Burnout Developer Criterion Working on Game AAA Game With “Melee Combat”

With news that a Burnout Paradise Remastered is hitting consoles very soon, some racing fans might be hoping that Burnout developer Criterion Games might be using it to build hype levels for a new entry in its revered racing franchise.

Well, I’m here to burst your bubble, folks! It seems not only will Criterion’s next game not be related to Burnout, but it won’t even be a racing game at all. In a job posting on its official site, Criterion has mentioned that it’s looking for a “Lead Combat Designer” to lead the design of combat within the “AAA title’ they’re making.

Applicants should be passionate about:

  • Game Feel
  • All types of combat in games but in particularly melee combat
  • Action and Action Adventure games
  • Physics and physicality in games
  • Working with teams across disciplines and crafts: engineering, art, audio, QA to name a few
  • The way we create: not doing things just because that’s the way we’ve done them before, understanding change is a necessary part of success
  • The people you work with: asking appropriate questions and being open to new solutions is key to you and the team’s development
  • Generous collaboration: a desire and inherent need to work with others to achieve great things, develop new ideas and truly innovate

Job duties include building combat systems, “challenge the status quo of action games to deliver best in class game feel.”

In case you want to apply, here’s some of the key competency the company is looking for:

  • Prior experience with designing animation based systems in a shipped game
  • A strong understanding of combat systems in games
  • The ability to thrive in cross discipline teams delivering world-class quality
  • Enthusiasm for working in our highly collaborative and friendly environment
  • Experience of leading the feature design process from prototype to final
  • Experience of working on AAA console or PC titles

Unless Burnout suddenly has an action-adventure combat element into it, I gather, Criterion’s next game won’t be anything racing-related at all. Then again, there are car combat games, and we’ve seen crazier game ideas from other studios, right?

Report: Star Wars Battlefront II Sales at 7 Million Not 9M as Originally Announced

Just yesterday, during EA’s financials call, the publisher revealed that Star Wars Battlefront II sold around nine million units, which is under its projected 10 million target. While the game did under perform, a one million difference isn’t that bad especially when you consider how much backlash the game — and the publisher — got for its original vision for microtransactions.

Well, it seems either EA bungled up their numbers, or someone, somewhere screwed up. According to Wall Street Journal tech reporter Sarah E. Needleman, EA said that Battlefront II sold nine million units to her under embargo a few hours before the call, but during the actual call, the publisher mentioned seven million units were sold, and not nine million!

In case you couldn’t see the tweet, it reads:

Another possible correction: EA told me midday yesterday under embargo that it sold 9M unit of SWBII. When the results came out, I reported that. Then on the earnings call hours later, EA said it sold 7M units. The other error also happened because EA gave me incorrect numbers.

Seven million units is still a lot, but I gather, is way below EA’s targeted sales projections for the game.

We’ve reached out to EA and will update the post if we get a response.

Monster Hunter World Sales Top 1.35 Million in Japan in First Three Days

It’s no secret by now that Monster Hunter World has been a huge success for Capcom. While it’s expected to do well in Japan, it might just have shattered expectations as Famitsu has reported that the latest Monster Hunter World sales figures put it at 1,350,412 in Japan in just the first three days of availability!

This is a new record high in first week sales for a PlayStation 4 game, and is also just for physical sales. Famitsu estimates that total sales including digital will exceed two million so far.

Monster Hunter World didn’t just line up Capcom’s coffers, but Sony’s too. World pushed PS4 hardware sales (includes PS4 Pro) from 44,910 units the previous week, to 140,432 for the week leading up to the game’s release, January 22-28. It was the second highest sales week for the PS4 console in Japan, which was only beaten out during the console’s launch week between February 17-23 in 2014. To date, PS4 unit sales in Japan are pegged to be at 6,187,000.

If you haven’t bought the game yet, go check out our review to see why we gave it a glowing 9.5/10. Finally, you can also see what the most popular weapons are in the game so far right here in this poll.

This PUBG Simulator Will Help Make You a Sniper Master

Using a sniper in PUBG can be a daunting task. Since there’s no firing range to test out accuracy, or any tutorials to help players learn the ropes, the only way to get good with a sniper is to jump in at the deep end.

Thankfully, the folks over at PUBG8X.com have created a simple “PUBG Simulator” as a tutorial on how to use the Kar89k. It focuses on predicting bullet drop at certain distances.

I think it works well. You can watch me testing it out below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-72BVGztxs4

To try it for yourself, click here. (Use Google Translate on the page, if you need it in English.)

Reddit user gomico provided some instructions on how the simulator works:

Right click to toggle ADS, left click to fire. (Currently supports headshots and torso shots only)

Choose 4x scope(四倍镜) or 8x scope(八倍镜) on the right side of screen.

You can also choose a terrain: random(随机), flat ground(水平), short slope(低坡), high slope(高坡).

Click 更换场景 to enter the next scene after every shot.

When fired, a text message will show up as below

未命中(yellow text) no hit

命中:身体(red text) body hit, with a number of current distance

命中:爆头(red text with a skull icon) headshot, with a number of current distance

Only kar98k available currently.

I actually found it pretty useful, and it’s great to see the community working to help others. It might be a simple tool, but it’s definitely worth a go!

In other PUBG news, Xbox has said that sales for the console version are “very big,” netcode analysis shows that the game has a big problem, and the Battle Royale Trainer is here to help players improve.

Overwatch Mercy & Junkrat Nerfs Hit Live Servers, Xbox One X Gets 4K Support

A new Overwatch update has been deployed across all platforms, bringing big changes to two of the most controversial characters. Both Mercy and Junkrat have faced the wrath of Blizzard, experiencing nerfs that will really impact how rounds play out.

Find the full list of patch notes below:

PATCH HIGHLIGHTS

World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth Pre-purchase Goodies

When you pre-purchase a Digital Deluxe version of World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth you’ll receive several Warcraft-themed goodies in Overwatch. Show your faction pride on the battlefields of tomorrow with emotes for Tracer; Horde- and Alliance-themed voice lines for Torbjörn; Anduin, Jaina, Sylvanas, and Saurfang sprays; and Kul Tiras and Zandalar player icons.

GENERAL UPDATES

General

[XB1] Added 4K support for Xbox One X

HERO UPDATES

Junkrat

Concussion Mine

Now will deal less damage to targets farther away from the explosion’s center

Developer Comments: Junkrat has been enjoying the flexibility his double-charge Concussion Mine provides, but it has now become a bit too easy to throw out huge bursts of damage in a large area. With this change he can still dish out similar damage but he must now be more accurate with his tosses.

Mercy

Valkyrie

No longer makes Resurrect instant

No longer grants a bonus Resurrect charge

The speed bonus Guardian Angel receives when activating Valkyrie has been decreased by 50%

Duration reduced from 20 seconds to 15 seconds

Developer Comments: Mercy’s recent Resurrect changes have helped in allowing enemies to have more counter play in dealing with her, but she was able to use Resurrect through Valkyrie enough to largely mitigate the impact of the previous changes. Additionally, we’re toning back the amount of mobility Valkyrie provides through Guardian Angel and reducing its duration to overall reduce the power of this ability.

BUG FIXES

Heroes

Fixed a bug that caused D.Va’s face and hair textures to not load when her Black Cat skin was equipped

Are you still maining Mercy? If so, let us know how you’ve adapted to these changes!

In other Overwatch news, YouPorn is saying the game is hurting its traffic, new loot has been added to standard loot boxes, and the new hero is apparently going to be “meta changing.”

It’s clear that Bungie isn’t giving up on the game, despite the backlash from players. Here’s hoping the support continues, and we keep seeing more improvements and new things to do.

In other Destiny 2 news, several top Destiny YouTubers have lessened their support of the game, Bungie is hiring a new community manager, and the developer explains the faction rewards throttle and incoming adjustments. It also appears that the Destiny 2 Gods of Mars expansion has leaked (again)!

Latest Battlefield 1 Patch Notes Detail Big Weapon Balance Changes, Map Tweaks & More

In addition to the new content introduced with the second Battlefield 1 Turning Tides update, a huge number of weapon balance tweaks were made. These changes really shake things up when it comes to gunfights, and veteran players will want to study the patch notes carefully in order to adapt to the new meta.

Find the weapon balance changes, as well as other big tweaks, in the full list of patch notes below:

NEW MAP: HELIGOLAND BIGHT

This is Battlefield 1’s quintessential naval map. With its immense scale and focus on vehicular combat, it’s ideal for Conquest Assault, the only game mode available on this map.

This is the first naval battle of the Great War, where the British Royal Marines commenced a surprise attack against the German navy. Attackers speed to the red cliffs and rocky shores to gain ground, where infantry can use large rocks and dunes as cover from battleship shelling. Control Bunker Beach and you’ll have access to a battery cannon to defend against the onslaught. Take cover behind the rocky wave breaker wall to safely engage the enemy beyond the sinking cruiser, as they take a foothold on the nearby Düne island. Finally, assert your dominance in the first ever Battlefield 1 Dreadnought vs. Dreadnought battle.

NEW MAP: ZEEBRUGGE

Under the veil of night, British troops reinforce the treacherous raid on the Belgian port of Bruges-Zeebrugge. Join the concentrated battle as the British Royal Marines wrestle to possess the German controlled, concrete mole. Advance past the war-torn breach toward the heavily guarded submarine pen. Utilize the dock openings to gain access and overcome the enemy. Torpedo boats, planes, L-Class Destroyers, Dreadnoughts, and the menacing C-Class Airship battle for control around the port. Be mindful, as infantry soldiers fight back with the anti-aircraft guns placed along the coastal wall and battery cannons that are lining the nearby beach at the base of the mole.

NEW: VEHICLE

The all-new C-Class Airship is equipped with 4 seats and 2 package loadouts. Pilots can deliver an immense payload of artillery and bombs, as they navigate the skies. Front gunners are equipped with a 76mm cannon, while rear gunners provide support with a 20mm Autocannon. Top gunners offer anti-aircraft protection with a mounted AA gun on the top of the vessel. Like tanks and the new L-Class Destroyer, pilots can self-repair the C-Class Airship to maintain dominance in the sky.

NEW: UNIFORMS

Don the characteristic blue uniforms of the British Empire’s elite naval troops, the admirable Royal Marines.

NEW: IMPROVED WEAPON BALANCE

With the addition of new weapons from each expansion pack and the growing community of skilled players, we found it necessary to rebalance the weapons to increase the pacing of combat and balance the loadout options among and between the various classes in Battlefield 1.

These changes are far-reaching, across the breadth of Battlefield 1 weapons, which may be difficult to feel when trying them out for the first time. There are a lot of changes, which may not be noticeable immediately and may only become more apparent with time. Players should find a faster time-to-kill (TTK), be more capable in out-numbered scenarios, and find greater distinction between different weapons and weapon types.

The following summaries detail how these changes will alter the encounters at the ideal engagement ranges:

Assault vs Medic

Medic remains superior at any distance outside of very close range
The overall decrease in TTK at close range for Assault weapons should ensure their superiority at ideal engagement range

Support

The biggest difference here is that Support weapons will be slower to get on target at close range, pushing the engagement slightly more in favor of the Assault than it already was

At longer distances the Support LMGs remain far superior to the Assault SMGs and shotguns

Scout

These encounters remain mostly unchanged

These classes are opposite extremes; the winner of the engagement will usually come down to range

Medic vs Support

The main change here is in how the Medic approaches an LMG. Previously the SLRs were like LMGs in terms of raw TTK, meaning it was often possible to outshoot one head to head. With the changes this is more dangerous, as the LMG will be more likely to kill the Medic before he can reach cover to heal

LMG accuracy at close range is weaker than before however, plus Medic rifles have improved range, leaving the medic with several options of approach – take potshots at the Support from longer distances, or attack from unexpected angles to exploit the LMG weakness when not already in ADS or on a bipod

Scout

Medics are slightly more accurate at longer distances and are therefore an increased threat to Scouts than previously

Otherwise these encounters remain unchanged

Support vs Scout

Support is slightly more dangerous at long range than before. There is therefore increased pressure on the Scout to score a one hit kill from an unexpected location before the Support can return fire

Otherwise these encounters remain unchanged

With regards to weapon family specific changes, you will see an overall reduction in the number of bullets required to kill a target at a weapons ideal engagement range, along with some general improvements to their handling:

Shotguns

Shotguns remain the strongest close-range weapon with generally very poor ranged performance (except for the “Slug” variants)

They have suffered from inconsistency due to how shotgun pellets work, which we’ve improved by reducing how much randomness plays a part in the shotgun dispersion. All shotguns now fire 12 pellets. The dispersion is now broken down into 12 sectors, 6 in an inner circle and 6 in an outer ring. Each sector will contain 1 pellet. This ensures that all 12 pellets are more evenly spread over the dispersion cone, and prevents all the pellets from bunching up in one area, which could cause lucky one hit kills at longer distances, or inversely result in a complete miss.

Sub Machine Guns – SMGs

SMGs remain very strong close-range weapons, second only to Shotguns
High bullet damage drop-off and large spread make them ineffective at longer distances than all other weapons, with the exception of Shotguns
The variance in raw TTK of the SMGs has been reduced, reducing the benefit of that advantage on specific SMGs (such as the Hellriegel and Automatico) and increasing the options available to Assault players

Light Machine Guns – LMGs

LMGs offer the most firepower, but at the cost of handling and mobility
The strongest weapon at medium range when ready for a fight

If caught off guard however their poor hip-fire and high spread mechanics put them at a disadvantage

Self-Loading Rifles – SLRs

The most flexible weapon

Slightly weaker in terms of TTK than most other weapons but with advantages over all others in some area

Much better ranged performance than SMGs and shotguns

Better handling and can get on target accurately faster than LMGs

More effective at closer ranges than bolt actions

Bolt Actions

Bolt actions offer one hit kills at longer ranges

They have very low fire rates however which makes them very weak up close

These are the least changed weapon type

OTHER UPDATES

PLAYER PROGRESSION

Vehicle damage performed by K Bullets fired from the Martini-Henry sniper rifle are now properly tracked for the Overwatch Service Assignment.

Reduced the requirements of the Ribbon of Justice from 5 kills in a round to 2.

UI & HUD

The player outlines now comply with the colorblind settings.

Added custom colorblind color settings in the video options.

Players can customize the size and opacity of world icons in the gameplay options.

Hit indicators can be customized with different colors for critical hit kills.

Detailed mini-map/full map customization is now in the gameplay options.

Vehicle spawn logic has been changed to allow players to select the spawn point even if a vehicle is not available, which will allow players the opportunity to customize vehicles at the deploy screen more often.

WEAPONS, VEHICLES, & GADGETS

Numerous weapon balance tweaks. Here’s a short list of some noteworthy changes among many more:

Slightly tweaked the damage models for several Medic rifles:

NBA 2K18 Update Shoots Out, Might Not Be What You’re Expecting

Visual Concepts has released a new NBA 2K18 update just now (1.09), and it’s not full of tweaks and fixes, nope. It’s just for the NBA 2K League, which might be of a downer for some of us.

Clocking in at a hefty 5.7GB, the patch is for the NBA 2K League Combine. Those not familiar what the “Combine” is, here’s the official description (via Wikipedia):

The NBA Draft Combine is a multi-day showcase that takes place every May before the annual June NBA draft. At the combine, college basketball players receive measurements, participate in interviews, undergo shooting drills, take medical tests, go through five-on-five drills and perform various athletic tests in front of National Basketball Association (NBA) coaches, general managers, and scouts. Athletes attend by invitation only. An athlete’s performance during the combine can affect perception, draft status, salary, and ultimately the player’s career.

The athletic tests include a standing vertical jump, maximum vertical jump, bench press, three-quarter-court sprint time, lane agility time, and modified event time.[1][2] Physical measurements include height with shoes, height without shoes, wingspan, weight, standing reach, body fat, hand length, and hand width.[3] The shooting tests include spot-up three-point field goals from various distances (high school, college, and NBA) depending upon position, shooting off the dribble, and timed jump shots on the move.[4] Although the NBA Draft Combine is the largest pre-draft gathering for testing and drills, international players can attend a separate Eurocamp at a later date.[5] Parts of the combine are televised on ESPNU and ESPN2.[5]

It’s a big deal for rookies not in the top 10 in real life, though we can’t say for sure how it is in the game. Of course, it is annoying to have to download this mandatory patch even if you’re not interested in joining the NBA 2K League or any of its activities, but what can we do?

If we see official patch notes, or see any changes, we’ll update the post.

Respawn Star Wars Game Released Date Confirmed to Be in Anytime Between April 2019 to March 2020

In case you didn’t know, Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind the Titanfall, is hard at work on a still-untitled Star Wars game for EA.

While there’s no firm details known about it now, other than it’ll be a third-person action game, EA has given the game a release window! During its earnings call earlier today, EA announced that the Respawn Star Wars game release date will fall in fiscal year 2020, which is anywhere from April 2019, to March 2020.

Again, this doesn’t mean that the Star Wars game will be out by March 2020, but rather between April 2019 to March 2020. Regardless though, it’s definitely a long ways off. Who knows? Maybe it’l launch alongside the new consoles? Respawn can take its time now, seeing as it’s now owned by EA.

Do you think Respawn’s game will hit the PS5 and next-gen consoles? Or will this gen last until 2020? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Battlefield 2018 Release Date Confirmed for October, Anthem Officially Delayed to Early 2019

During EA’s earnings call today, the publisher confirmed that the as-of-yet-untitled Battlefield due for this year will be released in October 2018, which isn’t surprising given the game has maintained its release schedule for the past few years.

In the same call, EA confirmed that BioWare’s ambitious Anthem is indeed getting delayed to “early 2019,” which we’ve previously reported on too. However, the publisher states that the reason it’s delaying the game isn’t due to development being behind schedule, but rather, to give Anthem more attention if it came out in a “quieter quarter.”

Regarding Battlefield 2018, while there’s nothing concrete out there yet, there’s a lot of rumors floating around now, which we’ve compiled, and is a must-read if you’re a Battlefield fan.

Surprised at the Battlefield 2018 release date confirmation for October? I know I’m not. I’m not surprised at Anthem being pushed back, either, and I doubt anyone else is at this point.

Once EA releases more nuggets during its earnings call, we’ll post it up on the site so stay tuned.

Star Wars Battlefront II Sales at Over 9 Million Units, Microtransactions in “Next Few Months”

While there was a ton of gamer and media backlash regarding Star Wars Battlefront II and the game’s originally planned microtransactions, it seems the game wasn’t affected as much as some people expected.

According to EA’s latest earnings call, Star Wars Battlefront II sold over nine million units, which is lower than EA’s expected 10 million target. Additionally, and what might be more important to Battlefront II players, microtransactions will be re-implemented in the game in the next “few months.”

Sure, gamers are in full-on hate mode for EA, and even Battlefront II, but just as we reported last year, sales weren’t affected that much. It also shot up to the digital sales charts on PSN in December of 2017.

In other Star Wars Battlefront II news, DICE has already mentioned that they will be changing how progression works, which might be tied in to how microtransactions will be reintroduced down the line.

Surprised at the Battlefront II sales numbers? Or not at all given the hardcore gaming crowd is but a small fraction of consumers?

Gran Turismo 7 Already Being Worked on by Polyphony Digital

While Polyphony Digital is hard at work on supporting Gran Turismo Sport post-launch, the dev team isn’t stopping there, and it seems work on the next installment of the hit racing franchise has already begun!

Talking to Game Watch, Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi has mentioned that he’s already working on Gran Turismo 7 — or whatever Polyphony decides to officially name the next entry in the series.

I can not talk about anything yet, but since the moment releasing GT [Sport], I have started making the next GT.

Yamauchi wouldn’t say if the next entry will indeed be called Gran Turismo 7, though he did mention how bikes could possibly be part of the franchise’s future.

I always hear about the sequel of TT, so I do not know whether it will appear as a sequel to TT or whether a motorcycle will appear in GT, but always there is a corner in the head.

Translation was done via Google Translate, so it’s a bit wonky. I gather, Yamauchi is referring to how motorcycles are in the corner of his head (or in his mind, so to speak).

Finally, Yamauchi confirmed that GT Sport will have an update that will add time trials in VR mode, and future updates will add new cars “as well as past cars.”

Given how warmly GT Sport has been accepted, what do you want to see in the next Gran Turismo game? Do you even think it’ll be released on the PS4, or is it a lock for the PS5 given Polyphony’s notoriously long development time in making games?
