Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Review: Not So Wonderful (PS5)

Tiny Tina has always been one of my favorite characters in the Borderlands games — a child that is not only obsessed with blowing things up, but gets an almost euphoric glee from it has always been endlessly entertaining. I really loved the first two Borderlands games (the third, not so much), so one would assume that a spin-off with Tiny Tina and the loot-based gameplay hook infused with magic casting seemed like it was right up my alley. And for the first half of my time with Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, I found myself back in the rhythm and was hooked on the loop. Unfortunately, a series of bugs, and design decisions caused my enjoyment to fall right off a cliff.

A Friendly Game

The framing device for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is Tiny Tina (the prolific Ashely Burch) is a dungeon master for the Borderlands version of Dungeon’s and Dragons, “Bunkers and Badasses.” I played the “newbie” to the party, taking on the role of the “Fatemaker” tasked with taking down the Dragon Lord (Will Arnett), the big bad of this campaign. The story is actually the best part of the game, as the writers use this set-up to reveal things and Tiny Tina’s personality and why she is the way she is. I genuinely enjoyed how this played out and how The Dragon Lord was more than just the made up bad guy for me to fight. There’s a history that is revealed throughout the game that gave it more personal and relatable stakes and speaks to a theme of the creator and the created in art that I found very compelling.

Along for the ride are Valentine (Andy Samberg) and robot Frette (Wanda Sykes who can make reading a phone book out loud interesting simply through her intonation) who offer commentary on the events of the game as I progressed through the story.

So while the story itself I found to be good, the dialogue is not. Look, I get that humor is entirely subjective so if you find people that speak in meme and things like “Princess Buttstallion” funny, you’re going to get a lot of mileage from the “jokes” in this game. Unfortunately for me, I do not, so the humor got old — fast. Not to mention The Newbie repeats the same, unfunny things over and over again over the course of my 30+ hours to complete the campaign. Things like “Who knew heroing would require so much math?” and “I’m not lost, I just don’t like maps” are not my idea of comedy. And again, subjective. If you’re into this, you’re going to enjoy all of it.

All About the Loot Loop

Gameplay wise Tina Tina’s Wonderlands is Borderlands through and through. Shoot enemies, kill enemies, loot enemies. As per usually, the higher tier the weapon the cooler it’s effects are. My personal favorite is any gun that you throw away to reload and it creates a tornado of daggers upon impact which does additional damage on top of your base. It’s a formula that has always worked for these games, and by and large, it works here. In place of grenades this time are spells, they have the same kind of status effects grenades have in the previous games, but are infinitely more fun to use. Pulling the moon down on top of enemies as they get sucked into its gravitational pull is wildly satisfying. As is throwing an electrified bird at enemies to give them bolt damage over time. There are all manner of spells and based on the procedurally generated nature of the status and bonuses of weapons, I can’t imagine the time it would take to try and exhaust every possible permutation.

And like any loot-based game, there are different tiers. Here it’s “common,” “uncommon,” “rare,” “epic” and “legendary.” I don’t know if it was just a string of bad RNG that lasted for about 25 hours of my 30 hours or so playthrough, but I rarely found anything that I truly loved using, and when I did, I stuck with it way beyond its usefulness. I was using guns I found at level 20 well into the endgame. The same went for shields. I used a 1200 capacity shield for about 12 levels before I found something better. It really sucked the fun out of the gameplay loop for me when basically everything I found was just money since I sold everything. My buddy, whom I played with for a few story and side quests, found the coolest guns and spells througout that would just melt enemies much quicker than I could. So clearly it’s not a game issue overall but rather my unfortunate RNG. That said, it still impacted my experience negatively because I eventually stopped doing side missions since I never felt the rewards would be worth it.

Forced Diversions

Which brings me to my biggest issue with the game. If you stop engaging with the side content, the game straight up tells you that you’re underleveled for certain story areas. So while it gives you the option to proceed, the only other option is to do the side content. If a game is fun enough and the rewards are good enough, sure. But in my experience with the game, the side content wasn’t worth it for anything other than to level up and in a loot-based game, that just isn’t enough. If I felt like it was worth my time to go off the critical path, I would have. I just didn’t. So I had to trudge through, beating my head against a few bosses that just weren’t doable with my current weapons. Thus, I had to go back into the overworld and do some side quests. You might be reading this and saying, “Yeah, duh. That’s the game” and you may be correct. However, the game wasn’t offering me enough incentive to want to do that and being forced to do it in order to see the game through just rubbed me the wrong way and tainted the entire last third of my experience.

And none of my frustrations were helped by the amount of bugs I experienced in the game. Beyond terrible connection issues, my quest log would simply just be empty at times, despite having a ton of side quests and a main quest to do. Other times a message regarding my online status would appear on the left side of the screen and wouldn’t go away until I completely quit out and closed the game. I had NPCs stop doing whatever it is they were supposed to be doing so I would have to fast travel out and back to get them to start going forward. I can put up with bugs if I’m really enjoying a game but by the time I go towards the end all of this was death by 1000 cuts.

I can’t say I didn’t enjoy all of my time with Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, because I did enjoy quite a bit of it. And when they patch out the bugs I’m sure it will be a much better experience. Unfortunately, the things I butted heads with that are inherent to the design of the game sapped all of the joy out of it and by the time I finished the campaign, I just wanted to be done with it and move on to something else.

Score: 6.5/10

Pros:

  • Tiny Tina’s fleshing out as a character is well done.
  • The gunplay and spell casting is as fun as it has ever been in Borderlands.
  • Finding new loot you want to use is still a great feeling.

Cons:

  • Try as it might, it’s never as funny as it thinks it is.
  • The RNG for loot can be terrible.
  • More or less forces you to engage with side quests despite the rewards not really being worth it.
  • Annoying bugs that require you to close out and restart the game.

TT Games’ LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is not only a LEGO game based on Star Wars, its one that houses the entire film franchise’s theatrical releases. While the game is already packed with content, there are also characters, ships and more that players can only obtain via codes! Thanks to the game’s community, we have a long list of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga in-game codes that grant you free charactrs and ships!

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga In-Game Codes List for Characters Ships and More:

Note that some of the codes below are even exclusive to the LEGO Star Wars subreddit, even!

If you want the completionist experience, everything can be unlocked without codes EXCEPT the Holiday Special stuff, so you won’t “skip” any content by entering the HS codes.

Note : If a ship need you to enter its code to unlock, it will prompt you to do so.

All codes known at this moment :

Holiday Special :

  • C-3P0 (Holiday Special) : C3PHOHO
  • Darth Vader (Holiday Special) : WROSHYR
  • D-O (Holiday Special) : TIPYIPS
  • GNK Droid (Holiday Special) : LIFEDAY
  • Itchy (Holiday Special) : WOOKIEE

Can you also unlock the ships through gameplay?

I can confirm that when you buy the rumor on how to get the razor crest it says “enter the correct UNLOCK CODE on the EXTAR tab”

Chances are, this list will only get bigger! We’ll update it as more are know, but you can keep tabs by following the Reddit thread for it, too. If you haven’t bought or have no intention of getting The Skywalker Saga, that’s a huge mistake, as our review gave it an impressive 9.5/10, and calls it, “The Skywalker Saga feels amazing. From top to bottom, The Skywalker Saga is a near-perfect game that checks all the boxes for a Star Wars fan and is one of the best games of the year.”

Thanks, Gaeus21!

Apex Legends April 5 Update Adds Drop-Off to Regular Arenas Rotation (Update)

Legends, Respawn Entertainment has released the Apex Legends April 5 update today! This is a server-side update, which means no download is required. Note that Respawn released a client-side patch yesterday, though it seems the two are not connected in any way.

Apex Legends April 5 Update Patch Notes:

Update: Respawn has rolled out another small, server-side update:

Here’s the announcement from Respawn Entertainment regarding today’s patch:

We just pushed a small update to@PlayApex:
-Rampart is now temporarily unavailable in the Firing Range
-Drop-Off has been added to the regular Arenas rotation

That seems to be it for this patch. Those encountering a 70 field-of-view (FOV) lock for Bangalore after completing her story event, a fix is planned for next week!

For those completing Bangalore’s story event in @playapex: after completion, your FOV may lock at 70 until you restart the game. We have a fix for this planned for next week’s patch.

Carry on, legends.

Once that patch is out, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint End of New Content Support Announced by Ubisoft

Those playing Ghost Recon Breakpont and looking forward to new content, that, sadly won’t be happening anytime soon, as Ubisoft has announced the Ghost Recon Breakpoint end of new content support.

The news was delivered just today by the devs who penned a letter to the community:

Image

Hey Ghosts, First, we just want to say thank you for all the love and support you have brought to the game.

During the past 2 years, we released more than 11 Updates and supported several unique initiatives. From the Ghost Experience, the return of Al Teammates, Special Operations with Sam Fisher; working with R6 operators in Operation Amber Sky, and lastly our “Plant a Tree project” we have been hard at work to add extra content for Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

The last four months marked the release of our final piece of content: the brand new Operation Motherland mode, tons of new items including 20th anniversary iconic outfits and Quartz items for Ghost Recon Breakpoint. We will continue to maintain our servers for both Ghost Recon Wildlands and Ghost Recon Breakpoint and we truly hope you will continue to enjoy the game and have fun playing in solo or co-op with your friends.

From the entire Ghost Recon team, we want to thank you again for your continued support and love you have for the franchise. The feedback you’ve given for Ghost Recon Breakpoint has been instrumental and will help shape the future of the franchise.

Until next time, Ghosts.

This is definitely a bummer, but let’s hope that Ubisoft brings a renewed focus to the franchise’s next iteration (if there is one). While Breakpoint ‘s new content support is ending, Ubisoft’s other third-person shooter, The Division 2, is getting more support! Not only are multiple updates planned for this year, but Ubisoft has even given gamers a look at the new game mode coming to the game in Season 9.

Rainbow Six Mobile Announced in New Trailer, Over 3 Years in Development

Ubisoft has officially announced Rainbow Six Mobile (tagged by the publisher as R6M), and there’s an announcement trailer for it too, alongside a letter by the dev team stating that they have been making the game for over three years now.

Here are the important bits from the studio’s message to the players:

The dev team behind Rainbow Six Mobile’s production is based in Montreal. While we may share the same office with our colleagues from the Siege team, we are our own unique team composed of veterans from both the AAA console and mobile game worlds. We are an independent team built from the ground up and solely focused on developing Rainbow Six Mobile. Siege players have nothing to fear: the Siege dev team continues to be fully staffed and committed to their own great game!

At first glance, many people might see Rainbow Six Mobile and think it looks incredibly similar to Siege, which is great! At its heart, Rainbow Six Mobile is a competitive and tactical FPS game with two teams of 5 – Attackers and Defenders. While the core gameplay, characters, and maps may share similarities with Siege, we’ve rebuilt everything from the ground up with mobile usability in mind. We have put a lot of work under the hood to adapt the Siege experience for mobile devices. This includes an entirely new gameplay control system developed specifically for mobile and extensive optimization of the UI and in-game visual presentation.

Finally, we wanted to say a word to the Siege fans out there: our goal is not to have you stop playing on PC or console and switch to mobile. We know there is nothing like the adrenaline rush of a close Siege match on the big screen or the precision of a mouse and keyboard. Since we can’t carry our monitors with us everywhere, Rainbow Six Mobile will give you the opportunity to play the game you love in short, accessible bursts, while also enabling millions of new players to get the R6 experience.

After over 3 years of development, we felt it was the right moment to announce the game and start testing with real players. Our objective is to develop the best R6 experience on mobile, and we can only do that with the community’s help. And honestly, the team can’t wait to get our game into players’ hands!

In the upcoming weeks, we will start running the first of many live tests and will be asking for your feedback on how we can improve the game. You can already sign up on our website for information on the upcoming closed alpha. You can also follow us on DiscordTwitterYouTube, and Facebook to get all the latest updates about Rainbow Six Mobile and chat with our devs and Community Managers.

Is this something that will make console gamers take up mobile gaming for shooters? We can’t say for sure, but at least the brand is evolving, right?

SMITE Update 12.09 Brings Bonus Update 9.3 This April 5

Hi-Rez Studios has released SMITE update 12.09 patch, and this is the Divine Deity Bonus Update 9.3 patch! This a bonus update, so don’t expect anything major, but there are new god skins, and new gameplay tweaks as well. Read on for the SMITE April 5 patch notes below.

SMITE Update 12.09 Patch Notes | SMITE April 5 Patch Notes | SMITE Bonus Update 9.3 Patch Notes:

BONUS BALANCE (LIVE APRIL 5)

Gods

Earlier we announced that we are changing our update reveal plans to make the announcements closer to the actual releases. This also has an effect on bonus balance which is displayed here in our first bonus update of the new schedule. We will continue to launch bonus balance in the middle point between each main update. This is unchanged. No dev milestones or timelines are being changed, only the times at which we reveal the information to players. Due to the timing change, bonus balance will no longer appear on any main patch shows video streams. Instead, a text based explanation or a different piece of video content with a game designer explaining the changes will be provided. This is something we will continue to discuss and iterate on in the following updates. Bonus Balance update notes and dev commentary will be released very close to the launch of the bonus update, likely the day before or the day of the launch. This specific bonus balance update is handled a little differently since it takes place during the transition period. Because of this – it’s going to be a smaller bonus update than usual (but a larger main update ) – it’s going to focus on the 2 highest performing gods – and there will only be this text based explanation.
BASTET
We are implementing some significant nerfs for Bastet, who is still performing quite well in all game modes. Pounce is one of her highest damage abilities, as well as one of the most powerful leaps in the game. This cooldown is increasing until she ranks it up fully to limit her burst and mobility. Razor Whip is also being nerfed but specifically for the late game, which will mostly affect enemy god pvp damage. Bastet historically had a very slow jungle clear which kept her from being played, so we avoided nerfing the level 1 damage on this ability.

POUNCE
  • Increased Cooldown from 12s to 14/13.5/13/12.5/12

RAZOR WHIP
  • Decreased Damage per Tick from 30/50/70/90/110 to 30/45/60/75/90
SHIVA
SMITE’s newest god has proven to be especially evasive. His various immunities and movement abilities make him especially hard to run down and kill. Pillar of Dawn is increasing in cooldown to be the flat 18s at all ranks which should make him easier to catch. His Ultimate is also seeing a damage scaling decrease, which applies to all 4 ticks for a total of 20% decreased Physical Power Scaling. This Ultimate has a lot of flexibility and utility which we want to feel equally powerful as the pure damage option. Shiva also has an additional nerf on the way in the main patch that required code to implement and could not be included in this bonus update.

PILLAR OF DAWN
  • Increased Cooldown from 18/17.5/17/16.5/16s to 18s at all ranks

SHIVA TANDAVA
  • Decreased Physical Power scaling on the damage dance from 45% to 40% per hit
    • (Which decreases Physical Power scaling on amplification dance from 22.5% to 20%)
    • (Which decreases amplified damage dance power from 67.5% to 60%)
NEW SKIN VOICE ACTORS
  • Goose Chase Jormungandr: Darius Johnson Buchwald
  • Bit Battler Ares: Kamran Nikhad
  • Necrowmancer Ah Puch: Meli Grant
  • Siren Song Cliodhna: Lauren Synger

For the new god skins, head on over here.

Sumo Digital has not yet revealed the complete list of gameplay and balancing tweaks done in this patch other than this announcement:

Chances are, we’ll get the official patch notes released later today, and once we do, we’ll be sure to update the post.

For those on PlayStation platforms, don’t forget, the game is free for PlayStation Plus members starting today! You can read our review of the multiplayer-focused game right here where our own James Lara states, I think it plays great to the point where I’m having a ton of fun just going around and killing things. But sadly this is where most of my praise ends, as while I think Heists is a really creative mode, the unbalancing ruins it.”
