Fortnite Down for Incoming Patch, No ETA for Return (Update)

Update:

Servers are back up, though some might experience a queue when connecting.

Game on, people!

Original Story:

If you can’t log on to Fortnite servers right now, it’s due to Fortnite down time being implemented by Epic Games for the patch 1.8 that’s set to roll out today. This was revealed by the official Fortnite Twitter just now.

If you can’t see the tweet, it reads, “Fortnite servers are offline as we update to version 1.8.1. No ETA available for their return, but we will update you as soon as possible.” Yep, no ETA for now, which means we’ll update this post when Fortnite servers are back online whatever time that is within the day.

Hopefully, this update won’t accidentally break the game which happened with the last title update that necessitated a few patches to be pumped out in succession to fix it.

Once the Fortnite servers are back up, we’ll be sure to update the story. Ditto when the patch rolls in.

Riot Is Drastically Changing the EU League of Legends Championship Series for Better or for Worse

League of Legends‘ developer Riot Games has decided to drastically change the way the EU LCS (League of Legends Championship Series) operates for the upcoming 2018 season, a surprise departure from the recently updated format it had experienced just one year before

Over the course of 2017, Riot has “conducted analysis on viewership trends and ran community and player feedback sessions to evaluate the results of the 2017 format,” to find out whether the switch to a best of 2 match style that was decided upon in the preseason of 2017 was in fact a good choice.

What Riot discovered was that “the switch to Bo3 has made watching the EU LCS more difficult and less enjoyable.” As a result of this, Riot will be switching back to a Bo1 (best of 1) as to not alienate fans who don’t have the time to watch a potential of five games every time a match occurs. This move to help fans get back into watching LCS games will also affect broadcasting days, which will now be moving from Thursday and Friday to Friday and Saturday only.

Riot will also be eliminating relegation so that “teams will have more security when making investments in infrastructure, sponsorships, rosters and team strategies.” This change most likely stems from the recent EU teams that have voiced their concern with relegation essentially putting them on the chopping block after investing hundreds of thousands of euros to sustain their team.

Economics, My Dear Watson

The changes to relegation also come with changes to how Riot handles the economics of esports for League of Legends. Riot has announced that a partnership model “where league revenue is shared amongst all parties” is the best course of action to sustain the ecosystem for teams. This announcement could stem from the recent ultimatum given by EU LCS team H2K, who stated that unless Riot offer a better deal(like revenue sharing) for teams, then it would no longer participate in the LCS as the team had reported it was losing upwards of €1,000,000 annually.

However, Riot states that this type of revenue sharing partnership system would begin in 2019, and because of this, Riot will provide increased financial support for teams for the year to “alleviate some immediate pressure.” Teams can also look forward to viewership bonuses so that teams who build their brands and promote their matches can share in the success of LCS.

The Challenger Series, an amateur championship series for upcoming pros, will be removed as part of these changes. Riot says that “the current structure doesn’t meet these goals – overall it’s a high-risk, high-investment system for teams without stability for pros, and limited exposure.”

To replace the series, Riot will be introducing a pan-European tournament that will involve teams from varying countries to compete to not only gain exposure in a professional environment, but experience as well. These tournaments will run twice a year, and the top teams will be able to battle it out on the rift for a grand prize.

Resogun Developer Housemarque Bids Goodbye to Arcade Shoot-’em-up Genre

Well, here’s some rather sad news to darken your day. Housemarque, the studio behind games like Resogun, Dead Nation, Nex Machina and Matterfall, are saying goodbye to the arcade shoot-’em-up genre! Yes, the same genre where their games have firmly planted their roots in won’t see sequels from the studio anytime soon, it seems.

This was announced by Housemarque CEO and co-founder, Ilari Kuittinen. It seems Nex Machina and the studio’s other major release of the year, Matterfall, made it loud and clear that audiences aren’t just interested in these types of games anymore.

It’s bittersweet at this moment. The era, the ten-plus years that we’ve been mostly working on smaller, downloadable, arcade-inspired console games has come to an end.

We did our best. If you make a better twin-stick shooter we’ll look at it and say, ‘wow, you guys are good.’ We did something that very few people can exceed… We made the best game we ever made according to Metacritic, and I think we all feel the same.

There’s the thought that we’re a bruised champion, getting out of the ring, still with the belt, but we’ll have to recover for quite a long time – maybe move to another weight class, or something like that

For reference, Nex Machina is sitting a very impressive 88 on Metacritic, so it’s clearly not a case of the studio’s games not being good enough. One contribution to the lack of commercial success of Housemarque’s games have been the association Resogun had with PlayStation Plus members back when the PS4 launched. According to Kuittinen, it seems people actually like playing their games, but not paying for ’em, since they expect them to be free.

Ultimately, Kuittinen thinks that there’s no “paying audience” for games like the ones they made, or that they can’t reach these people properly.

What’s next for Housemarque? Not arcade twin-stick shooters. Kuittinen says that they’ve been “preparing for this moment.” Their next project will be a departure to what people expect from the studio, and will be released at a very early state, so the studio can see if it gains any traction.

This is a sad news for arcade shooters everywhere. I, for one, loved Nex Machina and Dead Nation a lot, and wish Housemarque nothing but the best.

Sledgehammer: Fans Wouldn’t Be as Excited If We Were Doing Advanced Warfare 2 Rather Than Call of Duty: WWII

In case you didn’t know, Sledgehammer Games, the studio developing the soon-to-be-released Call of Duty: WWII, developed Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare back in 2014. While some people might assume that a sequel would be the next logical step for the studio, it threw a curve ball by announcing a “boots on the ground” entry in the franchise with COD: WWII.

Speaking to TrustedReviews, Michael Condrey, co-founder of Sledgehammer Games, mentioned that it’s challenging trying to predict what the gaming public wants in three years (which is your standard Call of Duty development cycle for each studio), and being able to predict the trends in entertainment. He also adds that fans wouldn’t be this excited for this year’s Call of Duty game if it was Advanced Warfare 2 rather than COD: WWII.

That conversation will come about what we do next. Like coming out of Advanced Warfare, we’ll listen to fans, and coming out of November 3 it’ll be great to hear what fans love and where there’s opportunities to continue to improve the game. But we haven’t started that process yet, but it’ll be an interesting one, because coming out of Advanced Warfare it would have been natural for us to do Advanced Warfare 2, however I think we can all agree if we were doing Advanced Warfare 2 right now fans wouldn’t be as excited.

Is Condrey correct? Would fans not be as receptive to this year’s Call of Duty game if it was Advanced Warfare 2? I know I’m in that camp since I’m pretty much burned out of jetpacks and whatnot.

Don’t forget to check out our Call of Duty: WWII hub page to see the latest news like the complete list of Basic Training perks we’ve posted already known before the game’s official November 3 release.

Super Mario Odyssey Sales Already at Over 2 Million Copies in 3 Days, Over 500K in Japan in First Few Days

When October 27 hit, Super Mario fans around the world were all in unison with the hype surrounding Nintendo’s latest platformer Super Mario Odyssey. Not only did the hype meet expectations and beyond, but the sales of the game went beyond expectation as well.

Of the seven million Nintendo Switchs sold, it looks like over two million of those owners have bought Super Mario Odyssey, according to Nintendo in their financial results briefing. Nintendo says that due to the holiday season just around that corner, they can expect figures to grow much higher with excitement for the Switch still being extremely high.

Not impressed so far? Super Mario Odyssey is also doing very well even in Japan, too! Famitsu (via Gematsu) has revealed that 511,625 units of the game has been sold in Japan in its first three days of availability, and this doesn’t even include digital sales.

Are you one of those two million? If so, let us know if you’re liking Super Mario Odyssey in the comment section below!

EA: We Will Most Likely Discount Star Wars Battlefront II Around the Movie’s Launch

While Star Wars Battlefront II will ship out in a few weeks’ time, some might not have enough cash to pick it up due to the overwhelming deluge of games coming out during the holiday rush. If so, we (kind of) have good news for you! According to EA, Star Wars Battlefront II will “most likely” be sold at a discounted price once this year’s Star Wars film, The Last Jedi, hits theaters.

This was revealed by EA executive Blake Jorgensen during EA’s Q2 2018 financial earnings call.

We will most likely discount the game like we did last time around the movie launch, and maybe you’ll even see some selective discounts around the holidays, either Thanksgiving or Christmas. That’s the way the games business always has worked. And so if you see the title on discount, don’t read anything into that other than the fact that that’s the way you sell games in the holidays.

For reference, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to hit theaters on December 15, which is almost a full month from Battlefront II’s November 17 release date. Of course, we won’t know how much the game will be discounted and exactly when, so keep that in mind as well.

In other Star Wars Battlefront II news, make sure to check out the updated progression system announced by EA yesterday that aims to shelve any pay-to-win mechanics in the multiplayer portion. There’s also new gameplay videos showcasing Yoda, and Kylo Ren.

Will you be picking up Battlefront II at launch or will you wait it out for the discounted price?

Dead by Daylight Update Adds Balancing Tweaks and Bug Fixes

Dead by Daylight, the survival-horror multiplayer games from Behaviour Digital, has received a new Dead by Daylight update on all platforms that adds tons of balancing tweaks and bug fixes, including the ability to unhook a survivor from ALL possible angles.

You can find the entirety of the patch notes below to peruse as your discretion.

 Features & Content

  • Added the ability to unhook a survivor from all possible angles.
  • This is a step towards making the hook a happier place.
  • Adjusted Global Skill Check Chances, we believe they were currently a little too high when no item/perk was being used and we would like to encourage choice through items/perks and addons. As one of the first steps towards a *healthier balance we will be changing the following Skill Check Chances.
  • Heal Other Skill check Chance remains at 15%.
  • Heal Other with Medkit Skill Check Chance remains at 15%.
  • Heal Self with Medkit Skill Check Chance changed from 15% to 12.5%
  • Heal Self without medkit Skill check Chance changed from 15% to 10.5%
  • Repair with a toolkit Skill Check Chance has been changed from 8% to 10.5%
  • Repair without a toolkit Skill Check Chance has not changed, it remains at 8%.
  • Sabotage Hook with a toolkit Skill check Chance remains at 15%.
  • Sabotage Hook without a toolkit Skill Check Chance changed from 15% to 10.5%
  • Increased the time it takes to increase Bloodlust levels from 12 to 15 seconds. It has been brought to our attention that Bloodlust is currently triggering every 12 seconds. This is an error as Bloodlust is intended to trigger every 15 seconds. It is unclear when this issue occurred, Bloodlust should be triggering every 15 seconds as this should give an opportunity for survivors to lose the killer before they reach their next Bloodlust level. Bloodlust is intended to be an option for killers to use and it is not intended to be the answer to all situations.
  • Increased wiggle penalty for dropping a survivor from 25% to 33%. The initial intent was to cause killers to drop survivors after dropping them 4 times in a row. Due to recovery rates killers had 5 drops before the survivor was freed. This change should cause survivors to be freed after being dropped 3 times in a row when dropped in quick succession
  • Reduced “Good” healing skill check success reward from 1% to 0%. Good skillchecks are meant to continue progress as the skillcheck was not failed, Good skillchecks were not meant to advance progress.
  • Reduced the audio levels of The Wraiths growls while cloaked from the survivors standpoint
  • Removed some parts of the railing on the second floor of the Foundry in MacMillan Estate

Bug Fixing

  • Adjusted the audio cue when losing an item when the survivor was hit by a killer with the perk “Franklin’s Demise”
  • Fixed an issue causing the items to be lost when using the offering White Ward and the add-ons Weaved Ring & Milky Glass Token
  • Fixed an issue that caused The Wraith’s poncho to clip into the camera when attacking
  • Fixed an issue that caused items, perks, add-ons, powers, and offerings to have the incorrect inventory type text on the scoreboard
  • Fixed an issue that caused no bonus Bloodpoint rewards when using The Shape’s add-ons “Scratched Mirror” & “Vanity Mirror”, numbers are currently too high, they will be reduced in the next patch.
  • Fixed an issue that caused placeholder Lore Tips to be displayed on the loading screen
  • Fixed an issue that caused the Killer to become stuck in the boxes on the porch of the Strode house in Haddonfield when performing a window vault interrupt
  • Fixed an issue that caused the chainsaw’s rev audio looping when doing a pallet stun on the Cannibal
  • Fixed an issue that caused the perk “Franklin’s Demise” not destroying the toolbox add-on “Brand New Part” when survivor is hit while using it
  • Fixed an issue that caused the smoke VFX from the Nurse’s Sally of the Lantern cusotmization to reappear before her blink was complete
  • Fixed an issue that caused the smoke VFX from the Nurse’s Sally of the Lantern cusotmization to remain visible when looking downwards
  • Fixed an issue that could cause a hooked survivor to become broken for the rest of the match if a survivor got disconnected while unhooking them
  • Fixed an issue that could cause bear traps to float when placed in certain areas in the Grim Pantry map
  • Fixed an issue that could cause players ranks to reset when closing the application
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the match management settings to reset to default after each match in Kill Your Friends
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the non host killer of a Kill Your Friends match to remain in game when leaving the match
  • Fixed an issue that made it impossible for Killers to pick up survivors if they exited the locker in crawl state
  • Fixed an issue that made it impossible to earn the “No One Left Behind” achievement
  • Fixed an issue that made it impossible to interrupt a survivor installing a Brand New Part

Along with that patch, a second patch was release that adds two balance fixes to generators as well as retouches legacy clothing for better quality.

EA: Titanfall 2 Sales Didn’t Meet Expectations but Still “Sold Very Well”

While Titanfall 2 might have won over critics when it was released in October of last year, it was unfortunately pushed out by publisher EA at the worst possible window given it was sandwiched between EA’s own Battlefield 1, and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Obviously, competing in the same release window as two of arguably gaming’s biggest franchises will affect Titanfall 2 sales given it’s a relatively newcomer.

During EA’s financial earnings call for the year, EA executive Blake Jorgensen confirmed that Titanfall 2 sales didn’t meet the publisher’s expectations, but it still “sold well.”

I think most people know that Battlefront, or excuse me, Battlefield 1 last year was a smash success for us and we had a huge Q3 because of that. We also had Titanfall, which while it didn’t meet our original expectation, still sold very well.

Hopefully, future entries in the franchise will be given a better release window than Titanfall 2, given the game does have a sizable player base. In case you’re wondering, Respawn has confirmed that we’ll be seeing more Titanfall in the future, which is a good thing for franchise fans (like me!).  We might have to wait for a while though given the studio is currently working on a Star Wars game for EA, and a VR game for the Oculus Rift.

In other Titanfall 2 news, Respawn has rolled the “Tricks and Treats” patch just the other day, which is the first of the three patches scheduled to drop before the year’s done.

New Overwatch Update Hits PTR Buffing Ana, Nerfing Mercy & Fixing Bugs

An Overwatch update has hit the PTR, buffing Ana, nerfing Mercy, and fixing a bunch of bugs. This patch can be experienced right now on the PC Public Test Region. Once it has been deemed suitable for a full build release, it will be rolled out across all platforms.

Give the full list of patch notes a read:

Please note that the below patch notes only include changes currently available for testing on the PTR. While many of these changes will also be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in a future patch, the PTR is PC-only and therefore will only reflect changes coming specifically to that platform.

HERO UPDATES

Ana

  • Biotic Rifle
    • Damage increased from 60 to 70

Developer Comment: Ana has been outshined by other support heroes lately. Boosting her damage will help her defend herself and make her more threatening to the enemy team.

Mercy

  • Resurrect
    • Cast time increased from 0 seconds to 1.75 seconds
    • Mercy’s movement speed is now reduced by 75% while casting
    • an now be interrupted when Mercy is knocked back, stunned, or hacked
  • Valkyrie
    • When activated, Resurrection no longer has a cast time

Developer Comment: We feel that Mercy’s recent rework has been successful, but her Resurrect ability still feels too strong and frustrating to play against. Now that it has a cast time, there is more room for enemies to counter the ability. However, casting Resurrect happens instantly when Valkyrie is active. This should make her feel powerful when she transforms on the battlefield.

BUG FIXES

  • Fixed several issues that prevented the announcer voice lines from playing correctly in Competitive, Elimination, and Capture the Flag game modes
  • Fixed an issue causing Roadhog’s Chain Hook to latch on to enemy players for longer than intended

What do you think of this Overwatch patch? Happy or sad to see Mercy getting hit with yet another nerf? Let us know below.

In other Overwatch news, the game’s roadmap details the addition of eSports tools to make matches more watchable, the player count recently hit 35 million, and a copycat game developer is being sued by Blizzard

Destiny 2 Level Cap Increase Confirmed, Curse of Osiris Expansion Will Offer a Boost

During the PlayStation Paris Games Week 2017 conference, Bungie showcased the Destiny 2 Curse of Osiris expansion with a first-look trailer. Upon watching the trailer and lowering the playback speed a bit, players have spotted a number of returning Exotic weapons and other nods towards past experiences (The Lighthouse, for example!).

As these teaser trailers tend to do, it also asked more questions than it answered. Happily, Bungie has gone ahead and provided a little more information about the upcoming expansion.

Curse of Osiris is set to launch on December 5 and will increase the Player Level cap from 20 to 25, while also boosting the maximum possible Power Level from 305 to 330. (It’s unclear if that’s with or without legendary mods.)

Upon landing on Mercury, players will gain access to the Infinite Forest patrol zone. Ikora will return to guide players through the new quests, along with Sagira, Osiris’ Ghost, which is voiced by Morena Baccarin (Firefly, Homeland), as well as Brother Vance, a returning Destiny 1 character.

For a refresher on what else the expansion will include, here’s the official rundown:

Destiny 2 – Expansion I: Curse of Osiris, takes place after the conclusion of the Destiny 2 campaign where you are dispatched to Mercury on a quest to find Osiris, the most powerful Warlock to have ever lived, to discover the answers humanity needs to fight back against the Vex.

Curse of Osiris adds a new chapter to the world of Destiny 2, expanding the universe by adding an all-new cinematic story with new and returning characters, a new destination to explore, Mercury and its Infinite Forest, a new social space to visit called the Lighthouse, new missions, new strikes, new raid content, new free roam activities, a world quest to complete, and more.

Are you excited for the new adventures that await in Curse of Osiris?

In other Destiny 2 news, the weekly reset has just occurred, the Curse of Osiris expansion got a new trailer and release date, and the Destiny 2 Raid was beaten by a clan of deaf gamers
