Biomutant Review – A Mixed Breed

While we’ve seen sprawling, open-world, action-RPGs before, developer Experiment 101 tries to buck that trend by having the protagonist be a mammal that’s not exactly human, but not exactly an animal, either. Think of it as a mutation of genres, ideas, gameplay mechanics and so on. The big question here is: does Biomutant evolve enough to warrant a purchase or is it stuck in the evolution phase and fails to progress further? The answer? It’s a mix of both, which we touch on in our Biomutant review, so read on!

Shadow of the Bio-Collosus

It’s the end of days as massive behemoths known as “world eaters” run rampant in the world, wreaking havoc with every passing minute. With the world tree on the verge of dying, a once unified people (well, more like furry mutants) have now been broken up into several tribes, some wanting to save the tree from the blood thirsty beasts, while others wishing to end it all in hopes of bringing something new.

This is where you come in; a user generated character who has been struck with a bad case of amnesia. With a world so unknown to you, the only rule you can truly live by is the one ruled by your fist.

Biomutant story isn’t one that particular stands out, and it falls a bit flat towards the end. It’s fun to go through for sure, but once you’ve beaten some world eaters, and captured countless outposts you begin to realize just how much dialogue gets repeated.

To make matters a bit more annoying, the entire game is narrated by David Shaw Parker. Now this is by no means saying that Parker’s voice is annoying, but it’s the fact that every spoken line is narrated by him, which is exhausting to say the least. Granted, this isn’t some major triple AAA game, but even still for one such as large as it is, a few different voices could have really gone a long way.

Furthermore, Biomutant seems to take a lot from other games (more on that later) that never feel realized. Dialogue from characters often lead to different selectable lines, but a nagging annoyance was that you never could learn everything there all was. For example, early on a character called Out-of-Date speaks to you about a weapon along with your past. You are then presented with options to learn more about either one, but only just one.

Traditionally, RPGs will loop back to these options, giving you the opportunity to learn all there is to learn. This mechanic is crucial in most games because they help you make the hard choices. Biomutant has choices, but often feel pointless since plenty of them can be reverted back. There is no narrative risks that actually feel like you are making a difference rather than a predetermined one.

This goes hand and hand with the Aura system, which is the game’s morality system. You can be either good or evil with decisions awarding points to either or. The thing is, it almost amounts to nothing other unlocking specific perks and mutations. The world doesn’t feel reactive to whatever side you gear more towards with, and dialogue shows this. I was max light, yet some characters were still speaking as if I was undecided. It just didn’t make sense from a narrative perspective outside of the ending, and even that, I can’t say paid off. There’s a story, but it doesn’t do a very good job at enticing you to stick with it.

Now I did enjoy the side stories from some of main side characters. With this being a game about mutated mammals, there is a lot to have fun. Characters are named funny with designs to match it, and the dialogue that’s there (no voices but text) match their personalities too. I certainly had a few laughs here and there, especially with some of the world’s side activities. You’ll find that Biomutant takes itself a whole lot less serious in that regard, which perhaps should have been more embedded into the main story.

Beauty on the Surface, Not So Much Underneath

When the Biomutant trailer first debuted back in 2017, I instantly knew I just had to play it. At the time, the game world presented itself with a kind of beauty that I have yet to see then, and honestly it still holds to even today.

There is a sheer amount of beauty to be found in Biomutant, every bit of it being picture worthy. From the opening act you are instantly thrown into a lush, vibrant forest filled with many different structural buildings. As you venture deeper into the world, you’ll soon come across sandy beaches, toxic wastelands, rocky mountains, and so much more. The amount of biomes and their variety and well articulated designs are truly sites to behold.

I could compare it to worlds such as Death Stranding, and Ghost of Tshushima where I could just spend countless hours wandering, taking in every visual awes the game could throw. I really is one of the best looking games I’ve played as of recent.

Sadly though, the world itself doesn’t offer a whole lot to accompany that beauty when it comes to the side activities. There is a lot to do in Biomutant, but it seems to take the quantity over quality approach as most side activities will be nothing but fetch quests and outposts liberations.

Tribes are littered everywhere, yet their side missions do very little to actually do anything for them. In fact, most side missions are just there to upgrade your vehicles and unlock hazmat suits that can withstand certain harsh environments. They do very little to push anything about the world itself, making them feel extremely repetitive.

And with a world filled with so many uniquely designed locations and characters, it is a huge missed opportunity.

I should also mention that there is no mini-map displayed during gameplay. This turned out to be a big annoyance because there was no way for me to tell if I was close to a side-quest while tracking another, not without actually opening the main menu screen where everything is. For a game that wants to engross you in its world, it makes sure you spend a lot of time in it’s menus. Even worse, shops aren’t even highlighted unless you are in close proximity. Because of that, I never even bother using them once.

Kung Fu Furry

Biomutant may feature giant mechanic machines, and a variety of range guns, but if there is one thing we learned during our playthrough it’s that the fist is the heart of it all. Biomutant presents itself as a kung-fu hack and slash filled with very stylish combos. One could almost say it follows in the steps of Devil May Cry when it comes to gameplay.

While the combos aren’t all that complicated, they are super fun to perform, especially since they’re different with each of the four weapon types. Adding to this, you can unlock cool abilities that come in the form of mutations. These are pretty unique, with some being with some being tied to your current aura.

Furthermore, you can even craft new weapons, although they always fall within the four different weapon types. Still, you can add perks such as freezing an enemy after a specific amount of hits and other cool things.

It’s all pretty fun, especially when you come up against the larger foes such as a world eater. I also love how there are comic book style quips that pop as well.

Yet while the character does feel great to control, I will say that there were some issues I had. For one, a lot of the time it felt like I was punching nothing but air. The game has a soft lock-in feature where you look at an enemy and it locks on, yet as you move around this seems to go all over the place. Often times I found myself performing combos but missing the mark completely because the lock-on decided to no longer lock-on.

I also often found myself thinking I was done with a battle because there was no audio cue and the enemy wasn’t in my view or they were just being dumb and standing still, leading me to think they were an ally NPC.

Then there’s the puzzles, which felt like a huge waste of time. They aren’t complicated at all, which isn’t the issue, but the fact that they are just line this up with that makes them extremely boring. They come in different variety, but they are all the same process. They don’t even fit the core gameplay, it’s like they were built for a different kind of game and then just slapped in there. It would have been great to see some actual level interaction like moving objects around, platforming sections, anything but what’s there now honestly.

Too Much DNA

Biomutant is by no means a terrible game, far from it, it just feels like it never hits its full potential. It’s clear that Experiment 101 took inspiration from many games and tried to put it all in one nice package, but in the case of Biomutant there is just too much of too little. The morality system feels out of place, as do the dialogue and player’s choices, and the side quests are just there for the sake of being there. There is a good foundation, but not a lot to be held by it. Combat and its world may be the saving grace of Biomutant, but this is one mutant that might need more experimentation before it achieves its full potential.

Score: 6.5/10

Pros

  • Stunning world.
  • Fun combat once you really dig into it.

Cons

  • No mini-map
  • Story feels very flat with no real payoff.
  • Morality system is weak in world influence.
  • Dialogue tree doesn’t offer you to loop back to previous options, missing out on huge parts of lore.
  • The one voice narrative becomes tiring.
  • Big world, yet somehow feels like there’s nothing to do.
  • Puzzles are boring, and don’t feel like they actually fit with the game.

Rumor: Square Enix Teaming Up With Team Ninja for Action Oriented Final Fantasy Spin-Off

Take this news with a big grain of salt for now, but a rumor has surfaced that Square Enix is teaming up with Team Ninja for an action oriented Final Fantasy spin-off — and that is definitely something fans of both companies and the Final Fantasy universe would like to happen!

According to a report by fanbyte, the game is rumored to be titled as Final Fantasy Origin — and the game is said to be set on the world of the first Final Fantasy game. The report also states that the game will be one of the big showcases Square Enix will have during their E3 presentation, so that will definitely get fans hot with buzz over this possible game reveal.

The game, which appears to be exclusive to PlayStation 5 with a PC release further down the road, will be one of Square Enix’s tentpoles at their upcoming E3 show. For whatever reason, several large chunks of the undated June show have leaked out, including the Final Fantasy Origin’s logo and demo plans. Square Enix hopes to release an alpha demo this summer, not unlike Nioh’s public alphas, to solicit feedback from the audience while the game is still in a fairly early state. This demo, like several other major demos, has its own title of “Stranger in Paradise.”

Expect the title to play similar to Nioh or other games in the genre, but to be more accessible for a wider audience. Fanbyte’s sources indicated that the game is largely developed by the same team behind Dissidia NT, but that Team Ninja’s nearly-200 person studio involves a lot of shifting around and that there aren’t hard borders on the different teams these days. The Nioh DNA in the game is likely the result of people core to the first two games’ development being involved in Final Fantasy Origin.

While still a rumor at this point, be sure to stay tuned for more news about Final Fantasy Origin. In the meantime, check out our other Final Fantasy related news here.

Resident Evil Fans Create a Free Resident Evil Code: Veronica Remake

As Resident Evil players enjoy the latest installment in the franchise with the recently released RE Village, a group of fans have started work to create a free Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake — one that looks very impressive and may actually get the attention of Capcom themselves!

Documented on the site RECVfanremake site, the project will not be accepting donations or money — and will be a free game that will be released to fans who have been wanting to see the adventure starring Claire Redfield and her brother Chris as they reunite and take on new biological threats unleashed by the Umbrella Corporation.

Here’s a gameplay video showing off how the project looks and is coming along.

Here’s the overview of the project from the developers themselves.

It is a Remake made by fans that recreates the entire game, following the style of Re2 and Re3 Remake and at the same time respecting the original game a lot.

Gameplay totally reimagined and adapted, so you can relive the events of Rockfort Island in a whole new way

Of course totally free, ALL rights belong to Capcom and this Project has no commercial purpose or anything like that.

We do NOT accept money or donations from anyone, this is a project that we do for the love of the franchise and for sheer fun

In other Resident Evil news, RE Infinite Darkness has a new trailer out promoting the show’s release this coming July on Netflix!

Apex Legends Update 1.69 May 24 Flies Out for Gameplay Changes

Respawn has released the Apex Legends update 1.69 May 24 patch today, and this brings a few gameplay changes to the table! Read on for the full patch notes below. Note there is a client patch out today, and a playlist update incoming later.

Apex Legends Update 1.69 May 24 Patch Notes:

This is what’s new per Respawn:

  • Restored slow effect when players run into Wattson’s fences
  • Valkyrie Changes:
  1. Added a short input delay after using Valyrie’s ult to prevent players from accidentally activating — then immediately cancelling — their ult by accident.
  2. Fixed an exploit that let players record stats in the firing range while using Valkyrie.
  3. Fixed an edge case the that allowed her ult to be activated shortly after using a jump pad.
  • Arena Changes:
  1. Penalties for abandoning games have been added to Arenas. This is similar to the abandon penalty applied in Ranked BR games. You only get the penalty if you were in a full squad when you left (this doesn’t apply if you were partied with the leaver — you’ll still get penalized in this case). This update will activate a warning for players who are about to leave a game in-progress. The associated penalties will show shortly after.
  2. Fixed an exploit that allowed users to unlock upgrades without having enough materials to do so.
  3. Hop-up Upgrades for the Bocek bow are now as follows: Level 2: Shattercaps, Level 3: Deadeye’s Tempo.
  4. Fixed various Arenas bugs and errors.

  • Miscellaneous stabiity fixes

Here are the plalyst changes incoming later via a server-side update:

Ubisoft Looks Back One Year After Sexual Allegations Report

It’s been one year since the #MeToo movement made its way to Ubisoft, as sexual allegations and misconducts were reported amongst current and previous staff members. These allegations made their way to the top officers of the video game company, with resignations and changes to make the workplace safer as a move to answer the reports.

In a post on Ubisoft, CEO Yves Guillemot writes that throughout the year they have made various efforts to build a roadmap to create an inclusive workspace as new reports are being addressed as well by the company.

Following the allegations of misconduct, we set up several channels via which team members can report inappropriate behavior, including a platform that guarantees anonymity. All reports are received and treated by an independent external partner to guarantee impartiality.

The focus to address the situation brought about 14,000 Ubisoft employees to conduct a group-wide assessment, and creation of a new HR process with an updated internal Code of Fair Conduct.

In the same post, new executive officers were introduced, such as VP of Global Diversity & Inclusion Raashi Sikka.

Management — myself included — have a responsibility to act as role models and be exemplary for our teams. I want to stress my personal commitment to continue to improve our workplace culture and create real, lasting and positive change at Ubisoft.

Guillemot continues to promise for the Ubisoft team “to work hard with the ambition of becoming an exemplary work in the tech industry”

Rainbow Six Siege Thunderbird Gameplay, Favela Rework Shown Off in New Vids

Revealed earlier today, Rainbow Six Siege’s next update, North Star, features a new operator named Thunderbird that MP1st was fortunate enough to be previewed by MP1st during an exclusive press preview event, Ubisoft gave us time to play as the new operator, which is featured in the Rainbow Six Siege Thunderbird gameplay below, and another video featuring the reimagined map, Favela!

The changes in the design of the Favela Map highlights better navigation for the players while still keeping the thematic setting, vibrancy, and liveliness of Brazil. The sample shows the map while using Thunderbird to traverse through the area during a match.

In a separate gameplay video, the Thunderbird showcase features the use of her Kóna Healing Station. The small, compact device heals any player, ally or enemy, within its proximity, even if they are downed. According to a previous announcement, “Thunderbird is a low armor, high-speed operator, equipped with a SPEAR .308 or SPAS-15 as a primary weapon, and BEARING 9 or Q-929 as a secondary weapon.”

Test servers for the North Star update will be dropping on May 25.

Destiny 2 Vault of Glass Raid Boss Exploit Doers “Disqualified,” Recent XP Challenge Changes Explained (Update)

For those not keeping tabs on Destiny 2 news, Bungie has launched the first-ever Destiny raid, Vault of Glass, in Destiny 2 recently! Unfortunately though, given how much the character and players have evolved from the first game, players have discovered a Destiny 2 Vault of Glass raid boss exploit that lets you push enemies off!

This has not escaped Bungie’s eyes, however, as the studio has announced that whomever does this will be “disqualified.”

Update: Disqualified from being the first-ever raid finishers, though players are A-OK doing the exploit it seems.

In addition to that announcement, Bungie has also clarified some of the XP Challenge changes the studio has made recently.

Here’s the explanation via the latest post from the studio:

The change we did call out in the 3.2.0 patch notes was the addition of a new XP payout size for Seasonal Challenges, called “Extra Large XP.” This payout is comparable to the amount of XP that players need to earn to complete half of a Season Pass rank.
With the addition of these Extra Large XP payouts, we also changed the overall naming convention. The reason we moved to this new naming convention was to better highlight that the XP payouts from challenges were larger than from other bounties and activities that show XP as a reward. We did not clearly explain this change, nor was the new naming convention easy to understand. These name changes led to confusion as players began tackling their Week-1 challenges. We understand and agree that the Season 14 name changes are confusing, and the team is looking to update the names for clarity in a future patch. For the time being, here is a quick look at how Seasonal Challenge XP payouts have been updated.
Season 13 Season 14 Payout Size*
Extra Large XP 0.5 Ranks
XP x2 Extra Large XP 1.0 Ranks
Double XP x4 Extra Large XP 2.0 Ranks
4x XP x8 Extra Large XP 4.0 Ranks
*May fluctuate depending on active XP bonuses

Bungie confirms that players who complete all Seasonal Challenges will still exceed level 100 in the Season Pass, and has apologized to the confusion.

Rainbow Six Siege North Star Announced, New Operator “Thunderbird” Incoming

Those looking for the next phase in Rainbow Six Siege’s content plans, Ubisoft has announced the Year 6 Season 2 (Y6S2) title update called “North Star,” and the new operator coming with the patch!

There’s a trailer and info straight from the press release.

In North Star, players will discover a brand-new Defender: Thunderbird. She can deploy a Kóna Healing Station, which heals any player – ally or enemy – close to this device, even if they are downed. The Kóna Station has a cooldown between each charge. Thunderbird is a low armor, high-speed operator, equipped with a SPEAR .308 or SPAS-15 as primary weapon, and BEARING 9 or Q-929 as a secondary weapon.

Same as in every major title update, expect a reimagined map (Favela) when it drops. According to Ubisoft, the changes in Favela will give it “better navigation,” and “improve readability” by making sure players know where they are and they’re going.

North Star will be available on Test Servers on May 25, where two new features such as the revamped armor syste and activities after death will be available.

On Test Servers, two new features will be tested: a revamped armor system and activities after death. Players’ armor will be converted to additional health so they have better visibility on their armor’s impact. Additionally, players will have new activities after death, with Attackers being able to control their own drones while some Defenders will be able to use their gadgets after their death (including Maestro, Echo or Mozzie). These changes will have a strong impact on gameplay and need to be tested to get players’ feedback. They will be available on the Test Server only and will not release on live servers at North Star launch.

Additional updates coming with North Star include:

  • Scoreboard 2.0
  • New corpse icons
  • Bullet holes fix
  • Operator balancing (Melusi, Mira, and Maestro tweaks and Gas Propagation rework)

Hitman 3 Needs an Esports Scene

There are a huge number of Esports games out there. Some have been purpose-built for a competitive multiplayer scene, such as Overwatch, Valorant, and League of Legends. Others have fallen into the Esports realm after players have gotten too competitive amongst their own competitions. Rainbow Six Siege is almost an example of this, but a better one is CS:GO. Valve had no idea what they were getting into when they made the most popular Esports shooter in the world. But there’s a lack of variety in Esports. Some games like Farming Simulator have broken the mold, but there needs to be more. For that, we believe that Hitman 3 is the game.

If you’re unfamiliar with Hitman 3, it’s a game in which players control the protagonist, Agent 47, through a series of missions, killing targets in several different ways. The Hitman community has grown exponentially thanks to the Hitman reboot trilogy, developed by Io Interactive, which is bookended by Hitman 3. Each mission can be approached in a myriad of ways, and new ones are being added all the time, both by the developer and the community.

There’s already a soft Esports scene around the game. Players compete in the same mission to get the highest scoring completion, which is almost always a Silent Assassin run. However, there’s also a competitive angle to how fast you can complete each mission. In this category, it doesn’t matter what score you get. It’s all about speed. Generally, the speedrun category tasks players with running through a series of missions in a particular order. The winner is the player to complete the final mission first. This is the more common way players currently compete in the game, but both are equally acceptable in forming a professional league.

The great thing about Hitman 3 is that every player can create new strategies. The speedrun or high score run that works well for one player may not be right for another. It all depends on skill and which levels a player is most comfortable with. For example, some players love the second mission in Hitman 3, Dartmoor. It has the best set pieces in the game, and the location is packed with opportunities to kill. Some players dislike the location, though, claiming that it’s too boring. Instead, these players opt for Chongqing or Mendoza, two areas that are packed with equal opportunities to kill, but they’re set in a much more interesting locale.

The variety in missions is only expanded when you bring those from the first two Hitman games into the mix. This is possible because Hitman 3 can accommodate these missions and upgrades them with some added features exclusive to the third game. As a result, you have three games worth of missions to exploit for an Esports scene, and that’s just across the point-scoring and speedrunning categories.

The only challenge you might come up against is getting players into the Hitman 3 Esports scene. Most Hitman 3 fans will jump at the chance to play the game competitively, but others will need convincing before they move over from another, more lucrative game. For that, all you have to do is track the potential earnings through a site like Olybet, where you can see what the odds of you winning are. If people are willing to bet on you, you can definitely make money playing the game. As soon as players see what they could be earning, they’d be mad to pass up an opportunity to become a Hitman 3 Esports pro.

Report: New Battlefield 2021 Screenshots Leak, Features Bits of Reveal Trailer Intro

While we’ve already had screenshots of this year’s Battlefield 2021 allegedly surface, more new Battlefield 2021 screenshots have been posted today, and it seems based on the same footage from the previous one (which was said to be the reveal trailer).

The images aren’t really new, as it features most of the same backdrop as the previous ones, though this time we see bits of what looks like the intro as the EA, and DICE logos flash across the screen. Check out the screens below, as well as a gif of it in one go.

https://imgur.com/a/Vrww9xg

https://imgur.com/a/JSl0teE

According to reliable leaker Tom Henderson, around “80%” of the trailer has leaked so far, which if true, is a lot. That said, t is a bit weird that EA has not commented on this, or has not ordered these posts to be taken down.

We’re just a few months away from June, which is when we’ll officially see the Battlefield 2021 trailer be released. Will we see the same stuff from leaks in the trailer, or something new completely? And will the actual trailer itself be leaked before EA manages to release it officially? I wouldn’t be surprised if it does.

Thanks, Reddit!

Metro Exodus PC DualSense Support Features Working Haptic Feedback & Adaptive Triggers, Watch It in Action

Developer 4A Games has recently released a hotfix for the PC version of Metro Exodus, and this is to add PS5 controller support for the game along with a few fixes! Curious how the Metro Exodus PC DualSense support has turned out so far? Check it out in action below.

In a Reddit thread discussing the DualSense support to the game, Reddit user MustafaKorkmaz confirmed that the support is “plug & play,” and no extra fiddling is needed!

Plugged in with the cable it came with and just ran the game 🙂 Haven’t used any software. I guess the game natively support the device.

In addition to that, the same redditor also posted a video featuring how proper haptics are supported and it’s not your typical rumble feature:

You can check the full list of fixes rolled out by 4A Games below (via Steam):

A new hotfix has been deployed for Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition, check out the hotfix notes:
Steam Version Number: 2.0.0.1

• Fixed issue with DLC Entitlements unlocking incorrectly
• Fixed issue where Vsync would lock to 60fps even when higher refresh rate is possible
• Fixed crash in Two Colonels specific to RTX2060
• Added PlayStation 5 DualSense Controller support

If you’re planning on playing Metro Exodus on current-gen consoles, don’t forget that it’s been upgraded by 4A, which you can read about here.
