Final Fantasy XVI Development Delayed Almost Half a Year Due to COVID-19, Next Big Reveal Planned for Spring 2022

Those looking forward to new info regarding Final Fantasy XVI, you’ll have to continue waiting. While Square Enix promised more info about the game will be revealed this 2021, the on-going global COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a monkey wrench into the dev team’s plans, and the new reveal plan is set in spring of 2022!

This was announced by Final Fantasy XVI Producer Naoki Yoshia who penned a letter to fans apologizing for the no-show this year.

https://twitter.com/finalfantasyxvi/status/1475335618905669635

While this is definitely a bummer for those who want to know more about the franchise’s mainline sixteenth entry, it’s hard to blame the devs, as the on-going pandemic has made work harder for almost everyone, and that includes game development.

Pero Wikipedia:

Final Fantasy XVI (or Final Fantasy 16) is set in the fantasy world of Valisthea, where the people live comfortably thanks to mountains of crystal called the Mothercrystals. The world is controlled by six factions: the Grand Duchy of Rosaria, the Holy Empire of Sanbreque, the Kingdom of Waloed, the Dhalmekian Republic, the Iron Kingdom, and the Crystalline Dominion. A central part of the plot are the Eikons, summoned monsters controlled by or manifesting through humans called Dominants.[1]

The main cast includes Clive Rosfield, Joshua Rosfield, and Jill Warrick. Clive is the firstborn child of the Archduke of Rosaria who embarks on a quest for revenge after tragic events involving the dark Eikon Ifrit. Joshua Rosfield, Clive’s younger brother, is the Dominant of the Eikon Phoenix and heir apparent to Rosaria. Jill Warrick, a woman from the fallen Northern Territories is Clive and Joshua’s foster sister and confidant.[2] Gameplay has Clive fighting using a combination of melee-based sword attacks and magical abilities

You can check out the game’s reveal trailer where we see snippets of gameplay as well as cinematics:

FFXVI has no firm release date yet and is only confirmed for release on the PS5.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon Has Been Announced Again, This Time as a First-Person Open World RPG

Well, here’s something you don’t see happen in game development everyday: Originally announced as a deck building game, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon has now turned into a full-fledge open world RPG, as developers Awaken Realms Digital have re-announced the game, and its huge departure from its original vision.

In a surprise holiday update, Awaken Realms Digital published a lengthy Steam post apologizing to fans for the lack of updates on Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. Well, seems like there was a pretty BIG reason for that as the title has now completely shifted genres as shown in the new teaser video.

And although the new direction isn’t the deck building game that was originally announced a few years back, the team did take the time to clear up a few things.

So… Yes! Everything about the game’s presentation has changed.

At the same time: no, we’re not changing the game’s core. Tainted Grail will be a dark fantasy epic full of meaningful choices. Only now we’re able to make it even bigger and better than ever before.

Our goals for Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon were always pretty simple: we want to honor the choices of our players and give them as much freedom as we possibly can.

As for those who Tainted Grail Conquest under the pretense that they would be getting Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon for free, don’t worry, as the studio is still honoring that deal (cut-off was Nov 27, 2020) despite the change in direction.

As for when we can expect The Fall of Avalon to drop? Well, no release date was given, though the team is targeting Q4 of 2022 for early access.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon Screenshots

We should be hearing more on the title in the coming months as the team prepares for deeper dives into its gameplay and open-world mechanics.

Battlefield 5 Overtakes Battlefield 2042 in Player Count During the Christmas Holiday

Despite being the latest in the franchise, Battlefield 2042’s popularity since launch has seen a sharp decline, as the Battlefield 2042 player base grew frustrated with the current state of the title. So much so, that its predecessor is seeing a rise in players, which is to the detriment (somewhat) of the latest Battlefield game. While initially looked down upon the community, Battlefield 5 seems to be picking up steam and has now overtaken BF2042 in the Steam charts on Christmas day in terms of concurrent players online.

Taking a look at the latest player data provided by Steam for both Battlefield 2042 and Battlefield 5, we can see that during today’s peak, Battlefield 5 has landed at roughly 25K, whilst Battlefield 2042 sits at just 18.8K.

While for the month of December as a whole, Battlefield 2042 has managed to stay ahead for the most part with Battlefield 5 maintaining a relatively close trail (by couple of thousands) of players to 2042 up until Christmas Eve and Christmas day where it overtook the newly released title. The spike for Battlefield 2042 during December 17-20 was due to a free play weekend offered by the company.

While the Steam charts don’t spell the picture on other platforms, in the very least they should be a telling sign of the general community and their feeling towards the latest Battlefield entry. It’s more likely than not that BF2042042 is seeing a similar decline on consoles, though whether Battlefield 5 is seeing the same rise on these platform remains to be seen. That said, consoles or not, it’s still impressive that a Battlefield game originally shunned by the community, is now picking up steam, years after launch.

Since the release of Battlefield 2042, BF5 has seen a resurgence of players despite it being over three years old, and DICE being done with releasing any major content. It saw its last major update in Fall of 2020 with a few smaller ones to follow after for additional fixes. Leading into 2021, DICE made the decision to end support so that they could focus entirely on the release of the soon to be revealed Battlefield 2042.

Is BF5 overtaking BF2042 on the Steam charts worrying for Battlefield 2042’s playerbase? Sound off below and let us know.

Horizon Forbidden West ESRB Rating Released; Mentions Violence & Alcohol for T Rating

With Horizon Forbidden West’s file size and pre-load date now out in the wild, it looks like Guerrilla Games’ upcoming high-profile action game is shaping up nicely. Having said that, the official Horizon Forbidden West ESRB rating has surfaced as well, which bodes well for the game’s development and whatnot.

The Entertainment Software Raings Board has rated the game as “T” for Teen, and mentions violence and people being drunk as basis for the rating. Check out the offiical ratings summary below.

Horizon Forbidden West ESRB Rating Summary

This is an action-adventure game in which players assume the role of a hero (Aloy) traveling to discover the source of a mysterious signal. From a third-person perspective, players traverse post-apocalyptic environments/landscapes, complete quests, interact with characters, and engage in combat against enemy tribes and robotic creatures. Players use slingshots, bows, javelins, and spears to kill enemies in frenetic combat. Puffs of blood are depicted as human enemies are hit; blood stains also appear underneath bodies in some environments. Players can also perform stealth attacks (e.g., spear impalement) to eliminate enemies discreetly. Cutscenes depict additional acts of violence: a character impaled by swords or spears; a character crushed to death by a statue. The game depicts drunk characters stumbling around, and in one area stating, “I’m inebriated”; one cutscene depicts Aloy drinking beer from a mug; several background characters are seen drinking alcohol in taverns. The word “sh*t” is heard in the game.

Nothing surprisingin the ratings summary, I admit, but anything Forbidden West is good news for those of us eagerly looking forward to the game (like this guy).

Horizon: Forbidden West will be releasing February 18, 2022 for the PS4, and PS5.

Abandoned Tech Demo First Teaser Image Released

Earlier today, developer Blue Box Game Studios announced their 2022 plans for the mysterious PS5 exclusive, Abandoned. With a tech demo planned alongside a full reveal, and then with a prologue game set to happen during Q1 2022 all brewing, the studio has finally given players a peek, as we now have our very first look at the studio’s tech demo.

If you missed the news, Blue Box Studios announced today that they had plans to start 2022 off with some major updates for their upcoming Abandoned project. While no firm dates were given outside of Q1 2022, Blue Box did say they would be releasing a promised Abandoned prologue game, as well as a reveal of the actual title, with a tech demo coming to players first. Here’s what they had to say concerning the tech demo.

With the start of the new year, we begin with a Tech Demo in the Realtime Experience app via a patch update bundled with a redesigned Realtime Experience app for a better user experience. The Tech Demo demonstrates the technology behind Abandoned in realtime showcasing visuals, audio and the DualSense Wireless Controllers’ haptic feedback feature that adds a new layer to the horror experience.

Despite not providing any glimpse of this on the studio’s blog, over on the PS5 console and PlayStation App news feed for the application, Blue Box have given us our first look at this very tech demo.

The text for the image reads:

We are preparing the Tech Demoinside the Realtime Experience app. A notification will be sent once the patch is ready.

Not a whole lot to go off of here, and judging from the game’s official description this most likely isn’t the main character.

The story. The story is centered around Jason Longfield, who wakes up in a strange forest. Abandoned and not remembering how he got there, Jason soon finds out that he was kidnapped and brought there for a dark purpose. Fighting for his survival, his main goal is escape.
As always, we will be sure to keep an eye on this one and should any new development be made we will update you all.

Battlefield 2042 Product Placement Playercards Have Began Surfacing

While product placement is not new to the world of video games, it seems this has seeped its way into DICE’s latest shooter, Battlefield 2042. Players have spotted Battlefield 2042 product placement playercards that are active in the game.

One Reddit user has pointed out that in one match, they saw a playercard where the Logitech G502 mouse was being advertised:

Apparently, this Logitech cosmetic bundle also comes with two weapon skins, an EABB Wildcard skin, and the playercard shown above,

What makes this even more funny is that the produt was being advertised to PS5 console gamers who don’t need the mouse at all. If anyone thinks this is a move by EA to earn from Battlefield 2042, it’s not entirely that, as this practice has been present in past Battlefield games too! DANNYonPC has provided a pic where it shows product placement in past games:

Will we see more real-life product placement in Battlefield 2042? I wouldn’t bet against it. As long as it’s not affecting gameplay, I honestly am OK with it.

What I am not OK with though? The report from datamined info that players won’t see Season 1 of B42042 start until March 2022, which is a tad too long without any new major new content for a game focused on “live services.”

Are you OK with product placement in games or not at all? Share your thoughts about it, below.

Thanks, ruedyger & DANNYonPC!

This engram can be focused into any currently available trials loot you have previously obtained, or it can be taken to Master Rahool for a random Trials drop. Your reputation increases after every match completion, based on the amount of round-wins on your card, regardless of the result of that match itself (win or lose, 0-5 or 5-4).

Once you have gone flawless, keep playing! Every win on your still-flawless card will give you a chance at bonus, additional post-match drops of the Adept weapon for that week. Once you lose a game, you will no longer get these adept drops. However, still winning games at 7 wins even on a non-flawless can can drop bonus trials engrams, prisms, and even ascendant shards.

Titanfall 2 Custom Servers Are Finally Here, Available to Play on PC

Titanfall is not having the best year due to many issues and controversies, but finally a silver lining appears with the release of Titanfall 2 custom servers! Released by dedicated players of the Respawn Entertainment shooter, the custom servers allow players on PC to enjoy Titanfall 2 multiplayer once again without fear of online attacks that the official servers were subjected to over the course of the year.

The announcement comes from the ‘Save Titanfall’ Twitter account, a person (or group) invested in documenting the game’s troubles and raising awareness across the playerbase. Check out the tweet below:

Called Northstar, the custom servers can be accessed by everyone on PC, allowing dedicated players to once again play Titanfall 2 with other people online! You can check it out via the official GitHub page, complete with an informative wiki that should help those who are unfamiliar with game modding to acess these custom servers.

On the possibility of attacks, Save Titanfall had this to say:

I’ve seen a few people asking if this “gets rid of attacks”, and the short answer is yes. If an attacker wants to crash your server, they will have to track down the server’s IP address. Private games not on the master server will be impossible to track down & crash.

In case you missed it and do not know the context behind the need for custom servers, both Titanfall and Titanfall 2 have fallen victim earlier this year to frequent DDoS attacks from an entity who are quite irate with Respawn Entertainment. An exploit was also found which can be seemingly used to crash players’ games. A few weeks ago, Respawn pulled the original Titanfall from digital storefronts, with plans to remove the game across subscription services starting March of next year.

It’s also worth noting that Respawn has all but seemingly left development of the game, with the developer noting that they have ‘nothing’ planned for Titanfall 3, and with only one to two people left working on the franchise as a whole. While things may look bleak for the future of Titanfall as a whole, here’s hoping that the community finds these Titanfall 2 custom servers a welcome holiday present for those still itching to play the game online.

Let us know what you think of Titanfall 2 and the future of the franchise down in the comments below!

GTA The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition PS4 Physical Copy Cannot Be Upgraded to PS5 Version

GTA The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has seen its fair share of issues that have been mostly addressed with patches, but the latest one will possibly upset those who waited for physical versions on the PlayStation 4. As noted by some players on the platform, it appears that the GTA The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition PS4 physical copy does not offer a free upgrade to the PS5 version.

This information has been brought up by Twitter user Ben Turpin who created a thread on the game’s physical release back when it launched on December 17.

Everyone can finally buy a physical version of the GTA Trilogy in most retail stores – but there’s a catch. You can’t upgrade to the PS5 version if you decide to pickup the physical version.

I strongly advise against buying it until the game is improved with more patches.

https://twitter.com/videotech_/status/1471813921334083584

What’s perhaps more disappointing for PlayStation players is that Ben also confirms that the Xbox physical copy offers a free Xbox Series upgrade, in stark contrast to the PS4.

If you buy the Xbox One version, the free upgrade to the Series X|S version is available right out of the box.

Not sure why Rockstar aren’t giving PS5 owners a free upgrade.

https://twitter.com/videotech_/status/1471814306039844867

Another Twitter user by the name of Wes Fido has tried to ask Rockstar Support if this is a bug or an intended feature, and they have confirmed that this is the latter.

What’s baffling is that if you purchased GTA The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition digital version on the PlayStation Store, you will be entitled to both the PS4 and PS5 versions. It’s unclear why Rockstar has not allowed the same for the physical version, but nevertheless this may come as a huge downside for those looking to play the game on the PS5 via the disc release.

Hunter’s Arena Legends Update 1.13 Patch Notes; Out for Patch 1.14 December Update

Here’s a weird one: Mantisco has released the Hunter’s Arena Legends update 1.13 (PS5 version 1.130) patch which the studio calls Update 1.14 (for some unknown reason), and is called the game’s December Update. This brings a new game mode, new character effects, a Pet syste, and more. Check out the official patch notes below.

Hunter’s Arena Legends Update 1.13 Patch Notes | Hunter’s Arena Legends Update 1.130 Patch Notes | Hunter’s Arena Legends Update 1.14 Patch Notes | Hunter’s Arena Legends December Update Patch Notes:

Thank you for waiting.  Here is the patch note for the 1.14 update which brings you a new game mode Conquest along with Pet System and brand new character effects.

CONQUEST MODE

In Conquest Mode, three players team up to play against another team to gain control of three points for victory.

Maps
Conquest Mode takes place in one of 8 spots of the Battle Royale map.  It will be randomly chosen for each game.  Here are the 8 spots.

The Temple in the North of Ancient Altar
The Fortress in the South of Ancient Altar
Plundered Legacy
Abandoned Village
Fanatic Ruins
Snake Path Shrine
Tomb of Swords
Sealed Fortress

Game Rules

As the barrier disappears, the game starts.
Each team starts with 1,000 points, and your score decreases every second if the enemy team gains control of a control point. ( Each of the three control points decreases a different value per second.)

If you die, you will be revived at the starting area after 10 seconds.
Your job is to conquer and protect control points at all costs while trying to stay alive.

Each character starts with the same fixed stats without any consumable items.  The outcome depends purely on your skills and strategies.

The team whose score drops to 0 loses.
If 10 minutes have passed, the one with a higher score wins.

Here are other elements that will impact the outcome of the game.

Treasure Goblin:  Killing a treasure goblin regains a certain points of your team’s score.  Treasure goblin is summoned about five minutes after the game begins.

Boss: A boss is summoned in a random spot.  Killing a boss makes your enemy team’s score decrease drastically.  A boss is summoned about 8 minutes after the game begins.

ENERGY SYSTEM

You can now gain Energy when you kill a monster in Solo or Trio Battle Royale Mode.

You can check how much Energy you have absorbed at the result window.
Up to 50 Energy can be absorbed in a single game.

PETS

We now have pets in Hunter’s Arena.  You can bring a pet to your Solo or Trio Battle Royale game, who will pick up items for you.

There are three different tiers of pets, High, Mid, and Low.  Your pet’s tier impacts how wide they search for items and how close they follow you

Pets can be purchased with either SP or Energy.

We have a plan to add boss characters as pets in the future update, so stay tuned for that as well.

EFFECTS

New character effects are added which can be equipped for your character’s eye, arms, or legs.

SEASON 3 AND CONQUEST TOURNAMENT

Hope you had a good time playing Season 2.
Season 3 is coming soon which will include Conquest Mode.

In the meantime, we will have a pre-season period.
As soon as we are ready for Season 3, we will give you a heads-up.

With the start of Season 3, a tournament for Conquest Mode will be held as well.
Use this pre-season period to master your skills and prepare for the tourney.

That’s it for this patch note. Thank you for the read and your continuous support.
We will continue our best efforts to make Hunter’s Arena a better game.

Don’t Starve Together Update 2.33 Released for December 23

Klei has released the Don’t Starve Together update 2.33 this December 23, which is an unannounced title update, so don’t expect any new content. Check out what’s new in the info we’ve collected below.

Don’t Starve Together Update 2.33 Patch Notes:

Klei has not released the official changelog for the December 23 update as the studio normally does, HOWEVER, there have been a bunch of bug fixes for the PC version of the game that was released after the Winter’s Feast title update for consoles. We’re assuming that some of the smaller fixes have been rolled into today’s update for consoles, and have compiled them below.

Dec. 18:

Bug Fixes:

  • Wilson’s Merrymaker beard is no longer required for his Merrymaker ensemble Reward emote.
  • Tuned the potato sack ingredients
  • The bell on the gym only shows for the exerciser.
  • Fixed various skins related texture bugs.
  • Fixed mouseover issue on Drying Racks.

Dec. 17:

Winter’s Feast 2021 ornaments will drop
Fixed a crash when wolfgang drowns when working out on the gym
Dec. 17:
  • Fixed missing skinned items on gym when it’s being used.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Wolfgang to not transform properly when sleeping.
  • Fixed a missing string when Wolfgang attempted to work out while hungry.
  • Missing ornaments have been added to the game, and will be accessible in the next hotfix.
  • A few items were missed from a couple of shop chests. We’re adding them to the chests now, and users that missed out will have the items added to their inventory. This retroactive granting of missed items will take place over the next 24 hours. We’ll also be granting some bonus Spools to the affected users as they may have lost out by weaving the items.
    • Added missing Wanda Merrymaker items to shop chests.
    • Added Woven variant of Wolfgang’s Riding Boots. This item will also be added to the appropriate Wolgang shop chests.

If we get new info regarding this patch, we’ll be sure to update the post. If you spot anything, share something in the comments or send us an email to let us know.

Dolmen Hands-On Preview – In Space, Everyone Can Hear You Scream

Massive Work Studio with the help of Prime Matter as publisher, is entering the crowded Souls-like genre with Dolmen, a very Souls-like game that as sci-fi theme. Does it fill the bill? Is it a worthy entry in the genre so far? Thankfully, we don’t have to wait until release to know more about it, as MP1st has been invited to test the game out ourselves during a media-only session. How does it play so far? Read on.

Space Souls

If you’ve played one of the many Souls games out there, then undoubtedly Dolmen will feel like a right fit for you. In fact, Dolemen is essentially a Souls game as it builds off the same gameplay loops of dying, dodging, leveling up, and dying again that the Souls franchise is known for. And while the industry is no stranger to giving us Souls clones, at the very least Dolmen does bring some interesting ideas to the table to help set it apart in ways that may be worth keeping tabs on.

Set in a sci-fi universe, you play as a character simply known as the “Driller” who is tasked with collecting resources called Dolmen that are used for interdimensional travel. Sent off to a mysterious planet, it doesn’t take very long after arrival to realize that something has gone awry as monsters from other dimensions begin seeping in. It’s up to you to eliminate these monsters and collect the precious resources they grown attached to.

While you shouldn’t be expecting AAA quality tier development, I am left impressed by the work done by Massive Work Studio. Starting off, the performance provided from the build was generally rock solid. A big complaint that many fans of the genre are all too familiar with these lower budget-inspired Souls games.

And on a visual standpoint, I think Dolmen looks fantastic as environments are filled with details with great usage of both coloring and lighting throughout. I especially loved the general aesthetics of the first section of the preview, as it blended the man-made environments with the no overgrown nesting of the invading spider-like species.

Again this is a budget title so the expectations in terms of pushing graphical prowess should still be in check. Still, I think many will come to enjoy the variety-filled locations. But of course this being a Souls clone, the gameplay is where everything truly lies, and in this regard, Massive Work has knocked it out of the park based from the time we had with it so far.

Controls feel tight and responsive, but most of all, fun to actually use. Rolling around, dodging, and then slashing enemies in a precise manner should be all familiar with Souls fans, though Dolmen adds a focus on gunplay as well. While you can get away with running up and hacking away at a monster, the range game is pretty critical as it allows you fend against hoards of enemies efficiently. I’ve used the gun a ton during my preview as not only did it help with DPS, but provides stuns to follow up with quick attacks from my melee weapon. While some may view this as making the game “easier,” it does get managed by an energy bar, which can be completely depleted if you aren’t paying attention.

Interestingly, the gun isn’t the only mechanic to use up energy, as there is an energy mode that imbues the player in an equipped elemental state. This boosts attack power as well as gives them elemental buffs, which depending on the enemy, provides additional weakness. Stamina is also “unlimited,” though this is due to energy mode consuming energy in its place. The energy mode is a fun little way to mix up the gameplay.

A high praise feature that I didn’t get to test out but saw was the that we could respawn bosses after defeating them. This is my major gripe with any Souls game out there. If I wanted to fight a boss again to farm material, then I would be required to beat, and start a fresh run again. Dolmen solves that by allowing the use “Dolmen Fragments,” which will respawn the boss of that area. Talk about a farmer’s dream, right? I think so.

I will say the one thing I do hope the developers address (or change by release) is how players level up. At the moment, Dolmen features Beacons, (aka the game’s version of Bonfires). These are spread throughout locations and serve as resting points, which upon activation will restore all health, as well as respawn all dead enemies. However, in order to level up you must first visit these Beacons, and then use one to teleport you back to your ship, in which case the leveling up option becomes available via terminal.

It works in the same way Demon’s Souls did where you go back to the hub and visit the Maiden in Black, or how Dark Souls did it with Emerald Harold. However, it’s a mechanic that has since evolved, allowing players to level up directly from these Bonfire locations. I feel that as of current, the way it’s handled in Dolmen breaks too much of the gameplay pacing apart. While I understand the team wanting players to visit the ship for other reasons, I do feel there is a major quality of life improvement that can be addressed here by allowing players to level up from these Beacons and immediately get back into the action. Whether that does get changed, who knows, but there certainly could be worse things to complain about, so it’s not all bad.

Final Thoughts

While I don’t expect Dolmen to be pushing the Douls/roguelite genres in any new direction, for what I got to play and experience, I think there’s a lot of potential here. It’s fun and the whole space setting is always a fascinating one to tackle.

Like I said early, don’t go into Dolmen expecting a massive AAA budget. With that said, I do think Souls fans will be quite happy with what Massive Work Studio has done. Hopefully that remains true when it releases sometimes in 2022.

MP1st played Dolmen via a private, invite-only digital event hosted by the publisher.
