System Shock Review – Frustrating Space Escapades

As far as classics go, System Shock is an accomplished albeit niche choice. An enjoyable mix of shooter and RPG mix like there were few in the ’90s, it was a skilled game with a steep learning curve and a baddie that kept on thwarting your plans. Nightdive Studios brings a long due remake that tries to capture the magic of the original, but the troubled development and some outdated design decisions make it a game that isn’t quite sure if it should remain in the past or exist accordingly to expectations of modern times. As such, it’s a flawed and often frustrating experience that has some nostalgic value, but surely not a classic of our days.

Rise of the AI

After a successful Kickstarter, development on System Shock was less than smooth, even including a period where it was put on hold. With a few more delays added into the mix, the game is finally out there, to the delight of longtime fans who can’t wait to again get fooled by an AI with a god complex and annihilation intent.

As it turns out with remakes, expectations and reality often clash in not so agreeable ways. The revolutionary technical aspect of the original release isn’t a factor anymore, and past limitations must be taken into consideration when creating a game for current times. System Shock tries to find a middle ground that pleases everyone, but ultimately fails to deliver a consistent update that is beyond reproach.

The beginning of the adventure is brooding, as a drone flies through a futuristic metropolis and zooms in the apartment where you stand, revealing your failed hacking efforts as you are caught red-handed and transferred to a space station. Forced into a deal with a shady corporation that will trigger the catastrophic events, SHODAN goes rogue and turns the crew into an army of mutants, with her next target being Earth itself.

System Shock Review

A first-person looter shooter at heart sprinkled with some survival mechanics, System Shock throws you into a scenario where you are initially unaware of the scope of the circumstances. Your best bet is to explore each level of the space station and try to make sense of everything via audio logs, as you search the labyrinthine areas with no real goal in mind. This is a game without a clear mission structure and frustratingly so, as the hands-free approach isn’t the kind that makes for an enjoyable time – instead, you will often feel lost, confused, overwhelmed by the repeated search for a lever or an access card that doesn’t want to show up, no matter how many laps you make through the level.

The visual design doesn’t help either; it’s very hard to spot items you can interact with among the machinery and high-tech panels that make the buttons scale into the thousands per level, but obviously only a bunch of these are slightly different and functional. Spotting them is the hard part, as beyond the initial hints directing you at vital triggers, you are left alone in the dark, clutching at walls in the hope of finding a crucial one.

Loot is a major part of your adventures, but its significance is reduced. You can grab a diversity of items that serve no other purpose but to be vaporized first, then turned into credits later when you find the required station. This ends up being a chore, with an endless succession of picking up and discarding items, frequently checking for available inventory space, and resisting the temptation of grabbing another platter or mug. Finding the useful items among all the rubbish isn’t a great time to have.

Shock to the System

System Shock Review

Although there are some other issues to mention, not everything is bad about the System Shock remake. The feeling of claustrophobia is palpable, and exploring new levels for the first time is a good sensation, peeking at every corner to make sure that no cyborg or machine is waiting for you, discovering a new energy weapon or a shotgun to take out the corrupted crew and defenses. The map is useful but not quite the ultimate guide, as some paths aren’t exactly easy to interpret unless you are right there on the spot.

Jacking into a device and entering cyberspace is the other half of System Shock. Now free from the shackles known as limbs, we travel around these areas shooting and collecting items in pure Descent fashion, in what is a timeless vision of hacking a system.

The occasional puzzles will force you to take a break from the exploration and fighting, as you rearrange some plugs and connections to unlock doors. Nothing is truly explained to you, forcing some brainstorming as you figure out what is at the core of the puzzles.

Combat is a big part of this space station discovery, starting with a lead pipe that isn’t quite at the level of Gordon Freeman’s quasi-charismatic crowbar. The feeling of impact is tame, there’s not a great deal of feedback from your hits. Unfortunately, the same can be said about energy weapons and the shotgun, for example, lacking the punch that such arsenal should convey, resulting in middling gunplay.

System Shock Review Cyberspace

A rebellious and ruthless AI she may be, but SHODAN didn’t quite endow her hordes with the gift of intelligence. Enemies are ironically lacking in artificial intelligence, most of them simply moving towards you and trying to find a path for a clean hit, often failing miserably. You may even spot some odd behaviors, such as when a couple of cyborgs were attacking me; one of them threw a proximity mine a few steps ahead, something that sounded like a nice plan in case I wanted to get up close and personal. However, I hid and one of them decided to move forward, triggering said device and blowing both to pieces. Witnessing this, Earth may not be at much risk, after all.

System Shock also comes with some notorious bugs and poor quality of life choices that are hard to ignore. The most visible one is having dead enemies jiggling and twitching on the floor like it’s disco time, and often reloading a save results in seeing nearby corpses falling from the ceiling, an odd sight that is hard to get accustomed to. The inability to skip the game over and rebuild cutscenes is another head-scratching moment, as the ten or so seconds that it takes for you to regain control are excruciating.

Then there was one situation where I couldn’t use a medical station anymore because I was allegedly threatened – something that makes sense when there are enemies nearby, but that was not the case. Due to this unfortunate state, I couldn’t heal, jump into cyberspace, or save the game, so I was left to my own fortunes until I was finally killed and consequently freed from this invisible threat and its restrictions.

Garish Colors and Pixel Corridors

System Shock Review

The art style chosen for this System Shock remake is bound to be divisive. Granted, there wasn’t much to take inspiration from the original, as imagination often played a large role in games of old. The idea of a derelict space station remains, but the choice of going for a modern look mixed with some pixel sensibilities and rounded up by highly saturated colors won’t be to everyone’s taste.

In some regards, it does look outdated; as if the pixels that you spot when you look closely are not a design preference, but signs of a game from an older era. It’s not artsy enough to be fancy, and it’s not stylized enough to be intentionally retro and cohesive – it just sits awkwardly in the middle, sufficient, but no more than that.

The original System Shock was a classic but also a niche game that never achieved commercial success; this remake highlights the niche aspect but will forgo the classic label. It may entice players who want to see how this updated version looks and plays, and while there’s some considerable tension to be had while going down narrow and dim lit corridors, the fun of being lost in maze after maze wears out quickly, especially when you’re doing the umpteenth scan through the map looking for whatever card or switch you have missed. At this rate, SHODAN is likely going to conquer both Citadel Station and Earth, as frustrating her plans is precisely that – frustrating.

Score: 6/10

Pros:

  • Some claustrophobic corridors that may give you an unnerving feeling
  • The occasional interesting puzzle

Cons:

  • Absolutely frustrating when you can’t find what to do next
  • SHODAN should do something about that enemy AI
  • Visual style is an odd and uneven mix of past and present
  • A few noticeable bugs

GTA 6 Needs to Be Something Players Have “Never Seen Before,” Rockstar Seeking “Perfection,” Claims Take-Two CEO

While Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto franchise still continues to sell like hotcakes, the developers are in an unenviable position where they need to raise the bar in every series entry, which is the case for in-development GTA 6.

Case in point: Take-Two Interactive’s (parent company of Rockstar) CEO Strauss Zelnick mentioned that GTA 6 needs to be something players haven’t seen before, but also something that should feel familiar to GTA players.

This was shared by Zelnick in “The Aarthi & Siriam Show” videocast where the exec also said that Rockstar’s answer to it all is to just seek “perfection.”

It (GTA 6) needs to be something you’ve never seen before on the one hand and it needs to reflect the feeling that we have about Grand Theft Auto and that’s a big challenge for the team.

Now Rockstar’s answer is just seek perfection. Seek nothing short of perfection and we’ll get there.

For now, we’re left in the dark as to where Rockstar is with GTA 6’s development, as we haven’t seen nor heard of Grand Theft Auto 6 since the massive leak that happened last year — something Take-Two said didn’t affect the game’s development.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Will Feature Three Skill Trees, With One Being Shared Between the Web Swingers

If you’re wondering how Insomniac Games is planning to tackle the two Spider-Mans (Spider-Men) in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 when it comes to their different skills, then wonder no more, as the studio revealed that both would feature their own skill trees in, with a third being shared between them.

This slice of information was revealed on the PlayStation Blog, where Insomniac’s senior community manager, Aaron Jason Espinoza confirmed that each character would have their own skill tree in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Between Peter’s new Symbiote abilities and Miles’ newfound blue bioelectric powers, each Spider-Man has their own unique set of skills that can be upgraded via all-new individual skills tree. Our heroes share technology and train together, too, so we also included a shared Skill Tree that offers parallel upgrades for both.

For those that played both Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, this is a bit of a no-brainer. While both Spider-Mans do share a number of abilities, they also have several ones that are unique to each Spidey. Miles Morales, for example, can use bio-electricity, as well as camouflage, whereas Peter Parker’s Spider-Man has access to a range of gadgets, not to mention the Venom suit that he’ll be dawning during the sequel that’ll be loaded with new abilities.

What is more of the “bigger” news is that there will be a shared skill tree in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 between both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. These will most likely be related to all the gameplay mechanics they share, such as swinging, jumping, etc., which would make sense to share, as it would save players time, rather than have them re-unlocking the same skills for the different characters.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is currently targeting a Fall 2023 release exclusively for the PS5. If you haven’t already, or somehow manage to miss it, be sure to check out Marvel’s Spider-man 2 debut gameplay now.

Report: Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 3 Will See Optimus Prime, Loading Screen and More Leak Out

Fortnite is about to get yet another major crossover if this recent leak is to be believed, as Optimus Prime gearing up for his Battle Royale debut in Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 3.

New images were shared featuring Optimus Prime, as well as a few new character skins, are set to debut during the next season of Chapter 4 in Fortnite.

Nothing else is known at this time about the character, though we assume he’ll be resized, so don’t expect to be playing as a massive giant. Whether not he’ll be able to transform into a truck is also up in the air, though it would be disappointing if he didn’t.

Note that same with any datamined info and leaks, treat it with a grain of salt until officially announced by Epic Games. That said, Fortnite content being leaked is par for the course for the game, so don’t be surprised to see this as the real deal.

Luckily we won’t have long to wait, as Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 3 is set to debut next month. So expect to see some official confirmation of this collab in the coming weeks. Once the patch is out for Chapter 4 Season 3, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Thanks, Ambushments!

Final Fantasy 16 PS4 Version Originally Planned by Square Enix, Scrapped Since It Added Extra Years of Development

As we all know by now, Final Fantasy 16 is a PS5 exclusive. However, it seems that this wasn’t always the case, as, at some point in development, the team was thinking of releasing a Final Fantasy 16 PS4 version.

This was revealed by the game’s producer, Naoki Yoshida, during a recent interview with Final Fantasy Union.

Final Fantasy Union: You’ve spoken a lot about the relationship you have with Sony, and how they’ve provided not just development support, but also support
in other areas, such as marketing. But I’m curious, when did Sony get involved? Was it when the game was still in development for the PlayStation 4, or did it happen when development started shifting to the PS5?

Yoshida: I mean, that’s something that’s kind of between us and Sony, and it’s kind of really difficult to talk about here. What I can say is that while developing, we originally had a plan to possibly release the game on the PlayStation 4. During development, we realized that to get it to a level that we were gonna be proud of, we needed at least one or two more years of development to do that.

And so I had to make a decision at that time. It’s like, okay, we don’t want to extend it that long. Let’s go PS5 only.

Do note that he doesn’t specify when during development this decision was made, but it’s likely to have happened very early on. He also said they originally had a plan to release on the PS4 “POSSIBLY.” So it doesn’t sound like they canceled a last-gen version that was already in development but rather scrapped the initial plans that would have started its development.

We do have to agree here with the team, as adding extra years would only drive up costs and spread the team even more thin. That, and it does seem that Final Fantasy 16 is using the full power of the PS5 if recent trailers and gameplay are anything to go by.

Final Fantasy 16 releases on June 22 on the PS5.

Activision Is Selling a Modern Warfare 2 Calling Card That Appears to Be a Resized Loading Screen

For those who purchase in-game cosmetic bundles in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, it’s common practice for these said bundles to house different items in each, with most housing new operator skins, Calling Cards, weapon skins and the like.

Interestingly enough, some might not know that in Season 2, Activision introduced bundles for sale in the game with one of the items being a unique loading screen. While the idea of selling loading screens sound ridiculous enough as it is, it seems Activision took it one step further by having one of the bundles being sold for real-world money include a Calling Card that’s a resized loading screen.

You can check out it in the image below where both the loading screen and the re-sized Calling Card can be seen side-by-side:

Note that this Calling Card can also be obtained by completing an in-game challenge too.

Granted, in most of these bundles the main draw are the new weapon and operator skins, but resizing something and then including it as part of a bundle that’s being sold for real-world money is not something a lot of people would be a fan of. But then again, Activision did introduce MW2 and Warzone 2 skins for sale that were ripped from Modern Warfare 2019, so I guess this shouldn’t be all that surprising.

In case you didn’t know, Activision also started selling gun sounds in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 when Season 3 kicked off. Not only that, but players also got introduced to bundles that were literally pay-to-win.

Thanks, COD Warfare Forum

Guilty Gear Strive Interview – Arc System Works Talks Season 3, Dead Characters & More

While Arc System Works has developed notable games such as Dragon Ball FighterZ, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and more, the studio’s bread and butter has always been the Guilty Gear franchise. During this year’s Arc World Tour Finals, MP1st had the chance to interview the studio about Guilty Gear Strive.

Taking part in the interview is Junior Ferreira (Esports Manager at Arc System Works), and Ken Miyauchi (Producer for Guilty Gear -Strive-). We asked about Season 3, dead characters returning to the roster, and more.

MP1st: Tell us about the idea behind the player intros. Is this something you think will stick around for future events?

Junior Ferreira: The player intros were one of my favorite aspects of the Arc World Tour Finals! When I originally conceptualized the idea, I knew that I wanted to make these players live out their best anime protagonist dreams and with the amazing talent that our production team brought to the table, we were able to make those dreams a reality. There was definitely a lot of back and forth regarding the look and feel of the intros, but it was ultimately decided that we wanted to at the very least have our players cosplay in their winning character. This was something that I felt was really important to bring to the table because of the dedication that the players put into practicing with those characters; which ultimately led to them winning and being invited to the finals. The overall reception around the player intros was immense and I feel like that in and of itself cements the need for us to continue to do this in future events. My goal was to make these players feel like stars, and I feel like we were able to deliver on that goal so I’m excited to see what we can do here for Arc World Tour 2023!

Guilty Gear Strive Season 2 Survey

MP1st: Season 3 is a much-welcomed surprise, though with the news of development just starting (?) we suppose we won’t hear much about it for a while. What is the likelihood we see or hear anything about it later this year?

Ken Miyauchi: I also want to talk a lot about our Season 3 plan, but I can only say that we are planning to make Season 3 to have more surprising contents than Season 2.

MP1st: Does the team have a good idea of who they want to include next season? What kind of decision process goes into that? Is it all studio-driven, community requests, or a mix of both?

Ken Miyauchi: It is a mix of both. We also think about the balance of the character types in a season. For example, we don’t want all the characters in a season to be zoner or technical characters.

MP1st: Bedman? was a nice surprise that no one expected. To clear the air, are we actually playing as a bed?

Ken Miyauchi: Yes, you are actually playing as a bed. The girl is Delilah, Bedman’s sister. Bedman is gone in the previous Guilty Gear Xrd story. Uncertainty but the bed seems like it has Bedman’s spirit or some sort. That is why it is called “Bedman?”

MP1st: What can you tell us about this iteration of Bedman when it comes to playstyle? Should fans expect him? To play similarly as he did in past games, or will there be some added twists with Delilah being added to the mix?

Ken Miyauchi: His play will be different compared to Bedman in Xrd, but still has similar unique air mobility. I think if you know the past Bedman, you will find some similarity to Bedman?’s move. That is another reason why we made a small change to the character name to express this is a different character.  Delilah does not directly interact in a battle but she follows around Bedman? and has unique animations when she is close to Bedman? which actually had many technical efforts to make it visually work.

MP1st: We suppose the community is no stranger to seeing “dead” characters revived in some capacity. Bedman probably won’t be the last?

Ken Miyauchi: Currently, all the characters are following the storyline, that is why the bed looks visually broken and it is dragging its arm since it broke during the Another Story from the Season Pass 1 additional content. If there are any “dead” character returnings, then we will probably prepare a convincing story to fit into the Strive timeline.

guilty gear strive season 2 survey

MP1st: How important was community feedback and input during the development of Guilty Gear Strive, and in what ways did it influence the final product?

Ken Miyauchi: It is very important for us to hear the community feedback and we really appreciate how the community is reaching out to us. The beta feedback especially helped the entire development team to understand the importance of the rollback netcode. I cannot tell much detail but we have a long list of update ideas to reflect the community feedback into the game. We are currently working on a big one or ones that are urgent first. We also really appreciate positive feedback from the community. Our team is very motivated by them and we would like to continue seeing the positive feedback through the updates.

MP1st: With Strive’s final Season 2 character dropping in May. Looking back at the roster of characters, and all its DLC, including Bedman? and the unannounced one, who would you say is your favorite character to play, and why?

Ken Miyauchi: I personally like a character who has strong okizeme or open up options. I actually was a player who likes to spend a lot of time in training mode and practicing hard execution cool combos that are not viable in real matches. Somewhat related to this background, my favorite characters to play at the moment are Leo and Bridget. Recently, I am also interested in Bedman? because I like the visual and animation of this character. I cannot explain the reason here yet but I am also looking very into the next unannounced one.

MP1st: Speaking of the unannounced character. We don’t expect you to confirm who it is (we have our suspicions), BUT are there any additional hints/teases you could provide? Is the community looking in the right direction?

Ken Miyauchi: I also want to talk about this character but please wait for the next announcement. We are looking forward to how everyone reacts when it is announced.

MP1st: Can you share any interesting or unexpected challenges that the development team faced while creating Guilty Gear Strive, DNF Duel, and/or all supporting content? (*Also listed in below section for DNF Duel and others portion)

Ken Miyauchi: Everything about creating Guilty Gear -Strive- are unexpected challenges, and it is still continuing.

You can check out our review of Guilty Gear Strive right here. Once more info regarding Season 3 is know, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection Fan Project Currently in Testing

The Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection is currently in testing, according to recent activity logged onto SteamDB. The SteamDB page shows activity from just a few days ago, with the adding and removing of depots of up to 20GB in size.

For those unfamiliar with the project, the Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection is a fan-made project that aims to add touch-ups and extra details to the original Half Life 2 game. According to a video by Tyler McVicker, who covered the project back in 2021, Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection will port the game to the CS:GO version of the Source Engine. The remaster is spearheaded by Filip Victor, who was given permission by Valve to work on the project.

The specific activity seen on Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection’s SteamDB store page is the adding and removing of depots. Depots are essentially groupings of files, so it’s possible that Victor (and possibly other developers working on the project) are giving some version of the game a test run.

This does not mean, of course, that the Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection will be available anytime soon, but it does at least show that the project is still being worked on. At this point, it’s anyone’s guess as to when the Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection releases.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake: Embracer CEO Has “No Further Comments” on Progress

Fans anticipating the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake (KOTOR remake) may have to wait a little longer before they get to try out the upcoming title, as Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors refused to comment on the game’s development progress in a recent Q&A.

The question was asked during the video game holding company’s quarterly earnings presentation, where Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was among the games listed under “announced games” in the report. Here’s the full exchange between an investor and Wingefors, as shared by journalist Stephen Totilo:

Investor question: Could you please clarify the current status of the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic remake in regards to its development status and what shape is it in.

Embracer CEO Wingefors: Favorite question. [pauses as questioner chuckles] I have no further comments.

A couple of years ago, the remake for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was announced, and since then it’s reportedly been delayed indefinitely, with the game handed over to Saber Interactive after dismay over former progress with Aspyr.

With the CEO being this tight-lipped, things aren’t looking too good for those hoping to play the remake, especially if the reports are to be believed.

Former DICE Dev States Battlefield 2042 “Never Stood Much a Chance at Being Great” at Launch

While Battlefield 2042 might be in a good state right now, it wasn’t always the case. Back when it launched in October 6, 2021, the game was chastised for its bug-filled experience, lack of content, and the way specialists deviated a bit too much from what Battlefield stood for.

Over on Twitter, former DICE Senior Software Engineer (and now Epic Games Senior Backend Engineer) Joakim Bodin commented that the game “never stood much of a chance” at being great at launch.

This game had many iterations, and the deadline never changed much, so never stood much chance being great at launch.

I’m proud though to have pushed hard to have this game have full cross play, progression and (mostly) commerce. It’s online systems will serve future titles well

Interesting to hear this from someone who worked on the game.

As for what’s new to the game, DICE has revealed the full slate of new stuff coming in Battlefield 2042 Season 5 when it launches this June 7.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Developer Daedalic Is Making Another LOTR Game

Daedalic Entertainment, the developer of “The Lord of the Rings: Gollum,” is apparently working on another game based on the LOTR universe, codenamed “It’s Magic,” with the game scheduled for a late 2024 release. This comes after a rough launch of the LOTR: Gollum, with middling to negative reviews from various outlets and players.

The information comes from news website Games Wirtschaft, with a reported total funding of over 2 million euros from the Ministry of Economics. Interestingly, the grant was provided for the upcoming game only, not for LOTR: Gollum. The subsidy program, which provides grants to developers looking to create video games, only launched after the game’s development.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, despite being based on one of the most popular fantasy stories in literature, didn’t exactly launch to critical acclaim, with the developers themselves citing the “underwhelming experience” that the game currently provides (you can read our review of the game here). This, of course, raises the question as to whether or not Daedalic Entertainment can release a game that’s better than LOTR: Gollum.

While the upcoming LOTR-themed game is planned for a release during the second half of 2024, it’s worth mentioning that LOTR: Gollum has been delayed multiple times, so things aren’t looking too good for the “It’s Magic” project.

Diablo 4 First 1,000 Players to Reach Level 100 in Hardcore Wil Have Their Usernames Cast in Stone

For those who think they’re damn hardcore in Diablo 4, Blizzard has a challenge for you. The studio announced that the first 1,000 players to reach level 100 in Hardcore Mode will have their usernames etched in a real-life statue of Lilith!

Here’s how to enter:

  • The first 1,000 players skilled enough to show they’ve reached level 100 on hardcore mode with #Diablo4Hardcore will have the chance to have their username immortalized into a statue of Lilith.
  • Submit proof of victory with a screenshot via Twitter, your BattleNet ID, and the hashtag #Diablo4Hardcore.
  • Begin the challenge early on June 1st. Submissions close on June 4.

Players will need to tag the official Diablo Twitter account to be eligible. You can read the official rules for it here.

Mind, this is easier said than done, as Hardcore Mode in Diablo is perma-death! Once you bite the dust, you cannot respawn, which means your character and all the loot you amassed will go up in smoke.

In other Diablo 4 news, the review embargo for the game has been revealed! Tune in on May 30 for our review of the full game and our verdict.

Diablo 4 launches this June 6 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Those who bought the Ultimate Edition will be able to play on June 1.

The Lord of the Ring: Gollum Devs Apologize for “Underwhelming Experience,” Patches for Fixes Incoming

In case you didn’t know, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was just released a few days ago, and it was not a game we’d recommend to anyone. Unfortunately for developer Daedalic Entertainment, this is the same sentiment shared by most people who played it, and the studio is aware of the game’s shortcomings and have sent out an apology.

Over on the game’s official Twitter, Daedalic announced that they sorry for the game’s “underwhelming experience” and promised that fixes are incoming.

Dear players,

We would like to sincerely apologize for the underwhelming experience many of you have had with The Lord of Ring: GollumTM upon its release. We acknowledge and deeply regret that the game did not meet the expectations we set for ourselves or for our dedicated community. Please accept our sincere apologies for any disappointment this may have caused.

Our goal as a studio, and as passionate The Lord of the Rings fans, has always been to tell a compelling and immersive story-driven adventure. Crafting a story with Middle-earth as our playground has been the greatest honor – and the biggest challenge we have faced so far.

At Daedalic, we understand that a game’s success relies on the enjoyment and satisfaction of its players. We genuinely value your feedback and have been actively listening to your voices, reading your comments, and analyzing the constructive criticism and suggestions you have provided.

Our development team has been working diligently to address the bugs and technical issues many of you experienced. We are committed to providing you with patches that will allow you to enjoy the game to its fullest potential.

Once again, we deeply apologize for any inconvenience caused, and we appreciate your understanding during this time. We will continue to keep you updated on our progress and provide transparent communication regarding the upcoming patches and improvements. Your passion and dedication as players have been the driving force behind our determination to make things right.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
DAEDALIC
ENTERTAINMENT

Once one of these patches are released, we’ll be sure to let our readers know. Being honest, even if we get a dozen patches, the game’s problems are its core gameplay mechanics, and it would take a small miracle to change the game that much via patches, but we’re hoping Daedalic can do it in some way.

If you haven’t checked the game out, go read our review here where we state, “it’s more of a game going through the motions without ever finding its footing in the process. It has some cool ideas and attempts to execute them, but they never once felt realized throughout the journey.”

Report: The Last of Us Multiplayer Game Team Scaled Down as Naughty Dog “Reassesses Its Quality”

With the recent news from Naughty Dog that The Last of Us multiplayer game would need “more time” in development, sources have revealed that the studio has scaled down the team working on the project as the developers “reassess its quality.”

According to a report from Bloomberg, only a small group of developers remains to work on the project while the company decides on what to do with the game. It’s worth mentioning that this doesn’t necessarily imply that the game has been canceled, but it does mean that there will be fewer hands working on the multiplayer title, as many of the former staff have been relocated to other projects. Only after Bloomberg reached out to Naughty Dog to comment on the matter did the studio release a public statement on the multiplayer project.

The Last of Us multiplayer title had been in the works for at least four years, with Naughty Dog sharing concept art of the game earlier this year. Since then, it’s been a busy year for the franchise; the highly successful TV series, which premiered mid-January, has been renewed for a second season, and a PC port of The Last of Us Part 1 was also released, albeit with some major performance issues despite the port receiving a nearly month-long delay.

With what little information we have on the multiplayer title, we likely won’t be hearing from Naughty Dog on the project for a while, or at least until the studio figures out what to do with it.
