Monster Hunter: World Producer Condemns Pay-to-Win Microtransactions, Says They “Create Friction”

Those worried that Monster Hunter: World will include pay-to-win loot boxes or microtransactions can rest easy, as producer Ryozo Tsujimoto has promised that there will be no pay-to-win mechanics.

In an interview with Trusted Reviews, Tsujimoto said that pay-to-win loot boxes and microtransactions would “create friction” and ruin the “harmony” between players, even in a co-op game.

This is a co-op game and you’re going out in up to four-people parties. The idea is that there’s a harmony in the four players going out and you’re going to get on well together … If you feel someone hasn’t earned what they’ve got or they’ve got a better weapon just because they paid for it and you worked for yours, that creates friction.

Even in a co-op game where it’s not pay-to-win, because we’re all on the same team, it’s like you didn’t earn that or you’ve got it and don’t know how to use it. We don’t want that for Monster Hunter. There are absolutely no plans, it’s not in the game where you can get your random crate or random loot box and get a great item or great weapon. None of the stuff that affects the gameplay is even paid for; it’s all cosmetic, just stuff that’s a bit of fun.

Tsujimoto said that the main challenge of Monster Hunter is figuring out how to beat the foe. If players get stuck on a particular boss, they shouldn’t be able to just throw money at the problem. It’s about rethinking strategies.

Even when you get to a certain wall and you’re like ‘OK, I’m 10 hours in, I suddenly have a monster I can’t beat’, it’s not about ‘well I’ll just throw a bit of money in and I’ll get better gear to do it’. What we want you to do is go back to your house and be like ‘well, I’ve been using the great sword, maybe I need to use the dual blades for this monster.

I’m sure Monster Hunter fans will be happy to hear that there are “absolutely no plans” for pay-to-win microtransactions.

Monster Hunter: World is set to release on January 26, coming to PS4 and Xbox One. A PC version will launch later this year.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Roster Has Half Its Characters Tucked Away as DLC

If you’re not a fan of video game microtransaction, you might want to look away as things are about to get very ugly. BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Arc System Works’ (Guilty Gear, Dragon Ball FighterZ) upcoming fighting game has over half its characters locked as DLC!

Unfortunately, I’m not kidding. BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle has 40 characters, but only 20 of them will be available once you purchase the fighting game. Here’s a breakdown of the character list by Reddit user Blitz_Kid_48, who’s understandably upset at how Arc System Works is handling the game.

Do not buy Blazblue Cross Tag Battle (Half of the roster is locked away as DLC)
by inPS4

In case you can’t read it, here’s what it says:

The game has 40 characters and 20 of them are locked away as DLC.

YES. Half the roster is DLC. The base launcher has 10 BlazBlue Characters, 4 Persona characters and ONLY 2 RWBY characters and 4 Under Night Characters.

There are no Adachi, Terumi or any Persona 4 Ultimax characters, Heck the full investigation team isn’t even playable at launch (naoto, kanji, teddie, all the persona 3 characters etc are all locked away as DLC)

This is actually disgusting and I’m honestly 100% disappointed in Arc System Works. This is completely unacceptable in my opinion. I’m definitely passing on this game.

It is like they gave up and put everyone on Dragon Ball.

http://www.arcsystemworks.jp/portal/post-7766/

Edit: The game will be $40. Still doesn’t make the 20 characters DLC lock okay.

While the game might “just” be $40, that still doesn’t make this OK. Has something so brazen ever been attempted before? Notable games media person Jim Sterling has even made a video about it, calling the shady business practice out (might be NSFW for some).

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is set for release this June 5 on the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.

For now, there’s on word how much each character will be, but let’s hope Arc System Works’ senses are still intact and don’t price each exorbitantly.

Are you OK with games costing less at launch but the player having to buy a portion of it piecemeal?

Disney Is Releasing a New Star Wars Shooter But There’s a Catch

If Star Wars Battlefront II didn’t scratch your Star Wars video game itch, then you’re in luck! Disney, the company that owns the Star Wars IP, has released a new multiplayer shooter! However, it’s only for mobile.

Titled Star Wars: Rivals, the game will be available for iOS and Android devices. You can check gameplay below to see how it plays. Of course, it’s actual gameplay is very basic compared to Star Wars Battlefront II, and it’s more comparable to Overwatch than the Battlefront franchise.

Playable Heroes include Poe Dameron, Han Solo, Darth Vader, Finn, and Princess Leia. And given there’s Heroes, there’s abilities too! Expect Darth Vader’s Force Choke to make an appearance and other signature skills.

Of course, given this is a mobile game, there’s microtransactions in it. While the actual Heroes have to be unlocked through progression and drops, I’m sure there’s a way to expedite the process by forking over some real-world dough.

Star Wars: Rivals will be due out sometime this year, and there’s even cross-platform play, so iOS snobs and Androids whizzes can proclaim which mobile device is better or something.

If this isn’t to your liking, don’t forget, the 2005 Star Wars Battlefront 2 title is currently playable online! There’s even a new patch for it!

Would you consider playing a Star Wars mobile game such as Rivals? What do you think of the gameplay so far?

GTA Online Player Count Sets New Record 4 Years After Release

Grand Theft Auto V and its online component, Grant Theft Auto Online, is the game that just won’t die. Not only that, but the four-year old game is even breaking its own records years after release!

Over on Rockstar’s site, the developer announced 2017 was the biggest year in GTA Online history, with December seeing the GTA Online player count reach new levels like it hasn’t seen before.

We’d like to salute the population of Los Santos and Blaine County for another banner year of civic mayhem. From wild Special Vehicle Circuit and Transform Races, to illicit new revenue opportunities for your Organization in Gunrunning and Smuggler’s Run, to saving the world with your crew in The Doomsday Heist, and so much more – 2017 was the biggest year of GTA Online yet, capped off by an epic December that saw more players in the game than ever before.

Thank you to all dedicated GTA Online players worldwide – and we’ve got more treats in store for you all in the weeks ahead including new modes to experience, and vehicles to collect and race – starting with a new beast unleashed today…

The player count is no doubt buoyed by the Doomsday Heist event that kicked off last month.

Also of note, the Lampadati Viseris is now available! As well as new Double GTA$ and RP, and more!

LAMPADATI VISERIS NOW AVAILABLE

Smooth handling, chiseled good looks and salt-of the-earth engineering are all part of the allure of the Lampadati Viseris, now available at Legendary Motorsport. More than just a pretty face, the unmistakable roar of its barbaric V8 engine might just be the sweetest sound in Los Santos. Add a whole new depth of character to this charming but deadly Sports Classic with a quick trip to the Vehicle Workshop in your MOC or Avenger, where you’ll be greeted with the option to mount a pair of forward-facing machine guns.

DOUBLE GTA$ & RP ON LESTER CONTACT MISSIONS

Already busy frantically offering up work with The Doomsday Heist, Lester Crest continues to make a case for being your favorite contact with Double GTA$ & RP on ALL Lester Contact Missions. Through January 15th, look out for calls from Mr. Crest on your iFruit and earn twice your usual rate.

LAND & AIR SAVINGS

Look out for discounts both on the ground and in the sky this week, with 25% off the following through January 15th:

  • Nagasaki Ultralight (Plane)
  • Aircraft Weapons
  • Vehicle Armor
  • Headlights & Neons
  • Skirts
  • Spoilers
  • Suspension
  • Turbos

PREMIUM RACE & TIME TRIAL SCHEDULE

Ride your way to riches with this week’s Premium Race and Time Trial. Through January 15th:

  • Premium Stunt Race – “Island Hopping” Locked to Blazer Aqua
  • Time Trial – “Maze Bank Arena”

Launch Premium Races through the Quick Job App on your in-game phone or via the yellow corona at Legion Square. The top three finishers will earn GTA$ and you’ll get Triple RP regardless of where you place. To take a shot at the Time Trial, set a waypoint to the marker on your in-game map and enter via the purple corona. Beat par time and you’ll be duly rewarded with GTA$ & RP.

Surprised at just how pull GTA Online has? I’m not. I gather, if and when Rockstar implements a multiplayer component in Red Dead Redemption 2, it’ll be as successful if not more.

Upcoming PUBG Invitational Will Test eSports Compatibility, 16 Teams Compete for $50,000 Prize Pool

ESL has announced a new PUBG Invitational to take place at IEM Katowice during February 24-25. There will be 16 teams competing for the $50,000 prize pool.

The Katowice Invitational follows the gamescom and Oakland events, which were heavily criticized by viewers due to the game’s “Early Access” state. PUBG was a game which could be brutally inconsistent, making for a very uncompetitive title.

With PUBG having now been officially released with the 1.0 update, the game should be in better shape to handle a competitive challenge. At least, that’s what ESL is hoping!

“The IEM World Championship Katowice 2017 was the world’s largest esports event in history, and with PUBG’s competitive debut at IEM Oakland, we are thrilled to feature it again at such a renowned IEM event,” said Michał Blicharz, VP Pro Gaming at ESL. “Previously adding PUBG to the agenda brought a lot of excitement to the arena and we feel that it will be a great addition to the IEM Expo.”

What do you think of the latest PUBG eSports event? Will the winning team succeed because of skill? Or are there other factors to watch out for? Let us know.

In other PUBG news, Xbox has said that sales for the console version are “very big,” netcode analysis shows that the game has a big problem, and the Battle Royale Trainer is here to help players improve.

Call of Duty: WWII Sprint Out Time Won’t Be Changing, Sledgehammer Games Explains Why

Just a few days ago, Sledgehammer Games talked about the sprint out times in Call of Duty: WWII. While the studio didn’t exactly say if they were changing it, they did mention that they’re going to open up on their thought process, and game design decisions. Well, I’m here with some bad news, Call of Duty fans, as Sledgehammer Games boss Michael Condrey has written a long post explaining why the studio is not changing the COD: WWII sprint out time.

Condrey made the post over on Reddit, where he says it’s the studio’s choice that they want the gameplay to be slower, and that they don’t want something like the Dexterity perk in past CODs to be part of the current Basic Trainings since that’ll be a “crutch” perk for most.

ADS Time Out of Sprint, WW2
byu/Mcondrey inWWII

In past Call of Duty games the Dexterity perk made the ADS time out of sprint faster, in some cases +50% faster than without dexterity. This made it a crutch perk and by far the most used perk in those games. We initially had a Basic Training that offered this functionality, but found that it was once again being chosen much more often than the other options presented. When there’s a “crutch” perk like this, it results in a non-choice for players since they feel they need to take that perk or Basic Training just to be competitive. This problem was exacerbated with our Divisions CAC system which promotes a more focused playstyle through a sole, meaningful Basic Training choice rather than a multi-choice Pick system.

Additionally, a main design pillar we had in this game was “boots on the ground in a WW2 era.” That meant more than just not having boost jump and an arsenal of speed buffs; it also meant a return to an overall more strategic and slower pace of conflict. The removal of boost / thrust also gave us predictable places from which threats could appear, and a more consistent closing speed between players. The question for us became, “Do we want a crutch perk that also makes the game play faster?” Our answer was no.

Given that, we decided to make the ADS time out of sprint the same as the normal ADS time and not offer a means to make it faster. We do have the Quickdraw attachment, which makes ADS speed faster across the board and, as you can imagine, it’s super popular. A dexterity perk + quickdraw attachment “crutch combo’ just didn’t work for our design ambitions and game feel for WWII.

We have discussed a buff to ADS sprint out times for Airborne, but we already have an SMG heavy meta and we’re not convinced that’s the best option for the game. I don’t think a Dexterity Basic Training is either. Perhaps a new movement focused Division, with other trade-offs built in, would be a future option (but don’t hold us to that).

I’m sure for some people this will go down like a lead ballon. Given everything we see across all players, regions, game modes, skill levels, etc, we’re definitely listening here but not acting on any sprint out changes in the short term. Hope this update helps provide context, if nothing more.

Namaste, – Condrey

Personally, as someone who uses the Airborne Division with the SMGs as my main weapons of choice, I don’t buy Condrey’s justification of the sprint out times in COD: WWII. Maybe, increase it across the board for every Division? Have it as a gun attachment so people will need to compromise to get it? Forcing people to play one way (turtling) isn’t giving them a choice, but rather, telling them how to play — and who wants that, right?

Let’s hope health regeneration and other community requests are implemented for the greater good of the community.

Overwatch New Hero to Be “Meta Changing,” Promises Creative Director

With every new Overwatch hero comes a ton of hype and anticipation, with fans hungry for every sliver of information that they can get their hands on. Of course, Blizzard knows this, and is teasing hard about what’s to come.

In an interview with Freedo on YouTube, creative director Jeff Kaplan spoke about the new hero, describing it as “meta changing.”

“This hero is super solid, and after a playtest we always hear the comment ‘Yeah, that’s an Overwatch hero’ and ‘That’s gonna feel really great.’ It’s progressing really awesome … I think everyone is going to be really excited. I think it will be meta changing. I will go ahead and say that.”

Kaplan is promising some big things here, and it sounds like the hero is already well on its way to being implemented into the game’s PTR client. After some community trials and feedback, we’ll then see the new hero added to live servers.

In other Overwatch news, a fan-made map has attracted the attention of Blizzard, the latest version of Doomfist is still plagued with bugs, and Mercy and Junkrat got hit hard with the latest PTR update.

PUBG Region Lock Is Coming, Greene Reminds Players Complaining of Cheating

Dying to a cheater in PUBG is a horrible experience. You work hard, spending 15-20 minutes getting good loot and a couple of kills, and then you die to someone blatantly using hacks. While you can now watch a kill cam and report them, that still doesn’t refund your wasted time and spoiled enjoyment.

With the majority of cheaters based in China, as confirmed by creative director Brendan Greene and the game’s anti-cheat software Battleye, many players have been asking for PUBG to incorporate region locking. This would, for example, prevent players from China using US servers.

Over on Twitter, Greene reminded players that his team is working on a way to keep players within their own regions, by stopping those with ridiculously high pings from joining.

As we announced earlier, we are considering limiting maximum ping depending on user network status in order to establish a smooth gameplay environment and enhance server stability. Before applying the measure to all regions, we will need to fully investigate its feasibility and analyze the outcome, so we will be running a limited test. After implementation, players with a high ping difference from average ping range for the region or players connecting over long distance will not be able to connect to a match. As a result, only players in a certain ping range would be able to enjoy the game together in the same server which leads to a more stable and smooth environment. We will keep you updated on our progress as we continue looking into this method and analyzing our results.

We’ve strengthened cheat prevention measures and continue to reinforce them. We’ve also implemented various automatic and manual anti-cheat measures and thanks to all these actions have seen an estimated reduction of 65.7% in the number of players trying to use cheats. We are also continuing to actively remove banned players from our leaderboards. No online multiplayer game can remove all cheaters but we will continue to direct our best efforts towards reducing the number of cheaters as much as possible and maintaining a fair play environment.

Here’s hoping the fixes work!

In other PUBG news, Xbox has said that sales for the console version are “very big,” netcode analysis shows that the game has a big problem, and the Battle Royale Trainer is here to help players improve.

Destiny 2 Game Director Says “Snipers, Shotguns, and Fusion Rifles Need to Return to Glory”

After writing a long and detailed Destiny 2 “Development Update” post, which was published over on Bungie.net, game director Christopher Barrett took to Twitter and gave further hints at planned changes.

In a nutshell, Barrett said that Destiny 2 “needs more weapons that matter, both in power and the hunt to acquire them.” He specifically called out snipers, shotguns, and fusion rifles as needing to “return to glory.”

It’s not clear how exactly these weapons will “return to glory.” Some players are speculating the return of Primary/Special/Heavy loadouts, while others believe dramatic buffs are coming.

What changes do you want to see made to Destiny 2‘s weapons? Let us know.

Upcoming Fortnite Changes Detailed: New City, Points of Interest, Biome Improvements & More

After teasing new content via the Fortnite Battle Royale in-game menu, Epic Games has dived into more detail about what’s coming soon to the game.

In a developer update video, details of a new city, points of interest on the west side of the map, improvements to biomes, and more, were discussed.

Give the (very brief) update video a watch below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bingyo8DhMs

Eric W. talks through the upcoming map update and what you can expect from the new POIs and Biomes, in addition to some information about the Holiday Trees/Chests!

With Fortnite Battle Royale only having one map, it’s clearly important for the developers to keep adding new areas to explore, to maintain a happy player base.

If you missed this week’s Fortnite Battle Royale patch notes, let me break them down for you:

WEAPONS

The Boogie Bomb dance effect is now removed upon taking any damage. We will continue to monitor and iterate on this item’s functionality.
Changed the Boogie Bomb rarity to blue/rare to more accurately represent its true rarity.

GAMEPLAY

Fixed an issue which caused players to pass through their recently built and edited structures.

Fixed an issue which allowed sniper bullets to pass through players without applying any damage.

Fixed an animation issue caused by entering the DBNO state while in the air.

AUDIO

Increased the audible range of enemy footsteps, as well as their overall volume.

We’re aware of an issue causing footsteps to sometimes play at irregular intervals when offscreen. We’re working on a fix now, expect it next update.
Enemy footsteps are easier to hear when performing certain actions such as building, shooting, or collecting resources.

Fixed an issue which caused sniper bullet impact sounds to trigger more than once per shot.

Fixed the phantom bullet sounds that are sometimes heard throughout a match.

Adjusted the volume of the AC/DC Pickaxe.

Reduced the volume of the drone that teleports player out of each match.

UI

Fixed an issue which caused the “Push to Talk” setting to disappear from the Battle Royale settings when restoring default settings in Save the World.

Shortened a few Daily Challenge descriptions which would run off the screen in a few languages.

Daily challenge rewards are automatically collected if another challenge is completed in the same category.

For instance, if you complete a Battle Pass daily challenge but do not “collect” the reward, the reward will automatically be collected upon completing the next Battle Pass daily challenge.

GENERAL

Fortnite Battle Royale now supports NVIDIA ShadowPlay highlights on PC.
Fixed a rare Battle Royale server crash.

In other Fortnite news, Epic Games is blaming the CPU “Meltdown” flaw for the game’s downtime, the developer has acknowledged that some players are having trouble logging into their account, and the previous patch introduced a new pistol.

Prince of Persia Creator Is Trying to Revive the Franchise

Remember Prince of Persia? While Ubisoft’s “Sands of Time” trilogy resonated with gamers, the latest reboot, which launched in 2010, didn’t exactly light the gaming world on fire. Since then, we haven’t heard a peep about the franchise since.

Well, if Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner succeeds, we might be hearing of a new entry into the franchise soon. Over on Twitter, model Chrissy Teigen posted and asked if Prince of Persia “is still around” since she loved the game back then.

You know what happens when famous people tweet stuff, official developers, and accounts reply. And that’s exactly what happened. Jordan Mechner’s verified Twitter account mentioned that they are doing their best to make it happen.

Let’s hope we get a new Prince of Persia soon, and it builds on the greatness that was the Sands of Time. Preferably, they leave the angst and all that at home.

Do you think there’s room in the gaming landscape for another Prince of Persia? What sort of gameplay should it include this time?

The Official PlayStation Blog Names Its Game of the Year 2017 Winners as Voted by Readers

While 2017 is over, and officially in the books, there’s a few end-of-year stuff still petering out. One of these said stuff is Sony’s PlayStation Blog Game of the Year 2017 winners.

Important to note, the results here are based on reader votes, so there’s no bias or anything of the sort. There are “Editor’s Choice” picks as well, which are personal picks by the PS Blog staff.

PlayStation Blog 2017 Game of the Year:

Horizon Zero Dawn

PlayStation Blog 2017 Best PS4 Game (Gold):

Call of Duty: WWII

PlayStation Blog 2017 Best PS4 Game (Silver):

Assassin’s Creed Origins

PlayStation Blog 2017 Best PS4 Game (Bronze):

Persona 5

Editors’ Choice

Nier: Automata. Through all of 2017, I pretended it was going to be tough to choose my final GotY pick as megaton after megaton dropped. But it’s Nier. It was always Nier. No game can make me cry over sexy robots fighting a proxy war on an abandoned far-future Earth the way Nier Automata can.
— Justin Massongill // SIEA Social Media
Persona 5. Persona 5 threads an oddly specific gaming needle and stands as one of the most invigorating and interesting releases of the year. I was equally invested in the outlandish and increasingly elaborate Persona and boss battles as I was making new friends and finding my place as a school boy in Tokyo.
— Kristen Titus // SIEA Social Media
Horizon Zero Dawn. A big-budget blockbuster done right. Guerrilla’s post-post apocalyptic vision is compelling enough, but the superior visuals, ferocious combat, and surprising plot twists inject fresh life into the action-RPG genre.
— Sid Shuman // SIEA Social Media
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy pulls off an impressive feat: it manages to deliver some of the best writing, performances, and action moments from a franchise already overflowing with them, while at same time shaking up the Uncharted formula in thrilling, open-ended ways. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had this year, and might just be my favorite Uncharted game.
— Zac Minor // SIEA Social Media
What Remains of Edith Finch. In a year of amazing game stories, Edith Finch stands out for being a powerful narrative that is only possible in games. Each mini-story told within the game is accompanied by a unique art and gameplay style that build towards a profound emotional experience.
— Andy Yen // SIEA PS Store
For the rest of the awards, go check ’em out here.

Surprised by the winner? I’m not. As someone who played — and loved — Horizon Zero Dawn, I’d pick it as my PS4 game of the year, too.

Payday 2 Nintendo Switch Version Release Date Announced

With the success of the Nintendo Switch now at historical levels, it seems publishers are now more open to releasing “adult” content on the console. One of the titles that fits the bill is Overkill Software’s Payday 2.

During the Nintendo Direct that happened earlier today, Nintendo announced that the Payday 2 Nintendo Switch release date is on February 28, 2018! Payday 2 will cost $49.99 for Nintendo’s console, and it will have several Switch-exclusive features that include the likes of touchscreen menu support, rumble feature when shooting or throwing grenades, and even a brand new character named Joy, that will have her own weapons and mask.

Payday 2 was released back in 2013, and was a resounding success for publisher 505 Games. It involved planning and executing heists, drug trafficking and other heinous activities with different kinds of gameplay to accompany the first-person perspective.
