Two New Modern Warfare 3 Special Ops Missions Revealed? – Kill Switch and Iron Clad

It seems that the latest PC patch for Modern Warfare 3 didn’t just prepare for Collection 1, but also outed the next two spec ops missions that should be included in future content collections and Elite drops.

MP1st reader moriarty1975 tipped us off to a screenshot of the new PC achievements he posted on the PlayStation forums.  To verify the achievements added, we found through Steam Stats the achievements that the new patch included. In addition to the achievements/trophies Xbox 360 and PS3 players received in Collection 1 or Elite drop 4-6, there are two new sets of achievements for new special operation missions called “Kill Switch” and “Iron Clad.”

Premium Elite Xbox 360 owners can expect four multiplayer maps in May, so these two missions shouldn’t release next month. There are three spec ops DLC drops confirmed in June, August, and September. In total, Elite subscribers can expect 24 drops, and non-Elite will have the option to purchase four DLC packs.

You can see below all the achievements added: (achievements for Kill Switch and Iron Clad are in bold)

Destroy 6 helicopters in the “Kill Switch” Special Ops mission.

Prototype Footage of a Tactics-Based Call of Duty

As it turns out, Call of Duty was, at one point, a third person tactics-based shooter under development by game studio Vicarious Visions.

Thanks to supererannuation who was able to dig up some interesting info, we’ve discovered this prototype footage of a very different take on the Call of Duty franchise that was apparently in development by Vicarious Visions.

Sure enough, Vicarious Visions‘ Senior FX artist and animator has listed on his resume “’Call of Duty prototype’ 360, PS3 : FX artist” under “Vicarious Visions Games contributed to.”

According to superannuation, the “game was obviously never released, and briefly a thing around 2009 or so IIRC. Targeted platforms X360/PS3 etc.”

Check out the prototype footage and let us know what you think in the comments below. Do you think a more tactical, third-person Call of Duty would have been a welcome addition to the franchise?

Here are the known issues and workarounds as listed on the forums. We’ll update this piece as developers Red Storm publish more fixes.

  • Description: Some players are experiencing issues with matchmaking on the PS3, unable to find a match, or are getting placed into a match solo.

  • Status: Aware of the issue
  • Workarounds: Rebooting the console will frequently clear the issue.

Xbox 360

  • Description: It appears that some players are able to find games and join them, but at launch will then sit at the loading screen.
  • Status: Aware of the issue

Crysis 3 Will Support DirectX 11 on PC at Launch, Consoles Will be Pushed To The Limits

Crytek Community Manager Tom Ebsworth has announced that Crysis 3 will ship with DirectX 11 support.

Ebsworth recently tweeted to his followers, “Looks like it’s official, Crysis 3 will be shipping with DX11 support!” For those who may not remember, Crysis 2 did not originally include DirectX 11 support at launch but was added via an update later in the year. This, of course, greatly improved the visuals of Crysis 2 on the PC. You can check out the trailer showing off some of the fancy updates below.

As for consoles, Crytek founder Cevat Yerli stated, “Crysis 3 will push the 360 [and] PS3 to its limits, ahead of Crysis 2, but Crysis 3 PC will be clearly ahead!”

Crytek did an outstanding job with a console port of the original Crysis last year, proving that the CryEngine 3, their flagship game engine, has what it takes to make consoles, as well as PC, shine.

What platform will you be picking up Crysis 3 on? Let us know in the comments below!

Make sure to check out the recent announcement and initial details of Crysis 3.

More Halo 4 Multiplayer Details – New Armor Abilities, Ranking System, Game Modes and More

343 Industries dishes out the details of Halo 4’s highly anticipated competitive multiplayer.

Speaking to Game Informer, Lead Multiplayer Designer on Halo 4 Brad Welch details some of the new additions to Halo’s multiplayer  including a new ranking system, new armor abilities and new game modes, on top of some returning favorite features.

As many already know by now, much of Halo 4’s competitive multiplayer will be taking place on the combat deck of the UNSC Infinity, a human space vessel, inside a holographic combat simulator. Here, red and blue Spartans IVs will battle it out in combat training sessions.

Welch promises faster and smoother gameplay in Halo 4 to try to make players really feel like a super-human Spartan: “We’ve been working hard on that to try to make you feel like a super hero Spartan. I think we’ve gone back to some faster game play because of that – the move speed, the jump heights – all these things are tweaked a bit in Halo 4 and it’s all to sell the experience of being a Spartan IV.”

343 Industries has developed a new ranking system for Halo 4’s multiplayer. Players will earn what developers are calling “Spartan Points” upon each rank up. Ranking up is achieved through gaining experience. These Spartan Points can be spent to tweak your in-game equipment and loadouts. Remember that the equipment and unlocks you purchase in Halo 4 now actually have effects on the gameplay so players will have to choose their unlocks wisely. Welch also mentioned that developers found that players would develop much more interesting setups between different weapons and armor powers now that they are able to tweak their own loadouts. Welch explained, “we feel like it’s actually letting players use the entire Halo sandbox in a lot broader way then perhaps they could have in the past.”

Players will also notice that Sprint is now a base ability granted to all players regardless of their selected loadout. Developers found that since sprint was so Popular in Halo: Reach, it didn’t leave much room for experimentation and pushed aside many of the other armor abilities. Additionally, adding sprint as a base ability also contributes to upping the pace of the gameplay, something 343 Industries is obviously going for in this instalment.

A new armor ability called “Forerunner Vision” allows players to see through walls while Hologram and Active Camo are the two of the more stealthier abilities. So, some players may have to rethink their strategy of hiding in corners, waiting for their prey. Forunner Vision could be a game changer. However, Welch promises that developers are focusing on balancing all armor abilities so that each ability has a proper counter.

Halo 4 will be introducing a new free-for-all game mode called “Regicide.” Here, players will take part in your basic, every day free-for-all but with a slight twist. A player who starts earning the most kills becomes the “King” who then has a bounty placed on his head. He then becomes marked on the minimap for everyone to see, making it tougher for the top player to stay King, but at the same time, also gives him plenty of targets to shoot at. This should make for a much more interesting take on a classic game mode.

Welch wasn’t able to get into much more game mode details, but he did mention that Capture the Flag would be returning as well. In fact, all the classic modes are returning but with slight revisions. He also talked about adding supporting actions in any objective game type to help promote team play. All the traditional split-screen modes will be supported as well, including 4-player local split-screen and 2-player  split-screen online.

Welch concluded by addressing concerned, hardcore fans of the Halo franchise: “I’m sure there’s concerns about progression affecting the gameplay in Halo 4. I think, for hardcore fans, first, we’re not taking out any of the old functionality of, you know, you can set up custom games, you can play matches with the preset loadouts and weapons, that’s not going away. It’s a Halo tradition. On top of that, we’re working really hard to balance these things out – beat these elements out, making sure there’s no dominant strategies. We’ve had these things working for a long time now. We’ve been doing a lot of play testing with them and we’ll continue to do that. In this case, you’ll have to trust us. The game still feels like Halo. I think everyone who’s had a chance to play it knows that it still feels like Halo. It doesn’t feel like a different game. So, you’re just going to have to trust us on this one.”

Do you trust 343 Industries to provide fans with the best Halo multiplayer experience yet? We’ll find out November 6th, 2012, but we also want to hear from you in the comments below!

Stay tuned to MP1st on Twitter and Facebook for more Halo 4 multiplayer news!

Report – PC, Wii and Battlefield 3 Contributed to Weak Modern Warfare 3 Sales

Modern Warfare 3 sold in the month of March less than half of Black Ops’ sales in the same month last year according to a recent report. This puts Modern Warfare 3’s lifetime sales at a 4.2% disadvantage compared to Black Ops’ sales up to March last year (from November 2010 to March 2011). However, those numbers didn’t paint the complete picture.

Financial services firm Cowen and Company has cited “significantly reduced sales in the PC, Wii, and handheld versions” of Modern Warfare 3 as the reason behind what they believe a 4.6% decline in sales year-over-year, as reported by Gamasutra. In fact the firm estimates that the sales of Modern Warfare 3 on Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms are marginally up compared to Treyarch’s Black Ops year-over-year. It’s worth noting that Elite is not available to PC players, but Beachhead Studios is still working on it.

Cowen’s Vice President also noted that Modern Warfare 3 sales faced “a fairly stiff challenge” by Battlefield 3. He added that EA will widen the gap between its’ holiday shooter, Medal of Honor Warfighter, and the next Call of Duty. This, most likely, will not be the case as Warfighter will be released on October 23rd, and what rumored to be Black Ops 2 is expected to release some time in the first two weeks of November as it’s been the case with previous Call of Duty titles. Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 had a 14 day gap in between them, so history will likely repeat itself with the next two blockbusters.

Regarding the next Call of Duty, Cowen and Company has “slightly trimmed” the firm’s sales estimate for the title due to Modern Warfare 3’s latest figures. However, the firm is still confident of the ninth installment in the Call of Duty series to probably succeed. Earlier this year, Activision promised that the next Call of Duty “will bring meaningful innovation to the franchise.”

[Updated] Incoming Battlefield 3 Server Updates – DICE “Trolling” MAV Riders?

Updates to Battlefield 3 servers on both consoles and PC are on their way.

Tomorrow, April 19th, starting at 10:00am UTC, Battlefield 3’s game servers will be updated one by one throughout the span of a couple of hours. Anyone on a server during a restart will be kicked but the online multiplayer will still be available despite a few hiccups. This updated will address a number of gameplay bugs introduced in the latest title update.

Change list according to the Battlelog forums:

  • Fixed AA missiles not doing damage to vehicles moving at very high speeds
  • Fixed TV Missile doing much more damage than it should (it is no longer a 1-hit kill)
  • Tweaked tank armor strength
  • MAV elevatoring fix, round 2; proning on the MAV will now disable it

Game server stability fixes: (Updated as per Daniel Matros’ post on the Battlelog)

  • A few invalid map+gamemode combinations in maplist.txt could crash the server on startup; these combinations are now rejected instead
  • RCON vars.serverDescription was not returning anything in R20 if the string was not set; this has been changed to return “” instead
  • RCON player.onChat now reports the target player subset

If we read this correctly, is DICE “trolling” anyone attempting to MAV ride by disabling it upon laying prone on top? If so, awesome!

Make sure to read up on some other Battlefield 3 fixes in the works!

Thanks, Mark-Gee79 for the tip!

The Complete Ghost Recon Future Soldier Multiplayer Beta Guide

Ubisoft has released released a complete and comprehensive guide to the upcoming Ghost Recon Future Soldier multiplayer beta. It includes faction, class and weapon details as well as maps, game modes and other features included in the beta. Most importantly, it also features a beta timeline so you can keep track of important dates.

The beta begins tomorrow, April 19th. Click here for a list of times and further details.

Introduction as seen on Ubisoft’s official webpage.

Welcome to the Ghost Recon: Future Soldier beta! Before you get started, you need to know about a few features that make Future Soldier different from other military-themed shooters you might have played.

First, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is a squad-based tactical shooter. You won’t last long out there on your own. Firefights are quick and deadly, and if an enemy gets the drop on you, you could end up giving away your entire team’s location. Stick with your fire team, keep each other covered, and you’ll be on the road to victory.

Second, you don’t have to be great on the trigger to be your team’s most valuable asset. Completing objectives and using your skills and equipment to support your team are just as important, and often moreso, than killing the bad guys. Whether you’re gathering intel on enemy positions or keeping your team supplied with ammo, covering your buddy while he captures an objective or suppressing an enemy while a teammate circles in for the kill, you’ll be contributing to your team’s overall score, and might even end up as the team VIP.

Be sure to check out the rest of this guide to get a complete picture of what roles you can choose from, more info on how the all-important Intel System works, and tips on how to tailor your character to best suit your personal style of play. Keep your head down, and remember: only the dead fight fair!

We’ll see you in the field.

Click on images for a larger size:

Game Modes: Conflict

  • Default Time Limit: 15 minutes
  • Respawns: Enabled

Game Modes: Saboteur

  • Default Time Limit: 10 minutes
  • Respawns: Enabled
  • Rounds for Match Victory: 1

First Medal of Honor: Warfighter Multiplayer Screen Surfaces… On a Cake

Update: Thanks to MP1st reader Thomas Horsburgh, who was able to flip and clean up the image substantially, we are able to gather more details from this Medal of Honor: Warfighter multiplayer tease.

Here’s what Thomas has gathered:

  • Mini-map in the bottom left
  • Kill feed in the top right
  • Ammo count in bottom right
  • Command point & tickets in top centre
  • Unkown object in the top left
  • Snowy map

And another one of our own:

Original Story: Creative Director on Medal of Honor, Kristoffer Bergqvist, shares with fans the first screen of Warfighter’s multiplayer in action… on a cake. An FPS has never looked so tasty.

Bergqvist recently posted this picture on Twitter of a very special cake about to be cut into pieces. What makes this cake so special is that laid on top is the first ever image of Medal of Honor: Warfighter’s multiplayer.

Upon turning my computer and upside-down and risking injury to study the image in greater detail, I’ve noticed what looks to be three different symbols in the top center portion of the screen. These could be capture point/flag symbols or perhaps symbols of the different factions represented in-game. Even more interesting is that there seems to be what looks like “pointstreak” options in the upper left corner of the screen. The top right portion seems to feature a kill-feed.

Check out the image for yourself and make sure to leave any finds in the comment section below!

Rumor – Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Poster Leaked, Reveal on May 2nd?

A leaked retailer poster teases a reveal of the next Call of Duty title to take place on May 2nd, 2012.

Kotaku has recently received an image of a poster from an unnamed retailer which looks to be a tease for Treyarch’s next Call of Duty title. The poster includes the phrase “Return For Debriefing” underneath the date, “05.02.12.” As many know, the original Black Op’s campaign story was based on a debriefing session where the main character would re-live moments that the player would control as he told his story. A “return for debriefing” message such as this would suggest that the story of the next CoD title, or “Black Ops 2,” would be told in a similar fashion. The font and the background image do look rather “Black Ops,” suggesting a direct sequel to the original.

By the looks of the date included in this poster, we can hopefully expect an official reveal on May 2nd, 2012.

This date is contrary to another image leaked earlier this month suggesting a reveal on April 28th.

Click on the image for full size:

Stay tuned to MP1st on Twitter and Facebook for more details and don’t forget to catch up on some of the latest “Black Ops 2” details.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – Heat Map for de_train Released, Latest Update Notes

Developers of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive have recently released a set of heat maps for the map de_train.

For those who don’t know, a heat map is basically a diagram that shows developers (and players) exactly where the “hot spots” of a particular map are. It does this by simply painting a dot where ever a player has fired a bullet in-game. A higher density of dots means that that spot tends to see a higher number of gun fights.

This diagram accounts for 6.5 million bullets fired, according to the official Counter-Strike Blog. You can check it out for yourself and even filter the image to show stats for assault rifles, sniper rifles, terrorists and counter-terrorists.

Last Friday also saw an update to the Global Offensive beta. We’ve included the full list of update notes below. Some note worthy changes are the addition of “screen shake,” which should give players better visual feedback when firing a weapon, as well as a server browser added to the Play menu.

  • A knife kill in Arms Race now only sets you back a weapon level if you were killed by an enemy.

  • Added missing motion blur option to the Advanced Video Settings menu. The Advanced Video options have been reorganized: global shadow quality is now at the top, and the two anti-aliasing settings have been moved together.
