Madden 21 Review – No End Zone In Sight

With August coming to a close, football fans rejoice! The 2020/2021 NFL season will be kicking off soon (although with no fans in the stadiums, thanks corona) and with that comes another yearly installment of Madden. From what I know about game development, I feel for studios that have to make sports games, I know it’s not easy coming up with new features and updates for a game that needs to be done within nine months of your previous game coming out. Unfortunately I doubt we will ever see EA ever give the developers more time by skipping a year because it just makes too much money for them. When you are the only game out there that has the NFL license and fans love football, people will continue to spend money on it. Ok, I’m getting off topic, how is this years gridiron game? Read on for our Madden 21 review!

The Old Pigskin is Looking Like a Pig

I’ll get straight to the point, Madden looks terrible for a 2020 game when you come even close to the field. Playing from the normal farther behind the QB perspective the game looks decent. Stadiums look filled with fans cheering their minds off, player animations look fluid, and the games audio really gives the game that Sunday football feel, with players yelling audibles, and cheering whenever a big play is made. Thats until the game gives you any on-field camera looks, and you wonder how this and Battlefield 5 are made on the same engine. Player models have almost no details, with straw looking hair and facial animations that look like it was made in Microsoft Paint. This is made even worse in Madden’s story mode “Face of the Franchise.” Cutscenes are almost unwatchable, with phoned in voice acting, and some of the worse dialogue written in a sports game. Ever since Madden switched to EA’s in-house engine Frostbite, fans were expecting a decent leap in graphics for the game but four years later they are still waiting. The other large issue is how terrible the game runs. Menus can take upwards of 10 seconds just going from one to another (I was playing on a Xbox One X) , and that matters especially if you are playing any game mode with many different menus like Ultimate Team or franchise mode. EA says a day one patch will fix many of these issues and I will update my review if it makes it any better.

The presentation for the game is still one of my more frustrating things with Madden because it has not changed in years. The production on game day basically starts with the players coming onto the field, a quick montage of them doing things in slow-motion, then right into the game. Even halftime is just highlights of some plays that happened in the first half, and it makes me wonder why EA won’t take any notes from 2K’s NBA series? Replays with actual commentary about what just happened, a halftime report inside of a TV studio, even something small like actually celebrating touchdowns with teammates, instead of awkwardly selecting a dance and having your player perform it while everyone on the field is walking away. An in-game broadcast production with pregame, highlights and hell even a halftime show for the Super Bowl would go along way to making players feel immersed into the actual game. Madden just seems to think that no one cares about that stuff, but in 2020 a game that is running a full 60 dollars needs some new presentation.

Touch or Tackle?

Their are a few new selections of the game-mode suit to Madden this year. As mentioned above, the Face of the Franchise mode has you making a character and taking them from backup high school player to NFL super star. Playing in college is pretty cool, same with competing in the NFL combine but these are one-off experiences. The game makes you think that your choice in selecting dialogue matters, but it basically does nothing to the overall completion of the story. You have Ultimate team, which is EA’s cash-cow in Madden, where opening card packs and building a fantasy team from scratch by completing challenges and getting better players is the goal. It is still borderline pay to win, and the fact you start fresh every year with a new team means any money people spend on cards has a limited time use before the next entry comes out. Even my time in the trial, it’s very obvious when bringing your team online which users have already spent money on card packs. With so much of Madden controlled by CPU, stats come to affect the game massively, especially in ultimate team when a seasoned vet can get beat by a less skilled player all because they have spent money on a better team.

Franchise mode is back, and yet again continues to be shafted by EA with basically the exact same features year after year (even down to the exact same menu layout). I love getting some friends together, selecting teams and having a fantasy draft for our franchise league, but the issue is that franchise mode just doesn’t bring in any money so it seems it will continue to get the short end of the stick.  Superstar KO also makes it’s return from Madden 20, and its most enjoyable with friends. Up to three people on select what they want in their core team and each selection has strengths and weaknesses. Want a strong pocket passer? Your run game will take a hit. Want a strong corner team on defence? Your defensive line will be weaker. It’s a fun arcade mode that is all about playing to your strengths and minimizing weaknesses that you and your squad will have to combat while taking on others online.

New Draft Picks

That’s not to say Madden 21 is completely devoid of anything new. The most welcome gameplay feature is the ability for offensive and defensive linemen to select how they want to attempt to rush or block the opposing team. It’s essentially the skill stick, but this gives a whole new dynamic to playing these positions besides just pushing forward on the stick and hoping your player wins the battle. You can select a bull rush, club arm and a few more types of rushes, and hopefully this new feature makes playing these positions a little more enticing. The new mode Madden introduces to us this year is called The Yard, a 6v6 only mode that clearly was meant to invoke how many people might of played football at recess back in elementary school. You make your own player and as you play the Yard, you gain XP that can be used to level up skills and buy new equipment. It’s a fun mode that can be played without having to think to deeply into it, but other then getting new gear and unlocking new stadiums, their really isn’t much to it. The crazy ruleset The Yard invokes the long gone Blitz series. Rules like the field is only 80 yards, there is no time limit to the game, just three possessions per team, and you get bonus points for things like interceptions and throwing a TD after already passing the ball once. I could be speculating here but after it was announced that 2K would get an NFL license for an “arcade style” football game, I think EA made this mode as a direct response to that. Either way it’s a mode you definitely want to get a few friends together to play, it was easily my most enjoyed mode

Verdict

Madden 21 has some new things to throw into the mix, but there isn’t enough here to even come close to justifying a full $60 price tag when you can pick up last years game and basically have the same experience. It’s sad that EA continues to shaft football fans with a game that looks very dated, adds minimal new features every year, and continues to emphasize that ultimate team should be the mode your playing. But if people continue to dump money into card packs, then EA will continue to put out a product that makes them good money each year, and you can’t fault them for that.

SCORE: 5/10

Pros

  • The Yard is a fun new addition
  • Sound design is top notch
  • New linemen stick gives more choice to rushing or blocking

Cons

  • Graphics are extremely dated
  • Little to no improvement in franchise mode
  • MUT still main game mode EA pushes
  • Presentation needs massive improvement .

Marvel’s Avengers Game Weekly and Daily Challenges Guide – Fastest Way to Farm XP & Rewards

Looking for the fastest way to finish most of your weekly and daily challenges in Marvel’s Avengers?? Well, we here at MP1st are here to help! In this Marvel’s Avengers game Weekly and Daily Challenges guide, we show you one of the fastest way to get through most of them.

Note that any challenges that require any kind of challenges that require you to pick up chests, rescue NPCs, collect resources, or finish mission types cannot be completed using this method. You will need to select missions that are catered to those. I know this seems like a huge bulk of them, but we noticed since the last few days that the game has been live, a majority of our challenges have been centered around using abilities, killing X amount of enemies, and performing x amount of combos. We have managed to sweep up most of our weeklies in just a few short hours, with dailies being finished in the process.

Marvel’s Avengers Game Weekly and Daily Challenges Guide:

So first thing first, if you are playing single-player you’ll want to unlock the HARM simulation room. This is unlocked through natural progression, or if you jump online it should be unlocked from the get go. Although the latter is not recommended if you haven’t completed the single-player campaign as it will warn you of the spoilers, since multiplayer takes place post-game. Once it’s unlocked you should see a mission called HARM Challenge 1. If not you might need to progress further into the game, possibly needing every character unlocked. It is recommended that you do unlock both outposts in the game before proceeding. There are different tiers available, but we found Challenge 1 to be the easiest to get things done.

This mission isn’t at all too difficult, though you can easily exploit it if you aren’t looking to run through the whole thing. Before we enter the mission be sure to grab whatever daily faction challenges you can. there’s only two factions and they are located at each outpost so be sure to talk to the NPC and collect all of them, even if they aren’t going to be completed in this mission it will save you the trip of going back and getting them. If you pay attention, you will notice that both factions will have daily challenges that are exactly the same.

You’ll also want to keep an eye on the daily and weekly hero challenges. There are 24 total, four for each hero, so be sure to change it up after you completed each hero challenge. If there is one that that you cannot get from simply killing standard enemies, you can hit triangle to refresh the challenge once. You may still get one that requires opening chests and other activities, in which case, again you will need to complete those on other missions.

Once you have all the daily challenges you are ready to take on the HARM 1 mission to farm challenges. Upon starting, you will be asked the enter the rally point and once you do enemies will spawn in and quickly rush the center. Here you’ll be able to take out a good chunk of them all at once, and because of the mission automatically starting you with full heroic abilities and ultimate, you can instantly activate those to complete challenges.

Once you clear the first wave you can push the start button to bring up the system menu and reload the checkpoint, This will restart the mission, giving you the ability to farm kills and other challenges extremely fast.

There you have it, the fastest way to farm most of Marvel’s Avengers Game weekly and daily challenges. Once again, it won’t finish all them as there are some challenges that require different requirements outside of just killing things, but it will clear a huge portion of the ones available. Hope this guide has helped and be sure to watch for other guides on the site in the coming days. You can do so by visiting our official Marvel’s Avengers Game Guide Page

Tony Hawk Pro Skater Remastered Requires Online Download According to New Box Art

There’s a new Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2 Remastered box art that seemingly confirms that players will need an online download in order to play the title.

Found on the AU version of EB Games, the box art for Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2 remaster confirms that, in the least, physical buyers will be required to have online in order to play the title due to a required download. You can see the box art down below.

And for those thinking that this could possibly just be a mistake on the retailer part, a user over on Reddit who happened to get the title early in his region posted an image of the case, which is also sporting the online requirement.

Got it
byu/dnm1983 inTHPS

We aren’t sure if this will be an always online title or if it is going the route of the Spyro Trilogy Remaster where the online was required to download the full title. It’s an odd decision on Activision part if we do say so ourselves as the Spyro Trilogy was roughly 30GB, something that could have easily been put on the disc at launch. We can’t imagine the Tony Hawk remasters being larger than what current blu-ray discs support. This most likely is some sort of online activation.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 Remastered will be releasing on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 September 4. Stay tuned to our review hitting the site soon.

Marvel’s Avengers Cosmetics Prices Broken Down and They’re Pricey

While we already know that Marvel’s Avengers will feature cosmetic items that can be bought using the game’s Credits or with real-world money, it seems the actual prices of these said cosmetics are kind of ridiculous when converted to actual cash.

Over on Reddit, poster Forceman4077 converted the prices of the different in-game cosmetics, and caluclation was based on the prices of the currency of Credits in the store.

Legendary Outfit – $14

Legendary Emote – $10

Epic Takedown – $12

Epic Outfit – $9

Epic Emote – $5

Rare Outfit – $7

Rare Emote – $2.50

Uncommon Nameplate – $1

For reference, here’s how much Credit Packages packs are being sold on PSN currently:

While the nameplates (Uncommmon at that) price seems fine, Legendary Outfits costing $10 above each aren’t — at least for most people (including us). To date, the current thread has over 1K upvotes with most people chiming in that yes, it is a ridiculous price. Sure, these things are entirely optional, but if I was Square Enix or Crystal Dynamics, I’d price then a lot lower so a lot more people can purchase these. And there’s also that whole “impulse buy” thing that I think wiill go out the window for most gamers once they see those prices.

Marvel’s Avengers will be released this September 4 on the PS4, Xbox One and PC. Stay tuned to our review hitting the site soon.

Make sure to check out the post-launch content revealed yesteday which include raids, and even the first (free) expansion featuring Kate Bishop!

MLB The Show 20 Update 1.17 Brings a Specific Fix

Developer SIE San Diego (or formlerly known as Sony San Diego Studios) has released the MLB The Show 20 update 1.17, and it brings a specific fix to the baseball sim.

MLB The Show 20 Update 1.17 patch notes:

Audio

  • Addition of more than 300 player names to the play-by-play commentary, including new players introduced through the roster updates and several names re-recorded for accuracy.

Marvel’s Avengers Black Panther-Related Announcement Pulled Due to Boseman’s Passing

In case you didn’t know, earlier in the week, Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman succumbed to colon cancer at the young age of 43. While Boseman found success in different roles, he was most famously known as the Wakandan King. In today’s Marvel’s Avengers War Table devstream, Crystal Dynamics flashed a message announcing that they are pulling their planned Marvel’s Avengers Black Panther announcement out of respect to Boseman’s passing.

Some of you might not have seen it given it was shown before the broadcast’s voice over started. Here’s the short but sweet tribute to Boseman:

After that, the studio flashed a message stating that they alterered what they were showing today in respect to Boseman. They even included an image of the Black Panther mask on the background.

The text reads:

Marvel’s Avengers fans, out of respect for a fallen true hero, we have alteredwhat we were showing today.

We know you understand and are with us in commemorating him.

While the message doesn’t outright say that Black Panther would be joining the Marvel’s Avengers roster, it sure seems like it. Either that or perhaps the first big expansion would involve Wakanda somehow? Your guess is as good as mine. What we got instead was an announcement regarding Kate Bishop, and some of the endgame weekly content like the AIM Secret Labs that players will dig into once they’ve reached the apex of their hero’s journey.

Whatever Black Panther-related announcement that was originally planned, I gather it’s appreciated by fans that Crystal Dynamics held back.

While you’re waiting for our Marvel’s Avengers review, make sure to read our new feature on the top tips you need to know before starting the game.

Destiny 2 Stasis Shadebinder Class Gameplay and Overview

In case you didn’t know, a new Stasis subclasses is being introduced by Bungie in Destiny 2’s upcoming expansion, Beyond Light. While we’ve seen gameplay of the expanison. the studio has now given us a look at the upcoming Destiny 2 Stasis Shadebinder class for Warlocks!

Head on below and check out the gameplay trailer and class overview.

Imbued by Stasis energy, the Shadebinder can summon a Stasis staff that fires projectiles that can freeze opponents, immediately rendering them immobile. The Shadebinder’s Penumbral Blast melee attack is a quick burst of Stasis energy erupting from the staff and instantly freezing anyone they hit. From there, the Warlock can either deal with the frozen foes, or leave them be and move on to other more immediate threats.

In addition to the trailer, the Destiny 2 Shadebinder class skill tree have been revealed as well, and the different level of customization Beyond Light offers.

No class embodies the concept of “freezing” better than the Warlock Shadebinder. Imbued by Stasis energy, the Shadebinder can summon a Stasis staff that fires projectiles which can freeze opponents, immediately rendering them immobile. The Shadebinder’s Penumbral Blast melee attack is a quick burst of Stasis energy that erupts from the staff and instantly freezes anyone it hits. From there, the Warlock can either deal with the frozen foes, or leave them be and move on to other more immediate threats.

If you’re looking to combine freezing with destruction, look no further than the Shadebinder’s Super: Winter’s Wrath. Here, the Shadebinder summons their Stasis staff and fires projectiles that instantly freeze opponents. The second stage begins (and the fight ends) when the Guardian raises the staff, detonates its Stasis crystal and sends a devastating Shatter Shockwave that disintegrates nearby frozen opponents.

According to Bungie, each Stasis subclass in Beyond Light will give players the ability ti customize abilities like grenades, movement modes, class abilities and more. There’s also a new layer of customization with the addition of Aspects and Fragments.

Aspects manifest as physical items in the world (such as a crystallized Vex conflux or a robotic Fallen arm, for example). When slotted in, Aspects will offer players new abilities, among other effects. These abilities can be mixed and matched freely by the player. Many Aspects will have space for Fragments to be slotted in. Fragments are also physical items you can discover in the world that, when applied to Aspects, offer additional passive perks such as stat bonuses that may come with penalties. Aspect upgrades are unique to each Stasis subclass, while Fragment slots are class agnostic; how players combine these two different types of upgrades will lead to a range of customization options.

For example, a Warlock finds a Frostpulse Aspect in the world and equips it. This Aspect augments their Rift ability, which now freezes any enemies caught in the field. The Frostpulse Aspect also has a Fragment slot available, allowing further customization. This Warlock decides to slot in the Whisper of Refraction Fragment that replenishes some of their class ability energy upon shattering enemies. They have now set themselves up with a nice 1-2 punch and, if played skillfully, can use this combo frequently.

Bungie will go over the next Stasis subclass this Thursday, and it’ll be the Titan’s turn!

In other Destiny 2 news, don’t forget to check out this week’s reset of activities! We also posted the Eververse inventory for the week too.

Top 6 Marvel’s Avengers Game Tips You Need to Know Before Diving In

For those who bought the Deluxe Edition of Marvel’s Avengers, you’ve probably started your quest to avenge the heroes on what happened on A-Day. For the rest of you who haven’t started yet, MP1st is here to bring you the top six Marvel’s Avengers game tips that you need to know before starting the game.

Some of these might seem like common stuff, but it bears mentioning all the same. Got that? Let’s dive in!

Marvel’s Avengers Game Tips

Marvel's Avengers PS4 HDD Size

Do not touch the Avengers Initiative mode unless you’ve finished the campaign

You see Hulk’s face there angry and all? Yeah, thatll be you if you start the Avengers Initiative mode before you finish the campaign! Why? Well, the opening of it spoils the story of the campaign, which the game even reminds you of before starting.

Only start this if you want the story spoiled (which is excellent, by the way), and if you really, really need to play multiplayer ASAP. That said, your friends most likely won’t want the story spoiled for them, either, so best to get the campaign over with first.

Change setting on PS4 to “Performance” mode for a smoother experience

It’s a matter of preference whether you want the game to look the sharpest or perform the best it can. Personally, I prefer performance. While there are still frame rate dips from time to time, it plays much smoother and better than having images look extra sharper in 4K resolution. Your choice, of course, but for those who want to play Avengers as efficiently as possible, this is the way to go.

Don’t spend resources on gear early on

In missions, you’ll obtain various resources that you can use to upgrade your equipnment. While looter shooter vets already know this, some people’s first foray into these kind of games might be Marvel’s Avengers, and the same rule applies here: don’t spend resources needlessly unless you need to. So if you’re starting on, you might be tempted to upgrade your armor…don’t. You’ll find a better one in the next mission or the next. In short: it’s not worth upgrading items unless you’re doing endgame stuff.

Invest in block breaking attacks first

The amount of skills that you can obtain per hero in Avengers is a lot! You might be tempted to get upgrades for your supers or get the coolest looking one ASAP. That’s a bad idea if so. Early on, given your gear isn’t high enough and you don’t do enough damage, you’ll want to get rid of enemies quickly, and this will prove to be a problem for those enemies with shields.

Make sure to allocate the first few skill points you have for block breaking heavy attacks and block breaking AoE (area of effect) attacks that not only will make your life disposing of enemies faster, you’ll also end up helping your teammate out too.

Be cautious of the “Equip Best Gear” feature

To make things simpler for gamers, Crystal Dynamics has implemented a one-button answer to have your character equip the best gear. The thing is, it doesn’t always work as it should. Usually, it will give you the best gear in terms of raw numerical power value, but it won’t factor in the buffs and extra effects a piece of gear can do. So if you have a power 10 gear that has extra 20% buff to perform stun attacks after every Heroic ability, that’s better than a power 11 gear, right?

In short, check your gear yourself. Hey, even AI gets it wrong from time to time.

Marvel's Avengers PC Requirements

Learn to parry, and if you can’t, dodge

In Marvel’s Avengers, heroes can either dodge or parry almost every kind of attack. However, there’s a major difference in each. If you manage to successfully parry an attack, it usually gives a stun counter to the enemy, and usually, this is an area of effect too! That said, it is a bit harder to parry than to dodge given your Intrinsic meter (the one below your health bar) depletes when constantly trying this and failing (or even pulling it off), so you will need to learn how to dodge.

You know you’ve successfully dodged when there’s a brief slow motion effect that accompanies your character’s dodge. This leaves enemies vulunerable to attacks, but not as much as if you parried their attack.W

Well, there you have it! Do you have any tips for starting players? If so, share them down in the comments below! Marvel’s Avengers will officially launch this September 4 on the PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Marvel’s Avengers AIM Secret Lab, Mega Hives and More Daily & Weekly Missions Announced

While the reveal of Kate Bishop was the biggest news that came out of today’s Marvel’s Avengers War Table stream, Crystal Dynamics also announced the Marvel’s Avengers AIM Secret Lab, which seems to be the game’s version of raids. That’s not all, as more cycling (weekly, daily) missions have been revealed as well.

Here’s the details straight from the press release:

AIM Secret Lab – Players looking to test their mettle will look forward to teaming up with three friends to tackle AIM’s Secret Lab, a mission only accessible after reaching the game’s highest power levels. Available once a week, the AIM Secret Lab raid will culminate in a massive boss fight influenced by how well players’ teams performed throughout the mission.

Villain Sectors – Special missions that provide epic showdowns with powerful bosses that players will want to return to as their Heroes get closer to the game’s power-level cap of 150, while SHIELD Vaults are treasure troves of resources, gear, and secrets that must be discovered and unlocked.

Mega Hives – Will put players’ full Super Hero roster to the test as they fight their way through a gauntlet of descending floors packed with enemies. The farther they go down, the higher the difficulty goes up, and once all their Heroes are defeated, players will have to start over from the very beginning.

These missions will come to the game free of charge. We’re checking in with Square Enix to see which days these will reset and how often. We’ll update the post if we get more info.

Marvel’s Avengers Kate Bishop Operation Take Aim Announced

In today’s Marvel’s Avengers War Table devstream, Crystal Dynamics announced the first piece of post-launch content players will tackle, and it’s called the Marvel’s Avengers Kate Bishop Operation Take Aim!

This will feature more story, a new big bad enemy, and more! Here’s the reveal trailer:

Kate Bishop joins our expanding roster in Marvel’s Avengers: Kate Bishop – Taking AIM, a post-launch Operation in the Avengers Initiative.

As a master archer, Kate has the smarts, the talent, and the witty attitude that makes any enemy she faces quiver in fear. #Reassemble

While Crystal Dynamics has already announced Hawkeye, it seems Kate Bishop will be a different character altogether and not a reskin (or vice versa). She will be releasing late October.

In other Marvel’s Avengers news, there’s a new patch that was released today, and here’s what’s in it.
