Modern Warfare 3 “Spawn Logic” Fix Has Arrived

Modern Warfare 3’s is set to go through an important update early tomorrow morning.

Robert Bowling, Creative Strategist at Infinity Ward, has just stated that the team will be “updating the spawn logic in Modern Warfare 3 tonight (2am PT). This will improve when / where / how you spawn.” He cleverly ended his message by saying, “goodbye revenge spawns.” No platform was specified, so we can assume that all platforms will be seeing this update.

This has been a top priority for the team behing Modern Warfare 3, as well as weapon balance, which you can read more about here.

Here’s to hoping to never be spawn trapped again!

Fix for Modern Warfare 3 Spawn Problems is Top Priority and Gun Balance Discussion

Robert Bowling has emphasized the importance of fixing the spawns in Modern Warfare 3, and he also talked about what guns might receive nerfs and buffs.

Spawn Issues

One of the major problems in Modern Warfare 3 has been the spawn logic as you might have experienced first hand like myself, or you can watch this video showcasing a guy spawn trapping the enemy team to get 144 kills in the match. Fortunately for us this hasn’t gone unnoticed by Infinity Ward. Robert Bowling has made it clear that the spawn system is “a priority” for the team. The next patch, 1.08, will be available by the end of January.

Gun Balance

Although the Type 95 received a marginal nerf a few weeks ago, the 3 burst assault rifle is still deemed to be overpowered. It’s worth mentioning that the last update to the weapon reduced the hipfire accuracy at range. When asked on whether the Type 95 will see any further changes, Robert Bowling explained that the team behind MW3 is “always looking at weapon balancing. It [Type 95] has received a minor nerf already”, but he went on to reassure that the assault rifle is still being monitored. The shotgun category is under the magnifying glass, with a “possible nerf” to the Striker and possible buffs to the other shotguns. Keep in mind that the extended mags added advantage will be addressed regradless of other changes. The FMG9 might also receive another nerf.

Treyarch Dev Talks CoD Gun Balance and Why It’s Broken

David Vonderhaar, Lead Gameplay Designer at Treyarch, has recently been talking with fans about a rather touchy subject: gun balance. He also had some very bold things to say regarding the direction Call of Duty seems to be going.

He recently asked this question on Twitter: “True or False. Perks/ Proficiencies (like Steady Aim/ Quickdraw/ Kick) interfere with gun balance; get in the way of making game competitive.” Apparently, Vonderhaar “feels like we could see greater gun diversity & less ‘OP’ weapons, if [he] could reserve those ‘properties’ to be part of the base gun.” He believes that “of course you have OP weapons if you can take any of the guns and make them fire faster, reload faster, be more accurate, and have less kick.” We can assume that an example of this could be the case of recoil-less weapons made even sturdier by proficiencies like kick. Instead, he suggests that “if every gun had the 1 or 2 things it did well and the 1 or 2 things it did poorly, you’d have better gun balance.” One fan asked if he considered the fact that perks and proficiencies might bring diversity to the game, which could level the playing field. Vonderhaar responded, “the guns don’t need Perks to be diverse. They can be diverse. Perks ensure they all have to be similar, so that the Perks don’t OP any one of the properties of the gun.”

Now, considering that proficiencies were introduced by Infinity Ward in Modern Warfare 3, could this be a critique of IW’s way of doing things? Or, perhaps even a critique of the direction Call of Duty has been going in general? It seems to be the case as Vonderhaar later boldly stated, “it’s the wrong way to think about it that’s comes from years of us abusing and conditioning you, perhaps, with crap gun tuning.” This also suggests that Treyarch’s next entry could be something a little different than what we’ve come to expect of the Call of Duty franchise.

Vonderhaar’s (much appreciative) transparency with Call of Duty fans is undoubtedly in preparation for Treyarch’s next title, be it “Iron Wolf” or “Black Ops 2.”

Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. Do you feel perks and proficiencies can potentially ruin gun balance?

Call of Duty Universe to Receive a “New Experience” Every Few Weeks

Eric Hirshberg explained what Activision has in store for Call of Duty universe.

Speaking to Wired, Activision Publishing CEO stated that the publisher is working on “the idea of giving people constant incremental playable content.” Activsion is shooting for a constant stream of content so that “you’re never more than a few weeks away from the next new experience within the Call of Duty universe.” Eric went on to add that the series “doesn’t really behave like most franchises” because the Call of Duty franchise sees “a year-round activity for a large percentage of it player population.” This is the reason why Elite came to existence.

Eric said in regards to Elite, “the nature of this kind of service requires constant iteration”. He also teased “consumers don’t yet know they want” in terms of what’s in the pipeline for Elite “because they can’t imagine it”. Regarding DLC plans for Modern Warfare 3, Eric promised fans to expect more than what Black Ops received. He stated “we want to provide DLC to people more often and also experiment with more of a variety in the forms of playable content.”

Battlefield 3 – Incoming Buffs to Burst Fire Weapons, G3A3, and Bipod

We’ve recently heard of a number of things that are on the chopping block to be nerfed in Battlefield 3. Let’s take a look at some items that Lead Gameplay Designer, Alan Kertz, is thinking of improving in the near future, perhaps in the recently revealed February patch.

It looks like Kertz will be spending a little more time on the burst fire mode of some weapons. One fan asked if the “jamming” of burst weapons are going to be patched in the next update. Kertz answered, “I don’t think it’s fixed completely, it should be improved though.” This should mainly apply to the M4A1 carbine and the M16A4 assault rifle which Kertz said “both need a bit of love.” Speaking of love, it looks like the G3A3 may be receiving some as well. “It will get love,” Kertz said to one fan asking if the G3A3 will ever be buffed.

Much of the recent “nerf” talk has mainly been surrounding the forgrip attachment in Battlefield 3. To clear up some confusion, Kertz has stated that “it’s not a global change to the foregrip, I’m simply tweaking them per weapon.” He also added that “it’s just for specific weapons, where the grip entirely removes that weapon’s downside.”

Regarding the bipods, which are also going to be receiving some buffs, Kerts mentioned that a “big part of this accessory thing is to tweak the bipods so they are more usable. I’ve made them faster now, will look into other feedback.” One fan asked if he gave any thought to assigning a key/button to deploy them. Kertz responded “…yes, I’m well aware of the request.”

What do you think needs to be buffed/nerfed, or just completely rebalanced? Let us know in the comments below and don’t forget to vote for your favorite multiplayer experience of 2011!

Battlefield 3 Patch in February, DICE Looking Into Squad Stability and Other Bugs

We finally have word of another Battlefield 3 patch on the way. While there are no official details available yet, we do have word of DICE looking into a number of bugs and issues.

Many fans are reporting troubles playing with friends in Battlefield 3. The most common issue many of you may have already experienced is having either yourself or a teammate kicked to the opposing team, even though you were in the same squad in the menus. Others are reportedly having problems simply joining a game as a squad. As we all know, teamwork is a huge part of the Battlefield 3 experience. Therefore, issues like these should be dealt with quickly. Thankfully, DICE has stated that they “are aware of squad related issues, and are working toward a fix.”

A few other fixes that should be making their way to Battlefield 3 soon:

Alan Kertz, Senior Gameplay Designer at DICE, has mentioned that he will be looking into fall damage. Many players currently find it too unforgiving. He replied, “totally on the list.” Tomas Danko, VO Producer at DICE, recently had this to say, revealing the month in which we can expect a new patch: “I just found & fixed a bug that sometimes caused opposite faction/team Radio VO to play in the deploy screen or while being dead. Feb patch.” Danko also recently talked about adding horn sounds for humvees/vodniks: “a colleague of mine fixed it but I don’t know what happened/what patch it got added to. I expected it to go live already.” There seems to be a bit of confusion regarding horns but it looks like they could be added shortly. Danko also updated fans on the incoming Comrose 2.0: “comrose is being updated to resemble the old one,” most likely referring to Battlefield 2. He also added that “a lot of other issues are being worked on. Multiplayer is still being developed.”

Of course, on top of these bugs and issues, we could possibly see some of those weapon attachment rebalances that Alan Kertz has been working on recently. You can read more details here.

So, it looks like we can hopefully expect a patch next month. If anything like before, it should appear for the PC version first and then on consoles. Make sure to stay tuned to MP1st for more details. Remember, you can follow us on Twitter and Facebook where we are also holding a BF3 dog tag giveaway!

Unreleased Map Found in Modern Warfare 3 Files?

Recently, we reported on Modern Warfare 3’s first map pack being leaked. Apparently, there is another unreleased map found in MW3’s files.

The new map in question is called “coast”. However, unlike the more polished images of the four maps leaked, this screenshot of “coast” shows the assets in an early development stage, which gives us a reason to believe that coast will not be packed in the first piece of DLC.

According to Reddit user, Fury Hunter, along with coast, he also discovered the loading screens of Call of Duty 4 maps’ Strike and Crossfire in Modern Warfare 3. This goes in line with our two month old report, CoD 4 and MW2 maps in Modern Warfare 3. Also, “Arkaden” used to be called “Plaza”. As you can see from the image below, Arkaden had a different layout.

How to Play Battlefield 3 Without a HUD and How “Skill” is Calculated

Ever wondered how to play Battlefield 3 without a HUD or wondered how your “skill” level was calculated? Keep reading to find out!

Reddit user Ruskia walks Battlefield 3 PC fans through the process of playing with out a HUD (Heads Up Display). You may have noticed some recent Battlefield 3 videos like this one showing off the beauty of Battlefield 3 without a HUD. Quite simply, one must press the tilde key (~) to open the console in-game and type in “ui.drawenable false” in order to receive the desired effect. To return it to default, simply replace “false” with “true”.

Now, this isn’t a way to actually record your gameplay. For that, you will still need some sort of recording device. DICE has yet to say any word on a “battlerecorder” or anything of the like, but we’ll make sure to keep you updated.

Many players have been wondering how exactly their “skill” is calculated in Battlefield 3. For those who don’t know, your “skill” is used to help match you up with other players at the same level during matchmaking. DICE has stated that “skill” is “a combination of KDR [kill/death ratio], time played, SPM [score per minute], wins, and several other things.” While not too specific, it should give a better idea of how it is calculated.

Update: An alternate explanation to “skill” level can be found on the Battlelog. Thanks to Raz.

Battlefield 3 Dev Defends Weapon Attachment Re-Balance

Core Gameplay Designer, Alan Kertz, discusses the re-balancing of weapon attachments with Battlefield 3 fans.

If you haven’t yet, make sure to check out some big changes to weapon balance that are in store for Battlefield 3. Here, Kertz mentions some drastic changes that may be making it’s way to weapon attachments and accessories in the near future. Of course, this has stirred up much discussion among the Battlefield 3 community and we have some of Kertz’s responses here.

Recently, Kertz followed up on his original statements. Thanks to community feedback, it seems that “accessory values will now be tweaked per weapon, instead of globally.” This means, for example, a forgrip would most likely be more effective used on a weapon with high recoil, and less effective used on an already stable weapon. This should hopefully balance out those hyper-accurate weapons like the F2000 or FAMAS with a forgrip.

To fans questioning Kertz’a design decisions, he had this to say: “static games get stale. I’m a designer, I love change, I embrace it, not for the sake but in an attempt to analyze and improve the experience.” He also mentioned that he believes “a game is a series of interesting choices. When the player stops having choices, or those choices don’t matter the game becomes less fun.” This is obviously referring to the reason why he felt these accessories needed a rebalance in the first place: choice. According to Kertz, “a great example of this is class Balance. Playtime is split almost evenly between all the classes. That’s great balance because its an interesting choice. One player may play more Assault, another more Recon, but it balances out.” He went on to say that he wishes the same for weapon balance: “I wish to see a more even spread between attachments for players who have unlocked those options.”

Do you agree with Kertz’s reasoning? Let us know in the comments below!

Big Changes To Weapon Balance In Store for Battlefield 3

Alan Kertz, Senior Gameplay Designer at DICE, has some significant weapon balance changes in mind that might be making its way to Battlefield 3 soon.

Much of this was hinted at earlier when Kertz discussed his feelings on the FAMAS assault rifle, which many players may see as over-powered. However, recently on Reddit, Kertz threw around some ideas for various weapon attachments and came up with a few suggestions. Basically, the primary goal is to “focus on improving the under performing and under used attachments.” He also mentioned he wanted to give more weight to unmodified weapons so that they will “offer the best balance of Recoil, Accuracy, and Stealth.” Based on feedback and other discussions among the community, Kertz came up with a list of changes he would like to make to weapon attachments in the future. This, however, is not guaranteed and is subject to change. Keep reading for a summary of each attachment, whether they are being nerfed or buffed, and how the developers at DICE feel they should be used.

Foregrip (Nerfed)

The forgrip’s purpose is to reduce vertical recoil by 34% while giving a -20% penalty to base accuracy while aimed down sight. Generally, it should be used for close quarter situations when firing from the hip would me much more beneficial.

Bipod (Buffed)

The Bipod is meant for players who want to take the time to set up in a good position and defend said position or objective. It will reduce horizontal and vertical recoil (percentage depending on the weapon) as well as bullet dispersion (again, depending on the weapon and ammo type).

Suppressor (Slightly Nerfed)

The Suppressor’s main function is to provide stealth (keeping the player from showing up on the minimap when firing as well as reduce sound and visual muzzle signature) as well as provide an additional 25% accuracy bonus when aiming down sight including a 10% reduction in vertical recoil, due to it’s weight. However, the drawback here will be a reduction in minimum and maximum range (not damage) as well as a -50% penalty to base accuracy when firing from the hip.

Heavy Barrel (Greatly Buffed)

The Heavy Barrel will allow players to increase their maximum range (not damage) as well as benefit from a 50% bonus to base accuracy when aimed down sight. However, due to the barrel’s weight, it will make firing from the hip -25% less accurate as well as increase the dispersion per shot by 25%.

Flash Suppressor (Greatly Buffed)

The Flash Suppressor will give players some of the benefits of the suppressor but without as many penalties. It will only provide players with a reduction in visual muzzle signature as well as a 20& reduction in vertical recoil. The penalty here will be a -20% decrease in base accuracy when firing from the hip.

Target Pointer (Unchanged)

The Target Pointer will greatly benefit those firing from the hip by providing a 33% increase in base accuracy. On top of this, it will still be able to slightly blind opponents but will also give away the players position more easily.

No Attachments

It was not mentioned in Kertz’s Reddit post, but we can assume that a base weapon would be ideal for players who wish to avoid any negatives of any attachments, provided that they feel the bare state of the weapon is fine.

Of course, feedback is not only appreciated but beneficial. What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments below.

Make sure to stay tuned to MP1st for more updates on weapon balance and attachments. You can follow us on Facebook or Twitter!

Twisted Metal Last Minute Tweaking, More on Balance and Destruction

Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe speaks out about the last weeks of Twisted Metal development.

The final code for the game has been submitted according to Jaffe, and at the moment they are preparing last minute tweaking. The most crucial thing that they are constantly re-tweaking is the pick-up items. They want to make sure to create memorable spots for pick-ups along with a way to set them up so that players aren’t constantly sitting in one spot. They are designing the pick-up to make players move around more.

In the level LA Skyline, there is a rotating rooftop. In order to get off of it, you must make sure you have enough turbo, and that you are aligned with the ramp correctly, otherwise you’ll get knocked off and receive fall damage. This is one of the areas where the team behind Twisted Metal is further tweaking so that you are getting “punished” enough, but not enough to “grief” your team mates. So far the amount of falls allowed before you die is two to three .

Environmental damage is also being tweaked so that they may be destroyed properly. For example, in LA Skyline, there is a wrecking ball that can be shot at and once destroyed it will demolish an entire Skyscraper, in which players will then be allowed to enter the fallen pieces. Areas like these are mostly blocked until you perform some sort of  environmental demolishing and are ideal locations for faction leaders. Also being adjusted is the amount of XP awarded to players. Jaffe explained that how much XP needed to rank up is currently unknown.

Also worth mentioning that the early adopters of Twisted Metal are going to receive Twisted Metal Black free of charge.

ELITE Devs Confirm MW3 DLC for Paid PS3 Members Before Regular Xbox 360 Users, ELITE PC Details

Beachhead Studios, the developers behind the Call of Duty: ELITE service, gives the final verdict on when PS3 ELITE owners will receive DLC compared to other platforms and describes the challenges of integrating ELITE with the PC.

First, there has been some confusion regarding when PS3 ELITE premium (paid) members will be receiving their DLC. Statements were made and then retracted by official sources. Recently, while an exact date has yet to be given, Beachhead Studios stated that “Premium ELITE members get DLC before non-premium.” This means “PS3 ELITE premium members get DLC before XBOX non-premium,” to be clear. To get a bit of an idea of the schedule of events, read here.

PC users may still be out of luck when it comes to the ELITE service making it to PC, but the team is working hard on the issue. They have stated to be having “internal discussions about how to refactor PC for ELITE.” For now, “the PC version of ELITE is delayed while we continue to work on security issues.” The studio has also recently commented on the issues they are currently facing: “the [PC] platform results in a lot of difficulties when it comes to competition and statistics. This is especially true due to the dedicated server support — something the community really wanted.” They continued, “please realize that this is the side effect to the many benefits you get from playing on that platform.”

Make sure to stay tuned to MP1st as an official DLC release date for PS3 ELITE Premium members and updates on ELITE for PC become available. For now, why not follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

MW3 CM Explains When to Play Battlefield 3 Vs. Modern Warfare 3

Infinity Ward’s Community Manager, Robert Bowling, breaks down what mood you need to be in to play Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3.

When it comes to the two franchises that we cover the most, Call of Duty and Battlefield, we have always stated that we appreciate each for different reasons, be it Call of Duty’s fast paced arcadey feel, or Battlefield’s immersive large scale warfare. However, we couldn’t categorize the two franchises in terms of the mindset you’re in. According to Robert Bowling, your mood dedicates what franchise you should play. “If you want to vent, Modern Warfare 3 is good for that.” On the flip side, “if you want to sit back a bit more, Battlefield 3 is good.”

Be sure to check out a complete breakdown of both franchises.

Do you think Bowling’s assessment is accurate? Or, do you have a different take?

Battlefield 3 Update: “FAMAS Is Mostly Fine,” DICE To Nerf Forgrip

Alan Kertz, Core Gameplay Designer at DICE, gives us some updates on what’s happening with the FAMAS assault rifle, recently included in the Back to Karkand expansion pack.

You may remember that we recently reported Kertz claiming that the FAMAS definitely needs to see some tweaks in the next Battlefield 3 patch. Generally, it is seen by the community as a fairly over-powered weapon with a great fire rate, and a low amount of recoil, especially with the forgrip attachment. As it turns out, it’s this forgrip attachment that specifically needs some looking into, according to Kertz, who just recently stated, “I think the FAMAS is mostly fine folks, it’s the Foregrip that eliminates too much muzzle drift.” He believes that it’s also the case with some of the other popular assault rifles, as he stated, “that’s also true on the AEK and the F2K.” This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise considering he also spoke of changes he wanted to make to weapon attachments.

As it stands, the forgrip is one of the few attachments that doesn’t have any sort of drawback or side-effect included along with it. Could we soon be seeing a nerf to the “over-powered” forgrip attachment? Let us know what you think in the comments!

Twisted Metal – Graphics Vs. Gameplay, Patch Focus, and More

David Jaffe reveals some tough decisions the developers behind Twisted Metal had to make as well as some more details of game mechanics, in-game music, and modes.

First off, Jaffe explains that DLC or changes to mechanic will not be made for Twisted Metal until they see how well the game does in sales and how well the community responds after launch. An example of a mechanics would be the ability to pick up a Juggernaut with Two Talons, which sadly did not make it into the game due to time. Instead, they will be focusing on balancing and patching any exploit that may be found in the game post-launch.

Many people on the net have been fussing about the graphics for Twisted Metal saying it doesn’t look “next-gen” or is just plain ugly for a modern game. However, David Jaffe has stated that he hopes gamers will become “wrapped” in it’s gameplay and speed. He added that everything has it’s cost/choice and the team feels that they made the right decision in the direction for Twisted Metal PS3, ensuring that it’ll be the best for both the game and it’s fans.

As for some new gameplay news, characters that use remote attacks, such as Vermin and Meat Wagon are vulnerable to attacks themselves. So, even if your controlling a remote rocket, your character will be stationed wherever it was used and can be harmed by any attacks.

If you missed the news before, David Jaffe has reconfirmed that Twisted Metal will indeed support in-game music. This comes to much relief as not many PS3 titles actually support this, so it’s good to see that Twisted Metal does.

We touched down on just some of the few modes in our last post which you can read here. In an unranked game, all 7 of these modes can be customized. It’s not clear as to what extent, but expect a new Twisted Metal video in the coming weeks explaining more on customization.

Some additional details concerning Single Player modes: Campaign, Challenge, 1V1 Endurance, Max Endurance, 1V10 Cars.

BF3 – DICE Talks Bugs and Future DLC: Snowy Maps “A Definite Possibility”

DICE comments on some of the issues that Battlefield 3 is currently facing and also answers suggestions for future DLC.

Regarding the PlayStation 3, the two obvious issues many fans are upset about are the inpust lag and VoIP. We still have no information regarding the former but DICE has recently had this to say about the VoIP issues: “we are investigating the root cause and possible solutions for PS3 VoIP. We ask for your patience while this is worked out.” It brings us to wonder if the input lag found in the PS3 version of BF3 will ever see a solution in the near future. DICE also assures us that they are looking into the bug of spawning without any weapons, which seems to be affecting all platforms. “This a known bug.” Other users are reporting a black screen appearing when starting up new maps from the Back to Karkand expansion pack. Again, DICE states, “yes, we are currently looking into a solution for this issue.”

DLC is always a popular topic among fans of any game that boasts strong post-launch support. DICE admits that a “[Tryannosaurus Warfare Pack] has definitely been a trending suggestion.” They even suggest posting it in the “Battlelog’s wish list to develop support from others.” Many fans have been asking if the recent easter eggs found in the new Back to Karkand maps can confirm some sort of dinosaur addition, but DICE states it is “just rumors.” This also most likely applies to the hints towards a Battlefield 2143 expansion pack as well. Other fans have suggested some sort of snow-themed map pack including unlockable camouflages. To many, this may seem like a reasonable suggestion considering there are no snow-covered maps in Battlefield 3, something that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 did quite well. However, DICE stated that “that’s a definite possibility!” (Now, wouldn’t it be nice if DICE released some sort of snow-covered map as a holiday gift? Here’s to hoping.)

It’s always nice to speculate about future DLC, but let’s hope that these issues that Battlefield 3 is currently facing can be resolved quickly. But, how about them snowy maps? Do you miss them?
