demos for upcoming unreleased Xbox games that gamers can check out. The Summer Game Fest Xbox demo event will run from July 21 to July 27, and there will be a special Game Fest demo tile on the Xbox One dashboard so players can see it quick. The full game list will be revealed as we get closer to July 21, and Microsoft estimates there will be 75 to 100 titles in total.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • These are not normal “game demos.” Typically, the demos you see in our Demo channel are created after the game is completed (or nearly completed) and represent the final version. Many of these demos are early, and some are for games that won’t be out for quite some time. We’ve never done this before; what that means is that you’ll get to experience these games early – some way early – which is awesome, but you should also note that these games will continue to evolve and be polished as they near release. In other words, think of these as akin to “show floor demos” and not necessarily indicative of the final product. And speaking as somebody who has worked in the industry for a while – that’s not a bad thing! In fact, being able to check out games early and then see how they evolve is freakin’ awesome!

  • These demos will only be up on the Xbox Dashboard for a week. Some might be re-published to the Demo channel later, but many will simply evaporate at the end of the week, so make sure to check them out while you can.

  • The developers would love to hear what you think. Hit them up on social media or through their websites. If you like the game – tell them! If you have constructive criticism, they would love to hear that too.

Here are some of the games being featured at ther Summer Game Fest Xbox demo event:

Cris Tales

Cris Tales: A gorgeous, indie love letter to classic JRPGs with a new perspective. Peer into the past, act in the present, and watch as your choices dynamically change the future — all on one screen as you play!

Destroy All Humans!

Destroy All Humans! The cult-classic returns! Terrorize the people of 1950’s Earth in the role of the evil alien Crypto-137. Use an assortment of alien weaponry and psychic abilities in the remake of the legendary alien invasion action adventure. Reduce cities to rubble with your flying Saucer! One giant step on mankind!

Haven

Haven: share the journey of two lovers escaped to a lost planet in a desperate attempt to stay together. You play as Yu and Kay, gliding over the grasslands of a shattered planet. The demo will give you a glimpse of the beginning of the adventure.

Hellpoint

Hellpoint: An intense action RPG taking place on Irid Novo, a derelict space station soaked in an intoxicating dark sci fi atmosphere. Fight dreadful creatures, face the Cosmic Gods and unravel their twisted story. Should the challenge be too great, play with a friend in local or online coop

Skatebird

Skatebird: Grind on bendy straws, kick-flip over staplers, and carve killer lines through cardboard and sticky tape parks. Above all else, skate birds try their best!

The Vale

EPOS GSP 300 Review – No Corners Cut

For those looking to get a gaming headset without breaking the bank, we’re here to give gamers an insight with the more affordable EPOS budget headset called the EPOS GSP 300. While we had a very positive opinion on their long-lasting wireless GPS 370 model, we decided it was a good opportunity to look at how the company treated its more budget line of headsets. Does the GSP 300 suffer from being a cheap grab for the sake of being budget? Or does it excel in expectations to offer gamers the high tier quality that EPOS promises? Read on for our EPOS GSP 300 review.

Quality at a Reasonable Price

While the GSP 300 doesn’t come with any fancy PC software what it does out of the box is nothing short of impressive. Comparing it to another budget headset I bought earlier this year for my PC, there were some stark differences in terms of overall quality. For one, the microphone — a constant issue I’ve been dealing with budget headsets is that not many know how to build them right. Either they’re too small so your voice sounds far away, or too large that it picks up everything. I suppose given their general pricing, budget headsets tend to have less care than their higher-end counterpart. The GSP 300, however, isn’t your typical budget set.

From the testings that I have done, the microphone quality is great. On my PC, users in discord chat were quick to point out just how much more clear I sounded versus my previous set. I did some voice testings of my own to be sure of this, and to my surprise, nothing sounded muffled out, nor did I sound like I was miles away. Even background noise was kept at a bare minimum thanks to the noise-canceling that the mic is equipped with. I tend to have a fan running on hotter than usual days, so it was nice to hear that it wasn’t being picked up as much during chats. I suppose the only downside is that the mic arm can only move up and down, as opposed to others that allow free-range movement.

As for sound quality, that is even more impressive as its quite up there with higher-end headsets. Similar to the sound in the GSP 370, the GSP 300 offers crystal clear audio with no muffling whatsoever. For those who are light of hearing,  you’ll be happy to know that the volume is pretty loud, even when at medium. This, coupled with the comfortable memory foam earmuffs, ensures complete closed acoustic gaming comfort that will last for hours.  I would almost say it’s too good for the price they’re asking for, but that’s what makes EPOS ahead of the competition.

Just Because It’s Wired, Doesn’t Make It Less

Seeing that the GSP 300 is an earlier iteration, there are some compromises (along with benefits) compared to the GSP 370. The major, it’s not wireless. Depending on how you feel about this, it may be a deal-breaker,  however, for console players this issue is easily resolved by plugging it directly into the controller. This is because the connection type is two 3.5mm (millimeter) plugs with an additional single adapter for consoles and other devices. Not an awful way around it if I say so myself, which beats having a USB wire running across the floor.

Additionally, because it offers 3.5mm connectivity with a single adaptor, you could plug this headset into an amplifier/mixer of your choice to reap more customizable benefits. So if you have any existing audio set-ups, chances are the GSP 300 will fit right in with its connection type. For me, I had a mixer that allowed adjustments in-game chat and game audio separately, something that wasn’t compatible with USB set.

Moving on to the build quality, it is somewhat similar to that found in the newer version. It still features a soft pad banding that rests comfortably on the wearer, along with oval-shaped cushioned ear pads. As mentioned before, the memory foam padding supplies an airtight closure around the ear that blocks a good amount of outside sound. As for the framing, it is all held together by plastic material, so it’s extremely light. I will admit the plastic does feel a bit cheap in material, though it does its job at ensuring the headset maintains its shape. The flexibility is also there, just enough to fit practically any head shape. Besides the 3.5mm plugs, there are no exposed wires for those who may have that concern.  For the style, as you can see in the image above the 300 sports a two-tone color with a matte finish. Nothing too crazy in the looks department, but that is more than made up in its performance.

A question you may have is how flexible the microphone is. While it does a great job at picking up audio, the adjustable arm only moves up and down. Meaning you don’t have much flexibility if you wanted to move it closer or further away. There is a rubbing centerpiece that bends slightly, but it typically molded back into its original shape after a few minutes. I will applaud the design for having an obvious microphone, as I have tested out other sets with full rotation, only to be confused on which side the microphone was on since they looked identical. Plus the size of it offsets the need to move it closer.

My week-long test with the GSP 300 has yielded an overly positive opinion. EPOS doesn’t cut corners, even when it comes to their older and cheaper models. Once again the company has proven to me that they are amongst the best when it comes to delivering sound and comfortability. While I love my GSP 370 wireless set, the GSP 300 is definitely a great choice for those looking for quality that won’t break the bank. It may lack the flashiness of that gamers are used to in a gaming headset, but the quality and performance are definitely there. A highly recommended starter headset for those looking to start somewhere, or for those who have been burned out on other entry headsets.

PROS

  • 3mm connection to allow support for a wide variety of electronics
  • Comfortable and durable
  • Lightweight
  • Great entry-level pricing ($100)
  • Sound quality is superb
  • The microphone clarity excels expectations

CONS

  • Microphone only has up and down movement, wish it had more flexibility

The EPOS GSP 300 is out now for $99.9 A unit was provided by EPOS Audio for review. Product tested on PC and consoles. You can read MP1st’s review and scoring policy right here.

Devolver Digital Direct Set for July 11, Guaranteed to Overpromise

Devolver Digital is back once again with their yearly satire event on the game industry with the upcoming Devolver Digital Direct!

Devolver Digital Direct will be airing on Saturday, July 11 at 12:00 PM Pacific time. The event will be hosted on Twitch with the promise of new game announcements, gameplay, and even special guests appearances.

The astonishing misuse of marketing budget will end with a few surprises and game demos available to play by the unwashed masses including Carrion, Disc Room, and an unannounced game. Maybe another game too, who can really tell where this is all leading.
Of course, we can assume that this showing will be no different than the previous when it comes to presentation. In fact, the press release itself even made a jab at companies recently hosting online gaming events. Devolver is making a big promise saying that the majority of their event will be gameplay, though don’t be surprised if the opposite happens.
This year’s showcase continues the tradition of overpromises with new game reveals, gameplay reveals, release date announcements, and special guests from the industry to help usher in these important marketing bullet points. And it’s nearly all gameplay because that’s what the youths of today demand.
We’ll be sure to cover the event and post the full video stream once it goes live.

Roguelike Souls Is a New Dark Souls Mod From Daughters of Ash Creator

A new Dark Souls mod called Roguelike Souls has been doing the rounds lately, and it seems to completely change the base game in a way that very few other mods have managed. This mod comes from the creator of the revered Daughters of Ash mod, which restored lore to complete certain storylines in Dark Souls, and add in a few new bosses, enemies, and other special encounters.

This new mod was created for streamer LobosJr, as part of his charity livestream event for St.Jude’s hospital. The mod was promised by the author as an incentive for the community reaching the donation goal of $200,000. The community more than smashed this goal, and the mod was rushed out the door for LobosJr to enjoy, and his community to enjoy watching.

The author of Roguelike Souls explained that more content was intended, but due to issues with their health it wasn’t possible to completely finish all of it. Instead, the author is considering making an update in the future, as long as the mod appeals to enough players.

Unlike Daughters of Ash, Roguelike Souls has been built to be played more than watched. The mod turns Dark Souls into a roguelike, removing the base game’s story, and instead creating a procedurally generated series of worlds. Players must work their way through the current version of the game before they die five times. Upon the fifth death, the world will reset, progress will be lost, and players will need to start again from scratch with a brand new layout.

However, in true roguelike fashion, this mod does allow some things to be retained throughout resets. Any NPCs that have been found and rescued will be permanent fixtures at Firelink Shrine for example. These NPCs provide boosts to gameplay, allowing players to progress through new worlds much faster than they could in the beginning.

The mod randomises everything in the game, from the layout of the world, to the animations on enemies and weapons. Some enemies may get lucky with a world layout, and be given fantastic speed that makes them impossible to beat. Likewise, certain weapons may see animation boosts, making them far more viable in combat. These are stats that Dark Souls players usually rely on knowing, and will really mix up the game for anyone who thinks they know it too well.

Of course, with this being a mod, it is possible to re-install and change your initial world layout if it’s too tough. You can also turn off the randomisation of some elements in the mod’s settings.

If you fancy having your butt handed to you all over again in a brand new version of Dark Souls, check out the mod’s page here.

Following yesterday’s reveal that Damian Lillard of the Portland Trailblazers will be the the cover athlete for NBA 2K21 for current-gen (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC) platforms, 2K Games has announced the NBA 2K21 next-gen cover athlete today and it’s none other than Pelicans forward, Zion Williamson.

Check out the box art and official statement and trailer for the NBA2K1 next-gen cover athlete:

“Being on the cover of NBA 2K has been a dream since I was a kid and to be the first NBA 2K21 cover athlete for the next-generation of gaming is really special. “Since the day I joined Team 2K, I’ve wanted to make an impact on basketball culture both on and off the court, and being the cover athlete for NBA 2K21 on next-gen consoles lets me do that. I can’t wait to be part of this global phenomenon and hoop with all the ballers out there on NBA 2K21.” – Zion Williamson, New Orleans Pelicans

Not only that, but on July 2 (tomorrow), 2K Games will announce the “final” cover athlete for NBA 2K21! This is the same date that the release date, pricing and pre-order bonuses will be announced as well. We’re assuming that’ll be #24, but we’ll know more tomorrow.
