PS5 Fan to Be Optimized Over Time by Online Updates According to Sony

Worried about your PS4 fan wheezing by as if it’s going to explode? That might not be as big of an issue with the PS5. The PS5 Fan to be optimized over time by online updates according to Yasuhiro Ootori — Sony’s Vice President of mechanical design at Sony Interactive Entertainment.

In an interview with Japanese site 4Gamer.net, Ootori explained that the behavior of the Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) in each game will determine how Sony will optimize fan control, using the data to deliver updates that will fix and adjust each unit accordingly:

“Various games will be released in the future, and data in the APU’s behaviour in each game will be collected,” Ootori said. “We have a plan to optimise thefan control based on this data.”

In Sony’s recently released PS5 teardown video, it was revealed that the next generation system has a double-sided air intake fan — to help cool the system as it heats up as it’s being used. There’s also a temperature sensor inside the console — three in the main board to control fan speed and one in the APU itself. This of course will all be adjusted once Sony collects data and tweaks the fan speed according to each game’s performance. The heavier the load, the louder the fan sound will be to compensate for the cool down.

Be sure to check out our related feature on the PS5 trophies being tied to digital rewards.

Sony’s next PlayStation console will be released on November 12 in major territories like the US and Japan, with the rest of the world to follow on November 19.

Black Ops Cold War Cheaters Are Already Terrorizing the Beta

Year in, and year out, there are always players who cheat in every Call of Duty game. Well, it seems that this year, they’re starting early! There are already Black Ops Cold War cheaters even if we’re just in the beta!

The Black Ops Cold War subreddit is littered with gamers posting videos of people just laser melting people with various cheats! There are wallhacks, aimbots and the like.

The MOST blatant and ridiculous aim hack I’ve EVER seen in a video game 😂
byu/madzuk inblackopscoldwar

With the beta opening crossplay against Xbox One and PC gamers, that means console gamers are also seeing the cheaters on their end. Here’s footage of PS4 gameplay of someone cheating in the game:

Guess I’m turning crossplay off forever. Thanks, Activision and Infinity Ward. (Captured on PS4)
byu/SuicidalSundays inblackopscoldwar

While seeing cheaters in online multiplayer games is nothing new, it’s kind of terrifying to see these people already using their hacks in a game’s beta. Hopefully, Activision and Treyarch are aware of this and bans their accounts ASAP once proven guilty.

In other Black Ops Cold War news, don’t forget that the beta has been extended for another day! We’ll be posting our beta impressions soon, as well as a feature on what stuff we want to see changed come launch.

Black Ops Cold War will launch this November 13 on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, with the game hitting next-gen consoles too.

Certain PS5 Trophies Will Be Tied to Digital Rewards

If you’re someone who “platinums” games on the PS4, you might have noticed how Sony has tied certain digital rewards to them. Stuff like PS4 themes and avatars would be given to those who platinum a certain game, with Sony alerting the gamer via email. It seems Sony is bringing this up a notch on the PS5, as it looks like certain PS5 Trophies will grant the gamer digital items!

On the PlayStation UI (User Interface) video blowout, we can see that two digital items are part of the rewards for unlocking certain Trophies for Destruction All-Stars!

As you can see, earning all the star objectives for the Bronze Trophy called the “Rookie” will reward the player with a profile banner, while completing the Gold Trophy “Wreckognized” will grant the player a profile avatar. Big difference to how it was on the PS4, it seems Sony will be granting these Trophy-specific digital rewards even without a Platinum, and it’s even mentioned in the Trophy itself!

Of course, we don’t know if this will be the case for every game, since we suspect this will be a on a case by case basis. That said, it’s definitely welcome news to see that players will earn more digital items for completing game objectives.

Collecting PS5 Trophies just got a lot more interesting.

Marvel’s Avengers Review – Reassembly Required

While Marvel might have lorded cinemas and pop culture for the last decade with the endless barrage of movies, TV shows, animated stuff and the like, there was one thing that was missing all this time, and that’s a proper video game featuring the heroes we know and love. Sure, we got an excellent Spider-Man game, but it wasn’t the Avengers, which fans all over the world wanted to play as. Well, that has changed with the Square Enix-published Marvel’s Avengers. Developed by Crystal Dynamics, is this the superhero team-up game we all wished for or does it get snapped into nothingness? Read on for our Marvel’s Avengers review.

Starting Strong

Before anything else, Marvel’s Avengers starts with the player taking on the shoes of a young Kamala Khan, as you learn the basic moves of the game. This also ties in to A-Day, which is the main crux of the story that’s surprisingly engrossing and mysterious.

We won’t spoil any big story moments, but it’s here where Crystal Dynamics shines the most. You can tell that the studio is suited to developing big, AAA single-player affairs, with the action punctuated by impressive set pieces from beginning to end.

The first part of the story is where we’re also introduced to the main baddies of the game, and it’s a tightly-woven script — at least for the most part. This first phase is also where the Avengers fail and where I was honestly surprised at how well paced the story was. Clocking in at around 8-11 hours to complete, the story mode is definitely well worth a playthrough, and when you add in the fact that this is also the mode where you unlock the other Avengers and learn the basics for each, well, this mode is the first thing players need to experience upon booting the title.

All About That Superhero Life

While the main story mode is loads of fun, admittedly, Marvel’s Avengers main draw is being able to play as an Avenger with your friends, and taking on enemies, and all the while earning loot and making your character stronger as you do so.

There’s a certain element of push and pull happening within the game, and I don’t envy the devs in designing it. Superheroes by nature, should be super, and just be able to flat out decimate enemies left and right. But implementing that into an actual game without breaking game balance? Yeah, not an easy task. Same with character progression, gear/loot, and even enemies.

In the comics or even MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), characters don’t “level up” and gain new moves. But given this is a game, that mechanic needs to be baked in, lest the devs give you everything at once and makes the game too easy (not to mention overwhelming). Thankfully, Crystal Dynamics has nailed down the progression system where it’s not too much of a grind for skill points, and being able to unlock new moves and abilities for each character feels rewarding.

However, the same can’t be said for loot, I’m afraid. In the traditional sense, loot doesn’t make a lick of sense for the game. I mean, the Hulk getting new shoulder pads or something to make him stronger? That doesn’t make sense, and what’s worse is, you don’t see these armor changes in your character. You do get used to it as you go along (to some degree), but still, I have to admit that not seeing your character’s appearance relect every big armor change is jarring given we’re used to collecting armor setpieces in looter shooters.

Speaking of the MCU, people should know by now that this is in no way connected to the films, but you can clearly see Crystal Dynamics being influenced by them; from the dialogue, character personality, and even combat moves. The good news is: you will get used to the non-MCU versions of these heroes eventually, though I sometimes wondered how much more fun the game would be if it had the proper tie-in to the MCU.

I Can Do This All Day…

One thing Marvel’s Avengers really shines is in combat. Each hero the game has available at launch all play differently, and each have their own strenghts and weaknesses that it’s a treat to test out different characters to see which one suits you best. While every character has the same combat idealogy in the sense that there are light, heavy combos and supers, they don’t behave the same way for each, that you won’t find yourself doing the same thing for one hero with another.

Another good thing about the combat is how Crystal Dynamics has found a good balance between functionality and style. Combos, super moves, special moves and the like, are mostly all functional and look friggin’ awesome as well. The first time you see Iron Man use his repulsor and laser combo? Yeah, pure comic book geek out.

That said, there are annoying gameplay design decisions when it comes to combat. Possibly one of the biggest offenders are the SPIN enemies that can steal all your Heroics (abilities) in one hit! I’m not even talking about stealing parts of it, but all of it — which means you can’t do any skill once they hit you. That said, Crystal Dynamics has been very receptive to fan feedback, so most of the gameplay-related issues are being looked into, though it might take some time.

We’re in the Endgame Now

With Marvel’s Avengers being a game that focuses on online gaming and loot, it falls under the now-dreaded GaaS genre (Games as a Service). This means that players will be playing the game long after the main campaign is finished, and they’re doing so all in the quest to make their characters reach the apex of power levels the game has to offer.

Unfortunately, this is where Avengers falters. With our review being published a month after, we were hoping that this would have given the developers enough time to cycle out missions, bosses and more. As of now though, that hasn’t been the case. Players will be replaying missions over and over in the quest for loot. While that in itself is unavoidable for all games in the genre (Destiny, The Division, etc.), it’s made more tedious in Avengers given the game’s recycled environments, and in most cases, enemies.

To date, there are still three bosses players can tackle for endgame stuff. While Crystal Dynamics has promised more are incoming, it’s not a good look that we’re about a month in and we’re still waiting.

Unannounced Marvel's Avengers Heroes

Avengers Assemble!

Marvel’s Avengers is a tale of two halves. While the campaign is a satisfying romp, the endgame and repetitive nature of activities (and enemies) means that the endgame loop is a bit dry for the time being. Still, given that we’re getting a new character soon, and with both Hawkeye and Spider-Man (the latter exclusively for PlayStation gamers) entering the roster soon, there’s a lot to look forward to in terms of content.

If Crystal Dynamics can push out more bosses, activity variety and maybe iron out a few bugs along the way, this could be a Marvel game for the ages. That said, we’re banking on promises that might or might not happen. We’re hopeful, but at the same time wary of what the future holds for Marvel’s Avengers.

As it stands now, Marvel’s Avengers is a solid game thanks to its single-player story mission, and fun combat mechanics. However, a rather average endgame loop has made this hero fall a few times during its flight.

If you have a friend or two that can join in on the missions, then feel free to add a point (or .5) to the score as the game feels vastly different when playing with friends.

Score: 8/10

Pros:

  • Single-player campaign is fantastic
  • Combat is deep and each character feels distinct
  • Leveling up each Avenger and collecting/obtaining gear is a good timesink
  • Playing co-op and grinding for gear with friends is fun

Cons:

  • As of press time, bugs galore still in the game
  • Endgame activitiy is not varied enough
  • Enemies and envrionments need more variety and are recycled way too often

Battlefield 5 Will Run at Native 4K, 60 Frames Per Second On Series X

While DICE might not be releasing new content for Battlefield 5, players of DICE’s latest shooter have something to look forward to when next-gen rolls around, and that’s with the game’s improvements with the newer tech. Thanks to new info, we now know that the Battlefield 5 will run at native 4K resolution at 60 frames-per-second on the Series X.

This was mentioned by YouTuber jackfrags who has an Xbox Series X console to test the game on. He also mentions how the game on Xbox Series X doesn’t drop frames unlike the Xbox One version which stutters to 40-50fps when the action on-screen gets too hectic.

That’s comforting to know. Hopefully, this means that the next Battlefield game will be able to do the same (or do more) when DICE finally announces it.

While there’s no new Battlefield game announced, the game’s community has stepped in to fill the void! Check out the Battlefield 3 Reality Mod trailer to see what’s coming to PC players later this year.

Sony: “In the Process” of Prepping for PS5 Southeast Asia Launch, Will Make an Announcement “When Ready”

Following yesterday’s rather confusing news for Southeast Asian gamers looking forward to the PS5 launch this November, Sony has sent us an email commenting on the situation, though one that leaves us in the dark regarding the PS5 Southeast Asia launch scenario.

In an email statement sent to MP1st, here’s what Sony had to say:

We can confirm that the PS5 will also become available in MY/TH/ID/PH/VN and that we are currently in the process of preparation towards the launch.

SIES will make announcement on MY/TH/PH/ID/VN release dates and pricing when we are ready. Please keep a lookout for our local announcements on PS5 release in respective countries.

When pressed on whether this meant that the PS5 will indeed launch this Holiday 2020 in Southeast Asia, Sony reiterated that they will make an announcement when they are “ready.”

Does this mean those in Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, etc., will get it in November? We can’t say for sure. That said, the fact that Sony is preparing for the Southeast Asia launch is a good thing, since that means people in the region won’t be left in the dark.

If you want to make sure you’re aware of any announcements for PlayStation Asia, you can check out their official Twitter account.

Marvel’s Avengers New Villains Incoming, Kate Bishop DLC Delayed to Polish Game

It’s been a rather busy week for Marvel’s Avengers fans, and Crystal Dynamics. Not only did the studio release two patches this week, but the studio also held a devstream talking about some of the stuff being worked on for the game, and this includes Marvel’s Avengers new villains!

While the studio didn’t exactly name who the Avengers will be meeting soon, anything is better than fighting Taskmaster for the umpteenth time! In addition to that, Crystal Dynamics also acknowledged one of the most annoying issues with the game’s gear. According to the devs, gear with three perks but the third perk missing in the gear info is indeed working, and it’s just a visual bug! So don’t just scrap them just yet.

Another thing touched on during the stream was the announcement on how the Kate Bishop DLC was being pushed back, The studio says that this was being done to polish the game more — something I’m sure no one will object to.

While that’s the main takeaways from the devstream, Crystal Dynamics also mentioned that new character skins are coming, Captain America’s traversal is being looked into given he’s slow compared to the other characters.

Hopefully, we’ll get proper new villains for the game soon, as having more big bosses to take on is something the community has been asking for quite some time.

Xbox Series S Loading Can Be Faster Than Series X Due to Lower-Res Graphics

With the Xbox Series S set out to tbe the budget-friendly version of the Xbox Series X, it’s understandable that the Series X is more powerful in terms of raw power than the Series S, though it seems there is one advantage the Series S has over the Series X and that’s with loading times.

In an interview, Xbox boss Phil Spencer made this revelation when he mentioned that some games load faster on his Xbox Series S than his Series X because the console is loading lower-res graphics! There’s no word on which titles this applies to, or whether this will be the case for every Series S game. That said, at least there’s one thing the less powerful console has over its big brother.

In the same interview, Spencer mentioned that the blockbuster Microsoft-Bethesda deal wasn’t made to take game away from gamers.

The Xbox Series X|S are both set for release this November 10.

Report: Sony Removes “Holiday 2020” Mention on PS5 Page for Most South East Asian Countries

Here’s some potentially bad news for Sout East Asian gamers, it seems Sony has removed the mention of a “Holiday 2020” release for the PS5 on the offiical website for a lot of South East Asian countries! The only one left so far seems to be Singapore.

Here’s a screenshot of the official Indonesia PlayStation website from two days ago (via waybackmachine) that shows the “Holiday 2020” text:

Here’s  a shot of the same page but this time, the Holiday 2020 text has been taken out:

Note that aside from Indonesia, the other countries that seem to have the “Holiday 2020” text taken out include MalaysiaPhilippineThailand, and Vietnam. Does this mean that the PS5 won’t launch officially in those countries until after Holiday 2020? It sure seems like it. As for Singapore, the PS5 page for the country mentions that it has opened the second wave of pre-orders for the PS5 on October 16.

We’ve reached out to Sony regarding this  and will update the post if we hear anything back.

In other PS5 news, go check out the PS5 UI revealed officially in an 11-minute demo!

Watch Dogs Legion PS5, XSX Will Run in 4K 30fps, Ray Tracing Support Confirmed

The Watch Dogs Legion frame rate and resolution has been confirmed for both next-gen consoles. Taking to a recent Reddit AMA, Lathieeshe Thillainathan, the Live Producer of Watch Dogs Legion confirmed that both next-gen consoles will support 4K resolution, 30fps (frames per second), along with ray tracing.

Comment
byu/watchdogs_devs from discussion
inwatch_dogs

He didn’t confirm whether we would see all three in one mode or if ray tracing would be a separate graphic mode with dynamic 4K, but he did in the least confirm that the Xbox Series X will indeed run at 4K 30FPS when asked specifically about the console.

Comment
byu/watchdogs_devs from discussion
inwatch_dogs

No details on whether a performance mode (higher than 30fps) was given either.

To compare, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has been confirmed to run at 4K 60fps on the Xbox Series X and apparently PS5 (according to Digital Foundry DE). Both title are set to be massive open world, however with Legion being more focused on it’s online aspect versus Valhalla mostly being single-player centric, perhaps this may be the reason why the FPS isn’t going to be as high with 4K enabled. That, and the fact that players can apparently control any NPC in the game, one could say that Watch Dogs Legion has more tech behind it when it comes to it’s open world. Then again, we still don’t know if there will be a performance mode of some sort.

Guess we’ll learn more as we get closer to launch, which will be happening in just a few short weeks. Watch Dogs Legion is releasing on October 30 for current gen consoles, with the next-gen versions arriving on the days of the Xbox Series and PS5 launch.

If you’re interested to know more about Watch Dogs Legion’s multiplayer, head on over here.

Phil Spencer: Bethesda Deal Not Done to Take Games Away From Another Player Base

Just last month, the gaming world was rocked when Microsoft announced that it was buying ZeniMax Media, which was the parent company of Bethesda — home of the Fallout, DOOM, and other noteworthy franchises. While Microsoft already said that it will honor the previous deals made by the publisher before the buyout (such as Deathloop’s PS5 exclusivity), we’re left in the dark when it comes to future Bethesda games.

In a new interview with Kotaku, Xbox boss Phil Spencer talks about the Microsoft Bethesda acquisition, and states they didn’t buy the House of Skyrim just so less players can play Bethesda’s games.

This deal was not done to take games away from another player base like that. Nowhere in the documentation that we put together was: ‘How do we keep other players from playing these games?’ We want more people to be able to play games, not fewer people to be able to go play games. – Phil Spencer, Xbox boss

In the same chat, Spencer was asked whether it was possible to recoup Microsoft’s $7.5 billion investment in Bethesda even if say, Elder Scrolls VI, doesn’t come out on a PlayStation platform. Spencer states “yes,” and explains what he means.

But I’ll also say in the model—I’m just answering directly the question that you had—when I think about where people are going to be playing and the number of devices that we had, and we have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don’t have to go ship those games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us. Whatever that means. – Phil Spencer, Xbox boss

Go read the entire interview to know more about Spencer’s thoughts on the Xbox Series S, internal studios and more.

Marvel’s Avengers Update 1.12 October 16 Sneaks Out

While we just got a big Marvel’s Avengers patch the other day, Crystal Dynamics has released the Marvel’s Avengers update 1.12 October 16 patch and it’s live now on all platforms! This is a super small download at just 90MB on PS4, and 102MB on Xbox One. Head on below for the known changes.

Marvel’s Avengers Update 1.12 October 16 Patch Notes:

Crystal Dynamics has not released the official notes just yet, but thankfully, the Marvel’s Avengers community is here to help!

  • One Reddit user says that the background in the Sub Zero base has been changed
  • New Tachyon Rift mission in Scandinavian Highlands (it is new, but could be part of refresh)

Once Crystal Dynamics releases the official notes or comments on the changes, we’ll update the post. If you see any gameplay-related or front-facing changes, let us know in down in the comments, and once we verify it, we’ll update the post.

In other Marvel’s Avengers news, Crystal Dynamics boss Scot Amos wrote a long letter to the fans explaining the gamne’s next-gen delay, as well as a delay on the Kate Bishop DLC that’s originally set for this month. However, all players will be getting a thank you gift as well. Read more about all that here.

Sucker Punch: Ghost of Tsushima Multiplayer Planned “From the Beginning,” Part of the Core Experience

With today’s Ghost of Tsushima patch, Sucker Punch Productions have now introduced Ghost of Tsushima multiplayer to the single-player title. While the multiplayer component (called Ghost of Tsushima Legends) might have come as a shock to many when it was announced, the studio planned for it to be included right from the start.

In an interview, Legends Lead Daren Bridges revealed this little tidbit of info, as well as mentioned how the Ghost of Tsushima multiplayer was to be part of the “core experience.”

SPEAKING ABOUT LEGENDS, I WOULD SAY THAT GHOST OF TSUSHIMA IS QUITE AN ISOLATED EXPERIENCE. I DON’T THINK ANYBODY WAS EXPECTING THE GAME TO GET MULTIPLAYER. WHEN WAS THIS DECISION MADE AND WHY?

Daren Bridges: It was from the beginning, actually. From the very first pitch when we were talking we knew that we wanted to have a big, cooperative multiplayer element and we wanted that to be part of the core experience and a pillar of the game Coming to Legends, there’s a lot of stuff that in a single player game, especially an open world game, and especially a very story focused game is harder to adapt to a co-op experience. And so we found this nice marriage. All the missions in Legends are kind of stories told by a storyteller, kind of like the mythic missions in Tsushima. They’re all told by a storyteller and it’s his kind of take on events that have happened, the Mongol invasion, the repelling the Jin and that and ghost repelling this overwhelming force. So it felt like that was a really cool mix up that would allow us to connect it to Jin’s story, but also give us the freedom to really focus on the co op gameplay elements that we wanted to hit.

Given how great Ghost of Tsushima’s single-player campaign is, the multiplayer portion is but a bonus — though one that adds tremendous value to the title. Go check out our review of Ghost of Tsushima to see why it’s in the running as our Game of the Year.
