So what is Champion Hill? Here’s the official primer from Activision:

Champion Hill — The Basics

In 2019, Infinity Ward broke ground through Modern Warfare® Multiplayer with Gunfight, a new mode based on quick-action, close-quarter small-squad combat that is easy to learn but hard to master. For the next two years, both IW and Treyarch continued to innovate, introducing the concept of Gunfight Tournaments to reward the best Duos with exclusive rewards and allowing the mode’s frenetic small-scale maps to see action in more traditional modes like Team Deathmatch in playlists like Face-Off.

Now, Sledgehammer Games introduces Champion Hill, a tournament-style, multi-map and multi-life game mode where tactics and strategy go beyond the pull of a trigger.

In Champion Hill, your squad — either a Duo (2v2) or Trio (3v3) during the Alpha — will compete in a round-robin deathmatch tournament against other squads. Your mission is to reduce all other squads’ life count to zero before your whole squad is eliminated.

Everyone starts with the same Loadout, and while it can be lethal, collecting Cash — earned by taking enemy lives and picking up drops scattered around the map — will allow you to upgrade your starting weapons and purchase new armaments, equipment, Perks, and Killstreaks during Buy Rounds that happen between Combat Rounds.

Champion Hill also takes place on one large map split up into five sections. Specifically, there is a central Buy Station Area and four arenas for Combat Rounds: the Airstrip, the Trainyard, the Market, and the Courtyard. Once you are eliminated, you can watch how the tournament ends from the Buy Station Area spectator platform, but ideally, you survive long enough to see victory for yourself.

There will be an in-depth guide to Champion Hill before the alpha kicks off on August 27!

Will I get anything for participating in the Vanguard alpha test?

All participants will receive a Calling Card and an Emblem, accessible in Call of Duty: Vanguard upon its release – as well as Warzone following the integration of Vanguard – just for being the “tip of the spear” and participating in the Alpha.

How to Access the Alpha

Those who have Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare®Call of Duty®: Warzone™, or Call of Duty®: Black Ops Cold War installed can access the Call of DutyVanguard Alpha through the main menu after it is downloaded.

Within any of those released game’s menus, selecting the Alpha menu blade — to the far left of the main menu screen — either brings you to the Alpha to jump in and play if you’ve already downloaded, or redirects you to its download page on the PS Store.

Once we have more details regarding Champion Hill later this week, we’ll let our readers know.

Call of Duty Vanguard PS5 Early Access Beta to Use PS4 Version

It’s no secret by now that those who pre-order Call of Duty Vanguard on PlayStation platforms will be able to play the early access beta, regardless if you pre-ordered the PS4 or PS5 version. However, it seems that for those looking foward to the Vanguard PS5 beta, you might want to temper expectations on the graphics and whatnot, as you’ll be using the PS4 game version during the early access period.

This was mentioned in the Call of Duty Vanguard pre-order page if you click the the PlayStation version:

As you can see, it mentions “Early Access to the Open Beta, first on PlayStation 4.” In case you think it’s a typo, here’s a look at the Xbox version’s pre-order table:

As you can see, it doesn’t mention the Xbox One version at all when it comes to beta early access. We don’t know for now whether this means that a PS5 Vanguard beta client will be rolled out by Activision in time for the regular open beta or not.

Fortunately, chances are, most Call of Duty players are going to jump into the beta to experience the gunplay, progression system, maps and the like, so not being able to play the PS5 version might not be a problem for most.

For the rest of the stuff you can get for pre-ordering COD Vanguard, head on over here.

Call of Duty Vanguard will be released this November 5 on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Thanks, ModernWarzone!

Tribes of Midgard PS5 Review – For the Glory of Valhalla!

What is Tribes of Midgard? A survival game? A horde mode style game? Roguelite? City defense? Hack and Slash? The answer, all of those and developers Norsfell does a fantastic job at blending all the genres into one enjoyable co-operative experience. If you’re curious what kind of game it is, or more importantly, if it’s a game worth paying and playing, then read on for our Tribes of Midgard review.

Ragnarök Has Arrived

Taking place in a Midgard village, you start your journey off as an underwear wearing Viking whose sole purpose is to protect the seed of Yggdrasil, or more commonly known as the World Tree. By day, you’ll scavenge the large open world, solo, or with up to nine other players in hopes of getting stronger, building better defenses, and preparing for the imminent doom of Ragnarök. That’s the gist of it, and if you go in expecting some heavy, world-building story then you’ll end up feeling a bit letdown.

However, that’s not what Tribes of Midgard put itself out as, but instead as a massive, almost survival MMO-ish open world where teamwork is an absolute must.

My journey into the world of Tribes of Midgard starts me off in the Saga mode, the game’s main beef. While solo play is entirely possible, Tribes of Midgard does empathize that playing in co-op is a sure way to victory as the mode has some intensely leveled beasts and other challenges.

Similar to many other survival games, you will immediately set off into the world searching for resources and rare loot to better yourself. However, unlike most survival games you don’t have to worry about random players showing up and striking you down on sight as everyone is working together towards the same goal; protect the seed of Yggdrasil at all cost.

As someone who is all too familiar with the survival genre, and by that I mean I’m no fan, I thought it was a nice refreshing change knowing that the player nearby was likely going to help rather than rob me of all my loot, and leave me as a nude corpse rotting in the middle of nowhere (looking at you, DayZ survivors).

Instead, in most matches I played, everyone journeyed with one another, tackling the many foes in the world, and earning some high level gear. There’s no PvP, and soon after a full day (in-game) nightfall fell, and it became abundantly clear why there is so much focus on the co-operative aspect.

At night, demonic Helthings spawn and the game quickly goes from being a scavenging survival, to a city defense. Hoards after hoards of these creatures swarm the town, hoping to kill off the world tree and thus bringing the end of Midgard.

The first couple of nights aren’t so bad as long as everyone sticks together, but as each passing day goes, the difficulty quickly ramps up. This includes throwing massive, stalking giants known as Jotnar who slowly make their way to the village. They’re tough, but so satisfying to defeat.

Eventually, when you hit Day 14, the match will enter a state called Fimbulwinter, which is a very cold endless night mode. You’re probably going to die, as this essentially serves as the end of all things; though if you’re strong enough, and have a full team equipped with the right gear, you can probably survive a good couple of days. There are some rewards even tied to surviving for long durations.

It sticks with the Norse Mythology, as Ragnarök is supposed to be the end of Midgard, only for it to start over again. An endless loop just like Tribes of Midgard. So survival isn’t really the end goal here, but instead taking on what the game calls “Saga Quests.”

Saga Quests are seasonal, with the first one being tied to the Norse beast Fenrir — a giant wolf who is prophesied to swallow the sun. To get to him you will need to complete a series of quests, and collect a large amount of resources in order to build a bridge to his secret lair. Once you do, a rather difficult battle will ensue, and if you’re equipped for it, you’ll find it to be a very satisfying fight.

Saga Quests are a very interesting way to keep the game fresh with worthwhile content. They take a long time to complete, but the reward earned is well worth the cost.

I will say, I am curious how Norsfell will address past Saga bosses once a new season begins, as I assume it means they will rotate them out, though I’m hopeful past ones stay as optional bosses you can take on during other seasons.

As for what else there is to do in the realm of Midgard besides collecting badass gear and slaying worthy foes, players can also take up a number of side quests offered from the village board. These aren’t all that interesting if I’m honest, as they mostly revolve around killing X enemy, or gathering and going to X location, but they make sense in the long game due to how time restrictive it feels, which does bring me to one of my gnawing annoyances.

I will say the biggest issue that players are going to notice is the sense of urgency. For as big and diverse as the world is, it sure feels like you don’t get a lot of time to explore it. And I’ll admit there isn’t a whole lot going on in the world outside of bandits and monsters lurking around, but that’s a bit part of the fun looking at these new areas in hopes of finding some good loot.

I always felt like I had to keep on going with on-going tasks in order to stand a chance in those night battles. I think a bit of tuning to how long the days are could do wonders, but at the same time I can understand wanting to keep matches within a reasonable time.

At the very least, Tribes of Midgard does have a second mode called Survival, which does allow players to have an endless amount of time before taking on the difficult task. In fact, while this mode can be played with other players, the solo adventurer will definitely resonate with it more as it’s completely customizable.

You can change the map size, enemy difficulty, amongst other options. I personally loved this mode a ton, though I did find myself still playing Saga Mode for the more hectic action-filled gameplay. That’s not to say Survival doesn’t offer a challenge, it’s just a whole lot more manageable, especially in solo play.

In fact, I think Survival mode is an excellent way to familiarize yourself with the many classes available. In total, there are eight classes, some available from the very start while others require specific perquisites to unlock. For the most part these classes are the standard archetypes that you can expect from an ARPG-like title, and I found them all to be fun.

I played mostly as the Berserker because I really liked the explosive abilities the class had. There are tanks, range, and even caster-based classes. Again, most classes you find in other ARPG are present, though don’t expect them to be quite as deep, but nonetheless, they were all fun and enjoyable to use.

Gates of Valhalla

If you’re looking for something fresh, and fun to play with friends then Tribes of Midgard is the game to play. While it is a bit light in content at the moment, what Norsfell Games have created here is one beautiful mashup of different genres all in one package. While it’s not innovating, it certainly feels like a refreshing take.

I’m excited to see what the future holds for Tribes of Midgard, and hopefully it’s one that leads to the gate of Valhalla.

Pros:

  • Visuals are pretty, and really shine in the big boss battles.
  • Gameplay fun and easy, with variety to be found in the many classes.
  • Survival mode is excellent for the solo player experience.
  • Working as a team in co-op is pretty satisfying, especially with Saga boss fights.

Cons:

  • Light on content, but the road map shows a hefty amount coming.
  • Wasn’t a fan of the “haptic” feedback as the controller vibrated every step the player took. First game were I was more annoyed to have the feature.

A review code for Tribes of Midgard was provided by the publisher and played on PS5. You can read SP1st and MP1st’s review and scoring policy right here.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered Update 1.005 Swings Out for Ray Tracing Improvements

Insmoniac Games has released the Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered update 1.005 this August 21, and this seems to be only for the PS5 version of the game (PS4 is is still at 1.19). Given this is an unannounced update, don’t expect anything major from this patch.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered Update 1.005 Patch Notes:

While Insomniac Games has not released any official patch notes just yet, we reached out to the studio, and a rep told us that the patch is for:

Adds some stability and ray tracing improvements.

That’s about it for this patch. If things change or more stuff about it surfaces, we’ll update the post.

If you haven’t booted the game in a while, update 1.004 was released in February this year, and here are the changes in that patch:

Fixes & Updates

  • Addressed an issue where Spider-Man’s directional throw would not respect player input
  • Improved stability

For those who haven’t played the spin-off Miles Morales, you’re missing out! Check out our review here where we state, “Peter Park may be the original Spider-Man, someone that many will always think of when they hear the webslinger’s name. And while Peter strives to protect all of New York, he doesn’t truly represent everyone. He isn’t someone we can truly look up to and envision us behind the mask. Miles Morales is different. Miles is a Spider-Man who represents countless individuals who feel overlooked, unheard, and disrespected. A Spider-Man that understands the struggles that others might not.”

Report: Destiny 2 Witch Queen Info, Upcoming Content & Changes Leak Out

Destiny 2 Witch Queen information and other expansions have apparently leaked online, with various images containing their details now circulating Reddit. The leaks are huge in terms of content for Destiny 2, with the original poster on Reddit explaining that there’s even more out there, currently waiting to be uncovered. The leak first started on the RaidSecrets Discord server, where it was removed shortly after, with the server now banning leaks of any kind. This also confirms that the dataminer was correct in their leaking of the Season of the Lost content. You can check out the details for the leaked images below.

The first big takeaway from the leak is that Bungie has taken to assigning codenames for their upcoming Destiny 2 expansions: Nova is Witch Queen, Stardust was Beyond Light and Nebula is Light Fall.

Destiny 2 Age of Darkness Leaks:

destiny 2 witch queen

As the image itself is a little blurry, user Dioxety on Reddit has transcribed the relevant information in the screenshot. Quote:

Age of Darkness (white calendar looking screenshot): Darkness returns to Sol, revealing itself to be a powerful tool that Guardians can wield. Humanity’s views are shaken by new discoveries about the Light, Traveler, Darkness, and the Entity behind the Pyramids — The Witness. Destiny’s ultimate enemy revealed. It brings about a second Collapse, with the threat of something much worse. Guardians are left with new ??? (cant read/remember these 2 words, I think it’s like questions or something along that thought), and one last desperate hope.

The rest of the images showcase more of Project Stardust and Nova, as well as developer Bungie’s plans on the upcoming seasons for Destiny 2, especially the Witch Queen. Of particular note are upcoming reworks to Strikes, what seems to be an approved rework of the Iron Banner, Infamy, Glory and Trials reworks, and of course, brand-new Exotics to be added in the future.

Destiny 2 Codename ‘NOVA’ (Witch Queen) Upsell:

Same as with every datamined content, treat this one with a grain of salt, as none have been confirmed by Bungie.

Destiny’s 2 Season of the Lost, more commonly known as Season 15, is starting this coming week on consoles, PC and Stadia. A huge event for the game is also incoming this August 24.

Weapons

Conviction

We’re not looking at removing what makes the conviction special. The gun is special because it gains accuracy and becomes more effective in longer firefights. We want to keep that aspect of the Conviction intact, but reduce the accuracy ceiling so it doesn’t become such a laser beam.

  • Max Firing Accuracy gain has been reduced
  • Max Aimed Firing accuracy gain has been reduced
  • Accuracy gained per shot has been reduced

D3D-i

The D3D-i is a very lethal weapon that was previously capable of killing with 3 body shots at any range. Now beyond a distance of 30 meters this weapon will take an extra shot to kill.

  • Reduced damage from 34 to 30.
  • Increased damage falloff

24S

The 24s is a ‘jack of all trades’ SMG, though previously its accuracy and damage outside of optimal range was stronger than assault rifles within its optimal range. This change means that the 24s kills a little slower outside of its optimal range, and will no longer outgun assault rifles.

  • Increased damage falloff

KA30

Though originally the mainstay of the assault rifle class, with recent introductions the KA30 has fallen off. These changes should make it more competitive with the other weapons in its class.

  • Increased headshot damage from 29 to 31.
  • Increased damage from 18 to 22.
  • Reduced accuracy loss per shot.

SL-C

Similar to the 24s, the SLC was capable of killing faster than assault rifles outside of its optimal range. While this was challenging with the intense kick of the SL-C, one of the most close ranged SMGs should not be going head to head with assault rifles in their range.

  • Increased damage falloff outside of optimal range.

Sahara

The Sahara is an assault rifle that excels when the user hits every single shot. However, that was a little too easy and reliable, especially at range. This is only a very slight reduction, but the optimal Sahara kill-time will now require a little more finesse at the back end of its optimal range.

  • Increased accuracy loss per shot.

Rogues

Dallas

  • Replaced EMP with Adrenaline Shot

Seeker

  • Passive deals 2x damage now.

Gadgets

We made some adjustments to the projectile speed and gravity of the C4. The result is that C4 should now hit the ground sooner than it did before, but still have a very similar throwing distance and experience.

The PTS will be live from August 21st at 9:00 AM ET to August 23rd at 7:00 AM ET. Rogue Company is now available to play on current and last-gen consoles, the Nintendo Switch and PC.

Report: Halo Infinite Photo Mode, Weapons & Vehicles List, & More Datamined

A pretty big stack of datamined data from Halo Infinite has leaked online, and it contains a ton of new information about the game, which also confirms the existence of a Halo Infinite Photo Mode! The bulk of them came from renowned Halo insider on Twitter under the handle HaloLeaks, and they give expectant players a closer look of what we can all expect from Halo Infinite when it releases later this year.

The datamined leaks include a list of all the abilities in the game, selectable emotes, weapons, vehicles and campaign medals. An earlier leak from them also mentioned that the game will have a Photo Mode, but this one is probably the least surprising, as almost every modern AAA game nowadays have many ways to capture high-resolution and stylized screenshots.

Rogue Company Update 1.71 Sneaks Out

First Watch Games has released the Rogue Company update 1.71 patch this August 21, and this is after yesterday’s unannounced title update that brought in quite a few changes.

Rogue Company Update 1.71 Patch Notes:

Size: 3.8GB (PS4)

First Watch Games has not officiall touched on the changes included in today’s patch just yet, though we’re expecting an announcement for it later.

While we’re waiting for that, First Watch has confirmed a shake up when it comes to game modes this Monday, August 23!

Here’s what the studio has shared so far:

Team Deathmatch

Over the past several weeks, we have been keeping a close eye on the popularity of TDM. We like TDM because it empowers players to learn new Rogues, become familiar with new maps, and focus on a single goal: kill the enemy team. This mode has been hugely successful with our players, so on Monday, August 23th, we are making TDM a permanent mode for players on Steam, Epic Games, Xbox, and Playstation.

King of the Hill

Because we are rotating in 6v6 Team Deathmatch as a permanent mode, we will be rotating 6v6 King of the Hill (KOTH) out as a permanent game mode. While we feel that KOTH has many thrilling gameplay moments, two primary issues lead us to make this decision.

First, 6v6 KOTH is often chaotic, creating a frustrating player experience when teams try to determine how to position defensively in anticipation of the opposing players. Second, KOTH is often full of what we call “Utility Dumps,” or Gadget spam – a pain point for many players. We’re looking to reduce this issue in future iterations.

The good news is that our weekend tournaments have showcased to us the depth, teamwork, mastery, and incredible gameplay moments that 4v4 KOTH can create, and we’re excited to bring this mode back as our first LTM in the rotation.

An Update on Extraction

With all this talk about LTMs, you’re probably wondering what happened to Extraction. After being removed as a permanent game mode in the Switchblade Update, we told players that we would be adding Extraction into our Limited Time Mode (LTM) rotation. Unfortunately, Extraction’s debut in the LTM roster is taking longer than expected due to some much-needed bug squashing to prepare it for prime time.

———-

We’re excited for what promises to be an exciting remainder of the year, during which time we’ll be continuing to collect your feedback and update you as things shift. We hope you enjoy this change as you find new ways to save the day, look good, and get paid!

Once we know more details regarding today’s update, we’ll update the post.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut Easter Eggs Pays Homage to God of War and Sly Cooper

With Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, it seems not only did Sucker Punch Productions include new story missions, armor and pets, but it seems there are new Easter eggs from other Sony-owned gaming IPs added too! Gamers have spotted a few Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut Easter eggs that point to God of War, and even Sly Cooper!

Here’s one where you can see the palm print that should look familiar to fans of Sony Santa Monica’s 2018 game:

That’s the handprint of Krato’s late wife, Faye, in case you didn’t know. Here’s the one that’s in God of War:

If that’s not enough, Sucker Punch has also sneaked in one for Sly Cooper — the thieving raccoon that put the studio on the map!

Of course, Easter eggs aren’t new for Jin, as the original had quite a number of Easter eggs hidden throughout the world. Chances are, Iki Island has more hidden treasures yet to be unearthed.

For those who dig Ghost of Tsushima’s multiplayer mode, Legends, a free update is coming this September adding the “Rivals” mode.

Stay tuned to our review of Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut hitting the site soon!

Thanks, Francesco Delrio, PlayStation Discord!
