Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Weapons and Traversals Trailer Gives a Sneak Peek at the Tools of the Trade

Prepare to cross dimensions and arm yourself with the best kind of stuff to deal with enemies, as Insomniac Games released a Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Weapons and Traversals Trailer — which gives a snake peek at the tools of the trade players can use!

Here’s the trailer that ushers in Zuckon Jr’s Almost Launch Party event!

Here’s an overview of what these weapons and traversals are and what to expect from the game.

True to the Zurkon name, Jr. is leading off our celebratory blowout with a literal bang by discussing his favorite topic: weapons and traversal! As you’ve come to expect from the franchise, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart features our signature roster of powerful weapons, including classics like the cutting-edge Buzz Blades, to new destructive tools such as the Blackhole Storm and Negatron Collider. We’re also amping up immersion by using the unique features of the DualSense wireless controller: pull the adaptive triggers all or halfway for specific weapons to unleash alternating shots of devastation, feel the force behind every blast through the controller’s haptic feedback, and hear the clicks and ticks of your weapons via the built-in speakers.

Rivet shows off the Phantom Dash in all its stylish glory

In addition to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s staggering arsenal of weapons, we’ve also given Ratchet — and by extension Rivet, some new moves to use in and out of combat. Use the Rift Tether to transport yourself across battlefields, or activate the Phantom Dash to safely dodge and phase through incoming enemy attacks. But rather than me telling you what’s to come, I’ll let Jr. show you in our weapons-focused episode of Zurkon Jr.’s Almost Launch Party.

If you’re gearing hard drive space for Rift Apart, here’s the download size and how big the game will be on the PS5.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart launches exclusively on PS5 on June 11.

Marvel’s Avengers Update 1.37 May 18 Flies Out for Red Room v1.7.0 Patch

Avengers assemble! The promised new event for Marvel’s Avengers has dropped today! Crystal Dynamics has released the Marvel’s Avengers update 1.37 May 18 patch, which is for the Red Room event (called the v1.7.0 patch by the devs). The patch is out on last-gen and current-gen (PS5 version is 1.000.014) and this brings a new event, new “Champion System”, and a lot more.

Marvel’s Avengers Update 1.37 May 18 Patch Notes:

File Sizes:

  • PS5 – 4.58GB
  • Xbox One – 10.23GB
  • Steam/PC – 5.9GB

NEW FEATURES

Red Room Takeover Event – Yelena Belova has a bone to pick with Black Widow. Multiple hacked HARM Rooms will be available during this event along with new mission chains. These HARM Rooms are single player and will also scale from Power Level 1 to 120. Can you survive the takedown? For more info, head to our previous blog HERE.

  • Minor missions will award the player the newly re-introduced Surging Set gear if their Hero is above Power Level 80. Heroes below 80 with get scaling gear.
  • The major mission will award the nameplate, a large amount of Polychoron, and Upgrade Modules. Heroes above PL120 will also get 1 piece from the Exotic set found in Last Avenger Standing. Heroes who are PL119 or lower will get scaling gear.
  • Scaling gear is a reward type that is designed to moderately improve a player’s Power Level without having a fixed rarity. It will have Power Level improvements similar to mission completions, but make sure that the rarity is appropriate to the Hero’s Power Level.

Champion System – With the new Champion System, Heroes who are level 50 can now earn XP to further improve their combat abilities. Once a Hero reaches level 50, earned XP from that point on is changed to Champion XP, which is specific to each Hero. Earning enough Champion XP will increase your Champion Level allowing you to unlock brand new Champion Skills. For more info, head to our previous blog HERE.

Hero’s Catalyst – As a compliment to the Champion System, we’re also introducing Hero’s Catalysts, which increase the amount of XP you’ll earn. These will occasionally be available for free to retrieve from the Marketplace, and we’re looking at other ways for you to earn them, as well. Hero’s Catalysts are a great way to catch up to friends or to level up any Heroes that haven’t reached level 50 yet.

  • Mega Hives will be reactivated on May 20.
  • The Heroic Mega Hive no longer erroneously resets.
  • Fixed a rare issue where enemies on Secret Within may not spawn, thus halting mission progress until the checkpoint is reloaded.
  • Previously released hostages are no longer briefly shown in their cells following a checkpoint reload.

  • Fixed an issue where gravity grenades could cause players to maintain Hulkbuster indefinitely.
  • Fixed an issue where Kate’s heavy attack could cause the camera to clip through objects and act erratically.

Developer Comments: We have made a number of improvements for gear in an effort to make gear drops more impactful and more consistent. These include improvements to drops from enemies, missions, chests, as well as what vendors sell.

We are dropping less non-useful items, but the items we are dropping are much more likely to be useful. The net effect of this change is that it’s faster to increase in Power Level although the number of items from enemies will be lower.

Gear rarities have a larger effect on attributes at all Power Levels. For example, a Rare item at PL 33 will have more attribute points on average than an Uncommon item at PL 33. Additionally, the attribute point ranges on higher Power Level items have been increased.

We have more exciting improvements to Gear coming, but we wanted to get these to you as soon as possible.

  • All chests have had Minor Artifacts added as possible drops.
  • Gold chests will no longer award common items.
  • Bronze and Silver Chests have a reduced chance at granting a Common item.
  • Branded gear has a better chance of giving that Brand’s preferred attributes.
  • Some missions have had fixed rarity rewards replaced with rewards that scale the rarity to the active heroes’ current Power Level.
  • Resolved an issue where Hero Set Gear could have equal to or worse attributes than Epic gear.
  • Resolved an issue where vendors were sometimes offering gear of the wrong rarity and Power Level. The effect of this change is that a hero increase in Power Level the vendor will offer better rewards for that hero.
  • Fixed several missions so they display accurate rewards.
  • Missions show more detailed secondary rewards when those rewards are available.
  • Removed the rarity reward penalty for getting low star rating on missions.
  • Resolved an issue where Old Fashioned Beatdown achievement/trophy would sometimes not track and unlock properly.

Now that’s one might update! In other Marvel’s Avengers news, Crystal Dynamics has confirmed they are still planning to release Spider-Man to PlayStation gamers sometime this year.

  • Talons of Tyranny
  • Antihero Chest
  • Athena Remodel
  • Persephone Rework
Game Modes
  • Starters in other modes
    • Duel and Joust
      • Death’s Toll, Death’s Embrace, and Death’s Temper are now Banned
    • Arena
      • Now allow the buying of all starter items except eye of the jungle and its upgrades – as arena has no jungle
    • Other modes
      • Now allow the buying of all starter items
Items

WIND DEMON
Sometimes the rigorous schedule of game development can be more troublesome than usual. In this case, we had already locked all bonus balance to be tested and shipped before the weekend. Over that weekend we had our first SPL games as well as a lot more gameplay data stream in. These two factors have led us to implement a few more nerfs that will go live in the main 8.5 Update.
Wind Demon is seeing a large decrease to the Movement Speed it provides, as well as smaller loss of Attack Speed. The Crit meta came back in a big way with SPL – with this item being the main catalyst. Rage is also a key factor, but that item requires a lot more time to get online and provides only power and crit, so Wind Demon is being nerfed instead.
  • Decreased Movement Speed from 20% to 10% and Attack Speed from 20% to 15% on the passive effect

UPGRADED MAGIC SHELL RELIC
This Relic has been the premier defensive choice for almost 2 years now. Shell provides a large amount of health swing in a fight when used at the right time, but its the block stacks on the upgrade that have really begun to warp the meta. Many Gods are heavily weakened by the blocks, so those are being removed and replaced with a more fair basic-attack counter that should affect a different set of gods. This change should bring back many new options to Junglers, especially in the pro league.
  • Upgraded Shell no longer provides block stacks
  • Instead – The buffed gods takes 50% less damage from basic attacks for as long as they have the health shield

(UPGRADE) THE ALTERNATE TIMELINE
This Timeline only grows in power. The Alternate Timeline’s passive looks potentially strong on paper but the revive time, feedback, and overall health restore gives enemies a strong opportunity to secure the kill on the revived target. This item was previously statted with the idea that this passive was stronger than it really ended up being in practice. We are bringing the Magical Power up on this item to better reflect its true strength.
  • Increased Magical Power from 45 to 70

(STARTER) ARCHMAGE’S GEM
Archmage’s Gem still has moments of play but we have seen the Mage starter items really open up from the Conduit and Archmage’s Gem rushes at the start of the season. Some extra Mana will not only give this item a solid +1 that isn’t raw damage, but will let it synergize with other Mage items that care about Mana.
  • Added 200 Mana

(UPGRADE) GEM OF FOCUS
Similar to Archmage’s Gem, we want to ensure that this tree remains competitive with Sands of Time (the most popular choice in SPL) and other Mage starts. A bump to its power should help it evenly across any mage who may want to try out Gem of Focus.
  • Increased Magical Power from 90 to 100

(UPGRADE) BUMBA’S SPEAR
Bumba’s Spear has not only felt weak since the start of Season 8, but it had to compete with the arguably strongest starter in the same tree. Even with the nerfs coming in Bonus Balance to Bumba’s Hammer this item still needs some extra kick to make it feel worthwhile. CDR and Mana will make this more attractive in general, but we are swapping the gold generation with raw Power when slaying Jungle Monsters, Bosses, and Structures. Bumba’s Spear holders can now use that 10s window to make some strong power plays.
  • Added 10% CDR
  • Removed 200 Mana
  • Passive now provides a 10% Power buff for 10s duration after Jungle Camps, Structures, and Jungle Bosses
  • No longer provides bonus gold on Jungle Camps, Structures, and Jungle Bosses

(UPGRADE) MANIKIN HIDDEN BLADE
Manikin’s Hidden Blade was another Jungler Starter Upgrade that really struggled to make an impact. The proc didn’t feel worthwhile considering the difficulty to apply it regularly in combat and most Assassin’s couldn’t convert Basic Attack Power into meaningful damage output late game. Basic Attack Power is being converted to simple Power while the proc is getting some love to alleviate both these issues.
  • Removed Basic Attack Power
  • Now Provides 60 Physical Power and 90 Magical Power
  • Increased Bonus Damage on the passive from 15% of the target’s current health to 20%

(UPGRADE) SEER OF THE JUNGLE
You didn’t think that was all Junglers, right? We also have Seer of the Jungle to discuss. The idea of becoming a Ward destroyer was something we expected to have high value but the duration combined with the strength of other Starter Upgrades left this item behind. We are giving it some extra stats to help it compete more evenly with other options while increasing the window players can slay wards in.
  • Increased Attack Speed from 15% to 30%
  • Increased the duration of the buff on the passive that allows you to see wards from 10s to 15s

(STARTER) WARRIOR’S AXE
In our last update we buffed Bluestone Pendant which has been a point of discussion for the community. We did that buff due to Bluestone Pendant struggling on the data side but it looks like we missed how players actually felt and utilized these items. Not only did they feel it was powerful but it highlighted the feeling that the other starters were underwhelming. Rather than just nerfing Bluestone Pendant and leaving everything as is, we want to look at bringing Warrior’s Axe and Warding Sigil up to better compete with Bluestone Pendant. We want Warriors to feel like they have 3 powerful options rather than 3 not terrible options. Warrior’s Axe will now steal more health more often, really encouraging you to trade when this passive becomes available.
  • Increase Health Steal on passive from 25 to 30
  • Decreased cooldown from 10s to 8s

(STARTER) WARDING SIGIL
Warding Sigil originally had an identity of being a Magical God counter but this felt too narrow. We are increasing it’s Physical Protection to make it a more compelling choice against all gods who do ticks of small damage rather than being a Magical god counter.
  • Increased Physical Protection from 10 to 15

(STARTER) BENEVOLENCE
There was an issue where this item was splitting its reward among nearby allies rather than providing it to a single nearby ally. This caused some players in conjunction with a rounding up rule we added in a previous patch to generate quite a bit of extra gold and XP when stacked. This should no longer be the case.
  • This effect now gives only one nearby ally the bonus gold and XP

(UPGRADE) COMPASSION
Unlike other Starter Upgrades where any extra gold can be a nice bonus, losing the Gold generation from Benevolence at 17 felt particularly rough. Keeping hold of some GP5 will ensure Supports who pick Compassion have that much extra funds to play with in games that go long.
  • This item now provides 8 GP5

(UPGRADE) SENTINEL’S BOON
Sentinel’s Boon is much closer to Sentinel’s Embrace in power than it was at the start of the Season, but it still could use more. Increasing the amount restored from 3% to 4% will provide Supports up to 24% of their Health and Mana back each wave which can really enable a successful Phoenix siege or defence.
  • Increased Health and Mana restored from the passive from 3% to 4% per assist

CHARON’S COIN
It’s time to flip and coin to see what item will get our next buff! Charon’s Coin found a strong place in Mage’s builds during Season 7 but has since dropped out of favor. The high cost investment and low immediate impact made it difficult to place into any builds. A lower cost and boost to power will alleviate those two pain points.
  • Decreased Cost from 2500 to 2400
  • Increased Magical Power from 80 to 90

BOOK OF THOTH
One other often considered start is Book rush. This start (or early buy) is for Mages looking to really pack on the Power and supports the Mana Build as a whole. The base version of this is getting a bump to ensure that that build path remains an option for Mages who want to work towards it.
  • Increase mana contribution on book of thoth by 1%
  • Increased MP5 from 15 to 20

SPEAR OF THE MAGUS
Spear of the Magus and Spear of Desolation often feel like two sides of a similar coin, where one becomes the go to over the other based on Math. While they have their niches outside of that we wanted to further highlight Spear of the Magus as having a different application. This item now provides lifesteal which note only makes it an attractive high DPS Lifesteal item, but bolster Lifesteal builds as a whole.
  • Added 12% Lifesteal

MAIL OF RENEWAL
Mail of Renewal Buff
The new Mail of Renewal has many players itching to try it out, but feeling underwhelmed by the impact of this team based heal. At a small cost of personal tankiness this item will now heal in half the time making it much more impactful during a fight.
  • Decreased Health from 300 to 250
  • Decreased the time the heal takes to complete from 20s to 10s

STONE OF FAL
Stone of Fal also has unique applications for quite a few gods in SMITE but the cost was prohibitive. Supports often didn’t have the gold to experiment while more offensive minded players found more raw Power value at this cost threshold. Reducing the cost should open it up for additional experimentation.
  • Decreased Cost from 2500 to 2350
Persephone Rework

Persephone’s Rework changed a significant portion of her abilities. As such, she will be unavailable for Ranked Play until 8.6.

PERSEPHONE
The Persephone rework has many changes with specific goals in mind. To read up on all those details and goals we encourage you to check out our Persephone Rework Criteria and Goals Blog here.
In a more brief summary Persephone’s rework has a few major goals. First is enemy frustration. Her Passive combined with strong zoning and high variance in the outcome of her plants made her frustrating to fight against. On the flip side Persephone boasted one of the worst win rates in the entire game at all skill levels (even high end Ranked). She lacked a way to impact fights that didn’t go exactly as planned and the control she could exert on her own minions to make up for it was also limited, often falling to the enemy misplaying than her herself making a great one. With stronger control over her kit, more immediate impact in moment to moment gameplay, and better opportunities for enemies to counterplay she should feel better to play as and play against as an opponent.

POMEGRANATE SEEDS (REWORKED)
  • When Persephone dies she travels to the plane of death where she can place 6 Harvest Seeds that will sprout when she respawns. Each time one of her Harvest plants wither she gains a Pomegranate Seed. Extra Pomegranate Seeds are sold at the fountain for 3 gold a seed. Persephone can hold 100 seeds.
  • Major Changes:
    • Persephone no longer revives in a state where she can deal damage or apply CC. She instead enters this state to plan for her next life.

BONE RUSH (MAJOR ADJUSTMENT)
  • Ability : Line
  • Affects : Enemies
  • Range : 65
  • Persephone calls forth a Skeletal Warrior from the underworld. This warrior charges forward, damaging minions and stopping on gods. Enemy gods hit are slowed for 2.5s. Whenever it stops its skull falls, becoming a Harvest Skull.
    • Damage : 100/150/200/250/300 (+90% of your Magical Power)
    • Slow : 20/22.5/25/27.5/30%
    • Cost : 60/65/70/75/80
    • Cooldown: 12/11.5/11/10.5/10s
  • Major Changes:
    • This ability no longer has a ‘topple’ AoE but now has a much larger charge range.
    • Persephone can now continue to aim this ability right up until the moment it fires the projectile, improving the control over this ability.
    • This ability now slows, helping set up for her Harvest Flowers.

HARVEST (REWORK)
  • Ability : Circle
  • Affects: Enemies
  • Range : 50
  • Radius : 12.5
  • Persephone summons an explosion at a target location that places 3 Harvest Skulls. She can activate these Harvest plants with her Basic Attacks. When the Skulls are activated she restores health to herself. After 4s the Skulls turn into Harvest Flowers. When activated these Flowers charge forward in the direction hit, biting any target that gets close. Enemies recently bitten take reduced damage from other bites, stacking 3 times. She can have up to 5/5/6/6/7 Harvest Plants out at any time.
    • Explosion : 90/140/190/240/290 (+80% of your Magical Power)
    • Heal : 22/29/36/43/50 (+10% of your Magical Power)
    • Bite : 40/80/120/160/200 (+50% of your Magical Power)
    • Reduced Damage : 40/64/78%
    • Cost: 60/65/70/75/80
    • Cooldown: 14s
  • Major Changes
    • This ability now deals AoE damage upon cast and places multiple plants at once.
    • The plants themselves now only have 2 states, Skulls and Flowers.
    • Persephone can directly aim the charge direction of the Flowers, improving how she can utilize these flowers.
    • Enemies can see a clear AoE indicator, giving them something clear to avoid.

FLOURISH (BALANCE ADJUSTMENT)
  • Ability: Leap
  • Affects: Enemies
  • Radius: 20
  • Persephone floods the ground with necrotic energy that propels her from the ground directly forwards or backwards; based on the direction she is moving. Harvest plants inside the area immediately become Harvest Flowers and activate, charging in the direction Persephone is facing. Enemies caught in this area take damage.
    • Explosion: 65/105/145/185/225 (+65% of your Magical Power)
    • Range: 45
    • Cost: 70
    • Cooldown: 15/14.5/14/13.5/13s
  • Major Changes
    • This ability no longer generates a Pregerminated seed as the Sprout seed is gone.
    • This ability now deals damage to compensate Persephone for the loss of the follow up place/explode Persephone players were used to.

GRASP OF DEATH (BALANCE ADJUSTMENT)
  • Ability: Line
  • Affects: Enemies
  • Radius : 55
  • Persephone conjures Entrapping Vines that she throws forwards, entrapping the first enemy god or wall it touches. Entrapped gods are crippled, rooted, and have reduced Attack Speed. Vines then spawn from the Entrapped target, seeking nearby enemy gods. Gods bound are crippled, can no longer move further than 55 units away and are slowed while running away from the center. Entrapping vines are destroyed if hit by 5 Basic Attacks(3 if it trapped a Wall), ending all effects.
    • Damage: 175/245/315/385/455 (+75% of your Magical Power)
    • Vine Damage: 65/90/115/140/165 (+30% of your Magical Power)
    • Attack Speed Reduction : 15%
    • Slow: 15/17.5/20/22.5/25%
    • Duration: 5s
  • Major Changes
    • This ability no longer constricts movement the closer you get to the Entrapping Vines, allowing enemies more options to fight inside the effect or while trying to free an ally.
    • Players can move up to 55 units away at all times, but will move slower when running away from the center.
Gods
GILGAMESH
Wait, didn’t I just write about nerfs for this guy? Oh, nerf him some more? Ok then. Well Gilgamesh continued to rise in the data over the weekend, likely as people learned how to play him better over time. Some gods level off after a few days but Gilgamesh continued to rise. We are adding two more nerfs. Sun-Forged Scimitars initial damage is coming down at the later ranks, and Drop-kicks stun is coming down at the later ranks. It will be a small increase to the Stun at low ranks but this ability is a common choice to rank quickly.

SUN-FORGED SCIMITAR
  • Decreased Burst Damage from 65/100/135/170/205 to 65/95/125/155/185

DROP KICK
  • Adjusted Stun Duration from 1.1/1.2/1.3/1.4/1.5s to 1.2s at all ranks
TIAMAT
Many suspicions were confirmed when we finally saw Tiamat picked in a single SPL game. Her ability to split push is still too strong. Although her nerfs have been effective, these basilisks have continued to be too alluring of a choice for her ultimate. We are nerfing them pretty substantially to make this a more fringe and situational option.

BASILISKS
  • Decreased the lifetime of the deployable from 21s to 11s (results in only 4 basilisks spawning in total instead of 6)
BAKASURA
Who’s hungry?! Bakasura is ready for a buff! He showed some potential at the start of the season with a larger map and his quick jungle clear, but he has started to fall behind the rest of the pack. The god often suffers from mana issues in the early game, so now Eat Minion will have a mana heal attached to it that helps Bakasura stay ready for combat, as long as he stays well fed. Butcher Blades is also seeing a cooldown decrease to make sure he is ready to fight when the moment arises.

EAT MINION
  • Decreased Mana Cost from 55 to 40
  • This ability now restores 60/65/70/75/80 flat mana upon successfully eating a minion

BUTCHER BLADES
  • Decreased Cooldown from 14s to 12s
BELLONA
It’s a high pressure solo lane, and even with the upcoming buffs it’s looking like Bellona is being left behind. Even when Manikins was insane for warriors she only showed a glimpse of meta play. We are giving her a small bonus to her early lane clear, as well as some more consistency to her Ultimate CC which should help the goddess to better perform across a variety of situations and skill levels.

BLUDGEON
  • Increase Spin Damage from 30/60/90/120/150 to 45/75/105/135/165

EAGLE’S RALLY
  • Increased Stun from 1s to 1.25s at all ranks
CHIRON
It’s time to ride! Chiron has had a few buffs and is starting to perform quite well (although player perception clearly isn’t sold on this yet). We are applying one small buff to make it even harder to interrupt his dash, a key part of his kit. The real Chiron mains know that Giddyup can be a total game-changer, and now its even more likely to be effective.

GIDDYUP!
  • Chiron is now knockup immune while galloping.
DA JI
This goddess herself fell victim to the death by one thousand cuts. She had a series of nerfs, then the meta just seemed to fall out of her favor season after season. The Shell change will certainly be helping her but we still felt like she could use a bit more. These two abilities often feel less impactful than they should, especially with their restrictions in place like long channel times. We are going to be upping the damage so enemies feel the pain Da Ji likes to bring.

ONE THOUSAND CUTS
  • Increased Base Damage from 25/45/65/85/105 to 30/50/70/90/110

TRICKSTER SPIRIT
  • Increased Base Damage from 70/110/150/190/230 to 80/120/160/200/240
FAFNIR
It’s Fafnir buff time, but don’t get too greedy! We know that Fafnir can quickly take over the pro scene when he is strong, but it’s been quite a while and we haven’t seen much of this shapeshifting god. Fafnir brings a strong setup, a stim for allies, and a lot of evasion but his cooldowns were very restrictive. These are being relaxed so that the god can be sure to make an impact on each fight.

CURSED STRENGTH
  • Decreased Cooldowns from 15s to 15/14.5/14/13.5/13s
  • This cooldown also applies to his Ability 01 in Dragon Form

UNDERHANDED TACTICS
  • Decreased Cooldown from 18s to 15s
  • This cooldown also applies to his Ability 03 in Dragon Form
HERA
The Queen returns! Hera was top of the meta for a while, but a seemingly small nerf to her Divine Shroud took her down further than expected. The map and meta changes have done her no favors so we are looking to buff her directly. Hera’s going to be dealing some more damage in the late game, as well as gaining back part of the strength of her health shield, but with even less emphasis on the need to rank it up.

POLYMORPH
  • Increased Magical Power Scaling from 75% to 80%

DIVINE SHROUD
  • Increased Health Shield from 50/100/150/200/250 to 70/110/150/190/230
  • Increased Health Shield from 15 to 17 * Hera’s Level
    • Total shields are: 65 to 550 vs 87 to 570 based on lvl1 rank 1 and lvl 20 rank 5 min and max
KUKULKAN
The Noodle is back! Kukulkan finally got his classic skin, but he’s missing some of that classic strength. The god tends to be a popular casual pick yet quite rare at higher levels of play. We saw a few matches with him in the SPL but this was likely due to personal preference or players playing from remote locations with higher ping. This buff should help him to excel in more areas without pushing him over the top.

SLIPSTREAM
  • Decreased Cooldown 15s at all ranks to 15/14.5/14/13.5/13s
MEDUSA
Don’t look into her eyes! But we do want you to look again at picking Medusa. Her dash is often described as her weakest ability. It has some unique rules to how it hits and applies damage to enemies which we aim to keep for now. However, there are some numbers to tune. The debuff change will help ensure Medusa wins trades after dashing aggressively, and the cooldown change will make her a generally safer late-game god, which is quite valuable for hunters.

LACERATE
  • Increased healing debuff duration from 3s to 4s.
  • Decreased cooldown from 15s to 15/14.5/14/13.5/13.
MULAN
Recently we tried to add some oomph to this goddess, but those buffs have shown to not be enough. We looked at more ways to make Mulan feel impactful, and noticed many of her mains felt underwhelmed by the duration of her self buffs. These will now last longer to make sure she makes use of them. She will also be stunning enemies slightly longer when hitting them with Grapple, which is sure to make a big impact.

CROSS STRIKE
  • Increased the Buff duration from to 4s to 6s on the “(Skilled) Attack Speed” buff effect

GRAPPLE
  • Increased the Buff duration from to 4s to 6s on the “(Skilled) Protections” buff effect
  • Increased Stun Duration from 0.8s to 1.0s on all ranks

How Powerups Transform Platformers With Tactical Choices

I’ve always been fascinated with the dramatic transformation that platformers undergo when players are given a powerup. It started in my first playthrough of Super Mario on the Game Boy, but more recently, it’s been Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time that has shown me just how far these items push the genre. In a way, I think that platformers with powerups are more tactical. I’d even go as far as saying that they’re in their own genre entirely. However, that’s not entirely fair when you start to count almost every item as a powerup. This article will explore this concept and explain why it’s now so necessary for a platformer to have powerups.

Mario is the undisputed king of platformers. Other contenders like Crash Bandicoot have come along with their own unique take, but Mario was always the progenitor. In the early titles, players had two powerups, the mushroom, and the fire flower. A mushroom gives Mario the ability to jump higher, run faster, and take a hit without dying. The fire flower does the same, but it also adds an offensive weapon to the player’s arsenal. Each one totally changes how you approach the level, but without them, the level is completely different once again.

Tactics

Depending on how good you are at a platformer, you may shun powerups or opt to get them at every opportunity. In Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, there are rail sections that you need to actively take damage on if you want to get 100% completion for that level. Here, you can see the games using powerups in a tactical manner. Powerups didn’t always work like this, though. Mario games today still give you the option to complete a level without using powerups. That lofty goal of 100% completion is locked behind the mastery of the powerup system, though. Learning bit the most basic and advanced tactics to grab the final Star or Moon.

Think back to when you first played any platformer. Your only goal was to complete the level. You had no concerns for the collectibles in each mission and no cares for the additional paths you could take. At that point in time, the platformer was just that, a platformer. Afterward, though, once you’d mastered the level and wanted more of a challenge, the powerups come into play. These additional items give you the option to open new paths, take down more enemies, or get hit and enter a new area that you couldn’t before.

Powerups Forever

This is where tactics enter platformers, and it’s all because of powerups. It’s a theme that’s become so synonymous with games that businesses like PowerPlay have built themselves based on the names of these items. It’s more than a household name now. It’s a saying. If you’re thinking about taking your career to the next level, you’re using a powerup or are leveling up. The concept is the same. You’re adding a skill that makes you better, improving your base stats. All of this started with Mario and other similar platformers that completely change when you pick up a powerup.

Powerups are still as relevant today as they were in the original Mario games. They’re a game mechanic that improves the protagonist’s abilities. Sometimes they’re hidden, but they’re always there. Developers have crafted clever ways to disguise them, such as the system in Cities Skylines that opens up more buildings as your population grows. These will never disappear from games. They’re too intrinsically linked. The next time you play a game, even if it’s the next Call of Duty, think about how powerups change it for you the moment you obtain them, and then think about Mario.

Mario Golf: Super Rush Overview Trailer Shows Different Modes to Play With

Get ready to join Mario and friends as they get back to the game of golf beyond their mushroom kingdom adventures, as Nintendo delivers a brand new Mario Golf: Super Rush overview trailer — which shows different modes to play with that are presented with this new take on the Mario spin-off franchise!

Here’s the overview trailer which guides players how to get into the swing of things!

Courtesy of Nintendo’s press release, here are the different modes and content you can expect from the game!

·       Speed Golf: In the new fast-paced mode Speed Golf, players tee off in unison and race through the course to sink the ball as fast as possible. It’s important to avoid the course’s various hazards and collect items that regain stamina while sprinting to the ball. Players can also use Special Dashes and Shots to swing victory in their favor.
·       Battle Golf: In Battle Golf – a more strategic variation of Speed Golf – nine holes are in play at the same time. The first player to score three of the nine holes claims the victory, so it’s key to stay ahead of opponents or risk losing out.
·       Standard Golf: In Standard Golf, every stroke counts and the lowest score wins.
·       Golf Adventure: Solo players can go from rookie to pro when enrolling their Mii character at a country club in Golf Adventure. While interacting with familiar Mushroom Kingdom characters, they can learn how to play and take on a variety of challenges. Gaining experience makes it possible to level up the character, which can then be used in multiplayer modes.
·       Simple controls: Simple button controls make it easy for new players and seasoned pros alike. It’s as simple as taking aim, choosing the shot strength and sending the ball flying. Additionally, it’s possible to use motion controls by holding a Joy-Con controller like a golf club.*
·       Useful tools: Curving a shot is an effective technique to avoid hazards, and putting spin on the ball affects how it rolls after landing. Several features are on hand to help conquer the course, including a shot gauge that adapts to the angle of the slope and a scan that makes it easier to read the terrain.
·       Tee off with family, friends and familiar faces: Players can choose from a cast of 16 characters from the Super Mario series, each featuring different strengths and equipped with their own unique special moves. Pauline, Chargin’ Chuck and King Bob-omb will make their first appearance in the series. Players can hit the fairway with up to three others, both locally** and online***, in different modes.
·       Lavish locations: From standard courses to courses with special hazards, every round of golf is different. There is a variety of six locations to choose from.
Nintendo will have more stuff to present this coming E3 2021, which will have the likes of Square Enix, Sega, Bandai Namco and more participating — which you can read about here.
Mario Golf: Super Rush will be out for the Nintendo Switch on June 25.

Report: More Battlefield 2021 Screenshots Leak, Features a Robotic Dog

Just a few weeks ago, the first screenshots for Battlefield 2021 allegedly leaked, which featured a jet. After that, we got a purported audio leak of the reveal trailer as well, with the leaker threatening to leak the entire thing if EA and/or DICE doesn’t release the trailer immediately.

With DICE & EA waiting until June to release the reveal trailer, it seems more people are getting antsy, and one of them seems to have access to confidential stuff. Someone named “hi93048234” dropped a few purported Battlefield 2021 screenshots, with one shot featuring a robotic dog (not unlike the one featured in Metal Gear Solid 4) that known leaker Tom Henderson has alluded to be in the upcoming Battlefield game. Unfortunately, the screenshots are marked with a big, well, you’ll see what I mean down below.

https://imgur.com/a/BSifGPt

https://imgur.com/a/q2XjKwL

https://imgur.com/a/vRRac8e

Other images show a rocket which seems to be toppling over with loads of people underneath suggesting a rather gruesome death. There are also vehicles shown off as well. The robotic dog is something we assume can be used for combat, and is probably a gadget or equipment of one of the classes (maybe?).

Same as in every rumor, treat this one with a bag of salt. That said, don’t be surprised if EA takes them down or this is legit.

We’ll be on the lookout for more Battlefield 2021 stuff, so keep it locked in here on MP1st!

Riot Games Holds Pride Celebrations in League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, and More

Fans of Riot’s library of games and members of the LBGTQIA+ community will have a lot to do in the next few months, as Riot Games holds Pride Celebrations in League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, Wild Rift, and more.

Here’s the trailer showcasing the stuff Riot plans to introduce as they begin the celebration during this International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.

Much like how what they did when with Valorant back in 2018, Riot’s bringing in that and other free content to the rest of the Riot library, as detailed via press release.

We launched the Rainbow Fluft Icon back in 2018 as a dedication to queer players across the globe who share our love for games. The Rainbow Fluft has evolved in the years since, and this year the Rainbow Fluft—along with other free content—is coming to EVERY Riot game across May and June. That means you can equip your favorite Pride icon in League and match it with your player card in VALORANT.

Celebrating player identities is crucial to building a diverse and inclusive game experience, and we strive to approach representation with care, respect, and authenticity whether it’s in-game or represented in our lore. We’ve been working over the past few years to ensure every player can see themselves in our characters and games. There’s a lot more we want to do to create meaningful representation of LGBTQIA+ folks in our games, and we’re just getting started. Our commitment is to better equip our developers with education and best practices so every player can see themselves in our characters and games.

Speaking of Riot Games plans, the company together with Netflix is developing a League of Legends TV series — which you can read details about here.

EA Sports PGA Tour Partnership Adds PGA Championship and Coaches Expertise to the Game

EA Sports PGA Tour is adding some exclsuive high end content that golfing enthusiasts will love, as Electronic Arts partners with the PGA of America — which adds the PGA Championship and coaches’ expertise to the game!

Here’s the entire overview of the new content coming to the new PGA game via press release.

EA SPORTS is partnering with the PGA of America to allow players to virtually experience the PGA Championship, and only in EA SPORTS PGA TOUR will players be able to immerse themselves in the fanfare of the major championship. They will be able to hoist the historic Wanamaker Trophy, revel in the Champion’s Ceremony, play as or against past PGA Champions and compete on brilliant virtual renderings of the 2021 PGA Championship host course at Kiawah Island; and the 2022 host course at Southern Hills Country Club.

“The PGA of America is committed to growing interest and participation in golf, and we’re excited to partner with EA SPORTS to support the goal of reaching golf’s next generation,” said PGA President Jim Richerson. “The EA SPORTS team is working diligently with the PGA to authentically represent the PGA Championship in the game, and we’re thrilled that the game will shine a light on our PGA Professionals, who are some of the most important ambassadors for the sport.”

The PGA of America has a membership of nearly 28,000 PGA Professionals across the country who work to help further the love of the game through coaching, training and more. In recognition of one of the PGA Championship’s most unique aspects, EA SPORTS PGA TOUR will feature on the leaderboard members of the “Team of 20” PGA Club Professionals that earn a spot in the PGA Championship each year when the game launches.

The game will also include tutorials and coaching challenges, designed in collaboration with the PGA Education and Player Development Departments, that teach skills valuable not only in-game, but also in the real world.

“It’s always nice to play against the best Major Championship field ‘in the game.’ I’m happy that EA SPORTS will feature so many of the traditions the PGA Championship is best known for, including highlighting members of the ‘Team of 20’ PGA Professionals,” said two-time PGA Champion Brooks Koepka.

EA Sports PGA Tour was announced a couple of months back, which we reported on and it’s coming to next-gen consoles.

The new EA Sports PGA Tour game will be released some time on Spring 2022.

WB Games Studios Splitting Ownership After WarnerMedia & Discovery Merger

It looks like a major shake up is happening right now when it comes to some of video gaming’s beloved franchises, as the merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery have affected Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WB Games), and the studios under it.

WarnerMedia parent company AT&T has agreed to merge its WarnerMedia division with rival entertainment company Discovery Inc., and based on reports that surfaced, some of the gaming studios under the division are being shuffled around when it comes to ownership.

While no official roll call has been made on which studios are still owned by WB Games, and which ones are now owned by Discovery, the sale does include Warner’s DC Comics.

https://twitter.com/loudmouthjulia/status/1394339533542539277

As you can see from Stephen Totilo’s tweet above, some of the gaming studios will still be owned by AT&T, while others are now being absorbed by Discovery. There are 11 studios under WB Games which include the likes of Rocksteady, NetherRealm Studios, Avalanche Software, TT Games, and many more.

Will this affect development of games like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Gotham Knights? We can’t say for sure.

We’ve reached out to Warner Bros. to seek further clarification, and will update the post if we get a response.

Will Battlefield 2021 Suffer Because of Last-Gen Consoles?

In case you didn’t know, this year’s Battlefield game will be released on both last-gen (PS4, Xbox One), and current-gen (PS5, Xbox Series X|S) platforms. Now, if history were to repeat itself, there is a good chance that the next-gen versions of Battlefield 2021 are going to be offering a different experience than last-gen versions.

Look, it should be a no brainer that EA is releasing Battlefield 2021 on last-gen consoles. Given the current situation we are in due to COVID-19, there is a large shortage of supplies in nearly every industry, and for gaming, the latest next-gen consoles, the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. Even so, if we weren’t in this situation, chances would still be high that the company would be targeting a cross-gen release. There is just too much money on the table to be left, and at the end of the day, these are companies wanting to hit their margins. It’s the brutal truth of it that many tend to ignore, but that’s a different story for perhaps another day.

While they have come out on multiple occasions to say that the next Battlefield game is going to offer a true next-gen experience, many are left questioning how exactly they plan on doing that if they need to support the older consoles. Well, they have already given us that answer from their past examples.

Battlefield 3:

Battlefield 3 served as the studio’s return to large scale battles. With 6 long years passing since the release of Battlefield 2, and the title coming right off the heel of the success of Bad Company 2, expectations for the next big mainline title were at an all-time high.

The title released, and while it had a rocky start, it was a huge success for the most.

One thing many of you may not know or remember is that Battlefield 3 was actually a pretty different game when it came to playing on consoles versus PC. And no, we don’t mean the improved visual fidelity with increased textures, and frame-rate that PC hardware will always have an advantage with. Instead, DICE decided that rather than let the PC version suffer from the limitation of the lower spec consoles, that they would instead create a uniquely different experience, that only PC players could experience.

On PC, the staple conquest mode could support a total of 64-players. By today standards that’s a pretty common number, but back then, for a game with it’s visuals, that was a very huge feat. Compared to what was available for consoles, this was 40 more players that could play in a match.

On top of this, because the PC version could support more players, it also meant that the maps had to be big enough to do so. By DICE’s own account, they did want to feature more players and bigger maps on the PS3 and Xbox 360, but it would have meant downgrading the visuals, destruction, and a number of other things in order to give a playable experience. Whether the lower player count and smaller map sizes were better than what PC offered, or vice-versa, well that’s just a matter of opinion.

One thing is clear though, DICE didn’t “sacrifice” the PC version for the sake of making it on par with the console versions. Could it have been better? For sure.

Battlefield 4:

Battlefield 4 release is a bit of an interesting one because it released basically at the end of the PS3’s lifecycle and start of the new one., You could say it shares that with BF 2021, though 2021 is seeing a release a year after the launch of the new consoles, giving it more time to actually utilize the systems.

Like Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4 also offered more players and bigger maps on the beefier hardware compared to the weaker consoles. The difference here, however, was that both the PS4 and Xbox One were very capable machines and thus had the perks (namely 64-player matches) that the PC version had.

For console player’s this was a first, and because of that, the game arguably had bigger battles. DICE has also implemented a new destruction feature called “levolution,” which were essentially player-triggered moments in the game with scripted destruction. While this ran fine on the PS3 and Xbox 360, there was no question, that with the added player count, graphical increases, and performance boosts that their next-gen counterpart offered, that the experience felt far more epic on the newer hardware.

It was hard for anyone playing on the newer system to ever want to go back to anything less.

How Does This All Fit in With Battlefield 2021?

That’s a very tough question to answer, because we don’t know what DICE has in stored, not until next month at least. I think the point I was trying to make here is that it’s a bit premature to say that the PS4 and Xbox One are going to be “holding” back the PS5 and Xbox Series version of the game. This is especially true when we look at DICE’s history, and the differences that they have been able to provide on newer, and better hardware.

A lot of us may have lost a lot of good faith in the studio as of recent, but I think, judging from their history, the studio isn’t going to “gimp” their game for the sake of offering parity across the board. I would be surprised if that happens, but you know, anything can happen.

Now don’t take this as me saying that last-gen consoles won’t hold things back. I believe the exact opposite because a lot of creative ideas get brought up during development, only to be canned because they won’t work on the older hardware. When you have to build a game with the lowest denominator in mind, you are already thinking about things that will only work on said hardware. I’m sure they will still push the systems to what they can, but by default, they are still working around limitations.

This doesn’t mean that studio won’t be able to offer a “next-gen” experience over last gen of BF2021, but I don’t believe the game will achieve it’s full potential in terms of scope, unless of course DICE decides to really give a different experience.

This also begs the question of whether or not Battlefield 2021 is going to offer cross-play. Seeing that EA has been pushing the feature as of late, we can’t imagine the next Battlefield not having it. So would that mean that the game, outside of visuals and performance, be forced to play identically? Your guess is as good as mine.

I personally believe that DICE is going to go the route they have been, offer some exclusive perks for next-gen consoles, but never truly hit where the game could go. Like all game development, we probably won’t see the peak of scope for the series until it’s sequel or the one after, when there is no lower denominator that they need to think about.

What do you guys think? Can you see DICE giving the PS5 and Xbox Series some real perks, or, maybe it’ll be bogged down by last generation of console to the point that it’s a minor jump to what many hope for? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments.
