The big highlight here is no doubt Red Dead Redemption 2, but there’s more variety available for those who don’t want to be a virtual cowboy.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Game Settings Update Out, Notes Indicate Changes in Contraband Tier Progress
Remember that story we wrote earlier about Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 players needing more than six hours a day in order to reach tier 200 in the Black Market? Well, it seems Treyarch knows how shoddy it felt as the studio has rolled out a new Black Ops 4 game settings update that fixes that and some other bugs!
First off, the big news here is that the Halloween Event is now live on PS4! Here’s the complete set of Black Ops 4 game settings notes (via Treyarch):
Starting today, PS4 players get access to our free Halloween-themed Special Event stream in the Black Market with new seasonal gear to earn and use across all modes. This includes a special Halloween Calling now live in Zombies as part of the event, with exclusive rewards to earn through new challenges in Zombies! Check out the Zombies Barracks menu for details.
As a reminder, though start/end dates may vary by platform, limited-time Special Events like the Halloween Event will run for the same duration for all platforms, giving all players the same amount of time to earn the content. Let’s get spooky.
We’ve made the following updates to the game (Global):
- Blackout
- Death Stashes
- Fixed an issue where players were sometimes unable to loot items from a Death Stash.
- Death Stashes
- Multiplayer
- General
- Addressed an issue that prevented players from earning Contraband Tier progress.
- Addressed an issue that prevented players from earning the proper amount of Contraband Tier progress in round-based games.
- Addressed an issue with some MP matches ending in “Game Session No Longer Available”.
- General stability improvements in the Black Market.
- Create-a-Class
- Addressed an issue with Attachments applying to the GKS.
- Special Issue Equipment
- Resolved an exploit that led to unlimited Seeker shock mines.
- General
In other news, we just now found out that the Black Ops 4 servers are running at 20hz and not at 60hz which was the tick rate in the beta! And yes, there’s proof.
Report: Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Servers Tick Rate Currently at 20hz Compared to 60hz in the Beta
If you’ve played the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 beta and thought the hit registration was better compared to what you’ve experienced now, well, you’re not alone, and there’s a very good reason for that. It seems the Black Ops 4 servers were running at 60hz back then, but is now only at 20hz for some reason. If you need a simple reason why good tick rates are important, the higher tick rate means better connections so you won’t experience that annoying getting-shot-behind-a-corner thing.
This was unearthed by Reddit user Smcro who did a deep (and I mean deep!) dive into the Black Ops 4 servers. Before you read on, check out some of the terminology so you won’t get lost. Note that Smcro tested on the PS4, though it’s widely believed this is the same for all platforms. The info shared below is accurate as of October 19, 2018.
- Client: your system (PS4/Xbox/PC).
- Server: Treyarch’s system through which all clients (players) in a match connect.
- Send rate: rate at which update packets are sent between systems. This is also known as update rate and is commonly confused with tick rate which is something entirely different.
- Tick rate: the rate at which the game itself is simulated on a system.
- Client send rate: rate at which a client sends updates to the server.
- Server send rate: rate at which the server sends updates to a client.
However, my testing for the most-recent update (as of October 19th) shows that the server send rate has been cut down to 20hz. For a bit of context, instead of receiving information from the server every frame (given that the game runs at 60fps on console), you will be receiving information every third frame (50ms between each update at 20hz as opposed to ~16.7ms at 60hz).
Testing
I performed the testing with Wireshark where I measured the send rate in each direction between the server and my system based on the packets sent to and from the server. I connected to 7 different multiplayer servers (in four different locations) and each showed a client send rate of 60hz and server send rate of 20hz. My testing was performed on a PS4 Pro with a wired, fiber connection.
Here is an imgur album with a graph for each server where the send rates are plotted against time. The red data is the client send rate and the green data is the server send rate. The points in time where the send rates drop down are intermissions.
The servers that I connected to can be viewed on a map here. I connected to a dedicated server every match. I had quite a high ping to the New Jersey servers and a lower ping everywhere else. Something to point out is that the in-game ping graph showed a 50-60ms ping to the California and Illinois servers, but a ping from my computer to those same servers is 12-13ms. I’m not sure what causes such a mismatch there (if not the processing delay on the server).
According to Smrco, the server send rate has been lowered from 60hz to 20hz which causes more inconsistency compared to the beta client due to the fact that there is triple the amount of time between server updates. Additionally, Smcro states that the matchmaking would sometimes choose servers that are “undesirable” in terms of latency.
Over on Twitter, YouTuber Battle(non)sense, who’s famous for doing deep dive videos on a game’s netcode, confirms that Black Ops 4 servers are indeed at 20hz, and is partially to blame why hit registration feels off.
exactly that
— Battle(non)sense (@BattleNonSense) October 20, 2018
Have you noticed hit registration to be a bit spotty in the game or is it good enough? Do you think Treyarch will bring the Black Ops 4 servers back at 60hz?
In other Black Ops 4 news, we ran a story earlier today that explains why you need to play more than six hours a day, everyday, to attain the max tier in the Black Market.

Battlefield V Won’t Have Single-Player DLC After “The Last Tiger”
This past week, DICE blew the doors wide open in regards to Battlefield V’s single-player campaign called “War Stories.” While the game’s last chapter titled The Last Tiger will be made available this December 2018, don’t expect more War Stories chapters to be made available down the line as part of the Tides of War seasonal events.
This was revealed by Global Community Manager Dan Mitre where he answered if there will be more War Stories coming in Tides of War.
Dan Mitre: No, after The Last Tiger is released in December, there is currently no plan to add additional War Stories through Tides of War.
Given how the focus of each and every Battlefield game has been multiplayer, this isn’t really surprising news. Speaking of Tides of War, more info about that will be made next week according to DICE.
Don’t forget to check out the rewards DICE is giving to Battlefield V fans as a sort of thank you for sticking with the game amid its delay.

Players Must Average 6 Hours & 40 Minutes Playtime Daily to Reach Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Black Market Tier 200
Just yesterday, Activision announced that the Black Market is making its way to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Thankfully, this version of the Black Market doesn’t rely on Supply Drops like in Black Ops 3, which relied on RNG (random number generator) for items. In Black Ops 4, there’s a “Contraband stream” that slowly fills up until you reach a certain tier, which in turn, will unlock a specific item.
Currently, the Black Ops 4 Black Market tier 200 is the max level available. If you’re planning on attaining that goal, you best have a LOT of free time on your hands. Over on Reddit, user DuvelMe gave a very good playtime computation on just how long it’ll take someone to reach the Black Ops 4 Black Market tier 200 max level, and it’s a staggering six hours and 40 minutes of game time each day. And in case you think DuvelMe was exaggerating, here’s how he arrived at that number:
The amount of time it takes right now to go up a tier is way too much. I don’t know if it is time based or xp based but right now it seems like it would take you at least 10 games of TDM or KC to go up a tier. There’s only about 50 days to get to tier 200, which means that you’d have to go up about 4 tiers a day, that’s 40 games every single day. Let’s say every game lasts for about 10 minutes. that’d mean that i’d have to play 400 minutes or 6 hours and 40 minutes straight every single day just to reach tier 200. Please don’t tell me y’all are forcing people to buy their way to tier 200, that’d be garbage.
DuvelMe might have a point, as I’ve been playing since yesterday when the Black Market was made available, and I’m still only at Black Market tier 2.
If you’re playing Black Ops 4 multiplayer, how long does it take for you clear a certain tier and move up? Is this grind OK for you or is it a tad too much? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

New Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Game Settings Update Rolled Out, and It’s Chunky
While Treyarch just released a hefty Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 update yesterday, it seems there’s more changes coming to the game today, as a new Black Ops 4 game settings update (server-side) has been rolled out on the PS4 version, and contrary to the other Black Ops 4 game settings update roll out, this one is taking its time to be downloaded.
Given how early it is in the US, I suspect we won’t be hearing what the actual changes are for a few more hours, but it will most likely be bug fixes, as the latest Black Ops 4 update released yesterday has seemingly birthed a few glitches of its own. Users have reported (check the comments section here) that the GKS submachine gun can’t equip attachments after the update, and how corpses can’t be looted in Blackout.
Once we know the full details, we’ll be sure to let our readers know ASAP.
In the meantime, don’t forget to check out details regarding the introduction of the Black Market in Black Ops 4, as well as our feature on the cost of dropping the campaign in Black Ops 4.

Battlefield V Tides of War Info Coming Next Week
With Battlefield V joining the list of games-as-a-service (GaaS) business model, DICE needs something to keep players from dropping the game once a new one comes around; enter Tides of War.
What’s Tides of War? According to DICE, “Tides of War will be an evolving journey featuring a new narrative every few months. Each chapter of Tides of War will focus on a particular aspect of the era, with unique gameplay experiences to drive players forward. We will use content, soldiers, visuals, and narrative to immerse our players deeper into the gameplay.” In short, it’ll be in-game events planned around the game, which will change every few months.
While we already know that, DICE has been rather coy on the specifics. Well, as it turns out, that’s about to change next week! Over on Twitter, Global Community Manager Dan Mitre confirmed that DICE will “dig into” Tides of War next week!
Yes, next week we’ll start to dig into Tides of War.
— Mitre in LA… for now (@dan_mitre) October 19, 2018
Given how DICE has focused on one particular aspect of Battlefield V each week, it might be time for Tides of War info to start raining down on fans everywhere.
What do you hope to see from the Tides of War reveal next week? Would a proper roadmap suffice?
Red Dead Redemption 2 Will Come in 2 Discs Confirmed, Here’s What They Look Like
Remember when we ran a story that Red Dead Redemption 2’s Japanese box cover marked it down as coming in two discs? As it turns out, that story was entirely legit! Over on Twitter, YouTuber KOFI outed that he has a review copy of Red Dead Redemption 2, and even took a picture of the two-disc physical discs!
He mentions that one disc is called the “Data Disc,” while the other is called the “Play Disc.” Three guesses on what each disc does.

Given how big the game is on both the PS4 and Xbox One, it’s not that surprising that Red Dead Redemption 2 wouldn’t fit in just one Blu-ray disc.
For more on the game, check out the launch trailer to whet your appetite for next week. If you plan on getting it digitally, don’t forget that you can pre-load it starting today!
Battlefield V Now in Gold Status on the Day of Its Original Release Date
In case you didn’t know, Battlefield V was originally set to be released on October 19 (yes, today), but was pushed back to November 20 for some added spit and polish by DICE. In some weird turn of events, the game has now turned into gold status — on the very same day it was originally set to launch!
For those unfamiliar, games entering “gold” means that all the heavy lifting is done, and most of the stuff being done now are for bug swatting, glitches and the like. The actual game code can now be pressed onto discs and be distributed.
This was revealed by Oskar Gabrielson, GM of DICE in a new video released today.
Battlefield V is officially in Gold stage + free helmet and emblem for everyone
by inBattlefieldV
Don’t forget that DICE is giving out free in-game items just for logging in early in Battlefield V! You read up on the details about that right here.
Battlefield V will shoot out to retail this November 20 on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Call of Duty Black Ops 4: The Cost of Dropping Campaign
It’s that time of year again. The calendar is nearing its end, and another Call of Duty game has arrived in time for the holiday shopping season. These games are so consistently released on an annual basis that they have become as much a part of the season as pumpkin spice lattes and brawling for deals on Black Friday. Call of Duty games are a routine—a tradition, even—for many gamers, including myself. But this year, part of that tradition has been disrupted. The recent news dump of information on the Battlefield V single-player story missions has only punctuated this change. For the first time ever, a Call of Duty game was released without a single-player story campaign.
Indeed, Call of Duty campaigns have been criticized for their short lengths and sometimes simplistic gameplay, but for some, this is what they enjoy. There’s something uniquely impressive about CoD single players that sets them apart. The Modern Warfare series and the first Black Ops game had campaigns that were downright phenomenal. Arguably, few other games are capable of anything close to the playable blockbuster movie that CoD campaigns have become. Its arch-rival, Battlefield, has derivatively attempted time and time again to replicate CoD’s success, with decent results at best. CoD is the reigning king of linear first-person shooters. And regardless of one’s personal preferences, there’s no denying its achievements, which is why, for many, it is so bizarre to see Activision release this game without its founding game mode.

What prompted this decision? Well, when viewing the topic from its publisher’s perspective, one might understand their decision based on statistical trends. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 reportedly had a completion rate of only nine percent. And the woes of creating single player games cut deeper than low completion rates. Single-player video games are costing more and more to make all the time. The graphical fidelity of game engines is advancing, and the production of high-quality assets for these engines takes more manpower than ever before.
A common estimate for development budgets in video games is $10,000, per staff member, per month. Thus, as Jason Schreier of Kotaku calculates, big budget games created by a crew of 400 people for 36 months run the cost of $144 million, and that is before including the marketing budget, which may in some cases double or triple the cost of a game. Not to mention, there’s also the “increasing professionalism of the industry,” which demands top Hollywood voice talent to meet increasing production value—a trend that Call of Duty itself helped pioneer with actors such as Kevin Spacey in 2014’s Call of Duty Advanced Warfare.
What’s more, video games also have a monetization problem. Games today are sold at an industry standard of $60, but according to a 2013 article from Colin Moriarty of IGN, games priced at $50 in 1990 would have been $89 in 2013 money ($97 as of the writing of this article). In other words, thanks to inflation, the power of the dollar has changed, but the price of AAA games has seen little movement. And all this together has culminated in an industry crisis.
At the moment, the best solution for this seems to be in microtransactions. Publishers can make up for the missing revenue by nickel-and-diming gamers to purchase small, yet inconsequential, in-game items. But this only works when gamers are playing the mode that features microtransactions, and it works best when players are incentivized to show off their 420 YOLO Blaze It AK-47 skins for their friends in multiplayer (yes, I’m exaggerating, but not by much).

If I were making these decisions at a publisher such as Activision, I could only look at these numbers and see dropping single-player from the production costs as a no-brainer decision. But for gamers, there’s more to this than production costs and gross revenue. What’s to be lost by making this decision? If this move becomes standard, there will be no new Captain MacTavishes and Alex Masons. There will be no more All Ghillied Ups or betrayals from General Shepherds. For me, these characters and moments define the franchise.
Assuredly, for some, albeit few, this makes the game passable. But it’s unlikely that this will hit the wallets of the executives at Activision. They’ll follow the money. Of course, this all might be an exception rather than a new rule. But for now, it seems, it’s the end of an era, and until publishers solve their monetization problems, we might have to just get over it. Let’s just hope the solution is not far away.

Report: DICE Employees Departing Due to Star Wars Battlefront II Development Issues, and New Studio Competitors
What happened during the development of Star Wars Battlefront II is no secret to anyone keeping tabs on video game news. With EA’s initial announcement that gameplay abilities and more will be part of the game’s loot box system not going over well with gamers everywhere, the publisher was forced to backtrack on it, and even reworked the game’s progression system completely.
It seems this snag in the Star Wars Battlefront II development process, coupled with the fact that more AAA studios are opening in Stockholm, Sweden, is causing more and more employees to depart the studio. In a report by Swedish site digital.de.se (via ResetEra), close to 40 employees have left the studio this year, and that number is even expected to increase. Among the causes cited for departure is the “failed” launch of Battlefront II. The report also indicates that while job networking site LinkedIn states that close to 40 employees have left, the publication’s sources reveal that the “real number” is higher, with a handful of employees quitting their posts at the studio, though they’re still with the company for the time being.
According to one source, “It was a debacle. For many [employees], it was very tough to have to quickly redo the game” — referring to Battlefront II’s revamped progression system.
These aren’t junior devs, either. It mentions that some of the developers who left have over 10 years of time spent at DICE.
Another reason for employees leaving the studio aside from the “development hell” of Battlefront II is that new gaming studios like Epic Games and Ubisoft have recently opened offices in Stockholm, with former DICE GM Patrick Bach seemingly poaching some of his former cohorts to work for Ubisoft, where he’s now part of a new studio.
Bear in mind that DICE, the studio who develops the Battlefield franchise, has well over 400 people in its stable, with that number skyrocketing to 700+ if you include the people working on the Frostbite Engine game engine team, Gothenburg-based Ghost Games, and other EA employees based in Sweden.
We’ve contacted EA regarding this rumor, but bear in mind, there’s a chance that some people just wanted to work at a new place, so it could very well be a whole lot of nothing.
Do you think the report has merit, and do you think it will affect development of Battlefield V in any way?

The Winning Formula
If you’re an avid gamer, chances are you’re quite a big fan of the feeling of winning. It’s one that everyone loves, but one that is particularly relevant to those of us who game, being one of the main reasons why we have such a passion for playing. It’s the reason we can stand to go through such an array of emotions in a game – staying up all night with exhaustion, almost dying multiple times and then finally completing that level you’ve been stuck on for weeks on end and experiencing complete elation.
The psychology behind winning is just as captivating as the actual feeling of winning. Did you know for example, that when you win at something, the dopamine feedback loop remembers how you achieved that victory, so that you can replicate the same behaviour in future. It’s this function that is to thank for knowing how to retrace your steps in a game or reach a certain level again.
Those of you familiar with Fable will know the quote “that’s how games work. Winners get prizes and losers bleed a lot and then get eaten by worms”. If you’re playing a game, then you want to win – that’s a fact. But have you ever wondered why we have certain feelings whilst trying to win a game? Luckily, Betway Casino have done the research for you, creating an insightful infographic which talks through the stages our brain goes through in the run up to a win.
Have a read through below, but we warn you, there is a high chance that after reading you’re going to want to hop in your gaming chair and hit play!

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Black Market Coming Today First on PS4, Special Events Announced
It seems the news that Supply Drops won’t be showing up in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 are indeed true! In a new post on Activision’s website, the publisher announced the Black Ops 4 Black Market, which Call of Duty fans will remember from Black Ops 3,
Starting today, Friday, October 19, coinciding with the big patch coming in later today, the Black Ops 4 Black Market will be available first on PS4 for seven days before it hits PC and Xbox One. According to Activision, it will be the “one-stop” shop for awesome gear and new ways to express yourself in the game.
The publisher also mentions a “Contraband stream” in the Black Ops 4 Black Market that will provide a progression path to earn the items you want simply by playing the game! No more random stuff, it seems. Contraband items will be delivered via seasonal Operations, with each Operation delivering a new batch of content “every couple of months.” Operation First Strike starts today on PS4, and will deliver the first wave of new content which include:
- All-New Blackout Characters– New playable characters will be released with each new Operation.
- Signature Weapons
- Specialists Outfits – Cool customization content built around themes for all Specialists in-game; you can even mix and match the look of your character within outfit sets.
- Tags / Gestures – Whether you’re taunting opponents or celebrating a victory, Tags and Gestures are a perfect way to express yourself in the game.
Within the Black Ops 4 Black Market, there will also be limited time Special Events which will bring even more unique content to the shooter. Starting October 20 on PS4 — and rolling out to other platforms seven days after — players will have access to a free Halloween-themed Special Event stream with even more gear to earn! This is the first of many Special Events that will be hosted in the future, though players should get in while they can since it’ll be around only for a limited time.
Finally, Blackjack’s Shop is coming this November, and will let players directly purchase certain pieces of gear. Activision states that the shop will refresh weekly with a variety of items.
Once the patch becomes available today, we’ll be sure to let you know ASAP. Don’t forget, double XP is coming today as well.
DICE Handing Out Battlefield V Rewards, Latest Dev Talks Episode Now Live
The latest Battlefield V Dev Talks episode (#4), is now live! You can watch the video episode below where UX Designer Nathalie Ek interviews Senior Audio Director Bence Pajor, and Lead Sound Designer Andreas Almstrom about the sound design of Battlefield V.
The DICE developers bring you behind the scenes of Battlefield V. In this episode, we talk about how we captured the ambient sounds that make Battlefield V so immersive, weapon sounds and we reveal how we recorded the iconic sound of the V-1 rocket.
Possibly even bigger news than the Dev Talks episode is that DICE is giving away Battlefield V rewards! In the press release, it mentions that to “reward fans for their patience,” DICE GM Oskar Gabrielson announced the “Oscar Mike” gift, which houses character visualization items for BFV!
With the OSCAR MIKE GIFT, (the name taken from military radio jargon used on the front lines, which translates to “On the Move”) any player who logs into the game within the first week of release will find the following bonus items in their shipments when they visit the Armory:
-
OSCAR MIKE HELMET – Headgear for the Allied faction that players will be able to equip on any of their Allied soldiers
-
OSCAR MIKE EMBLEM – A collectable emblem that players can equip and then show up on their Company Tanks, Planes and Weapons during gameplay
Same as before, MP1st will be your premiere source for any newsworthy info from the Dev Talks, and we’ll have it up on the site soon.
In case you didn’t see it, DICE released a bunch of single-player info and even gameplay yesterday.
Latest Battlefield V Dev Talks Episode to Focus on Audio, Watch DICE Shoot Actual Guns in This Teaser
Say what you want about the Battlefield franchise, but one thing that’s hard to deny is how fantastic the audio is in every entry. It seems like this will be the case with Battlefield V. In the fourth episode of “Battlefield V Dev Talks,” it’ll be focusing on the audio of the game.
Over on Reddit, Global Community Manager Dan Mitre posted a teaser of DICE capturing the sound of actual guns, and we even get a comparison shot of the Battlefield V version of the same weapon so we can compare!

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Patch Releasing Tomorrow, First Double XP Weekend Kicking Off
While Treyarch might not have rolled out a hotfix for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 today, there’s a very good reason for that, as the studio is releasing a substantial Black Ops 4 patch tomorrow, which we’ve been expecting since early this week.
Not only are we getting a Black Ops 4 patch, but Treyarch will also be flipping the switch for the game’s first double XP weekend! Check out the full announcement by the studio in the tweet below.
Tomorrow, we’re releasing a substantial update to #BlackOps4 with a host of improvements, fixes, and additions across all modes, including new stability fixes for Zombies. We’ll also kick off our first 2XP Weekend, along with 2XP Nebulium Plasma in Zombies! More details soon.

Hopefully, there’s a balance pass for the weapons included in tomorrow’s update. Of course, in a perfect world, things like “peeker’s advantage” will be taken out, but doubt that’s happening. Don’t forget to check out our top five list of Specialists that are easy to use for a few pointers.
